Take A Journey! ‘Travels Through The Scarlet Equinox’ Is Waiting for You To Explore! (author interview,blurbs and contest)

BTBanner_Travels

One of my favorite authors is here to talk about her story and involvement in the collection, ‘Travels Through The Scarlet Equinox’. Welcome, Angel Martinez!  I love the idea for this anthology and the lineup of authors and stories is just such a delight.  I see that you have brought my favorite demon Shax back, along with the Brimstone crew.

Is this the first new story for them? Or have there been other space escapades along the way?

It’s the first new story in their ongoing timeline since Shax’s War came out last April. For anyone new to the series, Shax, the Demon Prince of Thieves, and the Brimstone crew had their first adventure in Hell for the Company, followed by Fear of Frogs, then Shax’s War, in chronological order. Those first three stories all happen within a few months of each other in Shax’s timeline. We jumped back quite a few years then because Shax wanted his origin story written, which happens in the prequel, Potato Surprise, just released last summer.

So this is the first new story after the first triad. Beside a Black Tarn takes place a few months after the end of Shax’s War. While each story is a full story on its own, it’s probably best to read them in order so the introduction of new characters will make the most sense.

Why Shax and the Brimstone crew?  What draws you back to them?

Shax and his crew started out as just a lark, a humorous SF piece to balance out some of the heavy bits I was writing at the time. But he’s such a fun, bad little demon – vain, arrogant, and vulnerable all at once – that I can’t help coming back to him and asking, what’s he gotten himself into this time?

While the humor part still applies, Shax and his crew have insisted on becoming real people with quirks and hopes and fears all their own. Shax’s schemes are fun, but I think I have just as much fun with how the crew interacts with him and each other.

What was the inspiration behind the idea of a Scarlet Equinox Anthology?

Mischief Corner Books does themed anthologies every year with an eye to keeping the theme broad enough for authors’ varied styles and preferred genres. Cowboys. Science Fiction. Etc. The original thought was for a Halloween anthology, but that limited some authors, so the theme was expanded to the Autumnal Equinox and autumn.

For some of the authors, like me, fall is a favorite time of year for the weather, the holidays, the changes it brings, while for others, like our Aussie writer, Toni Griffin, fall is a wonderful, foreign concept that was fun to explore.

Can we look forward to a Winter Equinox anthology lineup too?

Last year saw the release of a Christmas/Winter anthology, Chestnuts Roasting, so it may be a bit before mischief Corner comes back around for a Winter Equinox anthology.

Thanks, Angel.  I can’t wait to start reading!

TravelsFSTITLE: Travels Through The Scarlet Equinox

AUTHOR: Toni Griffin, J. Scott Coatsworth, Angel Martinez, Freddy MacKay

COVER ARTIST: Freddy MacKay

LENGTH: 475 Pages

RELEASE DATE: November 18, 2015

BLURB: The Autumnal equinox—when the trees dress in their formal scarlet and gold and the crisp air whispers of chance and change, when bright days turn into sudden storms and the veil between reality and imagination thins. Join the Mischief Corner authors as they share stories evoking this often unpredictable time of year.

A Bear’s Bear by Toni Griffin

Matthew Warner’s been a Chicago Bears fan as far back as he can remember. What other team was a young bear shifter from the Smokey Mountains supposed to root for? When his college friend gets tickets to the next home game, Matthew jumps at the chance for a holiday. It’s his favorite time of year and Nic promises him pumpkin carving and a visit to the world’s largest corn maze, what more could he want?

What Matthew doesn’t expect is finding out the defensive tackle for the Bears is his mate. Between fainting at the realization, meeting family, and dealing with the media fallout of his mate’s coming out Matthew is in for a hell of a rocky Halloween.

The Autumn Lands by J. Scott Coatsworth

Jerrith is running. Kissed by an elf, he can’t remain in his hometown of Althos anymore. Not that he wanted to stay.

Caspian still hasn’t figured out why he kissed Jerrith, but he’s running too. Since he was exiled from the Autumn Lands, his past has been hazy, and his future uncertain. But when a stray memory brings things into focus, the two decide to run toward something together. What they uncover will change how they see the world, and themselves, forever.

Beside a Black Tarn by Angel Martinez

When Shax stumbles across rumors of an experimental house that responds to the occupant’s brain functions, creating scenarios to please and delight, naturally he wants to steal it.  But with the return of a troubled and hunted Julian Parallax and an overabundance of Poe references, even Shax’s scheming may not be enough to get the Brimstone crew out alive this time.

Eternity in the Tides by Freddy MacKay

Autumn has always been Zak’s favorite season for hiking and camping. Not to mention breathing in all that crisp fall air and sitting around toasty bonfires. That all changed year and a half ago when a rich prick high on prescription pills sideswiped Zak while he was out biking.

Now his days are filled with pain and limited mobility. No more camping. No more trails. Zak’s life as he knew it is gone forever.

Back at his beloved stomping grounds, Zak is ready to say hello and goodbye one last time. But when a cry from the frigid Lake Superior waters throws him into the role of a rescuer, more than just his life hangs in the balance. Little did Zak know how much one person giving a damn mattered to him.

A Bear’s Bear by Toni Griffin

“Take a seat,” Christian said as he closed the door behind them. The Alpha was acting strangely, especially when he checked the hall just before the door closed. Christian walked over to where Matthew was sitting. Instead of taking a seat behind the desk as Matthew would have expected, Christian hiked a leg and leaned against the edge of the desk just to the side of him.

“Thank you for taking a minute to speak with me.”

“Anything you need, Alpha.” Matthew nodded. His hands were already sweating. Matthew rubbed them back and forth on his pants, hoping to dry them.

“There’s no reason to be nervous,” Christian assured him, chuckling lightly. “You’ve done nothing wrong.”

Matthew nodded as he sighed in relief.

“I know we don’t know each other very well,” Christian started and Matthew nodded again. “However, you’ve known my younger brother for years.”

“I have. He’s a good guy.”

“He is. Can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but I love him nonetheless.” Christian chuckled.

Matthew was too nervous to do anything more than smile.

“Anyway, I happened to overhear a conversation you had earlier on the phone.”

Matthew swallowed and fisted the denim of his jeans in his hands. Would Christian stop him from going on vacation? Was there a sleuth in Chicago? Did he need to notify them of his travel plans?

“Yes?” he asked quietly.

“You’re planning to travel to Chicago, is that correct?”

Matthew nodded slowly.

“Excellent.”

Matthew furrowed his brows. Why on earth would Christian think his travel plans were excellent? “I don’t understand.”

“I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind doing me a favor.”

“A favor? Me?”

Christian nodded. “I’m trying to go through the sleuth, one by one, and get to know everyone as the Alpha. But Bobby trusts you. And I was hoping I could too.”

Trust me? To do what? Matthew went back to rubbing his hands on his pants. If he could comfortably put them in his pockets sitting down, he would have, but he couldn’t. When Matthew didn’t say anything, Christian smiled kindly at him and continued. “I have an item that I plan on purchasing that I don’t feel comfortable with the postal system handling. I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind picking it up while you’re in Chicago and bringing it back for me.”

Matthew’s mind raced. What exactly was his new Alpha into? Surely it wouldn’t be anything illegal; drugs and guns were just a couple of the things that popped into his mind. Matthew shook his head. There was no way Christian would put a member of his sleuth in danger like that, but he couldn’t help but ask.

“I won’t get into trouble for doing this, will I?”

“No.” Christian laughed. “Although if Vinnie finds out, he might have a few words to say to you.

“Vincent?” Why would Christian’s mate want to talk to him if he did this?

“The item in question is from Tiffany’s,” Christian said, raising his brow. Matthew’s eyes widened as everything suddenly made sense. Oh wow!

“Yes,” he blurted. “Yes, sure, okay, I would be honored. Anything you need.”

Christian chuckled, placed a hand on his shoulder, and squeezed.

“Thank you. You can understand why I don’t want an item such as this being posted or even couriered to me.”

“I can. I’m touched that you trust me to collect it and deliver it into your hands.”

“You’re of my sleuth. I would trust you with my life.”

Matthew’s eyes teared up at the absolute sincerity he felt from his Alpha. No one before had ever had so much faith in him.

“Thank you. I won’t let you down.”

The Autumn Lands by J. Scott Coatsworth

Jerrith Ladner ran down Dyer’s Alley in Althos, winded but not daring to stop. He swung left down Chaplain’s Lane where the lanterns cast a crazy patchwork of light across cobbles, uneven enough to give even the Night Guard pause. His lungs hurt, but he didn’t slow down and didn’t dare glance back.

The occasional passerby stared at him as he flashed past, but he ignored them. Several times he stumbled and fell, and blood dripped down his bare leg from a skinned knee. The outskirts of town were silent, with almost everyone already indoors for the night.

His recent past was a blur, with snatches of it flitting by in his head like birds, flapping and confusing him with their unsteady rhythm:

The kiss.

The unexpected shock of it.

The glimpse of the Autumn Lands through the Nevris man’s golden eyes.

At last, exhausted, Jerrith ducked behind a low wall that ran along the fields just outside of town and looked back.

It was quiet. There was nothing but blackness crisscrossed by lamplight at even intervals.

Almost sobbing, he sat down with his back to the wall and curled up into himself, scarcely noticing the pain that traced the lines of his rib cage or even the bright line of red on his leg.

Ever so slowly, his heavy breathing eased and his jumbled mind began to sort things out.

He had been walking to the Smithy in the early morning when the Nevris caravan had passed him by, six wagons of merchandise from the Autumn Lands covered with heavy tarps, crossing through town on its way to the stables on the far side of the village. A stranger had drawn his attention—an outrider for the caravan.

Tall and slender where Jerrith was stocky and muscled, he was a young man, more or less Jerrith’s own age. His blond hair had been pulled back behind his pointed ears, the mark of the Nevris. He moved with a quiet and restrained grace.

His eyes were wide and golden, and they’d met his as Jerrith crossed the town square on the way to ‘prentice to the blacksmith. The man’s gaze had filled Jerrith with something hot and impulsive, a sense of anticipation. Something that he had no name for.

Then he’d been gone.

Jerrith had spent the long, dizzying hours of work in the Smithy, hammering out heated metal into a new plowshare for Farmer Angus, the hot breath of the bellows tempered only by the cool springtime air from outside. Trying to forget those eyes.

The heat of the oven only served to fuel the heat he felt inside, until he thought he might explode.

Sent home at last well after nightfall, he’d heard a whispered voice from the dark alleyway between the Alchemist’s shop and the Rutting Crow. Jerrith had looked around to see if anyone was watching, then slipped into the alley, his heart beating faster and the bulge in his pants stiffening.

The man had kissed him hard and rough, and he’d returned the kiss passionately as the Nevris man pulled him close.

Beside a Black Tarn by Angel Martinez

“Do you have your route planned?” Shax asked Leopold as he tucked the field glasses into his jacket.

“Up the long drainpipe. On the side without windows. The master suite first.”

“That’s my boy. Remember, only what’s out in the open tonight. No looking for safes, trapdoors, or hidden rooms.”

An irritated peep followed his advice, accompanied by what Shax was beginning to recognize as a hedgehog glare. “I have it, Captain. You gave simple instructions. I am not Heckle.”

“Now, now. None of that.” Shax ran a hand through his hair to complete his artful mussing. “Heckle’s not stupid. Just… easily distracted.”

“And impetuous. And clumsy and so twitchy. Curious fingers.”

“He did apologize and has orders not to enter your burrow again. Please let it go.” Shax unfastened the first three buttons of his shirt. “Here we go, then. I’ll do the best I can to give you time, but when you hear me leaving or when I call for you, it’s time to go.”

With a last pat to Shax’s leg, Leopold dropped to all fours and scurried off through the vegetation. This would be classic accomplice distraction technique, nothing fancy. Start with the basics. He tapped in the code for the Brimstone‘s pilot pod where Ness was monitoring. “We’re going in, cupcake. Radio silence, please. I’ll yell if we need you.”

“Please be careful, my love.” Ness’s soft voice caressed his nerves.

“Easy job. Nothing to worry about.”

“You do know you’ve said that before.”

“Hush. No more. I’ll see you soon.”

He started for the front door, keeping in plain sight, dragging his right foot a bit in case anyone was watching. Tonight, Leopold was the second-story man while Shax was just the diversion.

He waited until Leopold had made it around the side of the house before he lifted the handle on the gargoyle knocker and hammered on the door. “Hello! Is anyone home? Please, please help! There’s been a terrible accident!”

A thin, terrified wail seeped through the heavy door. Shax tilted his head to listen. No, this was getting too ridiculous. A clank of chains accompanied heavy footfalls toward the door. Something on the other side let out an eerie moan. Then the door swung open on creaking hinges to reveal a dim, cobweb-festooned chandelier in a much-neglected front hall.

Oh, for all the sulfurous pits’ sakes. Shax decided to play along and performed the requisite action by calling “Hello?” at the dark and sinister interior.

He jerked back when a face suddenly popped up before him. Pale, cadaverous, sunken eyes wide, the apparition regarded him openmouthed for a single instant.

“Bells and whiskers!” the apparition whispered in obvious horror. “What in all elements are you doing out there? You’re supposed to be in here. Oh my goodness.”

A skeletal hand closed around Shax’s wrist and he blinked in confusion as he was dragged inside. “Pardon?”

“It’s really rather rude of you. If you’re going to answer the summons, you should at least do it properly.”

“I’m… sorry?”

Eternity in the Tides by Freddy MacKay

Crimson,  hot  pink,  burnt  orange,  and  a  dark  purple  lit  the  sky  and splashed  over  the  calm  waters  of  Lake  Superior.  Dusk  had  fallen  in  all  its beauty,  gracing  Zak  with  the  perfect  moment  at  his  favorite  stomping grounds.  If  he  had  to  go,  and  well…  yeah,  he  couldn’t  ask  for  anything better than this.  Tonight  was  the  night. Had to be.

Water  lapped  at  the  boat,  rocking  it  gently.  A  breeze  wafted  over  Zak. He  shivered,  then  hugged  himself  as  he  looked  over  the  lake,  back  at Madeline  Island.  Like  each  night  over  the  past  few  days,  a  pang  of  longing hit  him.  Zak  had  said  his  goodbyes,  accepted  the  fate  handed  to  him,  knew better  than  to  hold  on  to  dreams  he  could  never  have.  He  should  have  been able  to take  the  next  step.

But  he  couldn’t.

Each  night  he  rowed  back  to  his  rental  cabin,  Quiet  Bequest,  in  defeat. What  the  hell  he  held  on  for,  Zak  didn’t  have  a  clue.  His  heart  thumped heavily,  his  palms  slipped  over  the  oars,  and  the  hair  on  his  arms  stood  up —goose  bumps  everywhere—as  if something big were  about  to happen.

Well,  yeah,  something  huge  if  Zak  could  get  his  head  on  straight.  Well, maybe  not  straight—his  plan  was  utter  ridiculousness  to  the  outside observer. Made  sense  to him, though. But  then it  would.

Anticipation  rode  Zak  hard.  He  knew  what  he  had  to  do.  Planned  it. Came  determined.  This  trip,  the  two-week  cabin  retreat  he  could  never afford,  the  rowboat—my  accident—had  been  in  the  works  for  months.  And now… now  Zak cowered in his  waterlogged rowboat.

About J. Scott Coatsworth

Scott is the admin for the Queer Sci Fi site. He has been writing since ele- mentary school, when he and won a University of Arizona writing contest in 4th grade for his first sci fi story (with illustrations!). He finished his first novel in his mid twenties, but after seeing it rejected by ten publishers, he gave up on writing for a while.

Over the ensuing years, he came back to it periodically, but it never stuck. Then one day, he was complaining to Mark, his husband, about how he had been derailed yet again by the death of a family member, and Mark said to him “the only one stopping you from writing is you.”

Since then, Scott has gone back to writing in a big way, finishing more than a dozen short stories—some new, some that he had started years be- fore—and seeing his first sale. He’s embarking on a new trilogy, and also runs QSF, a support group for writers of gay sci fi, fantasy, and supernatu- ral fiction.

A Free Dreamer New Adult Review: You Promised Me Two Years by Angela Yseult

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

You Promised Me Two Years coverWhen Tyler became Connor’s interpreter, he thought all that entailed was translating the Prophet’s cryptic messages about future events.

However, it doesn’t take him long to realize Connor needs more than that. First and foremost, he needs a friend, someone who will stand up for him at the Academy, the elite school they both attend and where Connor, despite his talent, is far from popular. He also needs someone who understands that, for him, the talent of prophecy is a curse he would get rid of if he only could, a curse that pushes him toward substance abuse and oblivion.

It also doesn’t take Tyler very long before he starts seeing Connor as more than a friend, and he’s lucky enough to have Connor return his feelings. Just as things begin to settle down, however, the arrival of a new Prophet at the Academy threatens Connor’s hard-won and still-fragile peace of mind.

Through it all, Tyler is all too aware that every day brings Connor closer to being eighteen, the age of his prophesied death, two years after their first meeting.

I didn’t even finish reading the blurb before I knew I just HAD TO have “You Promised Me Two Years by Angela Yseult”. I love unusual fantasy books and this sounded too good to pass up. And I wasn’t disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed every word of this book.

Connor is a Prophet. He has visions of the future but needs an interpreter to translate for him. He speaks English, but not in a way most people understand. To most people, he’s talking nonsense. Only special people, so-called interpreters, can understand the real meaning behind the “nonsense”.

Tyler is one of those special people and he’s chosen to be Connor’s interpreter. Connor’s very first prophecy is his own death. Two years from now, he’ll die, with Tyler by his side.

I immediately fell in love with both MCs, even though Connor’s a bit difficult in the beginning. Neither of them is perfect. I loved that neither of them was perfect. Connor has a habit of stubborn sulking and Tyler gives in too easily, just to make Connor happy. Connor is a bit of a genius, both in science and with the violin, but his flaws made him incredibly likeable all the same. Some of my favourite scenes were definitely Connor playing the violin for Tyler.

Their love story was so wonderful. It was very easy to understand their feelings for each other. There was no major relationship angst. Sure, they did have some misunderstandings but they always worked it out eventually. The complications definitely weren’t the focus of the relationship. Most of the time they spent together on page as a couple was incredibly loving and trusting. Connor finds ways to express his feelings without words and Tyler learns to interpret the smallest sounds Connor makes.

But just when I was sitting there, all happy, with a dopey smile on my face, I got a reminder that this relationship couldn’t last, that time was short. It was heartbreaking to watch Connor’s struggle with his life as a Prophet. Being a Prophet comes with certain expectations that he often didn’t accept, making his life a lot harder and making my heart break for him over and over again. It was so easy to relate to Tyler’s frustration at his inability to really make a difference for Connor.

But there is so much more to this book than the simple love story. There’s the sudden appearance of another Prophet, who seems hell-bent on discrediting Connor’s abilities. Connor and Tyler both have their troubles with their families and Connor’s death is looming over all of it, of course.

I loved the setting. It’s very unusual and the author definitely has a great imagination. She obviously put a lot of work into essentially creating a new language for Connor.

By now you’re probably wondering why I knocked off half a star. Well, once again I missed the world building. The basics were covered pretty well, but I would have loved more, especially because this is such an unusual premise. A little more in-depth world building and this book would have been perfect.

To sum it up, “You Promised Me Two Years” is a bittersweet love story, with plenty of plot outside the romance, lovable protagonists and an intriguing fantasy setting. I just wish the author had explained even more about the fantasy aspects. I’d love to read another book set in this world and I’ll definitely take a look at the author’s other works.

I agree with the blurb that this works best for “mature young adults”. Some of the themes might be disturbing if you’re too young.

The cover by Jonathan Chong is absolutely gorgeous. It looks so very magical and catches the feeling of the book perfectly. Great eye catcher and one of the most beautiful covers I’ve seen in a while.

A BJ Review: The Sacrifice and Other Stories by Kim Fielding

Rating:  5 stars out of 5     ★★★★★

The Sacrifice and Other Stories by Kim FieldingA sickly man seeks recovery in a seaside cottage.
A temple slave tends a man due to be sacrificed.
A soldier releases a genie.

In seven fantasy short stories and novellas, men find passion with other men in the most unexpected places, and even the gravest circumstances may open the door to hope and love.

This anthology includes two brand-new short stories. In “The Sacrifice,” Rylo is a temple slave tasked with comforting a man who is scheduled to be killed in the morning. In “Chasing Away Cold,” Daku builds an ice sculpture of the god Jarli in order to ensure the end of winter. The collection also includes three novellas and two additional short stories, gathered for the first time in a single volume. “Treasure” introduces Jules, a young man who travels to the quirky seaside town of Urchin Cove to regain his health—and finds an unexpected treasure washed up on the beach. Xolani, a soldier in “Three Wishes,” picks up a small glass bottle and unleashes a surprise. Another soldier, Volos in “Guarded,” will risk everything to save Prince Berhanu. In the sequel, “Mato’s Tale,” an unassuming innkeeper gets a chance for adventure. And in “The Downs,” Enitan is unjustly banished and comes to discover that the demons he must face aren’t the ones he expected.

Join Kim Fielding on journeys through imagined worlds where magic is commonplace and romance lies just around the next bend. All royalties from the sale of this book will be donated to Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontiers.

The Sacrifice – 5 stars

New for this anthology, and oh boy, does it ever kick this anthology off right! This is a lovely dark little gem of just the sort that originally brought this author to my attention. Rylo is a temple slave sold by his own parents. He’s chosen to give comfort to a soldier who’s scheduled to be sacrificed the following morning. The story grabbed me from the first paragraph and reeled me in. I loved it for several reasons. First off, I’m a sucker for long-haired, broken, or scarred guys and it delivered gave me that! Not only that, but in such a short number of pages, the author made me care deeply for both of these guys. I adored the dynamic between these two, the switch up between them given their sizes and role in the story. A most excellent short story that despite a very satisfying ending, still left me wanting more of these two. I will cross my fingers.

Treasure – 4.5 stars

This was previously released and written for the DRitC event in 2013. It’d been on my TBR list for a while, but I’d not gotten to it until now. I’m glad I finally did. Sickly, book-loving Julian comes to the small town of Urchin Cover for a holiday, sent by his family who hopes the sea air will improve his health. He finds that, but also so much more when a storm washes handsome Kit Archer up on his private beach. This one is like a romantic swashbuckling fairy tale adventure! There’s dragons, pirates, imps, sprites, and magic. There’s hurt/comfort, sweet that will make your teeth ache, hot sexy bits, suspense and action. It has al that and more. It didn’t drag me in quite as fast as the previous story, and there is a much slower build between the two MC, which some may actually prefer. Overall, a heartwarming story that left me feeling good.

Three Wishes – 5 stars

After soldier Xolani accidently kicks an old bottle on patrol, picks it up and rubs it to remove the dirt, a genie emerges with three wishes to grant. But wishes granted do come with a price. I won’t reveal much more about this story, as you really should experience it for yourself. It’s quite short, but it’s perfect, too. Touching and sweet and full of hope… an exquisite little story.

Guarded – 5 stars

This was previously released and written for the DRitC event in 2014. I’d already read it when it came out, but re-read to refresh my memory since it’s been over a year. Originally rated it as 4.5 stars but I enjoyed it even more the second time around so I’m bumping that up. This is another dark one, and those are my favorite kind it seems. Prince Berhanu shuns guard Volos because of his Kozari blood, but its Volos who comes for him when he captured by the enemy. This story has some brutal parts, and those who have rape triggers should beware. A story with so many of the elements I love: long-hair, hurt/comfort, UST, hot sex, sweet bits, a harsh past, and much more. The prince’s ordeal was hard to read but this story show love’s healing power.

Mato’s Tale – 3.5 stars

This is the sequel to Guarded in which we get to see more of Mato, the lonely but brave innkeeper that assisted Vollos and Berhanu. This was released as a freebie some time ago but I hadn’t yet got around to reading it. While I didn’t really connect very much to the couple in this, I was glad to see Mato and his mother both find their someone special and for Mato get his adventure. Also pleased to find out that Volos and Berhanu were to wed. All around a bunch of lovely HEAs.

The Downs – 4 stars

A dark fairy tale set in a fascinating dystopian world where those convicted of a crime are taken from the city, across the Reach and pitched over a cliff into the Downs where they are told they are being given to the demons for their pleasure.

Entian, a criminal who has been wrongly judged wakes to find himself in the tender care of a scarred giant named Rig. Both of the main characters were intriguing, and their backstories are very developed for a story of this length.This story had many elements I enjoy: dark, dystopian, hurt/comfort, scarred/broken characters, and a sweet love story. This one isn’t only a romance, but a fable-like tale of betrayal, second chances, and vengeance. Little truths sneak out from its pages.

Chasing Away Cold – 5 stars

New in this anthology. Daku creates an ice sculpture of the god Jarli which his tribe will sacrifice in order to ensure the end of winter. Oh my, what a perfect little parable. Had the tears falling down my cheeks as I read. Am I an emotional sap? Maybe, when reading Kim Fielding. Sigh. What’s the magic more powerful than Gods… love, courage… and what this says to me, hope. This is a perfect little gem of a story, and just the right ending for this anthology.

If I figure out the exact stars for this anthology based on the numbers, it comes to something around 4.57. But I’m giving it a big, firm five stars, because very rarely have I ever enjoyed an anthology so completely. Each story is a gem for different reasons, but together they are an impeccable whole.

COVER: I really admire drawn covers done specifically for a story, and this cover captures the feeling of the first story, The Sacrifice, perfectly. Love the dark in the background to the portrayal of Rylo with his attire and tattoo, and long hair, which always, always grabs my attention. But also that outstretched hand that invites the sacrifice in for his last night of pleasure but at the same time invites us readers in to join them. Worked for me!

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Kim Fielding here today to talk about her latest short story collection and the charity that she is donating the all the proceeds of the sales of this special fantasy anthology.  Welcome, Kim, please tell us more about this collection of stories  and your connection to this charity.

~

Hi, I’m Kim Fielding. I’m not a doctor. I don’t even play one on TV. My healing abilities are limited to Band-Aids, ibuprofen, and Neosporin. So although I really want to help my favorite charity, Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontiers, I can’t very well go jetting off to provide medical services to people badly in need of them.

In case you’re unfamiliar with them, DWB is a nonprofit organization that provides medical care around the world. They go to places where people are suffering from conflict, disasters, epidemics, or extreme poverty. They’re independent and politically neutral. Basically, they provide critical, life-saving services to the people who need them most. You can read more about their work here.

Several years ago, I cast about for a way to help DWB. I came up with the idea of donating all the royalties from my self-published books to them. This has amounted to several thousand dollars per year—much more than I could have managed without my readers’ support.

This year I decided to do something special as a fundraiser. I’ve gathered together three of my fantasy novellas and two short stories, then added two brand new shorts. I’ve packaged them together in one volume with a beautiful cover by Catherine Dair. And I’m donating all the royalties. The book is called The Sacrifice and Other Stories.

The novellas in this collection have already received lots of rave reviews, and I think that having everything in one volume may be handy for those who’d like to reread. Maybe some of these stories are new to you. Plus I got to write two brand-new stories that had been bouncing around in my head. One of them is about a temple slave who has the job of giving human sacrifices one last good day. The other is set in prehistoric times (I promise, no T-rexes) and tells the story of a man who must sculpt a god out of ice in order to save his tribe. I really enjoyed writing them.

The book is available in Kindle and print editions. You can indulge yourself, but it would also make a wonderful gift for your romance-reading friends. And you’ll be helping a truly deserving organization.

About the Author

Kim Fielding is the bestselling author of numerous m/m romance novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in 15th century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, housekeepers, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.

After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there with her husband, her two daughters, and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.

Excerpt (from “Chasing Away Cold”)

She knelt, scooped a handful of snow, and stood to hold it before her. “This is nothing special—simply water that has frozen and melted and frozen again. But sometimes something very important may come from nothing at all. It depends on the heart of the maker.” She dropped the snow and pressed her hand against Daku’s chest. “The contents of a heart can change everything.”
Although he didn’t understand, he nodded. Then he gave her the cup and turned to complete the ice man.
He took particular care over the face: a narrow chin and broad cheekbones, far-set eyes with a slight downward tilt at the outside, a strong nose, and lips stretched in a wide smile. The ice man’s hair was straight, falling well below his shoulders.
“You’ve made him beautiful,” Yalamay said. Daku couldn’t say whether she’d gone and returned or had been standing there the entire time.
“He is beautiful. I only… I only tried to show that.”
Yalamay nodded as if this made perfect sense. “I knew you were the right one for this.”
Aside from Daku’s mother, people rarely praised him, and Yalamay was always sparing with her commendations. Daku should have preened under her rare words. But he was too preoccupied with what he had created. The ice man looked so real, so joyful. And in a few short hours he would be destroyed.
Daku swallowed with difficulty, but he managed a small smile when Yalamay patted his back. “Thank you for letting me do this,” he said.
“I won’t always be here, my boy. And none in the tribe but you could make Jarli so well.”
“Don’t go!” Daku cried, as if she could somehow stop death.
She chuckled. “I am pleased to be appreciated. But Daku, everything changes eventually. Winter becomes spring becomes summer becomes autumn becomes winter. Youngsters grow old and babies are born. Even hard stone is worn away”—she gestured at the rock on which the ice man stood—“but new plants grow.” She gestured toward the forest. “Someday this world will see changes that are so far beyond the tribe’s dreaming. But a few things remain unaltered. Do you know what those things are?”
“The gods?”
Her laughter startled a nearby crow from its branch. “Oh no, my boy. Gods and goddesses change too. More slowly than humans, perhaps, but no less inevitably. But the world contains magics even more powerful than gods, and the strength of those magics never changes. What are they?”
At first his mind was as blank as a fresh layer of snow. But Yalamay looked at him expectantly, and Daku remembered the conversation he’d had with his mother earlier in the day. “Love and courage.”
“Very good! There are others too, but I think those are an excellent start.”

A Barb, A Zany Old Lady Review:Driven Snow (The Pennymaker Tales #2) by Tara Lain

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Driven Snow coverAnother fairy tale for grownups featuring the elfin Mr Pennymaker who returns in this one dressed just as flamboyantly as the last time.

First and foremost, this must be treated as a fairytale, otherwise much of what happens will not make sense. There’s no logic here, just magically occurring coincidences and happy endings.

Snowden “Snow” Reynaldi is a physics major at NorCal. He’s also a world champion master at chess and is set to compete in a world championship in several weeks. When Riley Prince, gorgeous, blond and built, and star quarterback for the football team needs a tutor, Snow volunteers to help. All other attempts at teaching him have failed, yet Snow knows that Riley is capable of learning—after all, Snow has seen him apply the principles of quantum physics while quarterbacking a game, so it might just be a matter of how he’s taught.

Snow’s tutoring works, and when Riley outs himself to Snow and tells him how much he admires not only his beauty, but his brains, Snow is astounded. The two begin a relationship, and Riley decides he’s going to come out to his football team so that he can take Snow to the Homecoming Dance. In the meantime, Snow’s chess coach, Professor Kingsley, has fallen head-over-heels for a woman who scares Snow. She’s beautiful and smart, but strikes Snow as being devious and deceptive, and when the professor becomes ill and is hospitalized, Snow sets out to find out why.

There’s much intrigue in this story, including Snow’s bare miss from being killed and his heartbreaking loss of Riley’s love and support due to a deception manufactured by Kingsley’s fiancé, Anitra. I kept wondering what the poor guy would have to face next, but little did I know even greater disaster was awaiting him.

I enjoyed this story despite how crazy unbelievable it was, mostly because of the characters and their (sometimes loose) parallel to the original tale. The group who were my favorite characters were the seven frat brothers who saved Snow’s life and then later helped Mr. Pennymaker prepare him for his chess tournament. And, of course, Mr. Pennymaker was as wild and crazy and adorably elfin as he was in the previous story, Sinders and Ash. Add to that, Riley’s landlady Mrs. Wishus, and the nasty witch-like character of Anitra and we have a host of well-known characters come to life in 2015.

I remember watching a show called Fractured Fairytales with my kids, and that’s the best term I can think of to describe this story. It’s loosely based on a fairytale and is complex and sweet and crazy at times but ultimately leads to Snow and his prince getting their happily ever after.

~~~~~
Cover Art by Reese Dante depicts a beautiful young man with short, curly dark-brown hair, a slender build and a startled expression. He’s the perfect depiction of Snow.
I am thankful for all the wonderful reviewers that have come to read and review here at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words, and we have gained quite a few this year.  Our perspectives on books have grown, we’ve brought in more authors and countries.  My own TBR list now resembles something like Santa’s…long and winding because of all the new books and authors our reviewers have brought to my attention and hopefully yours.
We’ve brought new original blogs online.  Paul’s Paranormal Portfolio and Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Word’s Author Discovery, YA Saturday, M/M First Line Quizzes, whatever comes to mind, our group of reviewers seem to chime in with great ideas and new possibilities for our blog.  I love that!  And yes, grow we will (channeling my inner Yoda).
To my Reviewers! Thank you in no particular order, Barb the Zany Old Lady, Sammy, Paul B, BJ, Mika, Stella, F. D., Jeri, Wynter, Ali, and Aurora.  To totally embarrass you all.  Wild things! You make my heart sing, you make everything groovy..and this blog wouldn’t work without you all and your wonderful contributions.  Mwah!
To Our Readers! I’m thankful for all you readers who follow us on here, on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and wherever else we land.  We love our books, its why we write our reviews. We write them for our readers, for you. So please keep your comments coming.  We love to hear them.  And if you think there is a author out there for us, suggest them to us too!
Whew!  Like those Academy  Awards, I think I hear the music and its telling me to stop now, pleases stop!  Almost done.
Last Saturday, we started our November M/M First Line Quiz.  You have 1 more week to find the answers and send them in if you want to win the prize.  Get going!  Here is the link.
Everyone who celebrates have a safe and happy Thanksgiving in the United States and for all the expats abroad.
Excerpt
I glanced at Aishe to see he had his bow, an arrow nocked, and quiver at his side. He was crouched, still looking ill, but his eyes were hard and flat. I grinned in pride. Nothing could keep my mate down. I let the wind die and the ship slowed, rocking violently, the water lapping hard at its sides. The tentacles caught up and tried to wrap around the ship once again. I didn’t risk fire, but I had another element that was aplenty around me: water. Just as I gathered focus for the next spell, a tentacle tried to slither onto the deck, heading toward me. Before I could react Aishe shot an arrow, puncturing the slimy flesh of the tentacle. Then he ran and leapt over it, and with his sword, sliced off the tip. The tentacle shot back into the water, and the monster bellowed in pain. Aishe spun around, nocking another arrow. He was now close to me, and I could see it was a struggle for him to remain focused. He was sweating profusely and deathly pale. I would have ordered him below deck if I thought he would listen.
More tentacles were now slithering around the ship and the crew did what they could, cutting at the appendages and shooting their own arrows. They gave me the time I needed. I ran across the deck and realized the monster’s tentacles seemed to be following me. I wasn’t surprised, since most creatures could sense magick and many predators were attracted to it. If a predator ate a mage, they sometimes gained the power of their food: you are what you eat. I could use that to my advantage.
I reached the other side of the ship and flung my hand down with another word, using the magick in the water—every element had magick, instilled there by the Mother—and used it to freeze the water. But not just on the surface, I made the ice sink below where the beast rested. I continued the spell, causing the tentacles to freeze. It wasn’t easy to freeze saltwater but as I was using the magick within the element, and not my own to control it, it was much easier. Once the tentacles stopped moving, I instantly swung around and used the wind again to get the ship to move. We shot across the water once more, and I happened to look back to see what the beast was doing. We hadn’t gone very far before the ice broke. I realized the beast was far bigger, and stronger, than I’d suspected. I watched, fascinated and terrified, as the beast surged completely to the surface. Its bulbous head and gaping mouth appeared, its tentacles writhing in rage. Those black, pitiless eyes focused on us, and then the monster dove back into the water. It sped toward us, creating a hump in the water.
I took a deep breath, reaching a decision. It wasn’t going to stop, not until it had eaten me and destroyed the ship. I stopped the wind.
“Everyone hold onto something!” I bellowed. I glanced at Aishe as he clung to the rail, his eyes huge and locked on me.
I stood in the middle of the ship again and closed my eyes. My magick flashed hot inside me, and I used it to once again grab hold of the water’s magick. I clenched my fists and let the foreign magick fill me, feeling the pressure of it, the fluidness of the water, the refreshing and cool sensation. Then I opened my eyes and quickly grabbed a crystal from one of my pouches. It was small but it would serve for the task I gave it. I clasped the crystal between both hands and unleashed the spell with a focused word inside my mind. The spell latched onto the crystal and just as the beast reached us, intent on smashing the ship to pieces, the water suddenly shot upward, like a reverse waterfall.
A large column of water lifted the ship out of harm’s way and the tentacles of the beast slashed at the column as it roared in frustration. I made sure the ship reached a good height before locking the spell into the crystal. Spells only lasted if there was enough energy, or rather, magick, to sustain them. With crystals, I could hold the spell longer by pumping a predetermined amount of magick into them, turning the spell into an enchantment. I used such techniques for Geheimnis. I frequently had to recharge the crystals but it meant I didn’t have to consciously think about the spells anymore. They were very nearly freestanding. I used the same concept here but of a shorter extent. What I had planned wouldn’t take very long.
I ran to Aishe and pushed the crystal into his hands. “Hold onto this. It will keep you all airborne.”
“What are you doing?” Aishe made to grab me, but I had already leapt onto the rail, struggling to keep my balance.
“I’ll be right back,” I said.
“Morgorth—”
I took a deep breath before I dove off the rail. I locked my hands over my head and made sure my magick was bubbling right below the surface. The beast rose out of the water and opened its mouth. This was going to hurt.
A Paul B Review: Stranger in the Wizard’s Tower by Deric McNish
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Stranger in the Wizards TowerIn the land of Lanoran, wizards are beloved by the populace but feared by a warrior race called the Kou G’en.  Though they have a seat on the ruling council that is dominated by the wizards, the Kou G’en mistrust magic users.  A recent Earth college graduate is transported to this world and now must find a way to get back home.
Dustin started his trip to visit friends in upstate New York when he stops at an adult arcade.  While in one of the booths, he feels something caress him through what seems to be the Plexiglas separator between booths.  When he investigates, he pushes his way through the portal and lands in a dark room in what turns out to be another universe.
Athin is the apprentice to master wizard Arconduil.  While the master wizard thinks his young apprentice has a lot of potential, he thinks the boy is not concentrating on his studies.  While another apprentice, Mir, is visiting, they find a stranger in Arconduil’s castle.  Athin decides to help the young man find a way home, as he is responsible for bringing Dustin to Lanoran.  However, the master wizard has sealed the portal that Dustin used and they must find a new portal to get him back.
Rumors of another portal lead Arconduil to search for it before the Kou G’en can get to it.  What they do not know is that the military of the United States has already found this portal and has been exploring this new world.  With three competing forces trying to control the route between worlds, will Dustin ever make it back to New York?  Will he want to after spending his time with Athin?
I found this to be a very enjoyable read,  Deric McNish, an actor and professor of theater at Michigan State University, has crafted a book that could easily be turned into a screenplay.   None of the three major groups trust the other and it soon becomes an enemy of my enemy is my friend type situation.  The author has also set up possible sequels with both the ending of the book and also the epilogue.
The cover art by Damonza shows silhouettes of Dustin and Athin above the Lanoran marsh like setting.  There is a dragon flying between the silhouetted figures.  It is a decent cover but with “Wizard’s Tower” in the title, one might have expected the tower or castle in the cover.
A Free Dreamer Review: Minotaur by J.A. Rock
Rating: 1.5 stars out of 5
Minotaur_600x900Know this: I am not a warrior. I am a disease.
When I was six, my parents died.
When I was sixteen, I was locked away in Rock Point Girls’ Home. Nobody wants to deal with a liar. An addict. A thief.
Nobody except Alle. She is pure, and she’s my friend in spite of all the rotten things I am.
There was once another girl like me—long ago. A cast-off daughter. A lying little beast who left a red stain across the land with her terrible magic. She’s imprisoned now in a maze high up on the cliffs. They say she’s half woman, half bull. They say she dines on human tributes and guards a vast treasure. They say she was born wicked.
But I know her better than the history books or stories do. She and I dream together. Our destinies are twisted up like vines.
Except I’m not going to turn out wicked like she is. I can save myself by destroying her. I’m going to break out of this place, and I’m going to enter the labyrinth and take her heart.
And once I’m redeemed, maybe Alle will love me.
This is the first F/F book I’ve ever read, so when asked if I was interested, I wasn’t sure at first. But I really liked “When All the World Sleeps” by J.A. Rock and Lisa Henry, so I figured I might as well give it a try.
The reason why I really didn’t like this book isn’t that it’s F/F, I didn’t mind that part, though it probably isn’t really for me. No, it was the character of Thera.  I couldn’t stand Thera from the start. She’s not an evil woman, or even dangerous. She’s just an angry, whiny teenager, who hates the world. She’s selfish, incredibly annoying and not exactly the brightest out there. She goes off to slay a monster and doesn’t even think about bringing a weapon till it’s too late? Seriously? She lies for absolutely no reason whatsoever, even to Alle, who she’s oh-so-in-love with. Something I didn’t buy, by the way. When Alle doesn’t behave the way Thera wants her to, she’s furious and throws a temper tantrum. And as soon as she gets the opportunity, she cheats on her. What kind of love is that supposed to be?
Then there’s the world building, which was essentially non-existent. It felt like America in the 50s or 60s, except that the girls all wear pants and sweaters. And there’s magic and curses and a monster, of course. Which is the extent of world building we get here. I still don’t know whether this is the only town with magic and such, or if it’s commonplace all over the world. I still don’t know just how the magic works. Or is there even magic at all? I’m not sure. For heaven’s sake: Dear authors all over the world, if you’re going to write FANTASY, PLEASE DO SOME WORLD BUILDING. Seriously, that’s a major pet peeve of mine. And no, it’s absolutely no excuse that this was supposed to focus on the romance. You can do both, romance AND world building.
Apart from the protagonist, who I couldn’t stand, and the world building, which didn’t exist, very, very little happened during the first 60% or so. Then the plot finally started to pick up and was somewhat interesting for about 10%. Then it all went downhill again and I was just fed up with everything. I even skimmed the last 5% or so, since it just wouldn’t end, although there really wasn’t anything left to tell. So, essentially there wasn’t much of a plot here either.
In short, I did not like this book. At all. The protagonist was irritating beyond words, there was absolutely no world building, the romance wasn’t convincing in the least and very little actually happened for more than half of the book. The half star I added is for the basic plot idea, which did sound interesting, and the 10% of somewhat interesting plot
The cover by Imaliea is the best part of this book. It’s what first caught my eye. Though in hindsight, I have no idea why Thera is carrying a sword here.
