Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Erica Kudisch here today talking about her latest novel, Don’t Feed the Trolls! Welcome, Erica!

📚

Hey nerds! Erica Kudisch here promoting my novel DON’T FEED THE TROLLS, a genderqueer romp through internet drama. And if you keep up with the blog tour and its bonus DLC, there’s a $50 prize package achievement for you to unlock. Have fun!

Process Meme

In the bygone days of LiveJournal, I used to fill out character questionnaires for my favorite fanfiction muses. I’ve carried over some parts of the process to my original work, and have a few go-to memes that help me stay on track when I’m developing my main and supporting characters. And one of my favorites that I designed is this version of the Physical Description questionnaire. It was specifically created to counter the height/width/measurements memes that were already out there, which are sometimes really limiting and unhelpful.

I’ve included the template here, for all you writers and readers who think it might help with your own project–and at a future stop on this tour, I’ll use it to introduce the Three Musketqueers, the central characters of DON’T FEED THE TROLLS. Happy writing!

Character Name:

Without giving precise measurements, how would you describe or draw this character’s height and build?

How does this character’s shape compare to other members of the cast? Can he share shoes or clothes with anyone? Does she get mistaken for any other characters when the lights are low? What kind of hiding places can zie share with hir comrades?

How would you describe or draw this character’s coloration?

How does this character’s coloration compare to other members of the cast? Are there any strong familial resemblances? Species differences?

How about your character’s style? Haircuts, clothes, grooming habits, facial hair: do these change over the course of your story?

What does the rest of your cast think of this character’s style? Swoon-worthy, cringe-worthy, or somewhere in between? Are there any budding makeover artists in the house?

What actors, living or dead, past or present, could play this character in the live-action version of your story? What, if anything, would they have to change about themselves to satisfy your artistic vision?

What are your favorite details about this character’s appearance?

About Don’t Feed the Trolls

Gaming while female is enough to incur the wrath of the dude-bros, and they’ve come for me. Instead of fighting back, I’ve created an alternate account. Male name, male pronouns. And I’ve met this girl. I’ve always liked girls, and Laura’s adorable and smart and never gives up, and she likes me back. Or rather, she likes the man I’m pretending to be. But I can’t tell her I’m a woman without the mob coming after her too.

And besides: I might not be a woman, not really.

The truth is, I don’t know what I am anymore. I’ve spent my whole life being told how I’m supposed to act and what I’m supposed to be, but none of it feels right. And my lie is starting to feel truer than anything I’ve ever been.

There’s a convention coming up, but the closer it gets, the more I have to choose: lie or fight. But if I don’t stand my ground as a girl, am I letting the haters win?

Then again, those aren’t the only two ways to live.

About Angels of Istanbul

Wallachian nobleman Radu is recently arrived in Bucharest with his vampire parents. Welcomed as an eligible bachelor, he’s introduced to the enchantress Ecaterina, whose salon is Bucharest’s centre of magical expertise.

But when Ecaterina’s brother dies of a mysterious new plague, it’s clear to Radu that his parents have not been idle. Soon Bucharest is in the grip of an undead epidemic—a less than ideal time for Ottoman Sultan Mahmud, Wallachia’s overlord, to call Bucharest’s nobility to assemble their armies in Istanbul for a holy war against Britain.

The Wallachians have long resented their Ottoman overlords, so Radu seizes the chance to eliminate them while also ridding Bucharest of the undead: he leads an army of vampires to Istanbul and sets them to feed on the Turks.

As Radu’s demons gut the city of Istanbul, their plans become horribly clear. This is only the start. With the Ottoman armies under their control, the undead are poised to suck the life out of the whole world. Radu, his lover Frank, and Ecaterina are appalled at what they’ve unleashed. But they may be too late to stop it.

About Growing Pains

Gigi Rosenberg is living his best life: performances in the big city, side gigs at a dance company, a successful drag act, and the boy of his childhood dreams who now adores him. Even if the boyfriend part isn’t the sparkly ride of passion he expected it to be, life is sweet. So when his sister’s wedding calls him back to his hometown, he sees an opportunity to show the hicks from his past how wrong they were about him. Only, his boyfriend isn’t quite on board.

Brock Stubbs left their hometown and his parents behind for a reason, and the prospect of facing them again is terrifying. He swore he’d never go back, but Gigi has made it clear refusal isn’t an option, and Brock will do nearly anything for him. There’s just one deal-breaker of a problem: Brock promised Gigi he was out to everyone, including his parents. He lied.

It’s magical to run into the sunset together, but staying the course takes work. For Gigi and Brock, going home feels like the finale of a long, disappointing year. Sometimes love isn’t all you need.

About Toronto Connections

The winters might be cold, but hearts are warm in Toronto. Canada’s largest city is home to a big lake, a big tower, and a big queer community. People here are trying to get by like everyone else: pay the bills, deal with life in the city, and maybe find some happiness along the way with someone who’s sweeter than maple candy and more constant than a Canadian’s love for Timmie’s coffee.

For some, falling in love is a real challenge. For others, falling is the easy part—it’s the happy ever after that proves a little more difficult. But in the end, love is worth every complication, misunderstanding, and occasional swear word.

This title is part of the Toronto Connections universe.

As Frank recovers from his assault, Radu finds himself falling for the young man. But loving Frank and not wanting to lose him leaves Radu vulnerable to his demons’ demands. About Darkness, part 3 in the Common Law series

A murdered prostitute. An obvious suspect. Clear evidence. For once, Jericho Crewe has a straightforward crime to investigate, and Wade Granger isn’t involved.

It all seems so simple, but Jericho’s instincts won’t let him rest. As he investigates, he finds troubling suggestions that the murder is a part of something larger and more sinister. But working within the boundaries of the law may keep him from finding the truth. If Jericho doesn’t break the rules, an innocent man may rot in jail while a killer remains free to strike again.

Inevitably, it all comes back to Wade. Because who else knows as much about breaking rules? And who else knows Jericho the way Wade does—not wisely, but far, far too well?

About Kate Sherwood

Kate Sherwood started writing about the same time she got back on a horse after almost twenty years away from riding. She’d like to think she was too young for it to be a midlife crisis, but apparently she was ready for some changes!

Kate grew up near Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and went to school in Montreal, then Vancouver. But for the last decade or so she’s been a country girl. Sure, she misses some of the conveniences of the city, but living close to nature makes up for those lacks. She’s living in Ontario’s “cottage country”–other people save up their time and come to spend their vacations in her neighborhood, but she gets to live there all year round!

Since her first book was published in 2010, she’s kept herself busy with novels, novellas, and short stories in almost all the sub-genres of m/m romance. Contemporary, suspense, scifi or fantasy–the settings are just the backdrop for her characters to answer the important questions. How much can they share, and what do they need to keep? Can they bring themselves to trust someone, after being disappointed so many times? Are they brave enough to take a chance on love?

Kate’s books balance drama with humor, angst with optimism. They feature strong, damaged men who fight themselves harder than they fight anyone else. And, wherever possible, there are animals: horses, dogs, cats ferrets, squirrels… sometimes it’s easier to bond with a non-human, and most of Kate’s men need all the help they can get.

After five years of writing, Kate is still learning, still stretching herself, and still enjoying what she does. She’s looking forward to sharing a lot more stories in the future.

Songs- A Partial Soundtrack for Half

I listen to a lot of music while I’m writing.  It’s the thing that inspires me and decides where a book will go and how it will feel.  Half was no exception—I had a massive playlist for it, while I was writing and revising.  So, for your listening pleasure (hopefully!) here are five of my favorite songs from that playlist.

Nara by alt-J: alt-J’s album This Is All Yours was one of four albums I listened to on repeat while writing this book, and it’s the one I love the most.  And this song embodies why, for me.  It destroys me in the best way.  It’s about love and finding someone to love, and loss, and fear, and heartache, and joy.  I hope a little bit of that snuck into Half.

Say Goodbye by Beck-  I listened to Morning Phase nonstop during my last big rewrite of this book.  It’s a quiet album that packs a punch.  Say Goodbye is my favorite song off it—it’s simple but it does something to my heart.  I wanted to carry that over into Half.

Trembling Hands by The Temper Trap: If the book has a theme song, it’s this.  I actually wanted to call the book Trembling Hands at one point—thankfully I didn’t keep that idea.  I don’t always pay a ton of attention to lyrics while I’m writing, but these struck me so much.  Fundamentally, the song is about something completely different than Half.  But the feelings of being lonely and scared and unsure stuck with me.  I also love the dynamics, the passion in the vocals, and the delicate verses.

Heavenfaced by The National:  The National’s album Trouble Will Find me was another one I had on repeat while writing Half.  The whole album has a sort of dreamy quality to the music and lyrics, and I could get really lost in it.  But it’s solid, too, and it has a lot of depth.  Heavenfaced is one of my favorite songs off it.  It’s basically, for me, about life and death, and living as best you can.  Whenever I hear the words, “No one’s careful all the time,” I think about Half’s main character, Luca.

Heavenly Father by Bon Iver:  I think I’ve listened to this song a million times, and it never gets old.  I’m not sure why I wanted to listen to it so much while I was writing this book.  Lyrically, it doesn’t really fit.  But I do go into family relationships in Half—the relationship Luca has with his sister, and the relationship he has with his father—the confusion of family ties, and what to feel about people who are supposed to love you.  And in that way, it does sort of fit.

About Half

Living between worlds has never been comfortable, but it’s where I’ve always fit: between human and fey, illness and health, magic and reality.

I’ve spent the last six years looking for a cure for the nameless sickness eating me up. If I believed there was one out there, I would keep searching. But there isn’t, so I’ve come back home, where my past and present tangle. Come home to live . . . and to die.

But my father insists I meet Kin. He’s a healer, and determined to help, even though I’m not so hopeful anymore. But Kin isn’t what I expected, in any way. He sees me, not my illness. He reminds me of what it’s like to be alive. And I can’t help falling for him, even though I know it isn’t fair to either of us.

Kin thinks he has the cure I’ve been looking for, but it’s a cure that will change everything: me, my life, my heart. If I refuse, I could lose Kin. But if I take it, I might lose myself.

About Embers

Small town—big problems. Jericho Crewe is back in Mosely, Montana, trying to deal with police corruption, interfering feds, his newly discovered family members, and, of course, Wade Granger.

He doesn’t really need a biker war on top of it all, but as the bodies start to pile up, it becomes pretty clear that’s what he’s got. Not only that, but Wade’s involved somehow, and as soon as Wade is a part of something, things that seemed clear become cloudy.

With the feds breathing down his neck, Jericho has to find his way through Wade’s maze of half truths and manipulations. It would all be so much easier if Jericho could think straight in the other man’s presence. So much easier if their passionate past could be forgotten, and if he could be sure he’s strong enough to resist the temptation of a passionate present.

Kit is always trying to find balance between working full-time, revisiting or writing books every night, and modeling badass behavior to her two boys. Sometimes the lure of Tumblr interferes with all of that balancing. She’s just old enough to still be utterly enchanted by animated gifs.

A single mom and aspiring yogi, Kit is open about her struggles with anxiety and the importance of self-care. She also advocates for neurodiversity and acceptance of those on the autism spectrum. Few things get her as riled up as bisexual erasure.

Though she lives in the South, Kit is a NYC girl at heart, and makes a point of traveling to the city as often as she can to catch a few shows and eat as much ramen as humanly possible.

She reads avidly, and gravitates toward historical queer romance and young adult fantasy, especially when the stakes are high. She’s a fan of awkward first dates unless she’s participating in them, and is outspoken about embracing kink and sex positivity.
