A MelanieM Review: Night and Day by Rowan Speedwell

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Night and DayNate Pederowski is about as far down as he can go when he’s tipped to a job as a singer in a speakeasy. Dishonorably discharged for being queer, broke and homeless during the Great Depression, Nate is embittered and lonely. The club’s handsome owner, Rick Bellevue, and his sister Corinna are wowed by Nate’s voice and offer him the job.

But the Starlight Lounge is much more than an ordinary supper club, and Rick and his sister much more than just the owners. It’s not ’til Nate gets caught up in a gangster’s plot that he discovers just what secrets they’re hiding. Nate’s life is going to change in ways he can scarcely imagine, let alone believe.

In Night and Day, Rowan Speedwell serves up a delicious tale full of elements guaranteed to intrigue and connect readers to this strange corner of a city gripped by the Great Depression.  Its absolutely necessary to set the mood by getting the setting right and the author does, from the clothes to the music of the era, its all here.

I loved the descriptions, so evocative you could smell the smokey air heavy from cigarettes, making the lighting even more dim and the setting more…something elusive, perhaps magical.  Like the club owners Rick and Corinna themselves with strange auras that surround them like a glow that can’t be extinguished.  There’s danger here as well, Prohibition…the usual marks that have a layer of extraordinary hostility about them.  If I sound vague its because I don’t wish to give  anything away.

But Speedwell manages to build up the tension along with the relationship between Nate and Rick, while giving us a wonderful picture of the times and songs of the past.  I loved that so much I had my iTunes out to listen to the songs Nate was singing, what a soundtrack they made.

Don’t take my word for it, pick it up and read it for yourself.  Its a 52 page wonderful way to pass the time.  One I definitely recommend.

Cover art by Brooke Albrecht is so beautiful.  It captures the mood and times perfectly right down to the font.  One of my favorites.

Stay With Me by Lily Adile Lamb
COVER ARTIST: Melissa Bell
RELEASE DATE: March 02, 2016

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words wants to welcome Lily Adile Lamb here today to share something about herself and her latest story, Stay With Me. Welcome, Lily.

I was born in Turkey and trained to be a nurse in UK. After some years of working as a counsellor and a nurse, one night I saw an advert on the paper seeking nurses to work in Western Australia. Before the paper could disappear, I grabbed the pen and paper that night to prepare my resume for the agency. It was the best decision I ever made because I also met my husband in Perth a few years later. Living in WA is a land of opportunity for me where I work full time as a nurse in day time and commenced writing LGBTQ stories later at night once my husband had retired to bed.

I support Marriage Equality and stand by same sex parents because I believe all a child needs is a loving and protective home. For me, an individual’s gender identity and expression are influenced by many factors including but not limited to, culture, religion, social restrictions, customs and beliefs…this makes one’s gender very diverse and fluid so my main focus in my stories are people who want to express themselves in the way they feel right for them and others.

I love writing multi-cultural stories of people from all backgrounds. The LGBTQ community is universal and exists in all countries and cultures. In some cultures, coming from an LGBTQ background is not easy and they are the people for whom I want to promote.

I decided to write Joseph’s story, following an article in the newspaper, about domestic violence in the home. I wanted to highlight some social issues in my story but also bring some sweetness as well so that readers can smile after reading the final page.

Joseph and Curtis are dear to my heart, partly because their story is my first story. The other reason is because they represent how hard I try to move forward in life. I worked hard and dreamed a dream to make it come true… the result is “Stay With Me”.

AboutTheBook

It has been weeks since Curtis first saw the young waiter with the haunted eyes. No matter how often he went to the café to find the right opportunity to introduce himself, that moment simply did not come that quickly. Joseph was aware of the gentle giant who quietly came to have his lunch and then left day after day. Fearing his father’s wrath and under his ever watchful eyes, he made no moves nor overtures. Until one day when the other man approaches to him… Hope can turn to love… interracial love.

Excerpt

Joseph did his best to keep a low profile all day. He washed the dishes in the evening, hoping his father would go home on his own and forget all about the gentle giant. But his father was sitting on the sofa, waiting for him. Whenever his father sat stoically without uttering a single word, he knew the man was quietly simmering.

Feeling his heart hammering as he dreaded what was about to come, Joseph took a shower. His feet felt like lead, not wanting to go back to the lounge room, but he knew if he didn’t, his father would soon look for him. As he sighed, Joseph left the security of his bedroom.

Joseph walked towards him to get his punishment over and done with.

“I don’t like how that man looks at you. He makes it obvious that he’s interested in you. Bastard, pervert. I don’t want you to look at him or smile at him anymore! I want him to get fed up coming to our corner, so you make sure you discourage him.”

Joseph stood in front of his father with his hands by his side, doing his best not to trigger the man’s anger any further. Staying silent always worked, unless he was asked to respond.

His father wrinkled his face in distaste. “You have no money, nowhere to go and no one to turn to. Remember that, boy.” Knowing the man was right, Joseph steeled his heart and continued to look at his father. He was startled when his father suddenly stood up.

His father brought his face close to him when he shouted, frightening him and making him shake all over. His father’s jeers made Joseph look down and protectively fold his arms in fear, in case the old man punched him in the stomach.

Humiliated and petrified, Joseph shook. Lifting his head as he was ordered, he bit his lip to control his facial expression. The harder he bit his bottom lip, the more he concentrated on the sting. When his father yelled at him so forcefully that spittle landed on Joseph’s face, Joseph felt too frightened to wipe it away. Hating the man’s sudden silence, Joseph’s insides quivered, not knowing what would come next.

His father snorted and pushed him away as he spoke. “Just go to your room. The sight of your face turns my stomach.” Feeling worthless and ugly, Joseph bowed his head and left the room. He made sure he closed the door softly behind him.

He sat quietly on his bed, trying to swallow his panic and slow down his rapidly beating heart. His stomach ached from stress, and he couldn’t stop shaking. Tensing his body to ward off shaking but failing so miserably, Joseph clenched his fists hard. Years of beatings and punishments had left Joseph scarred deep inside, to the point that he adapted some coping strategies that caused more physical pain to distract him from inner turmoil. Feeling the pain of his nails digging deeper into his palms, he felt breathing was somewhat easier.

After a while, he felt calmer as he reassured himself his father wasn’t coming. Once the house was quiet, Joseph allowed his tears to roll down his face. When his sobs became louder, he quickly bit his hand to dampen the noise.

Once his tears eventually dried, Joseph raked his hands down his face and tried to breathe slowly and deeply to calm himself. Joseph was aware that he’d lost all confidence in himself.

A Paul B Release Day Review: Patience (Forbes Mates #2) by Grace R. Duncan

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

PatienceJamie Ryan was almost ready to accept he’d never find his destined mate. They’re uncommon to begin with and same-sex versions downright rare. Since his gay best friend found a destined mate, Jamie figured he was out of luck. Until end of semester stress forces him to go through the full-moon shift early. Stuck in wolf form, he runs into none other than his destined mate. Who’s human.

Chad Sutton has always had good instincts. They served him well as a detective and continued on when he went private. Those instincts tell him there’s something about the dog that comes up to him while running away from animal control that isn’t quite right. He works to put the pieces together, but is unsuccessful until his dog turns into a human before his eyes.

Jamie has no idea what a shifter mate bite will do to a human. He’s terrified to try—and possibly kill his mate. They hunt together for answers while working together on a case for Chad. It’s easy to see they belong together, but Jamie fears the gods gave him someone he can’t keep.

This second book in the Forbes Mates series was enjoyable, even though I have not read the first book in the series. I thought the way that Jamie was stuck in his wolf form for three days after he met his mate was a unique twist. Jamie tries to everything possible to make sure he is around his mate, even if he has to resort to what most wolf shifters think is an insult—acting as a dog. The problems they have with the American wolf leadership sets up potential conflicts for later books in the series.

Also noteworthy is that the Roman pantheon of gods is used rather than the Greek one. Especially touching was the offering Chad and Jamie made in front of the shrine of Jupiter at the international wolf headquarters in Rome. The epilogue sets up an intriguing storyline for the next book in the series.

Reese Dante’s cover is a nice touch. It shows our Chad kissing Jamie on the forehead in the background with Jamie’s wolf watching in the foreground.

The Winds of Change and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Tree blownThe Winds of Change

Oh the winds of change are blowing so strong these days whether we want them to or not.  Several days ago, a storm came through our area, one that had devastating repercussions for the Midwest and southeast regions of our country.   For us?  Some flooding and lost power.  Nothing on the enormous level that occurred out there.  But across the street several old towering trees uprooted and fell over, ones that were here for as long as I could remember (my parents built this house), trunks at least 2 to 3 feet in diameter.

It felt as though I had lost old friends, I know the local wildlife did.  The hawks that used it to nest in, the Pilated Woodpeckers that loved it so and will have to move on  and all those  squirrel from the Grey Squirrels to our Flying Squirrels who will have to relocate. I hope they moved in time.

Those bare spots haunt me as the saws and lumber men my neighbor hired  did their job quickly, leaving nothing at all behind.  What will happen in their absence? What will fill in those holes? Will the squirrels take care of it or the neighbors?  I’m betting on the squirrels.

Changes are happening in the book world as well, the winds blowing hard there too.  Publishing houses disappearing, new ones taking root, others morphing to include different presses and audiobooks (becoming more popular here with us too)…proving even as change is hard, even painful, its necessary to survive in these times.

Nature abhors stagnation and will force a change to break it up, everywhere we look change is upon us.  Some gentle, some harsh.  Some welcome, and some…well, some we all could do without.

Hopefully the changes coming to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words will be welcome.  I’m working on them.  I need more time…always more time, a scare commodity for me at the moment.

Meanwhile enjoy the upcoming week.  Its full of wonderful books, author guest blogs and reviews.  Enjoy and happy reading.

A Stella Review: The Queen & the Homo Jock King (At First Sight #2) by T.J. Klune

RATING 5 out of 5 stars

The Queen and the Homo Jock KingDo you believe in love at first sight?

Sanford Stewart sure doesn’t. In fact, he pretty much believes in the exact opposite, thanks to the Homo Jock King. It seems Darren Mayne lives for nothing more than to create chaos in Sandy’s perfectly ordered life, just for the hell of it. Sandy despises him, and nothing will ever change his mind.

Or so he tells himself.

It’s not until the owner of Jack It—the club where Sandy performs as drag queen Helena Handbasket—comes to him with a desperate proposition that Sandy realizes he might have to put his feelings about Darren aside. Because Jack It will close unless someone can convince Andrew Taylor, the mayor of Tucson, to keep it open.

Someone like Darren, the mayor’s illegitimate son.

The foolproof plan is this: seduce Darren and push him to convince his father to renew Jack It’s contract with the city.

Simple, right?

Wrong.

What amazing book! TJ Klune is become an author to simply trust, he never disappointed my expectations. And this book had huge expectations to not break. And I can say at some point during the reading I was a little worried.

The Queen & The Homo Jock King is not for everyone, cause the author is not for everyone. TJ is too many times over the top, he doesn’t write funny books, his stories are hilarious and deep and unbelievable, each one I’ve read, no exception. If you already read TJ you know what to expect, I thought I was ready for Sandy but I was very wrong.

I was so happy to meet again all the characters of the first book, Tell me It’s Real, Vince and Paul, Charlie, Nana and the others. Paul and Vinny are going to marry and Sandy and Darren are going to be their best men. Meanwhile Sandy needs to seduce Darren to not lose the club he works at as Helena at the city council expenses. But of course Sandy being Sandy….

It’s a joy to read a new TJ book, each time I spend a couple of days laughing so much, usually my tummy will hurt at the end (and I almost peed myself this time around too!). It’s one continuous line of funny sentences, there is no pause. I have to say it was the first time I didn’t read one of his books in a one stand session. At times it overwhelmed me (in a good way), the dialogues were too much to take all together so I had to stop and read something else. I started to be concerned and ready to be let down. It took two weeks to finish it and honestly? They were the best two (reading time) weeks of the last period. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure it was better this way, I could fully enjoy the story and each moment, avoiding missing things due to my voraciousness at eat up every new book I have on my hands.

I got my dose of Sandy/Helena and it was amazing. The tension between Darren and him almost killed me. There wasn’t a thing or a word I didn’t like. Simply perfect.

Just a little note. If you have read Tell Me It’s Real and don’t like it, don’t even think about reading this second one, it is so much worse/better.

The cover art by Reese Dante is great, I can easily see  Sandy/Helena in it. Just right!

A Paul B Review: Love Simplified (Game, Set, Match #2) by Teegan Loy

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Love SimplifiedJalen Marten met the love of his life Austin Suter one day during high school when Austin Suter hit a tennis ball into Jalen.  A few months later, Austin made his professional tennis debut at the Australian Open.  Instead of immediately going on tour, Austin returned to high school and Jalen.  As graduation approaches, Austin leaves for Europe and to play in the French Open and Wimbledon.  On graduation day, Jalen’s mother surprises him with a ticket to Paris to join Austin at the French Open and the summer tennis season.

Although welcomed by Austin and his mother, Jalen’s appearance is not accepted by everyone.  Austin’s father and his publicist are afraid if word got out that Austin has a boyfriend touring around with him.  They do everything to make sure that Jalen is as marginalized as possible.  They ask Jalen not to sit in the player’s family box.  They ask him to disguise his appearance as much as possible.  However, the young men do everything possible to spend as much time together as they can, thanks in part to Austin’s mother.  She runs interference as much as she can.  The tipping point is when Austin has a fashion shoot with a famous designer.  A male model does not show up and the photographer drafts Jalen to fill in for him.  The photograph that is the center of the campaign ends up being one of the two men in a smoldering pose.

Austin does well at both the French Open and Wimbledon.  His tennis star is clearly rising.  Jalen’s presence on tour worries not only Austin’s father but Jalen himself.  As the pressure from Austin’s father increases, Jalen knows his presence is causing tension in the Suter family.  Jalen leaves right before the biggest match for Austin—the final of the US Open.  He first heads home to talk with his mother, the leaves for Los Angeles to pursue his passion—music.

When he arrives in LA, Jalen meets a young man who finds him a job as a barista at a friend’s coffee shop and a place to crash if he agrees to help with general maintenance of the apartment complex he manages.  It appears that Evan has issues of his own to work through.  While Evan has his business ventures, the relationship he has with his father influences most things he does.  However, Evan proves to be a friend to Jalen and provides help by introducing him to a record producer.  However, the greatest assistance Evan provides comes at a holiday party for the complex.   With Evan’s help, Jalen’s previous doubts disappear and seems to head toward a happily ever after.

While I enjoyed this book, it was not quite the book that I expected.  The first quarter of the book started just about how I thought it would go.  But once Jalen leaves Austin behind in New York, the story diverted into more of a character study of both Jalen and Evan.  While being mentioned in passing several times, Austin does not reappear until the last 15 percent of the book.  Although its mentioned by Jalen’s mother or Austin’s mother that Austin’s game is suffering because of Jalen’s absence, it would have been nice to have some scenes of Austin while on the tennis tour without Jalen.

The book does portray the over-involvement some parents take in their children’s tennis careers that we have heard about in the media.  Personally, I would have preferred more time on tour with Jalen and Austin and a little less time of Jalen’s self-discovery in Los Angeles.

The cover art by Maria Fanning is perfect for the book.  It depicts Jalen and Austin above a tennis net and the Eiffel Tower.  It is well done.

Love Complicated (Game, Set, Match #1)

Love Simplified (Game, Set Match #2)

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Pawsitively in Love by M.J. O’Shea

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Pawsitively in LoveWhat Austin Lloyd lacks in academics, he makes up for in his love of the animals who frequent his pet salon. He’s not lucky in romance, though, and his family would like him to settle down with a good man. Austin—and his golden retriever, Maggie—couldn’t agree more.

Evan Partridge isn’t good at letting people in. His messy family life and the past that’s shaped him aren’t worth bringing up. But his pug, Dexter, sure likes the pet salon owner.

Austin and Evan get off to a rough start, but being friends soon turns into something more. Unfortunately, Evan’s secretive behavior nearly does the relationship in, and the budding love affair almost crashes and burns when Evan’s troubled sister shows up on his doorstep.

Not speaking to each other is killing them both, but Evan doesn’t know how to keep Austin and help his sister at the same time. He just knows he has to try. Winning back Austin’s trust back, however, is going to take a whole lot of work.

Austin Lloyd is a cutie. He’s also smart and ambitiou, and though he didn’t go to college, he owns his dog-grooming business, Pawsitively Purrfect. After a long, stressful day, when the owner of a pug puppy fails to show up to claim him, Austin is spitting mad and takes it out on the owner as soon as the guy arrives after closing time.

Evan Partridge is a dark-haired, good-looking college professor who’s also had a bad day. He was delayed by a staff meeting, and not one, but both of his cars broke down today. He literally ran to pick up Dexter and then was berated by a guy who he would have considered cute in other circumstances. Now he can’t wait to get away.

An inauspicious start to a romance, but no fear, the author arranges an unexpected meeting in the grocery store, and the two guys decide to call a truce and start again. Right from the beginning, Evan tells Austin that he doesn’t do relationships. He’s not good with people and doesn’t want to cause any problems. Austin accepts that, and the two begin a friendship—a friendship that eventually leads to more, and they seem to be headed for their HEA as they create a little family with Dexter the pug and Austin’s young golden retriever, Maggie.

But fate has other plans, and when Evan’s emotionally damaged and very dependent sister arrives with all her worldly possessions and then takes one look at Austin and decides she hates him, everything goes topsy-turvy, and their sweet little bubble of happiness bursts.

Can the insurmountable be surmounted? After all, Evan has practically raised his sister, and he’s helpless in the face of her unhappiness. But he’s more than unhappy himself, and he knows Austin must be devastated because they haven’t spoken in weeks—ever since Evan pushed him away after his sister’s arrival. For a while, it seems impossible to believe these two can find their way back to friendship, trust, and a happy ending.

I enjoyed this story immensely. It’s light and sweet throughout most of the book, but there’s a ton of heartbreak once Evan’s sister arrives. It’s also got lots of UST, and I personally love unresolved sexual tension in my stories. The guys don’t make it to the bedroom until the 75% mark, but this story isn’t all about the sex anyway. It’s about forming relationships—friendship, trust, and love—and the author does a wonderful job with that. If you like a sweet love story, especially one with adorable pets, an MC who is clueless about his own needs and how to say no to family members who drive him crazy, and an MC who is willing to love and forgive his man despite the obstacles thrown in their way, this is the story for you.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is pawsitively adorable and perfect for the story.

A MelanieM Review: The Winter Prince by R Cooper

Rating: 5 stars out of 5            ★★★★★

The Winter PrinceHis heart stolen by a powerful pari’s magic, a young prince’s veins slowly fill with ice. That is what the stories say. Three years have passed since, and all efforts to save Kisin have failed. He won’t survive another winter. To save the prince’s life, Razin, the court wizard and Kisin’s childhood friend, plans to seek out the pari. But unbeknownst to Razin, Kisin’s heart was never stolen; he gave it freely to escape the pain of impossible love—his love for Razin.

Razin won’t accept Kisin’s fate, for reasons obvious to anyone who knows anything of love. Kisin agrees to the desperate quest, out of duty and a need to protect Razin. But it isn’t long before Razin realizes saving his prince will require more than simply retrieving his heart. Razin will have to convince him to want it.

Sometimes when I’m reading a story by R Cooper I feel as though I’m drawn back into the past along with it, the words convey a tale that makes me feel so much a part of their lives and adventures.

The Winter Prince is another wonderful fairytale, with a cold, blue prince without a heart as its focus. Kisin is turning to ice and everyone assumes they know the cause but they are so wrong.  And one man closest to the prince, Razin who loves the Prince beyond all hope will do everything he can to save him.  Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Razin is a powerful mage in his own right but title. That’s part of the story as well.

R Cooper’s stories don’t unfold with haste but with a meaningful leisure.  The author builds the tales slowly,  upon scenes and history, upon the characters disclosures and moments of revelations that the reader, if they are patient, are rewarded with such gems of joy and magic along the  way.  I love it when I get the “aha, I see where you’ve been leading  us” moment, or the laughter that comes when an angle totally unexpected pops up.  But the clues are there if I hadn’t been paying attention to all the gorgeous work going on, the descriptions, the world building, the mythology…simply beautiful.

But its always the characters that bring me back.  R Cooper makes me understand the isolation at the heart of Kisin’s sexual innocence and  the deep pain that causes the grief the drives him to the desperation and worst decision of his life.  We will see the story from other points of view than his, from Razin’s as well.  I love the character of Razin.  His life is so different than that of the remote, lonely prince.  Razin was free in every way the Prince was not, in every way but one. I loved that you could see his pain and loss at his predicament too.  There are simply so many other wonderful characters that will flow in and around these two, two women in  particular, that will add their love and support in an astonishing way.

In the end, the magic of the story and the power of love kept me enthralled to the end.  Happy ever after?  Well, as much and as imperfectly perfectly so while staying true to the world they lived in.  I could see it and still be happy for them all.  Yes, I loved it.

Love R Cooper?  Are you a fan of fairytales and fantasy?  Here is another for your must read file.  I highly recommend it.

Cover art by Brooke Albreacht doesn’t have enough of that fantasy element to satisfy me here.  She could have done so much with the blue prince element and that was really lost.

A Lila Review: Out of Nowhere (Middle of Somewhere #2) by Roan Parrish

Rating: 5 stars out of 5               ★★★★★

Out of NowhereThe only thing in Colin Mulligan’s life that makes sense is taking cars apart and putting them back together. In the auto shop where he works with his father and brothers, he tries to get through the day without having a panic attack or flying into a rage. Drinking helps. So do running and lifting weights until he can hardly stand. But none of it can change the fact that he’s gay, a secret he has kept from everyone.

Rafael Guerrera has found ways to live with the past he’s ashamed of. He’s dedicated his life to social justice work and to helping youth who, like him, had very little growing up. He has no time for love. Hell, he barely has time for himself. Somehow, everything about miserable, self-destructive Colin cries out to him. But down that path lie the troubles Rafe has worked so hard to leave behind. And as their relationship intensifies, Rafe and Colin are forced to dredge up secrets that both men would prefer stay buried.

Colin Mulligan’s story runs concurrently with book one in the series. As we know, he’s an ace when cars are involved, but everything else in his life is a puzzle. When the story starts, we get immediately immersed into Colin’s rage and self-hate. We get to experience, first hand, how he deals with it and the extremes he gets into in order to find some peace. In that first scene, we get exactly who Colin is and what he things about himself.

After spending some time with his best friend, Colin finds himself in a local club looking for a hook-up. He first crossed paths with Rafe at the club, but goes with a different man instead. Even so, Rafe is there when Colin needed him even if he didn’t appreciate the help. The following day, Rafe founds a way to see Colin again and from that moment on, the road to their future starts.

From this point on, the reader gets to experience the ups and downs of Colin’s and Rafe’s relationship, the daily troubles, and how they deal with everything changing around them. They get to interact with a multitude of characters that would shape their path and change how they see their life worth.

This is a complicated story with complex characters, but in the end, we get a resolution that fits their growth. The MCs have a lovely relationship with a strong HFN and a positive outlook for their future. Yes, it’s filled with angst, hurt, pain, and many other dark aspects, but the MCs’ journey compensate for all their suffering.

Out of Nowhere has everything I like about a book. Dark and damaged characters, trials and tribulations, amazing chemistry and sex scenes, and the opportunity to see how hard the MCs work for their happiness. Plus, mentorship and charity programs. What else is to ask for? Older characters! Colin is thirty-six.

Disclaimer thought, I may, or may not have cried a little reading this book.

Well? Okay, going back to the beginning. I’m glad I survived book #1, In the Middle of Somewhere, which I rated 3.5 stars after considering a DNF. In that book, we met Colin through his younger brother’s eyes. And we get a little peek at Rafe. Neither is to say that Colin’s and Daniel’s relationship was not an easy one, but we learned from both books, that Colin was Daniel’s hero when they were younger.

The majority of Colin’s darkness comes from hating his brother, not for being gay, as Daniel see it, but of envy at Daniel’s courage. Colin’s self-hate absorbs all his time and thoughts, and it only gets worse when he acts on his desires. He pushes his physical boundaries with demanding exercise sessions, lack of sleep, and alcohol to numb his feelings.

His hopelessness makes him vulnerable to others, and he hates himself even more because of it.  He welcomes pain as a relief from life, no matter where it comes from. Until Rafe, literally, saves him. From their first encounter, we get to see Rafe’s need to help and Colin’s uneasiness. They recognized each other’s potential and want to do better for the other. Slowly, they started a relationship that tested them many times and only the tentative strings of their relationship kept them from falling apart.

I loved how Colin integrated himself into Rafe’s life and social work, even when his constant panic attacks threaten him at every turn. We see the internal and physical changes in Colin as the story progresses and have a chance to understand the man he had become over the years. The events told by Daniel during the first book, make a difference when told by Colin and we get to experience how this affected them and their family.

With love and understanding, Rafe gives Colin the strength he needs to come back to life. He’s forceful when he needs to, but he is the reason Colin take the first steps to recovery. He has his own problems, and we get to see them almost destroy him, but having Colin on his side and depending on him allowed Rafe to let go and be rescued in return.

Between all this pain, hurt, and angst, there’s a group of great supporting characters that would steal your heart if you let them. They are the perfect antidote to all the moodiness in this story. And for those who loved book #1, there’s a lot more Daniel and Rex to fill your greedy hearts.

Great cover by AngstyG. It shows an important moment in the story. Plus, the darkness represents Colin’s inner troubles and Rafe’s past perfectly.

A Lila Audiobook Review: Eyes Only for Me by Andrew Grey and Tristan James (Narrator)

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

eyes only for me audiobookClayton Potter has been in love with his straight friend, Ronnie, for years, but he knew he didn’t have a chance, or that’s what he though. The book starts with Clay taking care of a business party for Ronnie and making it a success. We get to see Ronnie’s way with women and the relationship Clay and Ronnie share with their gym partners.

From the moment Clay gets the call about his father, Ronnie takes charge, helping him get to the hospital. He’s the support Clay needed and always craved, which confuses Clay. Ronnie booked a hotel for them to spend the night and that’s when their friendship starts to change.

The next morning, they deal with the consequences of their time together as best as they could. Clay felt Ronnie’s distance but understood his reactions. With Clay staying behind to take care of his father, they have the opportunity to think about their next move.

For the rest of the story, we get to see how they struggled to save their friendship and to be what the other needs. Their pasts and current situations take a toll on their new relationship, and they had to make the decision to give up on each other or fight through.

Eyes Only for Me wasn’t what I expected. The blurb sounded interesting, and I was ready for a nice friends-to-lovers story, instead, I got to read about two men that happened to be in the right bed at the right moment. I can say that this story didn’t work for me.

In my opinion, the MCs have two personalities each. One when they are having sex and another when they are not. There’s nothing wrong with having or giving control to your partner during sex, but the way Clay treated Ronnie felt uncomfortable. From their very first time, Clay is cornering Ronnie and acting as if Ronnie had been involved with men before.

Yes, some descriptions let the reader know that Ronnie wasn’t getting what he wanted with women, but Clay’s magically transformed him. For me, Ronnie went with the flow just because he could. I didn’t felt a connection between them other than in Clay’s musings. According to him, Ronnie was the type of partner he wanted, but that knowledge didn’t translate into the relationship.

Also, Ronnie’s memories about an event in his childhood felt unnecessary, and it’s a topic I don’t consider should be used to create tension between the characters or to be perhaps a reason Ronnie had never considered a relationship with a man.

The description of the settings and the characters were interesting and relatable. The writing is up to par. One thing the author was able to show very well was the friendship between the men, their gym trips, dinners, and breakfast meetings. We get to see all the personalities and how they interact. What they meant to each other and how far they would, or not, go for each other. And the way the author described how Ronnie’s mind works was credible.

Tristan James is one of my favorite MM narrators, and he definitely saved this book for me. If I had read the ebook, I’d probably had rate it a lot lower than three stars. As always, Tristan delivered an excellent performance. I enjoyed the way he made a distinction between Clay’s words and his narration. The female voices weren’t as perfect as the others, but that’s to be expected.

I loved the cover by L.C. Chase and the intensity of the characters. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see Clay and Ronnie in them.
