Review: Antagonist (Dads of Stillwater #1) by Ana Ashley

Rating: 3.25🌈

Antagonist is the first of Ana Ashley’s Dads of Stillwater series. Ashley ‘s story gives us all the necessary elements we need for a first novel. A foundation in the small town of Stillwater, with major events taking place at the elementary school, bakery, and other places that will be highlighted in this and other stories. We get a feel for it’s various citizens and township. Good and bad.

A overall theme of single dads , a section of liberal families versus a conservative “embedded bunch of pearl clutchers”, change versus status.

The first couple mirrors that image in their current lives. Bisexual attorney Harrison Davis is moving with his ex wife Stella and their child, Megan to Stillwater so Megan can have a better childhood.

Several terrific elements here. Harrison, Stella, and Megan are a great family unit even though Harrison and Stella are no longer married. Everyone is a fully fleshed character. No one is demonized over the end of the marriage. These are adults who respect each other and work in the best interests of their child.

Harrison is a bit lost in a small town environment but it’s his personality. It’s all well crafted and believable.

Fletcher, the artist and another single father who is the second main character is very engaging. Ashley has the father / son dynamics down perfectly so we fall in love with them as a family immediately. Gigi is adorable.

Fletcher has moments here that just keeps me frustrated with him. I not sure if it’s the author’s creation of his character or something in the storyline but the entire element with his ex, the dithering about even thinking of giving a narcissist personality(as written by this author) custody of a child because of a old promise comes across more as a need of story inserted drama then any believable plot line.

In reality, a person would have lawyered up faster then you could have said I don’t think so. But then a lot of the dramatic narrative would have been lost. That was me being polite.

The dithering about just was unreal , frustrating, and frankly, made me disconnect from the story a bit.

So was the whole outcome from the disagreements with the “pearl clutcher “ Karen here. Very disappointing.

So some very sweet, lovely elements and a great foundation for the series. A contemporary romance with two men with wonderful children and terrific found family dynamics.

It’s a nice start with some stumbling blocks.

I’m recommending it and will definitely go on to the next installment.

Review: Getting Married At Crofton Hall by Rebecca Cohen

I’ll be honest here and admit I’m torn as to how to rate this story.

Here’s the facts.

Getting Married At Crofton Hall by Rebecca Cohen is a novel I’ve been waiting on as I’ve followed the Crofton Earls from Cohen’s historical romances (The Crofton Chronicles) all the way through the Modern Crofton series, of which I thought this was the culmination of them both.

It’s not, but more on that later.

So it fair to say I’m a very invested reader and a person committed to these characters and their relationships. Plus I like the author’s writing style.

Getting Married at Crofton Hall becomes a novel of primarily 4 people, 2 couples. With a scattering of side relationships in their various stages, from completely settled and happy to troubled and verging on disastrous. All of which are either at the Hall or coming to the wedding.

What I should be completely enthusiastic about and happily invested in every element of their story is the main couple , Ben and Ashley, who are getting married.

No, instead they are where I have the biggest issues.

Who do I love? Chris Gamling, Crofton Hall’s new writer in residence, just back from a painful, career low stay in LA that sees him returning home in debt. Chris is such a lovely character, with his dandelion hair, utter sweetness, and a determination to stay true to himself.

Of course, love awaits him in the form of Ashley’s best friend and former bf, Jack Webb. A barrister, he’s here to be Ashley’s best man and all around support for the wedding. Having been recently dumped, he too could use his friend’s support as well.

Jack is snarky, intelligent, deep, and tremendously loyal. Watching these two slow burn connect is amazing. Watch out for that hair brush scene!

They are couple goals. And everything that Ben and Ashley aren’t. At least during this wedding.

Or should I say Ben isn’t . Because up until approximately 86 percent of this novel, I found Ben to be arrogant, unsupportive, oblivious, and frankly, unlivable.

Where is the Ben I enjoyed from the prior books? The one who at least had some semblance of intuition about Ashley’s thoughts and feelings.

Here he is gone. I couldn’t figure out if that personality was sacrificed for the groomzilla/wedding/stress plot needs or just forgotten. Either way to see it bound back remarkably towards the end, then disappear when Ben behaves badly under the influence of alcohol, then appear again. Well, it made Ashley seem like a stressed doormat for the majority of the time.

Their aspect of the story, Ben’s behavior, his expectation that Ashley would just tolerate his toxic words and actions, or that Cohen saw no issues with their relationship at this point, is problematic.

Love works things out . SMH. No, sometimes it doesn’t or shouldn’t.

There’s so much here to unravel. That Ben knew he was wrong and continues. His friend(s) points out some of the glaring issues. They are ignored.

That it take Ashley, not Ben, breaking, to almost make it right.

What is wrong here?

The fact that there’s a lot of healthy relationships in and around Crofton Hall I’m not sure the main couple is one of them.

The rating? For the other couples, the reality of the writing, and the fact that it does feel believable.

I love Jack and Chris. And many of the other couples. I would have told poor Ashley to get Ben into couple counseling before I got married to someone who treated him so poorly then proceeded with such self-involved excuses.

Or maybe if I was Cohen I wouldn’t have written Ben into someone who almost defies any connection from a reader. At least this one.

Cohen writes she has several more stories to tell in this series. If they are in the same vein as Chris and Jack, count me in. I quite appreciative of that pairing.

It’s based on them that this book gets a recommendation.

Review: The Deputy and His Enforcer (The Kincaid Pack #3) by Kiki Clark

Rating: 4🌈

The Deputy and his Enforcer is another good installment in Kiki Clark’s Kincaid Pack series.

Marcus Rivera is the Kincaid Pack’s Enforcer. Trusted with helping keep the secret of the supernaturals from the local humans as well as protecting his pack, that’s getting increasingly complicated when The Kincaid pack comes under constant surveillance and outside attacks.

These attacks come to the attention of the local law enforcement, of which some are human.

Deputy Robson Medina is someone who doesn’t understand why when dead bodies are found , Marcus Rivera is called in to handle it instead of himself.

This is a terrific mystery romance within the paranormal series. It has a mating bond, suspenseful scenes, mystery, and enough new information to move the series arc forward.

The characters are well written and the plot tightly crafted. Another plus in this growing series.

Definitely another recommendation.

Review: Honor (Operation Justice Force #3) by Reece Knightley

Rating: 4🌈

Operation Justice Force is such a excellent series and Honor continues this with a terrific couple and exciting storylines.

Oliver Rains is a ex Special Forces who has an immediate connection with the former chief of police Parker Johnson that joins the unit.

I’m not really a fan of instant love unless the author makes a genuine case for it for their couple. Whether by being able to telegraph a overpowering chemistry or delivering a understandable connection that makes a instant love feel real.

Knightley does a great job in making us believe that Oliver and Parker’s relationship is built on a foundation of communication, chemistry, and deeper understanding. It’s a honest feel to them as a unit.

That I loved.

There were things that lessened my own depth of connection to the story. That Oliver has a dangerous stalker that he kept a secret from his friends and agency? All I thought of were don’t they conduct background checks? That’s a huge issue that would be easily found out.

The sex trafficking element. They are taking down a major sex trafficking ring. They found a small number out of all the victims indicated. The follow up on those and the aftermath was given shorter space considering what the narrative implies those children went through. And the scene we shown as they are rescued.

For me if you’re going to use it as a storyline then all aspects should be treated accordingly.

The romance, the relationship between Oliver and Parker is the best element of this story. The stalker, the sex trafficking aspect are secondary in my opinion due to a couple of factors that made them a bit less realistic.

Honor is still highly entertaining and I’m recommending it . The fourth story is due out in a few months. I’ll be waiting.

Review: Mr. Romance (Franklin U Book 3) by Louisa Masters

Rating: 4.25

Mr. Romance is Louisa Masters’ offer to the multiple author series, Franklin U. And it’s frankly adorable!

Starting with the clueless but hugely friendly and kind Charlie Martin who’s inability to read social cues has those he comes into casual contact with thinking they are dating or something more interesting. Not that Charlie realizes it until it comes to a dramatic climax or someone else points it out to “Mr Oblivious “.

Then he’s upset that he’s accidentally hurting others while not realizing which actions he’s doing are the culprit.

Such a amazing, adorable person. A happy Golden Retriever on two legs! No, he’s got a bit more self awareness but towards others? Hmmm, no.

Masters has a fabulous character here.

But Charlie needs to be reigned in and have a tutorial in social cues.

That’s where Liam comes in, the man who created the Mr. Romance app and is sure to be able to tutor Charlie in how not to give off the boyfriend vibes to everyone he meets.

Liam is the anthesis of Charlie. He’s compact, athletic , likes business, romantic, and not concerned about dress. Whereas Charlie loves fashion, isn’t terribly sports minded, and is very wealthy.

Two beautifully written characters. One hilarious road to romance and love. Aided by several characters from another series and stories within this series.

I laughed. Grinned. Then laughed some more. Drunk Charlie is hilarious.

Some readers who haven’t read the Ghostly Guardians series you might not recognize some of the characters from that series that appear here. That will add a bit of a void or lack of foundation.

But the story is very entertaining. The couple fun and charming which made Mr. Romance a definite recommendation.

Review: The Hunter and His Mates (The Kincaid Pack #4) by Kiki Clark

Rating: 4.25🌈

The Hunter and His Mates is the fourth book in The Kincaid Pack series. Clark has been hinting at the triad she has at the center of this story for a while, ever since Gabriel the Hunter arrived on the scene.

Gabriel, someone not trusted by pack as part of the family, more foe then friend. Drake, the permanently injured shifter, a amputee since a enemy witch attack blew up his house, car and himself. It’s a change Drake is having trouble adjusting to emotionally and physically. That’s a great part of the story and relationship dynamics. Add to that Jamie, a hawk shifter, who’s crazy about both men and you have a complicated road to romance.

Along side the turbulent attraction they feel for each other, there’s the arc storylines of a mystery villain who is bent on tearing apart the Kincaid pack, and all the attacks happening on allied packs around them.

It’s a fast moving story, lots of action. Very entertaining. I just wish there was a bit more buildup between the three men, before bonding. I felt the Gabriel and Drake bond was very hot, but Jamie a bit less connected. I don’t know why Jamie doesn’t come across as strong a character as the others but he doesn’t. Which doesn’t really work when talking about someone who’s a red tailed hawk shifter. Something is off there.

Overall, another strong story and terrific installment moving the arc forward.

I’m recommending it and the series!

Review: How Not To Marry a Prince by Megan Derr

Rating: 3.5🌈

How Not To Marry a Prince by Megan Derr is a very sweet fantasy romance, very typical of Derr in terms of location and types of characters.

I found myself delighted by the main character, Prince Amador, his love of numbers, and, romance. Amador is such a kind, sweet endearing person. That makes the idea of people drawn to his personality and warmth understandable. And the romance that follows believable.

The thing that throws the book and entire story off is that the beginning chapter has been placed at the end of the novel.

Now whether this is by choice or accident I have no idea. But it’s highly annoying. You miss Prince Amador’s arrival into the kingdom and all sorts of important information.

So if you’re going to read this story, go to the back of the book, read the first chapter there, then proceed with the rest of the story.

It’s really why it didn’t get a higher rating.

If a book is for sale, and this is a accidental format issue, fix it. If this is on purpose, well, I found it irritating.

Still a sweet story.

Review: The Witch’s Familiar (Familiar Mates #1) by T.J. Nichols

Rating: 3.75🌈

Somehow I missed this series when it began so I’m catching up now. T.J. Nichols Familiar Mates series has nine books to date and The Witch’s Familiar is the one that launches it all.

It’s a entertaining story, full of romance, magical characters, and thrills. I did find it lacking in world building, especially when we land into electro mage Jude Sullivan’s predicament with a paranormal ruling council, The Coven. He’s in real trouble, again, this time he could be stripped of his magic.

Now, it’s assumed and understood through some of the dialogue that the human world and magical exists together, the mundane hasn’t a clue about the paranormal side, and obviously it should stay that way. But as to all the rest of the structure and who the Coven is? Nothing.

Except all the serious stuff that’s implied in bits and pieces throughout the rest of the book. Nichols has left a hole here and hopefully each book will continue to fill in more of the series foundation.

Jude Sullivan is given a mission as a test, complete it successfully and keep his powers or fail and have them removed. Seems a bit excessive. Plus there’s a obvious enemy on the Council.

At the small town where the killings are occurring that Jude needs to investigate is a lone bear shifter, Rob Mackenzie. He’s the town mechanic.

I adore this character. Mack is exactly what you’d want in a bear shifter. His personality suits the regional location and his temperament.

The manner in which Nichols has the two men meet is a tad odd because who jumps to such wild assumptions without any research or clues. It made no sense. It was just one of those “narratively directed” choices that always seem so out of place.

Especially when the later combined dynamics and growing relationship indicates anything but character driven actions.

The creatures, their magical history were amazing, and the investigation/hunt to capture the mystery animal was a great feature. Including Mack’s reaction to everything.

I really enjoyed the romantic aspects of their relationship, but wish they had gone further with the familiar/mate part as it seemed so serious with big ramifications, but we got none of that.

We also had two characters , Jude’s enemy on the Council, and Mack’s ex, each of whom promised more drama. They faded out at the end.

Those are the issues that nagged at me.

The Witch’s Familiar (Familiar Mates #1) by T.J. Nichols is a quick read. Light, suspenseful with a terrific couple. If you can set aside those issues that I mentioned above, you will find this a very satisfying paranormal romance.

Review: Once A Gentleman (Love in Portsmouth #2) by Eliot Grayson

Once A Gentleman is a M/M Regency romance by Eliot Grayson, the second in the author’s Love in Portsmouth series.

This reminded me why I loved the Regency novels so with characters at near constant flash points with each other , starting from the moment Kit Hewlett fell awkwardly into the arms of Andrew Turner, who walked into the bookstore Kit was working at.

Then fired from because of the incident. The first of many incendiary arguments stemming from misunderstandings and assumptions quickly follows.

Grayson’s two person pov contributes substantially towards putting the reader in the middle of this combustible relationship as it shouts, snarks, daydreams, argues, threatens, and finally ends up , in love . But even that has it’s stumbling moments.

The characters need to undergo, especially Andrew, a sea change in terms of his life and character. He does so by bringing Kit into his house, with all of Kit’s restraints and expectations. And Kit’s reactions towards Andrew’s own wildly unwanted impulsive actions to pull Kit towards him.

In between all the drama and character actions happening at the Turner household, there’s the ship being repaired and readied for a new assignment.

Grayson saves the reality of Turner’s maritime career until the last section of this story, bringing with it one of the most romantic moments of their journey together.

There’s more then once you will want to knock heads here over continuing issues and slights that could be solved by better communication. But I was absolutely committed to this story and couple, and read this book straight through from start to finish.
