Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Andrew Grey here today to talk about writing, inspiration and his latest novel, The Playmaker.  Welcome, Andrew.

Sometimes its hard to know exactly where a story comes from.  For me ideas spark from so many places.  But this story came to me as I was watching a football game at a friends house and one of the color announcers was talking about how one a particular player had a reputation for disorganization off the field.  After that I didn’t pay attention to the game any longer because I was already thinking about Monty and Hunter.  Sometimes ideas come to me that quickly and other times they develop slowly.  When they spring forth as rapidly as The Playmaker did all I can do is write them down as quickly as I can so I can capture all the rich idea goodness.  Ideas for stories have a shelf life.  If you don’t do something with them they fade away.  For me ideas come and go, but the one that started The Playmaker, I held on tight to.  I really hope you enjoy the fruit of that idea.

Professional football player Hunter Davis is learning that saying he’s gay is very different from actively being in a relationship with another man—especially in the eyes of his teammates and fans. So when Hunter needs a personal assistant to keep him organized, he asks for a woman to prevent tongues from wagging.

Montgomery Willis badly needs to find work before he loses everything. There’s just one position at the agency where he applies, but the problem is, he’s not a woman. And he knows nothing about football. Still, Hunter gives him a chance, but only because Monty’s desperate.

Monty soon proves his worth by saving Hunter’s bacon on an important promotional shoot, and Hunter realizes he might have someone special working for him—in more ways than one. Monty’s feelings come to the surface during an outing in the park when Hunter decides to teach Monty a bit about the game, and pictures surface of them in some questionable positions. Hunter is reminded that knowing he’s gay and seeing evidence in the papers is very different for the other players, and he might have to choose between two loves: football and Monty.

Excerpt

“You need to go now,” Monty said from the doorway. “And when you get the chance, we should go over some of this paperwork in the office. A lot of it appears to be garbage and junk mail that I shredded, but there is other stuff I wanted to check with you about before I destroy it.”

“Okay. Put the things to go through aside.”

“Is there anything else you need before you go?” The doorbell rang, and Monty hurried to the front door. “Oh thank goodness,” Monty practically squealed, and Hunter wondered what was going on. He followed and saw Monty cradling two boxes in his arms. “You’re a lifesaver.” Monty closed the door and practically ran into him.

“What’s all this? And why are you receiving deliveries here?” he demanded, his hands on his hips.

Monty looked like he’d been slapped. “It’s some things Helen sent over for me.” He stepped back and seemed to shrink. “She said I’d need a laptop and a phone.” He set the boxes down, opened one box and pulled out a brand new iPhone and then an iBook computer from the other, still in their packaging.

“Oh.” Hunter stalked away, feeling like an ass, but he wasn’t going to let Monty see that. He grabbed his jacket and felt Monty looking him over. “What?” He glanced down at himself.

“Can we see if you have a shirt at least that doesn’t look like something worn by Richie Cunningham?” Hunter wasn’t sure what was so terrible about a plaid button-up and khakis.

“I have to go.” He slipped on his jacket.

“You have five minutes. I was pushing you to be early.”

Hunter huffed—he’d been doing that a lot lately—climbed the stairs, and took off his jacket as he stalked down the hallway. He went to his room with Monty right behind him and opened the closet.

Monty peered inside and turned back to him, looking aghast. “My God.” He moved hangers aside and continued until he reached the very end of the closet. “Thank God. There is something decent in here.” Monty pulled out a shirt that Hunter couldn’t remember having, and handed it to him. “Put this on. I bet it will look nice on you. There isn’t anything I can do with the pants, but at least….”

Hunter unbuttoned his shirt, and Monty went silent. Hunter took the new one off the hanger and shrugged it on. When he turned back to Monty, he glanced away quickly. “How does it feel?”

“Soft.” Hunter buttoned it up and then started to tuck it in.

“No. Leave it out. It will look better, and the silk is way more appealing than those pants.” Monty smoothed out the shirt and rolled up the cuffs, then stepped back and smiled. “Now you look like a million bucks.” Monty tossed him the jacket. “Go get ’em.”

“You’re coming with me,” Hunter said, and Monty squeaked and hurried out of the room and down the stairs. When Hunter caught up with him, he was pulling the phone out of its case and shoving it into his bag.

STRW Flash Fiction Contest and This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

STRW Flash Fiction Contest

As the deadline for the end of our flash fiction contest approaches, there’s still plenty of time to get your entries in.  Flash fiction or micro fiction is just, that a tiny story.  It can be in any genre, any trope, and for this contest and always for this blog, it must be LGBTQIA.

Even a short time ago, I would never have thought we would be entering the sort of political times, rough waters nationally that seem to be ahead of us. Maybe I’m wrong but I think we find ourselves moving along a scale of emotions, ranging from disbelief to shock to horror to anger and anywhere in-between.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words tries to stay away from politics and concentrates on books (although with subject matter those can intertwine).  But this may be a time when an overlap occurs.

Need to give voice to your emotions?  Write about it and send it in.  We are going to be running our entries here for everyone to read. Story rights remain with the authors.  We are still awarding gift certificates to the first 5 entries.  Our deadline is still November 30th at midnight EST.    All flash fiction should be sent to scatteredthoughtsandroguewords@gmail.com.  You are only limited by your imagination and the fact that you should be 18 years of age or older. Open to everyone! Now get writing.

Zac never had a family of his own, but Rudy has enough to share.

Shy, inexperienced Rudy has a crush on Zac from the moment his new colleague walks through the door. On an office night out before Christmas, Rudy finds the courage to make a move, and they form a tentative bond. When he discovers Zac will be alone at Christmas, he invites Zac to come home with him.

Zac prefers to keep people at arm’s length. Yet when Rudy offers him a family Christmas it’s impossible to resist. With no parents of his own, Zac is pleasantly surprised to be welcomed by Rudy’s. The only drawback is that everyone assumes they’re a couple. Unwilling to disappoint Rudy’s mum and make Christmas awkward, they decide not to deny it.

It’s not a chore for Zac to pose as Rudy’s boyfriend, but the pretence makes him want things that scare him—things like a real relationship with Rudy. Zac’s suffered enough rejection in his life already and is afraid to risk his heart. If he can get over his past rejection and let Rudy inside his armour, he might get more for Christmas than he ever imagined.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Not Another One Hit Wonder by J.M. Snyder

Rating: 4.25 stars out of  5

4c0df-not_another_one_hit_wonder_400x600When best friends Jamie Eckert and Derek Duran realized they were in love, they took their relationship to the next level. But then Derek’s budding music career took off, and so did Derek.

Twenty years later, Jamie still lives in the small town of Ashbury, Virginia, where he grew up. He’s grown up and moved on — now he owns the family funeral home business and is raising Riley, his precocious six-year-old adopted daughter.

But emotions Jamie thought long buried are stirred up again when he gets an early morning removal call. The deceased is Derek’s mother and Riley’s babysitter, Mrs. Duran. Now Derek’s back in town for the funeral, and he turns to Jamie for support … in more ways than one.

Angry at Derek for not keeping in touch, and angrier at himself for still loving the man who left him behind, Jamie is torn between his professional duty and his feelings for Derek. Will he be able to put aside his past with Derek to carry out Mrs. Duran’s final wishes? Or is Derek interested in rekindling their relationship after all this time?

Not Another One Hit Wonder by J.M Snyder is a warmhearted, wonderful romance.  A lovely second chance at love story, it picks up twenty years later in the lives of Jamie Eckert and Derek Duran, whose lives have taken very different paths than the ones they had envisioned as young men together.

Snyder is able to capture just the right amounts of nostalgia and bitterness in Jamie and Derek’s pov.  Oddly, enough it comes through with Derek in scenes with  Jamie, in remembering what they had, and in what has happened in the interim.  The author has  given these men layers of age and experience, weighted them down with some failures and in Jamie’s case, a daughter he adores and a family business (a mortuary) to run.  That’s another oddity in romances…a mc who’s a mortician.  Kind of liked that while appreciating that Snyder spared us the details of the business.   He gave us just enough to make Jamie and his job believable and grounded.

This is a short story but the author is able to bring all the emotion and history together for us quickly and deliver a punch.  The time frame too  is equally short. I would love to see another story to revisit this couple and see how its going with them.  I can’t help but think their path won’t be a completely easy one.  This is a realistic HFN.

I adored this story and this most lovers of contemporary romance will feel the same way.  The writing flows beautifully and easily.  Its a quick, lovely read and one I recommend.

Cover art does the story justice too. Great job.

Excerpt

I pull into the red-striped area next to my usual parking spot and pull up my handbrake hard enough to jerk the car forward a little. The striped spot is double-wide — during a funeral, the police who will accompany us to the graveside park here — but I pull in as close to the other car as I can. I don’t care if the other driver is grieving over a long-lost relative; that’s no excuse for driving like an idiot and parking where he doesn’t belong. And I plan to tell him just that, too. Even if he storms into the funeral home and tries to duck me, he has one hell of a surprise coming when he finds out I’m the person he’s here to see.

I glance over but the driver has his head down, digging for something on the seat beside him, and I can’t see his face. Which means he knows he’s done something wrong and is going to wait until I drive off before he gets out of the car. Surprise, I work here. What’s your excuse?

Grabbing my cup of coffee, I get out of the car and slam the door shut, hard. As I turn, the other car’s door opens. I see a shaggy head of dark hair — still not looking at me, as if ignoring me will make me go away — followed by a lithe male body. A Rolling Stones concert T-shirt with the sleeves torn off, skinny black jeans so tight they almost creak, a faded pair of black Converse that look as old as I am.

Really? I shake my head. That’s what you wear to a funeral home? Show some respect …

Wait, I think I recognize those shoes.

My heart skips a beat, and my fingers go numb. I set down my coffee on the hood of my car before I can drop it. “Jesus Christ.” My voice squeaks a little when I ask, “Derek?”

The guy looks up, finally, giving his head a familiar little shake to toss his hair out of gray-green eyes I used to stare into for hours when I was younger. The same eyes that still haunt my dreams from time to time. Derek Duran, in the flesh. He’s no longer eighteen and perfect — he’s aged like me, and the lines around his eyes and mouth suggest he’s had a rougher time of it than I have.

But when he smiles, one corner of his lips pulls up higher than the other to show off the eyetooth he broke on a seesaw when he was eight. In that instant, the years fall away from him, from us both. My body flushes hot all over and I feel like I did the last time I saw him, the last time I held him close.

“Hey, Jamie. Long time, no see.”

His voice is throatier than I remember, smoked out and husky and, I’ll admit it, more than a little sexy. It suits his grown-up appearance, and helps distance me from the boy I used to date.

I ask, “You know you’re in my spot, right?”

With a guilty start, he looks around, his gaze settling on the sign in front of his car. “Oh, shit. I’m sorry. I can move –”

“Don’t worry about it.” My earlier anger is gone, shocked out of me by his sudden appearance. Sudden? Who am I kidding? I knew he was on his way; I’ve been looking for him ever since we spoke on the phone.

You’ve been looking longer than that, a voice inside me whispers, but I tamp it down quickly before my thoughts can run away with it.

A smile spreads across my face as I look him over again. Damn, he still looks good. Not quite the same as I remember, but better in some ways, and I’ll take what I can get. I find myself falling right back into the way we were, as if no time has passed.

“Come on inside,” I tell him. “We can go over the plans your mother made for her funeral. I’m sure that’s why you’re here.”

“Yeah, sure.”

He shoves his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. It’s a snug fit, and the way the black denim stretches across his crotch draws my gaze down where it doesn’t belong. You know nothing about him now, I remind myself. Where he lives, who he’s dating, if he’s married. He’s here to talk about his mother’s funeral, for Christ’s sake. At least act professional.

As he steps around my car, I reach for my coffee, ready to lead the way. My mind is already several steps ahead — I see me holding the door open for him, the two of us sharing an awkward grin, then the shocked look on Molly’s face when she realizes who’s followed me in.

But his hand catches mine before I can pick up the Starbucks cup. I raise a questioning eyebrow as he comes closer, right up on me now. When I take a step back, the car’s sideview mirror stops me.

“Jamie,” Derek sighs, his thumb stroking the inside of my wrist. His touch is warm and velvety and strong, and I can imagine his hands on other parts of my body all too easily. He stares at me, his eyes hungry, the same look in them that I remember from when we were together. His voice drops to a sexy rumble. “God, I’ve missed you.”

My knees go weak at the admission. “Me, too,” I breathe. “I mean –”

Before I can explain what I mean, his mouth covers mine with a needy, desperate kiss.

About the Author

I’m a writer whose main interest lies in gay erotic fiction. Why? Why not? I write what’s in my head and I guess that’s just how my mind works. You’ll find that my stories run from contemporary to science fiction, because I like a variety of different genres, but the characters are all gay men. They’re just who I like to write about, and who I’ve found my fans like to read about. And I don’t shy away from the sex, either (though some people say I don’t write enough). Gay erotic romance, you could call it. Works for me.

Currently I live in Richmond, Virginia, and work full-time running JMS Books and Queerteen press. I have two very spoiled cats named Marley and Lew. On those rare occasions when I’m not writing or editing or marketing my books, I like reading (mostly fantasy, sci-fi, and non-fiction), visiting Civil War historical sites, watching cheesy 80’s TV shows, and playing video games (I’m a Legend of Zelda fanatic).

I graduated from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. While there, I was the Fantasy Editor of The Fractal, our campus sci-fi/fantasy journal. After graduation I started my own speculative fiction webzine, Disenchanted, published quarterly for almost two years. Though it was mostly fantasy, I began to explore gay fiction in the last few issues.

At some point I stumbled upon slash fan fiction and thought, “I can do that.” I dabbled in various fandoms (X-Men, Star Wars, an awesome video game called Suikoden), but when I finally got serious about fan fic, it was in “real person slash,” specifically Justin and Lance from the boy band, ‘N Sync.

A Jeri Review: Double Dealing: A Marriage of Inconvenience: An Arranged Marriage by Nicole Colville

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

double-dealing-by-nicole-colvilleI loved the premise of this book- a modern day marriage of convenience to further a business deal. Ryder is mega rich, running the company started by his family. Trace isn’t quite as rich, but he isn’t shopping at Target either. They have a chance meeting and a super hot night together; without knowing who the other was. Even though it was one night, there was practically “insta-love”. First turn off for me. But Trace is firmly in the closet and plans on staying that way if he wants to take over his family business.

Fast forward a few months when Ryder’s company is trying to take over Trace’s company. Friendly turns hostile turns into a marriage for a year to cement the deal.

So while I liked the premise and like parts of the book and story line, my issues were these. Trace had a big problem with Ryder acting like he could buy whatever he wanted- including people. Yea, kind of he did act that way. He was pompous and arrogant and while there were hints that there was a nice guy under there, I didn’t see it. His ruse for the marriage was that he was in love with Trace. But he didn’t act like it.

On the other side I really did feel like Trace cared about Ryder quite a bit but was not only scared, was totally railroaded. By a man who supposedly loves him and by his completely homophobic father who seemed to readily agree to the marriage.

Trace swears there will be no sex- and yet they constantly have sex. Ryder swears they won’t mess around at the office. And they mess around at the office.

So a decent story, hot sex, but a bit disjointed. I don’t regret reading it, but I can’t say I would read it again.

Kellie Dennis Book Cover by Design (Illustrator) details story elements and the couple. Eye-catching definitely.

BLURB

Caught in a messy merger with the mounting pressure to close a multi-million dollar deal, business mogul Ryder Granger finds things are more hostile than the average takeover, but he’s not just interested in acquiring the lucrative Lyon coffee chain. He has an entirely more personal motive hidden beneath his cool exterior and designer suit.

Trace Lyon believes the merger with B&G could be the way out of the closet his strict Southern father keeps him locked in, but there’s one big problem. Ryder Granger is everything Trace wants, and everything his father despises. Two years ago, they shared one incredible night together, but despite the connection and the intense heat, both walked away.

With the deal falling through, Ryder brings an unexpected offer to the table — a more personal type of merger between the two rival families, one Trace is dead against. After all, an arranged marriage in New York in 2016… That could never work out. Taking control in the only way he can, Trace agrees to marry Ryder, but secretly plots to double deal both his father and Ryder. He just has to get this whole absurd wedding out of the way first and ignore how happy Ryder makes him feel.

There are questions he’s hesitant to ask, however. Is Skye a man or a woman? And, what does it mean that he doesn’t really care?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nicole grew bored being a supermodel genius who worked part time for NASA, and decided to take a break from helping solve the mysteries of the universe with Stephen Hawkins to write m/m romance.

She has a loving relationship with her hubby of twenty years, and has achieved a lot in her short life considering she’s only eighteen. She has fourteen dogs of all different breeds, plus twenty cats, and when she’s not tending to their every need, and solving complex math problems, she loves to sew and can be often found knitting in the garden, which she maintains all by herself with her magical green fingers.

Finding time to make all of her own clothing and master the kitchen better than Gordon Ramsey, she’s also a vegan domestic goddess and can often be found cooking up a storm bare foot in her kitchen.

Okay, so that’s not true, especially the cooking part, though I do tend to be bare foot and I swear like Gordon does while burning my latest creation — and I still think NASA will be getting in touch. Any day now!! *crosses fingers* I could sooo do that job because I’m so obviously awesome, but until they do…

I’m a full time author of M/M Romance and Erotica, and somehow I have several bestselling books under my belt. I’ve been writing for four years, and I self publish all my work under Hidden Pleasures Publishing along with my amazing team of helpers in the form my cover designer Kellie Dennis, editor Jessica McKenna, and all of my beta readers and PA’s.

I’m a wife to my beloved hubby and mother to two young girls, and I do in fact have two cats who I adore, but no dog, as the hubby put his foot down. I live in Leeds in the North of England and I love it, despite the terrible weather.

My men are all seeking what everyone is, true love mixed with passion and their own happy-ever-after full of laughter and tears.

A Jeri Release Day Review: The Playmaker by Andrew Grey

Rating: 4 Stars out of 5

the-playmaker-by-andrew-greyWhen you are out and proud, but forced to live a celibate life, are you really out?

Hunter is a professional football player on the rise. While most of the world and the other players accept that he is gay, they don’t want to hear about it. Being gay is ok, being in a relationship apparently is not. During the off season his manager convinces him to hire a personal assistant to not only get his life together, but to get him where he needs to be. On time. Which is a problem for Hunter

Montgomery is desperate. Living on his sister’s couch, he needs a job so he can get out of her hair. Opportunity falls in his lap when he convinces the employment agency to give him a chance as a personal assistant.

Hunter is shocked to see Monty- a guy- at his door. Monty isn’t shocked at all, because he knows nothing about football and doesn’t realize he should be fan boying over Hunter.

Of course, sparks lead to more which lead to more. But not everyone is happy to see Hunter with another man.

I’ve only recently discovered Andrew Grey and I have yet to be disappointed. I am happy to say that most of his books make me cry and this one didn’t. While there was some tension and a falling out, it wasn’t the heart breaker it normally is. That isn’t a bad thing.

I really enjoyed seeing two men who were already out. No one was struggling with the sexuality. And honestly, it seemed like this would happen in the real world. People being totally fine with a sports star being gay, but freaking out when he is acting on it.

Monty was adorable. He probably wouldn’t like that term. But he swept in and turned Hunter’s life around. Without giving a flip that he was some big shot. They developed a sweet genuine relationship and were perfect together.

There were some great side characters; Monty’s sister and her girlfriend as well as Hunter’s teammates. Their interactions made the story more real and not just couple centric.

Another must read from Andrew Grey.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is perfect.  It captures both characters while being bright and eye-catching.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Snow & Secrets (Stanford Creek #3) by R.J. Scott as Rozenn Scott

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

snow-and-secrets-by-rj-scottFirst comes trust, then love… then the fight to stay alive.

Pop star Tyler Hart is desperate for peace after a humiliating public scandal. It seems like Stanford Creek may well be the place to lay low. After all, it worked for his friends and former bandmates, Cody and Danny. He borrows a cabin and settles in for a quiet Christmas…well, not quite.

Garrett Campbell is on the run. Wounded in the line of duty, he escapes to the only place he feels safe, Stanford Creek and his brother’s cabin. Only he doesn’t realize he’ll have a roommate, and a sexy one at that.

Amid snow falls and winter winds, passion burns bright. When danger threatens to follow Garrett, he has to decide whether to run again before his secrets could kill him and the man of his dreams.

I’ve not read the other books in the Stanford Creek series but as it turns out, thats fine.  Snow & Secrets, the third story by RJ Scott writing as Rozenn Scott, works great as a standalone.

Scott loves to combine romance and action/adventure in her stories and Snow & Secrets has plenty of both.  Tyler Hart, pop star and member of a popular band, went through a bad breakup.  His actions post breakup?  Well, they led to a drunken night at a bar that ends in a blurry,  misguided bathroom hookup…that went straight to the tabloids.  Outed to all, its affected his band, his friends and Tyler is pressured to the point of panic attacks to get away from it all.

I love how deeply the author is able to get us into the wounded mindset that is Tyler Hart.  He’s in a bad place in every way and the author is able to let us feel his pain and connect us to this troubled man.

Next up?  Garrett Campbell who’s carrying enough emotional baggage (to say nothing of his physical injuries) to fill a 747.  Garrett’s last tour of duty, a secret mission, was one of nightmares.  Garrett carries the mental and emotional scars with him, unable to put it and the questions he has about the mission behind him.  Unable to continue to work as he has, he too needs peace.  And both men end up in a remote cabin in Stanford Creek.  Turns out they have close connections that lead to their being roommates.

Scott gives us two perspectives here, Tyler’s and Garrett’s.  We get to see what has driven both men to this  point and place, we watch them juggle with their pasts which continue to haunt them, their desire for each other in the close quarters, and the passions and strengths that come out when danger follows one of them into the woods.

Its not just the main characters we get to fall in love with. No, RJ Scott (as she is always so good at), gives us a cast of believable warm human beings to pull close around us like a comfortable, snug blanket.  We connect with everyone here.  Sisters, brothers, friends…enough that, even though this works as a standalone story, you want to go back and read the other stories because Stanford Creek has become real and inviting.  And yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing next.  Gong to pick up and dive into the stories I missed next.

I’m hoping that, since some of the mystery was left open-ended, that RJ will be taking this thread involving Garrett and extending it into the next story.  Fingers crossed.  I’d loved to see that happen.

Either way, here’s another RJ Scott story to love and one I recommend.  Pick up Snow & Secrets, grab a blanket to wrap up in and prepare to enjoy a wonderful romance.

Cover art is very much in keeping  with how I pictured the characters.

A Paul B Review: Makepeace (Taking Shield #3) by Anna Butler

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

makepeace-by-anna-butlerA year has passed since Shield Captain Bennet was rescued from Telnos.  Having spent the past year doing his research at the Strategy Unit and teaching at the Thebaid Institute, Bennet is anxious to get back out into space.  However, he must rotate out of Shield for three years and serve in Fleet.  Before that happens, Bennet comes to a realization that the Maess have been using Makepeace, an old Albion colony that was overtaken over a century before.  If his analysis of the information he took from T-18 is correct, the Maess are holding humans as prisoners on the former farming colony.

Having passed his theories along to IntCom, Bennet is assigned to the dreadnought Corvais as their Flight Captain.  Having served onboard for almost eight months, Bennet formulates some chilling possibilities what is happening on the lost colony of Makepeace.  Surmising that the Maess are using the prisoners for scientific experiments, he alerts his superiors of his theories.  When confronted with the possibilities of what is going on, the Albion president authorizes Bennet to rescue the prisoners, with the proviso that if the humans are being in any way controlled by the Maess, he is to not only destroy the base but take out the prisoners as well.  The ultimate decision would be his alone.  The prospect of killing almost 200 “innocents” weighs heavily on Bennet.

Bennet is assigned to the Caliban, a dreadnought whose commander happens to be considered an uncle by Bennet.  Warwick has been friends with his father Caeden since they were in the Military Academy together.  Known for his exploits, Warwick cannot wait to get behind enemy lines like Bennet has been doing all along with Shield.  When Bennet gets on board the Caliban, he finds that Warwick has developed a cult of personality around him to the point the crew almost worships him.  They too are excited to get behind enemy lines and attack instead of defending what territory they have left.  Bennet, having been behind enemy lines, knows that there is no real glory to being there and wonders if the crew is in for a rude awakening when they get to Makepeace.  But Bennet has enough to worry about with the prisoners and the side project that has been given to him.  He hopes this far deep into Maess territory there aren’t any problems…

The third book in the Taking Shield series once again has Bennet in the thick of a military campaign while trying to sort out his feelings not only for his family and lovers but also for the new crew of the Caliban.  He alone really knows the full extent of the mission that he is to undertake and the strain of it puts a stress on his daily living.  Because of this and his usual obliviousness to personal situations, Bennet is both surprised and yet in retrospect not shocked at the actions Warwick undertakes during the battle for Makepeace.  The results of the battle have far reaching effects on Bennet not only militarily but personally as well.  Seeing that one of his theories about the colony having been proved correct, Bennet feels isolated as to the decisions he has to make and a having taken a step away from humanity.  Bennet will have to deal with this when he joins his father on his next assignment on the Gyrfalcon.  I am waiting impatiently for the next book in the series.

The cover art by Wilde City Press once again is well done.  It has what has been described as a Maess form inside the standard Shield badge that has been on the previous covers.
