Contact (Gothika #5)
by Kim Fielding , F.E. Feeley Jr. , Jamie Fessenden , B.G. Thomas

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have F.E. Feeley, Jr. here today to talk about Contact (Gothika #5), an upcoming anthology from Dreamspinner Press.  Welcome, F.E.

~~

Hi! I’m F.E. Feeley, Jr., one of the authors in the upcoming anthology Gothika: Contact. This is the fifth installment in the Gothika series, which has featured androids, werewolves, voodoo curses, and ghosts! Contact is about encounters with extraterrestrials and alien abduction, and it includes four stories by me, Kim Fielding, Jamie Fessenden, and B.G. Thomas.

In my story, “My Final Blog,” I explored the idea of extraterrestrials establishing contact not by landing a spaceship in our backyard or making toy monkeys come to life (Why do we have those creepy things, anyway?), but by chatting with us online. We’ve already got a worldwide network where it’s possible—and expected—that people will communicate without revealing their identities. How easy would it be for an alien to establish contact with humans on social media, scope us out, and maybe even establish a form of relationship with us before revealing itself?

Here’s how I handled the idea of alien contact in “My Final Blog.”

Blurb

George is an average guy who’s led an average sort of life.  Always fading in the background, he never garnered much attention. People seemed to pass him by or not notice him. Except, of course, in high school where he was tormented by his sexuality. Finding solace online, George developed a blog early on that helped him maintain his sanity.  It was an anonymous link to the outside world to vent his frustrations and express his creativity. And he gathered quite an audience of similar spirits and allies who stayed with him for over the years.

Especially one commenter, Universal47. In the spirit of anonymity, George never pushed him to expose who he really was.  And over a period of years, began to have feelings for this faceless person. When George finds himself in a horrible one sided relationship with an abusive and neglectful partner, Universal steps in to help George break up with him.  Devastated by the outcome of his failed relationship, George threatens to withdraw from Universal47 as well unless he tells him who he really is. The answer may be more than George can handle.

Excerpt

We were wandering into dangerously choppy waters. I was defensive over my relationship. I mean, there were good times. Christmases and birthdays were great. But there were times when I could dry up and disappear and Joseph, I don’t think would have cared. As a matter of fact, it was sort of ‘go away, come back’ messages that I received from him that confused me. Which, I must say looking back, was sort of pathetic. But you know what they say about hindsight. It was always fifty/ fifty. I ended up saying goodnight and went about my evening. But his words haunted me.

Yet, fast forward to the night he told me his name, I sat staring at my computer screen as his name flashed in front of me. Elijah. I liked the name. I, of course, understood the biblical reference. Elijah was a prophet that once called down fire from heaven to consume a sacrifice to God.  Or, it was the name of a really blue eyed actor who played Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings movies. I put those two things up for consideration in the chat box and was greeted with a great big LOL for my efforts.

Universal47: Neither. But that’s funny.

I tilted my head for a moment before typing: Will we ever meet?

Universal47: I believe so. Do you want to meet me?

Me: Of course.

Universal47: Why?

Me: To put a face with a name?

Universal47: Is that all?

Me: Sure. Isn’t that enough.

Universal47: And what would we do if we met.

I rolled my eyes hard at that.

Me: Well, you’re not getting laid if that’s what you mean. I could go on GRNDR for that.

Universal47: HAHAHAHA! I’m sure you could. And no, that isn’t what I’m after either.

Me: so you are after something?

Universal47: Companionship? Is that weird?

Me: No. I don’t think so. You must get lonely, too.

Universal47: You have no idea.

Me: Well, if it’s any consolation to you. At night, when I fall asleep, you’re not far from my mind.

Universal47: That’s really the sweetest thing anyone’s ever said to me. But you don’t know what I look like.

Me: No. I guess not.

Universal47: What do you think about when think about me before you fall asleep.

Me: Honestly? You’ve had many faces. But your arms are always the same. Strong.  There. Just like you’ve been all these years. There. That’s what matters to me, Elijah.

He was quiet for a long time after that and before he could reply, I felt my eyes grow heavy. It had been a long couple of days. And since it was Friday night, I had a whole weekend’s worth of work to do. I bid him goodnight and logged out. I hoped I hadn’t said too much. I hope I hadn’t freaked him out. But my ability to bullshit was completely depleted by that time that truth sort of rolled out of me in waves.  That night, as I lay in bed listening to the wind howling over the prairies it was so mournful and so lonesome sounding that I cried myself to sleep.

Anthology Blurb

Since ancient times, humankind has looked into the night sky and wondered: Are we alone? Are there other civilizations beyond the stars? Will we ever encounter these beings? Who are they, what are they like, and what might they want with us?

These questions are about to be answered, but those who discover the truth might wish they had never asked. On the other hand, some might find salvation in visitors from other planets. For while some aliens are hostile, others are benevolent. Some have little in common with humans, but for others, the need for love and acceptance is universal. Lives will intersect and otherworldly passions will ignite as four acclaimed authors of gay romance explore first contact—and where it can lead.

The Closet Boy Cover by Sean Michael

It’s important to me that all the covers for the Iron Eagle Gym books are immediately recognizable as a part of the same series. The first few books in the series were easy enough to do that, but with this one, I really wanted to have the character in the doorway of a closet. And I had no idea how to accomplish that and still make it look like a part of the same series with the color scheme and all. This is why I am not a cover artist – I had no clue.

However, LC Chase, who has done all the other awesome Iron Eagle Gym covers, is a great cover artist. She had plenty of ideas and I’m so pleased with what she came up with.

I really wanted that closet represented, because it plays two roles – the ‘coming out of the closet’ aspect, as well as the fact that at the begining of the book, Way’ra is literally living in a closet. So thank you LC Chase for being able to translate my awkward attempt at describing the cover in my brain and making it happen.

 Blurb

Way’ra Bernard is only twenty years old when his parents kick him out of the house. He has been brought up to believe being gay is wrong and he is going to go to hell for it. He tried very hard not to be gay but couldn’t change the way he felt. Now he’s living furtively in a closet on the third floor of the place he’s working as a janitor—the Iron Eagle Gym.

Neal McPherson is an unattached Dom in his midtwenties and a member of the gym. One evening after working out, he notices Way’ra on the stairs, and he’s immediately attracted and intrigued, so he asks Way’ra out. Unable to come up with a reason to refuse, and also interested in Neal, Way’ra accepts.

There are a lot of obstacles to the relationship they attempt to build after their date, not least of which is Way’ra’s upbringing and his lingering doubts about the kinky sex Neal enjoys. But with patience and persistence, Neal might convince Way’ra to not only accept himself, but to loosen his inhibitions enough to explore and find a happy ending together.

Chapter One

God, he was tired.

Way’ra finished his shift with the broom and waved to Dalton, the nice night manager sitting at the counter at the front of the Iron Eagle Gym. “Bye, man. I’m going to check the bathrooms, and then I’ll be out of your hair.”

“Have a good night, Way. Don’t party too hard.”

Right. Because he remembered parties. The last four months had been the longest of his young life. He’d been outed, thrown out of his conservative religious college and out of his house without anything more than the clothes on his back and his wallet.

No phone. No laptop. No cash. No shoes. He’d managed to pull two hundred dollars from the ATM before his dad froze the account.

Still, he’d done it, hadn’t he? He had a job cleaning here at the Eagle, and in a month he’d have enough saved to rent a room. All he had to do was wait it out.

Well, wait it out and pray that no one noticed that someone was sleeping in one of the third-floor broom closets. So far he’d been doing it for a few months and no one was the wiser. He’d tried staying in the park, but between the snow and the cold, it had been so nasty. He’d been hoping spring would be difference, but there’d been so much rain. He only had the one pair of jeans; he couldn’t show up to work with them wet.

When he’d discovered the tiny broom closet with a layer of dust on the floor, it had felt like magic, like it was meant to be. He wasn’t hurting anything. No one was staying there, and he was super careful to sneak out before one of the day managers saw him in the morning, grab his one meal of coffee and a doughnut, and hang out for a couple of hours before he showed back up to work.

He was headed up the back stairs, quiet as a mouse, when a gorgeous stud suddenly appeared at his side. The guy was tall, close to a foot bigger than him, and with the best muscles. He was wearing a pair of sweats and a T-shirt, gym bag slung over one shoulder.

“Headed up too?” Even the guy’s voice was studly—deep and growly.

“Uh. Uh-huh. Just checking supplies.” He kept his head down, his gaze forward. This man was twice his size, easily, and he wasn’t interested in a confrontation.

“Oh right, you work here. I thought I recognized you. Do you like it?” The guy was taking the stairs two at a time, but doing it slowly enough that they stayed level.

“Yes, sir. It’s a good job.” No one asked questions. No one bothered him. No one noticed him. He didn’t exist, and that was just like he wanted it.

SERIES: Home for Hope #3

AUTHOR: Shell Taylor

PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press

COVER ARTIST: L.C. Chase

LENGTH: 210 Pages

RELEASE DATE: October 14, 2016

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Shell Taylor here today to talk about food and their latest release, Reclaiming Hope.  Welcome, Shell!

Hi, everyone! Thanks so to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me! Today, I wanted to talk about one of my most favorite things in the world… FOOD! If you’ve read any of my books, you’ve probably figured that out. I love the idea of family dinners – I had them growing up every night and my family has them now every night. To me, it’s the perfect way to bring people together to share about their days because no matter how busy we all get, everyone has to eat!

First I wanted to talk about The Homeplace, which is a real thing. It’s not in Raleigh but located near Roanoke, VA, where I lived for several years right after I got married. And lemme tell ya… this place is amazing. I love home cooked food, and even though I love cooking, I love a family style meal even more when I don’t have to cook it or clean up after. The family-style restaurant is just as described in the book, although I did leave out the AH-MAZING fruit cobblers they have for dessert because Kollin and Riley wrapped up their dinner so quickly. So if you’re ever in that area, please be sure to check that place out and eat yourself into a food coma (it’s a farm house so you can walk off your meal around the farm before or after you eat!)

Saturday Brunch is a thing I want to have in my house but A) I’m too lazy to do all that work and B) my kids are so involved in soccer and basketball that we couldn’t do it during sport seasons even if I wanted to. I love the idea though and I love breakfast food, so I couldn’t resist including it. And honestly, doesn’t it sound like something Adam and Elijah would enforce??

Grilled cheese fries and chicken and dumplings… uh, yeah. Chicken & Dumplings are a favorite of everyone in my family. Honestly, when it’s a bit chilly outside and you want some comfort food, it’s hard to beat these. I wish I could share a wonderful recipe with you, but as far as I can figure out, these are a fly by the seat of your pants kind of meal. I will, however, share the recipe for grilled cheese fries with you. I have to confess that I found these on Pinterest. We’ve only made them a couple of times because… well, they’re a bit of a PITA. Deep frying anything is messy and we don’t have a deep fryer so it takes forever blah de blah blah. BUT, they taste amazing and for a once in a while indulgence are worth it. I imagine they’d also be tasty if you added some cooked bacon in there somewhere (because bacon makes errrrything better!)

Grilled Cheese Fries

Ingredients

  • 2 tubes of crescent roll dough
  • Velveeta cheese, thinly sliced
  • oil for frying
  • flour for dusting to prevent sticking

Instructions

  1. Lightly flour your countertop. Unroll one of the tubes of crescent roll dough into a rectangle, and press the seams together with your fingers. Lay the Velveeta cheese slices on top of the crescent roll dough rectangle. Unroll the other crescent roll dough, press the seams together as you did the first one, and then lay on top of the cheese topped one. Press the end seams together with your fingers. Roll out flat with a rolling pin.
  2. Fold your cheese filled crescent dough in half. Roll out flat. Fold in half again, roll again. Then repeat one more time. At this point, your cheese & dough will start becoming one with each other.

Slice the cheese filled dough into strips. Cut the strips in half if they are too long. Fry in hot oil for about 20 seconds, being careful to not over cook. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate to drain. Serve hot.

You can also google it and find the step by step instructions with pictures. I’m pretty sure I just used slice cheese because again, I’m lazy.

If anyone makes this or ever does find The Homeplace, please let me know! I love hearing from you guys, especially about food!

Thanks so much for stopping by today. Don’t forget to enter to win the giveaway for a chance to win an Amazon gift card or a book from my backlist. Or… if you’d rather, I also have an audio copy of Redeeming Hope (Home for Hope book 1) to give away!

BLURB: Sequel to Resurrecting Hope

Home for Hope: Book Three

Four years ago, Kollin Haverty’s best friend, Riley Meadows, dropped off the face of the earth. When he shows up out of the blue, armed with a flimsy excuse for disappearing and having nearly completed his transition from female to male, Kollin wants to pick up where they left off. But Riley’s unwillingness to be honest with Kollin prevents him from fully trusting Riley again. Despite Riley’s insecurities and Kollin’s abandonment issues, they quickly discover there’s something more than friendship between them.

When a ghost from Riley’s past unexpectedly appears with haunting memories in tow, Kollin’s anger about being lied to outweighs his desire to be the understanding boyfriend Riley needs. As Riley’s web of strategically withheld secrets begins to unravel, he must find the courage to pursue his own peace before he can move forward with Kollin, and Kollin must decide what’s more important—supporting his best friend or protecting himself.
Excerpt

Adam rolled his eyes to mimic her and then turned his attention toward Kollin. “Look who the cat dragged in.”

For some reason, Kollin’s heart fluttered. Waves of nervousness raced through his body as he tried to figure out why Adam thought he should know the stranger. He’d never told either of his parents about meeting the guy at the bookstore, and even if he had, Adam couldn’t have known he was the same person.

The man studied the ground, seemingly reluctant to look at Kollin, but Kollin knew he couldn’t identify him even if they were staring directly at one another.

Fortunately Adam saved him from further embarrassment. “I didn’t recognize Riley until he threatened to own me in Ping-Pong.”

Kollin sucked in a huge gulp of air. The nervous flutters, which had been nothing more than a curious enigma, ceased, and he suddenly felt as if a boulder had settled in the pit of his stomach.

He hadn’t spoken to Riley Meadows in over four years. When Kollin’s parents kicked him out, Riley had been the one who kept Kollin sane. He tethered him to reality when all he’d wanted was to escape inside himself. They’d kept in touch when Riley first went to college and somehow became even closer—until Riley seemingly dropped off the face of the earth. Phone calls, e-mails, texts… all unanswered. Kollin eventually took the hint and gave up.

Now Riley was back?

A Free Dreamer Release Day Review: Changing Worlds (Worlds #1-2) by Cari Z

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

changing-worlds-by-cari-zTheir love will either inspire change in the world or tear it apart.

Former starship captain Jason Kim and his lover, Ferran, are starting a life together on Ferran’s native planet. The Perel matriarchs reluctantly allowed their marriage in the hopes of securing better diplomatic relations with humanity, even though the decision ignites anger from traditionalists. Ferran’s family accepts Jason and the love the two men have found, but other influential families are less accommodating and much less willing to welcome an outsider to their isolated, subterranean world. Some of their enemies are willing to go as far as eliminating Jason permanently. Tensions are quickly building toward a breaking point that might push Perelan into a bloody civil war.

If Jason and Ferran have any hope of surviving the coming conflict, they’ll have to rely on their devotion to each other more than ever before. But that won’t be easy when a figure from Jason’s past reappears to make them question everything.

First Edition of Opening Worlds published by Storm Moon Press, 2011.

First Edition of Changing Worlds published by Storm Moon Press, 2012.

First of all, the blurb is a bit misleading. The things mentioned in the blurb do happen, but it takes a while to get there. The book starts with Ferran and Jason meeting and falling in love, so they don’t start out as an established couple and Jason is still an active starship captain.

I’m always a bit wary of real aliens in my romance, because I’m so not into tentacles. But while Ferran is definitely an alien and definitely looks different than a human, there are no tentacles. So, yay for me!

Cari Z. got really creative with the Perelans and their world. A matriarchy is rare enough that I always find it interesting. “Changing Worlds” is a perfect example that world building and romance can and do work perfectly well together, without either part of the plot having to suffer. That’s something not a lot of romance authors seem to get and which always bothers me as a fantasy/sci-fi fan who also enjoys romance.

Ferran and Jason are both very likeable. They come from completely different backgrounds and yet compliment each other perfectly. Their romance felt pretty realistic. We got to see the bumps after the very fast falling in love. Although the two of them don’t spend a whole lot of time together before they decide to commit to each other, it never really felt like insta-love.

Reading about Jason’s very real struggles with finding his place in a world that’s so completely different from everything he’s used to was very interesting. We get to learn all sorts of things about Perel together with Jason.

There are lots of hints about Jason’s past in the military and yet we never get a full story of what actually happened. That’s a real shame because it sounds as if he led a very interesting life before meeting Ferran. Since there doesn’t seem to be a sequel (or prequel) planned, there’s no hope for a more thorough explanation. It’s the only reason why I ended up giving this book 4.5 instead of 5 stars.

Long story short: “Changing Worlds” has every chance of appealing to both science fiction fans AND romance fans. Neither part takes away from the other.

I’ll definitely go looking for more science fiction books by this author!

Cover art by Anne Cain: I quite like the cover by Anne Cain. It shows Jason and Ferran, who really fits the descriptions in the book.

Here’s Reading You ~ An Author’s POV! (Part III) This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

ereader-on-a-bookshelf

Here’s Reading You ~ An Author’s POV! (Part III)

Last week Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words finished up our reader’s thoughts on eBooks, how they use them, where they find them and the authors that  write them.  This week, its the authors turn.  From hardback and paperback or even the graphic novel to the eBook, what does writing and publishing eBooks mean to an author?  Has it helped them find an audience? Made it easier to publish a novel? Made it harder to find time to write because they are so busy promoting themselves and their stories? And is the eBook industry changing?
I know…what a lot of questions to dump onto an author already burdened with so much to do these days.  But I thought it might help us understand eBooks from their perspective and maybe let us appreciate those stories that we read just a little more when we consider the author’s point of view.   Maybe you as readers have questions you want to ask our authors?
That’s why we are dividing our authors blog section into two parts, one this week and into the next.  If you have questions, please comment below and all week long.  If we use your questions?  See the contest at the end of this blog for your answer!
The  authors participating this week are Parker Williams (Of Love and Corn Dogs), Wulf Francu Godgluck (Tooth, Claw, and Horn Chronicles), and Jay Northcote.  Thank you all for participating and taking time away from your busy schedules to answer my questions.

 ~ Authors On Ebooks~

Parker Williams

As an author, what has your experience been publishing ebooks?  Especially self published ebooks?  Did you start off that way?  Was a traditional publishing house not the answer?  Or if it was, why?

No, I started out being published by Harmony Ink (the YA arm of Dreamspinner Press.) A friend encouraged me to try it, and even helped me get the book ready to submit. Hitting that ‘send’ button was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, because I grew up thinking that writing wasn’t for me (thank you, Dad!)

How has the ebook industry changed since you started publishing?  How do you view these changes?

I’m not sure how much the industry has changed since I started in it. Self-publishing has been a terror for me, because I’m not sure what the heck I’m doing. I pay a company to format my books, because the rules for each site are wide and varied.

Have you as an author benefited, are indifferent, or has it made your job more difficult to get your books out there?
I’ve had to be more creative to get my book noticed. My saving grace was running Pride Promotions, because I had a list of bloggers who I already worked with who were willing to help me. So to them, I am exceptionally grateful.

What things would you change if you were starting over?
If I were to start over, I would be less hesitant about some things that I thought would turn people off. Haven’s Creed, for example. I was so certain no one would buy it, and even more certain that I would get pilloried for publishing it. As is the came with most books, it has some who loathed it, but surprisingly a lot of people seemed to enjoy it. It gave me the courage to explore some other things I might not have done otherwise.

What has been your biggest challenge?  And biggest victory as an author – other than publishing that is? Is it see your genre  expand?
My biggest challenge is not knowing what I’m doing with self-publishing. I wish I could understand it, or find an easier way to format, because I feel silly having to ask for help. My biggest victory? The very first letter I ever got that told me my writing made a difference to someone. Knowing that even just one person thought my story was worthwhile.
And I would *LOVE* to see the genre expand. I think too many people see M/M or F/F literature, and automatically shuffle it off to the side without even giving it a chance. There are some stellar storytellers out there that they’re missing out on.

Where do you see ebooks and yourself in the future?
I hope to be writing until the day I die. When I go, I want to have my collection of books buried with me, so I have something to read while I wait for eternity to pass.

✍From Wulf Francu Godgluck, author of the Neon White, and the Tooth, Claw, and Horn Chronicles and more:

As an author, what has your experience been publishing ebooks?  Especially self published ebooks?  Did you start off that way?  Was a traditional publishing house not the answer?  Or if it was, why?

I have self-published all my books and don’t think I would change that anytime soon, you have more freedom as a self-published author but you also have to carry the cost and the risk thereof: Publishers already have an established readership, whereas if you are an author just starting out and self-publish your first book, you need to build that readership first, you also run the risk of plagiarism and piracy, where unfortunately you don’t have a legal team to back you up. But again you would earn more royalties on each individual copy sold, you determine the price of your book but you also run the risk of loss if you do not sell enough copies to compensate for the cost of getting your book published.
I guess it all depends on where and with what you are more comfortable. The only reason I self-published in the first place is publishers tend not to like my books because of the tone of my writing, as it tends to be a bit on the dark side.

How has the ebook industry changed since you started publishing?  How do you view these changes?
In my honest opinion a lot, and not for the better, new books pop up every day now and the problem is the writing of these books is becoming poorer and poorer. Because the problem we are facing today is the lack and misunderstand of literacy, I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the number of authors and readers that still does not get the concept of showing and not telling, the difference of just simply reading what is actually written and then to thinking about what was said in that sentence as to what is actually conveyed, then there’s lack of using beta readers, and yet these books still sell? And more often than not it’s self-published books. So the bigger question we need to ask ourselves is; can readers really differentiate between a well-written book and a poor one, in all honesty, it seems that the poorly written books these days are the ones selling. Why? Because readers deem this poor quality of literature acceptable.
Why readers? Because it’s a vicious endless cycle – poorly written books are read by readers- reader becomes authors- produces poorly written book because of reading poorly written books.

Have you as an author benefited, are indifferent, or has it made your job more difficult to get your books out there?

Assuming this question is based on the previous answers, yes it has made my job more difficult: anyone can tell a story, not everyone can write a novel. It took me five years to even feel ready to show my first novel to readers, and that’s not from reading a lot, that came from writing, learning how to write, learning the difference between showing and not telling a story, learning how to convey the right words in the right way to paint the picture I want to portray inside the reader’s mind and the emotions I want to invoke inside the reader’s heart. It came from endless rewrites- first drafts, second drafts, and third drafts. From taking a step back and thinking about what I am writing, and from working very closely with my beta readers and editors and mentors who have been in the industry for years. And lastly evaluating myself and my writing as to how much I, as an author, has grown from the first piece I wrote to the current piece I have published.
Now, I, and many other authors have to compete with books, that are almost in a sense mass produced and that are deemed acceptable pieces of literature. That does make an author feel a bit dejected, that does make us question ourselves and whether or not the time, effort and blood placed into a manuscript is even worth it. Reader so easily voice, that we don’t write fast enough or that a particular author is only capable of publishing a novel once a year: And there is a very good reason for that, good things take time, we want to make sure we don’t push out something that’s going to be flat, one dimensional and unemotional.
And we are in the losing side here, because I see it so often when a really good book gets bashed down and really bad one gets praised. There are so many authors out there both new and experience that does not get the praise their work deserve.

It’s like a very good friend of mine said, “good writing should be like a movie for blind people.”

But we are also pressured against reader’s demand: Am I going to risk losing readers, and take the time to produce a novel to the best of my abilities, however long that may be- or am I going to give into the demand of the industry and produce something flat, quick and easy, with no flavor or substance?

What things would you change if you were starting over?
Not a lot, I would for one spend more time establishing a readership and interacting with more readers before I released my first book, but again it comes back to time. Writing a novel takes up a lot of time, establishing a readership and maintaining that readership via social media is a whole job in itself, so where do you draw the line, where do you find the balance? Authors are still people, they still have families, jobs and responsibilities outside of the writing world. Even as a full-time author I find this very difficult to balance. So now as the industry has changed; it crucial for any new author to establish a readership before they have their first book out in the publics’ hands.

What has been your biggest challenge?  And biggest victory as an author – other than publishing that is? Is it see your genre expand?

Biggest challenge: Making sure my next book exceeds the one before it, Good, great, I’ve written a good book I can be proud of, now comes the next novel. Reader’s expectations. This always guts me during the writing process. The fear that this new book might not live up to the hype of its predecessor. And it’s both real and healthy, it encourages me to strive for better, to work harder, not to have the plot run away with me and high-jack the story to a point where it can’t be saved, and lastly writer’s block and writer’s burn out.

Biggest victory as an author: I’m discovering who I am, learning more about myself and what I am capable of, how talented I am and recognizing myself worth, but still be able to stay humble throughout this process because trust me, it can go to your head.

Where do you see ebooks and yourself in the future?

To grow more as a writer, to one day hopefully become a full-time writer in the horror genre and be successful in it.
As for ebooks in the future, one can only hope that we find some way to better protect our work against piracy and plagiarism, as with the advance of technology, there are its disadvantages; illegal distribution of books and selfishly stealing others work is a  threat to both writers and the industry. With ebooks being so easily distributed as they are in the numerous ways they can be scattered throughout the big web. It’s hard to keep track of where they end up and how to protect
them.

Jay Northcote

✍From Jay Northcote, author of Nothing Serious and the Housemates series and many more:

My first experiences in publishing were with Dreamspinner Press almost three years ago. They published in paperback and eBook format, but the vast majority of my sales were eBooks.

I made the switch to self-publishing about a year into my career as an author. With it being so easy to self-publish eBooks in particular (although it’s also easy to publish paperbacks through Createspace) I didn’t see that there was much benefit for me to stay with a publisher once I had a readership.

Even in the relatively short time that I’ve been publishing, the industry has changed a lot. The market for our genre is growing, but is also getting exponentially more crowded. It’s hard for authors to get noticed. Kindle Unlimited and the huge number of indie authors have driven prices down—which has a knock on, negative impact on author earnings. However, the rise in popularity of eBooks has allowed me to have a career as an author that I would otherwise never have had. I don’t believe that I would ever have considered writing as a full-time job if it hadn’t been for the boom in the e-book market and the subsequent growth of small presses and Indies. I count myself extremely lucky to have found my readership and to be able to do this as my job. I’m grateful to all my readers for making this possible.

It’s hard to predict the future in such a volatile and rapidly changing market. Ebooks are here to stay, and I think subscription services like KU are too. Personally, I would like to see more consistency in eBook pricing across the industry. The 99c novels that dominate the charts are making it harder for authors to earn a living. But I’m hopeful that as long as I work hard and stay focused, I will be able to keep writing full-time for the foreseeable future.

As you all can see, their experiences run the spectrum, from self publishing to working with established publishers to using both methods of getting their stories to their audience.   All see the ebook as a format that’s here to stay.  But how will the market change? And how will the authors and publishers have to adapt to the changing market?  That remains to be seen.

Wulf Francu Godgluck

They come to me in the night, creeping into my head. Their voices are all different, their stories all dissimilar, but they keep saying the same thing…

“Show us, tell us to the world. Bring us into yours, and make us known.”

Then I sit and they take over. They tell their tales of love, loss and sinister misfortune, not all of them get a happy ending, but they are pleased when their part is written.

I sometimes find myself lost in my own mind; a world very similar to our own yet so different. Things don’t go bump in the night—they squeal, and crawl under your skin, making you grind your teeth, and your stomach turn over and put your nerves on edge. Then there’s the drama. Oh, the drama!

I write because I must! There is so much inside of me that needs to get out. So many stories to tell, characters that want to be heard, and hearts lost and won. Words and art are my way of bringing my world to others. I enjoy telling tales of the human condition but working in elements of the supernatural. Werewolves, Vampires, Zombies, Witches and the unexplainable all set against the human world or worlds of their own.

I was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, grew up in a working class family and enjoy writing, cooking and spending my husband’s money! Yeah I’m a cocky little brat too 🙂 (and proud of it, spankings included.)

A Melanie Release Day Review: The Disciple (The Wheel Mysteries #4) by Susan Laine

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

the-disciple-by-susan-laineGus Goodwin witnesses a young man acting strangely at his occult shop—and a day later the same youth is found brutally murdered at a secluded Radical Faerie sanctuary in the mountains. Gus and his private detective boyfriend, Niall Valentine, once again find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery.

First to cross their path is Professor Alex Kittridge, Gus’s ex-boyfriend. Then into the picture stumbles Autumnsong, the biggest enigma they’ve ever encountered, to complicate the already confusing case. As Gus and Niall try to decipher the meaning of the cryptic poems left at the murder scenes, their pasts not yet laid to rest put a strain on their relationship.

Gus and Niall must uncover a slew of secrets within a spiritual group of queer social rebels before the vile killer strikes again—or the investigation could very well end up being their last.

The fourth book in The Wheel Mysteries by Susan Laine, The Disciple, finds Gus Goodwin and Niall Valentine one year into their  relationship.  Each book in the series has a Wiccan holiday at its center and for The Disciple, its Lughnasadh or Lammas. Laine intends for the series to run the length of the Wiccan sabbat or holiday calendar so we have a ways to go yet.  Lucky us!

I have long adored this series, not only for its characters and its murder mysteries but for its accurate use of the Wiccan religion.  Wiccan beliefs are beautifully interwoven throughout the story, including its connections to nature, practices…its a lovely way for those unfamiliar with this religion to meet it.  And through Gus Goodwin a Wiccan, whose nonjudgemental mind and sharp intelligence, often brings us into learning about other forms of pagan religions as well.  This time it is the Radical Faeries, another group that gets a compassionate and open-minded treatment from Laine.  At his side?  His  fiance’, P.I Niall Valentine, who’s mind has become more accepting while remaining just as suspicious as it needs to be.  They are a great combination.

Unfortunately, a member of this group has been murdered  and that brings our favorite couple into the investigation.

Gus and Niall’s relationship is always a work in progress, a factor that makes them and their partnership believable and feel real.  They fight,  make up, have doubts, and work through their issues like mature adults.  I love that.  Plus their sex scenes are very hot!  But its as a couple I appreciate them so much.  Their love and appreciation for each other shines off the page.  That also improves with each story as their love has deepened and gotten stronger as its been tested with each murder case and crisis.

Laine doesn’t disappoint us here with the mysteries either.  We find out about the murders, the culprits and maybe something far more sinister. It did feel a little long towards the end.  It felt as though it had wrapped up only to continue on.  But then we get something so marvelous waiting at the end.  No spoilers but oh how I loved this book!  I had no idea that was going to happen.  I was stunned with joy.

Love murder mysteries?  How about  romance too?  Here’s a whole series to gobble up!  Start at the beginning and work your way through until you reach The Disciple.  I highly recommend them all.  Susan Laine has laid the ground work for the next book to come and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us there.  I wonder if it will be out by Yule?  That’s the next Wiccan holiday on the calendar!  I’ll be waiting.

A Caryn Review: One Pulse Anthology

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

one-pulse-anthologySince the shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, people worldwide have donated a total of more than 23 million dollars to the OneOrlando Fund set up to benefit the victims and their families.  It seems like a lot of money, but between the number of people affected, and the severity of their injuries – mental and physical – that money will be exhausted fairly soon.  Also, after the initial outcry and horror that such a thing could have happened, and for such a reason, the shooting has faded out of the headlines.  But for those who were directly affected, and for all people in the LGBTQ spectrum, the shooting is still at the forefront of their thoughts, and fears, and worries.  So I was very pleased to see Dreamspinner Press put out this anthology to raise money for various LGBT organizations in central Florida, and I jumped at the chance to review it.  Dreamspinner also has another anthology coming out in time for the 2016 holiday season, that will also benefit the same charities.

At first, I planned to do a short review on each story individually, but at a total of 31 stories (and almost 200,000 words) that just wasn’t possible.  The stories are written by a combination of well known and lesser known authors from Dreamspinner’s ranks, and run the gamut of genres.  There are contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, historical, and sci-fi works.  Most are romances, but some are not.  Most are M/M pairings, but there was also one F/F and one M/M/M/M.  Some stories were extremely good, some less so, but there was only one that I had to DNF.  My favorite was The Tithe by K.C. Burn, which was one of the fully original stories, but there were several that were in the various universes created by the authors in other published works (like Edmond Manning’s They Danced which tells another tale of the Lost and Founds, which would not have made much sense to me if I hadn’t read one of them first).  The stories ranged from1 star to 5 star ratings, and overall the anthology really is more of a 3 star read, but I give it an extra star because of the generosity of the authors and the other people from Dreamspinner involved in putting it together.  I looked at the call for submissions, and they were due only a month after the shooting itself, which is an incredibly short period of time to write something really good, so I actually expect the next anthology to be even better.

I also hope that there will be a little more detail of which organizations the money will be going towards in the next anthology.  Overall, I do recommend this collection, especially for those who like to read shorter stories.  I plan on buying the next anthology when it’s available.

The cover art, by Paul Richmond, really fits with the title of the anthology and the reasons it was written.  I like the symbolism of one pair of hands holding and caring for another, checking a pulse as a nod to the name of the nightclub, and the rainbow coloring for Pride.

A Jeri Release Day Review: Turn the World Upside Down by Nyrae Dawn

Rating: 4.5 Stars out of 5

turn-the-world-upside-downOne of the things I love about young adult or new adult (YA/NA) books is that there is so much story there. Because they are generally about younger people- no longer “kids”, but people on the cusp of adulthood- there is very little, if any sex. And while I love a good sex scene in a book, when there isn’t that page filler to fall back on, the reader gets more story. More thoughts, more feelings, more people around the characters we are reading about. And this book had all of the thoughts, feelings and people that made it such a great book.

Hunter is pissed off at the world. After realizing a betrayal by his father, he blames himself for not seeing what was right there. So he is mad. REALLY mad. When that anger causes him to trash school property and accidentally hit a teacher, his mother brings him to New Horizons- an inpatient facility for teens- as a last resort. Hunter resorts to begging, but through her tears, his mom makes him check in.

Although he vows to himself to just get through his “time” at New Horizons, he slowly begins to come out of his shell. He finds the facility much like high school, with the popular and unpopular kids. And while he was known as a popular kid before, it is with the unpopular misfit kids that he finds himself. And Stray.

Stray. I fell in love with him almost immediately. A foster child who is a cutter, his foster parents sent him there for help. He doesn’t believe they will always be his foster parents though. Because people always leave him. But even though he believes that, he does everything to show his friends how much he cares about them. Even the new guy Hunter.

This book was a journey of self discovery and acceptance for Hunter. They incremental ways he realized small things about himself which joined together so that he could learn big things about himself were so well thought out, so introspective, so heart breaking. People immediately think sad when they hear the word depression. They don’t think anger, rage, self loathing. But it absolutely can be that and Nyrae Dawn shows it beautifully.

Ms Dawn does not shy away from the realities of mental illness at all. There was not glossing over of the ugly, no miraculous recoveries. In fact, this book had me in tears more that once. Because it was just so real.

This could be a tough read for some, but it is so worth it. Hunter and Stray crawl right into your heart- as do the rest of their friends.

A Melanie Release Day Review: Timing (Timing #1) by Mary Calmes

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

timingStefan Joss just can’t win. Not only does he have to go to Texas in the middle of summer to be the man of honor in his best friend Charlotte’s wedding, but he’s expected to negotiate a million-dollar business deal at the same time. Worst of all, he’s thrown for a loop when he arrives to see the one man Charlotte promised wouldn’t be there: her brother, Rand Holloway.

Stefan and Rand have been mortal enemies since the day they met, so Stefan is shocked when a temporary cease-fire sees the usual hostility replaced by instant chemistry. Though leery of the unexpected feelings, Stefan is swayed by a sincere revelation from Rand, and he decides to give Rand a chance.

But their budding romance is threatened when Stefan’s business deal goes wrong: the owner of the last ranch he needs to secure for the company is murdered. Stefan’s in for the surprise of his life as he finds himself in danger as well.

First Edition published by Dreamspinner Press, 2010.

Timing by Mary Calmes is that wonderful Mary Calmes story that you hope for every time you dive into one of her romances.  Its a love story that, no matter how many times you have read it, whether in 2010 or 2016, still makes you fall deeply in love with its characters and their relationship and the road they take to their happily ever after.

Stefan Joss, the perfect Mary Calmes character we know we will see,  is going to help his best friend Charlotte get married, even though he will have to face her brother Rand, a person he’s been actively hostile towards since they met in college.  Rand (the handsome, virile cowboy with secrets of his own) has been waiting for Stefan Joss to arrive.  Rand has his own agenda.  Plus there’s more story threads than usual.  A murder mystery, clues thrown around this tale and a villain to reveal before all can find their wonderfully satisfying HEA or is it HFN?

What I’ve always enjoyed is the relationships in a Calmes story.  Here its between Charlotte and Stefan, a true tight-knit unit as well as Stefan and Rand, and then others as secondary characters are swirled into the mixture.  The author is able to convey the sense of closeness between Charlotte and Stefan, their dependency upon each other and love.  You care as much about her and her happiness as you do about the main couple.  Calmes’ ability to pull the reader into each scene along with our emotions, and connect us with her characters and their lives is ever present here.

When Timing first came out, we thought that was it for Stefan and Rand.  Now we know that there’s two more books to follow.  A sequel already published and a third on the way.  Be still my happy heart.  There can never be enough Timings for me.  Once you read it I think you’ll agree.

Cover art by Reese Dante is lovely, I love the updated cover.

An Alisa Release Day Review: A-Viking by Kiernan Kelly

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

a-viking-by-kiernan-kellyWhat’s a Viking to do when he ends up on a Florida beach, surrounded by a world he doesn’t understand, with a hyperactive stockbroker as his only guide? Go back to Chase’s hotel, naturally. Chase thinks Bjorn is eccentric at best, a lunatic at worst, or just maybe the real thing: a Viking from the days of yore. It isn’t easy for Bjorn to admit, but he needs Chase’s help to navigate the confusing modern age. While Chase is trying to clean Bjorn up and help him fit in, Bjorn’s sworn enemy also makes the trek through time. Jorund is eager to plunder this new land and finish the job of killing Bjorn’s family line, all in one blow. Bjorn and Chase will have to set aside their vast differences and work together if either of them wants to survive.

This was a nice quick read.  Bjorn and Chase are both greatly confused when they meet on the beach.  Both try to find explanations in their own minds of how or why the other is acting so strange.

Both of these characters are wonderful.  Both would be considered work-a-holics in their own times, but soon realize that life is worth more than that.  I loved how both of these characters interacted with each other and how scared Chase was that Bjorn would disappear just like Jorund did.  Seeing these characters together in the future was a wonderful ending.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is nice and catches your eye.
