A MelanieM Review: Back Door Into Purgatory (Soul Shares # 9) by Rory Ni Coileain

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

In the final installment in the M/M Celtic SoulShares series, author Rory NiCoileain weaves together the myriad threads of this compelling paranormal romance in a climax that crosses time and space.

Sometimes Fae love stories aren’t what you expect.

The Marfach—devourer of magick, long-imprisoned mortal enemy of the Fae race—is free of its Antarctic prison.

The Demesne of Purgatory—Fae, humans, a Fade-hound puppy, a Gille Dubh, and a darag—is all that stands between the monster and the power it needs to destroy both the Fae Realm and the human world.

The only clue they have as to how to kill the unkillable is a cryptic note from the Loremasters:

“Osclór, Nartú; Tobar, Soladán; Nidantór, Breathea; Glanadorh, Coromór, Farthor; Scian-omprór, Nachangalte; Crangaol, Síofra; Gastiór, Laoc, Caomhnór; Fánadh, Ngarradh.”

Opener, Strength; Wellspring, Channel; Unmaker, Judge; Cleanser, Equalizer, Sentry; Blade-bearer, Unbound; Tree-kin, Changeling; Binder, Warrior, Guardian; Wanderer, Sundered.

As they rebuild Purgatory from the rubble the Marfach left behind, they have to stand together, using everything they know—everything they are to their partners, lovers, husbands. Everything SoulSharing has made them.

And not everyone who enters the final battle will leave it.

I have been reading and addicted to this series for eight, no, now nine books, and this, Back Door Into Purgatory (Soul Shares # 9) by Rory Ni Coileain,,  presumably last novel, is the masterstroke, the showcase as to why I have become such a devoted fan of this author and series.

I was absolutely bawling my eyes out halfway through this story. Heartbroken.

And I was prepared I thought for the worst because this has been a grand saga!  Of souls reunited over immense odds, of a undying monster so vile that its acts actually had me shuddering on numerous occasions throughout this series, of terrifying journeys to find and keep one’s soul share, and even stories of self revelation intertwined with deep impactful love.  Plus the saving of two worlds and magic.  Tons of magic and sex.

All done through some of the most memorable and fantastical of characters, and a place called Purgatory that goes through several transitions but always acts as a focus for all our characters and the drama needed to see the story move forward.

There is little I can say here about the arc because of its complexity and the author’s amazing ability to bring the Fae and Gaelic language fully to life.  There is a dictionary at the end thats lovely to refer to but fans of this series have grown use to many of the terms used within the series here.    The language has been a vital part of the characters and a necessary element to the world building.  I can’t imagine Soul Shares without it.

All the books should be read in the order they were written to understand the universe, the timeline, and the couples and characters part in the flow of the series and story overall.  This is an outstanding series, not to be missed.  The worldbuilding is complex and so imaginative, the characters beautifully written and flawlessly constructed, and oh, that ending.  Yes, I was sobbing again.

It’s made me start to go back to the beginning to read it from the top and flow through it now to what I imagine is the finish.  Those new to the series are now lucky enough they can do the same.  I highly recommend you read them all in order…now.  Make it a holiday gift to yourself.

Cover Art really works for the story and character.  Great job and very dramatic!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Rory Ni Coileain, author of BLOWING SMOKE, book five in my favorite Soul Shares series.

Hi, Rory, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

10 things we didn’t know about you.

    • I skipped first grade after about a month, when it became obvious that I knew everything they were planning on teaching us that year and they couldn’t figure out what else to do with me.
    • You never forget your first Doctor. Mine was #4.
    • I’m a Cancer, a Water Tiger in Chinese astrology, and utterly water-phobic.
    • I’m the evil twin.
    • I have three tattoos. As of yesterday.
    • I have two toenails on each pinky toe.
    • I used to do cross-stitch and Irish crocheted lace, until I acquired a cat who insisted on helping.
    • I came within .01 percent (yes, that’s a hundredth of a percent) in my GPA of being the youngest summa cum laude graduate in the history of my university. The fly in the ointment? My grades in Creative Writing…
    • I’m almost ambidextrous. (If I try to brush my teeth left-handed, I hold the brush still and turn my head from side to side really fast.)
    • I’m the oldest daughter of an oldest daughter of an oldest daughter, for seven generations all the way back to Ireland.
  • Thanks, Rory, for stopping by.  I look forward to more of your amazing Soul Shares characters and universe!

STRW Author BookSynopsis

Lasair Faol, Master of the Fade-Hounds to the Royal court of the Demesne of Fire in the Fae Realm, has been exiled to the human world by the Princess Consort for failing to catch her son’s kidnapper. Bryce Newhouse, Greenwich Village investment banker, is universally loathed by all who know him. Generally, he’s perfectly cool with that, but he discovers what he’s been missing—literally—when he finds Lasair chained in his basement.

Bryce was supposed to receive half of Lasair’s soul at his birth, but thanks to the Fae of Purgatory, the Pattern—portal between the worlds—has been damaged, and Bryce’s soul arrived thirty-one years too late. Now the exiled Fae is the shunned human’s only hope of healing his broken past. And with the fate of two worlds riding on that healing, Lasair is going to have to overcome both his race’s innate mistrust of genuine emotion and his own very unFae awkwardness, to have any chance of reaching Bryce’s impenetrable heart.

Bryce straightened, stepping out of his trousers and nudging them aside with a foot. He blushed faintly, smiling a little, when he saw how intensely Lasair was watching him.

“I want more of that smile,” Lasair murmured, letting his leggings fall and drawing Bryce close.

“You’re looking at my smile?”   To continue reading..:

STRW Author Bio and Contacts

Rory Ni Coileain has been writing almost as long as she’s been reading, and reading almost as long as she’s been talking. She majored in creative writing in college, back when Respectable Colleges didn’t offer such a major, so she designed it herself—being careful to ensure that she never had to take a class before nine in the morning or take a Hemingway survey course.

She graduated Phi Beta Kappa at the age of nineteen, sent off her first short story to an anthology being assembled by an author she idolized, received the kind of rejection letter that fuels decades of therapy, and found other things to do for the next thirty years or so, including nightclub singing, working as a volunteer lawyer for Gay Men’s Health Crisis, and studying ballet in New York City, until her stories grabbed her by the shirt collar and announced they were back.

Now she’s a legal editor, a soprano in her church choir and the St. Mark’s Cathedral Choral Society (unless they’re singing Mozart, because she’s decided that Mozart didn’t like sopranos very much), the mother of a teenaged son, Brony, and budding film-maker (all wrapped up in one amazing offspring), and amanuensis to a host of Fae, Gille Dubh, and shapeshifters who are all anxious to tell their stories, and some of whom aren’t very good at waiting their turns.

Hard as Stone Final

Hard As Stone: Tiernan Guaire is a Fae in exile. Forced from the Realm into the human world for the unimaginable crime of a brother’s murder, he lives by a century-old vow, to trust no one, and never to allow himself to love or be loved.
Kevin Almstead has just lost his future, to a vote of the partners at his law firm. Trying to escape for an evening, he ventures into Purgatory, the hottest all-male nightclub in Washington, D.C., where he allows himself to be seduced by a stranger with long blond hair and ice-blue eyes.
Drawn into a Soulshare bond with his intended one-night stand, Tiernan soon learns that the most ancient and evil enemy of the Fae still walks the human world, and it will stop at nothing – certainly not Kevin Almstead – to possess the magick of a Noble Fae.

 Hard As Stone Excerpt:

Tiernan stirred, muttered under his breath, the first signs of distress he’d shown since falling asleep. Passing out. Whatever. Kevin sighed, resting a hand lightly on the blond’s smooth chest; in short order, he found himself running his fingertips lightly over his lover’s chest, tracing the lines of the muscles, and then down, a fingertip traveling along the intricate tattoo over his hip. Tiernan wasn’t buff, not like some men were and Kevin himself tried to be. Lean, hard-bodied, almost impossibly fit. And with that long, unruly blond hair, and his crystalline blue eyes, Tiernan would turn heads in rooms full of men or women. And no doubt had.

The Fae rolled onto his side, away from Kevin; chuckling softly, Kevin settled himself behind his lover, glancing over the shoulder in front of him at the bedside clock. He could still get almost three hours of sleep if he was lucky. He wrapped an arm around Tiernan, nuzzled into the curve where neck met shoulder, breathed in the scent of wild hair and sated male body and honey, and closed his eyes. So this is what magic smells like.

Gale Force:

Gale Force Cover FinalBlurb:
Conall Dary is the most powerful mage born to the Fae race since the Realm was parted from the human world, over two thousand years ago. But that very power condemns him to a lifetime of celibacy, because sex calls to power, and he has power enough to drain a world. When he refuses to use his talents for a Noble lady’s petty revenge, he finds himself shanghaied to the human world, his soul torn in half and his magick blocked.

Josh LaFontaine is the beautifully inked owner of Raging Art-On, a Washington, D.C. tattoo and piercing parlor. While taking part in New York City’s Pride march with a former lover’s dance company, his world changes forever when the man of his dreams materializes out of nowhere at his feet. Josh’s sensual and loving touch, the first Conall has ever known, may be enough to give him back the magick he’s lost. But before they can complete their Soulshare, a terrible accident leaves Conall bodiless, lost, and invisible, to everyone except – maybe – the human with whom he shares a soul. But Josh will need to find him before the ancient evil of the Marfach does or everything they have – and more – will be lost.

The sense of relief as he got out of the taxi was like nothing he’d ever felt before, and even knowing most of it wasn’t his own didn’t make it any less overwhelming. Only the presence of the foot traffic in and out of Purgatory kept him from falling to his knees in gratitude, maybe doing some pavement-kissing.

Well, that and a sense of haste only slightly less urgent than a cattle prod. He fumbled the keys off the hook at his belt and unlocked the deadbolt, then keyed in the combination on the touchpad, wincing as the tiny crystalline tones tried to pierce his eardrums.

Are you sure you can do this, lanan? There might be another way. Just let me think, now that I can.

Josh shook his head. Letting himself into the small client lounge in the front, he locked the door behind himself and made straight for the tattoo studio.

No time. Every minute you’re disembodied makes it less likely you’ll ever get back, you said so yourself. And me…” He paused, his hand on the doorknob of his studio. “I’m not sure how much longer I can stand this.”

♦Deep Plunge:

For the last six hundred years or so, the only things reminding Lochlann Doran he’s a Fae have been his faceted aquamarine eyes and the fact that he can’t die. He’s been a wanderer for so long in the human world – over two thousand years – that he’s lost his magick, including the gift of healing that goes along with being a Fae of the Demesne of Water. Finding his SoulShare might get it back for him. But it might kill him, too.

Garrett Templar has been living on borrowed time, in a sense, since he was eighteen, when one of the johns he entertained to pay the bills while he danced at Purgatory infected him with HIV. It was always supposed to be a “manageable” disease, though, at least until a cure was found. Except he’s just found out that the virus in his system has inexplicably mutated into full-blown AIDS, and no known drug cocktail can even slow it down.

And when Lochlann and Garrett find each other at last, on Purgatory’s dance floor, the only thing as urgent as their need for one another is the hunger of an ancient evil to do whatever is necessary to possess Lochlann’s magick…

Deep Plunge Excerpt:

Shit. His grip tightened on the strap of his bag, ready to swing it — or ditch it, if it looked like that would help him escape . And for one sick, sweaty, gut-wrenching moment, he was ten years old again, hearing the kids closing in behind him, knowing there was no way in hell he was going to get away without another split lip, ruined shirt, blackened eye. Almost hearing his mother’s voice again. Garrett Lee Templar, I swear, you find more trouble than any ten other boys ever dreamed of. Do you think I can just make new clothes appear out of thin air?

He recognized that voice from somewhere. Slowly, he turned. And stared up into eyes that gleamed blue even in the crappy light from the streetlight on the corner.

He hadn’t had to rent his ass out for a while now, but the idea of a john following him home from the club still made his skin crawl. Yet there was something about those eyes, something different.

No. Fuck that shit. You get hurt the worst when you let yourself hope.

FirestormFinalCoverFirestorm BLURB:
Rian Sheridan is a foundling, a Northern Irish Catholic corner boy whose world was destroyed in fire, and reborn the same way, beside an Orangemen’s bonfire last July the Twelfth. A consuming, dimly-remembered pain in his past calls to him, taunting him, daring him to find it and lose himself to it in the S&M underground of Belfast.

Cuinn an Dearmad is the last surviving Fae Loremaster, and he’s just seen the beginning of the death of the Realm, the haven of the Fae race. The only hope of stopping it starts with him finding the Prince Royal of Fire he stole from the cradle, and lost in the human world, many years ago. He has a few guesses about where that hope ends, and he doesn’t like any of them.

Rian and Cuinn are an impossible pairing, two SoulShared Fae. Any two Fae will strike sparks, but these two Fae are a conflagration. Unable to stand one another, yet drawn into an escalating series of sexual collisions, their passion will either save a world or destroy it.

He gave up on trying to sleep, rolling onto his back and lying sprawled out in the great bed fit for a king. Or a Prince. Shite. He didn’t want to be a fecking Royal. Whatever that meant. But if there was one thing he could say he’d learned in life, it was that what he wanted had fuck all to do with what happened to him.

Though ever since the Twalf, last summer, there was one thing he nearly always got, when he wanted it. The thrill. They’d thought to break him that night, and perhaps they had, but after the breaking he’d been made anew. Into a man who craved what the bastards sought to shame him with, and who used them, in the end, more cruelly than they had used him. After all, he could use them, and others like them, any time he liked.

Addicted? Hell, no. Victorious.

Sunday expectations , Sounds of fall in the air and the week Ahead at ScatteredThoughts

flowers June

Sunday is  upon us once more.  How quickly it seems to come around each week.  Normally I would be outside planting, weeding, enjoying the gardens and the dogs but the sounds I hear lately remind me that fall is coming and preparations need to be made.   The whites, yellows and purples associated with late summer, early fall flowers are out in full force.  The “Daisy Mae:” Daisies are hanging in there, the Black-Eyed Susans have thwarted the deer, and the purples of liriope, False Dragonhead, and Great Blue Lobelias are just starting to make their presence known.

Overhead flocks of Canada Geese and Snow geese are reforming, heading to the marshes surrounding the Bay in huge masses, reading for migration and winter.  My feeders are being emptied at an astonishing rate after piddling interest all summer long.  Some leaves have started falling, and the sunlight has that slanted, cooler look to it that proclaims that the Summer Solstice has passed and it is filtering the landscape through an autumnal lens.

The pruning shears are out, the mulch bags waiting for someone other than me to cover the beds.  The hummingbirds are still here, the feeders still full, and the offerings in the yard are getting scarcer by the day.

It also means that GRL is fast approaching in October and I hope soon to be able to make an announcement about a new reviewer here at ScatteredThoughtsandRogueWords.  I love fall.  Its every bit as beautiful to me  as Spring and Summer. In fact it may be my favorite of all the Seasons.  Brisk, clean air that puts a snap to your step as your walk and a little color in your cheeks.  I know the dogs are happier…its terrier weather for sure.

Ahhh, the sounds of change is in the air…how sweet, how promising, how wonderful!

Review: Hard As Stone (SoulShares #1) by Rory Ni Coileain

Rating:  4.5 stars out of 5

Hard as Stone FinalLawyer Kevin Almstead has just been told he doesn’t have what it take to ever make partner. Apparently he has “no fire, no ambition”. That’s what he has just been told and Kevin isn’t sure that he doesn’t agree with that assessment. Depressed and unsure of his next step, Kevin heads out for a drink and wanders into Purgetory, a gay bar in Washington, DC. What and who he finds there will forever change his life and his outlook on the world.

All leather, long blond hair and sexy hot, Kiernan Guaire spells trouble for Kevin Almstead in every way.  For starters, he isn’t even human.  Kiernan Guaire is Fae,a Royal from the Demesne of Earth who was banished from his realm for the only crime the Fae will not tolerate…kin killing.   For killing his brother, Kiernan’s soul was sundered and he was sent through The Pattern to Earth.  One hundred and sixty five years later, Kiernan has wandered, lusted and lived clear of attachments and beholden to no one.  Then Kevin walks into Purgetory looking to drown his problems and finds Kiernan instead.  Kiernan’s life and everything changes for him as well.  For Kevin is his SoulShared, his other half.

Drawn into the SoulShare bond after one passionate night together, they separate unwilling and uncertain what that explosive moment meant to each other.  But strange things are happening at Kevin’s work.  Kiernan is having problems staying away from Kevin. And under the ground in Washington, DC an ancient enemy waits for its chance to free itself and walk the earth and Fae realms once more.  And bonding of Kevin and Kiernan might just give it the magic it needs….

Hard as Stone is the first in the SoulShares series and my first by Rory Ni Coileain.  My introduction to this amazing world building talent, creativity, and  Rory Ni Coileain’s marvelous characters had me staying up late until I finished the story and then grabbing immediately for the next in the series.  Just the mention of a storyline that includes a Fae thread and I’m involved.  Then upend that Fae into the modern world and let the fireworks begin or not, depending upon each author’s take on the subject.

Ni Coileain’s Fae may be magical but they are not terribly likable, especially to each other.  Ruthless, mercurial, and imperious.  Yes.  Gorgeous and forever young. Yes.  Dispicable?  Yes, that too.    Particularly, as I said , with each other.  The only rule they seem to abide by?  Dont’ kill each other.  Torture, maim, and terrorize, yes.  Killing? No.  Even if it is warranted.  They may not kill but they also don’t love.  This is a society of beings you want to avoid and they fall more along the lines of the old Fae of Irish lore.

Hard as Stone (and all the others) open in the realm of the Fae, a universe they walled off from ours, pulling the magic from Earth when the Fae left.   There we first meet Kiernan Guaire, already bound in silver and awaiting his fate.  We learn his crime and watch his tortuous passage through to Earth.  It’s a great start and it draws us into his pain and the scary place that is his people and home.

Waiting on Earth is Kevin Almstead.  Tall, kind, and gorgeous, Kevin’s life is on shaky ground.  Groomed to be a partner at a prestigious law firm, it now looks as thought that won’t happen and Kevin is pondering his next step.  Kevin is immediately someone we can identify with.  He is approachable and his disheartened state of mind is one that anyone who has been rejected or stymied at work can recognize.  I loved this character and thought he was a lovely balance of vulnerability and strength.

Hard as Stone takes place in Washington, DC and although there aren’t a lot of local flavor mentioned here outside of Adams Morgan, there isn’t any errors either which I appreciated.  In fact, I wish Purgatory actually existed.  The closest thing I could think of was The Crucible.  But Purgatory is vividly described from its lighting to the bar and floors.  It feels real and that successful element is a must here because Purgatory has a huge part to play in the stories so its ability to feel alive and present is as necessary to the series as the characters that drink there.

There are monsters here.  Human, fae and something far worse.  It speaks to Rory Ni Coileain’s ability as a writer that the dread she creates and the horror that is the Marfach will make you recoil from the pages and the terror that is rising from them.  And the fight against it is as desperate and wild as you can imagine.   I am still cringing just thinking about a passage or two when the Marfach comes to mind.  That’s a job well done indeed.

There are a number of plot threads introduced here that set up the books to come.  They will spark your interest and anticipation for the next story, Gale Force, in the series.  I loved the SoulShares concept and the idea of finding your other half against all odds.  A wonderful rationale behind an instant love/instant attraction…the fact that you recognize something so familiar about the person in front of you.  It’s a compelling thought and a great storyline.  I can’t wait to get to all the books in the series.

If you are a lover of a Fae/human connection and a fantasy that stretches into our world for unexpected consequences and love,, this is the story and series for you!  I highly recommend them but make sure your journey starts with this one, Hard as Stone.
