Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have one of the authors that are Ari McKay here today answering questions and talking about their latest release, Striking Sparks, a Dreamspun Desire title from Dreamspinner Press.  Welcome McKay!

~

Hi, everyone! I’m the McKay half of Ari McKay, and I’m happy to be here with a guest post at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words in honor of our upcoming release from Dreamspinner Press, Striking Sparks.

I’ve got a few interview questions I’d like to answer, and while I’ll mostly be answering from my own perspective, I’ve known Ari long enough (twelve years and counting) that I can speak for her on some things as well.

Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And why?

We’re a mix of both. When we begin a new book, we develop the characters first and then flesh out the plot. We start with the characters since their motives and relationship will drive the action, and we figure out what their dynamic is going to be. For example, Beau and Jake start out as rivals in Striking Sparks. An argument they had in high school shaped the men they’ve become, and the words they said to each other in anger color their interactions at first. So our main goal was to figure out how we were going to move them past the old hurts and into a new understanding.

For less action-heavy books, we tend to create a loose outline and then dive in and see where the story takes us. A lot of times, the characters will throw in wrenches we didn’t expect, and we have to reshape the story to accommodate that. Ari and I both agree that listening to what the characters want is better than trying to force them to fit our preconceived ideas of what the story “should” be. Inevitably, the finished story is stronger if we let the story develop in the way that feels most right and natural for the characters.

But there are some books that require more rigorous planning. Several of our Herc’s Mercs books were plotted out in advance, and while we did leave wiggle room for changes, we knew where we were going to start, where we were going to end up, and (more or less) how we were going to get there before we started writing. That series has more action-adventure elements, so we needed to decide on the main plot points beforehand in order to work toward each one in a way that would make sense and develop the characters’ relationship along the way.

Can an author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

I think it’s fine for an author to have favorite characters. I’d be surprised if there were many authors who didn’t! Maybe a character is a favorite because they were easy to write or because the book was written during a time in the author’s life that they have fond memories of in general, so there’s this positive association. Maybe the character embodies what the author would like to be themselves. Maybe the character is just plain likable, flaws and all. Whatever the reason, I think most of us do have characters that we enjoy(ed) writing more than others.

As you can probably tell from my answer to the previous question, Ari and I view our characters more as muses than as toys in a sandbox. We don’t pick them up and move them around exactly the way we want; we get in their heads to figure out who they are, and we listen to their voices.

Sometimes, their voices are really, really loud.

For us, the loudest characters are often our favorites. They make their desires clear and tell us exactly what they want to do and say, which makes writing them more like taking dictation than pulling teeth.

Some of my favorite characters are also the ones I had fun writing, often because they were funny or because they were significantly different from me, and I had fun slipping inside their skin and being outrageous in ways I’m not in real life.

Ari and I have a few favorite characters and couples out of our body of work, but I think if we had to choose an ultimate favorite, it would be Daryl and Emerson from Herc’s Mercs: Bloody But Unbowed. They’re an “opposites attract” couple, but they clicked so well, and we had fun writing them snarking at each other.

If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

Jane Eyre is my first choice. I’ve loved that book since I was thirteen years old, and I’ve read it many times over the years. To this day, I admire Jane’s fierce independence. The line “Reader, I married him” tells you everything you need to know about her and her strong sense of agency – and why I love her.

I’d take my complete collection of Jane Austen’s novels. Who doesn’t love a delicate skewering of 19th century social conventions? If I could take Stephen King’s entire body of work, I would. If not, I’d go with Carrie, The Stand, and his short story/novella collections. I’d have to throw in some Gail Carriger, Jaqueline Carey, and Kelly Link too. There are others (there are always “oh, and—!” books and authors when talking to a bookworm), but those are the ones I’d pick today. Tomorrow, it might be different! Except for Jane Eyre. That one is always first.

Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

Oh, we draw inspiration from just about anything! We refer to being inspired as having a plot bunny gnawing on our ankles. We’ve gotten inspiration from real life events, books, movies, song lyrics, art… you name it! With Striking Sparks, we were inspired by photos of Paul Newman and Robert Redford as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Those two men were ruggedly hot together, and we wanted to write a couple of cowboys based on them. In the end, our characters grilled the beef instead of herded it, but they’re both macho Texans. Jake is based on Newman and Beau is based on Redford (without the mustache).

Striking Sparks will be released by Dreamspinner Press on December 15th. We hope you enjoy it! Happy holidays from both of us to all of you!

About Striking Sparks

The stakes are high and the heat is on.

Beau Walker, owner of the Barbecue Shack, needs the help of Jake Parnell, his one-time rival and secret crush, in a televised barbecue competition. Beau is a proud man, but the stakes are high, and smart, sexy Jake is his only hope, even if being around Jake reawakens the attraction he’s fought for years.

Jake left his hometown, determined to build a life somewhere his sexuality wouldn’t hurt his family’s restaurant business—and far away from hunky, obstinate Beau Walker. Then his twin, Josh, is killed, and Jake returns to support his brother’s wife and children. Despite his reservations, he agrees to go head-to-head against Beau on national television. Between stress and grief, as well as pride and determination, only one thing is certain—the heat between Beau and Jake extends well beyond the kitchen.

About the Authors

Ari McKay is the professional pseudonym for Arionrhod and McKay, who have been writing together for over a decade. Their collaborations encompass a wide variety of romance genres, including contemporary, fantasy, science fiction, gothic, and action/adventure. Their work includes the Blood Bathory series of paranormal novels, the Herc’s Mercs series, as well as two historical Westerns: Heart of Stone and Finding Forgiveness. When not writing, they can often be found scheming over costume designs or binge watching TV shows together.

Arionrhod is a systems engineer by day who is eagerly looking forward to (hopefully) becoming a full time writer in the not-too-distant future. Now that she is an empty-nester, she has turned her attentions to finding the perfect piece of land to build a fortress in preparation for the zombie apocalypse, and baking (and eating) far too many cakes.

McKay is an English teacher who has been writing for one reason or another most of her life. She also enjoys knitting, reading, cooking, and playing video games. She has been known to knit in public. Given she has the survival skills of a gnat, she’s relying on Arionrhod to help her survive the zombie apocalypse.

A MelanieM Release Day Review:Holly & Hockey Boots by V.L. Locey

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

holly-hockey-bootsMinor league goalie Adam Seiger is a nice guy. He’s kind, cute, and a little quirky (but show me a goalie who isn’t) and he loves to interact with fans. During a meet and greet after a game Adam meets Cason Reyes, a hard-working young man with stunning amber eyes and a smile as sweet as a candy cane. Desperate to see Cason again, Adam does something more than a little naughty.

To add insult to the egg nog, it appears that one little white lie may end Adam’s chance of having a merry Christmas with a new boyfriend. Will he end up with nothing but a lump of coal in his stocking, instead of the man who owns his heart?

Adorable, totally adorable.  That describes both the story and the main character of Adam Seiger.  Gay, black, Canadian, minor league hockey player, adopted by his Aunt and Uncle when young, this man could have been a Mountie, he’s so sweet, nice, and yes, adorable…even in his faults.  That would be the lag time in between what comes out his mouth and the time it takes his brain to think it might be a bad idea to say that.    His brain goes awandering while the mouth just motors on.  Not always a great thing as Adam finds out when he spies the man of his dreams during a game.

I’ve enjoyed V.L. Locey’s stories before.  The author always manages to put in enough interesting quirks to their characters and storylines that it makes me take notice.  Extra spice, a V.L. Locey punch as it were.  Its the same here.  The other character?  Cason Reyes, is biracial with a fascinating background and a nephew to raise.  Both men have background that actually made me growl in frustation that I didn’t get enough time with each man’s family or get to delve deep enough into their stories.  They are that interesting and the people in their families we get to know are believable enough that we want more time with them too.

Other special touches?  The interaction with the team members.  Ray, Adam’s roomate with his own special kink?  Hilarious!  Plus I liked their acceptance of a gay teammate without any special acknowledgement or fanfare while mentioning that might not be realistic in the major leagues.  Nice reality check.  And then there was the holly branches.  I’ll leave the significance of that to the story.

I’d love to see Locey continue this into a series or at least give us a followup  story.  These two certainly deserve it.  We need to see what happens next.  I want more!  After reading this, you will too.

Cover art doesn’t really pull me to the book,  Doesn’t say holidays, and doesn’t really speak to the story.

A Melanie Advent Calendar Review Day 13: Guardian Angels (2016 Advent Calendar – Bah Humbug) by Geneva Vand

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

guardian-angelOne snowy evening, a car wreck in front of his toy store triggers terrible memories for Jake. Suddenly, he is in the midst of another winter storm—and another accident, one that not everyone walked away from. When he returns to the present, Jake is on the ground, being watched over by a guardian angel in the form of a kind man named Eli. Eli is no stranger to panic attacks and PTSD, and he’s happy to help Jake get home—where the weather forces him to remain for the night. For Jake, it could be the first step toward a life free from fear and loneliness.

Geneva Vand has written a heartwarming story of pain and loss turned into recovery and love at holidays.  Its a story that by all accounts should be much larger than its 36 pages because it feels like a novel.  Its characters have dimension, their pasts and its angst is believable as is its accompanying pain.

Jake’s PTSD is triggered by a car crash in front of his toy store.  Vand makes us feel every terrifying moment for Jake and we hurt for him.  Our connection to this character is immediate.

The stranger who realizes what is happening to Jake and takes care of him is Eli, someone who Jake soon starts to regard as his “guardian angel”.  As these two men form a relationship, letting barriers fall, and revealing their pasts full of loss and pain, we can see hope for them both and a possible future unfold.  What a joy!

Looking for a heartwarming story to read for the holidays?  Look no further than Guardian Angels by Geneva Vand.  Beautifully written, and full of hope and romance, the wonderful emotions that carry you through to the end that will leave you smiling for hours.

Cover by Paul Richmond is the brand cover for the series.  Still wonderful.

An Alisa Review: 2 Days Later by CM Corett

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

2-days-laterNate Beckett doesn’t expect much from life, and he definitely doesn’t believe in New Year’s celebrations or resolutions. A happy New Year? Not likely. As the manager of McGee’s bar, the best he can hope for is a drama-free night. One glance at the sexy young man on the dance floor and that hope is long gone. Once again, his young neighbor Justin is back to tempt and torment him. Despite the undeniable attraction, Nate knows he’s too old and jaded for someone like him, so the time has come to reject Justin. It’s for his own good!

Justin may be young and inexperienced, but he knows what he needs. His New Year’s resolution—to tempt and win Nate over. One lame seduction attempt later, and he’s on his way home in a cab. Alone. But later that night, Justin wakes up battered and bruised on Nate’s doorstep, and Nate insists that Justin stay with him. The big, beautiful man’s protective and caring instincts are definitely kicking in.

Maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance for a happy New Year after all!

This was such a sweet short story.  Nate is a jaded bar manager and he just knows that he wouldn’t be good for Justin.  When he finds Justin beaten up he decides he should protect him.  Justin knows how to be the perfect temptation for Nate and takes the opportunity to push his buttons.

Nate has got to be one of the most stubborn people alive, but he does realize his mistakes before it’s too late.  We never really learn anything about Nate’s past so I never fully understood why he was so sure he and Justin weren’t a good fit.  Justin was adorable and it is wonderful for him to finally get the man he deserved along with the love and protection he desired.

Cover art by Natasha Snow is beautiful and great for this story.

An Ali Audiobook Review: Absinthe of Malice (Sinners #5) by Rhys Ford and Tristan James (Narrator)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
absinthe-of-malice-audiobookWe’re getting the band back together.

Those five words send a chill down Miki St. John’s spine, especially when they’re spoken with a nearly religious fervor by his brother-in-all-but-blood, Damien Mitchell. However, those words were nothing compared to what Damien says next.

And we’re going on tour.

When Crossroads Gin hits the road, Damien hopes it will draw them closer together. There’s something magical about being on tour, especially when traveling in a van with no roadies, managers, or lovers to act as a buffer. The band is already close, but Damien knows they can be more—brothers of sorts, bound not only by familial ties but by their intense love for music.

As they travel from gig to gig, the band is haunted by past mistakes and personal demons, but they forge on. For Miki, Damie, Forest, and Rafe, the stage is where they all truly come alive, and the music they play is as important to them as the air they breathe.

But those demons and troubles won’t leave them alone, and with every mile under their belts, the band faces its greatest challenge—overcoming their deepest flaws and not killing one another along the way.
I enjoyed this story and I thought it was a creative way to give us updates on all four of the couples in one story.  The guys are on the road as the blurb says, but a lot the story is about Miki starting to work through things.  Since Miki is my all time favorite from this series that was a great thing for me.  The story follows the guys on their first tour and lot of things happen.  It’s pretty fast paced and is filled with some serious moments and some more light-hearted ones.  Even though the guys are on the road, their partners and other family members also make frequent appearances.  Brigid and Donal steal every scene they’re in for me. I just adore them both.
I don’t want to spoil the plot and say more about it but know that it is fast paced and entertaining.  The four relationships are in various places and things are a little more challenging for two of the couples but overall they’re all doing well and it was really touching to see them work through their various issues.  The end is not really a cliffhanger but definitely leaves you ready to get the next book as soon as possible.
This book was narrated by Tristan James who has also narrated the previous other books in the series.  This was my first time doing one of these books on audio and I enjoyed his narration a lot.  There were a lot of characters in this but I was never confused as to which one was talking.  There are also various accents from different countries and I thought he did those well too.  I did struggle a bit with the beginning of each chapter as they recount a moment from the past or song lyrics.  I prefer those when I’m reading the books.  It works better for me when I can see them.  It’s a small complaint and one that might be just an issue for me.  Overall I really liked the narration and I thought the narrator did a really good job.
Cover by Reese Notley:  I like this cover a lot.  It’s striking and the color really catches the eye, plus it goes with the book’s title.

Author Bio:

Lex Chase once heard Stephen King say in a commercial, “We’re all going to die, I’m just trying to make it a little more interesting.” Now, she’s on a mission to make the world a hell of a lot more interesting.

Weaving tales of cinematic, sweeping adventure—and depending on how she feels that day—Lex sprinkles in high-speed chases, shower scenes, and more explosions than a Hollywood blockbuster. Her pride is in telling stories of men who kiss as much as they kick ass. If you’re going to march into the depths of hell, it better be beside the one you love.

Lex is a pop culture diva, her DVR is constantly backlogged, she has intense emotions about Hannibal’s Hannigram, and unapologetically loved the ending of Lost. She wouldn’t last five minutes without technology in the event of the apocalypse and has nightmares about refusing to leave her cats behind.

Excerpt

Gareth shifted uneasily in the darkened amphitheater. Another scene change. The effects were lovely and sometimes awe-inspiring, but he’d gotten the idea in the first half hour. He was ready to go.

He glanced to his left at Edge, who seemed fascinated with the show. Intriguing, since Edge had the attention span of a gnat. The other guys were more restless, jabbing each other when the bare-breasted art pieces appeared, but they managed to stay on the near side of rude.

He settled back for the duration. Maybe a little catnap. The lights came up as he started to close his eyes. He heard an indrawn breath and looked up. Holy, bloody, everlasting hell.

In the center of the vast stage, on a rotating platform in a single perfect spotlight, was David, the masterwork of Michelangelo. Gareth had seen it in Florence several times, and every sense he had told him he was looking at the actual statue, although his mind knew this was a human being. Glowing, luminous, absolutely still… sweet bloody Christ, how could someone do it? How could they have found a person so perfect?

He noticed a deep stillness in the audience and also among his mates. Edge was absolutely motionless. Unusual for him. But the statue, the guy, was just that beautiful.

Gareth cocked his head. The model’s legs were not as big and muscular as the Michelangelo. This “statue” was a bit leaner and even more graceful. The pedestal kept turning. He squinted. Bloody hell, he’d seen that perfect ass before. He peered into the pool of light as the David rotated. He’d seen those amazing cheekbones.

It was the guy from the beach and the shop. Gareth rifled through his program for the name. David Underwood. The one who owned the gallery. The fag. Gareth shifted onto his hip, leaning away from Edge. Wouldn’t do to let his pouf-hating friend see his massive erection.

Eric Arvin

We received news today that Eric Arvin passed away.  After a long battle with his illness and with amazing courage and support from his family, he’s now gone but with his stories and our memories of him, he will never be forgotten.

Eric Arvin, the amazing author of such wonderful stories such WOKE UP IN A STRANGE PLACE, THE MINGLED DESTINIES OF CROCODILES & MEN, SUBSURDITY, SIMPLE MEN, and many other incredible stories, was such a vibrant soul.   Readers got to know Eric through his writing alone or his vids.  But some of  us lucky enough to meet and get to talk to him at GRL while he was still attending, got to see the sense of humor, fun, and kindness that he always displayed.

The wildness and amazing scope of his imagination?  Ahh…well that ran free in his stories.  The Mingled Destinies of Crocodiles & Men remains one of my favorites to this day for its dark storytelling and world building.  He never shied away from the dark caverns of the mind and soul, poking and prodding at the shadows to expose the truths, using monsters and men and fantasy to stretch our minds and hearts.  But his  fiction brought love, romance and yes, humor as well.  Eric Arvin wrote it all.   He lived it too.  He will be missed.

A Jeri Release Day Review: Noble Intentions by Andrew Grey

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5
noble-intentionsOne thing you can count on with an Andrew Grey book is a good romance. He didn’t disappoint.
Robert is a barrister in England working for the person who didn’t always have a voice. The old man getting evicted, the small shop owner being sued, etc. Raised by his mother, they are very close and see each other often. But then his world is turned upside down when he finds out an uncle he didn’t know about died and being the next male heir, he inherits not only the estate but the title of Earl of Hanford. And the enormous debt left behind.
On a trip to America for business, he signs up with a match maker and is quickly set up on a date with Daniel. A super rich business man who came from nothing and made himself into everything. But no matter how much money he has, he still feels like that kid who went to prep school on scholarship because his mother didn’t have the money. The rich kids at school didn’t let him forget it either.
Robert and Daniel expect very little of their last minute date, but find themselves drawn together. Their chemistry is undeniable. So once they really start talking, they find that they can help each other out. Daniel has the money to help Andrew and Andrew has the title that would make Daniel really feel as if he has made it in life, A business agreement if you will. Until real feelings get involved.
So as they work together to bring the estate back to life, they find themselves falling in love.
I found this to be a sweet, romantic story. I enjoyed hearing about the history involved and how Daniel so quickly thought of different things to bring money in to the estate so that Robert didn’t have to let it go and sell it. I expected Daniel to be the prickly one of the relationship, but really it was Robert. Daniel did everything he could for Robert, out of love and well being but Robert was just seeing it as Daniel trying to simply get a title.
Allowing themselves to love and be loved. Figuring out that they were far better together than separate. A lovely, sweet, romantic story.
Cover art by L.C. Chase works perfectly for the story and characters.

A VVivacious Advent Calendar Review Day 12: #ChristmasHatesYouToo by E.F. Mulder

Rating – 2 Stars out of 5

christmashatesyoutoo-by-e-f-mulderNoel Beebe is unlucky in love as can be demonstrated by the fact that he never even got to see the last guy he fell in love with. Now Noel is back on social networking sites to get another chance at love and Ethan might just be the answer.

Ethan and Noel bond over the fact that they both hate their birthdays.  So as a colossal fuck you to Christmas for ruining Noel’s birthday they spend an entire day denouncing the holiday spirit in the air. When the videos of Noel making a very good impression of Scrooge get viral on the internet, Noel is in for a world of hate. But looks like Noel’s infamy might finally get him some luck in his love life.

This story comes across as a very disjointed read. Personally I just couldn’t understand or get behind the sequence of events in this story because to me it felt like the author decided on what would happen first and then went back and thought about how this would/could further the story. So the story reads like a series of events awkwardly finishing in an ending which feels unnatural.

What I couldn’t get behind in this story was Noel’s social networking as a means to meet new people. I mean I guess it might be the new future but Noel didn’t take any precautions to safeguard his interests, I mean he gave his address to two men without verifiably knowing anything about the other two. Also I feel that the blurb of this story is misleading, I thought I was going to read a story about a guy taking revenge on Christmas for overshadowing his birthday but instead we get a guy who actually loves Christmas and is instead dragged along by another guy who wants him to denounce Christmas just for fun.

A lot of the side characters felt like an afterthought. Initially when we meet Noel he comes across as a insanely optimistic loner reeking of desperation, the kind of guy who spends all his time on social networking sites, talks to his dog like he doesn’t have anybody else to talk to and most incriminating of all spends days in an online relationship where he reveals too much information and even ends up falling in love only to have the guy vanish on him. But by the end of the story Noel has eight siblings, a best friend and even some awesome work friends who he is very close too and not only that he seems to be involved a lot in social causes and in the lives of his god-daughters. Now I don’t know about you but for me Noel’s latter characteristics seemed to oddly contradict his former ones.

Overall this story is awkward and its main character is too gullible and comes across as a push over.

Cover Art by L. C. Chase. I liked the cover a lot; it was a nice representation of the story.
