About If I Ever

Some ghosts refuse to stay buried . . .

Prophet and Tom have been through the wringer more times than they can count, both as partners in the field and in life. Yet despite it all, they’ve built something great together. But now they need to protect it again: Prophet’s old nemesis, John Morse, is back and threatening everything he loves.

Prophet is driven enough to take John down alone, and with a chance to do exactly that on the table, he runs with it, risking himself in the process. But trusting Tom to help him is so much more than mission critical.

It’s the final stand, and with Tom and his team behind him, Prophet’s in for the fight of his life. Then a figure from his past goes missing, and the consequence of an old mission rears its head. As complications and destruction mount all around them, getting out alive becomes the most important mission of their lives.

An Ashlez Review: I Wished For You by Colette Davison

Rating: 3 stars out of 5
Three wishes.

Seb wants to be happy.
Matt wants to find ‘the one.’
Connor wants them.

Two drunken kisses.

Seb didn’t plan to kiss Matt and Connor, but he doesn’t regret it, even if it has changed their friendship forever.

Matt has never considered dating a man before, let alone two. Despite his confusion, being with Seb and Connor feels right.

One uncertain future.

Connor’s potential fate has stopped him living and loving. Can he face his fears to be with the men he loves?

First of all this was a “slow burn/fast burn” book.  I felt like it was taking ages to get anywhere between the characters, and there was too much inner strife between each except Seb, I do think Seb is my absolute favourite.
Seb – sure of himself, knows what he wants, going through a bit of a time in the beginning but quickly realizes things can be better – and he’s so darn funny and adorable I just wanna pinch him
Matt – a mans man I’d say, he’s very sure of himself once he gets going but in the first he honestly acts the most girly to me
Connor – here’s the quiet one of the bunch, given his job I’d think he was more manly and outgoing but honestly he’s more of a read a book in front of a fire type to me, and really frustrating to read all his woes .. I’m sorry but he got whiny for me and I just wanted his parts to be over

I first got really into the book and wished for more, then when more happened I kind of got bored, the writing was a bit repetitive for me, though still their relationship as it progressed was interesting (except Connor) I have never read a book like this maybe that’s why I struggled a bit more than I should have .. it was overall a great MMM read and i’d read it again just for some Seb.

Cover – very apt, and I felt very accurate

An Ashlez Release Day Review: The Princess of Baker Street by Mia Kerick

Rating : 5 stars out of 5

When she was a child, Joey Kinkaid, assigned as a boy at birth—wearing Mom’s purple sundress and an imaginary crown—ruled the Baker Street neighborhood with a flair and imagination that kept the other kids captivated. Day after day, she led them on fantastic after-school adventures, but those innocent childhood days are over, and the magic is gone. The princess is alone.

Even Eric Sinclair, the Prince Eric to Joey’s Princess Ariel, has turned his back on his former friend, watching in silence as Joey is tormented at school. Eric isn’t proud of it, but their enchanted youth is over, and they’ve been thrust into a dog-eat-dog world where those who conform survive and those who don’t… well, they don’t. Eric has enough to deal with at home, where his mother has abandoned him to live in isolation and poverty.

But Eric can’t stay on the sidelines forever. When Joey finally accepts her female gender and comes to school wearing lip gloss, leggings, and a silky pink scarf, the bullies readily take the opportunity she hands them, driving Joey to attempt suicide and leaving Eric at a crossroads—one that will influence both their lives in not just the present, but the future.

Is there a chance the two teens can be friends again, and maybe even more?

I adored this book, I had never read anything like this prior to jumping in and it was so well worth it.  It’s definitely YA and nothing steamy happens but it was written with such heartache and feeling I just couldn’t put it down.
Joey – finding themselves throughout the whole book (most of it anyway) and it’s equally heartbreaking and eye opening to read – book smart and just trying to survive
Eric – bad luck of that draw, I was surprised how life turned out for him honestly it’s unreal what he went through within the book only to come out the way that he did, I felt bad for the inner turmoil of sticking up for someone/being made fun of yourself.

High school is hard, bullies are jerks, life gets better.. those are the takeaways from this book and 100% recommend people read it especially if you have someone going through a gender crisis, etc. it’s so well written and amazing.

An Alisa Review: At Home (Finding Home #1) by Carly Marie

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

As the lead vocalist for country music’s hottest band, Derek Edwards knows that coming out as gay could mean the end of his career. With his life in the spotlight and too much on the line, Derek won’t let himself think about finding a boyfriend, much less the Daddy he desperately desires.

Sheriff Colt Westfield has better things to do than following Hollywood heartthrobs or the latest singing sensations. So when one drink turns into a mind-blowing one-night stand, he has no idea who he was with. That is, until he’s dragged to a concert and sees his sexy one night stand strutting around on stage.

With a record label, management team, and fans watching, will they be able to find what they both need?

I do love me some kinky stuff, especially age play and this book hit the spot.  Derek and Colt hit it off right off the bat and are so great together.

Derek has been struggling since coming out to his family and his father’s distance since and the record label’s demand that he stay in the closet.  It’s been a long time since Colt has had a boy to take care of and he jumps in with both feet from the beginning.

It was easy to connect with these characters and great to see the story from both of their view points.  I loved how their needs complemented each other and how much support Colt was to Derek when he needed it.  I felt for Derek when the stress and schedule was overwhelming him but it was amazing how just one day of letting it all go helped him to center and be ready to face the problems the next day, we all have something that does it but Colt did it for him.  It was also heartwarming that Colt was able to help Derek’s father clear the air and get their relationship back on track.

I look forward to more of these books and can’t wait to see what other kinks the author brings out.

The cover art by Soxational Cover Art is great and I think it is perfect for the story.

A MelanieM Review: One-On-One (Cayuga Cougars #5) by V.L. Locey

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

The past few years have been a bit chaotic for Cougars new associate coach, Lancaster Hart. After an amiable divorce he began living his life as the gay man he’d kept closeted for far too long. With the recent move to Cayuga, he’s away from his support system and properly made sweet tea. Despite a roster filled with new friends and associates, he’s spending his nights alone.

As his team gears up to make a run at the Calder Cup, Lancaster discovers that not everything in upstate New York is wine, woodlands, and chilly conservative ideals. At a summer music festival, he first lays eyes on Townsend Harris, folksy/blues singer by night and mayoral office assistant by day. Lancaster is enraptured with the man’s powerful sultry voice. Also, Town just might be the most beautiful man he has seen in all his forty-one years.

The two hit it off at an informal meet and greet after the show, where they spend the night talking and sipping wine. One evening of conversation and an incendiary goodbye kiss leads them into a scorching love affair that might be exactly what Lancaster has been searching for his whole life. Can his team pull off professionally what he’s hoping to do privately as well? Or will capturing their dream evade both the Cougars and Lancaster?

Let me state right away that I loved this story.  The couple (Townsend Harris and Lancaster Hart) filled me with warmth, laughter, and more love than I expected. I easily could have used several books dedicated to these two men, their now extended family, and their new journey together.  That’s how much I came to adore them.  They were funny, relatable, and that dialog often had me giggling madly away!  Then came Lancaster’s kids and grandmother Marigold, and my love affair was complete and seriously, I need more books with this troop!  This is a story that I felt was just beginning with readers, not ending.

Call it the Harris/Hart Family Saga….

And the Cayuga Cougars….

Well, yes, I think that’s probably my issue with a book I loved.  It’s a story full of beginnings and its supposed to be a series finale. A story about endings. Instead there’s a huge element with a pair that’s absolutely a cliffhanger.

For me, a series finale wraps things up.  Gives its characters and its readers a sense of closure, hopefully happy ones, but closure nevertheless. Storylines are ended, arcs come to a close, and couples/their relationships head out the door in a manner that make all those stories we read mean something.  For us and them.

And while we end up with a team that accomplished one thing, it’s also in a state fraught with uncertainty.  Realistic? Yes.  A series finale? Hmmmm, perhaps not.

Now there are three more books coming to be written about one couple.  But it’s not a team book.  So a sense of incompletion lingers. At least for me.

So, did I love One-On-One (Cayuga Cougars #5) by V.L. Locey?  Yes.  I took Townsend and Lancaster completely into my heart.  I adored their romance and the town of Cayuga. I got to see it in a way I’ve never seen it before.  It was an intimate portrait of a small village and its people.  Scenic, layered, and so connectable.  Had it not been a series finale, the rating would have been considerably higher.

Only that aspect of the story brought the rating down because it just doesn’t  feel like a series finale to me.  I’m left thinking there’s more to come, more for each team member to play a role in another story and that’s not how a series finale should leave me.

I do recommend this story and the series.  It’s a terrific ride, especially if you love hockey and romance.

Cover Design: Rêverie Design & Formatting.  I like the cover, goes with the series and the models ages could be older enough to be the characters.

Synopsis

A little blue world, the third planet from the sun. It’s home to seven billion people—with all manner of faiths, beliefs, and customs, divided by bigotry and misunderstanding—who will soon be told they are not alone in the universe. Anyone watching from the outside would pass by this fractured and tumultuous world, unless they had no other choice. Todd Landon is one of these people, living and working in a section of the world called the United States of America. His life is similar to those around him: home, family, work, friends, and a husband.

On the cusp of the greatest announcement humankind has ever witnessed, Todd’s personal world is thrown into turmoil when his estranged brother shows up on his front porch with news of ships heading for Earth’s orbit. The ships are holding the Nentraee, a humanoid race who have come to Earth in need of help after fleeing the destruction of their homeworld. How will one man bridge the gap for both the Humans and Nentraee, amongst mistrust, terrorist attacks, and personal loss? Will this be the start of a new age of man or will bigotry and miscommunication bring this small world to its knees and final end?

Maintenance drones passed the Speaker General’s window as Mirtoff stifled a yawn. How long would they be here this time? The fleet stopped in a holding pattern while repairs were performed, the darkness of space surrounding them. Soft light from the window surround bathed her in a warm glow as she brushed away the few strands of hair that dropped from her tightly braided bun.

The past several months had been difficult, and she’d had little sleep. The suffering of her people weighed heavily on her. Mining Ship 9 had a malfunction in one of its storage bays while on an Ĩ-type asteroid pulling out much-needed water, nickel, cobalt, and platinum. One hundred and fifty people died that day.

She perused her terminal, chairs, conference table, and sofa. At times her office was claustrophobic. It’s bigger than what most of my people have. She gathered her scattered thoughts and sipped from the now warm cup of tuma.

Faa was curled up on the couch. Their gazes met, and a comforting smile filled his face. He closed his big green eyes and nestled his gray, fur-covered head onto one of the sofa’s pillows for a nap. His tail shifted gently back and forth.

He’s calm today.

They’d been inseparable since he was plucked from the wreckage of Agricultural Ship 15 ten years ago when he was a seyas. Perhaps a month old. She had been consoling survivors and reviewing the damage. Twelve people died that day, including her sister-in-law.

Faa still suffered from nightmares, but he had always been a sensitive cádo. If he could communicate his pain and fear better so she might help him, maybe it wouldn’t bother her so much, but the cádo were limited in that manner. She always considered it so unfair to them, particularly Faa.

Sighing, Mirtoff took a final swallow of her tuma, savoring the last of the now warm liquid, preferring it chilled as it should be, but unwilling to cool it again. The sweet, spicy flavors were still there, so the taste was pleasant enough. Turning her attention back to the chaos of her desk and the report-filled datapads, she rubbed her temple. The people and the cádo were weary of traveling through space. It had been too long.

If J’Veesa had intended Mirtoff and the Nentraee people to wander the stars, she would never have created their world, even if it was gone now. They had a home once.

They needed to find somewhere they could build a new life, a new world. They needed off these ships.

She glanced out the window again at the 450 ships carrying her people. How long would it take them to find a home?

Of course, there were other worlds and other civilizations, but none that fit her people and their needs. J’Veesa never meant for the Nentraee to be worshiped like gods; there was only one God, J’Veesa. Many names, yes, but there was only one.

They needed to either find a world void of life or one with a civilization they could work with and learn from. Their first choice was a world with equals on it.

What if they never found one? What if the ships stopped working? What if they were forced to do what some in the military had suggested? What if they had to take advantage of a lesser civilization? Or worse, what if…

“Enough,” she huffed and turned back to the reports.

Faa startled and glanced up at her. “Provider?” he asked in a soft murmur. His speech was poor but understandable.

“It’s nothing, little one. I’m sorry.”

He shook his head and settled back in his chair, his big eyes not leaving her.

She grabbed one of the datapads to review. Agricultural Ship 23 was still under repair, forcing the other agro ships to increase production and require rationing. Again. She sighed.

There was a chirp at the door. Odd. Is it that late? Faa’s eyes didn’t leave her, but his floppy ears perked up.

Her aide, Danu, was gone for the day. The lines of her mouth softened into a smile when the visitor’s image appeared on her desk monitor. She tapped a button on the screen, and then the door opened swiftly and Mi’ko entered.

“Vice speaker, tell me you’ve brought good news,” Mirtoff’s brows raised, and her lips pulled up at the edges. “Would you like a tuma? It’s a little warm, but it’s still good.”

Faa looked at the vice speaker; his eyes softened and his muzzle twitched. If anything happened to her or her family, she wouldn’t be surprised if he chose Mi’ko as his new Provider.

Mi’ko regarded her with his aging, aqua eyes. The wrinkles around his mouth turned up into a smile as he spoke. “No, thank you, Madam Speaker.”

He was still in his traditional gray suit. She wondered if he’d been home yet. His brown hair was neatly groomed and pulled back, past his shoulders. His lopsided tieback was coming loose, which allowed a few wisps of hair to fall free.

“I have news,” Mi’ko said. “The signals we’ve been studying have promise. We locked onto the frequencies, followed them, and found more transmissions.” He typed on his datapad and a three-dimensional holographic image lifted from the screen, revealing a small solar system. He pointed at the third planetoid, and it zoomed in. “I think this might be what we’ve been looking for.”

A Stella Review: How Not to Blend (Lovestrong #1) by Susan Hawke

RATING 4 out of 5 stars

One clueless single dad…

Dr. Corbin Davis is a busy guy just trying to do his best as a single parent. He may be oblivious to a lot of things, but surely he would’ve noticed something as important as his fifteen-year-old son, Grayson, being bullied, right? And what the heck is non-binary, and why hasn’t Gray shared this all-important part of himself with his own dad?

Plus one sassy Southerner…

Andy Ferguson, or Kandi as the Thursday night drag community knows him, is just trying to get along in a small town and hold things together while he takes care of his beloved Gam-Gam. If she’d just get off his back about finding himself a man, that would be fantastic, thank you very much. He’ll get around to love… one of these days.

Equals a pair of fake-boyfriends who will keep you in stitches.

When Corb gets the wild idea to ask Andy to pose as his boyfriend to let Gray know that his dad is bisexual and open-minded enough to talk to about his nonbinary status, Andy is amused and just intrigued enough to say yes… especially since he seems to be in the market for a fake boyfriend himself, if it will get Gam-Gam to quit nagging.

This is the first book in the LOVESTRONG series about finding love and being yourself in a small town. Intended only for 18+ readers, this is an mm romance fill with all the fun, fluff, and feels you’d want from an S. Hawke book.

How Not To Blend is the first book I read by this author (considering the other name too). I like the “fake boyfriend” trope, I like stories where the main character is a father, I like characters that carry heavy background on their shoulders. I found these elements in this new release so I took a chance and picked it up. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. In my opinion the plot was well developed and delivered. It was not a boring reading, cause things happened, I was often waiting for the next shoe to drop. Sure, a couple of scenes were over the top, sometimes facts were too simple. But what I look for in my books are escaping and good times, here I got them. Plus a lot of laughs, some tears, a lovely happy ending. And I met quite a lot of second characters I’d like to read their own HEAs. Moreover, for a very personal reason, I felt a deep connection with Andy and Corbin and that’s the main reason why I ignored the faults the story has and easily enjoyed the journey.

The cover art by Ana J Phoenix is well done but I can’t see the MCs in the model and so not fitting at all.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Out in the Offense (Out in College #3) by Lane Hayes

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5

Christian Rafferty is a quarterback at a small private college. He’s determined to both win another championship and keep his father off his back about his future plans. He might not graduate, though, unless he gets help with statistics.  Math is not his friend.

Rory Kirkland is a former wrestler and recent college grad who tutors and coaches wrestling at the Y. He’s an out and proud bi man; and he recognizes something of himself in Christian when they meet over coffee to discuss statistics.

I love Lane Hayes’s writing style and her characters are always fresh and interesting, well-rounded and generally likeable.  However, in this story that’s about all I liked—the characters.  Christian and Rory were two nice guys, who meet, fall in love, and that’s it. Oh, did I mention Christian is deep in the closet? Well, that’s the crux of the matter. And, of course, he has religious parents and a father who has his career all mapped out for him, and he worries about all of this throughout most of the book.

So I enjoyed the story of Christian and Rory, but there was nothing distinctive about it, nothing to make it stand out from others—just the same old basic plot twist. To be honest, I was bored.  I kept hoping for more, but it was same old… The excitement came toward the end when Christian was outed to his football team and then told his father who, as expected, stopped speaking to him.  The young men found their HEA together, however, and all is well in their world.  The end.

The cover by Reese Dante features a bare-chested handsome young man holding a football and wearing football uniform pants. The style is similar to other Lane Hayes books in the series.

An Alisa Review: Elemental Magick (The Donovan Coven #1) by Jacki James

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

For most of Aaron’s life, things have been uninteresting, boring, safe–just the way he likes them. He makes his decisions based on logic and reason and he doesn’t believe in paranormal mumbo jumbo like crystals and tarot cards and witches.

When he sees an ad for an estate sale at the old house on the edge of town, he doesn’t see any harm in going and buying some things like an old book with odd symbols on the front for his antique shop. Who cares if the old woman who owned the house was rumored to be a witch; everyone knows witches aren’t real.

After accidentally raising a demon by goofing around with a spell from the book, Aaron realizes that there are things in this world that logic and reason can’t explain. That witches are indeed real, and that he just might be one too.

Malakai has been searching for the Coughlan Grimoire for years, knowing there are spells in the book that can be dangerous if they fall into the wrong hands. Securing the book so his coven can protect it is of the utmost importance.

He isn’t prepared for the adorable rookie witch with the curly red hair and incredible latent power. But to his surprise, keeping Aaron safe and close by his side quickly becomes more important than the Grimoire. More important than anything.

Before Malakai and Aaron can be together they will have to battle vampires, wolf shifters, and one very powerful warlock. Malakai can’t do it alone; it will take, friends, family, and for Aaron to figure out just how powerful he is if the two of them are going to protect the book and make their new found bond last forever.

Oh, what a great start to a new series.  Aaron is confused by the sudden commotion a simple book has brought to his life but Kai is definitely the best part of it.  Malakai wants to love and protect Aaron from all the dangers they will face but still allows him to learn and fight beside him.

I loved how Aaron was able to accept and adjust his life to the new reality in which he lives.  Seeing Kai and Aaron work well together and only grow their bond was wonderful.  I loved all of the side characters in this book and look forward to more in the series to hopefully feature some of them.

We see both of their points of view and learn more about these characters’ backgrounds.  I loved how well they complemented each other.  Aaron comes to magick so naturally it will be great to see how he grows in the future.

The cover art by Vicki Brostenianc is great and I love the visual of Kai.
