A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Submission (Deviations #1) by Chris Owen and Jodi Payne and Narrator: Maxx Power

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Noah is a man in need of submission but hasn’t had any luck finding just the right Dom.  He’s had one contract with a Dom who never found anything to praise him about and was heavily into pain, and one contract with a nice guy who committed the cardinal sin of leaving the room while Noah was in bondage.  Though they are still friendly, Noah cannot submit to him.  He’s done scenes with Bradford, owner of the local BDSM club and Bradford recommended him to Tobias, a very experienced Dom who doesn’t currently have a sub.  Noah comes highly recommended to Tobias and vice versa.  This story is about their early months of navigating the waters between Noah’s needs and Tobias’s desires.

While interesting, and with a conflict thrown in by Phan, Tobias’s former sub who seems to be present all the time at the club and is also still friends with Tobias, the audiobook seemed to drag for me during the scenes in which Tobias and Noah did role play.  I think that’s directly due to the fact that it was an audiobook rather than an e-book and the voices narrator Maxx Power gave the two men did not lend themselves to the particular historical scenarios the men chose to role play.  Also, there were a lot of sex scenes and I’m sorry to say that after awhile they became ho-hum so I was somewhat bored by about three quarters through and looking forward to the end.

I would have preferred a deeper, more masculine voice for Tobias—one which matched his body size, real life profession, and role in the BDSM community.  By the same token, Noah is a cop and his soft, almost feminine voice did not fit the description the authors built for him early in the story.  A few obvious mispronunciations also pulled me out of the story—most notably read—pronounced as reed when it should have been pronounced as red.  So I can’t give points for the narration.

Overall, I would like more about the MCs so I may read the other books in the series, but I’m not sold on them yet, and I’m not sure I’d listen to more audio of this series. If you like BDSM with lots of steamy sex scenes, this is a good one to pick, but I can’t recommend the audio version.

~~~
The black-and-white cover art depicts cuffs and a flogger in black tones on a white background.  Looking at future books, it appears this theme is continued with the cover showing a black-and-white picture of a symbol of the BDSM topic.  For example, the next in the series is Bondage and that cover shows a rope.   It’s an effective way to tie the series together.
A Lila Audiobook Review: Well-Tailored: A Thorne and Dash Companion Story by Silvia Violet and Greg Boudreaux (Narrator)
Rating: 4 stars out of 5
Marc longs for a grand romance, but he doubts he’ll ever be that lucky. Then he meets Darius, an arrogant tailor who pushes all his buttons. When Darius offers him a job, Marc hesitates—he needs a direction for the future, not another man who doesn’t believe in relationships.
Darius lives by a few unbreakable rules: never sleep with employees, fashion should be simple, and romance is for fools. Marc, with his shimmery sweater collection, makes him want to break every single one.
They quickly give in to desire, but Darius wants to protect himself and Marc refuses to repeat past mistakes. It’s only when they let go of assumptions, that love has a chance to take hold.
Well-Tailored is a nice addition to the Thorne and Dash trilogy. Marc and Darius played an important role in Thorne’s and Riley’s love story, and now, they return the favor. In this story, we get to see some of the scenes from the previous book from Darius’s and Marc’s perspectives. Both stories run parallel, and as the author mentioned, this book can stand alone, but for maximum enjoyment, it’s better to read them in order.
The MCs’s relationship takes time to develop but their connection it’s easy to see from the very beginning. The author gives us a more in depth view into the events unfolding since their first meeting to the HEA. Most of this we saw from Riley’s POV in Personal Alignment but we get to savor Darius’s and Marc’s faults and dreams this time around.
The combination of Darius’s dominant side and Marc’s eagerness add spice to this story. They worked together well, not only in bed but professionally. They both see the potential in each other and with small details, they take care of the other. They were not looking for a relationship but couldn’t get enough of each other. It’s lovely to see them getting comfortable in their skins and building a space in each other’s’ lives.
The story is well-written and we get to see all the previous characters, plus some new addition.
Greg Boudreaux continues to voice this series seamlessly. The characterizations stay constant, allowing the listener to get back into their world without delay. Their voices are as relevant and their personalities.
The cover by LC Chase goes perfectly with the story and the characters’ descriptions. Also, it matches the Thorne and Dash series covers, but it keeps its individuality.
An Alisa Review: Without A Compass by Helen Juliet
Rating:  4 stars out of 5
Riley Anderson isn’t an outdoorsy guy. He’s a desk jockey, office by day and couch by night. So when his family insists on a camping trip for his father’s 50th birthday he’s hardly thrilled. Things only get worse when Kai shows up, too.
Kai Brandt’s more than eager to go camping with his best buddy, but his buddy’s little brother Riley is all grown up now, and hotter than hell. Kai’s willing to help him pitch more than just a tent… Which is weird, because Kai never swung that way before.
Events conspire to out Riley’s secret AND leave him stranded in Kai’s care for longer than they’d planned for. Trapped together in the wilderness, they’re going to have to face a few hard truths if they’re going to make it back to the world.
But even if they manage it, the experience will leave them forever changed.
This was a lovely story with some great characters.  Riley is determined to give this camping trip his best effort and enjoy himself despite his past experiences.  Kai is excited to get some time outdoors with his best friend, Brendon, and Brenden’s family.
Riley and Kai have known each other for years but at the same time didn’t really know each other with Brendon as a buffer.  Since Riley is the first to arrive after himself and he hasn’t seen him in years, Kai makes it his mission to see that Riley enjoys himself.  I loved that Kai was more than willing to let anyone know about his feelings and not hide Riley away.
I couldn’t help but feel for Riley, he has always felt like an outside with his family and even though he moved to the city he continues to be an outsider with those around him.  My heart broke as we see him not feel worthy of having a real relationship with anyone as no one has ever wanted to try with him.  Kai enjoys being part of a couple but has yet to find anyone who he can really see spending his life with.  As he opens himself up to the possibility of being with Riley he also begins to learn more about himself.
The cover art by Natasha Snow is beautiful and absolutely perfect for this story.
A Caryn Review: Stone by Stone by Stevie Woods
Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
I really love historicals.  But I do think they are challenging to authors, because so much research is required to do them right.  This book, unfortunately, is an example of what happens when you don’t do your research, and don’t truly immerse yourself into the period.
Andrew Cheyne is an assistant to King Henry VIII’s commissioner, traveling to all the Roman Catholic abbeys, monasteries, and other holdings in England to take inventory of their assets, wealth, and workings before they were forcibly turned over to the newly created Church of England.  Andrew is a man who had sex with men; not a man who wanted or even considered a romantic or long term relationship with another man.  While at Tavistock Abbey, he met Brother Mark who was an apprentice mason – and was powerfully physically attracted to him.  It took less than 48 hours for him to seduce Mark, but instead of just relieving a physical urge, he found himself intrigued, to the point that even after he left a day later, he couldn’t quit thinking about Mark.
Despite being soft spoken and gentle, Mark is not as innocent as he initially seemed.  He grew up with privilege, which he took advantage of, gambling and having sex with “men, so many men” until his mother forced him to go on a pilgrimage to Rome.  During that pilgrimage he repented, came to understand that God was his only hope for forgiveness and salvation, and when he returned to England he gave up the family farm and his possessions and entered the monastery.  Where he continued to pray to be relieved of his unnatural lusts.  Andrew was the first man to tempt him since he became a monk, and he gave in to that temptation easily and completely.
All of this occurred in the first 20% of the book.  The two men fell into insta-lust that immediately turned into insta-love, and caused them to completely reverse their previous feelings on relationships.  There is little to no description of how homosexual men behaved or were regarded in sixteenth century England, and I found Andrew and Mark’s relationship to be much more fitting to a contemporary time.  There was only token angst about sin, or illegality, and at a minimum I would have expected that from Mark who supposedly had a real religious conversion earlier in his life.  There were some blatant anachronisms (for instance, when Mark wanted to “converse with Andrew in preference to stuffing his face”), but mostly what bothered me was the way these men spoke and acted like 20th century guys who just happened to meet in a monastery.  There were too many convenient occurrences before and after they met (I knew from the moment she was introduced that Emily would die) and they kept pulling me right out of the book.  Working through the last 80% of the book was a chore, and I got really tired of Andrew whining, and thinking of having sex with Mark.
In the end, I went up from 2 to 2.5 stars because I felt that there was some character growth in the years they were apart, with Mark becoming less of a doormat, and Andrew becoming more appreciative of who Mark was.  But since the entire basis of their relationship seemed to be physical, or Andrew’s admiration of Mark’s artistry, I never really got involved with their romance and was just happy when the book ended.
Cover art by Melody Pond matches the period.
Remember When
Remember When, is all about second…actually, third chances. Nelson and Luke are best friends having grown up living next door to each other. They had big plans and dreams none that include marriage or being tied down and everything to do with the freedom of the road and the rodeo circuit. Problem is, neither have ever been on a horse and at thirteen it’s their parents and a job opportunity across the country that throws a wrench into childhood desires.
I was about thirteen when I decided I was going to spend my life raising horses and hell, maybe I would have even joined the rodeo. I was in awe of the barrel racers. At fourteen, I received my first horse and it didn’t take but one hard winter to have me questioning my dreams.  Like Nelson and Luke, I never joined the rodeo, but plenty of other dreams did come true.
Did you have a childhood dream? Did it come true or did you make new ones as you grew? Leave a comment for your chance to win a $10 Amazon Gift Card.
Good Luck
~Hugs~
Impossibly, fate sees fit to offer them a last opportunity to see what might have been. Will the third time be the charm, or is trust so badly broken it is impossible to repair? Garry’s at the end of his tether. He’s waiting at Glasgow Airport to meet his friend Will, on their way to a holiday in a Scottish Highlands hotel. Now there’s a ten-hour delay to incoming flights, the seat in the lounge is more like an instrument of torture, and he’s beyond tired of airport food.
He’s also dreading having to apologise for the pass he recently made at Will, his colleague at a London bank, under the influence of too many beers and a long-held crush. Now Will’s been offered a new job offer on a continent thousands of miles away, Garry realises it may be the end of their close friendship—let alone anything more.
To add to Garry’s stress, he’s treated to the company of Emily and Max, two young people who think he needs educating in the ways of the world. Struggling with their well-meaning help and the startling mess from spilled ketchup and noxious-smelling sweets, he’s encouraged to re-examine how he feels about Will and to decide what kind of journey he’d really like them to take together.
Excerpt
Garry suspected he knew what tipped psychotics over the edge.
It wasn’t childhood trauma or thwarted world domination. Far from it! It was the agony of a plastic bucket chair digging into the back of your legs in the middle of a chaotic Arrivals lounge. Add to that the robotic monotone of the Glasgow Airport PA system offering “apologies for the inconvenience caused to those customers awaiting incoming flights from the USA,” and it was like salt rubbed into a wound.
He slumped back in the seat, his arms folded tightly across his chest. He could feel the scowl on his face etching into the muscles. There was noise everywhere—booming announcements over the speakers and the incomprehensible swell of people’s excited chatter. Kids shrieked, and suitcases rattled over the threadbare carpet. Rolling neon signs flashed up reminders to boarding gates, constant alerts to keep your bags beside you at all times, and then—almost as an afterthought—the price of the latest, must-have mobile phone package.
Airport lounges had to be one of the least comfortable places on earth. He hunched down farther, trying to nap. Like it’d be possible in this maelstrom. Bad mood, or what? He’d been up since the crack of dawn, maybe even before. He couldn’t exactly remember the time, as over the years he’d found that lack of sleep caused him, one, serious memory problems, two, to leave the house in an unmatched pair of socks, and, three, the unmitigated loss of his sense of humour.
He was jolted back to attention as a man hauling a heavy suitcase let it run over Garry’s feet. With a cry of pain, Garry wrenched his long legs back under his seat, but not before the wheels had left neat little tramlines over his boots. His toes felt bruised, and his mood teetered further toward homicidal. Luckily the perpetrator had taken a sharp left and vanished into the direction of the car hire franchises, else his suitcase—and probably his limbs—might have been scattered to the four winds.
Garry winced. So much for keeping your luggage with you at all times.
So… what was currently on his agenda? A too-early start; a wickedly uncomfortable waiting area; a psychotic bunch of fellow passengers. The bad omens were already stacking up. He’d arrived at Glasgow Airport rather travel-worn from his own flight from London Heathrow, preparing to meet up with his friend Will somewhere in amongst this mess of humanity.
Then he’d been greeted with the worst of news—a delay.
Ten hours? He felt like shouting it aloud, as in fact a few of the less self-disciplined airport visitors already had. What do they mean, incoming flights to Glasgow delayed ten fucking hours? He’d stumbled onto his own flight at some godforsaken hour of the morning to get to Scotland on time, only to find the connecting transatlantic airlines couldn’t meet the same punctuality. Ten hours! It was only late morning. Ten hours would take him on into the evening and a large part of the night. Ten hours of sitting on this seat, with nothing but overpriced airport snacks and the metallic xylophone tones of the airport announcer for company.
Okay, so yes, obviously, he was in a less than good mood.
But he had nowhere else to wait for Will. He couldn’t travel on to the Scottish hotel their mutual friend Allen had booked, because he didn’t know which one it was. Allen didn’t seem to be answering his mobile at the moment. Garry had tried seven times already, ever since the first announcements were made about the delay. And Garry knew that was the only number available, not just because Allen could be such a bloody control freak, but because Leonard—Allen’s husband—never even turned his phone on when he was travelling anywhere. Nor would Will be accessible, circling somewhere in the sky between the States and here. And if Garry left the airport to go anywhere else, he ran the risk of missing Will’s flight altogether. No, he knew he was effectively trapped between the proverbial rock and the hard place. In fact, he could feel the hard place biting into his arse right now, as he tried to get comfortable in his seat for the hundredth time.
Besides, what could he do but wait? He was here because his friend Will had specifically asked him to be.
His best friend, Will.
They were both flying in to Glasgow, ready to meet the rest of the gang. It was a long-held tradition, an annual holiday together in June, whatever their commitments for the rest of the year. Friends since university, there were around eight of them on any year’s trip, depending on who could get away from work. Allen was the self-appointed “manager” of it all, and this year he’d suggested they visit the Scottish Highlands, his own home turf. Garry had happily booked the time off, like he always did. He rarely had other plans that might conflict.
Allen always waxed lyrical about Scotland. Most of his multitudinous family had left the home country over the years, moving all over the world, making what sounded like starry marriages with entrepreneurs and lawyers. Even a Hollywood movie star in one case. But Allen had stayed, happy to find everything he needed right there—including the man he met and moved in with, several years ago. He and Leonard often made the trip north to the Highlands on their own. The hotel they stayed in had a fabulous view over Loch Lomond, and the highest star-ratings for food and comfort. And, this year, Allen and Leonard wanted to share it with their friends as well.
Everyone thought it was a great choice, including Will and Garry. Will in particular had always wanted to see more of Scotland. They both lived in London and spent a lot of their social time together, so they usually travelled the same route to the reunion holiday. This year, they’d arranged to fly to Glasgow, hire a car, then drive the rest of the way.
At least, that had been the original plan.
But the plans had changed, hadn’t they?
A MelanieM Review: Male Bonding by Angela Claire
Rating: 2.75 stars out of 5
Mark Ryan is stabbed in the back by a guy he thought was his friend and is fired from a Fortune 500 company he trusted was his future. He’s not in the mood for any male bonding. Some good hard sex, however, is another matter.
Jamie Wilkes’ real last name is not quite as brand-worthy as Rockefeller, but it’s mighty close. When he wanders by Mark’s mammoth glass beach house and finds the hot corporate titan in residence, he jumps at the chance to get to know his secret crush better. If Mark wants to mistake him for a surfer or a beach bum, Jamie’s fine with that. What he’s not fine with, though, is Mark’s closed-off attitude.
The prince believed to be a pauper and the would-be CEO who’s fallen off the corporate ladder both realize this could finally be their chance at something real.
Male Bonding by Angela Claire is a romance in the “mistaken identity” trope.  Here it’s the bum/surfer who’s really a multimillionaire, a not unfamiliar role seen in books and stories. Jamie Wilkes has been crushing on his handsome older neighbor down the beach but believes he’s hetero until another female neighbor sets him “straight”.  So when he sees Mark Ryan on the worst night of Ryan’s life and the man assumes he’s a beach bum, he lets the assumption stand.
What follows is a confused semi pursuit by each man taking  turns when the other temporarily runs into an emotional wall, or they have a fight, throwing hurtful words at each other.
An early M/F/M scene is altogether unnecessary imo and will have most M/M romance readers putting down the story due to it’s graphic M/F content. It’s also doesn’t make me like Jamie very much.  Mark has just been fired under the worst conditions.  Jamie is lying to him (albeit Mark’s behavior isn’t much above jerk here as well).  But Mark is clearly close to full on depression, Jamie is pushing a threesome onto him, saying he wants to push Mark’s boundaries….and this is a man under enough stress as it is?
Of course, Jamie doesn’t back off, bounding into Mark’s life until it’s a case of instant love.  You can almost guess the rest of the story.  And oh yes, there’s a dog too.
It’s not that it’s a bad story, just a too familiar one that starts with a jarring scene that makes no sense to me if you were setting up a romance between these men.  Perhaps others will feel differently.  I’ll leave that up to you.
Cover art by Natasha Snow is terrific.  Works for both the characters and the storyline.
An Ali Review: My Dark Knight (Kings Of Hell MC #2) by KA Merikan
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Love or hate. Life or death. No inbetween. No compromise. No rules in love and war.
Knight. Party monster. Handsome Savage. Doesn’t do monogamy.
Elliot. Obsessive. Intense. Uncompromising.
Newly single, Knight is done with relationships. All he’s interested in is bringing down The Count, an Internet personality who is tarnishing his family name. An opportunity to crush him comes when the audacious clown shows up at the Kings of Hell MC clubhouse to film for his YouTube channel. But when Knight meets Elliot, the man behind The Count, he no longer knows what to do with him.
Knight has never seen a more pathetic creature than Elliot. He’s also never met anyone who needed him more. Skinny, messed up, and a bucket of trouble as thick as tar, everything Elliot does seems to be a wordless death wish. No matter how much Knight hates Elliot’s alter ego, under the makeup and theatrics hides a fragile young guy with a passion for history, and Knight can’t help but catch Elliot every time he falls.
Elliot has bad taste in men. Always hopelessly attracted to violent brutes, his favorite is a long dead serial killer. But he gets more than he’s bargained for when he seizes an opportunity to meet the man of his dreams. The ghost is manipulative and dangerous, offering Elliot all he’s always wanted, for a price he can’t possibly pay.
Elliot is faced with an impossible choice between two men.
One alive, one dead.
One carnal and honest, one drizzling sweet, poisoned promises into his ear.
One unwilling to commit, the other promising an eternity together.
And Elliot doesn’t settle for half-measures. He craves a love that is all or nothing, passion that will consume him, and desire to burn him alive.
Elliot is ready to either get that, or die trying.
The set up for this book was presented to us at the end of the first book and I wondered how the authors were going to deal with Elliot since he seemed a bit nutty.  I should have known they wouldn’t shy away from the crazy.  I spent the beginning of the story a bit gobsmacked at Elliot’s behavior.  He was in infatuation with a serial killer and I couldn’t quite get my head around his character.  But as the story went on, I found myself feeling sorry for him and then really liking him.  Yes, he was a bit of a mess, but he was also a sweet guy that just needed someone to love him.
I absolutely loved these two together.  They start as adversaries but over the course of the story they become good friends and of course, eventually fall in love.  I really enjoyed their banter and it was entertaining to see Knight have to admit he was falling in love.  By the end I was totally invested in their romance and I felt they were really good together.
The supernatural aspect of the story continues and there were some very interesting twists in regards to this part of the plotline.  I really enjoyed it a lot.  It was pretty fast paced and entertaining.
We see a bunch of the characters from book one and both Laurent and Beast are in this a lot.  The end of this book sets up the third one in the series and I am already eager to get my hands on that one.
This is the second book in the series and I think these should be read in order.  You could follow this easily enough but I think you need to know the back story to really enjoy this one.
I found this completely and totally entertaining and I would definitely recommend it to fans of the series.
Cover:  I really like this cover.  It fits the plot well and is in the same style as the first book in the series.
A very definite love story, this is the story of chef and caterer, Gideon Marks, owner of Garden of Eatin’.  Gideon lands the job he’s been looking forward to when he secures the catering of the function sponsored by the synagogue where he grew up.  He’s been away ten years and is back to prove he’s much more than anyone ever gave him credit for.
Growing up poor and being called stupid by teachers and classmates did nothing to help his self-esteem, but now that he’s a business owner with his best friend, Rico, and has secured this job, he’ll prove he’s more than anyone ever thought.  The thing he doesn’t realize is that the  dyslexia that earned him the “stupid” label as a kid is something that can be treated now and his hurt and resentment, in large part, was more about what he thought people thought of him than what they actually did think.
Case in point, Rabbi Jonah Fine, former classmate and gorgeous man who now seems to be pursuing Gideon for more than just his food.  Apparently Jonah harbored a secret crush on Gideon and never acted on it since he wasn’t out in high school.  But he pursues him strongly now, and together with Jonah, Gideon learns how to love—not just Jonah, but himself, with a dawning self-esteem and a pursuit of therapy for his learning disorder and with communication with his father who had abandoned him in childhood and has come back now to beg forgiveness.  Gideon is the only one on the receiving end of help though.  Not even realizing it, he helps Jonah overcome his own personal hurdles as his father retires and he takes over the role of rabbi at their synagogue.
A very well narrated audiobook, Derrick McClain brings these characters to life with fantastic vocalizations and a well-paced narrative.  The story is sweet and sexy and just what I needed to bring a smile to my face on a gloomy day.
