A MelanieM Release Day Review: Seven-Card Stud (Wild Cards #2) by Ava Drake

Rating: 2.75 to 3 stars out of 5

seven-card-stud-by-ava-drakeTemptation, peril, and dirty poker.

Love is a high-stakes game.

When Collin Callahan, British secret agent, goes up against math genius turned surfer bum Oliver Elliot, the battle is epic—and so is the attraction. They’re pitted against each other in an exclusive, ultra-secret—and ultra-illegal—poker match in Gibraltar, but when players start dying and they could be next, they find a common goal: catch the killer before it’s too late.

Evenly matched at poker and romance, they each wrestle personal demons that threaten to consume them as the stakes climb. It’s an all-or-nothing gamble with both life and love on the line as they fight to be the last seven-card studs standing.

Seven-Card Stud (Wild Cards #2) by Ava Drake is one of the few misses in the Dreamspun Desires series that I have come to enjoy so much.  I thought Ace in the Hole, Ava Drake’s first story in the Wild Cards series, a real winner.  Loved the characters, thought the plot was a great mix of intrigue and romance.  I recommended it to all.

But Seven-Card Stud? Unfortunately not.

I did like some of the elements of intrigue and wish the author had developed them more.  The assasins and their identities? That was a neat imaginative twist and one I wish had seen more time and play here to see it through to the end.  Because it vanished as though the author hadn’t even bothered to build it up in the story as much as she had.  Just snipped out.   Other characters and plot threads weave in and out just as quickly.  I will admit, there’s more to this story but if you set all this many elements in motion, I expect to see it all carried out to some conclusion.  Any conclusion.  And that didn’t happen here.

Even the characters were problematic for me.  Collin and Oliver. Oliver and Collin. I couldn’t keep them straight.  Who was the british American?  Who was the other guy? Really they blended together and early on at that. So not good in a romance.  I never did get invested in their relationship.

What did I like?  The whole gambling scene.  The descriptions of the tells, the poker play, the intensity at the table.  That was so well done.  Those descriptions were vivid, believable, and made the reader feel as though they were  looking over the shoulders of the high stakes gamblers betting away millions.  Then it got bogged down by the intrigue and the silliness and that was lost as well.

I wish I could say it all ended well but it is more of a cliffhanger or at least ends where you expect the next novel to start.  There is no real ending.  Where the first story could be a standalone novel, this one definitely expects you to read the one coming after it.  Be forewarned.  It expects a commitment from you that I’m not so sure you will want to make.  Its up to you.

Yes, I was disappointed.  Here is one Dreamspun Desire that I would let slip away.  Wait for the next to come along.  Or read Ava Drake’s first Wild Cards story. I still recommend that one.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is wonderful.  It has all the elements needed and then some.  Love it.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: Seven-Card Stud (Wild Cards #2) by Ava Drake

have mixed feelings about this story.  On the one hand it was much more complex than most of the others I’ve read in the Dreamspun Desires series.  There was more intrigue, more danger, and less of a chance to guess the outcome, but on the other hand, unfortunately, there was less romance. There was sex, and some of it smoking hot, but the MCs constantly bantered back and forth, sometimes sounding as if they were speaking truthfully when what they had to say wasn’t what I’d expect from two men falling for each other.

And there was more info about poker—how to play, how to bluff, how to read tells, etc. than I ever cared to know.  Some of the things that occurred as the story was coming to a climax didn’t make sense to me. Things such as Collin’s wireless being jammed, and yet, the next day it’s revealed how Oliver contacted (spoiler) to communicate urgent information.  Why was his wireless not knocked out as well?  Little things like that drive me crazy.

And the fact that the story did not have what a purist romantic like me would call a HEA?  Nope.  I’m not happy.  So although I’d recommend it to those who can’t resist the Dreamspun Desires series, I’d more likely recommend it to someone who wants to read a story filled with intrigue than to someone looking for a sweet romance.

Hi, everyone! I want to thank Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for having me on the blog. A Chance for Us: New Vampire Justice is book 2 in the series. Dare to Love Forever is the first. Read about New Vampire Justice and an excerpt and then enter the giveaway.

I hope you enjoy this peek at A Chance for Us. Check in at www.jakecwallace.com for more information.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

New Vampire Justice is the law enforcement agency tasked with policing vampires in a world where humans know vampires exist. Vampires aren’t the superhuman, preternatural creatures portrayed by popular media, legends and stories. Vampires are a result of evolution, essentially human but with a need for certain blood proteins in order to survive. Human blood is not necessary due to the advent of synthetic blood. Biting is illegal, except in highly-policed specialized clubs. Vampires are no threat to the Nons (non-vampires).

Despite living and working among the Nons, vampires are third class citizens. They are targets of violence, discrimination, and are viewed by some as less than human. Vampires want equal rights, the same rights as Nons. But not all vampires want equality. Some vampires feel theirs is the dominate race and they should possess the power of the Nons. Their attempts to gain this power increases the tensions between the races. Amid this chaos, the officers of NVJ must keep the peace between vampires and humans, a fight becoming more impossible by the day.

Book 1 starts the series with Carson and Lincoln’s story. Book 1 should be read first to understand the events happening in Book 2 with Justin and Max’s story.

Happy Reading!

Love between a young man with a broken mind and the jaded New Vampire Justice officer who cares for him might be the last hope to stop a human-vampire war….

Justin Masters is stuck in a nightmare. Waking after seven years in a catatonic state, he falls desperately in love with the straight NVJ officer who saved him. Between that and dreams of being tortured and taking pleasure in the pain, which bleed into his waking hours, Justin’s sure he’s starting to crack.

The growing unrest in the vampire world should be Max Kincaid’s focus, but Justin’s struggle, along with Max’s confusing feelings for his ward, have him reeling. When Justin’s attacked, his resulting needs might be more than Max can fulfill, but he’ll be damned if anyone else will touch Justin.

As the NVJ investigates humans missing from a high-end bite club, they uncover a deeper plot that traces back to Justin. If those who want him have their way, there will be bloodshed. Justin and Max are in a fight to save Justin not only from those who would use him, but from his own mind.

Excerpts

Justin

Justin gasped in a breath. Fuck, he’d done it again. Max would be pissed when he got there. And he’d come because he was the only one who could help. Then he’d see that Justin had gotten lost in his head again, lost in the nightmares of his past. Max would want to know why he hadn’t used the techniques from his therapist Walt. Justin grunted. They never worked. But it didn’t matter. He was too far gone to get back on his own. At that point, only physical pain or being wrapped up, practically restrained until he couldn’t move, would center him and bring back to reality.

Great, there was Doc talking with Carson. Doc’s solutions always came in the form of a needle. Drug him. Justin banged his forehead against his knees. Maybe he could bang hard enough to knock himself out, or maybe have a stroke and become a vegetable like Tommy Dennison upstairs. Then Max wouldn’t be burdened with a dependent head case. Max was always pushing Justin to be more independent, rely on himself more. Max, who’d rescued Justin, taken him in, held him whenever he thought he’d shake apart, helped as Justin relearned to take care of himself, his cooking, his laundry, and, hell, even to go outside without falling to pieces. Max’s bid to stop Justin from relying on him was like a knife to his chest.

Justin had fallen in love with Max. Max who was caring, attentive, unflappable. Justin had fallen in love with his crooked grin, his wavy blond hair with the sides that always escaped his ponytail, the way his glasses were always askew, his quiet and contemplative demeanor. Justin believed Max didn’t see a potential lover in him, but a needy little brother. Despite being only two years younger than Max, Justin was still that sixteen-year-old, but now in a man’s body. He couldn’t make it through a day without somehow clinging to Max. What kind of life was that for a straight man who wasn’t even related to Justin?

His chest tightened and pushed his rate of breathing higher. Something horrible was going to happen, and it wouldn’t be his own death as he hoped. He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, and was going to lose it big-time. Again.

Max

Max pulled off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. If a minute went by that he didn’t worry about Justin, it would be a fucking miracle. In the past five months, Justin had made incredible strides in emerging from a body on autopilot. God, it seemed like a lifetime ago Max’s team had been ambushed by Jameson Merrick while on a retrieval mission for Justin. Shoved alone, or what he thought was alone, into a small cinderblock room, Max had found Justin. While he’d aged from pictures Max had seen, Max knew it was him. But he hadn’t been prepared for the state Justin was in.

Justin’s greenish-hazel eyes, dull and lifeless, had stared out into nothing. No emotion. No sign his mind was even in the room. If not for breathing, he could have been mistaken for a statue. A very handsome statue with his creamy skin, freckles dotting his nose and cheeks, which matched his sandy-red hair, and slim body.

Even though Justin wouldn’t respond, Max had spoken about anything and everything, anything to drown out the quiet. At night when the temperature dropped, Max held Justin close to his side, sharing warmth to stop Justin from shivering. Even when night ended, Max still held him, as Justin rested his head on Max’s shoulder. Eventually he had looked up at Max. That’s when he’d caught the cognizance in Justin’s eyes. Hearing Max say his name had brought a frown to Justin’s face that quickly faded. Justin had snuggled in closer and placed his hand on Max’s chest.

Max recalled how that gentle touch had caused his heart to skip a beat. Even then that memory stirred something inside.

Carson Locke is dangerous, even by vampire standards. A rare Tabula Rasa vampire, he can wipe the mind of those he bites—human or vampire. Because of this, he’s lived his entire life in isolation. When his family is murdered, Carson runs from those who want him dead. Injured, starving, and about to be executed, he meets Commander Lincoln Samuels, an officer in the New Vampire Justice police force.

Lincoln, a Sanatore vampire, possesses the gift of healing. The moment he encounters Carson, broken and terrified, trying to steal blood to survive, he is compelled to help the other man—despite the risk to himself. Their bond creates something the world has never seen, but others have plans for Carson, and his destiny was written long before he was born. He’ll either become a tool to control the vampire world, or, with Lincoln by his side, find the courage to fight and become its savior.

Excerpt

…Lincoln nudged the kid’s knee with the toe of his boot. The suspect flinched but didn’t look up. Lincoln crouched and lowered his voice. “Hey, kid. What’s your name?”

Every muscle in the too-thin body shook. There was no answer. From the scream he’d let loose, Lincoln surmised he could talk. He touched the kid’s shoulder. Still he didn’t move, but his shaking ramped up a couple of notches.

“I’m not going to hurt you. You’re safe now.” Lincoln turned to his officers behind him. Of course Dennison was the only one with his gun still drawn. “Holster your weapon, Dennison.”

Dennison hesitated, not bothering to hide his disdain. Lincoln raised his brow. Dennison huffed, then did as he was ordered. Lincoln turned back to the kid. “The guns are put away.”

The kid raised his chin and cocked his head, peering past the dark hair covering his eyes. Large brown eyes, filled with despair, sucker punched Lincoln in the gut. He surveyed the vampire’s sharp cheekbones and jawline, sunken eyes and hollowed cheeks, and… the reddest lips that contrasted with his pale skin. Blood rushed to Lincoln’s groin, and his cock pressed against his jeans. Shit, it was forever since he’d gotten hard on sight. A warm mouth on his dick was generally required before anything stirred below—the hazards of a fuckton of one-night stands and a dead heart.

Damn.

“When was the last time you ate?”

The young vampire stared at Lincoln, and then, as if he’d decided to trust him, answered. “T-ten days ago.”

After ten days the kid should have been attacking every vein in sight, even if he’d never drank straight from a human. He had a shitload of self-control, especially with blood pooling on the floor next to him.

Lincoln looked to Max, who didn’t need for Lincoln to tell him how dire the situation was. He released the kid. He swayed but stayed upright. Max pulled off his jacket and rolled up his sleeve. It was dangerous to allow a starving vampire near a vein, but someone had to feed the kid right then. Lincoln couldn’t be the donor, even if he wanted. He’d have to make sure the guy didn’t drain Max. Of everyone on his team, Max was the most levelheaded. No doubt he was the one who called in the level-one situation. Lincoln trusted Max with his life, and vice versa.

Lincoln tentatively set his hand on the vampire’s shoulder. Power, immense and nearly uncontained, emanated from the kid, unlike anything Lincoln had ever felt. His cock hardened further. Those brown eyes. Fuck.

Lincoln cleared his throat. “I’m sure I don’t have to explain the effects of blood deprivation on a vampire. You’re already past the point where synthesized blood will help.”

The kid’s brown eyes widened, and he shook his head violently. “N-no. I can’t!”

That fear came from only drinking blood from a cup his entire life. Didn’t mean he couldn’t drink from the vein. The thought terrified most vampires who’d never sank their fangs into flesh. Lincoln recalled his first bite at a certified bite club his uncle brought him to. He was sixteen. Humans desiring the bite were able to meet vampires who wanted to drink their blood. Lincoln had been scared shitless. The wrong placement of fangs or sudden jerk of the donor could severely injure the Non and possibly kill them.

For Lincoln, drinking from a human woke some primordial, anamalistic need. The human blood was like an aphrodisiac. Without even taking his cock out of his pants, he’d orgasmed, same as the Non guy he chose. That first bite unearthed a need Lincoln was unable to ignore, bringing him back to the clubs every couple of months.

“I know you’ve probably never done this before, but it’s not that hard. Feel for the pulse with your tongue. That’s where you want to place your fangs. Bite down firmly, but don’t go too fast. Stop once the blood starts to pool on the skin. Pull out and suck.”

Restless movements from his team told Lincoln they’d probably never seen a vampire bite someone as well.

“You’re going to feed him? What the fuck? He broke the law!”

Leave it to Dennison to object. Lincoln clenched his jaw and ignored the rant. Max raised his wrist to the kid’s mouth, but his reaction surpassed fear alone. He yanked against the hands holding him. Terror-filled eyes were glued to Max’s wrist. A war of need and fear raged in the depths of the kid’s eyes.

“I can’t! Get away from me!” The kid gasped and fought for breath as if some horrible monster stalked toward him. “You… d-don’t… under… s-stand!” His adrenaline-fueled state increased his strength as he tried to escape the wrist before him. He was going to hurt himself.

His useless fight annoyed Lincoln. “Calm down, kid! No one’s going to hurt you.”

“Put him out of his misery,” Dennison muttered.

The vampire’s struggle ceased as his entire body stiffened. His eyes flashed white as they rolled up into his head. He slumped forward and was out cold.

“Dammit, lower him to the floor.”

Max and Taylor laid the kid on his stomach. That’s when Lincoln saw the symbol tattooed at the base of his spine.

“Fuck me!”

Things had gone from bad to worse in a split second.

An Alisa Release Day Review: Trust and Control by Remmy Duchene

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

trust-and-control-by-remmy-ducheneWealthy real estate mogul Christophe Lafavre has everything—except any love life to speak of. Though he has a brilliant head for business, when it comes to relationships, he’s often left fumbling in the dark.

To put a stop to the whispers about his pitiful social life, Christophe takes a suggestion from a friend and goes to a club on masquerade night. There, he meets an elusive hottie who calls himself Raj, and though Christophe cannot see Raj’s face, there’s definitely a connection. Over the phone and online, Christophe and Raj get to know each other. Their conversation is easy and arousing. It’s hard for Christophe to believe the strength of the feelings he’s developing toward a man who is still essentially a stranger, but he can’t get Raj out of his head. They eventually give in to their physical longing—but still Raj refuses to show his face or divulge his identity.

When it comes, the revelation will rock Christophe’s world and redefine more than one relationship in his life.

I enjoyed this story.  I will say upfront, if others had the same thoughts I did, this book isn’t as heavy in BDSM as I thought it would be.  To me is just seemed like it was playing in the bedroom, which is fine, just not what I expected.  Christophe has never had a romantic relationship that ended well, heck he hasn’t been with anyone for years just to protect himself.  Jaswant has been Christophe’s best friend forever and has been in love with him for the same amount of time, he fears revealing his feelings will ruin their friendship.

Chris is completely confused when he meets Raj at the masquerade night; he is scared of his own reaction to the man.  While he learns a bit more about Raj he continues to think there is something familiar about him, but can’t place his finger on it.  When Chris runs away from Jas they both feel that there may be no way to fix their relationship.

I could feel Chris’s confusion and Jas’s heart break at their interactions.  When Jas disappears, just when Chris decides they can work it out, Chris goes to the one place he knows Jas would run to.  Chris pursues Jas, but continues to doubt.  The thing about that that bugged me was that Chris’s doubt’s never seemed to change and he always calls his brother to talk him through it.  I just had a hard time believing that Chris would continue to doubt after everything him and Jas went through.  At the same time Jas can’t believe it’s real either until Chris can finally say those three special words.  Overall though I enjoyed this story.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have J.R. Loveless here today. J.R. agree to answer some questions for us and here’s terrific interview that resulted. Welcome, J.R.

~

Hi, good morning/afternoon/evening, depending on where you are in the world! I’m J.R. Loveless and I’m here to introduce a new novella release as well as to answer some really awesome questions proposed by Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words! I want to say thanks to the host here for letting me guest post today. It’s a privilege and an honor to be here.

You Belong With Me was released on November 9th from Dreamspinner Press. The story was inspired by a song and the feeling it sparked inside of me when I heard it. Please continue reading for a glimpse into the story and into some of what makes me the writer I am today. I hope you enjoy the interview and the excerpt from my latest novella.

  • Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal? – My inspiration for books comes from every direction. I read a lot, watch movies, listen to music, but even a single conversation can spark an idea. In fact, even discussing my tattoo that I recently got this year sparked an idea for a new universe of shifters. I could be standing in the shower and an idea will come to be from nowhere. I currently have about six WIPs and another seven ideas written down.
  • Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And  why? – I am definitely a pantzer. I have tried planning or plotting out a story completely from A to Z but by the time I got even a couple of chapters into the story I found myself unable to finish it. Mostly because I was bored with the storyline. I like the mystery of letting my characters write the story as I work on it. It may seem like more work because I have to be careful not to leave plot holes as I go along but at the same time it gives me more of a surprise and more to work with as the story progresses. It leaves it fresh for me really, keeps me on the edge of my seat.
  • Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so? – I prefer paranormal/fantasy. There’s just something about werewolves, vampires, and other creatures, humans being able to shapeshift, just draws me in. Typically when I look for stories, I tend to turn toward those first. I do read contemporary, but there has to be a certain element to it in order for it to grab my attention. I like angst for sure, not just straight up “date and fall in love” romance.
  • If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why? – I think I’d have to choose Seth from Chasing Seth. I’d make him a little less… of a wilting flower so to speak. I’d make him stronger. He started off that way, but after Kasey came into the picture, he kind of trailed off into leaning on Kasey a bit too much and allowed more of his emotions to show through.
  • Can a author have favorites among their characters and do you have them? – Of course! Even though a parent will tell you they don’t play favorites, they always do. I don’t care what anyone says on that front. People will always have favorites of one kind or another. My favorite character out of all of my own would have to be Logan from Touch Me Gently. Who doesn’t want a strong, gorgeous, kind, sweet cowboy to come sweep them off their feet and show them the kind of love and acceptance Logan shows Kaden?
  • If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list? – As I indicated before I love paranormal/urban fantasy so I would definitely be taking shifter stories. I only read gay romance for the most part. Some of my favorite authors are Mary Calmes, Lisa Oliver, and Lynn Hagen. I pretty much read everything by them. I also would have to take my Harry Potter series. 🙂
  • Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why? – I was an early reader, actually. I picked up anything and everything I could. My favorite book as a child was Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. As I grew older I also loved The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley. See the theme? Animal stories! I think that’s why most of my stories usually have an animal in them in some way or another, typically.
  • If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be? – Where’s the Love?

Blurb

youbelongwithmefs-1Scott has been in love with his best friend Craig for years, but watching Craig with his manipulative boyfriend has worn Scott down, and he knows he needs a break from the pain and maybe a change of scenery and perspective. His twin sister, Karen, convinces him to spend a summer in Paris.

Karen is sick and tired of seeing Scott suffer, and she’s not going to stand for it anymore. She confronts Craig and tells him what he’s been missing by spurning Scott’s affection in favor of a jerk who mistreats him.

When Craig unknowingly breaks Scott’s heart, Craig opens his eyes—and his own heart—to the possibility of a future with Scott. He plans to use the time while Scott’s abroad to orchestrate a romantic surprise that will show Scott they belong together. But when he sees Scott with another man at the airport, Craig fears he’s too late.

Excerpt

Scott

Having slept all day, Scott couldn’t sleep that night. He felt restless and constantly moved his shoulders. Something seemed off and he couldn’t put his finger on it. After some major debating with himself, he finally turned on his cell phone. There were multiple texts from Craig, but he couldn’t bring himself to read them. The odd thing was, once the phone was on, there were no calls or texts. His brooding grew worse.

Stanley tried everything he could to distract him from thinking, but even the smallest thing reminded Scott of Craig. They hadn’t gone a full twenty-four hours in their entire friendship without at least talking to each other. Sadly, last night might be the last time they spoke for a while. Craig would be so pissed at him for leaving without saying good-bye.

That would lead to Scott having to explain why. Could he finally tell him? After all this time? Would Craig hate him? Pity him? It might even end their friendship. Could he survive that? Questions raced each other around and around inside his head, never letting up as the hours drifted by at a slow pace.

“Scott,” Stanley said with exasperation, as if he’d called his name more than once. “Come on. It’s your turn.”

They were in the middle of playing Monopoly. Scott gave a chagrined smile. “Sorry. Guess my mind isn’t all here.”

“Would you rather watch a movie?” Stanley was trying to keep his face passive, blank. Scott knew he felt bad for him.

Scott shrugged. “If you’d prefer.”

They cleaned up the game, and Stanley popped in an action movie that didn’t have a speck of romance. “Want some popcorn?” he offered.

“Nah. I’m not really hungry.” In fact, Scott hadn’t eaten all day. The thought of food made him feel sick to his stomach.

Not more than thirty minutes into the movie, Stanley fell asleep. Scott heard his soft snuffle and smiled. He stood up and pulled the afghan from the back of the couch to cover him. He carefully removed Stanley’s wire-framed glasses to set them on the coffee table. It reminded him of the many times Craig had fallen asleep while they were watching a movie late at night.

Scott sighed and wearily sank down into the easy chair nearby. He knew it was time to let Craig go, but how would he find the strength he needed to do it? It wasn’t fair to Craig if he just cut him from his life. Craig didn’t know.

He wasn’t even sure how he let himself fall in love with Craig. But he clearly remembered the day he realized it. They were playing basketball outside his house, and Craig stripped off his shirt to wipe the sweat from his face. Scott’s eyes were drawn to Craig’s chest and stomach. The sun glinted off the beads of sweat like diamonds. Craig tossed the shirt at him teasingly. “What? You want my hot bod?” He flexed his miniscule muscles arrogantly.

Maybe that was Scott’s chance, but he swallowed hard and shakily said, “No. Who’d want your skinny-chicken self?”

Craig let out an indignant shout and rushed at him. Scott tried to run, but Craig was faster and tackled him in the grass before he started to tickle him. Tears were rolling by the time Craig collapsed onto the grass next to him, huffing from his own laughter. His eyes were sparkling with happiness and affection. “Buds forever, right?”

As he looked into Craig’s eyes, Scott’s heart started to pound so hard against his rib cage. And an overwhelming sense of wanting to kiss his beautiful lips washed over him. He managed to choke out, “Yeah.”

Its for you or anyone who actually had the thought “hey, I wonder if I could write a story”. Write…50,000 words. In one month. Chart your progress. Meet tons of people on line just like yourself. The end goal? To complete a novel by 11:59 PM on November 30.

Well, maybe that’s daunting for some.  And for others, a tad too late to get started this year.

So last week we came up with STRW FFWriMo.  Starting today, write a Flash Fiction story.  That’s a small, no micro tale…tiny fiction.  You have until the end of November.  That’s midnight, November 30th to get your flash fiction story into us.

What is Flash Fiction? Generally speaking its any fiction under 1000 words, although even that seems to vary with definitions from 1200 to 100 words.  Its micro fiction.  Here’s a couple of articles to help you all out:

Earlier our reviewer, Paul B, read and reviewed Flight: Queer Sci Fi’s Third Annual Flash Fiction Contest (QSF Flash Fiction #2), an excellent anthology of flash fiction for science fiction lovers and those who love the short story format.  Flash Fiction, while not new, is steadily gaining in popularity and here is your chance to try your hand at writing a flash fiction story of your own and perhaps make a comment on recent events.

I would love to get a flood of stories.  Maybe enough in the future to put out a charity anthology of our own if the authors are agreeable. Its something to think about.

STRW FFWriMo Contest

What to write about?  Last week I said we would choose topics but I’m throwing that out the window based on recent events.  I’m leaving the subject matter up to each writer.  It can be contemporary, science fiction, horror, supernatural…its up to you.  It must be LGBTQIA.  And it must be Flash Fiction.  You must be over the age of 18.  Those are our only restrictions other than the time constraint.  Have your story in by midnight, November 30, EST.

Prizes: $25 Amazon gift card for the one chosen by our guest judge, and for the first 5 ppl getting in their stories $10 gift cards (their choice Amazon or Dreamspinner Press).  Rights to these stories remain with the authors.

Again here are the rules for STRW FFWriMo:

  • Can be any topic and any genre as long as its LGBTQIA.
  • Must be flash fiction (under 1000 words, presumably 300)
  • Story must be finished and into us at scatteredthoughtsandroguewords@gmail.com by midnight, November 30th EST.
  • The author must be 18 years of age or older.

So now get writing. You can do it.  Inspiration  isn’t far away these days.  I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with.  Lets hear you roar!

A MelanieM Review: Hanging The Stars (Half Moon Bay #2) by Rhys Ford

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

hanging-the-stars-by-rhys-fordAngel Daniels grew up hard, one step ahead of the law and always looking over his shoulder. A grifter’s son, he’d learned every con and trick in the book but ached for a normal life. Once out on his own, Angel returns to Half Moon Bay where he once found…and then lost…love.

Now, Angel’s life is a frantic mess of schedules and chaos. Between running his bakery and raising his troubled eleven-year-old half-brother, Roman, Angel has a hectic but happy life. Then West Harris returns to Half Moon Bay and threatens to break Angel all over again by taking away the only home he and Rome ever had.

When they were young, Angel taught West how to love and laugh but when Angel moved on, West locked his heart up and threw away the key. Older and hardened, West returns to Half Moon and finds himself face-to-face with the man he’d lost. Now, West is torn between killing Angel or holding him tight.

But rekindling their passionate relationship is jeopardized as someone wants one or both of them dead, and as the terrifying danger mounts, neither man knows if the menace will bring them together or forever tear them apart.

Hanging The Stars, the second book in the Half Moon Bay series, had a obstacle to overcome that most Rhys Ford books don’t start out with.  I wasn’t crazy about one of the main characters right off the bat.

West Harris was a minor character in a close-to-my-heart book, Fish Stick Fridays.  A twin in appearance only to Lang Harris the bookstore owner and wonderful MC of that story, much like Zig (really you have to read that book) I was ready to write this fellow right off.  Skedaddle, out of here!  Nope, Ford was determined to put West on the road to redemption.

Well, its a hard road, I’m telling you.  I wasn’t ready to accept him right at the start.

What’s not so hard to do?  Fall in love with Angel Daniels and his brother Roman.  Ford loves her down on their luck men.  When she writes about them, builds their characters, something special happens.  A magical spark ignites, a personality pops into place and boom, there rides into the story a layered, hunted man.  Tortured past, looking to better himself for any number of reasons, trying to escape the demons running so close behind him. That Angel Daniels.  In this case, its Roman his young highly intelligent brother that’s pushing Angel to get them a better life.  A few scenes, snappy dialog, and hints of their awful past. and there you are, rooting for these two to make it happen.

Then  West Harris enters the picture.  I swear most of the time I wanted to swat him one. Mostly because I was that irritated with him.

Turning around a prejudice towards a character is a hard thing for an author to have to do.  Making that turn here, well, it didn’t happen as smoothly for me as I think the author might have hoped.  I guess I thought certain connections should have been made far sooner than someone as bright as he was supposed to be.  Maybe it was because I adored Angel and Roman so much that they shone so brightly that took longer to connect with West.  That entirely possible.  I was certainly more emotionally engaged in the dynamics in the relationship between brothers first, and then between Angel and West.

Then all three, Angel, West and Roman, began to meld into a unit.  That’s when this story took flight.  I loved it when all three started to come together as a whole.  West became more layered, more a functioning human being.  The scenes as West and Roman discussed candy spreadsheets?  Priceless!  If Zig is focused on world domination, then Roman is be her CFO.  Rhys Ford should seriously consider writing a book filled with Zig’s and Roman’s and fantastical creatures and libraries bursting at the seams with books full of mystical things.  I’d buy them and hand them out on the street.  She writes children and pretweens like no one’s business.  I recognize them as I have one just like them in my family.   How much they enrich these stories can’t be measured.

Hanging the Stars pulled the mysteries together and the murderous reign of terror to an end in a totally satisfactory manner.  Yep, happy at the end. Ford left me wanting more as she always does.  And as we are all likely to get more…Half Moon Bay is a wonderful place.  I can’t wait to see who and what is coming next.

I recommend this story.  And the one before it.  The author too.  S’marvelous…all three!

Grab up the first and wait for this to come out.  And don’t be so hard on West Harris as I was.  He had Lang Harris (and 2 cats)  to overcome.  That’s a tough one in any case.
Cover Artist: Reece Notley.  I think its perfect for the character and in keeping with the series.

An Alisa Audiobook Review: Whiskers of a Chance by Tempeste O’Riley and Craig Beck (Narrator)

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

whiskers-of-a-chance-audiobookJason Grant runs his own IT business from home, owns his own home, and has the best friend he could imagine. What he doesn’t have, or believe he will ever have, is love. When Jason catches a glimpse of his new neighbor on moving day, his libido ignites and his fascination in piqued. He even manages to concoct an excuse to go over and meet the man who makes him hope and want for more than he has in years.

Keith Skyler is a shifter in a world where his kind is known only to a few, but they don’t often mix and they never mate. Keith has been hoping for a mate since before he can remember, but gay lynx don’t have true mates. As far as he knows, they don’t have mates at all. However, while moving his little family across Seattle—and away from their tribe—his reality tips and spins more than he thought possible.

When these two men meet over a dish of five-cheese broccoli-noodle casserole, sparks fly.

Who knew a welcome-to-the-neighborhood gift could give both of them their chance at love?

I liked listening to this story.  Keith has kept many things about himself hidden for years and hopes that moving his sister and himself across the city will give him the opportunity to live his life as he has always wanted.  Jason has been hurt so many times in the past and lives his life pretty much alone except for his best friend.

This story is told from both character’s points of view, which give us the ability to see both characters thoughts and emotions.  Jason has a hard time accepting that anyone would love him at all let alone unconditionally, but Keith is willing to do anything to prove it to him.  Keith has to learn to work with others, werewolves and vampires, towards a common goal for a better life.  I enjoyed the interactions of these two as they worked through their differences to build a life together.

Craig Beck did a nice job narrating this story.  The use of different voices for the characters helped me to keep track of the story.  He did a good job of portraying the characters emotions in his reading; however, I had trouble with a few of the voices he used for the characters made them sound like dumb jocks, but that didn’t match the words and thoughts of those characters.

Cover art by Catt Ford is very nice and matches the characters in the story.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Wolfsong by TJ Klune and Kirt Graves (Narrator)

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

wolfsong-audiobookOh my! This was the very best shifter story I’ve ever read! A master of intricate plots, TJ Klune applied his very vivid imagination to creating an intriguing, complex drama that also happens to be a sweet story of a love between a man and a wolf—a love fated to last for all time. Add to that, the very talented voice of narrator Kirt Graves, and I could have listened to this eighteen-hour audiobook for another eighteen hours without being the least bit bored. Every time I thought it was coming to an end, a new plot twist was thrown out to intrigue readers and listeners even more.

Ox was a plain-speaking, easygoing, simple man with no expectations for himself beyond being good to his mother. After all, his daddy always told him he’d get nothing but shit in life before his daddy left for good. Ox lived with his mom near the big house at the end of the lane that was vacant for years, until one day he came home to find a boy standing in the road—a boy named Joe, who now lived in the big house. Ox didn’t know it then, but this talkative, high energy boy would someday be the focus of his world.

The author takes us into that world—the world of werewolves and magic—and what an adventure we get! It’s not pretty; it’s not sweet and fluffy romance; it’s gritty, and powerful, and gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, and heartwarming drama. But when I finished, I wanted to howl and sing their wolfsong.

It’s not often that I’m at a loss for words, but I don’t think there are enough adjectives to describe how incredible this book is. And the narration? Outstanding and superb are somehow too inadequate to do it justice. Just buy it and listen and wallow in the joy of having found the best book of the year.

The cover by Reese Dante features two paw prints on a black background—striking in its simplicity.

An Ali Release Day Review: A Chance for Us (New Vampire Justice #2) by Jake C. Wallace

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

a-chance-for-us-by-jake-c-wallaceLove between a young man with a broken mind and the jaded New Vampire Justice officer who cares for him might be the last hope to stop a human-vampire war….

This was a great way to continue this series.  I haven’t read the first book in a couple years, but it didn’t take long to get into the story and remember what happened in the first book.  Justin is trying to learn how to live his life while dealing with everything that has happened to him, even if he doesn’t remember everything.  Max is terribly confused about his feelings towards Justin, but will do anything to protect him.

Max and Justin were thrown together when Max rescued Justin.  When Justin starts to get flashes of memory from his years in a catatonic state things start to twist and turn because there is obviously something else going on.  Max and Justin are more of a couple in their interaction than they realize and it’s almost too late when Max finally catches up.

This story is told from both characters’ points of view, so it is easy to see both of their emotions and thoughts.  I could feel how frustrated and lost Justin felt, especially when he started have “dreams” about pleasure in pain.  When Max tries to resist his pull to Justin and goes out on a date with a woman, it pushes Justin to go into a bad situation.  Max feels desperate to get Justin back and show him how he feels.

Cover art by Reese Dante is perfect and I love the visuals for both of the characters, it also follows the pattern for the series.
