In his night job, Don Allmon writes science fiction, fantasy, and romance. In his day job, he’s an IT drone. He holds a master of arts in English literature from the University of Kansas and wrote his thesis on the influence of royal hunting culture on medieval werewolf stories. A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Three Player Game (Bluewater Bay) by Jaime Samms

Vince’s life has improved immeasurably since he moved to Bluewater Bay two years ago. He’s gone from working for a man he hated, to helping found a company he believes in. And he and boyfriend, Pete, have built a delicate balance of power between them that keeps them both grounded and thriving.

Almost, anyway.

Pete’s job on the set of Wolf’s Landing is demanding. He needs lots of downtime off set, and that’s where Vince’s firm but gentle control isn’t always enough. And for Vince, Pete’s constant high-energy needs are turning out to be more than he can handle alone.

It’s no surprise to either of them, then, that sparks fly when Vince’s coworker Lee enters the picture. Outwardly, Lee is tough and confident, but when a bad back confines him to Pete and Vince’s spare room, the cracks start to show and his desire for connection begins to peek through.

Pete and Vince both like what they see under Lee’s prickly outside, but now the three men must learn that love isn’t about beating the game—it’s about balance, trust, and letting each other in.

From the minute I started reading this, I was confused.  I felt like there was a relationship history—whether friends, lovers, or enemies—missing from the setup because we should know who they are and how they fit together.  It didn’t help that each chapter was narrated by a different MC so three alternating POVs and two of them were already a couple. Should we have known this? I still don’t know.  But even with giving that alternating POV, I wasn’t getting enough information on the men to actually care about them.  I didn’t even know what they looked like, although there was one early mention of one of them having curls and another with Asian heritage. So I studied the cover photo and I studied the blurb and I went back twice to reread my review of the first Bluewater Bay story from this author, and there I was at chapter eight, and still clueless. 

Somewhere in the middle, I realized that maybe the chef and the other “money man” they were talking about was the same couple from the first book this author wrote for this series.  I was right and discovered it was How the Cookie Crumbles, but considering I read that over eighteen months ago—which was over 500 books ago for me—and the author is using two minor secondary characters in this book, I think she would have been much better off assuming we knew nothing about these men at all, and maybe later in the story, showing us the connection.  There wasn’t enough character-building to get me invested in this threesome.  Pete and Vince were not presented as a strong couple.  I got that they were together, but I didn’t feel emotion from Vince, and Pete came across as a sex kitten looking for someone to dominate him when he needs to be less hyperactive.  Lee was rude and obnoxious throughout most of the book, so I honestly didn’t care at all what happened to him. I certainly couldn’t relate to him at all and simply wanted to move past him, whether it was his own POV chapter or one of the others. 

Toward the end, I started to feel the connection between the threesome, and overall, by the conclusion of the story I was pleased with all of them, but I can’t honestly recommend this as a good example of a ménage book.  To me, there needs to be a deep connection between all three men, and that didn’t come across as the case here.  There were connections—like the old connect-the-dots games I played as a kid—but not enough to recommend this.

The cover by LC Chase was very informative in that it features three handsome men.  As I said before, I actually referred to the cover a few times to get an idea of what the characters looked like.  The threesome pictured—interestingly and maybe subconsciously?—are pictured as three separate characters facing in different directions and not all embracing one another.  Freudian? Or a portent of the contents of the book?

One of the reasons I loved writing Midlife Crisis is because the story is about three things I love very much: 1. self-acceptance; 2. family and friendship bonds; and 3. Texas.

In Midlife Crisis, Cam McGhee—one of the main characters—is on a fifty-year journey of self-acceptance. Because of the time in which he was born and raised, because of his familial and community background, because of so many things that go into influencing a person’s sense of self, he has spend the first half of his life wanting to accept who he is and live fully as himself, but resigning himself to never being able to. When circumstances change, and the opportunity to change his way of living is presented to him, though, he realizes the shift is easier said than done…even for a man in his fifties.

Family and friends play a big role in the book, too. Cam’s family is a source of angst and support at the same time. Dave Montoya, the other main character, has a tight-knit group of friends that looks out for him, and a sister who always has his back. For this particular story, I didn’t want to write any characters who were directly trying to undermine Cam and Dave’s journey, especially when Cam’s biggest enemy is himself—his own fears.

Oh, Texas. The third thing I love very much, though I have a complicated relationship with the state where I was born and raised (I now live in New England). Midlife Crisis takes place in Texas because of the ease of which a person can travel between rural farm communities and big cities, but still maintain that fundamental identity of Texan (it’s a thing, if any of y’all are from Texas or know Texans or watch Texans on TV). It’s an anchor point for Cam as he moves through an emotional tumultuous time in his life, and the constant of “Texas” helps him explore a new life of self-acceptance with more security.

In the end, this book is about the things I love, but at its core it’s about love, itself. Love through the self, love through connections, and love of one’s home are all secondary to the ability to love, in the first place.

Cam McGhee grew up like any other small-town Texas farm boy: he played football, went to church every Sunday, and married his high school sweetheart. But thirty-five years after he said “I do,” Cam finds himself nursing a beer in a gay bar, thinking about what might have been.

Gritty, wildly imaginative, and full of action, Glamour Thieves by Don Allmon has much to recommend it. JT, the orc with a past is one of them.  A retired thief with a background of grief, pain, loss and maybe  even betrayal, JT hasn’t entirely let who and what he was go but he’s trying hard.  He loves the peace his new hard won life has won him and the young orc he’s mentoring reminds him a lot of himself when he was young.  Between his clients, building a business and keeping her busy and out of trouble, JT’s life is full.  Allmon makes JT accessible emotionally.  You connect with this character in his gruff ways all the while wanting to know more about the implants that connect him to the cars and trucks that are so much a part of him as breathing.

Then there’s Austin, an enigma that threatens JT’s world that he’s built, periling both of them for a job that’s shady to begin with.  Nothing that Austin says, does or is can be trusted.  Even as a reader,  I honestly found it hard to trust the feelings that Austin said/implied he had for JT.  Real? Lust? Gritty doesn’t even begin to explore the complicated dynamics that exist between these two and their past history together.

Even the plot and the revelations leave so many questions at the end.  Questions I’m not sure we’ll ever get answers too unless they will be coming in the next stories in the series.  I hope so.  This is one hell of a universe that Don Allmon is spinning here and one I can’t wait to dive back into.  Only don’t do it for the romance.   For romance lovers, you’re going to be disappointed here.  There is a relationship yes, but how it ends and on what grounds?  That’s still to be established.

Nothing comes easy in this world.  It’s hard scrabble all the way.  I want to see  where this series goes from here.  You will to.  Don’t read it for the romance, read it for the characters, the adventure and the world building!

Hello! I’m Erin, and welcome to the blog tour for my m/m college romance, Controlled Burn! I can’t wait for you to meet Joel and Paulie, and hope you enjoy their romance as much as I enjoyed writing it.

 

Meet the Cast of Controlled Burn

When I’m writing, I seldom have an actor or model in mind as I create characters. But as I was revising and editing Controlled Burn, I often came across actors, models, or musicians who reminded me of the characters. Below I’ve included some models and actors to help introduce you to the cast of Controlled Burn.

Joel: He’s the main character of Controlled Burn—the entire story is from his point of view. Joel has not had an easy life, and he’s actively dealing with some grief. Sometimes he says the wrong thing, and he is often selfish or self-centered. He’s certainly flawed. But at his core, he’s sensitive and strong-willed and loving. My current inspiration for Joel is the actor Joe Alwyn.

Paulie: He is Joel’s love interest. Paulie also hasn’t had an easy life, but he handles it quite differently than Joel. While Joel can be closed-off, Paulie is open, swishy, fun, flirty, and sweet. He makes friends everywhere he goes, and loves openly and honestly. Paulie was a delight for me to write, and the model Brandon Logie is my current inspiration for him.

Travis: Travis is Joel’s best friend and housemate. They share a crappy two bedroom, one bathroom rental house right off campus. Travis is sarcastic, honest, sometimes outrageous, and a little kinky. He plays lots of instruments, poorly, and has a wide range of bizarre interests. He is also emotionally intelligent, which sometimes causes problems for Joel, who hides his emotions. My inspiration for Travis is the lovely John Boyega.

Daria: Daria is Paulie’s younger sister. Like Paulie, she is estranged from their very large family. She’s a nursing student and has vast reserves of empathy. She also struggles with anxiety and depression. The bond between her and Paulie is very special. My inspiration for Daria is actress Maika Monroe.

Alex: Alex was a really fun character to write, and I hope I get to revisit his story eventually. He is a fun, sexy, tattooed guy with a super soft center. He’s really understanding during moments when some people wouldn’t be. My inspiration for him is model Diego Barrueco.

Angie: Angie is Paulie’s best friend. She’s an accounting major, like him, and is wild and fun. She has a sly sense of humor and an open heart. My current inspiration for Angie is Ariel Winter.

Aunt Ruth: Ruth is Paulie and Daria’s aunt. She takes first Paulie and then Daria in when they are teenagers and are no longer welcome at their parents’ home. She’s stubborn and mischievous, as well as being a loving mother figure to Paulie and Daria. My inspiration for Aunt Ruth is Diane Keaton. Also, I just really love this picture of her.

About Controlled Burn

 

At eighteen, Joel Smith’s life fell to pieces. His boyfriend died in a car crash while reading a sext from him, the local newspaper outed them both in the aftermath, and his parents got a divorce. Joel did everything possible to outrun his past: he moved to Oklahoma for college, legally changed his name, and started over.

About Jaime Samms

Jaime has been writing for various publishers since the fall of 2008, although she’s been writing for herself far longer. Her Stories about men falling in love are the stories that she loves to read, so it seemed to make sense if she was going to write, they would also be the stories she wrote.

These days, you can find plenty of free reading on her website. She also writes for Various Publishers.

Spare time, when it can be found rolled into a ball at the back of the dryer or cavorting with the dust bunnies in the corners, is spent crocheting, drawing, gardening (weather permitting, of course, since she is Canadian!), or watching movies. She has a day job, as well, which she loves, and two kids, but thankfully, also a wonderful husband who shoulders more than his fair share of household and child-care responsibilities.

She graduated some time ago from college with a fine arts diploma, and a major in textile arts, which basically qualifies her to draw pictures and create things with string and fabric. One always needs an official slip of paper to fall back on after all . . .
