-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

New Vampire Justice is the law enforcement agency tasked with policing vampires in a world where humans know vampires exist. Vampires aren’t the superhuman, preternatural creatures portrayed by popular media, legends and stories. Vampires are a result of evolution, essentially human but with a need for certain blood proteins in order to survive. Human blood is not necessary due to the advent of synthetic blood. Biting is illegal, except in highly-policed specialized clubs. Vampires are no threat to the Nons (non-vampires).

Despite living and working among the Nons, vampires are third class citizens. They are targets of violence, discrimination, and are viewed by some as less than human. Vampires want equal rights, the same rights as Nons. But not all vampires want equality. Some vampires feel theirs is the dominate race and they should possess the power of the Nons. Their attempts to gain this power increases the tensions between the races. Amid this chaos, the officers of NVJ must keep the peace between vampires and humans, a fight becoming more impossible by the day.

Book 1 starts the series with Carson and Lincoln’s story. Book 1 should be read first to understand the events happening in Book 2 with Justin and Max’s story.

Happy Reading!

Love between a young man with a broken mind and the jaded New Vampire Justice officer who cares for him might be the last hope to stop a human-vampire war….

Justin Masters is stuck in a nightmare. Waking after seven years in a catatonic state, he falls desperately in love with the straight NVJ officer who saved him. Between that and dreams of being tortured and taking pleasure in the pain, which bleed into his waking hours, Justin’s sure he’s starting to crack.

The growing unrest in the vampire world should be Max Kincaid’s focus, but Justin’s struggle, along with Max’s confusing feelings for his ward, have him reeling. When Justin’s attacked, his resulting needs might be more than Max can fulfill, but he’ll be damned if anyone else will touch Justin.

As the NVJ investigates humans missing from a high-end bite club, they uncover a deeper plot that traces back to Justin. If those who want him have their way, there will be bloodshed. Justin and Max are in a fight to save Justin not only from those who would use him, but from his own mind.

Excerpts

Justin

Justin gasped in a breath. Fuck, he’d done it again. Max would be pissed when he got there. And he’d come because he was the only one who could help. Then he’d see that Justin had gotten lost in his head again, lost in the nightmares of his past. Max would want to know why he hadn’t used the techniques from his therapist Walt. Justin grunted. They never worked. But it didn’t matter. He was too far gone to get back on his own. At that point, only physical pain or being wrapped up, practically restrained until he couldn’t move, would center him and bring back to reality.

Great, there was Doc talking with Carson. Doc’s solutions always came in the form of a needle. Drug him. Justin banged his forehead against his knees. Maybe he could bang hard enough to knock himself out, or maybe have a stroke and become a vegetable like Tommy Dennison upstairs. Then Max wouldn’t be burdened with a dependent head case. Max was always pushing Justin to be more independent, rely on himself more. Max, who’d rescued Justin, taken him in, held him whenever he thought he’d shake apart, helped as Justin relearned to take care of himself, his cooking, his laundry, and, hell, even to go outside without falling to pieces. Max’s bid to stop Justin from relying on him was like a knife to his chest.

Justin had fallen in love with Max. Max who was caring, attentive, unflappable. Justin had fallen in love with his crooked grin, his wavy blond hair with the sides that always escaped his ponytail, the way his glasses were always askew, his quiet and contemplative demeanor. Justin believed Max didn’t see a potential lover in him, but a needy little brother. Despite being only two years younger than Max, Justin was still that sixteen-year-old, but now in a man’s body. He couldn’t make it through a day without somehow clinging to Max. What kind of life was that for a straight man who wasn’t even related to Justin?

His chest tightened and pushed his rate of breathing higher. Something horrible was going to happen, and it wouldn’t be his own death as he hoped. He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, and was going to lose it big-time. Again.

Max

Max pulled off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. If a minute went by that he didn’t worry about Justin, it would be a fucking miracle. In the past five months, Justin had made incredible strides in emerging from a body on autopilot. God, it seemed like a lifetime ago Max’s team had been ambushed by Jameson Merrick while on a retrieval mission for Justin. Shoved alone, or what he thought was alone, into a small cinderblock room, Max had found Justin. While he’d aged from pictures Max had seen, Max knew it was him. But he hadn’t been prepared for the state Justin was in.

Justin’s greenish-hazel eyes, dull and lifeless, had stared out into nothing. No emotion. No sign his mind was even in the room. If not for breathing, he could have been mistaken for a statue. A very handsome statue with his creamy skin, freckles dotting his nose and cheeks, which matched his sandy-red hair, and slim body.

Even though Justin wouldn’t respond, Max had spoken about anything and everything, anything to drown out the quiet. At night when the temperature dropped, Max held Justin close to his side, sharing warmth to stop Justin from shivering. Even when night ended, Max still held him, as Justin rested his head on Max’s shoulder. Eventually he had looked up at Max. That’s when he’d caught the cognizance in Justin’s eyes. Hearing Max say his name had brought a frown to Justin’s face that quickly faded. Justin had snuggled in closer and placed his hand on Max’s chest.

Max recalled how that gentle touch had caused his heart to skip a beat. Even then that memory stirred something inside.

Carson Locke is dangerous, even by vampire standards. A rare Tabula Rasa vampire, he can wipe the mind of those he bites—human or vampire. Because of this, he’s lived his entire life in isolation. When his family is murdered, Carson runs from those who want him dead. Injured, starving, and about to be executed, he meets Commander Lincoln Samuels, an officer in the New Vampire Justice police force.

Lincoln, a Sanatore vampire, possesses the gift of healing. The moment he encounters Carson, broken and terrified, trying to steal blood to survive, he is compelled to help the other man—despite the risk to himself. Their bond creates something the world has never seen, but others have plans for Carson, and his destiny was written long before he was born. He’ll either become a tool to control the vampire world, or, with Lincoln by his side, find the courage to fight and become its savior.

Excerpt

…Lincoln nudged the kid’s knee with the toe of his boot. The suspect flinched but didn’t look up. Lincoln crouched and lowered his voice. “Hey, kid. What’s your name?”

Every muscle in the too-thin body shook. There was no answer. From the scream he’d let loose, Lincoln surmised he could talk. He touched the kid’s shoulder. Still he didn’t move, but his shaking ramped up a couple of notches.

“I’m not going to hurt you. You’re safe now.” Lincoln turned to his officers behind him. Of course Dennison was the only one with his gun still drawn. “Holster your weapon, Dennison.”

Dennison hesitated, not bothering to hide his disdain. Lincoln raised his brow. Dennison huffed, then did as he was ordered. Lincoln turned back to the kid. “The guns are put away.”

The kid raised his chin and cocked his head, peering past the dark hair covering his eyes. Large brown eyes, filled with despair, sucker punched Lincoln in the gut. He surveyed the vampire’s sharp cheekbones and jawline, sunken eyes and hollowed cheeks, and… the reddest lips that contrasted with his pale skin. Blood rushed to Lincoln’s groin, and his cock pressed against his jeans. Shit, it was forever since he’d gotten hard on sight. A warm mouth on his dick was generally required before anything stirred below—the hazards of a fuckton of one-night stands and a dead heart.

Damn.

“When was the last time you ate?”

The young vampire stared at Lincoln, and then, as if he’d decided to trust him, answered. “T-ten days ago.”

After ten days the kid should have been attacking every vein in sight, even if he’d never drank straight from a human. He had a shitload of self-control, especially with blood pooling on the floor next to him.

Lincoln looked to Max, who didn’t need for Lincoln to tell him how dire the situation was. He released the kid. He swayed but stayed upright. Max pulled off his jacket and rolled up his sleeve. It was dangerous to allow a starving vampire near a vein, but someone had to feed the kid right then. Lincoln couldn’t be the donor, even if he wanted. He’d have to make sure the guy didn’t drain Max. Of everyone on his team, Max was the most levelheaded. No doubt he was the one who called in the level-one situation. Lincoln trusted Max with his life, and vice versa.

Lincoln tentatively set his hand on the vampire’s shoulder. Power, immense and nearly uncontained, emanated from the kid, unlike anything Lincoln had ever felt. His cock hardened further. Those brown eyes. Fuck.

Lincoln cleared his throat. “I’m sure I don’t have to explain the effects of blood deprivation on a vampire. You’re already past the point where synthesized blood will help.”

The kid’s brown eyes widened, and he shook his head violently. “N-no. I can’t!”

That fear came from only drinking blood from a cup his entire life. Didn’t mean he couldn’t drink from the vein. The thought terrified most vampires who’d never sank their fangs into flesh. Lincoln recalled his first bite at a certified bite club his uncle brought him to. He was sixteen. Humans desiring the bite were able to meet vampires who wanted to drink their blood. Lincoln had been scared shitless. The wrong placement of fangs or sudden jerk of the donor could severely injure the Non and possibly kill them.

For Lincoln, drinking from a human woke some primordial, anamalistic need. The human blood was like an aphrodisiac. Without even taking his cock out of his pants, he’d orgasmed, same as the Non guy he chose. That first bite unearthed a need Lincoln was unable to ignore, bringing him back to the clubs every couple of months.

“I know you’ve probably never done this before, but it’s not that hard. Feel for the pulse with your tongue. That’s where you want to place your fangs. Bite down firmly, but don’t go too fast. Stop once the blood starts to pool on the skin. Pull out and suck.”

Restless movements from his team told Lincoln they’d probably never seen a vampire bite someone as well.

“You’re going to feed him? What the fuck? He broke the law!”

Leave it to Dennison to object. Lincoln clenched his jaw and ignored the rant. Max raised his wrist to the kid’s mouth, but his reaction surpassed fear alone. He yanked against the hands holding him. Terror-filled eyes were glued to Max’s wrist. A war of need and fear raged in the depths of the kid’s eyes.

“I can’t! Get away from me!” The kid gasped and fought for breath as if some horrible monster stalked toward him. “You… d-don’t… under… s-stand!” His adrenaline-fueled state increased his strength as he tried to escape the wrist before him. He was going to hurt himself.

His useless fight annoyed Lincoln. “Calm down, kid! No one’s going to hurt you.”

“Put him out of his misery,” Dennison muttered.

The vampire’s struggle ceased as his entire body stiffened. His eyes flashed white as they rolled up into his head. He slumped forward and was out cold.

“Dammit, lower him to the floor.”

Max and Taylor laid the kid on his stomach. That’s when Lincoln saw the symbol tattooed at the base of his spine.

“Fuck me!”

Things had gone from bad to worse in a split second.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have J.R. Loveless here today. J.R. agree to answer some questions for us and here’s terrific interview that resulted. Welcome, J.R.

~

Hi, good morning/afternoon/evening, depending on where you are in the world! I’m J.R. Loveless and I’m here to introduce a new novella release as well as to answer some really awesome questions proposed by Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words! I want to say thanks to the host here for letting me guest post today. It’s a privilege and an honor to be here.

You Belong With Me was released on November 9th from Dreamspinner Press. The story was inspired by a song and the feeling it sparked inside of me when I heard it. Please continue reading for a glimpse into the story and into some of what makes me the writer I am today. I hope you enjoy the interview and the excerpt from my latest novella.

  • Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal? – My inspiration for books comes from every direction. I read a lot, watch movies, listen to music, but even a single conversation can spark an idea. In fact, even discussing my tattoo that I recently got this year sparked an idea for a new universe of shifters. I could be standing in the shower and an idea will come to be from nowhere. I currently have about six WIPs and another seven ideas written down.
  • Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And  why? – I am definitely a pantzer. I have tried planning or plotting out a story completely from A to Z but by the time I got even a couple of chapters into the story I found myself unable to finish it. Mostly because I was bored with the storyline. I like the mystery of letting my characters write the story as I work on it. It may seem like more work because I have to be careful not to leave plot holes as I go along but at the same time it gives me more of a surprise and more to work with as the story progresses. It leaves it fresh for me really, keeps me on the edge of my seat.
  • Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so? – I prefer paranormal/fantasy. There’s just something about werewolves, vampires, and other creatures, humans being able to shapeshift, just draws me in. Typically when I look for stories, I tend to turn toward those first. I do read contemporary, but there has to be a certain element to it in order for it to grab my attention. I like angst for sure, not just straight up “date and fall in love” romance.
  • If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why? – I think I’d have to choose Seth from Chasing Seth. I’d make him a little less… of a wilting flower so to speak. I’d make him stronger. He started off that way, but after Kasey came into the picture, he kind of trailed off into leaning on Kasey a bit too much and allowed more of his emotions to show through.
  • Can a author have favorites among their characters and do you have them? – Of course! Even though a parent will tell you they don’t play favorites, they always do. I don’t care what anyone says on that front. People will always have favorites of one kind or another. My favorite character out of all of my own would have to be Logan from Touch Me Gently. Who doesn’t want a strong, gorgeous, kind, sweet cowboy to come sweep them off their feet and show them the kind of love and acceptance Logan shows Kaden?
  • If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list? – As I indicated before I love paranormal/urban fantasy so I would definitely be taking shifter stories. I only read gay romance for the most part. Some of my favorite authors are Mary Calmes, Lisa Oliver, and Lynn Hagen. I pretty much read everything by them. I also would have to take my Harry Potter series. 🙂
  • Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why? – I was an early reader, actually. I picked up anything and everything I could. My favorite book as a child was Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. As I grew older I also loved The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley. See the theme? Animal stories! I think that’s why most of my stories usually have an animal in them in some way or another, typically.
  • If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be? – Where’s the Love?

youbelongwithmefs-1Scott has been in love with his best friend Craig for years, but watching Craig with his manipulative boyfriend has worn Scott down, and he knows he needs a break from the pain and maybe a change of scenery and perspective. His twin sister, Karen, convinces him to spend a summer in Paris.

Karen is sick and tired of seeing Scott suffer, and she’s not going to stand for it anymore. She confronts Craig and tells him what he’s been missing by spurning Scott’s affection in favor of a jerk who mistreats him.

When Craig unknowingly breaks Scott’s heart, Craig opens his eyes—and his own heart—to the possibility of a future with Scott. He plans to use the time while Scott’s abroad to orchestrate a romantic surprise that will show Scott they belong together. But when he sees Scott with another man at the airport, Craig fears he’s too late.

Excerpt

Scott

Having slept all day, Scott couldn’t sleep that night. He felt restless and constantly moved his shoulders. Something seemed off and he couldn’t put his finger on it. After some major debating with himself, he finally turned on his cell phone. There were multiple texts from Craig, but he couldn’t bring himself to read them. The odd thing was, once the phone was on, there were no calls or texts. His brooding grew worse.

Stanley tried everything he could to distract him from thinking, but even the smallest thing reminded Scott of Craig. They hadn’t gone a full twenty-four hours in their entire friendship without at least talking to each other. Sadly, last night might be the last time they spoke for a while. Craig would be so pissed at him for leaving without saying good-bye.

That would lead to Scott having to explain why. Could he finally tell him? After all this time? Would Craig hate him? Pity him? It might even end their friendship. Could he survive that? Questions raced each other around and around inside his head, never letting up as the hours drifted by at a slow pace.

“Scott,” Stanley said with exasperation, as if he’d called his name more than once. “Come on. It’s your turn.”

They were in the middle of playing Monopoly. Scott gave a chagrined smile. “Sorry. Guess my mind isn’t all here.”

“Would you rather watch a movie?” Stanley was trying to keep his face passive, blank. Scott knew he felt bad for him.

Scott shrugged. “If you’d prefer.”

They cleaned up the game, and Stanley popped in an action movie that didn’t have a speck of romance. “Want some popcorn?” he offered.

“Nah. I’m not really hungry.” In fact, Scott hadn’t eaten all day. The thought of food made him feel sick to his stomach.

Not more than thirty minutes into the movie, Stanley fell asleep. Scott heard his soft snuffle and smiled. He stood up and pulled the afghan from the back of the couch to cover him. He carefully removed Stanley’s wire-framed glasses to set them on the coffee table. It reminded him of the many times Craig had fallen asleep while they were watching a movie late at night.

Scott sighed and wearily sank down into the easy chair nearby. He knew it was time to let Craig go, but how would he find the strength he needed to do it? It wasn’t fair to Craig if he just cut him from his life. Craig didn’t know.

He wasn’t even sure how he let himself fall in love with Craig. But he clearly remembered the day he realized it. They were playing basketball outside his house, and Craig stripped off his shirt to wipe the sweat from his face. Scott’s eyes were drawn to Craig’s chest and stomach. The sun glinted off the beads of sweat like diamonds. Craig tossed the shirt at him teasingly. “What? You want my hot bod?” He flexed his miniscule muscles arrogantly.

Maybe that was Scott’s chance, but he swallowed hard and shakily said, “No. Who’d want your skinny-chicken self?”

Craig let out an indignant shout and rushed at him. Scott tried to run, but Craig was faster and tackled him in the grass before he started to tickle him. Tears were rolling by the time Craig collapsed onto the grass next to him, huffing from his own laughter. His eyes were sparkling with happiness and affection. “Buds forever, right?”

As he looked into Craig’s eyes, Scott’s heart started to pound so hard against his rib cage. And an overwhelming sense of wanting to kiss his beautiful lips washed over him. He managed to choke out, “Yeah.”

Suzanne van Rooyen Shares Thoughts on Writing, and the release of ‘Obscura’ Burning (release day author guest post)

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Suzanne van Rooyen here today.  Suzanne agreed to share her thoughts about writing and her latest novel, Obscura Burning.  Welcome, Suzanne, thanks for answering some questions for us.

~

  • Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from? A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

It really depends. Inspiration comes to me from so many different places, but most often it tends to come from art or music. I regularly trawl through Deviantart for images that speak to me or demand a story. I similarly often find myself imagining the backstory or certain songs. Some of those imaginings have turned into stories and some are still waiting to be written.

  • Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And why?

I used to be a pantzer, but I’ve come to realize the importance of having an outline, even if it’s just a seven-point plot arc or rough sketch of the protagonist’s character arc. Since I’ve started writing fantasy, planning has become imperative in order to keep track not only of characters and plot, but of all the world-building. These days I rarely start writing without having some kind of plan to work from.

  • If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?

This is an interesting question. I pretty much had this opportunity with Obscura Burning since this is the second edition. Harmony Ink allowed me a round of edits and I was able to rework a few story points, but most importantly, my protagonist. I must’ve been in a pretty dark place when I originally wrote this story because Kyle was so bitter and resentful. I couldn’t really relate to him anymore so, without compromising his core personality, I reworded a few things and let other things affect him to a greater or lesser extent, making him a slightly less unlikeable person – I hope!

  • Can a author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

Hm, I’m not sure. It’s a bit like asking a parent to say who their favourite child is. I have moments where I might prefer one or the other, but I love them all!

  • If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

Anything and everything by Neil Gaiman. I’d also want the Raven Boys series by Maggie Stiefvater to keep me company. Those two authors are quite easily my favourites.

  • Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

Both, my mom always read to me at bedtime and I started reading by myself or with my parents from a really young age. Books had a huge impact on my life, one in particular that still haunts me is The Voices of Silence by Bel Mooney about a little girl growing up in Romania at the time of the 1989 revolution.

  • If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be?

As a romance novel? Um, I have no idea… I rarely read romance so I’m quite clueless about good titles, but if ever I were to write my memoir or autobiography, I’d want to call it ‘Remember me as a time of day,‘ which is a song title from one of my favourite bands, Explosions in the Sky.

The world’s going to end in fire…and it’s all Kyle’s fault.

Kyle Wolfe’s world is about to crash and burn. Just weeks away from graduation, a fire kills Kyle’s two best friends and leaves him permanently scarred. A fire that Kyle accidentally set the night he cheated on his boyfriend Danny with their female friend, Shira. That same day, a strange new planet, Obscura, appears in the sky. And suddenly Kyle’s friends aren’t all that dead anymore. Each time Kyle goes to sleep, he awakens to two different realities. In one, his boyfriend Danny is still alive, but Shira is dead. In the other, it’s Shira who’s alive…and now they’re friends with benefits.

Shifting between realities is slowly killing him, and he’s not the only one dying. The world is dying with him. He’s pretty sure Obscura has something to do with it, but with his parents’ marriage imploding and realities shifting each time he closes his eyes, Kyle has problems enough without being the one in charge of saving the world…

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have T.A. Chase here today to share a bit about herself, writing and whatever comes to mind. Welcome, T.A!

~

I’m T.A. Chase and I write gay romance. Thank you for having me today. I thought I’d ramble a little bit and let you get to know me. Hopefully you think it’s interesting.

I draw a lot of my inspiration from real life. Situations I get involved in or I watch unfold in front of me. It might be a snippet of an overheard conversation. (Yes, I’ll admit to eavesdropping…lol) Sometimes a phrase caught as I’m walking past can spark an idea. In fact, one of my works in progress sprang from hearing a mother say, “Wait a minute. Your brother’s stuck.” I have two chapters of a new book done based on that comment, plus the idea for the next one in the series.

I’ve gotten a lot of ideas from song lyrics. In fact quite a few of my titles are phrases from songs. Maybe because I love songs that tell a story. It doesn’t matter if it’s about heartbreak or happiness as long as there’s a phrase or lyric that catches my attention.

I have written several series based on legends and myths. I love taking them and twisting them into new ones or re-interpreting them. Like making Mordred and Lucifer relatively good guys, or at least not the villains legends have made them out to be. It’s fun to think ‘what if’ sometimes and change things up.

Of course there are times when I start out with a very clear idea for a character like who he’ll fall in love with or even who he is. Then as I’m writing, the plot morphs and twists. I find my character is in a completely different place. That’s the fun and agony of being a pantser.

In a way, I like learning about my characters and their stories the same way my readers do; one page at a time. Heck, some times it’s a paragraph at a time, the characters seem to take control of their own stories. I swear it’s as though they grab a hold of my fingers (whether I’m using my laptop or a pen) and write what they want.

I know that sounds a little crazy, but I’m sure if you were to ask a majority of authors, they’ll all have moments when their characters have rebelled against the plan set out for them.

In Why I Love Geeks, I’ll admit I thought it would go in one direction, then suddenly we’re in a completely different spot. Now I think where the story ended up was fun and interesting, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Geeks is a rom-com/romantic suspense mish-mash, imo. The first comedy I attempted. I actually love to write fantasies or paranormals most of all. I think it’s because I can create any kind of world with any rules I like.

I’ve written in almost every genre (except horror because I don’t read it, I’m not sure I’d be able to write a truly scary believable story) Contemporaries and historicals are difficult in some ways to write because a writer has to do research to make the story as accurate as possible.

But reading and writing fantasies and paranormals is fun. Some of my favorite comfort reads are fantasies. There’s something about being able to immerse myself in an entirely different world where magic is real or there are elves and unicorns. It makes our hum-drum world seem so ordinary. It might have something to do with the fact that many of the first books I read were fantasies with strong female characters, which might not have anything to do with my stories. Yet I learned what great world building should be like as long as the characters were believable.

If I were stranded on a desert island and I could take some books with me though, I’d have most of Megan Derr’s books because her fantasies are some of my favorite re-reads. Also, I’d throw in some Mary Calmes and Amy Lane. Their contemporaries and fantasies are basically on ‘speed dial’ in my Kindle and book shelves.

What all the books have in common is characters I can believe in and worlds that are believable, exciting and fun. Which is what I hope to create in my own stories.

I hope you didn’t mind my rambling, but I do hope it gave you some insight into my writing process.

I also hope you’ll take a moment to check out my up-coming re-release, Why I Love Geeks. It’s been expanded, so there’s new material.

 About Why I Love Geeks

2nd Edition

A Why I Love…. Novel

New York City Homicide Detective Chuck Davidson is a guy’s guy. He likes sports, beer, and classic cars—fancy gadgets, not so much. When yet another high-tech phone goes on the fritz, he knows he needs help, and he meets a man who loves technology as much as he hates it—cute but awkward biochemist Herbert Pommerset.

Herb’s never been with a man—not even on a date. He hides behind his research, daydreaming about what it might be like to find someone special. A malfunctioning phone causes his path to cross with a sexy older detective, and Herb wishes he’d spent less time studying science and more learning how to flirt, because he can think of some experiments he’d like to conduct with Chuck. None of his considerable intelligence is helping him express his desires to the other man.

Just when it seems they might overcome their differences, Herb’s research puts him in danger. He’s made a discovery that could cost him his life, and Chuck must use his very different talents to rescue the geek he’s coming to love.

First Edition published by Amber Quill Press/Amber Allure, 2011.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have L. Rockwood here today to talk about his latest release from Dreamspinner Press, Defiant Revival, world building, writing and much more.  Welcome to STRW, L, tell about about Defiant Revival’s and yourself as a author:

defiantrevival_fbprofile_optizimedforfeed

I was able to come up with my own universe and a whole new humanoid species, but for some reason I struggle writing about myself. It’s as if my creativity tap just gets turned off when I go to write about writing. That is… without a prompt! I love answering questions and so I will do my best to hit them all.

Q: Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

A: Death and rebirth are huge for me, not only in this series but also in my works in progress. I have always been the macabre sort, but it’s more than that. In my teens and young twenties I lived through numerous near death experiences, a good half of them my own fault. Surviving these are not what I count as my rebirth, however. It was when I picked myself, chose to live and started to embrace all of myself. Oh, and Dragon Ball Z definitely showed me heroes never truly die.

Q: Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And  why?

A: Totally pants. I have tried outlining stuff in the other story I’m working on, but it just doesn’t flow for me that way. I will write whole chapters in my head during long car rides, though.

Q: Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?

A: I wrote fantasy, but I don’t think it was the genre that drew me. I feel like the story drew me to that genre, instead. I don’t exactly know which is my favorite, yet, but it has to be both dark and funny.

Q: If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?

A: I have kind of fought within myself about my portrayal of Loretta. After finally presenting as male and now knowing the profound pain, firsthand, of having to act like or identify as the name and sex assigned to me at birth because of what my legal records say, I can hardly stomach making her shed her identity. But then I remind myself she is in a different universe where no one knows what being trans is, nor is there a word or any protections for it. I also see her as selfless and caring enough to sacrifice herself for her friends, but I don’t know if her doing it so nonchalantly is really the best portrayal. I no longer have to treat her in a sexually fluid way in the third book, at least, and Ari is no more. Yay!

Q: Can a author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

A: Of course! My favorite is hands down Micah. Why? He is actually loosely based on my wife! There isn’t too much direct correlation (besides them both being tiny and cute), but the way he and Billiam love each other is completely inspired by our own relationship.

Q: If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

A: Kurt Vonnegut is my all time favorite, especially Slapstick, so I’d want his catalogue. I’d need some manga too, so I pick Kuroshitsuji. I’d have to get pigeon mailed the new chapters though.

Q: How early in your life did you begin writing?

A: Kindergarten maybe? I know I won a school writing contest in second grade for my short story Gumbelina. It was a retelling of Thumbalina except she was made of gum and got eaten by a frog.

Q:Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

A: My mom read me Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs so much that I memorized it. I could repeat it word for word before I was even able to read it. I was hitting the chapter books right outside of kindergarten though.

Q: What question would you ask yourself here?

A: Why have you qnot written any unicorns into your series yet? What is wrong with you!?

Q: If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be?

A: The Bear and the Princess

About Defiant Revival

To free the kingdom from the depravity of Cardinal Aldrious, Prince Micah Helvendeere must take his rightful place as ruler.

Unfortunately, the prince has been dead for a year.

Billiam Grimhart, former page to the prince, knows Micah’s assumption of the throne is the last chance to purge Casperland of the cardinal’s corruption. And for that to happen, the prince must be revived. Only one person stands a chance of achieving the nearly impossible: exiled enchantress Shemmy DuBois, a raunchy bog witch with an affinity for corpses and a heart of gold. Billiam sets out to coax Shemmy to their cause, despite what wading through piles of bodies will do to his favorite shoes.

If he can accomplish it, Billiam might finally get to consummate his love for the prince—something Shemmy is keen to witness. But first, they’ll need to steal Micah’s body, brave a land inhabited by vicious faeries, and accept the help of accomplices as vile and perverse as their enemies. They might be far from typical heroes, but sometimes those are the only people who can get the job done.

If you like dark and edgy high-concept fantasy that’s not for those with delicate sensibilities, join Billiam, Shemmy, and their Faelock allies as they stage their revolution.

About L. Rockwood

L. Rockwood is survived by his artist wife, Rae, and their three adorable but stupid cats. He is also quite alive however terribly morbid. It is thanks to this macabre fascination (and likely his Scorpio moon) that death and rebirth is the central focus of all his works. L. definitely has a lighter side, usually manifesting in hot pink or glitter, as he is just as obsessed with all things kawaii.

L. is an out and proud pansexual, transgender man. He draws from his own experiences, striving to celebrate the various and beautiful ways love and sexuality can manifest through his characters. His time is split between the Central and Lost Coasts of California. He has yet to spot his favorite animal, the unicorn, in his travels, but he will never give up hope.

  • Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

Hank Fielder: Hi everyone!  I’m privileged to be talking to you today about my new book, called “Make Someone Happy.” Inspiration is a great topic to start out with. I love that inspiration can be drawn from anywhere — from memories, personal experiences, from other stories, from dreams, from places and journeys.  Even from thin air.

For my new novella, called “Make Someone Happy,” I started getting the idea based on a place: a modest little day spa.  A friend gave me a gift certificate for a massage.  I was excited and nervous at the same time.  After all, someone you don’t know is rubbing you all over, in a good way!  It’s not sexual, but it’s pretty intimate.

I started thinking, what if two massage therapists working together started to feel more than simple friendship for one another?  What if one was experienced and self-assured? That’s Andre.  What if the other guy was new to the job, not as good at it yet — and secretly falling hard for his friend and co-worker?   This is Joe, the main character. I decided it would be fun to throw in a little magic and help our inexperienced hero Joe with a magic wish: to have a magic touch.  The massage he gives Andre leads them both on a journey of intimacy, passion and desire — and trouble.

Magic can lead to unforeseen consequences, in love and in fortune.  At the center of the story is the love shared between Joe and Andre, and the test of true love is the story’s main conflict.

  • Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?

HF: It’s great that MM romance offers a chance to explore so many different genres.  I’d always wanted to write an urban fantasy.  I knew I wanted to try a light touch in a fantasy story of genuine passion, with real stakes involved.

In “Make Someone Happy,” Joe is skeptical about magic; he’s never thought about it much.  But when a beautiful “good” witch, who happens to be giving up white magic because of its unforeseen consequences, offers Joe a single wish, he plays along.  He’s done the witch a great favor — he rescued her kitten, named Angel. We’re off and running.

I’ve tried to keep the story urban, contemporary and real, with real life problems.  And that’s what I love about urban fantasy.  If the story works, it opens our eyes to the “real” magic all around us.  The miracles of falling in love, of crisp autumn nights, of the deep bonds we can share with another person — that puts the sparkle in your day.  Or put another way, playing with the urban fantasy genre is simply another way of enjoying the fun of story itself, of entering a magical world.

  • Can an author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

HF: I think so, yes.  Even baddies can be reader favorites, right?  Who doesn’t “like” Dracula, for example?  So timelessly wrought, so impeccably evil.  Or the Wicked Witch of the West.  We don’t want her to win, but we have a blast rooting against a worthy antagonist.

But I like my good guys best.  I can’t help but like Joe Wells, the hero of “Make Someone Happy.”  Andre is gorgeous and kind, but Joe is such an everyday guy, keeping his spirits up even when he thinks he’s going to lose his job; even when he wonders how he’s going to win the love of Andre.  I relate to his struggles, and his joys.

Nick Davanger from my novel “Emerald Idol” is another favorite of mine.  (Well, you asked!)  He faces up to his demons and triumphs.

  • How early in your life did you begin writing?

HF: I used to draw heaps of primitive little comic strips when I was a kid.  I actually hear of lots of adult authors who started this way.  I tried to write seriously when I was in school and I just kept at it.  I’m always reading and can barely remember when I wasn’t.  Anyone reading this knows the love of which I speak.

  • Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

HF: We always had a lot of books and I took to fairy tales like an ugly duckling to water.  Hans Christian Andersen, Roald Dahl and Charles Dickens wrote the kinds of stories I and millions of others remember so fondly.  I see no reason to stop reading them now or ever, even if I’m lucky and live to be 100.  Who could forget James and his giant peach, or the Snow Queen, or the Little Match Girl?  These storytellers are the giants I look up to.

  • Anything else you’d like to say about “Make Someone Happy”?

Just that I hope readers will enjoy it and find a little magic in a simple urban tale.  And that they laugh at the funny parts!

About Make Someone Happy

Massage therapist Joe Wells is in a little over his head with his first job at the posh Magic Touch Sports Spa. He’s also secretly falling for his friendly, sexy coworker, the top-notch masseur Andre Swift.  All the clients clamor for Andre, and so far none have taken to Joe.

On the verge of being fired, Joe saves the life of a mysterious kitten belonging to a white witch, who grants him a wish: a magic touch that could save his job and maybe even win him Andre’s love and respect. As Joe’s stock at the spa rises to crazy and barely manageable levels of success, demand for Andre’s services drops off. Will Joe lose Andre to an out-of-control spell?  Or worse—Andre’s love might prove to be only a result of the magic, just like Joe’s sudden talent.

On Fire (States of Love) by Alicia Nordwell

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Alicia Nordwell here today, sharing her latest release, On Fire, and talking about writing location, specifically that of Washington from On Fire. Welcome, Alicia.

Why Choosing Your Setting is Important

on-fire-bachelor-button-setting-post

This goes against the grain for me, unless an author is picking a place they know very well. If you don’t or aren’t willing to take the time to really learn about your chosen location? Don’t do it! You’ll upset the readers who do know the area well, and your details won’t be nearly as rich. Your best bet is always to do either 1) Make Believe Town, USA or 2) Out of This World. My favorite is Out of This World, of course, since I love to write sci-fi. But what happens when I’m writing contemporary, urban fantasy, or contemporary-paranormal stories? That’s when I dust off my generalities. We’ve all read those books which could be any city, any town, even yours. It makes it very easy to play fast and loose with your setting.

But the challenge with On Fire was exactly the opposite. In this story, my goal was to bring Washington to life for the readers, so I did what I’ve seldom done before. I showed you ‘home’. Have I been everywhere the characters have? No. But many of the locations I shared are ones I’ve been. Mt. Adams dominated the area I grew up as the prime camping destination. Campgrounds? Oh no! My family does exactly what Scottie did… we’re out in the middle of the wilderness. We do bring a lot of creature comforts—no tarp for a tent and hot dogs on a stick for us—but we’re pretty far out there. Nothing beats walking out of camp to hike around, picking huckleberries for pancakes or playing in the freezing cold creeks. My camera gets a real workout each trip.

Everyone knows wilderness abounds in Washington, but most people think of that landscape. Evergreens, pine trees, mountains, and rain. Well, we have that, but I also grew up on the desert side. That’s right, we have a desert side. My mom visited in June for the first time and her first question was, “I thought Washington was green.” Well, it is, but it isn’t. Summer on that side of the state is all about tall, yellow grasses and spare flowers like Bachelor Buttons—which just so happens to be today’s picture. I took it up the Columbia River Gorge, just behind my dad’s place.

I could go on and on about the natural areas I love and wanted to share in On Fire, but I had to also include the wonderful cities we have here. We’re… eclectic. You can see all sorts of people here, from the man in a business suit while wearing a bunny stocking cap coming out of the Thai restaurant at noon on a Tuesday to grunge is “normal”. Everyone knows about Starbucks and Pike’s Place Market, but did you know about Marsh’s Free Museum, home of Jake the Alligator Man? No? Well make sure you read On Fire, so you can visit some of my favorite places with Scottie and Jax. I’m considering another story set in Washington, so let me know what areas you’d like to visit, or have visited and would love to see featured.

Blurb

Nothing beats getting out of the concrete jungle and into the quiet of the forest. Website designer Scottie Ness is taking a well-deserved vacation from the grindstone, and he plans to spend it in the solitude of Washington’s Gifford Pinchot National Forest around Mt. Adams. He’s prepared for everything—except the lightning storm that traps him in a wildfire.

The firefighter who rescues him sustains serious injuries and ends up in the hospital. Jax Quintero might be abrasive, but the guy saved his life, and Scottie wants to thank him. As they spend time together during Jax’s recovery and exploring the state’s landmarks when he’s released from the hospital, Scottie discovers there’s more to Jax than a smart-ass adrenaline junkie. Jax reassesses his opinion of Scottie as an arrogant city boy who has no business in the mountains. Though Jax’s wounds prevent them from taking things as far as they’d like for a while, they can’t deny the heat building between them—and this is one fire they don’t want to put out.

Excerpt

Chapter One

“WHAT EXOTIC tropical locale are you going to spend your vacation drunk in?” Carter leaned back in his chair so he could see into Scottie’s cubicle. He smirked. “Or are you hitting the casinos in Vegas to make your fortune and leave all of us to toil away in the trenches alone?”

“Neither. Hiking and camping in the Gifford Pinchot around Mt. Adams.” Scottie adjusted a line of code, and the website header widened. “I’m all set to go in the morning.”

“Seriously? You have a week off in August, and you’re going to waste it trudging through the dirt and pine trees when you could be lounging on the beach somewhere?” Carter shook his head. “Wouldn’t catch me doing that. Aren’t there bears and cougars up there?”

Scottie shrugged one shoulder. “I might see a bear, if I’m lucky. Cougars are actually pretty shy.”

“You want to see a bear?”

“It’d make a great picture.” The website he was working on needed to be visually appealing on both computers and mobile devices, and he was having a hard time focusing. “It’s Friday. Don’t you have some reason to duck out and start the weekend early?”

“Nope. Miranda, Tark, and I are all going out for happy hour at Corrigan’s, but not until six. Don’t try to change the subject. You know you can take pictures at the beach, right? White sand, crystal blue water, and palm trees swaying in front of the setting sun.”

“Dime a dozen. I like living in Washington because we have so many places where I can take beautiful nature photos. Coastline, rivers, lakes, mountains, even the desert, all within a few hours’ drive. Besides, I’m still paying off my student loans. I don’t have money for expensive vacations.”

“Two words. Credit cards.”

Of course. Carter wore name-brand shoes with his fancy suits and never brought a lunch, preferring to order takeout. He’d graduated a year before Scottie, so it wasn’t like he made that much more money. “One word. Stupid.”

Carter rolled his eyes. “Whatever, man. When I take my week off next month, I’m going to Hawaii. Hotel on the beach, coconut drinks, and chicks in bikinis. Any women you come across in the campground will probably be covered in pitch and pine needles.”

“I’m not going to stay in the campgrounds. I’m hiking and camping off the trails, and for the most part, I won’t see any people at all.”

A look of horror crossed Carter’s face. “Seriously?”

He nodded. “I used to go camping with my family all the time growing up. We’d hike, fish, roast hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire. It’s peaceful.”

“Whatever, man. When you get munched on by a bear, can I get your chair?”

It was Scottie’s turn to roll his eyes. “I’m not going to get eaten by a bear, and your chair is the same as mine. Why would you want it?”

“I spilled fish sauce on mine earlier this week, and now it smells funny.”

“Well you can’t have my chair, and I’ll notice if there’s a fish funk on mine when I get back, so don’t even try to switch them. Don’t you have a project to finish? I have to get this done before I leave.”

“Fine, fine.” Carter rolled back to his desk. “Have fun communing with wildlife.”

SCOTTIE ROLLED up his backpacking tent with an extra tarp and fastened it to the bottom of his pack. His sleeping bag, a change of clothes, survival kit, portable stove, water filter, and food fit inside. The rest of his camping gear was piled along the wall, taking up most of the living room floor in his postage stamp of an apartment. He plopped down on the couch with a beer and opened his laptop.

Using a red highlighter, he outlined the trails he planned to take and marked his base camp as well as his possible overnight camping sites before printing out two copies. Picking up a pen, Scottie scribbled his full name, the dates of his trip, and what kind of vehicle he was driving on the back of one map. He’d drop it off at the ranger station before he stopped in Trout Lake for some sandwiches. No idea what they did to make them taste so great, but they were way better than anything he could make. He’d have to stop by the ATM on the way out of Vancouver to pick up some cash.

Now that he had all the nitty-gritty survival stuff out of the way, he had to get his photography equipment in order. Scottie didn’t spend much money on himself, but he had a nice Canon camera, lenses, a flexible tripod for his hiking pack, and a bigger telescoping tripod in its own bag. Using a polishing cloth from his cleaning kit, Scottie went over every piece of glass in his camera bag, making sure all the lenses and filters were spotless. Photography might be just a hobby, but he took pride in getting that one shot that made all the hard work worth it.

He’d finished his beer by the time he had the last memory card and battery stowed, and he waffled on what he wanted to do. He’d been up since six, worked a full day, and finished getting all his camping gear ready to load in the morning, but he wasn’t tired enough to go to bed. The weather report he checked promised sunny days and clear nights—though it wouldn’t be nearly as warm around Mt. Adams as it would be in Portland.

Author Bio

The number one question folks ask Alicia when she shares she’s a MM romance author: “Why gay fiction? Why write men when you’re a woman?” and her answer is: “Why the hell not!” Alicia Nordwell is one of those not so rare creatures, a reader turned writer. Striving to find an interesting story one day, she decided to write what she wanted instead. Then the voices started… Yep, not only does she talk about herself in the third person for bios, she has voices in her head constantly clamoring to get out. Fortunately, with the encouragement of her family and friends, she decided for her own sanity to keep writing.

Now you can find her stories both free and e-published. When she’s not on the computer typing away, she’s a wife and a mom of two in the dreary, yet ideal for her redhead complexion, Pacific Northwest. Except for when she disappears into one of the many worlds in her head, of course! She can also be found quite often at her blog, where she has a lot of free fiction for readers to enjoy or working hard, or maybe hardly working, as an admin on GayAuthors.org under her online nickname, Cia.
