A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: I Heart Boston Terriers by Rick R. Reed

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

A sweet little snippet about love for a dog who needs a second chance and for a man who needs one as well.  In honor of the author’s Boston Terrier, Lily, who is well known to those of us who follow his social media, Mr. Reed has created a darling love story sure to whet the appetite of those who love MM romance and those who love their pups.

Aaron accompanied his sister to the pet store to buy supplies for her cat and they both fell in love with a timid little Boston Terrier who was quaking in fear in her cage.  Aaron also caught the attention of the handsome guy who was volunteering with the Humane Society and between the two positive forces—man and beast—he was toast.  Even though he’s with his sister because his relationship broke up, and he’s virtually homeless and jobless, that cute guy did indeed catch his attention.

When he brings the dog home, her fear keeps her under his sister’s bed and out of Aaron’s arms.  Thankfully, whether appropriate or not, the good-looking volunteer calls him to see how Mavis the dog is doing, and one thing leads to another, and before you know it, the two men are out walking the dog and exploring their mutual attraction.  After a bit of trouble earlier in the day, Mavis already had two legs out the door—it seems she ate his sister’s Jimmy Choo shoes—an incredibly bad move, so a walk seems appropriate.  As the men walk, they talk, and again one thing leads to another, and they’re caught en flagrante when his sister returns home.

This is a very short story, but full of sweetness and possibility—both for the dog and for Aaron’s future.  The only negative for me is the behavior change in Aaron’s sister.  One day she encourages him to get the dog and insists it won’t be an issue, even though they’ll be sharing a studio apartment, and the next she’s totally against the dog and wants her returned. Granted, the shoes were a huge issue for her, but the way she continued to insist the dog be sent back seemed over-the-top.   I guess it was needed for plot flow but not my cuppa, so it kept my rating closer to a three.  On the other hand, I do think the story is well-worth reading, and I recommend it to brighten an otherwise gloomy day, especially for all dog lovers.

~~~~
The cover by Reese Dante features two handsome men whose pictures are superimposed over a foreground picture of a Boston terrier.  The word Heart in the title is also accompanied by a heart symbol so the cover does attract attention and it clearly represents the story.
A Lila Audiobook Review: Manny Get Your Guy (The Mannies #2) by Amy Lane and John Solo (Narrator)
Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
Starting over and falling in love.
Tino Robbins’s sister, Nica, and her husband, Jacob, are expecting their fifth child. Fortunately, Nica’s best friend, Taylor Cochran, is back in town, released from PT and in need of a job.
After years in the service and recovering from grave injury, Taylor has grown a lot from the callow troublemaker he’d been in high school. Now he’s hoping for a fresh start with Nica and her family.
Jacob’s cousin Brandon lives above the garage and thinks “Taylor the manny” is a bad idea. Taylor might be great at protecting civilians from a zombie apocalypse, but is he any good with kids?
Turns out, Taylor’s a natural. As he tries to fit in, using common sense and dry wit, Brandon realizes that Taylor doesn’t just love their family—he’s desperate to be part of it. And just like that, Brandon wants Taylor to be part of his future.
Manny Get Your Guy takes place about ten years later than the first book in the series. It took me a minute to get used to the changes in the characters, but a couple of pages in, I was back in their world. It was a refreshing change since most stories end with a HEA and we don’t get to experience their lives afterwards.
This story is a classic combination of Amy Lane and Dreamspun Desire. It’s over-the-top, soap opera-like, and perfect for a cute story with more than a simple romance. As readers, we get to be part of Brandon’s and Taylor’s path to happiness, without forgetting how they became the men we met. It’s a slow journey but an interesting one.
I like the MCs enemies-to-lovers story and how they fought their attraction in the beginning, even if short lived. Both characters are lovely and their support system complemented their relationship. As always, it’s nice having both POV; easier to see how they fall for each other.
The moments between the couples are great but those between Taylor and Brandon felt intimate and awe inspiring. There are lightheaded moments and many embarrassing tidbits. Overall, this is another winner for this author and series.
One thing I like about John Solo’s narrations is his consistency. As soon as I heard the voices, I could connect them with the characters in the previous book. He did an excellent job bringing everyone to life and making Brandon and Taylor the center of the story.
The cover by Paul Richmond fits the series and shows a happy version of Taylor. It reminds me of one of the characters in Days of Our Lives.
Leaning N
Everything’s bigger in Texas, including weddings. And misunderstandings.
Colorado wedding planner Mason O’Reilly lands a major contract: a two-hundred-guest wedding at the Leanin’ N Ranch, where his friends Ford and Stoney are working to provide a safe space for GLBT events. The Wright/Preston ceremony is a destination wedding, and as the grooms are from Texas, everything is done over the phone and email. There’s no way that could lead to trouble, right?
Oops.
Oil tycoon Noah Wright isn’t happy about the impending disaster, but he admires Mason’s quick thinking and grace under pressure. And that’s not all he likes about the out-and-proud wedding planner. Even though Mason’s interested in Noah, his Mr. Right can’t possibly be a rancher from Dallas.
Can he?
An Ali Release Day Review: Off the Beaten Path by Cari Z
Rating:  4 out of 5 stars
When Ward Johannsen’s little girl Ava shifted into a werewolf, she was taken into custody by the feds and shipped off to the nearest pack, all ties between father and daughter severed. Ward burned every bridge he had discovering her location, and then almost froze to death in the Colorado mountains tracking her new pack down. And that’s just the beginning of his struggle.
Henry Dormer is an alpha werewolf and an elite black ops soldier who failed his last mission. He returns home, hoping for some time to recuperate and help settle the pack’s newest member, a little pup named Ava who can’t shift back to her human form. Instead he meets Ward, who refuses to leave his daughter without a fight. The two men are as different as night and day, but their respect for each other strikes a spark of mutual interest that quickly grows into a flame. They might find something special together—love, passion, and even a family—if they can survive trigger-happy pack guardians, violent werewolf politics, and meddling government agencies that are just as likely to get their alpha soldiers killed as bring them home safely.
This was a unique take on the shifter world and I was engrossed in this story from beginning to end.  I read a lot of shifter books and I am always looking for something that I haven’t seen before and this book really fit the bill.  The world building was top notch and I felt the author did a very good job drawing the reader in to this hard scrabble world these werewolves live in.
In addition to the detailed and interesting world building. the author did a very complete job developing the characters.  I felt sorry for Ward right off and could understand his desperation to get to his daughter.  Henry was also well done and the two men were a great match for each other.  Their chemistry jumped off the pages and I was rooting for them the entire time.  There are a host of side characters and I also found them to be well done and their presence added to this plot.
If you’re looking for something creative and well written I would definitely recommend this story.  I’m not sure if this will be an ongoing series but I hope it is.  I would love to read more about these shifters.
This cover was done by Brooke Albrecht and I love it.  It fits the story perfectly and I think it’s visually gorgeous.
A MelanieM Release Day Review: Tramps and Thieves (Murder and Mayhem #2) by Rhys Ford
Rating: 5 stars out of 5
Whoever said blood was thicker than water never stood in a pool of it.
Retiring from stealing priceless treasures seemed like a surefire way for Rook Stevens to stay on the right side of the law. The only cop in his life should have been his probably-boyfriend, Los Angeles Detective Dante Montoya, but that’s not how life—his life—is turning out. Instead, Rook ends up not only standing in a puddle of his cousin Harold’s blood but also being accused of Harold’s murder…and sleeping with Harold’s wife.
For Dante, loving the former thief means his once-normal life is now a sea of chaos, especially since Rook seems incapable of staying out of trouble—or keeping trouble from following him home. When Rook is tagged as a murder suspect by a narrow-focused West L.A. detective, Dante steps in to pull his lover out of the quagmire Rook’s landed in.
When the complicated investigation twists around on them, the dead begin to stack up, forcing the lovers to work together. Time isn’t on their side, and if they don’t find the killer before another murder, Dante will be visiting Rook in his prison cell—or at his grave.
He’s back! That angst-filled, ready to run, totally addicting thief Rook Martin and the cop that loves him Dante Montoya in Tramps and Thieves, the second story in Rhys Ford’s Murder and Mayhem series.  Damn, am I happy about that!
Picking up from the tenuous beginnings of a relationship for himself and Dante amid the broken building of Rook’s business in book 1, Murder and Mayhem, Rook dives headlong into trouble by trying to pull off a prank and ends up falling on a corpse instead.  The complications and clues pointing back to Rook being not only involved in the crime but head suspect pile up immediately.  That pulls in his boyfriend and local detective Dante Montoya.
And where’s there’s Dante, there is also his wonderful Uncle Manny who now works for Rook, Rook’s crazy rich grandfather who engenders ambivalent feelings of love, hate and more from Rook, all the many other Martins…lazy, losers, haters, a few loving cousins, and a rich city’s worth of characters that flow out of the head of Ford and into this carnival of lies, double twists and turns, smoke games and so much more.  I love the way the author keeps us guessing along with Rook and Dante.  Ford builds suspense and anticipation into every turn of this murder mystery, there’s so many layers here, made up of pain-filled pasts, twisted family dynamics and more.
But back to the superb characterizations.  You can’t choose just one to highlight because Ford has crafted each so carefully.  Doesn’t matter whether it’s Dante, or Rook, or Manny or the frightening grandfather.  They have an authentic depth to them, they ooze passion and love and fear and yes, intelligence.  I believe in these people.  You will too.
Finally, Ford give a nod to one of my favorite books (if you haven’t read any of Dashiell Hammett’s stories do so now) and movies (Humphrey Bogart, I’ll say no more), The Maltese Falcon with an element here in the story.  Be still my heart.  It’s just perfect.
Can you read this as a stand alone?  Maybe.  But why would you?  Go read the first story, Murder and Mayhem and then run and pick up the marvelous Tramps and Thieves.  I can’t wait to see where Rhys Ford is taking this series next.  It and it’s author are both highly recommended.  But if I could put in a word for a romance for Uncle Manny please?
Cover art by Reece Notley.  Again its Dante, not Rook on the cover.  I miss Rook but he would be a hard character to find a match for.  Dante is much more easily matched.
Series Murder and Mayhem #2
Characters Rook Stevens, Dante Montoya
A MelanieM Review: Murder and Mayhem (Murder and Mayhem #1) by Rhys Ford
Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
Dead women tell no tales.
Former cat burglar Rook Stevens stole many a priceless thing in the past, but he’s never been accused of taking a life—until now. It was one thing to find a former associate inside Potter’s Field, his pop culture memorabilia shop, but quite another to stumble across her dead body.
Detective Dante Montoya thought he’d never see Rook Stevens again—not after his former partner’d falsified evidence to entrap the jewelry thief and Stevens walked off scot-free. So when he tackled a fleeing murder suspect, Dante was shocked to discover the blood-covered man was none other than the thief he’d fought to put in prison and who still made his blood sing.
Rook is determined to shake loose the murder charge against him, even if it means putting distance between him and the rugged Cuban-Mexican detective who brought him down. If one dead con artist wasn’t bad enough, others soon follow, and as the bodies pile up around Rook’s feet, he’s forced to reach out to the last man he’d expect to believe in his innocence—and the only man who’s ever gotten under Rook’s skin.
With Murder and Mayhem, Rhys Ford rolls out another great series and another set of spectacular characters.  With storythreads convoluted as hell, and characters with pasts as twisted and hard to untie as wet sailor knots,  this is a story you just need to dive into and enjoy for the sexy, wild knuckle ride it is.
Starting with the fascinating character of Rook Martin, a high class thief trying to go straight, Rook has a background as startling as any you’ve might have come by.  I could go into it here by why spoil the pleasures that Ford has in store for the reader and Dante Montoya as he investigates Rook Martin’s background and stumbles into one shock after another.
So many pleasures here.  The characterizations are outstanding.  From the Cuban-Mexican detective Dante Montoya and his Uncle Manny, who I adore, his ginger haired partner Harry,  to the almost tangible heat that builds up between Rook and Dante, pulling them closer and closer until it ignites off the page.  And all the while a killer is loose, stalking a prey across the pages.  And the killer’s identity will keep you guessing right up until the reveal.
This is a marvel of a story.  I loved every minute of it.  The writing is smooth, action packed, vivid and everything I would want (and have come to expect from Rhys Ford, a go to author for me).  Grab this up and get reading.  You’re going to love it.
Cover art by Reece Notley is wonderful and works for the character of the detective
A Karen Review: Between a Rock and a Hard Place (London Lads #5) by Clare London
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
This is the fifth and final book in the London Lads series.  As with the others, it is a quick, short read, with a lot of humor, little angst, and a sweet – if predictable – happy ever after.
The timeline of this story was quite different: the entire thing takes place in a period of about 12 hours, while Garry is waiting in Glasgow airport to meet up with Will, who doesn’t show up until the very end of the book.  He has to endure the agony of uncomfortable chairs, overpriced airport food, incessant noise, and stressed out, rude travelers.  Most of the humor is about being stuck in an airport, a feeling that most of us can definitely sympathize with!
Garry and Will have been best friends for years, and though both men are gay, they haven’t ever dated.  They spend all their time with each other, to the point that their office mates assume they are a couple.  When Will is put up for promotion, Garry is thrilled for him, until he finds out the new job will be in New York.  Will has been in New York for several weeks, and is flying back to Glasgow to meet Garry for their traditional holiday with their university friends, and Garry is anxiously waiting for him at the airport, trying to figure out what he really feels for Will, and what he’s going to do about it.
Despite trying to mind his own business, Garry wakes from an uncomfortable nap to find 7 year old Emily and her older brother Max have decided to adopt him.  Garry doesn’t do kids, but they stick to him like burrs and he can’t shake them off.  For hours.  The kids almost seem like a figment of his imagination, or a bad dream, because they are shockingly intuitive at times, and as irritating as the rest of the airport at others.  They end up drawing him out of himself, and he talks about Will, and by the end of the long wait, he has finally managed to not only clarify how he feels about Will – he loves him and is in love with him – but has decided that he needs to man up and act on the feeling.  So all is prepared for a wonderful reunion when Will finally arrives.
I have enjoyed the stories, but I still think they would be much better combined into a single book, instead of separate short stories.  I don’t think they are worth the price individually, but as a compilation, I would have enjoyed them.
Cover art by Valerie Tibbs is OK, and fits with the rest of the series.
Tufted & Tatted (Peckers #4) by Jacques N. Hoff
Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Jacques N. Hoff here today on the Tufted & Tatted Peckers tour!
THE UC PECKERS WORLD
Welcome to the world of Undercover Peckers. Where love is instant the moment you find your mate. Where there’s only one true pecker for every man. Where the sex is so hot it will singe your tailfeathers. Where bird watching is both a recreation and a preoccupation—that usually leads to feathers flying. Let Simon and his avian shifter mate Jay lead you through this world of sinful and ridiculous exploration.
The Story Behind Jacques
As many of you are aware, female authors, writing under a male persona has been a hot topic of discussion in our community for a long time. So, when Sam (SA McAuley) and I first came up with the pecker series we were mindful of this when we created Jacques N. Hoff (Go ahead say his name out loud hehehe) Jacques is not a male name we are trying to hide behind, but rather simply another of our characters. He is friends with all of those in the pecker world and he is the one telling the stories of each shifter and mate he knows. That being said, he dedicates each book to his long lost mate and he’ll be in the staring role in the final book of this 25 planned book series.
Tufted & Tatted is the 4th book and the first one I’ve taken on alone. Now before the rumors get started, NO we did not have a falling out. I adore her and is the other half of the ideas behind UCPeckers. She simply couldn’t find enough hours in the day to write everything she wanted, so for the time being, I will be taking over the series as the sole author. I’m sure you’ll be treated to her warped sense of humor in the future. For the time being, I hope you’ll take a chance and fly with me on this ridiculous journey. As Sam and I have always said, “These stories are so fucking stupid they’re brilliant” LOL
~Hugs~
Jo
BLURB
Freed from the Australian zoo where he was the subject of forced breeding experiments, Atticus makes his way to the tufted puffin grounds in California, only to find he may not be free after all. Atty is a loner, but he doesn’t want to fight the pull of a flighty surfer who gives his inked skin a pleasant, uncontrollable itch.
Scott has the sun on his face, the waves beneath him, and gratitude for every second of life he gets to embrace. Then Atty appears, and it’s like the universe has tuned his meditation bell to the perfect frequency.
The Tiki Pro surfing competition in Florida is calling to Scott, and Atty agrees to make sure Scott gets there safely. A cross-country road trip in the Hunny Wagon seems like a perfect way to live in the present and get tantric all at the same time.
But they aren’t making this trek alone.
ABOUT JACQUES N. HOFF
My father told me all about the birds and the bees. The liar. I went steady with a woodpecker until I was twenty-one. I now travel the world in search of the hottest pecker—in tandem with my best friend Simon Spoonwell and his blue jay partner Jay Azure. What you read here is all true. Well, at least in the world of UCPeckers it is. Wherever you see peckers, you may just find me there.
~*~
Jacques N. Hoff is the brainchild of SJD Peterson and SA McAuley. Two authors who shouldn’t be allowed to interact with each other (at least in public). It was either co-write hot pecker porn or plot world domination. It’s not clear which outcome will take the forefront on any given day.
Words from International Literacy Day and Updated Recovery Links.
Last week we were focused on Hurricane Irma as she left a swath of devastation across the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, the Keys and Florida.  Recovery is going to take months, if not years.  The pictures that come from the path of the hurricane are heartbreaking as are the stories of the people just getting back into to their neighborhoods to see what’s left of their homes.  I’ve included an updated list of organizations where you can donate if you so wish below:
Charity Navigator – Your Guide To Intelligent Giving | Home
Charity Navigator’s Approved Lists for:
Also, I’ve not forgotten our International Literacy Day! Because of the Hurricane Irma our results from International Literacy Day slid to this Sunday. we had some wonderful comments that I wanted to include below from our readers:
📚 From H.B.I think it’s important to get children active in reading early in life. Here in the states it’s easier to do but I feel promotion should be upped so communities know when a event or program is occurring. As for abroad I suppose the same can be done. Also if we had more volunteer programs not just missionary organizations go abroad and/or raising money for equipment and videos may even help some communities.
As for me I’ve always read. My sister use to force me to do it, I wasn’t allowed to watch tv when I wanted to. Instead I would be forced to sit down and read or write. It was my main source of entertainment. It fed my imagination, served as an escape and stress reliever.
humhumbum AT yahoo DOT com
From Jen:I think the biggest thing we can do to promote literacy is to read to kids. We read to our kids starting when they were infants and they are both avid readers now. Supporting library programs, school programs etc. where books are read aloud. We also have the opportunity to donate books to our school and to a program for underfunded schools via Scholastic Books.
I’ve read a lot ever since I was young. Books open up new worlds to me and also teach me about people and cultures I might never know otherwise.
From Purple Reader:
Thanks so much for your attention to literacy. It is a necessary part of education, which I believe so strongly in. Being able to read really does free a person. That was true for me, and I’ve seen it in others. A whole new world opens up. Then comes the critical thinking skills to make sense of it all, the decision making skills to do the right things with it, and all in the context of a well grounded value system.
Reading is the first step, it opens the door that would otherwise be closed. But most times people cannot do it alone. I try to do my part by volunteer tutoring GED students at the LGBTQ center here. The people’s growth is amazing and I’m so proud of how they become solid citizens of the world.TheWrote [at] aol [dot] com
and from
Ami:
Well, I live in Indonesia, where the level of people reading is pretty low. It’s a sad situation really. We don’t have a very established libraries — I always feel jealous when I see one abroad. I guess my way of promoting literacy or books usually by speaking about it on social media. Or donate books when I can — cannot exactly donate my MM romance collection, different culture and all. Because books definitely change my life. I actually discovered about my asexuality by reading books!
Announcements: Our winners of the International Literacy gift certificates are Ami and Jen.  Congratulations!.
Next week we start to move forward into things autumnal, things scary and always bookish.  Until then happy reading.  Here’s a peak at this week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.
Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5
Everything’s bigger in Texas, including weddings. And misunderstandings.
Colorado wedding planner Mason O’Reilly lands a major contract: a two-hundred-guest wedding at the Leanin’ N Ranch, where his friends Ford and Stoney are working to provide a safe space for GLBT events. The Wright/Preston ceremony is a destination wedding, and as the grooms are from Texas, everything is done over the phone and email. There’s no way that could lead to trouble, right?
Oops.
Oil tycoon Noah Wright isn’t happy about the impending disaster, but he admires Mason’s quick thinking and grace under pressure. And that’s not all he likes about the out-and-proud wedding planner. Even though Mason’s interested in Noah, his Mr. Right can’t possibly be a rancher from Dallas.
Can he?
Finding Mr. Wright, the second story in the Leaning N series by BA Tortuga, involves wedding planner Mason O’Reilly, a secondary character from Commitment Ranch.   I had wanted Mason to get his HEA and here he does.  Though it takes a while.
All the wonderful characters from the original story are here, Stoney, Ford, their kid and the various ranch hands including their chef (who needs his own story).  They form a wonderful foundation along with the Leaning N ranch for  Mason and Noah Wright to meet, clash and learn to love.  Of course, there are Texans, lots of mad Texans, transplanted to Colorado with a side trip south for good measure.  I have to admit, that was the part that threw me here for a little while.
Normally I love the Texas influence in BA Tortuga’s stories but when it went upscale (how I love me BA Tortuga’s redneck cowboy lovers) as it did with Wright’s family, especially with Noah’s mother who I sort of despised, part of the heart went out of this story and it went cold.  I understood that we needed to see where Noah was coming from and how much he had to work through.  Totally worked.  Still think his mama owes Mason a huge apology.
It took at trip back into the snow, up into the mountains of Colorado to find the warmth and heart of this series, for Noah to realize where his future was, as well as the fire and romance that pours out of this series.  The Leaning N Ranch and all the come out of there are special.  BA Tortuga creates these  little villages of people that form unique families, ones you never get tired of reading about.  All sort of quirky and wonderful.  There are lesbian partners, chefs with a past who make up incredible concoctions, tattooed hulks who show up and never leave only to become indispensable in the kitchen,  and of course Stoney and Ford and their kid.  Now there’s  Mason and Noah.
Can’t wait to see who’s next.  Yes, I love this series.  Yes, I recommend it.  Pick up the first one and head to this one next.  I’m already eagerly awaiting the next installment.
Cover Artist: Bree Archer.  I like the cover but wish it was just a little more detailed.
