A MelanieM Release Day Review : Ghost (Sanctuary #9) by RJ Scott

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

ghost-sanctuary-9-by-rj-scottCan you ever hold on to a ghost?

Elliot is tracking an elusive killer, codenamed Ghost, with ties to organized crime. Every time the Sanctuary team gets close, Ghost slips their grasp.

Cole has nowhere left to turn. With his father dying and his sister in danger, he turns for help to the very people trying to track him down. Sanctuary’s assistance is what he needs to punch another hole in Varga’s organization.

When Elliot and Cole meet, it isn’t just passion that consumes them. When lust becomes something more, Elliot realizes that sometimes you can’t hold on to a ghost, and that sacrifice is often the only way to make things right.

Ghost (Sanctuary story #9) is a terrific installment in the espionage thrillers from RJ Scott.  In Ghost, the author delivers the answers to major series plot points that have been haunting readers from previous stories while bringing us a suspenseful, white-knuckle ride that also happens to include a romance to die for.  I love it when that happens.

Cole has been an enigma since our first meeting with him but now he’s revealed and its heartbreaking.  Both tough guy and victim, Cole is a character you can connect with and you immediately understand why Elliot lets him get so close despite their history and Elliot’s suspicions.  I have always enjoyed the past histories that RJ Scott has created for her characters in this series and Cole is no exception.  The revelations about Cole and his family are huge and I think there’s more to come in the next story.  There are narrative bombshells dropping everywhere in Ghost.  I can almost imagine the glee that  the author felt as she wrote it.

There are huge questions answered about series characters like Simon for instance from his story, Accidental Hero. That’s just a beginning.  Ghost is one giddy festival of plot threads opening, and closing and new ones popping open in their place. We also get our Sanctuary characters from other stories showing up as well, always a plus.  Another RJ Scott staple?  The new couple on the horizon, ready for the next story.

Yes, this massive crime umbrella plot thread is still alive and growing and driving this series like a champ.  I had no idea of the surprises the author had in store for us in Ghost and that Cole was the key to unlocking a whole new chapter of deviousness of evil and villainy. Love when that happens too.  Bring on Book 10!  This series is alive and kicking and I can’t wait for more.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Countermind by Adrian Randall

Rating: 4 stars out of 5* with notations

countermind-by-adrian-randallIn a postprivacy future, secrets are illegal and all communication is supervised. Telepaths are registered and recruited by a government with no qualms about invading the minds of its citizens. Fugitive psychics are hunted by the Bureau of Counterpsychic Affairs, or Countermind.

Alan Izaki is one such fugitive, as well as a hacker, grifter, and thief.
Countermind agent Jack Smith is hunting him through the twisted underbelly of Hong Kong.

But Alan possesses a secret so dangerous and profound it will not only shake Smith’s loyalties, but the foundations of their society.

And Alan isn’t the only one on the run. Rogue psychic Arissa binti Noor escapes Countermind, in search of brilliant game designer Feng Huang. She hopes that together, they can destroy the government’s intrusive Senex monitoring system.

Their goals seem at odds, and their lives are destined to collide. When they do, three very different people must question their alliances and their future, because everything is about to change.

If there was ever a book I could divide up and give different ratings to, it would be Countermind.  Its taken me a while to decide how exactly to approach this review because I have such mixed emotions over this story.  If I had my druthers, the ratings would look something like this:

Rating: 2.5 stars for 50 percent of the book
Rating: 5 stars for the remaining 50 percent of the book

And that changes as I remember different parts, both good and bad.  Sometimes its 60/40 or 40/60.  Or even 30/70.  Really, this book confounds me.

Most of the lower ratings would come at the beginning, and yes, the middle as well.  The fragmented narrative, even from present day to future, from character to character (s) in the plot timeline was confusing at best, incoherent at its worst.  It was like getting snatches of plot and people only to be thrown into another situation entirely.  Jarring doesn’t begin to describe how a reader feels. Its so densely packed with information and plot threads that its overwhelming and the leaping here and there only serves to make a reader lose track of what has just been laid out in the short previous section.  Really, I started taking notes.

But I plugged along as this was an ARC I’d been given (and I’ve never had a DNF yet) and a funny thing happened.  Randall abandoned his broken storytelling, the narrative became linear and Countermind evolved into the story it could have been all along.  It turns into an masterful tale of suspense, an alternative universe where psychics are sought because they are regarded as both dangerous to the States as well as a highly regarded commodity or tool for the government to use depending upon their personality.  Randall also brings all those previously unconnected or loosely connected puzzle pieces together and locks them into the drama so now we are firmly invested in these characters futures (if they have any) and the next precarious, breath-taking turn of the page.

Why oh why didn’t this happen sooner?

I can understand if the author didn’t want us to connect the dots early on but surely there was another way of doing it other than frustrating the heck out of a reader and making the book as disjointed as this was in the beginning.

Even at the end, the author just can’t leave things alone.  Unless, Randall is planning on this being a series which is possible.  There is that whole thing about Korea and….no, I won’t go there.  But I thought that was more than a tad absurd too.  Damn, forgot about Korea.  Should have cut that out altogether, unless of course, there’s a sequel coming.  Wouldn’t surprise me at all.   See what I mean about this story? Shakes head.

What to tell you.  Well the great bits about this story are just that…really great.  Mind-bending, suspenseful, hold your breath, just loved it great!  And the stuff I found absurd, dense, and fragmented?  Bad enough to make you not want to plow further into the story.  But I found it worth it.  It all depends upon if you like this genre enough to want to read Countermind.  If you do, tell me what you think.  I’m truly interested.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is terrific.  Works great for the character and storyline.

A Stella Release Day Review: Until You (At First Sight #3) by T.J. Klune

RATING 5 out of 5 stars

until-you-by-tj-kluneSequel to The Queen & the Homo Jock King

Together with their families and friends

Paul Auster

and

Vincent Taylor

request the honor of your company at the celebration of their marriage.

Until You by TJ Klune is the HEA all the fans of Vince and Paul deserved. Maybe we fans deserved it more than the MCs for all the shit we had to read in the previous books (Just joking!).

I can always count on TJ and his writing, I can’t explain how much I laughed reading this new release, how many times I rolled my eyes at Paul and Sandy, how much I wanted to be part of that crazy family of blood related and not people.

This new installment was exactly what I was expecting, crazy and funny and stupid, just perfect and always over the top. It’s what I want from the At First Sight series.  I was so happy to have the chance to revisit these favorite persons of mine, not just Paul and Vince, but all the other characters too, I saw a little more of the homo jock king heart and I fell in love again with Corey. I so hope TJ will give me more.

I enjoyed and deeply loved each chapter, each full of not just laughs, but full of what truly conquered me, the positiveness and the emotions, had the book not been so funny, I surely would have cried as a baby, because the love was not only in the air, the love was everywhere and the characters’ hearts were full of it. It warmed my soul and left me with a smile on my face.

I don’t want to spoil the story telling little details, but I want to highly recommend the whole series and if you are missing just Until You, run to buy it right now and read it soon. It’s a winner.

The cover art by Reese Dante is awesome, I like this artist style a lot and this is no exception, especially for the cake topping, too cute.

A Free Dreamer Release Day Review: We Met in Dreams by Rowan McAllister

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

a-free-dreamer-release-day-review-we-met-in-dreams-by-rowan-mcallisterIn Victorian London, during a prolonged and pernicious fog, fantasy and reality are about to collide—at least in one man’s troubled mind.

A childhood fever left Arthur Middleton, Viscount Campden, seeing and hearing things no one else does, afraid of the world outside, and unable to function as a true peer of the realm. To protect him from himself—and to protect others from him—he spends his days heavily medicated and locked in his rooms, and his nights in darkness and solitude, tormented by visions, until a stranger appears.

This apparition is different. Fox says he’s a thief and not an entirely good sort of man, yet he returns night after night to ease Arthur’s loneliness without asking for anything in return. Fox might be the key that sets Arthur free, or he might deliver the final blow to Arthur’s tenuous grasp on sanity. Either way, real or imaginary, Arthur needs him too much to care.

Fox is only one of the many secrets and specters haunting Campden House, and Arthur will have to face them all in order to live the life of his dreams.

I’m usually not big on historical romance novels, but the blurb was sufficiently unusual and slightly creepy to make me curious. I definitely didn’t regret my choice.

First of all, you have to suspend your disbelief for this story. Fox breaks into Arthur’s house, late one foggy winter night. When Arthur catches him, Fox doesn’t knock him out or harm Arthur in any other way. Instead, he stays for a chat.

Once I got past that slightly strange beginning, I started getting caught up in the story. There are so many unanswered questions and so many secrets lurking here. Is Arthur truly hallucinating? Are the apparitions real ghosts? Or is his kindly uncle plotting against him and there’s a much more mundane reason behind those creepy noises Arthur hears every night? There’s an answer to all those questions in the end, rest assured.

The setting was subtly creepy. Not outright horror-story-like, but just enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end every now and then. I like this kind of subtly creepiness and the author did a brilliant job creating an eerie atmosphere.

While the author managed to convey the creepiness of the setting extremely well, it lacked a “British” feel all over. I think it might have been better if she’d chosen to set this in the USA instead of London. Part of it is probably due to the fact that most of the story takes place in Arthur’s rooms and we hardly ever see the outside world. But when I first read “color” instead of “colour”, I found it really jarring and kept looking for the American spelling. I know it’s pronounced the same, but if a story is set in London and has English MCs, then I expect the British spelling. It should only be a minor niggle, but it started to quite bother me after a while.

The MCs were nice. A little too nice, really. I don’t see why Fox would return to the seemingly insane Arthur and risk a prison sentence in doing so. And Arthur was a little too concerned with everybody else’s well-being.

After all the suspense throughout the entire book, the ending was a little anti-climactic. The revelation felt a little mundane, to be honest.

Long story short, “We Met in Dreams” was good. It might not have been brilliant but overall, I quite enjoyed it.  If you like ghost stories and the subtle creepiness they bring, then you’ll like this book.

The cover by Anna Silkorska is perfect for this story. I love the haunted manor.

✒︎Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Lynn Charles Interview✒︎

Today Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is very lucky to be interviewing Lynn Charles author of Beneath the StarsHi Lynn, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

I’m happy to be here! I’m an author, wife and mother living in Central Ohio. I’ve been writing—from lavish journal entries to fictional stories—most of my life. My novels, Chef’s Table and Black Dust were published with Interlude Press in 2014 and 2016. Beneath the Stars is about man at a major turning point in his career who gets called home to help take care of his elderly father. While there he meets someone, and together, they learn how to define happiness, home and family.

  • What genres do you enjoy writing in?

Contemporary romance has always been where my mind takes me when I’m writing. Interestingly enough, while I enjoy reading the same genre, my favorite reads are typically memoirs. But, I suppose there is an interconnectedness in that I like the real and relatable bits of contemporary romance the most of all. Sure, the fantastical is great—be in incredible careers or perfect bodies, the promise of happy endings and deep seeded contentment—but the bits where I can recognize the humanity in the midst of the fantastical appeals to me.

  • What was the hardest part about writing this book?

Getting the layers of my main character, Sid, out there without pages of info dump. He has a rich background and a complicated present. I over did it, then under did it and threw my hands up in the air a few times with it all. But, I pressed on and Sid will hopefully be a beloved character—he is to me anyway.

  • What did you enjoy most about writing your book?

The one-on-one relationships, even beyond the romantic relationship of Sid and Eddie. I loved moments with Sid and his father. Sid and Eddie’s son, Adrian. Adrian and his dad, Eddie, were painful and rewarding as an author. Sid and his sister have a complicated relationship, and exploring that was a joy.

  • What cultural value do you see in writing?

The same I see in all of the arts: it broadens not only the viewpoint of the author (or it should), but also the reader. It takes you to worlds you would have never explored on your own, or deepens your understanding of the worlds you have explored. The saying, “Write what you know,” is such a disservice for the author, when there is so much out there we don’t know, and even more we can learn from the places in life that we’re comfortable.

  • What is your favorite positive saying?

My favorite saying in general is, “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should,” but I’m not sure that’s anything more than a neutral/kind way of considering decisions. I’d probably choose the Dalai Lama quote I use for the signature on my personal email account: Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible. It’s not one I always remember, but I certainly try.

BENEATH THE STARS ~ SUMMARY

Sid Marneaux puts his fashion career on the line when he returns home to care for his ailing father. When he meets the new fire chief Eddie Garner, their romance sparks hot, but Eddie harbors burdens of his own. Through the wisdom of a child and the connection of mothers-now-gone, the men redefine family, career, and most importantly, love.

* * *

Excerpt from Beneath the Stars

Happiness doesn’t always come easily; sometimes you have to work for it.

* * *

“How is he doing?”

Sid began with a prepared answer, the one he used for old neighbors and family acquaintances. “He’s doing okay. Day to day, you know,” but when he stopped fidgeting with his food and looked into Eddie’s eyes, his breath caught in his throat. Eddie wasn’t making small talk, wasn’t being generically kind. He was tuned in, with an understanding and patience at peeling away the complicated layers of caring for an elderly parent that went beyond what Sid had felt from anyone—even his closest friends.

And so, with Eddie’s unrushed attention, Sid began to unpack the emotions and frustrations he hadn’t yet allowed himself to express. He talked about Anna’s overbearing control and her lack of understanding as to why that would make Lou lash out and became belligerent. He talked about Anna’s calendars and charts and the daily schedule she kept Lou on. About her refusal to let their dad do much of anything. “It’s like she’s already put him in the ground,” he finally said, feeling almost winded after exposing so much of himself, of his family.

“It’s hard on the caretakers,” Eddie said. “It completely takes over your life.”

“It’s hard on the patient too. Dad lived, you know? Just last year, he rode his bike five miles to the park and back almost every day. This is the man who threw on a backpack with a bunch of college buddies and hiked the fucking Hippie Trail. He didn’t stop until he found what he was looking for. He doesn’t stop. And now he has no choice.”

“What was he looking for?”

Sid grinned with memories of his mom and dad and their great love. “He didn’t know until he saw her.”

Eddie met his smile, and a blush crept up his neck. “Sometimes we don’t know what we’re looking for until it’s sitting across the table from us.”

“No,” Sid said, unable to pull his gaze away from Eddie. “We don’t.”

BENEATH THE STARS will be published by Interlude Press on February 16, 2017.

Twenty Questions with Detective Peter Tao, from Hacked Up

(from Ethan Stone: I’ve done twenty questions with me  but today I’m going to do it with Detective Peter Tao, the main character of Hacked Up.)

  • Do you like blue cheese?

Peter Tao:It’s not my favorite thing in the world but a salad with a few blue cheese crumbles isn’t the all that bad.

  • Have you ever smoked cigarettes?

Peter Tao I tried when I was fifteen and my dad caught me. He was furious. That alone was enough to stop me from ever trying it again.

  • Do you own a gun?

Peter Tao  I’m a cop. What do you think?

  • What flavor Kool-Aid?

Peter Tao  Is there a vodka flavor?

  • Do you get nervous before a Dr. appt?

Peter Tao That would mean I actually go to the doctor. I prefer to stay away from anyone wearing a white coat.

  • What do you think of hot dogs?

Peter Tao Full of some of the grossest stuff out there. I love em.

  • Favorite Movie?

Peter Tao Probably not the best choice but I love the Dirty Harry movies. I don’t envision myself as Dirty Harry and I’m much more by the book than he is but, damn, sometimes I wish I could do what he does and get away with it.

  • What do you prefer to drink in the morning?

Peter Tao  Coffee. The stronger the better.

  • Can you do a push up?

Peter Tao   Absolutely. Try to do ‘em every day to keep myself in shape.

  • What’s your favorite piece of jewelry?

Peter Tao   I have a ring from my maternal grandmother that is very sentimental to me. It was her wedding ring. If I were straight I’d give it to my wife. Marriage isn’t in my future, even if it is legal. I have no plans to come out. It would destroy my parents.

  • Do you have a favorite hobby?

Peter Tao   Does work count as a hobby?

  • Do you have ADD?

Peter Tao Nope. I’m skilled at multi-tasking and staying focused.

  • Do you wear glasses?

Peter Tao  20-20 vision, baby.

  • Who was your childhood idol?

Peter Tao  George Michael

  • Name three drinks you regularly drink?

Peter Tao  Coffee, Beer, Vodka.

  • Current worries?

Peter Tao   Figuring out how to have a love life and not have my parents find out.

  • Current hate?

Peter Tao  Beliefs that exist simply because someone a long time ago said it was so.

  • Favorite place to be?

Peter Tao   The police station.

  • How do you bring in the new year?

Peter Tao    Last year was with my best friend, Jamey. This year…depends what’s going on with Bryce.

  • Where would you like to go?

Peter Tao:    Bryce’s bed. It hasn’t happened yet. Hopefully soon.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Preface:

I love short stories. Sometimes a brief “snapshot” taken from a couple’s larger story is all that’s wanted. The narrative of “how they met” is the focus of six of the shorts in this set—quirky tales ranging from meeting at a charity fundraiser, to college kids pranking each other, to a mishap at a XXX adult video arcade.

Also included is a story featuring a well-established couple’s wedding dilemma, a friends-to-lovers tale, a coming-out-of-the-closet drama, and a continuation short that follows one of those how-we-mets. Rounding out this collection is an account revisiting the main characters from my full-length novel, ’Til Death Do Us Part.

All of these stories are contemporary, although one has a bit of paranormal flavor to it. Heat ratings range from “fairly sweet” to “rather steamy.” Excepting the final story, all were originally written in 2008 and early 2009. One (“Photo Shoot”) started out as a prompt word ficlet that I later fleshed out to a more complete story. Each has received a thorough overhaul, some more extensive than others. I hope you’ll enjoy reading them as much as I did writing them.

Ted made his way to the edge of the dance floor and looked around. He saw a man staring at him— tall and muscular, just like Ted preferred. The stranger smiled, and Ted grinned back. Just as he started to walk around the room to join the man, a voice, low and sensual, came from behind.

“I was hoping you’d be here tonight, Raven.” That voice always sent a jolt straight to his cock.

“Caesar.” Ted turned and smiled. At six-three, the handsome man stood several inches taller than Ted, and had short, light brown hair and deep blue eyes. “Always good to see you, babe.”

“Darling, you are breathtaking as always.” Caesar looked Ted up and down as a saucy grin spread across his face. “Shall we dance?”

“Of course.” Ted put out his hand.

Caesar led him to the middle of the floor, then pulled him close so their bodies rubbed as they danced.

Ted closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around Caesar’s neck. The man gave Ted’s ass cheeks a squeeze, and Ted ground his pelvis against him so Caesar could feel his growing hard-on.

Caesar’s chuckle vibrated across his broad chest and through Ted. “Is that for me?”

Ted nibbled at Caesar’s neck. “It’s all yours, babe.”

New Love, New Beginnings. This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

New Love, New Beginnings. Hey, Its March!

March sails in this week full of itself!  March is a month just popping with meaning and celebrations of all kinds.  The Vernal Equinox begins March 20th (although it has felt like Spring here for days).  There’s the Ides of March (poor Caesar), St. Patricks Day (get out your green), World Wildlife Day is on the 3rd, International Forest Day is on the 21st and more religious days than I will go into here. Here in the States, even Daylight Savings Time returns (ugh).

For me, however, it signals the return of spring. New growth of all types from buds and tiny leaves appearing from shrub to perennial flowers to birds busy with their nesting building in anticipation of young to follow.  The eagles at the National Arboretum have already laid their first egg of the season. Yes, love is in the air whether it be new love or that of established lovers like the eagle pair I just mentioned.  Of course, that’s my link to my topic this week and perhaps this month.

Love stories! What’s your preference?  Do you even have one? New Love, New Beginnings. Lovers Reunited, Second Chance at Love?  I have to admit I have a huge fondness for the second trope.  I love it when ex-lovers get a chance to have their HEA, to get that love that de-railed back on track after whatever broke them up and time gone by (go ahead count up the cliches, lol).  But then again, ah, those stories of men finding their soul mates and never letting go, no matter the obstacles.  They grab me too.  Ok, I love them both.  How about you?  Do you all have a preference?  Yes? No?  I’m dying to find out. Giveaway time!

Give me your favorites and why.
