Barb, A Zany Old Lady Review of Take Heart by Willa Okati

Rating; 2.5 stars out of 5

takeheart_exlarge_PNG-210x336Dr Brendan West arrives at St. Hawk’s Medical Center for two reasons: first, because he’s onboard as a temp in the ER to cover for another doctor on leave, and second, because he’s heard great things about this area— stories that made him feel that there’s a charm to the town that brings good things to good people. He starts to feel the peace and serenity of the area and enjoy the charm of the town but is afraid to jump in wholeheartedly because he knows his time here is only temporary.

He meets Evan, a heart transplant patient who’s there for an annual checkup and is immediately attracted, then disappointed that Evan is taken when his partner, Griff, walks in. Griff is sending signals that Brendan is afraid he might be misinterpreting. He feels Griff checking him out but that couldn’t be—because he and Evan are a couple, aren’t they? It turns out that Griff and Evan have been known to take on a third over the years and they would like Brendan to join them for a night, or more, of ménage. He finally takes them up on their offer, and it’s more than he could have hoped for. They want him to stay permanently, but he’s sets his boundaries knowing he’s going to be leaving. The story is mostly about that push-pull struggle to decide what to do, i.e. self-inflicted angst as Brendan hovers between wanting to commit to them and wanting to stay detached.

It’s hard to put into words why this story didn’t grab me, but the easiest way to describe it is that it was as if I went to see a movie where the characters spoke quietly in short, staccato sentences, grunts, and mumbles, and the videographer set the scene too dark to be able to make out which characters were speaking, and then to top it all off, it was hard to see what they were actually doing at the time. I had to reread passages and entire pages multiple times to verify who was speaking. I also had trouble visualizing exactly what position each character was in during the sex scenes, but that may have been complicated by the fact that I wasn’t sure who was speaking so it was just hard to imagine. And why have a sex scene if the reader can’t visualize it?

There were many secondary characters in the story so I kept expecting that some action would take place with them, but they either weren’t important to the story or the interaction didn’t take place on page. One example is Brendan’s boss, Dr. Gabriel. We see him outside of office hours but the “important meeting” he’s supposed to have with Brendan is glossed over in that scene. Most men in the story were apparently gay as well, so perhaps the author was introducing characters who will be featured in future installments of this St. Hawk’s Medical Center series.

And my last issue is that I never really understood why Evan and Griff felt that Brendan was so different that they wanted to make the offer to join them permanent. They certainly had no reason to do so from the beginning since they really didn’t even know him at first, and they had previously played with other men in a threesome, so why he was special just didn’t seem to make sense. Perhaps if the author had filled in more on their background or indicated in some way that they had been searching for a permanent third for a long time, it would have made a bit more sense when they got together with him.

The more I write this review, the more I realize that it feels like I’m trying to remember details of a fuzzy dream, and they aren’t coming to me. I’m going to assume that’s because of my above description of how difficult it was to follow the storyline. So I’ll just end the review by saying that if you love ménage, you might like this, but it’s not something that I would recommend to others looking for a romance novel with a strong storyline.

Cover Art by Posh Gosh depicts a handsome, bare-chested man with a scenic landscape background. Although the cover is attractive, it does not depict details of the story.

A Stella Review: Wrong Number, Right Guy (Celebrity #1) by Mia Watts

Rating 2 stars out of 5

Wrong Number, Right Guy coverA wrong number with a sexy voice on the other end… What are the chances a regular guy has just hooked the hottest actor on the silver screen?

Ryan Pierce is in town shooting the latest romantic action movie and attending all the right publicity parties. He wasn’t expecting to pick up the phone to an easy laugh and real conversation. So, when he discovers that his caller has misdialed, it surprises him even more that he doesn’t want the man to hang up.

Dar Phillips is the last man to get star-struck, yet his best friend drags him out to be an extra on a movie set. It’s a chance to meet the guy on the set who he accidently called, but he has to admit the lead actor is hot stuff. Could the loping mega-star be his phone-a-friend? And, when they kiss, is Dar ready for the paparazzi and accusations of betrayal by the man who now stars in Dar’s every dream?

Who did Dar fall for?  The elusive Ryan Pierce, who can’t be seen with him, or the quiet, gentle man who’s just a phone call away?

This book is one of my few two stars. This review will be really short because I admit I’m a little uncomfortable writing it. I’m sorry to say I don’t even know where to start, there isn’t a thing I liked.

Reading the blurb I thought the story looked interesting, too bad it wasn’t delivered in the writing. Instead, I found the book boring for most of the story and the other times it was just surreal. Some dialogues between the main characters seemed childish. And everything in the relationship went so fast, they talked on the phone, they fell in love, then they meet, Ryan comes out of the closet, they split up, they’re back together. Wow.

I enjoy a lot insta-love/lust stories but this one was so unlikely, I couldn’t even understand why they were attracted or in love with each other. It makes no sense at all.

As I already said a thousand times I love my books to be sweet, in this case it was too much. I was waiting for something to change all the way to the end, but it continued to be disappointing and flat.

Cover Artist by Posh Gosh. I like everything about this cover, even the font. Really well done. Finally something in this book fits the blurb.

A Sammy Review: The Way Things Are by A. J. Thomas

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

The Way Things Are coverBeing a single father is difficult, especially when your son’s way of expressing himself it by creating beautiful and elaborate graffiti in places that he shouldn’t. Patrick just wants a fresh start for Jay, and he hopes moving back to Washington will give Jay just that, but with graffiti being Jay’s way of expressing himself, it’s inevitable that he’ll reoffend. Patrick just never expected his new PO to be the stunning and intriguing Ken Atkins.

Through new jobs and awkward shifts, to a one-night stand that is a mistake they’re both willing to repeat, and a mysterious series of incidents at the shipping yard, Patrick and Ken have their work cut out for them if they’re going to make this relationship work in the long haul.

“You make me feel excited and safe at the same time. When I’m up there and I look down, I feel like I’m in a constant state of freefall. It’s a rush, and it’s engaging and it’s a little terrifying, but it’s also safe because I know it’s secure. Thinking about you is like that. It’s like falling all the time, but never having to worry about hitting the ground.”

In general, I thoroughly enjoyed The Way Things Are. I absolutely adored the characters and their personalities. It was truly great to see the heart and love Patrick put into raising his son, and despite some incidents in the past, the way he still made sure his son never heard ill about his ex-wife. It was something that, as a social worker who is working with families, I wish I saw more of.

There were some minor issues here and there. At one point there was a small plot inconsistency when Patrick was talking about his whereabouts the night before and in another part there was a very quick POV switch in the middle of page and then back again that confused me. Both of these things were near the end of the book, so it was a bit of a bummer to get so far and then find a couple mistakes like that.

This is also one of those books that you really should read in just a couple sittings. I had to read it in more than that, and by the time I got to read the end, a lot of my excitement was gone. It didn’t have an oomph for me like some parts in the beginning did. I will also say that they didn’t get together the way I expected them to. I’m not sure the way they first hooked up is the way I would’ve taken it, and I had to set that aside so that I could let myself continue to enjoy the book. I just felt like they deserved more than a random club hookup.

BUT, and there is a but, this book had some excellent writing for most of it and seriously memorable characters. I adored Jay and Corbin, and I’d love to see either of them get their own stories. The author did a great job of leaving it so that this could happen and setting it up, so I’m really hoping that we get to see more of them.

The cover art by Bree Archer is nice and sexy, much like the book. My only qualm is they both look pretty muscular, when I only really pictured Patrick as being that built – and the hair of who I presume to be Patrick doesn’t look red. Otherwise, it’s an enticing cover.

A MelanieM Review: The Truth as He Knows It (Perspectives #1) by A.M. Arthur

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Lies are the chains that keep you weighed down at rock bottom.

The Truth As He Knows It coverNoel Carlson is now living as a police officer in the town of Stratton, Pennsylvania.  The scars he carries, on body and in mind, are not the only reminders of the gay bashing in college.  It also left his first love and best friend Tristan institutionalized with brain damage. And Noel his only visitor.  Weekly visits to Tristan and some of the comments Noel has overheard at work have kept him firmly in the closet, even to his partner.  Then an official call to an apartment building on a nuisance violation changes all that.

The loud noises from an out of control female bachelor party brings Off. Noel Carlson and his partner face to face with a tied up, dazed male stripper. Since the stripper had violated no laws, Noel lets him go.  Later Noel finds that he can’t forget the gorgeous man in the thong with the butterfly tattoo.

Shane Joseph has had a terrible life and it has left him with overwhelming debts to repay, especially to the brother who sacrificed nearly everything for him. His two jobs, in a deli and as a stripper, leave him no time for a social life.  But when his last job brings a gorgeous cop to his rescue, Shane thinks his might be missing out on something.  Another encounter at the deli reinforces that impression, especially when it seems that Noel wants more than sex and a quick hookup.  Soon a shaky bond is formed and Shane and Noel start to hope that they might even have a future together.

But Shane has huge secrets that he is hiding from everyone, including his brother.  And past history has taught him that lying brings less pain than telling the truth.  But now those lies are piling up and threatening to drown Shane.  Shane wants to come clean to those he loves, including Noel.  But when the revelations are done, will Shane still have anyone to come home to?

Whew!  What an emotionally wrenching read.  A. M. Arthur certainly knows how to build a story complete with strong, vulnerable characters you grow to care about.  A carryover from Arthur’s Cost of Repairs (book and series), the reverberations of the events and gay bashing continue to spread through the storyline here.  The Truth As He Knows It is the first in Arthur’s new Perspectives series that will feature characters from the Cost of Repairs books and new characters such as Shane.  But honestly, as well written as this story is, I’m not sure I’m going to continue on.

As I stated before this author creates believable, viable human beings for her stories.  The settings, locations, and events that occur translate as authentic and real.  For example, the beaten-up old trailer and disreputable, grungy trailer park where Shane and his brother Jason, reside, is so vividly described that the reader will have no problem visualizing such a desperately poor and hard scrabble sort of existence both brothers have been living.  That aura of desperation and near poverty coats Jason and Shane, leaving them both with a grayness that can’t be washed off.  That’s marvelous writing.  And it continues with Noel and Tristan’s relationship, and carries over into all the interchanges and dialog between every main character here.  So why wouldn’t I want to continue? Why? Because of the unrelenting angst and pain these characters go through.

These characters have been abused, raped, imprisoned, beaten, left brain damaged, scarred, impoverished, victimized in almost every way and it’s not just in the past.  Its past, present, (and if I read the clues right), it continues well into their future…books that is.  The pain and abuse rains down on these people like a 40 year flood that’s just getting started.  Just when you think there’s a possibility of something positive happening or a hopeful turn of events,  the author beats the crap out of that bead of light with a steel baseball bat.  It’s not just the characters that are left reeling, but the reader as well.

I can take angst if it is balanced out with scenes that leave the characters and the reader feeling happy or hopeful or even satisfied that all the time spent reading that story was worthwhile.  And for me, that just didn’t happen.  I felt as beaten up as the characters when it was all over.  And the hints and clues laid down by A.M. Arthur for Tristan’s story made me feel worse.

There are other elements that some readers will have issues with like the constant lying and the out of relationship sex, neither of which bothered me. A. M. Arthur lays out a rational and logical reason for both of those things happening, including an abusive background for Shane that makes his bad decisions seem realistic if sad.  No, it’s that I want more in a romance, more love, more hope, less constant  sorrow.  So, I am leaving this story and series right here.  Not all readers will feel the same.  Others will have a higher tolerance for hurt/comfort or near constant angst then I do, and they will adore this story and most like the series too.  Plus its just that well written that you shouldn’t be surprised to find the tears flowing as certain scenes unfold. So…what’s left to say.

I’m not giving any recommendations one way or the other.  Instead, you know what type of reader you are so I will leave the decision up to you.  I have read and loved A.M. Arthur’s stories in the past, including some in the Cost of Repairs series like Foundation of Trust.  Arthur is a terrific writer. I will continue to pick up and read Arthur’s new books as they arrive (mostly).  I will let you all into what I discover!

Cover artist: ?  I loved that cover, intimate and sexy.  Too bad I have no idea who created it.

A Paul B Review: Spearmint Warning by John Amory

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Spearmint Warning coverA regular customer who orders spearmint tea draws the attention of Thad, a barista at the coffee shop. Thad will learn what this man and the strange dreams he has been having are connected somehow.

Thad is the barista at a college coffee shop. For several weeks, a man enters the shop shortly after Thad begins his shift, orders a spearmint tea and sits wearing his sunglasses until closing time. His manager asks Thad to find out more about the man as his behavior unnerves most of the employees. Thad finds the man,  Guy, is blind and interested in Thad.

Later that night, Thad catches up with Guy and they talk. That night Thad has a dream of Guy at a French estate. Then Guy asks Thad for a date after his shift. While sitting on a park bench, Guy stops an attempt on Thad’s life. When asked what was going on, Guy insists that Thad follow him home so that he can explain about himself and the attack. Guy is actually a vampire and his creator has been obsessed with him for years.

This is the first novel by John Amory that I have read. The author does a good job in explaining his view of the paranormal world. He does this through a conversion between Guy and Thad about the “real world” of vampires as compared to most modern media. It also explains how Thad’s dreams at the beginning of the novel fit in with the story.

Another difference with Mr. Amory’s work is that this is not a case of instant love that a lot of paranormal writers use. I loved how at the end of the book, after dealing with the crazy creator that there is the possibility of a future romance between Thad and Guy and they were not mad crazy in love already. It left me wanting to know what is going to happen next to these two.

The cover art by BSClay is of a shirtless man with blood running down his chest. I assume it is to represent Guy after his conversion to a vampire. The extra blood streaks on either side of him while representative to the story behind Guy’s conversion, kind of detract from the cover for me.

A Stella Review: The Biker’s Pup by Sean Michael

Rating 3 stars out of 5

The Biker's Pup coverWhip came to the Gay Riders Carnival fundraiser weekend looking for a good time, but what he found was infinitely better.

Whip always has a good time at the Gay Riders Carnival, and this year he’s hoping to meet up with some studs and top last year’s festivities. The last thing he expects when he walks into his cabin is to be nearly bowled over by a skinny lad with a bruised jaw.

Nick came to the Carnival with his so-called Master Dirk, but instead of having a good time, things moved quickly from bad to worse and Dirk responded to his safeword with a punch. Running away and hiding was Nick’s only option.

Broke, alone and not entirely sure how he’s going to get home, Nick thinks Whip is a dream come to life and he’s just waiting for the other shoe to drop. For his part, Whip is drawn to the sweet pup and falls hard for Nick over the course of the long weekend.

But what’s going to happen when the weekend is over?

Being a huge Sean fan, I try to be objective in the rating and not going with 5 stars, so I give this book just 3 stars cause I have to complain with the author about the sex part. I’m used to high levels of hotness and unfortunately The Biker’s Pup wasn’t so hot. And I want to add that if you have some issues with the BDSM world, you don’t have to worry, in this book it’s very light. There’s just a short demo of a figging (I had no idea something like that existed, if you are curious have a look http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figging).

Speaking of the sex aspect, can I have a rant moment please? Some people like to define some of the Sean’s books using the PWP acronym (Porn Without Plot). I know I’m biased cause I’m a Sean fan but I really hate this description, although I’m the first to say there isn’t a lot of plot in this book and in other ones. That’s one of the the reason I read them. The other reason is that I don’t like watch porn, I prefer to read about it. A couple of weeks ago I read Guns, Leather and Tinsel and that was so hot and sexy, I found it compelling. Then a week ago I start the Mannies Incorporated series and there was a plot, not just steamy sex, but a sweet and funny story. I love this author’s writing cause, looking at all his works, I can find the perfect book that fit my day mood.

The Biker’s Pup by Sean Michael is not one of that dark biker’s stories I lately read. What I read was a sweet and tender story, sometimes a little too much, but it was very welcome.

Whip goes to the Gay Riders Carnival weekend to enjoy some fun times with a friend or a sub and to join the Mr Leatherman contest. When he comes to the cabin he rented, he finds Nick, a young man abused by his ex dom, the worst dom ever, who actioned Nick as a slave and beat him frequently. The poor Nick is lonely, without money and without a future.

“…just tell me what you want.”
“A place,” Nicky finally finished. “Like somewhere I belong.”

But Whip is sweet and protective of this scared twink. They soon feel a bond that will lead them to hope for more. Whip will find his pup and Nick an angel, who will help him to straighten out his life.

“Oh… Are you for real? You’re like an angel in leather who showed up just when I needed you.”
Whip snorted. “I’m not an angel, pup.”
“You’re starting to seem like my angel.”

They will spent a weekend together at the Carnival, having fun and some (not too hot) sex and Whip will try to convince his pup to come home with him. But Nick is used to people treating him badly and wanting him just for the sex. Can he convince himself that Whip is for real and for the long haul?

“I’ll hold on tight.”
“I’m counting on it, pup.”

So, if you like some light BDSM with a caring dom and a sweet sub, I can totally recommend The Biker’s Pup to you.

Cover art by Posh Gosh. I’m sorry to say I don’t like it. Of course it’s well done and surely could have been used for another book, cause in my opinion it doesn’t fit the story, or better the characters. The models on the cover really aren’t how I imagined Nick and Whip in my mind.

KMIMWIANBanner300x250

Author Pat Henshaw Bio:

Born in the Heartland of Nebraska, Pat Henshaw has made America hers by living in Texas, Colorado, Northern Virginia, and Northern California. She has found joy in visiting Mexico, Canada, Europe, Nicaragua, Thailand, and Egypt, and relishes trips to Rome, Italy, and Eugene, Oregon, to see family.

Pat has spent her life surrounded by words: Teaching English composition at the junior college level; writing book reviews for newspapers, magazines, and websites; helping students find information as a librarian; and promoting PBS television programs.

Two of her fondest memories are touching time when she put her hands on the pyramids and experiencing pure whimsy when she interviewed Caroll Spinney (Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch). Her triumphs are raising two incredible daughters who daily amaze her with their power and compassion. Her supportive husband keeps her grounded in reality when she threatens to drift away writing fiction.

Our Interview with Pat Henshaw…

1. You’ve lived all over…do you have a place that has felt like home instantly? And what and where is it?

I love Pacific Grove CA which is a tiny community adjacent to Monterey CA on the coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It’s the winter home of the monarch butterflies, and butterfly motifs are all over town. The main reason I like it is that it’s where I can relax, be myself, and hear the characters and their stories in my head.

2. What pulls you forward to somewhere or away from other places?

I’m drawn to places with diversity and interesting people where a live-and-let-live attitude seems to be everyone’s mode of operation. I also love settings where people are creative, little art galleries or unpretentious cafes with superior food. I’m more comfortable in small spaces than larger ones. I do poorly in settings where everyone is striving to prove their worth to everyone else through bragging or ostentatious displays of wealth. I’m particularly uneasy in crowded spaces, conventions and the like.

3. Favorite coffee to get you going in the morning?

Unlike my character Jimmy, I don’t drink coffee. My morning coffee is iced tea.

4. I loved the blurb and excerpt for this story. It made me want to get my hands on it immediately. Where did the inspiration for this story come from?

LOL. You’ve got me! I have no idea. You know you’ve heard authors say things like “the character just came to me and I went with it”? Well, I hate to say it, but Jimmy and Guy just “came” to me out of the blue. I’m so happy you loved the blurb and excerpt. I hope you enjoy the story too. I had a lot of fun writing it–and yes, I know it sounds strange to say that I had fun sitting and typing for hours on end.

5. What was the muse or inspiration for these characters?

Oh, no! See the previous answer. I really do wish I could come up with something concrete here. I once interviewed Arlo Guthrie who said that songs were floating around in the air all the time and he just plucked one out when it came by. Sounded a little silly at the time, but now I think I know what he was saying. This story was just floating around–it’s a modern tweak of Rumplestiltskin without killing any children, after all–and I just happened to be around to pluck it out of the ethos. And how new-agey does that sound?

6. Why this particular setting?

I live near the Sierra Foothills and have relatives and friends who live in the area where the story is set. When Jimmy, Guy, Fredi, Max, and the Behr brothers came to me, this is where they lived. I know, go figure!

7. Do you plan to incorporate some of the places you have traveled into future stories?

Actually, I have. I self-published a vampire novel, The Vampire’s Food Chain, last year in which I incorporated Egypt, Nicaragua, and a few other places into the setting. I like to call the novel “not your grandma’s vampire novel” because I’ve interwoven the stories of ancient and modern gods and vampires. It’s not the huge leap you might think–they both live forever, right?

8. Favorite coffee shop (can you answer that without getting into trouble with baristas everywhere?)

Cafe Dantorels, with La Bou as a backup. I’ve been going to Dantorels for decades. I’ve watched the various owners put their stamp on the building and the menu, but there’s something about the space that calls to me and makes me love being there.
9. Favorite cuisine to accompany your coffee…

Oh, well, there’s nothing like a good croissant or pastry, is there? I think the French have the concept of sitting, chatting, drinking, eating, and enjoying life just right. Slow Food makes much more sense than fast food to me. Besides, how else will I be able to catch those stories floating in the air if I’m not letting myself be open to them?

10. What’s Next for Pat Henshaw?

I’ve submitted the sequel to What’s in a Name?, another novella called Redesigning Max about Jimmy’s good friend, Fredi Zimmer and the outdoor sports store owner Max who just needs a little courage to make his move. I’m currently writing The Behr Facts, the third in the novella series, about the construction company that’s mentioned in the previous books. I have an idea about a fourth book, but I’m caught up in this first.

Also, I’m writing the sequel to The Vampire’s Food Chain, called Devil’s Food in which the protagonist, a vampire named Shawn, must visit hell and make a difference there. Finding hell is the challenge at the moment. It’s spread so many places!
Thank you!

About What’s In A Name?

Barista Jimmy Patterson thinks it’s a good idea to get rip-roaring drunk on his birthday after he’s dumped by his boyfriend. When the burly owner of Stonewall’s Bar rescues Jimmy, the night starts to look up.

Now Jimmy just wants to know the bartender’s first name since he’s worn a different name tag every time Jimmy’s seen him. “Guy” Stone gives Jimmy seven guesses, one for each night he takes Jimmy out on a date.

While Jimmy’s trying to come up with his name, he’s distracted by the destruction of his coffee shop and what looks more and more like a hate crime.

A Special look from Guy’s Point of View:

Falling in love in your 30s, I’m here to tell you, is the shits. Take it from me. You’re rolling along, minding your own business–in my case as the working owner of Stonewall Saloon–and then wham! You think you’re immune, especially since you see so many crap-ass guys doing stupid shit every night. Maybe it’s the bar. Who knows? I never thought good guys went to bars a lot until I met Jimmy.

Along about November a year or so ago, Jimmy Patterson and his stupid as fuck boyfriend started dropping by Stonewall three, four times a week around 8 or 9 and staying sometimes until closing, but mostly for a couple, three hours.

The boyfriend, this asshole named Alex, would parade in wearing whatever passed as the latest style and park Jimmy on a stool at the bar.

Now, see, Jimmy’s the real friendly type. Shoot, he was even nice to Gus, a regular left over from when my Grandpa was owner and bartender. Gus can’t see or hear too well now and for some reason gets on the nerves of my younger customers all the time. Mostly because you gotta yell and repeat what you say to him about a million times. And then he still doesn’t get what you said.

Jimmy never blinked an eye at Gus. Just treated him like all the other guys who sat down next to him to bullshit.

“Good boy, that Jimmy,” Gus’d tell me over and over when Jimmy and Dickhead came in.

I had to agree. During slow periods, Jimmy and I’d talk about all sorts of things. He wanted to open a coffee shop in Old Town, around where Stonewall is, and asked me questions about places along the strip. We even talked quarterlies during tax time and shit like that.

There’s a few queer-run places now the big city guys have discovered us, and Jimmy wanted to know how they got along. Yeah, sure, there’s some resistance from blowhards like Tommy Thompson and a few others, but mostly we’re a live and let live kinda place.

At Christmas we laughed about some of the stupid ass holiday decorations along Main Street. Jimmy’d even asked if I was going to decorate. My answer? Blow me. For a minute it looked like he considered it.

The more we talked, the more lost I was. Got to the point I told one of the other bartenders to come get me if I was in the back when Jimmy came in. Go figure. Never done that in my life.

In the meantime, every time they were here, Dickhead the boyfriend was making the rounds. I caught him a few times sucking cock in the back. Made me so mad I nearly hit him up one side and down the other. I didn’t though cuz I didn’t want Jimmy to stop coming in.

It bothered me though. You know, one of those moral dilemmas. Should I tell Jimmy or not? So I started asking around.

Didn’t help when I learned Jimmy’d moved into a condo with the Dickhead. What kind of friend tells a guy his boyfriend’s a scumbag? On the other hand, what kind of friend keeps the news to himself? Moral dilemma, like I said.

Okay, so we’re coming up to Jimmy’s birthday, which I know because after I had another bartender card him, I wrote the date down. I decide to give the Dickhead one more chance. See if he could man up on the big night. I knew a bunch of Jimmy’s friends were gonna throw him a party at Stonewall, you know try to get him drunk, all the regular crap. So I’d better be seeing Dickhead stand up and act right.

By that point, I’ve already been smacked around by Jimmy-love and am ready to beat down walls to make him happy on his big day. He’s never gonna see his 20s again and he’s feeling the pain. At least that’s what he’s said. I just want the guy to be happy, real happy.

What happened? Well, yeah, you gotta read Jimmy’s side of the story. I mean, don’t listen to me. I can’t tell a story about love. Shit, I can barely tell a clean joke. Just listen to Jimmy. He’s got it covered.

Excerpt:

Stonewall [Saloon] was chaos when I got there. Guy and another bartender were mixing drinks as fast as they could. I squeezed in at the end of the bar near the hatchway and sat on an abandoned stool there.

I didn’t think Guy had seen me come in, so when there was a lull in the frenetic pace and he was nearly within arm’s reach, I called out, “What’s a guy gotta do to get a drink in this place?”

Guy looked up, grinned at me, and yelled back, “Fuck the bartender.”

A slim man sitting next to me perked up, gave Guy the once-over, and yelled, “Okay!”

Guy’s startled gaze met mine, and we broke out laughing.

The man next to me sighed and slumped over his beer. “I knew it was too good to be true,” he mumbled.
I patted him on the shoulder.

“Maybe next time,” I commiserated with him.

“Right,” he answered glumly.

A Giveaway and Guest Blog  for my newest release… Road Trip

My Road Trip by A. F. Henley

Is there anything more exciting (and at the same time as nerve-wracking) as the prospect of taking a road trip? If everything goes smoothly, it can be one of the best times of a person’s life – odd places, interesting sights, the freedom of the open road, and the opportunity to experience something brand new. I think the idea calls to those of us who still have some of the wanderer buried deep down under the partitioned, organized, drudgery of day-to-day existence.

I took my own road trip while I was working on Road Trip, although mine was more of the Eastern side of the United States as opposed to Boyd’s journey of ‘sea to shining sea.’ It was crazy exhilarating, at times it was more than a little bit scary (yes, things really are different on the other side of that there border), but I can honestly say that I’ve never felt so empowered by something as simple as taking holidays before. I stopped where I wanted to stop, looked at what I wanted to look at, and if the idea of wondering off my chosen path hit me, I went with it.

I learned a lot as I travelled. For example:

• American border guards art not interested in your sense of humor, thank you very much, please step out of the car.

• The people in New York are either pleasantly content or grumpily hostile, and these two personas can be swapped for the either in less than a second.

• Pennsylvania is beautiful—resplendent in hills and mountains with breathtaking views, full of winding roads and courteous drivers, not to mention all kinds of back-to-nature goodness—and you will spend more time looking at your map thinking, how can I possibly not be through this state YET?!, because of it.

• Maryland is a super cool state to travel through because you get to mark off an entire state in what seems like the blink of an eye.

• When something goes wrong on the roads in Virginia, it goes very, very wrong. (By the time I arrived at my destination I had coined, and already begun overusing the phrase, “I blame Virginia for everything.”)

• The Outer Banks in North Carolina is where I will someday go to die. For all the right reasons.

• Unless I end up in Tennessee, as it is almost as beautiful as NC but doesn’t have those super-icky beach bugs. Unfortunately, it also doesn’t have the super-awesome beach.

• There are vending machines in the U.S. for almost everything, including placing food orders (and, apparently, hospital scrubs?!). This makes me far more wary than it probably should. Nothing says technological advancement like the slow but steady removal of human beings from damn near every process known to mankind. One day we’ll have a society with nothing left but the robotics and the government… And there, see? I have digressed. Because that is a story for another time.

See, the most important thing I learned along the way was that there is a whole heck of a lot of truth to the adage that the expedition is just as important (if not more) than where you end up. And if life truly is a journey and not a destination, then I’ll happily take mine behind the wheel of my car, with the sun through the windshield and the radio blasting, any day.

Speaking of the radio blasting… how’s about a playlist to carry us through the rest of the tour?

Until next time! ❤

Blurb & Cover for Road Trip!Road Trip Cover

For as long as Boyd can remember, he’s been pushing pins into a map. Carson City, Las Vegas, Albuquerque—all places he wants to see, for a dozen different reasons that wouldn’t mean a thing to anyone else. When he finally gets a chance to purchase the ’69 Road Runner of his dreams, at a price that even he can manage, Boyd jumps at the opportunity.

Oliver seems like just another kid with a broken dream when their paths cross in Vegas. Against Boyd’s better judgment, he offers to let Oliver hitch along for the ride when Oliver confides the need to get out and get gone.

But it’s not long before Boyd realizes Oliver’s reasons for running are more complicated—and more dangerous—than Oliver let on. But Boyd doesn’t like people who play hardball, and he definitely doesn’t like people messing with a man who’s managed to light a fuse that Boyd forgot he had.

Excerpt

It was just another day—just another twenty-four hour period between all the rest of them. Sure, thirty-five years prior, Boyd’s mother had been forcing out a nine-pound, some-odd-ounces mound of entirely unimpressed infant from the depths of her lady parts, but Boyd figured that was an event that should win her more kudos than it should him. As far as celebrating his birthday went, Boyd’s big plan was the acquisition of a bottle of Jim Beam, followed by the slow-but-steady process of sipping himself into an alcohol-induced stupor.

It hadn’t taken long for thirty-five to catch up to him, and it was one of those birthdays where three and a half decades hit like seven. His back ached from sprawling on cold concrete for too many hours. His finger joints burned from years of gripping air tools and turning wrenches. He was bitter and disillusioned, tired and worn out, and doing his best not to lament over the possibility that life truly was as good as it was going to get.

Until he saw the email.

The auto trader website had promised the best deals in the country delivered directly to one’s inbox, free of charge. Simply enter some personal info, vehicle preferences, and wait. Boyd had been a member for almost four years, but it had got to the point where most of the ‘awesome’ notifications were marked and deleted before they were even read. This one had pictures, though, and even if it would take his ancient computer several minutes to chug them into existence, opening it would mean Boyd could live vicariously with somebody else’s chromed baby for a few moments.

The car was a beauty. The body was mint, the engine supposedly ran like a clock, and it was drive-away ready. So when he saw the price, Boyd almost ignored it. A typo, he assumed. Someone forgot a one. An asking price of six-point-two was unheard of. He even went so far as to close and delete the email, to shut down his computer, locate his keys, and head for the front door before he reconsidered. Because, what if…?

What if finally…?

Henley was born with a full-blown passion for run-on sentences, a zealous indulgence in all words descriptive, and the endearing tendency to overuse punctuation. Since the early years Henley has been an enthusiastic writer, from the first few I-love-my-dog stories to the current leap into erotica.

A self-professed Google genius, Henley lives for the hours spent digging through the Internet for ‘research purposes’ which, more often than not, lead seven thousand miles away from first intentions but bring Henley to new discoveries and ideas that, once seeded, tend to flourish.

Henley has been proudly working with LT3 since 2012, and has been writing like mad ever since—an indentured servant to the belief that romance and true love can mend the most broken soul. Even when presented in prose.

A PaulB Review: The Vampire’s Geek (Wolves of Stone Ridge #26) by Charlie Richards

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The Vampire's Geek coverTullion Kuznetsov has been on the run for the past couple of months, accused of a crime he did not commit. A chance meeting in a supermarket unites him with his beloved in Stone Ridge, Tullion must now return to Europe to clear his name to be with the man fate has decided for him.

On the run after being accused of killing his coven’s leader, Tullion Kuznetsov travels from Europe and finds himself in the small town of Stone Ridge, Colorado. After securing himself some temporary housing, he heads off to the local supermarket to get some food. While there, he believes he has encountered his beloved, what vampires call their fated mate.

Toby Dallow, a lab assistant who came to Stone Ridge when his friend and boss moved there to be with his werewolf mate, finds the tall blond in the supermarket attractive. But he never thinks he has a chance with this stud since he considers himself to be an overweight geek who wears glasses. When the stranger approaches Toby, he thinks the man must be playing some kind of game as someone that good looking would never go for him.

They head to Toby’s home where they have a night of passion. Later that night, several of Toby’s friends from the local pack show up because he never shows up for the scheduled poker game that night. Tullion is thrilled that Toby knows of paranormals and vampires. Tullion then recounts to those assembled the circumstances of his coven leader’s murder as he knows them. The pack members tell Tullion that if the bond is complete with Toby, they can offer some protection and would be willing to seek the assistance of their vampire friends on the American council to help him. After the meeting breaks up, Tullion tells Toby to get dressed and then Tullion slips away. Having found his beloved, his must return to Europe to clear his name.

This is the twenty sixth novel in the Wolves of Stone Ridge series. While it can be read as a standalone, having read the previous books would help understand the characters better.
I love how Tullion builds up the self confidence of Toby. Toby considers himself unwanted by most men, especially one as good looking as Tullion. Tullion tell Toby time and again that he is exactly the type of man that he finds attractive.

There were a couple of things that I had problems with the book. First, Toby has been around paranormals for a while but did not connect Tullion’s biting his neck with him being a paranormal of some kind. Second, Tullion ran away after being offered help from Toby’s friends in clearing his name. If his beloved trusted these men, I would think that Tullion would have given them the benefit of the doubt to help him out.

The cover art by Angela Waters depict Toby and Tullion as I would expect them. The bow tie and glasses bring out the geek in Toby.

A MelanieM Review: Chance To Be King by Sue Brown

Rating: 3.25 stars out of 5

Chance to be KingAction adventure actor actor Eric Pawlowski has gone from movie set to move set for two years without a break and its beginning to take its tole. Erie desperately needs a break from his movie career and the crippling migraines and stress that come with it.   Eric and his two beloved labs head out to a rural retreat, complete with woods and a cottage by the lake. But mishaps ensue almost immediately when Eric’s dogs manage to tumble his only neighbor into the sand during a raucous walk.

Fortunately Thomas is quick to forgive, and soon he, Eric, and Eric’s two dogs are palling around like they’ve known each other for years. But an intense encounter with a stranger on the beach makes Eric question exactly who Thomas is.  With the towns people starting to interfere with their budding relationship and secrets that are starting to come out, Eric has to decide what’s important, his career or his love for Thomas.

When his rented cabin catches fire in the middle of the night and the firemen call it arson, it confirms Eric’s suspicions that Thomas is hiding something.  To keep Eric with him, it’s up to Thomas to come clean about who he is… and his involvement in a decade-old web of tragedy and revenge into which Eric has unwittingly walked.

Chance To Be King by Sue Brown was a bit of a mixed bag.  I adore this author and gobble up her stories as quick as they are released.  Chance to Be King has many of the wonderful qualities I expect to encounter in a Sue Brown novel but really none of the depth or follow through.  One example would be Thomas and Eric’s relationship.  Sue Brown loves for her characters to feel an instant attraction that turns deep and loving very quickly.  While not a fan of that trope, Brown always lays a realistic and compelling foundation for her characters feelings, a foundation so well built that you believe in her characters and their relationship completely.  That didn’t really happen for me here.

Neither Thomas or Eric came across as layered, charismatic individuals.  Who did?   Eric’s dogs.  I loved them.  But their owner as a movie star?  Or Thomas because of what he turned out to be?  No, they seemed to flat to be viable human beings we should care about.  In fact the other townspeople felt more alive than the main characters did.

What else felt like a marvelous Sue Brown element?  The setting and her descriptions of the location that brought it vividly to life.   The lake and its shores, the small town and old lanes….perfect and authentically conveyed.  This story has wonderful bones, all it needs is to be fleshed out and made whole.

I enjoyed it but knowing it was a Sue Brown story, my expectations were higher than the story reached.  For others, you might find your enjoyment not hindered by such thoughts and anticipation.  I will leave that up to you.  As for me, I am eagerly awaiting the next book to arrive.

Cover Design: DWS Photography.  Just ok, very generic, says nothing about the story.
