Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have BA Tortuga here today to share something about herself and the characters in her latest story (which I loved), Trial by Fire.  Welcome, BA.

Telling Our Stories

Hey, y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and lover of stories – hearing and telling.

Whenever people ask me why I write cowboys, I tell them those are the people I grew up with, those are the people I know. I write the folks that I heard telling their stories, the people that I shared memories with. Not all of the stories are good ones, not all of them are classy – shit, not many of them are – but they’re ours and I’m proud to share their voices.

Now, if you want polished men that never lose their tempers or get themselves in trouble with their big mouths, these aren’t the cowboys for you. Shit, I couldn’t even manage to write a billionaire rancher from Australia who owns his own private jet to be this super class-act. Somehow, when you scratch Lachlan, underneath the fancy-assed business suit you find a red-blooded, hot-headed man that intends to get what he wants.

Grins

Here, I’ll let y’all meet him a little bit.

“I—shit, mate, I hate being the bastard to bring bad news.”

His scalp prickled, and goose pimples rose on his arms. “Just tell me.”

“Ades was in a plane accident three weeks ago over in the States. She and her husband.”

Jesus. He felt as if Rick had hit him with a hammer, right in the belly. How could that be possible? His baby sister, gone off this earth?

“I’m sorry as hell, mate. I saw a little blip on the AP feed. All that searching and I missed it until today.”

“You have the details now?” He didn’t want to know, but he had to. His mum… she deserved to know.

“I do. Lachy. There’s lots.”

He rubbed his eyes with his free hand. “How much? You said she was married.” He’d not have guessed.

“Yes. A bull rider from Texas. They… they got married two and a half years ago. They had…. Oh shit, mate. There’s a little one. A little sheila. Three and a half months old.”

His heart stopped for a moment. Really stopped. “She wasn’t on the plane.”

“No. No, she was with her father’s family.”

“Thank God.” His hands shook, his whole body going shocky. “What. Where is she now?”

“Living with the Sheffields. That’s the family.”

“Wait. She married Landon Sheffield?” Sheffield was a tiny little bastard. What the hell had Addie seen in him? That motherfucker had been a guest in his house. Snake in the ruddy grass.

“Yeah. You know him?”

“Yank bull rider. He was over here for some big tour. They did a promotional shoot up here.” He was going to lose his shit.

“There’s a twin brother. Uh….” He heard papers shuffling. “Holden. He’s named on the will as the guardian.”

“Not the grandparents?”

“No, mate.”

“Damn it.” Okay, that wasn’t going to work. He’d never met the brother, but the Sheffields were rodeo people. A little girl needed a stable home. Not some nomadic bullshit life where nothing stayed the same for a week at a time. She needed a home. Her mom was gone, and he hadn’t even known.

“How do I find them?” Lachlan asked.

Let me tell, y’all. When Lachlan gets his happy ass to Texas, sparks fly.

There’s a reason the working title of this story was “Aussie vs Texan.”

Much love, y’all.

BA

Trial by Fire Blurb

One Aussie. One Texan. One baby. One hell of a fight.

When his sister and her husband are killed in an accident, Aussie cattle station owner Lachlan McCoughney rushes to Texas to rescue their infant daughter, Chloe. He expects to find his niece living in squalor with the Sheffields, a rodeo family.

Instead, Lachlan finds Holden Sheffield, a salt-of-the-earth cowboy running a huge business operation. They want to explore their mutual attraction despite the many problems thrown their way, and together, they must find a way to give Chloe a new family and find a love that spans thousands of acres and two continents.

About BA Tortuga

Texan to the bone and an unrepentant Daddy’s Girl, BA Tortuga spends her days with her basset hounds and her beloved wife, texting her sisters, and eating Mexican food. When she’s not doing that, she’s writing. She spends her days off watching rodeo, knitting and surfing Pinterest in the name of research. BA’s personal saviors include her wife, Julia Talbot, her best friend, Sean Michael, and coffee. Lots of coffee. Really good coffee.

Having written everything from fist-fighting rednecks to hard-core cowboys to werewolves, BA does her damnedest to tell the stories of her heart, which was raised in Northeast Texas, but has heard the call of the  high desert and lives in the Sandias. About Between Ghosts

In 2003, journalist Connor Regan marched through London to add his voice to a million others, decrying the imminent invasion of Iraq. Eight months later, his brother, James, was killed in action in Mosul.

Three years on, Connor finds himself bound for Iraq to embed with an elite SAS team. He sets his boots on the ground looking for closure and solace—anything to ease the pain of his brother’s death. Instead he finds Sergeant Nathan Thompson.

Nat Thompson is a veteran commander, hardened by years of combat and haunted by the loss of his best friend. Being lumbered with a civilian is a hassle Nat doesn’t need, and he vows to do nothing more than keep the hapless hack from harm’s way.

But Connor proves far from hapless, and too compelling to ignore for long. He walks straight through the steel wall Nat’s built around his heart, and when their mission puts him in mortal danger, Nat must lay old ghosts to rest and fight to the death for the only man he’s ever truly loved.

A MelanieM Review: At Your Service by Ariel Tachna

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

AtYourServiceFSWhen Anthony Mercer walked into Au cœur du terroir, he was looking for good food and a pleasant evening spent with a friend. He never expected to meet—and sleep with—Paul Delescluse, a waiter at the restaurant. After spending a magical week together in Paris, Anthony must return to his life in North Carolina, while Paul remains in France.

Despite the distance and the lack of promises between them—Paul wants sex, not a relationship—Paul and Anthony forge a solid friendship. Then Anthony’s job takes him back to Paris, this time to stay. Paul is thrilled to have him back, but Anthony has a harder choice: be another of Paul’s conquests or fight for the relationship he knows they could have, if only Paul would believe it.

From the moment we enter the story of At Your Service, its immediately clear that France, and its culture is going to be on loving display as a major character in Ariel Tachna’s story.  From the language to the food to the vividly described local venues, the reader feels as connected to the settings as Anthony and Paul due to the deep affection that the author holds for the people and places she is writing about.  I cannot tell you how much that helps to elevate a story as it does here.

The characters are introduced quickly as it needs to be, given the time frame the author is working within.  A week to meed and fall in love.  Possible?  Yes and definitely while in Paris.  God, that city has its own magic.   And Paul and Anthony definitely click over  the food and wine of the restaurant Au cœur du terroir and other places Paul takes Anthony too.  Its a quiet joy watching the men connect with each other even knowing what’s coming and the fear of relationships that returns along with Paul’s ex.

However, Paul’s has far darker issues than a simple fear of relationships and Tachna does a wonderful job  of not glossing over the real pain involved for both parties in the sexual issues here.   It took a story I was expected to be merely a pleasant romance into one with with emotional heft and characters that showed real growth by the end of the story.

If you love your stories with some angst, travel and struggles towards romance, then At Your Service by Ariel Tachna is the story for you.  I absolutely recommend it.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is a delight and speaks towards the location.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Bound (Guards of Folsom, Book Five) by S.J.D. Peterson

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

BoundThe story of Tek Cain and Jamie Ryan that began with Roped continues in Bound as their past catches up to them. Tek and Jamie both work at the Guards of Folsom BDSM club in New York City. A few years earlier, they ran from the motorcycle club they had been involved with from birth. Both their fathers were among the founders, and when Tek was born, it was decided he’d someday be the leader. Born on the same day in the same year, the two men grew up together, and in Roped, they discovered what they felt for each other was much more than friendship.

After escaping from the motorcycle club, and the feds that were after them and other members of the club, they started to forge a new life with a new set of friends—the host of characters from the Guards of Folsom series. As this last installment of the series opens, Tek has just found out that Jamie has been kidnapped by Rocco, the leader of their club, and Rocco wants revenge—on both of them.

From the blurb, I assumed that Jamie’s kidnapping would occupy most of the story, however, Tek got help from Tackett, Blake, and Max and was able to free Jamie within the first third of the story. The balance of the story centers on the men getting back to where they were before. They do not live a BDSM lifestyle; they just occasionally do rope scenes, but neither man is able to go back to playing after the traumatic events surrounding the kidnapping. They are also concerned that others may know their new location and come after them—others that include the feds or some former club members—and they worry whether or not they should stay in New York. The problem is that they don’t want to leave their friends—good friends like Blake and Max and others who provide friendship and support throughout the story.

I liked this story, but like Roped, I didn’t highly enjoy it. I think the bottom line is that I couldn’t warm to these characters, even after two books. I do, however, love the other characters in the series, and they all appeared at various times throughout this book, giving readers an opportunity to experience their emotional growth and changes as well. One issue that bugged me was the lack of follow-up to a scene that occurs early in the story between one of the other couples. Without naming names… <spoiler>

I’m saddened that the series has ended since it really marks the end of two series: both Whispering Pines Ranch and the Guards of Folsom series. I had no idea when I read Lorcan’s Desire four years ago that I would grow so close to a group of characters, including Ty, the one who was originally cast as a villain. Both are great series, rich in characters that give a wonderful perspective on various forms of the BDSM lifestyle. I recommend it to anyone interested in learning more. This book is a must read for those who have enjoyed this series as it brings closure not only to Tek and Jamie, but to several other couples as well.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is just as beautiful as others in the series with a gray and white photo of the upper torso of a lone man, head bowed and wrists chained. Very poignant and emotional.

Guards of Folsom: Book Five

Tek Cain & Jamie Ryan work at the Guards of Folsom BDSM club. After two years on the run from their old motorcycle club and the Feds, Tek & Jamie are finally able to relax and enjoy their new life in New York City. But the past won’t stay buried, and when the MC resurfaces, it’s Jamie who pays the price. Tek and the rest of the members at the Guards of Folsom must work together to get back one of their own.

In this, the final installment in the Guards of Folsom series, everyone must come together, bound as one in their quest to find Jamie and bring him home once and for all.

From the Author…

Wow, what a wild ride this series has been. It all began with the Whispering Pines series and Ty’s lack of a Happily Ever After. I couldn’t have known when I decided to write Riveted (a free read for Ty & Blake) that it would lead to yet another series, but I’m so glad it did. I fell in love with the scatter brained Micah, wept for Mason, and cheered for Aiden. Tek & Jamie? What can I say, other than, I lurve them so hard. Thank you to all those who took this journey with me. I hope it was as rewarding to read as it was for me to write.

~Hugs~

Exclusive Excerpt

A man Tek didn’t recognize rushed into the club dressed all in black, but it wasn’t the black attire that normally was seen within the walls of the Guards of Folsom. This guy was medium in stature, head shaved, and he looked more like a member of a tactical unit, right down to the weapons on his belt, than any kind of player. He spotted Blake standing near the bar talking to Ty and made a beeline for him. So did Tek.

“Sir, we’ve got the intel you requested.”

Definitely military or law enforcement, but the realization didn’t cause Tek a shred of nervousness. “Where are they?” he demanded.

Lawman raked his eyes up and down Tek, sizing him up, no doubt.

“It’s okay, Nick,” Blake said and pointed toward Tek. “This is Tek Cain. It’s his partner that’s gone missing.”

“Sorry to hear that,” Nick acknowledged with a nod. He then pulled out a small notebook from his pocket. “They’re on the fourth floor, apartment 4012. I got a positive ID on one Rocco Lundy. There is one other male subject with—”

“Was it Cole?” Tek asked, the surge of anticipation tingling down his spine.

“The subject was not identified. Caucasian male, five feet eleven inches, approximately one hundred eighty pounds, dark hair and beard, and has sleeve tattoos, which include a skull and crossbones, dice, and the Tasmanian Devil.”

“That’s Cole,” Tek responded with complete assuredness. He’d been about eight, maybe nine, when Cole had gotten Taz on his arm. It was the first time he’d watched someone get inked. Fuck, Jamie had been there too. Tek spun and headed for the door.

“Hey, where the hell you going?” Blake called out.

“I’m going to get Jamie,” he responded without turning around or slowing down.

At the door, his arm was grabbed, halting his movements. “What the hell, man?” he asked when he turned to face Blake. Tek jerked his arm free. “This isn’t open for discussion.”

“I’m not asking you not to go, I’m asking you to wait one second and think about the plan.”

“I know about the fucking plan, I came up with it,” Tek snapped in irritation.

“You came up with a new one you didn’t share with the rest of us? Because the last time we talked, there was no mention of you rushing over there alone with guns blazing.”

“Yeah, plans change. I’m not leaving him there a second longer.”

“I agree with Tek,” Ty offered. “I know I wouldn’t be able to wait. Plus there is more of us than there are of them.”

“Not helping, Ty,” Blake huffed.

“Sir, if I can interrupt here,” Nick interjected. “You won’t be going through the front door without announcing yourself. There is a security guard on duty. I suggest taking the service elevator they’re using to take building supplies to the apartments being renovated. It’s how I obtained access.”

“See there, Tek, those are the kind of details we need first.” Blake nodded to the bar. “Let’s go work out the minute details, find out what else Nick discovered, and then we will go get Jamie, okay?”

Tek once again found himself hesitating when everything in his body screamed to run out that fucking door, consequences be damned, and get Jamie the hell away from Rocco. It nearly overwhelmed him, his body shaking with the need to act.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Ariel Tachna here today to talk about her latest novel and talk a bit about her writing. Welcome, Ariel.  Congratulations on  At Your Service!

******

Thank you, Melanie, for hosting me today, and thanks to all your followers for taking the time to read this. In appreciation, I’ll be giving away one copy of At Your Service to someone who comments.

1. Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

Book ideas can come from anywhere. Sometimes it’s a dream (Partnership in Blood). Sometimes it’s an overheard snippet of Dance Off coverAllianceinBloodFSconversation (Dance Off). Sometimes it’s a situation I see or read about (Fallout). It might be a line from a book (The Matelot) or a movie (Under the Skin) or a song (The Inventor’s Companion), or a relationship dynamic I want to explore outside the context of that book or movie. I’ve had book ideas come from comments friends (Inherit the Sky) or readers (Cherish the Land) have made. They’ve come from places I’ve visited (Seducing C.C.), journeys I’ve taken (The Path), and people I’ve met (At Your Service). Sometimes it’s a personal experience (Home for Chirappu). In short, the inspiration comes from life. It’s up to me to be open to the world around me and to see everything as a potential source of creativity.HomeforChirappuFS

2.  Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And why?

Definitely a pantzer. The only time I’ve successfully planned books prior to writing them is when I’m working with Nicki, and even then, those plans are open for discussion as we write. I go into a story with a set of characters, a conflict (although sometimes I discover as I’m writing that the conflict I envisioned is not the real one), and an ending (happily ever after). I used to try to make more detailed outlines, but I discovered that when I do that, my stories either feel flat or I can’t finish them because the characters rebel against my preconceived notions of who they are and refuse to cooperate until I let them tell their own stories. Ultimately everyone is happier if I just let them have their way.

3.  Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?

I’ve written in pretty much every genre out there at one time or another. Except humor. I don’t do humor. As a reader, I’m most drawn to fantasy because with fantasy (or science fiction), the writer can do away with a lot of the societal norms that irk me. In fantasy, you can have a matriarchal society or an egalitarian one or one where dragons partner with humans or one where interspace travel is a question of finding someone with enough psychic ability to teleport you across the universe. You can have magic and science and any combination of aliens and cultures and languages and races. The limits of the writer’s imagination are the only limits out there. That said, doing it well is not an easy thing. There’s a lot of mediocre fantasy out there. There’s a lot of knock-off fantasy as well. I remember taking my kids to see a children’s fantasy movie a few years ago and spending the entire movie thinking, “And that’s Aragorn. And those are the Orcs. And there you have the Rohirrim.” It was Lord of the Rings all over again with names and faces changed but no real originality. Now, we can’t all be Tolkien (don’t I wish I could be as brilliant as him), but it’s easy to fall into borrowing ideas here and there instead of starting truly from scratch.

4.  If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?

I’m sure I have many characters who would be different if I started their story now rather than when I started them, but each book I’ve written is very much a product of who I was as a person and a writer at the time it was written. Even when I’ve had the opportunity to do second editions of books, I’ve chosen not to make a lot of changes in those characters, because whoever they might be if I started telling the same story now, that’s not who they are because I’m not telling that story now. I told it then in the best way I could and as true to those characters as I could. Have I progressed as a writer? Of course I have. Would the text have fewer POV changes or invalid simultaneous actions or epithets or other mistakes I’ve learned not to make if I wrote it now? Possibly. Would that make the characters in any way better? I don’t think so, because my growth as a writer is technical more than it is creative. I don’t create better characters now than I did ten years ago. Different characters, no doubt, but not better, and to try to change them is to deny who they were and who I was then.

5.  Can an author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

It’s a bit like children or students, if you’re a teacher—you’re not supposed to have favorites, but you kind of do anyway. And yes, I have them. Caine and Macklin, Orlando and Alain, and Jean and Raymond are probably my three favorites, although then I start thinking, “what about Christian and Teo?” “But I love Leandre and Perrin.” “Oh, I can’t forget about Frank and Daniel.” So yes, I have my favorites, but I also love them all.

6.  If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

That’s sort of a loaded question because I have different books for different kinds of comfort, but they would have in include The Lord of the Rings, the Sunrunner series by Melanie Rawn, the first six (at least) of the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey, Cursed and Betrayed by Rhianne Aile, and Change of Heart by Mary Calmes. That would cover most eventualities. 😉

7.  How early in your life did you begin writing?

I was twelve when I started writing. By the time I finished high school, I had five completed novels written. I’m pretty sure no one would want to read them now. They were very clearly written by a middle or high school student, but they were good practice for the art of pacing, dialogue, character creation, and more.

8.  Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

I can’t ever remember not reading. I know my mother read to me because I know my mother, but I can’t ever remember not reading along. I think the childhood book that had the most impact on me was the Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warren. I read and reread those books so many times that in second grade, I have a vivid memory of recounting the entire first book to a classmate at the end of a field trip. And I don’t mean a two-sentence summary. A little bit later, more late elementary, early middle school, it was the Dark Is Rising series by Susan Cooper. Everyone talks about Harry Potter, but Will Stanton would totally take Harry to school. (Sorry to all the Potter fans out there, but read the books before you come after me. You’ll see I’m totally right.) Susan Cooper introduced me to two of my enduring loves with those books: King Arthur and fantasy.

9.  If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be?

I’m SO bad at titles. I’m not sure you want to ask me that question. I can honestly say I have come up with the titles for a total of four of my books. For all the others, I had to throw myself on the mercy of my friends and beta readers.

About the Author

ariel bio pic

When Ariel Tachna was twelve years old, she discovered two things: the French language and romance novels. Those two loves have defined her ever since. By the time she finished high school, she’d written four novels, none of which anyone would want to read now, featuring a young woman who was—you guessed it—bilingual. That girl was everything Ariel wanted to be at age twelve and wasn’t.

She now lives on the outskirts of Houston with her husband (who also speaks French), her kids (who understand French even when they’re too lazy to speak it back), and their two dogs (who steadfastly refuse to answer any French commands).

Old Labels, Tagging and The Need to Move Forward

Something one of our reviewers said  to me this week got me thinking about labels and tagging.  She said that there was a controversy stirring about a current release and the GFY label and bisexuality, blurring/confusion between them.  She wanted to give me a head’s up.  Now I had no idea (still don’t) because I wasn’t paying any attention but it brought to mind things that have been swimming around the brain for some time now…that there are some labels that need to be put to rest.

In the book review world there are certain three letter  or  three character abbreviations we use all the time to quick label  a book.  Among some of the most widely used are M/M, D/s, HEA, HFN, and of course, GFY.   Its the later that I’m going to be blogging about on Saturday.  I think we’ve grown past that label, and now its rolled into hurtful territory.   Why not use the term pansexual (among others) where proper?  And bisexual where the character clearly loves and desires both sexes?

Not getting into it today but look for a much longer and thoughtful post on Saturday.  Join in on the discussion and let me know how you feel about tagging and labels.  I’m really curious.  Haven’t be gone past these old perceptions?  Isn’t it time we laid them to rest?  We’ve enlarged the LGBT to include LGBTQIA, lets bring the book review world along with it.

Now we’ve got a stacked  week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words, lets get to it.

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

The Taste of InkTrevor Dunn has never gone to the Calgary Stampede, in spite of living in the city all his life. He would much rather listen to music and draw comics in his basement than hang out with a bunch of cowboys. When his sister drags him to the Stampede’s opening parade anyway, Trevor is drawn to a cowboy sporting a green hat.

Charlie opens Trevor’s mind to the world of country music and country boys. But then an old flame appears in the middle of the festival and Trevor is torn. He adores Charlie, but Mathieu—a punk singer turned acoustic crooner—was Trevor’s first love, and Trevor lost him by being too afraid to chase the dreams they shared.

When the Stampede ends, Charlie will go back to Toronto, Mathieu will go back on tour, and Trevor will go back to his basement. Realizing that’s not what he wants, Trevor enters a mechanical bull-riding contest in hopes of winning the heart of his true love—or maybe both of them. This time, fear won’t stop him from going after what he wants.

When I think of cowboys, I think of the mid-west. Texas, Oklahoma, Montana. Apparently Canada has cowboys too. Who knew?

In this story we meet shy artist Trevor. His sister convinces him to go to the Calgary Stampede with her. A week of cowboys and everything cowboy related. He doesn’t want to go, but then he meets Charlie. A cowboy previously, he loves the Stampede and the men there.

They begin a hot and heavy affair- with the mutual understanding that it would only last as long as the Stampede did. But feelings begin to develop which they were not expecting. Trevor still stings from his last heart break- which he brought on himself and Charlie never saw himself in a relationship at all.

While the relationship developing was cute and the sex was super hot, this book was touted as M/M/M. Yet we don’t meet the third man until nearly the end of the book. And while Trevor and Mathieu have a history, the instant connection between Charlie and Mathieu seemed forced. After one night together all three are ready to pursue a poly relationship.

Trevor came out of his self-imposed shelf, but he came of as very meek, very submissive, being led around by the rich cowboy who bought him things and spoiled him.

A decent story, a new setting, hot sex scenes and some romance. I would have liked it more with either just Trevor and Charlie or with a lot more development of the poly relationship. But it was still an enjoyable read.

Cover art by AngstyG is gorgeous but how much of it speaks to the story?

A Stella Review: Go Tell It on the Mountains (Sugar Tree #3) by Nick Wilgus

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars    ★★★★★

Go Tell It On The MountainsYears have gone by since the death of Noah, his special needs son, and Wiley Cantrell realizes it’s time to move on. He and his husband, Jackson Ledbetter, try to adopt little Tony Gorzola, a deaf boy with HIV who is emotionally traumatized.

Difficulties quickly set in. Tony is a sweet boy but very damaged by abuse and neglect. And Tony’s mother, in prison, is unwilling to relinquish her parental rights. No sooner do they get the go ahead to foster Tony when another child they had considered becomes available—the daughter Jackson always wanted.

With two children on their hands, life is complicated—wonderfully so. But just as things begin to settle down, Tony, his immune system compromised, falls ill with pneumonia—and Wiley and Jackson find their little family faced with crisis once again.

A portion of the proceeds from this book are being donated to the Kentucky Youth Law Project (www.kylpinc.org), whose goal is to reduce homelessness and promote legal protections for LGBT youth in the state of Kentucky.

I fell in love with this author’s stories since I read Shaking the Sugar Tree, the first book in the Sugar Tree series by Nick Wilgus. Although all his books left me a mess, they are addictive and I always wanted more. If you haven’t read the series yet and you are planning to do it, please do not go on with my review, you don’t want to know what happens in the third book now.

That said, as you can read from the blurb, this story takes place years after Stones in the Road, years after the death of my beloved Noah. I can admit it was a huge shock, I wasn’t expecting the author to go where its forbidden to go. Before reading it, I thought I would have preferred a third book in this series was not written. Not because I don’t love the author’s works, just because  I would have preferred wondering about what would have happened to Noah and not actually know.   I thought for a moment I was going to skip this book cause I wouldn’t like it. But I couldn’t. I’m too much into these characters’ lives and so I had to put aside my beliefs. I appreciated the author gave me just some glimpse of the time when Noah was dying. My heart couldn’t have taken it all.

The first chapter opens with Wiley and Jackson ready to adopt a seven years old deaf boy with HIV. They already meet other children but Tony is special and Wiley knows he can be the only parent to that kid. His stubbornness and courage will lead them in a beautiful journey to a possible happiness.

And when the sweet Amelia will join their new family, the circle will be completed. The story is full of obstacles and trauma to discover and try to overcome with the only thing all these characters need, love.

I was happy to meet Wiley and Jackson again and find out Wiley is still Wiley. They are still funny together, bantering and making fun of each other, and six years after the death of Noah they are at a point in their lives where they are still recovering yes but can maybe see a family again in the future.

Let’s be honest and say I cried a lot, maybe too much; some scenes, like the ones at the cemetery, were very emotional and too hard to take. Wiley is not ready to let Noah go, he’s still hurting, grieving. I cried through all the story till the last word. And it was okay. I cried for Noah, for Wiley, for Tony, for Amelia, for all the love I breathed from the pages, for the braveness of these flawed persons.

Go Tell it on the Mountain is a beautifully written book, as always the author was able to let me feel every good and bad emotion the characters felt. That’s one of the reasons why I read his books even if they break my heart. IMO Sugar Tree is one of the best series I read so far. I have no idea if this  is going to be the last book in the series or there will be more. If it is, I will of course be sad but it’s the perfect conclusion for a series like that.

Go Tell It on the Mountains is a love story, powerful and touching. I wish I could give it two thousand stars. My words are not good enough to really express my feelings about this book and I think it’s not easy to do it. I just want to highly recommended it. Just a warning: the series is not a light one. If you’re looking for romance, you’ll find it somewhere else, but if you’re looking for love, Sugar Tree is the right place, you’ll get every shade of love to fill your heart.

The COVER ART by Anne Cain follows the style of the covers of the previous books, well done.

Young Shane gets himself in trouble again with his Dom. Afraid of Julien thinking he is insane when he believes someone is following him at the university, he makes matters worse for himself. He wants to please him, make him happy, and be the best sub for Julien.

His Dom gives him everything he needs. He helps him learn to deal with his problems the right way and not with drugs. He pays for his college and lets him work at one of his clubs to be independent and earn some of his own money.

Something or someone always seems to get in the way of their progress. This time besides the lies and rule breaking, it’s a couple of different people trying to ruin their relationship.

Julien tries to be patient with Shane. He loves him and wants to be the safe place Shane can always come home to, but misunderstandings, lies, and shortcomings threaten this couple the one thing they need more than anything else, each other.

This story is steamy hot, but it isn’t just a story of BDSM. It is a story of love with a super HEA to end the series.

Excerpt

When Shane O’Rourke’s cell phone buzzed on the end table, he straightened up against the headboard in bed to read the message. There was no question as to who was messaging him at noon. Sure enough, Julien’s leather-clad picture wallpapered his screen. Shane’s stomach constricted and his clammy hands trembled. He inhaled a deep breath to center himself. Fuck no. Julien had told him that they couldn’t meet for lunch because of some business meeting with his partner, Adam. Shane didn’t have a clue what prompted him to check up on him.

Shane hadn’t attended school the entire week. He didn’t mention it to Julien, because he was supposed to attend all of his classes according to their agreement for tuition.

Julien: “Where are you?”

Shane: “UCLA.”

Julien: “Did you take a bus?”

Shane: “My motorcycle.” Why would he ask me if I took a bus? He knows I ride my bike. It doesn’t make any sense.

Three minutes later the bedroom door busted open. Julien stood in the doorway, arms folded and glared at him. Shane knew that particular look, and it never meant anything good on the horizon. He shouldn’t have lied to Julien. He always found out, one way or another. When would he learn from his past mistakes? His father had been right; he was nothing but a liar going straight to hell.
