A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Patience (Forbes Mates #2) by Grace R. Duncan and Chistopher Boucher (Narrator)

Jamie Ryan literally runs into the man of his dreams. Jamie has shifted to his wolf form earlier than he expected, and while it’s rare, it’s dangerous in the city where humans may see. It’s also dangerous for the wolf when authorities spot him—authorities in the form of the local animal control officer. In his effort to creep away from the man with the long, looped pole, he’s gobsmacked by the scent of the human he meets.

Chad Sutton is a darn good detective—a former cop and now PI—and he reacts quickly to help the dog when his instincts tell him he needs to save the poor guy. Little did he know his wolfie-looking dog is a cute young man who happens to be a shifter. Chad doesn’t react poorly when confronted with the evidence as Jamie shifts to human. In fact, he’s quite accepting of everything Jamie tells him—including the fact that he’s Jamie’s mate.

The two get along very well immediately and Chad is totally accepting of the concept of a mate and the fact that it’s a man. The main thrust of the story is whether or not a mate bite will harm or kill Chad. Together, they research whatever they can find out from pack leaders, past and present, and ultimately the headquarters in Rome. Though Chad immediately emotionally accepted Jamie as his mate, whether or not he can handle the physical bite is something Jamie worries about. Actually, I found it odd that he easily accepted not only Jamie’s bond with him but he adapted to man-on-man sex quite easily. There was a bit of an explanation later in the story but for a man who never considered either a mate or sex with a man, this was a bit difficult to accept. And add to that the fact that Chad’s mother was also totally accepting and even enthusiastic, that segment of the audiobook required a stretch of the imagination until the author later explained his mother’s background.

Without going into further detail, I’ll simply say that this is one of those stories without a lot of outside conflict—inner turmoil? yes—outer conflict?—no. It’s a sweet tale and a smooth ride to love for these men. Christopher Boucher did a great job with the variety of voices and gave both Jamie and Chad distinct voices so it was easy to follow on audio.

This can be read as a standalone, even though a few characters from book one return in cameo roles. Their presence is fully explained, making it easy to follow on its own.

The cover by Reese Dante features two men cuddled together with a white wolf superimposed in the foreground. It’s attractive and well represents the essence of this love story.

An Ali Review: Gray’s Shadow (Kings of Hell MC #4) by K.A. Merikan

The moment Shadow lays his eyes on Gray, he wants to crawl under Gray’s skin and make the human his.

Gray on the other hand isn’t willing to get attached to a monster destined to do the devil’s bidding and disappear once his time is up. Rejected, Shadow has to do everything in his power to convince his human that they belong together.

But as the clock ticks away precious minutes of Shadow’s existence, Gray will have to choose between his loyalty to the Kings of Hell MC and responsibility for the creature he brought into this world.

This ended up being my favorite book of the series. It was this wild combination of weird and pervy and sweet and romantic. Who knew that would be my thing?

The plot was exciting and I was drawn in from the beginning because I’ve never read a character like Shadow before. He was super unique in both his creation and his personality. A lot of things happen in this book that furthers the ongoing plot with Bael and Mr. Magpie. This part of the book was fast paced and kept me quickly flipping through pages to see what was going to happen next. I thought the authors did a great job with this aspect of the story and I had no idea what was going to happen next.

As much as I enjoyed the action part of the book, my favorite part was the romance. I loved every second Shadow and Gray were together. Things start off poorly and Gray was mean in places but I understood where he was coming from. As Gray begins to open up it was very emotional in places. Their time together was filled super hot sex scenes and really romantic moments. Gray and Shadow ended being a fantastic couple. It was a bit like a fated mate and that’s a trope I love.

This is not a standalone. There is an ongoing story arc and you will need to read the previous books to understand that. I can’t wait for the next book to see how things end up for the Kings of Hell.

Cover Art in the tones of greys, blacks, and whites are perfect. Matches up well with the subject matter although somewhat murky and draws you in like it should.

My Berlin

Hi, I’m JL Merrow, and I’m delighted to be here today as part of the blog tour to celebrate the release of Midnight in Berlin, my second MM werewolf romance.

Berlin’s always been one of the coolest cities around. Okay, maybe not always, but for the last hundred or so years at least. It was cool in the 1920s, when jazz was big and the nightlife was decadent. For queer men and women, it was an all-too-brief taste of freedom to live and love how they wanted, before Nazism and the Second World War came to take it all away. Christopher Isherwood recorded the spirit of the times in a book that became the musical Cabaret.

In the late 1970s, David Bowie went there (thereby increasing the coolness factor of Berlin significantly) to recover from drug addiction, and wrote some cool music including the classic, Heroes. The song is about lovers kissing in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, which since 1961 had separated communist-controlled East Berlin from West, tearing apart families and severing streets. The partition of Berlin was, of course, a legacy of WW2, when the capital of a defeated Germany was split between the Allies.

I visited Berlin at an impressionable age, way back in the summer of 1989. Part of a group doing voluntary work, I stayed in a West Berlin high school which was as close to the Wall as we are from the end of this sentence. The first night I was there, one of the lads took me to the top of the building to look out over the wall: the searchlights, the watchtowers, and the death strip. All the things I’d read about were suddenly very real.

Even as a visitor, you just couldn’t get away from the Wall in Berlin. Using the subway often meant crossing under East Berlin. The trains would slow as they passed through dimly-lit, disused ghost stations, their street entrances long concreted over. (Londoners of a certain age: think of Mornington Crescent.) And to see the famous Brandenburg Gate, symbol of the city, meant peering over a graffiti-covered section of the Wall into the East, where it was patrolled by armed guards. The gate was closed, and seemed likely to be so forever.

East Berlin, which as a foreigner I was able to visit for a day, was a city apart from the West. Beautiful, quiet—and completely devoid of consumerism. So few shops, with so little in them. I saw only one shoe shop, and there was a queue of around 30 people outside it, waiting to get in and look at the shoes. It wasn’t that I hadn’t heard what it was like in communist countries back then—but I suppose it took seeing it for myself for it to finally sink in.

The House at Checkpoint Charlie museum was—and still is—a monument to all those who risked everything for freedom from the oppressive regime in East Germany, and a testament to human ingenuity and spirit. It was sobering, learning about all those who paid for their dreams of freedom with their lives.

Perhaps you can imagine how I felt when, only a few months later, I saw footage from Berlin of jubilant people crowding across border points, and tearing down the Wall to the accompaniment of David Bowie’s anthem Heroes.

And when, a few years later, I finally got to walk through the Brandenburg Gate. Appropriately, it was during an anti-war protest.

About the Author

JL Merrow is that rare beast, an English person who refuses to drink tea. She read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, where she learned many things, chief amongst which was that she never wanted to see the inside of a lab ever again.

She writes (mostly) contemporary gay romance and mysteries, and is frequently accused of humour. Seth kept the last cup of coffee, now barely lukewarm, for the man who always sat alone, distant from the rest. There was something about him that mesmerized Seth in a way he couldn’t describe. It was probably the man’s eyes, which were a vivid shade of blue that pierced even the darkest night. He sat on the same bench every night, huddled in a tatty black trench coat.

“Seth.” Blue Eyes nodded his thanks as he wrapped his hands around the cup Seth handed to him.

“It’s not very warm, I’m afraid.”

Blue Eyes shrugged, never taking his gaze off Seth as he sipped the coffee. His dark hair fell to his shoulders in waves, framing his handsome face. His olive skin tone made him appear healthier than the rest, although Seth was reasonably sure that was deceptive. A short beard and mustache helped further define his broad chin and sculpted cheekbones. Seth thought to ask his name, but couldn’t convince the question to leave his lips.

He was always like that around Blue Eyes: tongue-tied and awkward. The man was incredibly gorgeous, and Seth couldn’t help but be physically attracted to him. Maybe in another lifetime, under very different circumstances, he would have the confidence to ask Blue Eyes more about himself; discover the mysteries sparkling in the depths of his eyes. But as the youngest, I still didn’t know how to hunt or even survive the sunlight, so I was stuck here in this old mausoleum of a house. That is, until the werewolves came back. They found me right away, of course, and to my shock, they had Valerian, the leader of my old coven, living with them as the mate of the alpha wolf, Finn. Valerian and Mason, the beautiful blond mate of both Finn and Valerian—don’t ask; it’s way too complicated—both begged Finn to let me stay. He did, but he put me under the control of a big, mean, gorgeous, sexy wolf named Connor.

A new pack, a new beginning, a little betrayal, some frequent fighting, a lot of sex and even some spanking, and you have a rousing and romantic adventure with the Hybrid wolves.

This series is continuing to intrigue me. I liked getting to see Mason, Finn and Valerian continuing to build the trust in their relationship. Connor has been mourning his dead mate for a long time and has trouble accepting his pull to Lucas. Lucas hasn’t had the best life since he was turned into a vampire and he still has trouble knowing what to do.

They are beginning a new pack that will be welcoming and it’s going to be a little bit of an adjustment. Finn and Valerian are still trying to feel accepted by their mates and for different reasons and Mason’s open defiance doesn’t help matters.

I was glad to see Mason, Finn and Valerian recognizing the work their relationship needs and taking some of the steps they need. I could feel Connor and Lucas’s pain and worries regarding their situation and how to act. I don’t always like when it takes a life or death situation for someone to completely accept how they feel for someone. I feel bad that Lucas wasn’t able to get the closer he hoped for and how what happened may affect his mother.

I liked cover art by E Keith it gives a nice visual of the house and of Connor and follows the style of the first book.

I’ll be honest. I struggled a lot with Midnight In Berlin. And at the beginning I didn’t even understand what was wrong. This is a second release and I missed it when it was first published. In the years the author has become a favorite, her works are always so great. That’s why, although I badly wanted to put this novel down and start reading something else, I had to force myself to finish it.

The plot is actually interesting, a little boring at the beginning because I didn’t get it what was going to happen. But then when there was some action and mystery to solve, I was interested and curious about Leon and Cristoph characters and their HEA. The writing superb as always and the scenes so well done, I felt I was there with the couple.

There were some elements I didn’t enjoy and why I rated the novel so low. First of all I was so upset with the resolution of the little mystery, I actually felt cheated, I don’t want to reveal anything but I thought it was too easy to just put things like that. There were quite a lot of secondary characters and I would have so loved to know more about them, but maybe there was no space for them. In fact to me the story felt rushed and ended too quickly, it surely deserved more pages, that way so many things would have been more explained and developed. Most of all the romance part, almost inexistent, should have had a more important role in the plot. And most likely that’s the main reason why I had trouble connecting with Leon and Christoph.

Midnight in Berlin is not the masterpiece I’m used to reading by JL Merrow, in my opinion the author last years’ releases are the best she has done.

The cover art by Tiferet Design is awesome, I adore it and find it eyecatching. I love the colours and it’s fitting. I couldn’t have asked for more from a cover. Well done.

An Ali Review: Death Days by Lia Cooper

By day, Professor Nicholas Littman works as an itinerant professor at a small college in the Pacific Northwest. He teaches seminars on mythology and the intersections of folklore and magic in the ancient world. By night, he’s the local necromancer, a rare magical talent that has left him alienated from other practitioners.

All Nick wants from life is to be left alone to run his magical experiments and teach kids the historical context of magic without anyone being the wiser. Unfortunately, his family is sworn to sit on the council of the Order of the Green Book—a group of magicians dating back to the Crusades—and they aren’t willing to take Nick’s no for an answer.

As though that wasn’t bad enough, a coven of Night Women has arrived in town, warning Nick that there are wolves at his door he had better take care of. But what can one necromancer do when every natural and supernatural card seems stacked against him?

This was a pretty entertaining paranormal story. There was a lot going on but it was easy to follow and I felt the author did a nice job on the world building. There are some common supernatural types of characters but the plot lines were a unique twist on them.

I liked the various characters and I enjoyed Nick at the main one. He’s was a bit grumpy and reminded me of a few professors I knew when I was in school. There was some witty dialogue and some humorous parts.

My main disappointment was that there was not much romance in this. There is a slow burn between Nick and his TA Jonah. Nothing really happens between them until the end of the book. This leads to my main complaint of this book. There were a lot of things left hanging and ending felt a bit rushed. I still had a bunch of questions at the end of the book and I wasn’t satisfied with the romance. If this was book one in a series then I would be fine with it. The book really felt like the beginning of a series to me but there was no indication anywhere that it is so I’m going to assume it was a standalone. And if that is the case then I’m not really happy with how things ended.

Overall I thought it was pretty good. I think it’s best going into thinking of it as an urban fantasy rather than a romance.

Cover: The cover was done by Natasha Snow and I think it is a great cover. It’s super eye catching and fits the story really well. I think this, as well as many covers from this publisher, are top of the genre.

EXCERPT

The knock on my door let me know Christian was waiting on the other side. I stood in front of the door and took a deep, calming breath. Jesus Christ, why was I so nervous? I’m over a century old, why was I acting like some schoolboy meeting his first crush? It was ridiculous. I silently chastised myself for being a dolt and opened the door. Ahhh, there he stood in all his handsome glory. He was looking at me with eyes that held desire and curiosity. There was also a bit of agitation in his expression. Well, let’s see if I could get rid of it and help him focus more on the desire and curiosity he was harboring.

“Come in,” I said, opening the door wider.

He stepped inside, and I closed the door, locking it.

“Okay, I’m here, what did you need to show me that you couldn’t send over the phone?” he asked, getting right to business. Okay, here was the dilemma. Do I show him what I know and risk killing the mood I was setting up, or do I just pounce on him, rock his world, and then show him what I’d discovered? Hmmmm, decisions, decisions.

I decided to make my move. I walked over to him and pushed him into the chair. He fell into it, legs flying up from the impact. I didn’t give him a chance to recover before I was climbing into his lap. I grabbed him by the back of his head and kissed those lips I’d been thinking about all night. I thought he would push me back, but he didn’t… at least not right away. He was kissing me again, giving me that same fire he burned me with in the alley, and I was melting in response.

I felt his arms embrace me as he kissed me harder, more passionately, as if he couldn’t help himself. I caressed his bearded cheek as I relished his tongue in my mouth. Even the taste of him was intoxicating. I wanted him. Just when it was getting extra hot, he must have found the wherewithal to hit the brakes. Like we needed him to do that.

He pushed me off him, and I landed with a hard thud on my ass. His muscular chest heaved as he sucked in deep breaths of air, attempting to gather his senses. He was staring at me now, his gorgeous blue eyes clouded with lust. It was what we both needed, and I wasn’t about to let his hatred of vampires ruin the moment I knew we both wanted.

“What the hell are you doing?” he asked.

“What we both want,” I said then climbed back into his lap and pressed my lips to his again. That time, he didn’t try to push me away. Instead, he began ripping off my shirt, sending buttons flying in every direction. Sure, it was a designer garment, but I was willing to sacrifice it to get Christian in my bed. I helped him take my shirt off me then I leaned back just enough to snatch his jacket and shirt from his body.

Oh yes, sweet baby Jesus, yes! His chest was covered in dark, black hair. Not too thick, but perfect for running my fingers through. That’s just what I did, too. I started from the trail leading to his treasure trove and worked my way up to his nipples, letting my fingers glide through his silky hair and over his smooth skin. I hadn’t been this aroused in I don’t know how long. I sought his lips again because they tasted so damn good. While I was lost in the pleasure of his mouth, I kept my hands firmly on those muscular pecs I’d been wanting to touch since I first saw him.

His hands were all over me, stroking my back until they reached my ass, and he gripped both cheeks, giving them a nice squeeze. I moaned as I broke the kiss and started sucking and licking his neck, making my mark. He was moaning too, and if I didn’t know any better, it would seem he was trying to seduce me to bite him. He turned his head, exposing his neck to me, and his natural scent floated up my nostrils, calling to my hunger. There was something special about the blood of the Institute hunters. The scent of it was more intoxicating than any other being I’d ever smelled. I always wanted to know what it tasted like, and my mouth began to salivate at the possibility.

I wanted to bite him, to taste his essence, the fluid that made his heart beat and his cock hard. I wanted his blood to flow into me just as his semen flowed into me. Soon, my love. I held my fangs in check and only sucked gently at the tender flesh of his neck, just below his beard. I rubbed my cheek against his, enjoying the rough hairs lightly scrubbing my face.
