A Paul B Review: A Scarred Mate (The Werewolves of Manhattan #3) by A.C. Katt

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Scarred mate coverMarc Thierry is the alpha of not only his pack in Northern Minnesota but also the packs of the upper Great Lakes region of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ontario and Manitoba.  As he has recently been appointed third to the North American Garou council, he spends a lot of time traveling between Minnesota and Manhattan.  As the Alpha and second on the North American Garou council have recently found their mates, Marc is forced to spend more time in Manhattan.  So he buys the top three floors of an apartment complex so that he does not have to always stay in hotels.  One day, when his cook has the day off, Marc decides to order delivery from his favorite Chinese restaurant.

Colin Callahan is a graduate student working on his master’s degree.  He also writes gay werewolf romance novels.  As the royalties from these books has just become enough to live on while going to school, he decides to give up his delivery job at the Chinese restaurant he has been working at for the past few years.  As the restaurant nearest his home has closed, he works at the owner’s Manhattan location.  Today is the last day he is working for Mr. Zhou.  He is given an order to take to an apartment a few blocks away.  He makes sure his hoodie is pulled up and takes off on his bike.

When Marc opens the door the door to the delivery guy wearing the hoodie, he realizes that he has finally met his mate.  He invited the delivery guy to join him and his associates (who are actually Marc’s betas) to join them for dinner.  After getting the go ahead from Mr. Zhou, Colin agrees to stay.  When Marc tells Colin to remove his hoodie and get comfortable, the young man hesitates.  When Colin finally does remove his hoodie, the scar he received when he was eleven years old that stretches from his ear down through his cheek is shown.  Marc thinks that the scar is not something to be ashamed about but realizes that it causes his mate discomfort.  Colin meanwhile cannot believe that the three men have not only not mentioned the scar but made no outward reaction to it.  Usually he finds men he is interested in run to the hills when they see his disfigurement.  Does Marc honestly not care about the scar or is he setting him up for a fall later on?  When Marc finds out that Colin is a popular author among werewolves, he hopes that he can prove to Colin that they really do exist and not frighten the skittish man away.

I continue to enjoy the Wolves of Manhattan series.  While the trouble for the human mates in the past has come from running away from organized crime in New York, this time it comes from closer to home.  Unrest from Marc’s pack with the Alpha Bitch (the lead female werewolf in the pack) causes the pair to return to Minnesota sooner than expected.  When Marc declares her a rogue wolf, she vows to get revenge on Marc through Colin.  I really enjoyed how the three alpha mates seem to bond throughout the book.  As they are three men who had no experience with werewolves before their mating, they support each other’s efforts.  I hope when they meet the next mate that he will feel as welcome as Colin has been.

The cover art by Winterheart Design is once again nicely done.  The Manhattan skyline is placed in the lower third.  The upper third has Colin in his hoodie and Marc in a unbuttoned blue dress shirt.  Just above them in the background is Marc’s wolf howling.

Paul’s Paranormal Portfolio ~ My Favorite Non typical Shifters

Pauls Paranormal Portfolio Header

Welcome to another edition of the Paranormal Portfolio.

While Halloween is fast approaching us, I would like to do something a little different.  I would like to discuss my favorite non typical shifters.  These would be those creatures that are not typically written about in shifter stories.  So no wolves, tigers, lions, or bears are in this list.  Dragon shifters have also been excluded.  This is a list of my favorites from books I have read.  So if yours is not in the list, please leave a comment so I can possible find another favorite.

Most of the nontraditional shifters I have found have come basically from two series that I have been reading.  The first is the Midnight Matings series.  This is a collaborative effort of Gabrielle Evans, Joyee Flynn, and Stormy Glenn.  The other series is actually a collection of series that populate Charlie Richard’s Wolves of Stone Ridge universe.  This includes the spin off series of Kontra’s Menagerie, A Paranormal’s Love, and A Loving Nip series.   There are others out there but these will be a good start.

Two shifters that inspire the aww factor are Casey the albino rabbit and Yuma the penguin in Charlie Richard’s universe.  Casey was Swimming with Penguins coverfound at one the labs that the wolves infiltrated and destroyed early in the series.  After being experimented on and losing some leg muscle to the scientists, Casey is deathly afraid of needles.  So naturally Casey’s mate would turn out to be a vampire!  Yuma is penguin shifter who likes to wear eyeliner and frost the tips of his hair.  He acts as the nurse assistant to Kontra’s group even though he is squeamish around blood.  So naturally he passes out when he is accidentally shot by his mate’s father while in his penguin form.

Two of the strangest shifters that I enjoyed also come from the Stone Ridge universe.  Lyle Sullivan is a detective that knows about shifters.  He is kidnapped by the scientists that are plaguing the area.  They perform experiments hoping to create a new type of soldier.  After his rescue by the wolves, the Stone Ridge doctors must complete the experiment to save Lyle’s life.  When he makes his first shift he turns into a monitor lizard.  The other shifter came about from a request to Ms. Giving Perrin Life coverRichards.  Kai Sudderson is swimming in the lake near his cabin when his tail gets stuck in a trap.  Yuma, the penguin shifter, sees Kai struggling and helps out the platypus.

A supporting character I would like to highlight comes from Eden Winter’s Naked Tales.  The story is of a man coming back to the town where his parents lived before they were killed.  He left with his maternal grandmother to live in Chicago afterwards.  HeNaked Tails Cover returns after his paternal grandmother’s passing.  Unbeknownst to Seth McDaniel, the town including is filled with possum shifters.  He is met by what he describes a Valkyrie.  The woman, whom he would find out is named Monica, detests Seth for abandoning his grandmother, especially near the end of her life.  However, when Seth is called upon to lead this town of shifters, it is Monica who trains him in all things possum and shifting to make it possible.

These are just some of the nontraditional shifters that I have enjoyed.  As I read more, I will write a follow up, which will include comments from my fellow reviewers.  If you have any suggestions for alternate forms of shifters that I and fellow readers might be interested in, please feel free to use the comment section.

Excerpt from Everything a Big Bad Wolf Could Want by McKay

He rolled his head to look at Harlan, wanting to make sure he was all right, only to find Harlan lying on his side, looking at him. They gazed at each other in silence for a long moment, then Harlan reached out and stroked Whimsy’s cheek.

“My wolf likes you,” he said, his voice raspy with a strange undercurrent like a growl beneath the surface.

“That’s good, isn’t it?” Whimsy mustered a smile, trying to resist the urge to nuzzle against Harlan’s fingers. That wasn’t his right.

Suddenly, Harlan moved, and Whimsy found himself pinned beneath Harlan’s large, heavy, naked body. “It likes you more’n it likes Barbara.”

This close, Whimsy could see something feral in Harlan’s eyes, as if the wolf hadn’t loosened its grip completely yet, and he wanted to call it forth. He wanted to belong to it, and he was overwhelmed by a desire to show his throat and surrender that he’d never felt with anyone before.

“Maybe that should tell you something,” he said boldly. If he were a noble, self-sacrificing man, he would have extricated himself and encouraged Harlan to think only of his girlfriend, but he wasn’t that noble or self-sacrificing, and he couldn’t bring himself to feel terribly guilty about it at the moment.

“I like women. But there’s something about you, Whims…” Harlan bent his head and ran his nose along the length of Whimsy’s throat as if scenting him, and Whimsy shivered as he tilted his head back.

Whimsy shifted beneath Harlan just enough to seat Harlan’s lean hips in the cradle of his thighs, and Harlan settled there like they were made to fit together. Feeling bolder, Whimsy slid one hand along Harlan’s arm to rest on his shoulder, testing to see what Harlan would allow.

“Liking women doesn’t mean you can’t like men too,” he pointed out. “It’s not an either-or thing for some people. Maybe you like both.”

“Maybe I do. I’ve thought about other men before, including you. I don’t know.” Harlan released a long, slow sigh. “There’s a lotta things I don’t know these days.”

“I know I like you a lot,” Whimsy whispered, sliding his hand to the back of Harlan’s neck and stroking it gently. “I think we could be good together.”

Excerpt

Kyan ran. His legs burned, his chest was tight and the fear that clogged his throat was so completely overwhelming that he just knew at any minute his entire body would give out on him. The heavy rain pelted down hard, and his small stature, with hardly any muscle or bulk of any form, quivered from the strain. He pushed himself through the pain, refusing to give up. The abhorrent idea of allowing the monsters that chased him, to catch up, was the only thing that kept him moving. That, and the small flutter he felt in his stomach. The reminder that he was not only running for his own life, but that of his unborn child’s. Even now, with the small protrusion in his lower abdomen, the thought almost sent him careening off course.

Pregnant! How could a man be pregnant? It just shouldn’t be possible.
Kyan swiped his auburn hair out of his face, so that he could see better. The normally spiky locks hung plastered to his forehead by sweat and rain.

“There he is. Get him!” One of the many voices that had taunted him for the last hour, shouted.
Alarm shot through him when he realized just how close they had gotten to him. A whimper broke free as he darted his way through the thick foliage and branches that stuck out and cut through his skin. He almost lost his footing over a protruding tree root, but luckily he was able to leap at the last moment, landing firmly on his two feet.
Just as he regained his stride, a heavy mass ploughed into his side, sending him careening to the ground. He barely had enough time to twist so as not to fall onto his stomach. His entire frame ached, and all he could do was curl up into a ball, protecting himself and his child as much as possible.

“Please,” he begged. “God, please.”

“Shhh,” came a vicious hiss from above him. Firm hands clamped down hard on him as he attempted to shrug them off. “Do you want them to find us? Keep still and be quiet.”

He froze at the menacing yet familiar voice, and only then became aware that at some stage he must have closed his eyes. Prying them open, Kyan stared at the hulking man above him in shock, confusion and not a little bit of fear.

“Blaise?”

A hand quickly covered his mouth as Blaise growled. “For the love of god, Kyan. Shut. Up.”

A MelanieM Scary Review Redux: Necromancy and You (Guidebook #02) by Missouri Dalton

A Scary Review Redux!

Rating: 5 stars out of 5   ☠☠☠☠☠

Necromancy and You cover full sizeAlter (Al) Skelton is just like  any other 15 year old who is obsessed with death.  He has a purple and black bedroom full of skulls, walls decorated with Day of the Dead posters and a vent where he hides all his copies of Raising the Dead from Cemetery Comics.  Shortly after his 15th birthday, Al sends away for a copy of  Necromancy and You with a coupon out of the back of his Raising the Dead comic along with the box tops from three boxes of Count Chocula cereal. The book he receives in the mail is so much more than he expected.  Instead of a paperback, Al gets a heavy leather bound book addressed to him and immediately his life starts to change dramatically.

From the moment Al starts to read the book, he realizes something is weird.  The spells in the book are working for him as a disastrous incident in his science lab demonstrated.  Al can raise the dead.  Now he’s a boy with a plan and the ability to raise the dead.  That plan? To raise his dead father and get his family back together.  But so many obstacles block his path.  The man his mother is dating is hateful and abusing, too bad he is also Al’s psychiatrist. An evil group called the Coalition operates a school for Necromancers and they will do everything in their power to bring Al into their fold. Suddenly Al’s world is full of ghouls, ghosts, vampires, and talking dead frogs.  What’s a young budding necromancer to do when danger is all around him in a world turned more dark and scary than usual?

Missouri Dalton has created an instant classic for older teens and adults alike with Necromancy and You, the second story in the Guidebook series.  Never have I been so enthralled by a young 15 year old like Al Skelton.  As created by Dalton, Al is a brilliant, depressed social outcast, who lives for his Raising the Dead comics and memories of his old family life.  His father died five years before when Al was 10, an event that happened while his dad was away on business so Al never got to say goodbye. Since then, his mother has turned cold and distant, spending all her time either at work or with her  new boyfriend, a sadistic man who also happens to be Al’s psychiatrist.  With his present life a nightmare, Al would like nothing better than his family back together again, happy and whole, an impossibility considering his dad is dead.  If this description starts to conjure up visions of Harry Potter, then yes, there are similarities.  But for me, I find Al Skelton far more interesting and quite a bit darker.  He is also far more sarcastic and self aware than Harry seemed to be.  But I guess that comes with being a Necromancer. albeit a budding one as well as being a bit of a smartmouth.

Dalton’s narrative is so clever, so enthralling and her main character so charismatic and appealing that the reader is pulled in instantly, immediately hooked on Dalton’s world building and Al’s life. Oh the life of a teenager at 15, it’s such a tough one.  Hormones are raging, poised between child and adult, the world can be a harsh place, especially if that teenager is just a little different from everyone else.  Dalton takes this truism and gives us a darker version.  Al doesn’t just think everyone is out to get him, they really are.  Lonely, upset and missing his father and the way his family used to be? That should sound familiar to any number of kids these days. And if the normal world is scary place for them, what would happen if you then find out that vampires, ghouls, zombies and ghosts are real and you are not quite human?

Lucky for us, we get to find out as Al goes from normal teen to powerful Necromancer and beyond.  This is how it all starts:

When the package arrived, that clear crisp morning on the twenty-third of October, I knew it would be a good day. The package was green, vibrant and shiny, tied with black string. The address label was white with black letters that spelled my name.

Alter Skelton

215 Bridge Lane

Verity, IL 34055

It was a package I’d been waiting for seven weeks and three days. Waiting ever since I mailed in the coupon out of the back of Raising the Dead along with the box tops from three boxes of Count Chocula cereal. The ad had caught my attention immediately, gleaming on the slightly thicker glossy paper of the back cover, in bright green and black and white.

Learn to control the forces of life and death! This book will change your life!

I knew in a heartbeat I would do anything to get my hands on it. So despite my normal tendency toward not eating breakfast, I ate it. I also started to act less strange around my mother to decrease suspicion. And now, on a Saturday morning, I had my book.

I took the parcel immediately to my room. My mother was out shopping, so I had a good couple hours to peruse the book before shoving it behind the vent cover where I kept my issues of Raising the Dead and the pornographic magazine Tommy had foisted on me after his mother started cleaning his room again.

And then later on, once Al is safely in his room:

I cleared the detritus off of my bed, mostly clothes, and unwrapped the parcel.

The book was heavy, and as I tore away the paper, I noticed it was not the paperback copy I’d expected from the photo in the back of the comic. The cover, by the feel, was leather, black. On the very front there was incised decoration: bright green lines indented as a border around a white skull that felt and looked like bone. Over the skull, in silver lettering, was the title.

Necromancy and You!

Underneath the skull was a secondary title. From A to Zombie

There was no author listed. On the interior page was a notation.

And on the next page.

Welcome, young master! You have chosen to take the first step in a wonderful journey! Herein are the methods, practices, and rules of the way of Necromancy! Please read the entire first chapter thoroughly before proceeding to the Practical Applications to ensure safety!

Well. Safety was important. One wouldn’t want to raise anyone on accident or anything. No need to get the neighborhood riled with corpses walking about. Or skeletons. Or both.

No, secrecy was key here.

The neighbors were too nosy as it was. Then again, so was my mother.

And from the moment Al opens the book and begins to read, his journey (and ours) has started.  There is no going back, not that he would want to of course, at least in the beginning. Al has a unique voice, it’s quirky, it self effacing and it definitely belongs to a teenager.  It has just that right amount of young perspective and cluelessness while still sounding aware and confident.  How I love this boy.  Al is also remarkably resilient and he has to be. Because before him are so many unpleasant truths about his world and horrifying events to cope with that the ability to take such things in stride is necessary for his survival.

Along his journey he also meets a cadre of remarkable personalities and creatures, some friend, some foe, and some just well….we just don’t know where they stand.  But all of them are exquisitely created.  They team with life or unlife (!) as the case may be.  Some are personalities that we have met already in Vampirism and You (Guidebook #01), including that m/m couple of foster vampire Duncan and 17 year old Louis.  They loom large in Al’s future but more than that I won’t say.  You will have to discover the details for yourself.  All the characters involved are memorable, some charming, some chilling and several downright evil.  But no matter what side they fall on, good or bad, they are all believable and realistic right down to the smallest detail.

Dalton moves her narrative along at a swift and smooth pace and you will want to scamper along with her, wanting to rush to see where the plot is taking Al and you next.  But slow down, don’t miss any of the details, even the ones that seem so insignificant.  There is so much layering here, of plot twists, relationship dynamics, family dynamics, young love (more on that later), the trials and tribulations of growing up….you name it and Missouri Dalton has incorporated it into her story.  But  Dalton does so effortlessly, her narrative never feeling jumbled up or dense.  Really, this is an outstanding book in a remarkable  series.

There are some things that should be noted. Necromancy and You as well as the Guidebook series are categorized as a YA book, a category I do agree with one limitation.  I don’t feel it is appropriate for anyone under the age of 15 (Al’s age).  While a kiss between the hero and heroine is the sexiest this gets, there are mild suggestive comments for the sexual activities of a few other couples.  Nothing explicit, nothing even major, but its there.  My limitations pertaining to age is more along the lines of the traumatic events that occur.  Al is hurt numerous times and while we are spared the details, it happens and younger children might be upset. People die and there are other potentially violent  scenes.  They are necessary for the book and work beautifully within the narrative.  Most of the violence is “off stage” as it were, but the emotional impact is huge.  These events are as beautifully constructed as the rest of the story so yes, you will feel them just as Al does.  This is an emotionally moving, heartfelt and heartrending story.  It has the power to bring tears to your eyes even as they are rolling down our hero’s face.

In addition to giving us an intrepid young man, Dalton gives us an equally resourceful heroine. This is a minor romance happening within the storyline.  Al is straight and there is a slight romance starting here.  One that I suspect will grow over the course of the series, along with that of our m/m couple Louis and Duncan.  Again, like every other teenage, young love finds a way, no matter your sexual preference.  But this series is geared towards suspense and mystery of the supernatural kind.  The romances that occur are secondary to the main focus of the series,  a battle brewing against good and evil, that eternal conflict with surprising elements to each side.  I wanted to order print copies immediately and go running along crowded sidewalks, passing them out and yelling at them to  “read this book”!!!!!  Teenagers, young adults, old adults, and everyone in between needs to read this book, invest themselves in the series.

As you may have guessed, I enthusiastically recommend this book and this series.  I will leave you with a few thoughts from Al himself:

I just couldn’t take normal life seriously.

“Mr. Skelton, are you paying attention?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Good, then you can complete the problem on the board.”

Do. Not. Kill.

That should not be anyone’s daily mantra.

While it may not be ours, I love that it is Al’s.  Run, fly, do whatever you have to do, but get this book!

Cover art.  I love the cover.  Doesn’t it seem just right for a educational tome?

A MelanieM Review: Diamond Flush: Ace of Diamonds Four by Laura Harner (Pulp Friction 2015: Altered States Book 16)

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5

Diamond Flush coverFor Alpha Jet Gorman, discovering the origins of his pack’s newest members has provided more questions than answers. Like why would someone deliberately expose the existence of supernatural beings to the human world through in vitro fertilization? And more importantly…cui bono? Who benefits most from the Revelation? With the threat of betrayal a constant presence running through the Vieux Carré, at least Jet can count on Nico to have his back.

Ancient vampire Nico Sanzio da Urbino has been given an order to kill a werewolf—not unusual given his job as an enforcer. The problem lies in the fact the targeted Alpha is often in Nico’s bed—or vice versa—and may just be that elusive soul mate he has never quite believed in. Not to mention Jet’s blood fairly sings through Nico’s veins. Caught somewhere between the Paranormal Odd Squad, the all powerful Vampire Council, and a promise to his oldest friend, Nico must make a choice before someone realizes he hasn’t carried out his orders—and takes the matter out of his hands.

With the New Orleans preternatural population continuing to increase at an unnatural rate, the local Alpha and the Odd Squad’s chief enforcer should have their attention focused on maintaining the human-to-super status quo, but with things between them at an incendiary high, their mutual distraction could prove deadly—for everyone.

Heading into the all important fifth book, Laura Harner lines up her angst and mysteries here, her characters waiting to see who will survive the upcoming evil tide of events.  Nico and Jet’s relationship has gotten deeper and richer, despite the fact that both are keeping important secrets from each other.  But Nico’s maybe the most important of them all as he has been ordered to kill the Alpha, who just happens to be his lover and perhaps his soulmate Jet.  Jet also is keeping things hidden from Nico, the worst betrayals seeming only moments away and all blended together with scenes of smoking hot sex.

One of the things I so appreciate about Laura Harner is her ability to balance the elements of  sex, suspense and horror with those of tenderness, love, and angst.  The early scene of Jet and Artie had me in tears.  It was quiet, moving, and a needed reminder of what was at stake for them all.  A gem of a moment among many.

So here we are.  So close to the end.  I have thoughts about where this might go but rarely does that line up with the author’s! This is a superb series as are all the interconnected stories associated with it.  They make a perfect Halloween read, or book choice for anytime of the year.  I highly recommend this for lovers of the supernatural, the paranormal, for M/M romance…it really has it all.

Cover art by Laura Harner.  I think its missing that wonderful sexy aspect of the last cover.  Not my favorite.

The Final Word, Famous Last LInes of Novels and This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

The Final Word Header

The last couple of weeks I have been talking about the first lines in novels.  The ones that pull  you in, set the tone, even lay out some of the plot.  Its so hard to get that all important first line right.  Look how few make it into the top 10, 20 or even top 50 lists.  Not many.  It was even harder to compile our own.  So many first lines had the name of the main character or rambled on or just didn’t do their job.

Now let’s switch to the end of the story.  The last line to be exact. The last lines of novels are the final word. The author may offer resolution (or just more questions). The last line may make us scream in frustration and clap in joy and stare silently in shock. In the end, we take what we can get. Here are a few famous last lines. Notice how many authors and novels also had the most famous first lines. Which of the famous last lines in literature is your favorite?

“Ah Bartleby! Ah humanity!”
– Herman Melville, Bartleby the Scrivener

“Before reaching the final line, however, he had already understood that he would never leave that room, for it was foreseen that the city of mirrors (or mirages) would be wiped out by the wind and exiled from the memory of men at the precise moment when Aureliano Babilonia would finish deciphering the parchments, and that everything written on them was unrepeatable since time immemorial and forever more, because races condemned to one hundred years of solitude did not have a second opportunity on earth.”
Gabriel Garcia Marquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude

“It was the devious-cruising Rachel, that in her retracing search after her missing children, only found another orphan.”
– Herman Melville, Moby-Dick

“The knife came down, missing him by inches, and he took off.”
– Joseph Heller, Catch-22

“So in America when the sun goes down and I sit on the old broken-down river pier watching the long, long skies over New Jersey and sense all that raw land that rolls in one unbelievable huge bulge over to the West Coast, and all that road going, all the people dreaming in the immensity of it, and in Iowa I know by now the children must be crying in the land where they let the children cry, and tonight the stars’ll be out, and don’t you know that God is Pooh Bear? the evening star must be drooping and shedding her sparkler dims on the prairie, which is just before the coming of complete night that blesses the earth, darkens all rivers, cups the peaks and folds the final shore in, and nobody, nobody knows what’s going to happen to anybody besides the forlorn rags of growing old, I think of Dean Moriarty, I even think of Old Dean Moriarty the father we never found, I think of Dean Moriarty.”
– Jack Kerouac, On the Road

“But I reckon I got to light out for the Territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally she’s going to adopt me and sivilize me and I can’t stand it. I been there before.”
– Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

“He loved Big Brother.”
– George Orwell, 1984

“His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.”
– James Joyce, Dubliners, “The Dead”

“I don’t hate it he thought, panting in the cold air, the iron New England dark; I don’t. I don’t! I don’t hate it! I don’t hate it!”
– William Faulkner, Absalom, Absalom!

“Yes, she thought, laying down her brush in extreme fatigue, I have had my vision.”
– Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse

“If I were a younger man, I would write a history of human stupidity; and I would climb to the top of Mount McCabe and lie down on my back with my history for a pillow; and I would take from the ground some of the blue-white poison that makes statues of men; and I would make a statue of myself, lying on my back, grinning horribly, and thumbing my nose at You Know Who.”
– Kurt Vonnegut, Cat’s Cradle

“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.”
– Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Now what famous last lines, no not death lines, last lines of books can you remember?  Yep, a list of those is coming too.  But not this week.  Next up, our up coming schedule.

A MelanieM Review: The Firebird and Other Stories (Beings in Love #5) by R. Cooper

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Being(s) in Love Stories

The Firebird and Other Stories coverMagical creatures known as beings emerged from hiding amid the destruction of the First World War. Since then they’ve lived on the margins of the human world as misunderstood objects of fear and desire. Some are beautiful, others fearsome and powerful. Yet for all their magic and strength, they are as vulnerable as anyone when it comes to matters of the heart.

A firebird in 1930s Paris is drawn to a writer with a haunted past. Upon returning from fighting in the Pacific, a jaguar shifter finds a third-gender human on his doorstep. Early rock ‘n’ roll DJ Hyacinth the fairy shocks his listeners with his admiration for his quiet assistant. During the AIDS crisis, a gruff, leather-wearing troll dreams of a settled life with a mixed-species elf across the bar. An imp, who remembers only too well how cruel the world can be, tells himself he’s content to stay behind the scenes—if only his chaotic, impish magic would stop getting in the way. And a shy human tending his poisonous and carnivorous plants is convinced no one will ever want him, certainly not the handsome werewolf grieving for a lost mate. Human or being, all must overcome fear to reach for love.

I have loved R. Cooper’s imaginative series from the moment I found his story, A Boy and His Dragon, a couple that make an appearance here at the end.  From the magical beings Cooper brings forth looking for romance to the sly, rich, and subtle manner in which the tales are told, R. Cooper’s stories have enchanted me, delighted me and in the case of some of the tales told here, left me more than a little haunted.  Let’s look at them one by one.

The Firebird.  4.5 stars. 1934, Paris, France. Kazimir, a lone firebird, perhaps the last of his kind, sings on the famous stages along side Josephine Baker, in a tragic opera written for him.  He knows little of his kind, only what his previous deceased owners have told him. Now free he sings, then retires to his flat, always filled with people, magical beings, and flowing champagne.  Until a starving ex pat American editor/ writer invades the soiree, with a book he needs to publish and stories he refuses to write.  Rifkin is drawn like everyone to Kazimir.  But now for the first time, the attraction starts to be returned.  But the war is coming, sides are being chosen, and firebirds are immortal, aren’t they?

Such a perfect bittersweet story to set the collection with.  The Firebird will appear again, as well others in this story.  Kazimir has been used, those that want him, who seek to own him often find themselves lost.  What happens when love is finally part of the firebird’s existence?  Quite a story if not exactly a romance.  The threads laid down here appear throughout all the other tales.

The Warrior’s Sacrifice. 5 stars.  1947.  Los Cerros. Mexico? Or Mexico/California combination.   Teo has been taken, beaten, tied up and dumped at the doorstep of the tehuantl—the jaguar, left there as a sacrifice by the neighborhood gang, one of which Teo has just rejected.  Thugs really who never understood Teo, the way he dressed, or acted.  And now it had come to this.  Teo has had a crush on the jaguar for most of his life, even before the jaguar had been sent to fight in the Pacific.  War over, now the Jaguar was back, dangerous and often bloody.  And Teo had been offered as a sacrifice to the one he wanted more than anything. What would the jaguar do?

This is an amazing blend of mythology, culture, and romance. Teo is such a special character, that I hesitate to give him definition here. The jaguar too is a strong, engaging character, one that pulls you towards him because you need the answers to the questions he poses. Combine Teo with mythology come to life in the tehuantl, a warrior back from the Pacific in a vibrant little village, well, this story has so many layers and hidden “notes” that it is one you will want to revisit to again and again to see what you  missed the first time around.  I would change nothing in this story, not even the length.  Unforgettable.

Hyacinth on the Air Rating  3.5 stars.  1961.  Los Cerros Fairy Hyacinth and human Walter work on the air at  a radio station in Los Cerros. Hyacinth has been among the humans for 70 years and still has no regard for human censorship, especially on the air.  Something he can often get away with just a small fine as a fairy but poor Walter could lose his job over.  And Hyacinth does find Walter so very attractive, even if that’s something he’s also not supposed to notice.  Strange humans!   But once Hyacinth realizes Walter is noticing right back, all bets are off!  Its sexy, kinky and even sweet. Its  light-hearted and whimsical tone  sometimes worked against other elements of the story of gay rights to take away its power.

I liked the bending of history here. They are talking about “the war”, and other 60’s facts like Lee Dorsey music but  with all sorts of twists and turns.  I like it but when put along side some of these other stories it just pales by comparison.

A Giant Among Men. Rating  4 stars out of 5.  1982.  Los Cerros.  Tank, a troll with his Viet Nam MIAs/POWs Never Forget and Love Is A Many-Gendered Thing pins on his lapel, is a lovely character. Tank is his own neighborhood watch, but Mami Wata’s a  neighborhood bar is a special place because of Simon.  Tank’s in love with Simon, the bartender.  Simon, best described as elf and ?.  Delightful Simon was a bit more of a question mark but intentionally so.  They made a great couple in the end and I would love to have seen this story expanded.

The story basics are recognizable but the manner in which R. Cooper has folded a AIDs like virus into this story, a similar fear environment infecting the country, it all feels so very relevant.   R. Cooper’s touches to indicate the 80’s vibe which includes mentions of the movies about a murderous fog were just terrific.

The Imp and Mr Sunshine.  Rating: 4 stars out of 5  2005.  Los Cerros.   Rennet (the child imp from The Firebird) is now grown and Los Cerros is a liberal city seeming to embrace its magical beings.  That includes trying to see imps as  something less demonical, and more as beings to be accepted, like fairies and elves.  What Rennet likes, or moreover loves is John Summers, the deputy mayor “The Incredible Unflappable Mr. Sunshine” who he sometimes does odd jobs for.  What follows is a tale of a closeted politician coming out of the closet in his love for an imp.  Its charming, Rennet is endearing and the reader will have no problem connecting with the romance and the characters.

The Wolf in the Garden. Rating 4.5 stars out of 5.  2014 Los Cerros.  Miki (who has a definite connection to the Firebird).  Miki is a gardener who the reader will adore.  Miki grows the plants needed for sale in Cassandra’s magic shop.  The gardens and greenhouses exist behind the shop and they are Miki’s domain, the plants are Miki’s companions and confidants.  The reason behind Miki’s shyness are easily guessed at,and  his gentleness and huge heart bring the reader easily over to his side.  Then Diego the werewolf arrives, mourning, dying of loss and a shocking thing occurs.

Again, what an amazing story.  It moves with an awareness of the fragility of life, how easily things change, along with the need to accept new paths when they open up before you.  For a story that contains so much pain, it is also full of hope and sweetness.  I loved it.  And would love to see more of this couple down the line.

The Dragon’s Egg.  4.5 stars out of 5.  Present.  Bertie the Dragon and his Arthur are back from A Boy and His Dragon.  The egg appears after a night of passion.  More than that I will not say.  I fell back into their relationship easily, and loved seeing where the two had  progressed since last time I had seen them.

But for those unfamiliar with their story, this might be a little problematic.  A Boy and His Dragon built Bertie and Arthur’s relationship with great care, its foundation that of Arthur’s abandonment and ill treatment as well as Bertie’s love for his Boy.  Without that background, someone new to their history and story might flounder a bit, which would be a shame, because this is a darn good story.  Tender, emotionally revealing, and deep as R. Cooper’s stories tend to be.   That ending was priceless, and of course, it made me want more.

From a story full of fear and despair to one that ends on such promise and love, R. Cooper takes us on a incredible journey with The Firebird and Other Stories, its one you won’t want to miss.   Pick it  up and being your magical voyage today.  I highly recommend this collection and the other  Beings in Love stories.

Cover artist: Paul Richmond.  I love the cover,  Vibrant, unusual, but I wish the Firebird had more of the story elements.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing M.A. Church author of Behind the Eight Ball. Hi Michelle, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us your writing goals for this year.

Hmm. Since this year is about over, let’s start with 2016. I plan to have at least two books coming out from ARe.

The third book in the Fur, Fangs, and Felines series hopefully will be coming out in 2016. This book will be about Remi and his mate.

I also plan to continue The Harvest series books. These will be about the young, and the first book in the series will be about Szin.

I’m going to try my hand at a contemporary novella. Depending on how well that goes, I may do several contemporary short stories. I have a couple ideas on that too.

I’m also itching to write the complete story from a sci-fi flash I entered in the Queer sci-fi contest in 2015. It has to do with an enchanted mirror.

And that’s what I have planned, LOL. Who knows what may pop up between now and then?

Blurb

A cool morning, a yard full of birds, and a kitty on a mission. What more could a werecat want? Beta Heller Wirth has it all, except a mate—a shifter mate, that is. The last thing he wants is one of those dangerous humans who kill without remorse. Heller knows about that firsthand. So what does the goddess Bast do? She gives Heller exactly what he does not want—a human: business owner Lawson Dupre.

Lawson hasn’t a clue what just happened in his car detail shop. One minute a cute client is about to pass out, then he perks up and starts flirting. Next thing, he runs out the door like the hounds of hell are after him. Learning that Heller is a werecat doesn’t freak out Lawson. He happens to be one of those rare humans who knows paranormals exists. He even lives with one. Watch the fur fly as Heller and Lawson battle hurt feelings, misguided beliefs, and a power shift in Heller’s clowder.

Step.

Step.

Stop.

The rustling of dead leaves caught my attention, and I froze with one paw still in the air. Not moving and barely daring to breathe, I waited. My whiskers twitched as a cool October breeze disturbed the scent of decaying leaves and rich soil. The foliage trembled again as something rooted around.

I slowly lowered my paw. The disturbance wasn’t very noticeable except to my predatory gaze. The movement continued. Gradually, bit by bit, I crept forward, making sure my long fur didn’t disturb the surrounding mounds of dying leaves. It was times like these I wished my coat were short like Dolf’s. One thing was for sure—whatever was below those leaves was going to be mine shortly. All I needed was to cover a little more distance and I’d be close enough.

Step.

Step.

Crouch.

Heart thumping, I watched as the movement continued. My muscles tightened and my bottom started wiggling. Unable to wait, I sprang forward, claws extended. Leaves flew into the air as I landed on my target. Bugs scattered. Eyes narrowed, I searched for…. There! There was the little bugger. I growled at the big black beetle and trapped it with my paw.

Seconds passed. The bug wiggled under my paw, tickling me. Hunched down, I carefully lifted my paw and peeked. Dammit, can’t see. Unable to get a good look, I lifted my paw a little higher… and there it went, scuttling across the ground. Gleefully I slammed a paw down, trying to trap it. Slap. Slap. Slap. Arrgh! What’s the deal? I keep missing.

Looked like I’d found myself in a game of whack-a-mole, except with a beetle. And off we went. The bug scurried away with me hot on its trail. Every time I thought I had a paw on it, I ended up missing. Stupid critter was fast. I bounded along behind as it raced across the ground. Then it suddenly cut back and ran straight under me.

Surprised, I leaped in the air, all four paws coming off the ground. Whoa! Zigged when I should have zagged. I landed and nonchalantly licked a paw. Hope no one saw that. I had to give the bug credit. That was a smart move. The shrill cry of a mockingbird caught my attention. I lifted my head, searching for the little tattletale.

Up in a tree it sat, its warning cries echoing around the yard. I eyed the tree. Hmm, I could climb it, but the stupid bird will probably just take off. Still, might be fun. Maybe after I finished playing with the bug… and damn. The bug.

My attention returned to where it had been, my tail slashing. Great. Lost it. Stupid bird. I sat up and threw a glare over my shoulder at the bird. Standing, I turned my back to the little menace, tail held high. That’s what I think of you, buddy. I prowled around for a while, sniffing, enjoying the coolness of the morning.

In the early morning sunlight, the dew on the grass sparkled like diamonds. Maybe it was pretty, but the stuff was also cold and wet against my paws. I was glad for my fur. As I wandered back toward the house, my stomach growled. I was hungry and… I sniffed. Oh, was that a blue jay I smelled? Oh, oh, a blue jay. Yum.

The human side of me groaned, but the kitty part wanted to jump with joy. The noisy little shits were actually quite intelligent. Catching one was always a feat. Quick as I could, I hid in the bright fall foliage by the back porch. I stayed very, very still so the stupid bird three feet from me didn’t fly off in a panic.

I licked my lips, my whiskers twitching as I watched the little rascal across from me raise its head. Shit, shit, shit. What caught its attention? Come on already. It’s all fine, nothing to worry about here. No cat hanging around. Just go back to pecking around on the ground. Everything’s good. See? I’m not moving, not even breathing.

Crouched low, I waited while my breakfast relaxed and returned to looking for acorns. Other birds came and went, but I refused to get distracted. I knew the one I wanted. Inch by agonizing inch, I crept closer to my prey. My mouth watered and my heart thumped.

The chatter of the birds around me was easy and relaxed, no distress calls sounding. That’s right. Just keep on eating. Soon I’m going to be eating you. My body tensed, back legs ready to spring me into action….

And the phone in the house rang.

Meet the Author

M.A. Church is a true Southern belle who spent many years in the elementary education sector. Now she spends her days lost in fantasy worlds, arguing with hardheaded aliens on far-off planets, herding her numerous shifters, or trying to tempt her country boys away from their fishing poles. It’s a full time job, but hey, someone’s gotta do it!

When not writing, she’s exploring the latest M/M novel to hit the market, watching her beloved Steelers, or sitting glued to HGTV. That’s if she’s not on the back porch tending to the demanding wildlife around the pond in the backyard. The ducks are very outspoken. She’s married to her high school sweetheart, and they have two children.

My Author Interview with Victoria Sue

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Victoria Sue,  author of ‘Eternal Circle’.  Hi, Victoria, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

  • Where do you find your inspiration?

I wrote Orion’s Circle after seeing a photo of four happy guys. I wanted to make a world where they could be in love.

  • When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I think anyone can be a writer – you don’t specify “published” writer. I was a writer as a child, loved it. Then life happened, and thirty years later I became one again.

  • Do your characters become like real people to you?

No, to be honest I don’t have that much control over real people. (I wish)

  • If you weren’t a writer, what else would you like to have done?

I’m a mom, a wife. I have been a nurse and worked in a school. Job-wise there is nothing else I would have chosen. My one regret was that I didn’t start writing again ten years ago.

  • What do you want your tombstone to say?

I don’t want one. I don’t want a place that my children have to feel guilty if they don’t visit it, and I don’t want remembering like that. I already told them, I want a kick-ass party and then they can scatter my ashes somewhere I was happy. (Although the local library might object to the mess)

Eternal Circle – extracts

According to legend the goddess Sirius gifted humankind with powerful werewolf shifters, to bring balance and peace to the planet that both species called home – Earth.
The great god Orion was pleased with his wife’s final efforts, and the werewolves he allowed to be created showed such equal amounts of strength and compassion that humans were awed and showed their gratitude by adding a full five feast days to their calendar to commemorate them. The days were named after the five oldest gods: Osiris, Heru, Set, Isis, and Nephthys.
But one god was jealous. Anubis had worked tirelessly for years weighing the hearts of the dead for their goodness, and granting the dead passage into heaven or escorting them to hell. He was incensed that the ungrateful humans didn’t show him proper homage, and decided to sabotage the plans that Sirius had made.
He couldn’t stop Sirius’ creation but decided that some of the wolves would be given the gifts that the dead laid at Anubis’ feet, as a way for them to barter their fate. These were special attributes, the ones that enabled humans to navigate their way to hell, and the ones that wolves weren’t naturally born with.
Anubis sat back after his efforts and smiled. For every wolf and human born with strength and compassion, there would be one born with hate, greed, and jealousy. Some strong, some weak. Mostly the gifts of strength and compassion would win, but every so often a wolf would find hate, and greed, and grow strong and powerful with it. Anubis had cunning and had to do this out of sight of Orion. The great god just had his wife, Sirius, returned to him, and Anubis could not do anything that would risk his wrath. No, he had to work stealthily, as if Sirius’ creation had gone bad all on its own and he had no hand in it. Anubis watched as the gods all agreed there could be no more interference in human lives and he smiled. His own creations would bring down the werewolves and they would infect others. Anubis had patience and could wait for those days, for they would be glorious.

Extract Two
It was stunning. Even though his vision was black and grey, the world looked sharper, cleaner. Aden felt the soft touch of Darric’s wolf in his mind, and felt the love swirl around him. The other, bigger, black Alpha- marked wolf stood beside him, Blaze’s massive head swinging cautiously to one side, scenting for possible danger. Always on the lookout, always in full-on protective mode. Aden whined and lowered himself down. Blaze was making him rest. Memories clawed at him, hurt, and he tried to push them away. This. This was when Aden felt truly, irrevocably free. As a wolf he wasn’t small and scarred. Pathetic, abused, and beaten.
He felt a nudge against his side. Blaze’s wolf came and stood close, gently brushed his snout along the grey fur on Aden’s round belly protectively. No, that wasn’t fair. He was none of those things now, even as a human. Aden tucked his paws under him and panted. He knew Blaze was urging him to go home. They had agreed on the advice of the doctor that this was the last time he would shift before the baby was born. He’d known it was a risk, and not something the she-wolves did at all, but this was when he felt the most connection to his lover.
This was the one time Darric had never died. The time before that beautiful body had been laid finally to rest and gone to Sirius. He knew Darric would be with Sirius until it was finally time for Aden to join him, and it wasn’t as if he was in a rush to die, but these moments as a wolf were all he had left of his silver-haired, beautiful mate, and he wanted to hold on for just a few seconds longer.
Sometimes Aden wanted to disappear in his wolf and never come back.

Meet the Author

Has loved books for as long as she can remember. Books were always what pocket money went on and what usually Father Christmas brought. When she ran out of her kids’ adventure stories, she would go raid her mom’s. By the age of eight she was devouring classics like Little Women, and fell in love with love stories.
She’s still in love with them. Any size, any shape, any creature – love is love, no matter what it says on the box.
In fact if they don’t fit very neatly into any box she loves them even more!
She has a very patient husband and three wonderful children. In 2010 in search of adventure they all moved from the UK to the US and are happily settled in Florida. Finally, after reading love stories for so long, she decided to write her own.
