Review Repost: A MelanieM Review: Romancing the Wrong Twin by Clare London

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

romancing-the-wrong-twinHow tangled can a romantic web get?

When gruff mountaineer Dominic Hartington-George seeks sponsorship for his latest expedition, his London PA insists on a more media-friendly profile—like dating celebrity supermodel Zeb Z.

Zeb can’t make the date, so he asks his identical twin, Aidan, to stand in for just one evening. Aidan, a struggling playwright, shuns the limelight to the extent people don’t even know Zeb has a sibling, but he reluctantly agrees.

When the deception has to continue beyond the first date, Aidan fights to keep up the pretense. Dominic likes his sassy, intelligent companion, and Aidan starts falling for the forthright explorer. But how long can Aidan’s conscience cope as confusion abounds? Will coming clean as “the other twin” destroy the trust they’ve built?

I am so hooked on these Dreamspun Romances from Dreamspinner that I can’t wait to get my hands on them as the pop up.  Each one gives our old romance novels  (aka Silhouette or whatever brand you may have gobbled up)and their well used, often loved themes a LGBTQIA twist.

In Romancing the Wrong Twin, Clare London uses, yes, that delicious plot of switched identity and twins.    One twin?  A famous male model, fabulous, sexy,  and a serial dater.  His brother?  Quiet, in the theatre, a writer and director in need of money for his play.  The stage is definitely set for fun and romance and London makes the most of the format by adding in a bear of a mountaineer, Dom, in need of a backer for his climb up Mt. Eiger.  Why not have the famous mountaineer “date” the famous model? After all they share a ad agency…should be a cat walk.  Or not when one famous brother asks the not so famous one to be his Stand-in.

I had a bit of difficulty the first couple of pages.  A case of too much description of extraneous things getting in the way of connecting me to the characters but once I met the irascible Dom and his crew the story started to click.  It got better when Aidan and his theatre troupe came into the story.  You could see how much Aidan was struggling to make it and the affection that all his actors/friends had for him.  That background gave substance (as well as his feelings for his twin) to the reason behind the switch that was pulled.  It wasn’t a lark.  London established a foundation for her plot and it made the story viable.

Aidan and Dom made a great couple.  London gave them the right amount of chemistry and sexy scenes.  I adored them.  And there was just enough  anticipatory angst built into the plot to make you wonder close to the end of the story how the revelation would be handled.  Nicely done.

But one other thing surprised me.  Zeb, Aidan’s brother.  There’s a plot twist here.  I don’t know if I missed his story or if London (please say yes) has his story coming out.  We need to know Zeb’s story too.  How about a Romancing the Right Twin?  Surely that’s in the works?  I’ll be on the lookout, but in the meantime grab up Romancing the Wrong Twin by Clare London.  Its a fun, sweet romance in the Dreamspun Desires series from Dreamspinner Press.  Its one I recommend.

Cover art by  Paul Richmond continues to work well to brand the series and the story.

A MelanieM Review: Fish Stick Fridays (Half Moon Bay #1) by Rhys Ford

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5

fish-stick-fridaysDeacon Reid was born bad to the bone with no intention of changing. A lifetime of law-bending and living on the edge suited him just fine—until his baby sister died and he found himself raising her little girl.

Staring down a family history of bad decisions and reaped consequences, Deacon cashes in everything he owns, purchases an auto shop in Half Moon Bay, and takes his niece, Zig, far away from the drug dens and murderous streets they grew up on. Zig deserves a better life than what he had, and Deacon is determined to give it to her.

Lang Harris is stunned when Zig, a little girl in combat boots and a purple tutu blows into his bookstore, and then he’s left speechless when her uncle, Deacon Reid walks in, hot on her heels. Lang always played it safe but Deacon tempts him to step over the line… just a little bit.

More than a little bit. And Lang is willing to be tempted.

Unfortunately, Zig isn’t the only bit of chaos dropped into Half Moon Bay. Violence and death strikes leaving Deacon scrambling to fight off a killer before he loses not only Zig but Lang too.

I was all set to read the sequel to Fish Stick Fridays when I decided to revisit the first story in the series to reacquaint myself with the characters and the setting of Half Moon Bay.  It  didn’t take long to be swept under the spell of Zig, Deacon, Lang and a orange cat that Zig is determined to call Fred.  How I had missed them.

Writing children into stories is always a iffy proposition.  They can always go so wrong.  Come off sounding not like children at all with dialog so stilted and adult, the character lacking some childish element.  But Zig?  Precocious, profane, wounded, insanely intelligent Zig?  Rhys Ford just nailed her right down to her combat pants, boots and pink tutus!  There she was from the moment we meet Zig, cursing, dirty, wary,  and oh so wonderful.  If, as Deacon says, she’s bent on world domination, well, I’m going to pitch in and help her.  Connection made.

Of course, there’s so much more to this story.  There’s the romance and mystery. With Zig, comes Deacon, her uncle with his own troubled past, Harley and new auto shop in Half Moon Bay.  *Waves fan* Like Lang, the minute Deacon appears in Fish Stick Friday, you lean in a little closer, the magnetism that Ford builds into this character oozing off the pages in line after line.  From the glasses that perch on his nose to his intelligence, its clear that Deacon is so much more than his looks.  Its his interactions with his niece first and then with  Lang.  All those conversations, intriguing dialog, literary references and the care with which they treat each other.  It not only pulls you into the story but into the characters, their relationship and the evolving family unit as a whole.  I love it when relationships get the full adult treatment.  Issues get talked out, full disclosures, etc.  That happens here and I loved every second of it, and this couple.

There is, of course, some nasty characters and mysteries at work here.  Its Rhys Ford people!  Its played off nicely.  It kept me guessing as to where the explosions and danger was coming next.  The suspense and anticipation ratcheted up perfectly.  And that ending?  Just want I wanted to happen!

Lang’s twin brother makes a brief appearance here and sets in motion the second book in the series, Hanging The Stars (Half Moon Bay #2) which I will be reviewing next.  I had forgotten about him honestly until I reread the story.  Didn’t really like him, to be honest. Now I’m chuckling with glee.  Yes, I’ve already read that sequel.  No, you will have to wait for the  review.  What will Rhys Ford deliver next in this series?  I can hardly wait.  I’m loving Half Moon Bay with all its wonderful characters, oddball twists, and great stories.  I hope my favorite couples and Zig (and cats) make appearances in each and everyone.

I absolutely recommend this series.  Its out now in audiobook.  Look for our review by Lila coming soon as will my review of the sequel.  Rhys Ford remains one of my favorite authors.  Fish Stick Fridays and Half Moon Bay is just one more reason why.  Pick it up and find out for yourself if you haven’t already done so.

Cover Artist: Reece Notley.  The only thing more perfect would be the addition of a sidecar for  Zig.  Love it.

Need A Wonderful New Audiobook? Look No Further. The Naked Prince and Other Tales from Fairyland by Joe Cosentino and Joel Leslie (Narrator)

THE NAKED PRINCE AND OTHER TALES FROM FAIRYLAND

Novella by Joe Cosentino

Audiobook Performed by Joel Leslie

Published by Dreamspinner Press

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Word is so happy to have Joe Cosentino here today to talk about the latest audiobook release of THE NAKED PRINCE AND OTHER TALES FROM FAIRYLAND narrated by Joel Leslie.  Welcome, Joe!

I had terrible insomnia as a kid. So my older sister read me fairytales in bed each night. Like me, the leading characters were generally different and didn’t fit in. I wanted to live in those palaces, meet the charming princes, and bring financial equality to those amazing kingdoms. However, I was saddened to see no openly gay characters in any of them.

So I wrote my rainbow spin on my favorite fairytales. The four magical stories are all set in a place I call Fairyland. “The Naked Prince” is a different take on the Cinderella story. Cinder, a poor and beautiful young man who designs clothing, makeup, and hair for his stepmother and stepsisters, offers his clothing and slippers to a naked stranger in the woods who turns out to be none other than Prince Charming. Will Cinder and Prince Charming confront their manipulative mothers, bring equality to the kingdom, find themselves, and find one another? In “The Golden Rule,” when he is caught with nimble Jack, eighteen-year-old Gideon Golden is thrown out of his home in Fairyland by his homophobic parents. With nowhere else to go, he breaks into the home of three men living on Bear Mountain. Bo and Butch enjoy having a young roommate, but Ben isn’t convinced. Will Gideon and Ben make vinegar or honey? “Whatever Happened To … ?” takes place on Christmas Eve. A reporter living on Andersen Lane interviews a celebrity for the Queen Newspaper series, “What Ever Happened To … .” Friction ensues between the celebrity with the growing appendage who can’t tell fact from fiction, and the reporter who has a thing for giants. Eventually a romantic spark is lit between the two as Christmas Day arrives, and they realize they have more in common than living in Fairyland. Finally in “Ice Cold,” after losing their families during the great ice storm in the northernmost kingdom of Fairyland, young Gaelen and Kieran pledged their love for one another. When Isidore rides into Frost Village on his elaborate sleigh, Kieran follows the handsome prince to his castle in Arctic Kingdom, where Kieran becomes Isidore’s bewitched slave. This leads Gaelen on an amazing adventure to find his true love and melt his frozen heart.

The novella released to praise and strong reviews, mentioning the humor, drama, sweet romance, clever plot twists and turns, and of course the happily ever after endings. Going back to my days listening to my sister read to me, I asked the staff at Dreampinner Press if we could produce an audiobook of the novella. I was so pleased when they agreed with me that these stories had to be read for the full Fairyland effect. I was equally happy when they concurred that Joel Leslie, who has a number of Dreamspinner Press books on his impressive resume, was the performer for the job. As an actor, Joel is skilled at creating enticing, diverse, and mesmerizing characters through voice. His numerous accents and vocal styles make him incredibly diverse, sexy, and fun to enjoy. You’ll laugh out loud at his wicked Stepmother, be turned on by Ben the bear, fall in love with Prince Charming, giggle at Cinder’s celestial fathers, and cry along with Gaelen as he searches all over Ice Kingdom for his lover Kieran. I’m sure you’ll agree that Joel and his superior audio technology beautifully bring these four enticing, international stories to fairytale life in this captivating audiobook.

I hope everyone listens to these amazing tales. They will no doubt bring you back to the fun and fantasy of your youth—along with adding a rainbow flair. Let’s move on next to a movie version of these tales. Hear that, Disney?

A Stella Release Day Review: Mapping the Forest by Brandon Witt

RATING 5 out of 5 stars

mappingforest_postcard_front_dspHappily ever after has no map, but sometimes fate sends a guiding light.

Gabe Rice, a seasonal ranger at the Rocky Mountain National Park, can’t seem to get his life on the right trail. He loves the rugged beauty of the land, and there is no place he would rather live than the mountain community of Estes Park. But after six years, Gabe is beginning to wonder if he’ll ever get a full-time position or find love. When Gabe sees Luis—and hears his gorgeous singing—he’s compelled to meet him.

Luis Martinez, the new owner of a hotel and steak ride business in Estes, left California and a career as a therapist for a fresh start in Colorado. But even the beauty of the mountains can’t help him forget the past or move forward. Unprepared for his strong attraction to Gabe, Luis is ready to run and hide from emotions he never thought he’d have again.

Suddenly the path ahead opens to a future that looks brighter for both of them, if they can find the courage to walk forward—together.

Gabe is a thirty-two years old park ranger, he has a seasonal position at a National Park, a work he loves a lot even if his boss is a huge PITA. He has a great group of friends that are his only true family, starting with Jordan, his best friend, and her grandmother, a truly force of nature. Nonethless he is pretty lonely and even the love for his work is not enough anymore. Until one night he is spellbound by Steak Man, or Luis, while  he is singing and playing the guitar in the middle of the forest during a steak ride. From that moment things will change in Gabe life.

Luis has lately upset his all life as a therapist in California to run an hotel and jeep ride combo sight. Actually it was life that messed up with Luis and took Chris, Luis husband,  from him. The hurt for the loss of his partner is still too big and Luis is not ready to take a step forward versus a hypothetical new relationship.  But second chances are one of the greatest things in life.

I’m a huge Brandon Witt fan. I believe he is an amazing writer and I deeply enjoyed every story he has written. Mapping the Forest was no exception. Beautifully written and perfectly balanced in the emotions. Definitely a light read with some sadness to overcome and new beginnings to live.

What I particularly loved were the characters, each of them, not just Gabe and Luis, were well depicted, the Gay Boy Christmas Dinner  group of friends were all well defined and I so want to read each of their own stories. I already met Paxton in Christmas Miracles of a Recently Fallen Spruce. And then there’s Rob who lost his lover many years ago, Todd, Gabe secret crush until he meets the man of his dreams. I loved Mapping the Forest, I liked how the relationship between the MCs evolves, how they take their time getting to know each other and how later they rush into the chemistry, too strong to be ignored or waited on.

I wish to highly recommend this new release by Brandon Witt, great characters, good plot, excellent writing. I was conquered.

I like the different style of the cover art by Anne Cain a lot.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Brandon Witt here today on his Mapping the Forest tour. Welcome, Brandon!

~

In the previous blog tour stop, I spoke about a ‘contest’ of good intentions that had very positive results. However, there was another ‘contest’ associated with Mapping the Forest where the results weren’t so grand.

I was struggling with naming this novel.  I had the titles of the following four books of the series already figured out, but, for some reason, the name of the first one simply wasn’t coming.

So, I had a brilliant idea.  I held a book-naming contest on Facebook.  I listed a few titles and had people vote.

I don’t remember the rest of the titles, but the winning one was Forsaking the Forest.

One of my beta readers didn’t hold back after reading the book.  They hated the title.  Hated it.

It is a little melodramatic if I’m being honest.  But I just really love the word forsake.  I don’t know what my problem is!

And, the beta pointed out, no one in the book actually forsakes the forest.  They all really like the forest.

In the contestants’ defense, all the titles I listed were atrocious.

So, please consider this my apology if you were one of the readers who participated in the contest.  I’m sorry I gave you horrible names to pick from.  I’m sorry that I broke my word and didn’t keep the atrocious title you picked. I did for a while, saying that I couldn’t go back on the contest. More than one person said I was being an idiot.  Thank the lord for them!

It was my fault.  All my fault.  Not yours.  You’re lovely and beautiful and did nothing to deserve such a dark fate as picking between God-Awful titles.

No one in this book forsaked (forsook) the forest, but I did end up forsaking that title.

So, where did the current title come from?

In this novel, both of our loveless heroes are lost in their own different mazes of life and both make their living in and around the national forest of Rocky Mountain National Park, in Estes Park, Colorado.  And though the forest is beautiful and magical, it can also be dark and deadly if you’re unclear of how to navigate the twists and turns of its paths.  For Gabe and Luis, that is true of life.  Unlike with the national park, there is no guide to lead you to the safe stations in life or love.  You have to map it out yourself.

Please join Gabe and Luis as they begin Mapping their ways out of their Forests and towards each other.

(Dear lord, that was cheesy, huh?  But that really is where the new title came from.)

Please join me on November 9, at Love Bytes, for the next blog tour stop.  We’ve mapped our way through this tour to the final posting. (Dear lord, I literally can’t stop.)  I’ve saved the best for last, where I will introduce you to a four-legged friend who plays a very important role in Mapping the Forest.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have EAB here to talk about their latest release Black Snow. Welcome, EAB.

~

Hello everyone! EAB here! I’d like to thank Dreamspinner Press for publishing Black Snow, and Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me here today. Black Snow is my third novel, and in a way, the closest to my heart. Since it begin as a role-play I feel especially connected to the characters.

So what is a role-play? It’s an interactive method of story telling. It’s a chance for two people to “play” different characters, building world’s, obstacles and conflict. (Think dungeons and dragons with sex….lots of sex.)

For me, role-play has always been a way to relax and have fun, but sometimes the writing muse gets the best of me, and I feel the need to share. I’m very glad I took the opportunity to share Black Snow with all of you, and I hope you’ll come to love Brier and Roland as much as I have!

As for future works, I’m working on two comics and a new novel! I know that seems like a lot, but my brain doesn’t know when to say no to my muse.

Now that I’ve told you about my hobbies,  what are yours? Other than reading of course! =P

Thanks for reading,
EAB

Prince Brier Snow has lived in the shadow of King Snow’s exalted memory. However, his fate changes when he nears his majority and Lirend’s steward queen attempts to dethrone him by exploiting an obscure requirement in the late king’s will: a yearlong sabbatical.

Brier travels to the desolate land of Aire to train under the Ceve guild, scorned refugees of war, including their guarded leader, Roland. Brier’s skillful master unlocks hidden potential, and what begins as a dutiful bond turns into ill-fated affection. When Brier returns to the capital, he’s carrying proof of his indiscretions with Roland—and his condition grows more apparent with each passing day. An affair with the huntsman is a scandal Brier’s enemies can use against him, but the birth of an heir is a burden even Brier is not sure he can bear.

Roland Archer, a man with a murky past, is skeptical of the contract to train the prince but willing to do anything for the guild’s freedom. Despite his best intentions, he is smitten by Lirend’s future king. Roland has resigned himself to solitude, but fate has other plans—for him, for Brier, and for Lirend’s oppressed subjects. Can Roland help Brier face a power-hungry queen and a country torn asunder? Either they will bring equality to a land that desperately needs it, or they’ll be thwarted by cunning enemies and an illusory curse.

Prologue

“LONG AGO, there was a maiden with hair black as ebony and skin as white as the snow, so that they called her Snow White. Her lips were red as the rose,” Brier’s portly nurse told him, smiling.

“And she sang and danced. And she was very beautiful,” Brier added perfunctorily.

“Indeed she was,” replied Marietta. “She was kind and comely, and all the kingdom loved her, but the queen of the kingdom was jealous and wanted to get rid of her for good.”

“How?”

“She decided to have her killed.”

“Oh no!” Brier answered, tone darkening.

“Oh yes!” cried his nurse. “She hired a huntsman to kill her in the wood and bring back her heart, so that she could keep it forever.”

Brier slid his legs up and placed his chin on his knees, enraptured in the story about the fair princess whose name was like his own.

“The huntsman did as he was told and took Snow White to the forest. As they entered the forest, they came across a field of flowers. Snow bent down to pick a bouquet of wildflowers, and the huntsman crept behind her and lifted his dagger!”

Brier gasped, horrified. “But he should not kill her!”

“He could not,” corrected the nurse, excitement alive in her eyes. “For he had fallen in love with the princess and told her of the evil queen’s plan.”

“Good gods,” Brier exhaled, relieved.

“Snow White ran,” Marietta whispered, and Brier hugged his knees more firmly. “She had to run away deeper into the woods to escape the queen’s wrath. She found herself alone in the deep, dark wood. ‘Get out… out…’ the trees whispered all around her, and she was terribly afraid. And rightly so,” the nurse added, whipping her head toward Brier almost in warning. “The dark wood is a dangerous place. She tripped and fell into a great crack in the earth. As she fell, a nearby willow’s roots seized her and pulled her under.”

“Then what happened?” Brier whispered, breath hastening.

“Then she lost hope that anyone would ever find her. She thought that she was doomed to live out her days locked in the roots of the old willow tree. Starving, thirsty, and withering away like an old winter branch. However, this could not be further from her fate. Yes, she was stuck, but a passerby heard her cries in the tree roots. He stopped in his tracks and called his brothers to come investigate. Men that wore beards and were half the size of normal men. Some might call them dwarves. Six more dwarves stopped and listened to the cries coming from the old willow. ‘Chop it down!’ the eldest brother answered. And so they did, all seven of them. They cut the tree down, and Snow White was saved.”

“Hooray!” Brier shouted as he jumped on the pillow top mattress.

“When they took her from the tree, she was dirty and exhausted. The willow had cursed her in its last effort of revenge for cutting it down. She had a scar on her neck in the pattern of a tree leaf, but she was alive, and so they brought her back to their cabin, and they mended her to good health.”

“Did she dance and sing again then, Marietta?”

“She did. And how fair she was, thought the dwarves. They spoke of her beauty to other folk who came through the wood. But then, word traveled back to the evil queen. And she was furious! She called for the huntsman, and he confessed that he could not kill Snow White. Enraged, she ordered the guardsmen to kill the huntsman, and, with his dying breath, he confessed his love for the princess.”

Brier reached over to grab a pillow off his oversized bed and squeezed. He suddenly had the feeling that the story would take a turn for the worse.

“The queen decided to finish the job the huntsman did not with a poisoned apple. She disguised herself as an ugly elderly woman, and she came to the cabin that Snow White lived in with the dwarves. She showed Snow White the apple she poisoned, bloodred and perilous, but still Snow had the urge to taste it. The princess took a bite of the apple, and when she did, she died.”

“How dreadful.” Brier shook his head. “Why should the queen hate Snow White so?” he asked, incredulous. “I do not understand.”

The nurse chuckled and smiled at him. “Shall I continue?”

“Please do, Marietta. I should like to know the ending,” Brier replied with a sad smile.

“Well,” the nurse said in a warm voice. “The queen did think that she had finally rid herself of the fair maiden, but alas, there was a crack in her black magic, one that she could not foresee. The magic of the willow was stronger than her own, and it purged the strength of her poison so that Snow White did not die but slept for many years. The prince of the neighboring land did hear of a maiden sleeping soundly in the wood on a bed of wildflowers, in the cabin of seven dwarves.”

“And, I suppose, he too was handsome!”

“He was a handsome prince, I should say, though not as handsome as you, Prince Snow.” Brier blushed through his wide smile. “He came on his white steed, and he found Snow White sleeping soundly just as the rumors had told. Indeed, she was fair, and the prince decided that he had to have her in death or in life, and so he leaned down and placed a chaste kiss to her rose lips.”

“What did happen then I wonder?”

“Then she did wake up, Prince Snow! Her eyelids fluttered open, and she rose from her bed made of daisies and baby’s breath! Oh, how happy were the dwarves and the prince. The dark magic that the queen put on Snow White fell upon herself! And she turned into the old and ugly woman she disguised herself as. The queen was so furious that she drove herself mad with rage. And so, Snow White married the prince, and the dwarves sang and danced and were happy. Princess Snow White had many children, and lived ever after.” When the story finished, the nurse stood up and helped Brier into the comforter. His eyes were heavy with sleep, but he pursed his lips and sighed.

“Did you not like the story, little prince?”

Brier bit the inside of his lip, struggling. “It is not that, Mar’, only that I feel sad for the princess.”

“And why should you? Did she not meet a happy end?” the nurse asked as she sat down on the corner of the bed.

“Mayhap,” Brier answered, considering. “But how did she come to love the prince who had only loved her for her beauty when the huntsman had loved her for her heart?”

The nurse blinked at the prince’s reply. “How indeed.”

“And the poor huntsman, who had died, rather than to disgrace himself with the blood of his beloved. ’Tis a sad story indeed, Marietta.” Brier pouted. “Although you said it was a happy end.”

“Well….” Marietta sighed, bemused. “I did not think of it in that way, little prince.” She tucked him in tighter as if swaddling a babe.

“I think that I should marry a huntsman over a prince,” Brier decided as he flopped his head into the mountain of pillows, smiling softly.

“And why not a princess?” the nurse questioned, crossing her arms.

“That is because I should like to be kissed by a huntsman,” Brier answered matter-of-factly.

A MelanieM Review: Summer Season (Treading the Boards #2) by Rebecca Cohen

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

summer-season-by-rebecca-cohenA trip down to Cornwall is just what Ryan Penniford needs to recover from the daily grind of London life. Ryan and his amateur dramatics society, the Sarky Players, are traveling to Porthcurno to perform at the stunning Minack Theatre.

Stuart Box has returned to Cornwall after earning his PhD, and is killing time as he looks for a job back in London. Spending time with Ryan from the Sarky Players is a great way to take his mind off things.

During their first meeting, sparks fly, but not in a good way, and they must work to get past their initial hostilities to discover they have great off-stage chemistry. Stuart soon learns Ryan is not the superficial man people assume he is, and Stuart likes what he sees. The feeling is entirely mutual.

Pity Ryan is only visiting for two weeks, but both men want to see where this holiday romance might take them.

Summer Season (Treading the Boards #2) by Rebecca Cohen continues the romantic ventures of a local amateur dramatics society called the Sarky Players.   In the first story, Overly Dramatic, it was Andy and Phil who got their HEA, leaving a certain Ryan Penniford to wonder why neither man thought he someone worth pursuing.  Here he gets his answer.  Its because he hadn’t found the man for him yet.  Ryan meets that person when he travels to Porthcurno to perform with the Sarky Players at the famed Minack Theatre.

I’ve included a photo in the review only because if you aren’t familiar with this theatre (I confess I wasn’t before this story), you will be afterwards.  Its as much a major character as any of the other players and rightfully so.  It provides the dramatic backdrop not only for a successful run during the story of Shakespeare’s A Midsummerminack02 Night’s Dream by the Sarky Players with Ryan as a sexy Puck but the romantic setting of sea and village can make anyone fall in love.  Its magic.  We can imagine it because Rebecca Cohen brings that magic out on the page and into the scenes, from the salt on the sea air and the dolphins dancing on the water behind the actors to the walks down the lane.  You get it.  And want to hop on the next plane out to experience it all for yourself.

We get two points of view here, which is nice.  Stuart is at that uncertain place in his life. His degree done, he’s returned home to send out resumes and think about his next step.  So we see all his jumbled thoughts about his future, and the questions in his mind about what to do next. Home includes a wildly unconventional mother who I adored and a pair of neighbors who figured large in his upbringing.  One of which manages the Minack and brings Stuart back into helping out with the new production which is coming into the village.

The other pov is Ryan’s who is a player on the surface, and the total opposite once the layers are removed.  Only he’s hesitant to remove his layers for anyone to see for fear of being hurt.  One person in transition, the other there for only two weeks and afraid of being hurt.  But Cohen shows us that the right place, the right timing, the right people and yes, the magic can happen and feel real.

I am not a believer in “insta love” and part of this still feels a little too fast for my liking.  Yes, too summer holiday.  But they text, and call, and continue to connect once the holiday is over.  And that made it believable for me.  They worked for it.  They traveled to see each other.  I liked that about this story.  It wasn’t a “insta love” and boom they were HEA.  No things had to be worked out. Jobs, housing.  RL issues.  Yet the romance didn’t falter either.

I was actually sorry to say goodbye to Porthcurno and be back in London again.  But that’s where the Sarky Players call home and there’s another story yet to come.  I would love to see the Sarky Players take another road trip.  This one turned out fantastic. I learned about The Minack Theatre and read a lovely romance.  The Sarky Players are such a sweet, fun group. I definitely recommend you make their acquaintance.  Each and every one, from Overly Dramatic to Summer Season.  You don’t need to read the first one to read this one.  Each sort of operates as a standalone, putting them together, however, is a definite plus!  And there’s one more to come.

Cover art by Paul Richmond captures almost every major story element.  Its amazing.  From Ryan as Pan with Stewart watching to the famous Minack Theatre in Cornwall, its perfection.

A Lila Audiobook Review: The Senator’s Secret by K.C. Wells and John Solo (Narrator)

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

the-senators-secret-audioWhen his Republican opponent outs him with a photo in a Facebook post, Senator Samuel Dalton doesn’t have many options open to him. It doesn’t matter that the photo is totally innocent.  He has no choice but to come clean… until his staff suggest putting a spin on it that leaves Sam reeling.

Sure, he’ll end up with a lot of sympathy, not to mention the possibility of more voters from the LGBT community, but it still seems a pretty drastic solution.

Now all they have to do is persuade Gary, the other man in the photo, to play along. It sounds so easy: convince the constituents of North Carolina that he and Sam are engaged.

No big deal, except for the fact that they’ve only just met….

The Senator’s Secret is overly sweet. I’m a K.C. Wells’s fan but this is a departure from her usual stories. She always has likable characters, but in this case, Sam and Gary won the contest. Their story starts strong, just like their relationship. Even when they were playing along, it was nice to see their friendship blossoming. They are a great couple.

It was the type of story we are used to by now as part of this series. The troupe was well-incorporated in the story and the book moved forward nicely. The story has a bit of UST and a good transition into “making love.” I like the way Gary believes in the Senator and everything he does to help the campaign.

Overall, it was a fun, easy going story; perfect for a quiet afternoon. Low angst, cute plot twists, and lovely MCs. It’s the type of story I wish to see in real life. We are in the election season after all. Well, at least here in the States. Definitely, a nice choice if your want to forget about the current presidential campaign, but still have a little political flavor.

John Solo did an amazing job with the narration.  For some reason, I couldn’t stop thinking about Senator John Edwards every time I heard Senator Dalton talking. It has to be the whole southern gentleman thing. The transitions between the characters were flawless and worked well with the author’s style.

The cover by Bree Archer for the audiobook is an adaptation from the e-book cover. It fits the current style for the Dreamspun Desires series, and I loved the model on the cover. The dog and the rest of the background are a plus.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: After the Sunset (Timing #2) by Mary Calmes

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5

after-the-sunset-by-mary-calmes-iiTwo years after riding off into the sunset with ranch owner Rand Holloway, Stefan Joss has made a tentative peace with his new life, teaching at a community college. But the course of true love never does run smooth. Rand wants him home on the ranch; Stef wants an exit strategy in case Rand ever decides to throw him out. Finally, after recognizing how unfair he’s being, Stef makes a commitment, and Rand is over the moon.

When Stef gets the chance to prove his devotion, he doesn’t hesitate—despite the risk to his health—and Rand takes the opportunity to show everyone that sometimes life’s best surprises come after the sunset.

I first read After the Sunset (Timing #2) by Mary Calmes when it came out in 2011, so I wondered how I would feel about it diving into this couple and series the second time around.  Honestly, I think I’ve loved it even more.  Something about Rand and Stef just resonate with me.  They have from the first story, Timing, and the joy and satisfaction I got from reading this sequel returned all over again.

After the Sunset moves the time frame for the series ahead two years.  Rand and Stef have settled into life on the Red Diamond, well, sort of.  Adjustments are still being made.  Stef is now teaching at a community college and the ranch is becoming more self sufficient as Rand expands his business with Stef’s help. Sounds great, right?  With Rand and Stef nothing is ever that easy.  With their past histories, their complication personal dynamics, and a somewhat messy family relationships about to push into their lives, things are going to get lively…Mary Calmes style.

That means that Stef’s need to make a commitment to Rand and the ranch will come into play yet again.  This time for the doubting ranch hands who are not only a cornerstone of the ranch’s success but have become part of the family there as well.  I love how this is their story too.  We get to see more of life on the Diamond, the secondary characters, and Rand’s extended family.  It all becomes necessary to know them better as people and as part of the ranch to get Stef settled deeper into ranch life and as a permanent fixture there as a half of the Rand/Stef couple.

There is so much drama here.  Between Stef and Rand’s cousins, Stef and a few local homophobes, plus all the amazing Stef and Rand sexy interaction.  That I  can never get enough of.  For me they just sizzle.   I love the dynamic they have  going on.  I don’t specifically categorize it because I get it with this couple.  It works for me, and I just find them hot.

One character get a spotlight on him here and that’s Glenn Holloway.  We met him briefly in the first book but his role is hugely expanded here for reasons I won’t go into because they run into spoiler territory.  I ended up liking Glenn.  He went from your basic jerk on the range to someone you start to understand and connect with towards the end.  Which is probably is really good thing considering the next story features Glenn as the main character.

So I’ve completed Timing and After The Sunset once more.  And fallen in love all over again with Stef and Rand and the Red Diamond and its crew.  Even Bella the Rhodesian Ridgeback has a huge place in my heart.  Mary Calmes series has a way of doing that.  They burrow in deep and even if its been awhile since you’ve visited with them, one visit brings all the reasons flooding back why you loved them so in the first place.  And yes, I highly recommend this series.  Coming up next?  When the Dust Settles (Timing, #3).  I’ll let you know what I find.

New cover by Reese Dante is darn near perfect. I think she has Stef captured exactly how I think he looks.  Truly one of Mary’s golden boys.
