A Paul B Review: The Promise (Sirius Wolves #4) by Victoria Sue

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

the-promise-by-victoria-sueMarcus Flint enjoys his job as the US government’s Lupine Liaison Officer.  He has been working closely with Blaze, the Supreme Alpha werewolf and his mates to deal with the Winter Circle terrorist organization that is trying to keep weres and humans apart.  He admires some the characteristics of his werewolf friends like their lifetime mating and the fact that they are very tactile.  Being a double amputee from the last war, Marcus believes that he will never have that, as his former lover Justin rejected him after he came home from overseas.

Kellan believes he is lupus non gratis around his pack. He was forced to help the psychopath Michael with his schemes because his mate was being threatened.  Most of the wolves of the Jefferson pack cannot forgive him.  Only those of Orion’s Circle seem to understand the pressure he was under to protect his mate.  When it is revealed that his mate is Marcus, the human, most wolves do not believe that it is possible.

Ricoh meanwhile is having problems with his mates.  Hunter, the Jefferson pack alpha, continues to ignore him.  Nate is still missing after fleeing when his life is spared for killing Darric.  And as he begins to be around Marcus, he is developing feeling for that man too.  He does not understand how this could be as he already has his mates, or so he thought.  When Nate shows up with an anti-werewolf minister looking thin and tired, the group knows that something is terribly wrong.  As the group plans a rescue, Hunter goes and tries to talk to Nate, making him shut down further.  The group must now recalculate their plans to save Nate while somehow not alienate the human population any further than the anti-were agitators have already done.

This fourth book in the Sirius Wolves series continues the integration of humans and werewolves that started in the previous books.  Orion’s Circle (Aden, Blaze, Conner, and Darric) take more of supporting roles as Marcus, Ricoh, Nate, and Kellan drive this story.  We also begin to see that not all wolves are behind the ruling council.  Nate is obviously been tortured to the point where he is suffering a bit of Stockholm syndrome.  Marcus thinks no one can care for him because of his physical appearance.  Ricoh believes that both of his mates of basically rejected him while Kellan has been rejected by his own pack for the most part.  The ending of the book takes a unique twist in the furthering of the goals of Orion’s Circle.  As usual, I cannot wait to read the next in the series.

The cover by E Connors is fairly standard for the series.  A well built shirtless man in jeans is set in front of a starry night sky.  However, I’m not sure which character he is suppose to be though.

Broken Circle (Sirius Wolves #2)

A PaulB Review: Orion’s Circle (Sirius Wolves # 1) by Victoria Sue

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

orions-circle-by-victoria-sueAden is being hunted.  As an omega werewolf, he is there for the amusement of the pack.  Things are so bad for Aden he wishes for death sometimes.  As he is corned by Alpha Richard and his pack mates, a new voice orders them to leave Aden alone.  The man says that Aden is not in danger anymore.  When Richard stakes his claim for Aden and sends some of his wolves after him, five of his pack mates end up dead.  The other wolves begin to retreat and Richard admits defeat, at least for now.  Aden then promptly passes out from the starvation and torture that he has endured.

Aden’s three saviors are Blaze, Connor and Darric.  Born many centuries before, they were chosen by Sirius to lead the werewolves into a new ear.  However, in order to complete their mission, the Alpha Triumvirate must find their omega mate.  As the trio is protecting Aden, they all agree that they have found their man.  Now they must make sure that Aden is safe from his old pack.

While dealing with the problems posed by Aden’s pack, the three men are in delicate negotiations with the United States government about bringing the existence of werewolves to the public and helping the military.  This is the first step in bringing peace to the world, what the trio, now quartet have been charged to do.  However, Richard is not finished with Aden yet.  His plans, along with his pack, will force the Alpha trio to divide their attention in order to get their mate back.

This is a great start to the series by Victoria Sue.  The idea of a trio of alphas running their own pack and ultimately the greater werewolf world is unusual.  Each alpha has a unique ability that allows them to work together effectively after hundreds of years.  They were born for this and are relieved that they have finally found their missing mate and will do everything to protect him.  Sirius also does what she can in order to help them get the job done but is limited according to the rules of the gods.  Meanwhile, Aden’s world gets turned upside down when he finds out that omegas should not be treated as he has been.  Instead of being abused as a plaything, he is cherished by his three lovers.  Aden’s unique ability will change the dynamic of this new forms family.  With an enemy on the loose, it will take all they have to protect it.

The cover art by E Connors has a well-built man in a muscle shirt and jeans in front of a cloudy night sky.  It is a good representation for Blaze.

A Paul B Review: Bear In Mind (The Bears of Falcon’s Ridge #2) by Susan E. Scott

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Bear In MindGabe Falcon has been seeing Blake whenever his art work took him into Atlanta.  He first met Blake five months ago.  Shortly before their first date, Gabe found out that a woman he had been seeing in Savannah was pregnant with his child.  As Gabe has been a love them and leave them type of guy, this changed the equation for Gabe.  Karen, the woman from Savannah, would not agree to marry him, nor did she want to keep the baby.  Gabe hoped he could convince Karen to give him the baby to raise.  But this possibly puts an end to any future for his relationship with Blake as he states that he did not want to have kids someday.

Blake works at an art gallery in Atlanta.  Through his job, he meets Gabe, a sexy Native American artist.  While he agrees to become friends with benefits with Gabe for whenever he was in town on business, lately Blake has wanted to take the relationship to the next level.  He fears that if informs Gabe of his decision that he will lose Gabe.  When he doesn’t hear from Gabe in a while, Blake figures that the relationship, such as it is, is dying a natural death.  After being laid off at his art gallery, Blake decides to pay his friend Connor and Conner’s new boyfriend Falcon a visit.

When Blake arrives at Connor’s place for his visit, he can’t help but notice the resemblance Falcon bares to his Gabe.  When he learns that Falcon is actually his last name, it confirms that the two are brothers and in fact twins.  Blake then learns that Gabe is in Savannah for the birth of his own twins.  Blake is sure he does not want to be a home wrecker and wonders where he fits into Gabe’s new life.  He will certainly be busy with the new additions along with possibly their mother, leaving him alone.  Is there any hope for a life with Gabe and his kids?

This is the second book in the Bears of Falcon’s Ridge series.  I missed out on the first one but that did not detract much from the story.  (The first book was the story of Connor and Falcon.)  In this book, Gabe and Falcon being bear shifters is treated almost like they had brown eyes or were Native American, just another part of their being.  The only shifting that took place happened off page.

Both men seem to want their relationship to develop further but are both afraid but telling the other of their desire that they will lose them.  Only after the subtle help of Connor after Gabe brings the babies home do the men come to realize that they both want the same thing.  I plan on catching up with the first book and look forward to others in the series.

The cover by Eden Connor fits the character of Gabe well.  A shirtless Native American male with long dark hair is standing in front of a forest scene.  It is just how I would picture Gabe as he was described.

A Paul B Review: The Werewolf Tutor (Shreds #1) by Jade Astor

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The Werewolf TutorGarth Merrick and his two brothers are opening a new shifter friendly bar in Maine.  To say that Garth is not made to be a bartender is an understatement.  The number of broken glasses is a testament to that.  One day their family attorney shows up with a proposition.  One of his friends, a wolf shifter, has a son who is having a difficult time shifting.  Would one of the brothers be willing to tutor the young shifter the proper techniques to shifting?  Garth sees this as an opportunity to avoid broken glass and spend some time in rural Maine where his cougar can roam the country estate.

Braiden Hemmings is a young werewolf shifter who is used to getting his own way.  His father does not like the fact that he is hanging out with members of the other pack that lives in town, as the two packs have had bad blood for years.  Having to go away for business, Braiden’s father decides to hire someone to supposedly help him learn to shift.  Braiden knows the real reason is that his father just wants someone to keep an eye on him with he’s out of town.  Braiden decides to act like the brat that his father thinks he is and seduce the babysitter and run him out of town.  When he catches sight of the gorgeous man brought in, Braiden decides that maybe he shouldn’t run him off so fast.

While the attraction between the two is obvious, Garth resists temptation because he Is being paid to teach this young man.  However, the young men of the rival pack decide to make Braden do their bidding, ordering him to meet them.  Garth warns Braiden about possible trouble.  When Braiden does not show, the pack comes searching for them.  The tutor and student must defend themselves against the invaders if they want to continue their new romance.

This is the first book in the new Shreds series.  I wanted to like the book more but something seemed to fall short for me.  I am not sure if it is the fact that Garth up and leaves his brothers behind as they start a new business or the romance between the two main characters did not click as I thought it should have.  Despite this, I do look forward to the stories of Garth’s brothers.  The idea of a shifter bar provides a good setting for future stories.

The cover by E Connors has our two men in front of a forest setting.  One is shirtless while the other has a zipper cropped sweatshirt on.  It is a decent if generic cover for the book.

The Werewolf Tutor (Shreds #1)

A Jeri Review: The Wicked West Collection (Vol 1) by Shannon West

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

The Wicked West CollectionHot guy on the cover? Sure! Anything to draw your eye, but it was rather generic. Four short stories by one author. And when I say short- I mean short. They all touched on a different “theme” if you will, and while they were ok, the fluff factor is high.

Getting Plugged

This was by far the most out there of the stories. Charlie, while experimenting, gets himself in a predicament and has to call out sick to work. His boss, Trevor, rushes to his aid. Apparently, they had never really spoken before but Trevor  runs to his house to help him out. What could, and should, be a seriously embarrassing situation turns into Trevor alluding to the fact that he is a dom and Charlie is a sub just waiting to happen. Like I said, it was pretty far out there and besides the self love, there was no sex in this short.

Getting Played

I think this was the most promising of the four stories. Twinky office guy at a police station has to take self defense classes ordered by his boss. The super hot detective Zach has been eyeing just happens to be the teacher. And when Zach mouths off, Cole decides to teach him a lesson.

What follows are a series of pretty hot role playing scenarios between the two. The most entertaining and hottest of the 4 stories by far.

Getting Picked

The trope we all tend to fall for- friends to lovers. In this story we have another Cole, a vet returning from war damaged but not broken. His best friend, the seemingly straight Ben, rushes to see him in the hospital.

After being released from the hospital, Cole and Ben kind of dance around their attraction to each other. Cole is out and proud and has loved Ben for as long as he could remember. But every time something happens between them, Ben freaks out. So Cole gives him an ultimatum.

This was the storiest (yes, I made that word up) of the stories. While it is a tried and true trope, I liked that the out gay guy was the one who served in the military, leaving the “straight” best friend home. I actually really liked the story of how they became friends in kindergarten. I would love for this one to be expanded on as a full novel.

Getting Pierced

This one plays more on the Dom/sub. Ross loses a bet and has to get pierced. But not his ears. And he said not to his belly button and nipples. So that leaves…..

And then he runs into his boss at the bar. His hot boss. We get a bit of back story on Ross and Sloane, which was nice and helped the rest of the story flow. Sloane takes control of the situation, and Ross, by basically claiming him there and then.

There is quite an exploration of the beginnings of a Dom/sub relationship here that held a lot of promise. This story also could go quite a bit further.

The Winter Circle is on the rise and the most desperate hour for humankind is at hand. Working from the shadows, the dark god Anubis, jealous enemy of the goddess Sirius, is setting years’ long plans in motion, a master scheme that will strike home in the heart of Jefferson Pack.

Nate is a survivor.  He survived rejection by his father and his pack when he was a child. He survived being alone, kidnapped, starved, and tortured. But the more he recovers, the more he realizes he seems to be developing abilities that surpass those of the Supreme Alphas.

More than that, though, he can’t move past the scar of knowing he was responsible for killing Darric, even though the Alpha was resurrected by Orion and Nate was forgiven; he can’t let go of his fear that there is something terrible hiding in the many holes in the memories of his childhood.

The Winter Circle strikes, and there is a traitor within the pack, one who means to see the end of all hybrids, including Nate and Kellan’s pups.

But as all hell breaks loose Nate’s greatest fear is not the danger that surrounds him, it’s the danger that hides within him. When Nate’s finds out his true purpose, and terrible secrets are revealed, will love triumph over evil? Or will the secret that Nate carries just be the death of them all?

Author Bio

Victoria Sue has loved books for as long as she can remember. Books were always what pocket money went on and what usually Father Christmas brought. When she ran out of her kid’s adventure stories, she would go raid her mom’s. By the age of eight she was devouring classics like Little Women, and fell in love with love stories.
She’s still in love with them. Any size, any shape, any creature – love is love, no matter what it says on the box.
In fact if they don’t fit very neatly into any box she loves them even more! She has a very patient husband and three wonderful children. In 2010 in search of adventure they all moved from the UK to the US and are happily settled in Florida. Finally, after reading love stories for so long, she decided to write her own.

A VVivacious Review: Darkside (Mate of the Tyger Prince #2) by Shannon West

Rating: 4.5 Stars out of 5

Dark Side“The course of true love never did run smooth.”  – William Shakespeare
General Haggoz finds himself in the impossible situation of having to imprison his own nobyo. As he struggles to come to terms with the wrong doings of Kevin, he also realizes that he will never stop loving Kevin. Kevin finds himself imprisoned in a cell in Haggoz’s house where the only thing that breaks the pall of his existence is Haggoz and the few times he deems to visits him. But while Kevin may have reasons for his deeds, he has given up hope on ever having Haggoz forgive him.

On the other hand, Mikos and Ryan are trying to get through everyday life. They bicker like an old married couple but are just as much in love as they were before.

But when Mikos and Haggoz disappear it is up to Kevin and Ryan to find them and bring them home.

This book is a good companion to its predecessor.

The story of this book follows two couples – Mikos and Ryan; and Haggoz and Kevin. The best part about following two couples was that since both these couples where in different places in their respective relationships, it made for an interesting story as we kind of got all the phases that a relationship goes through in one go.

Mikos and Ryan love each other more than ever but they also argue more than ever. Their story is basically about how navigating married life has been for them so far.

This time around we get more of the royal family. We get lots of interactions with Blake, who I have come to adore. His will is second to none. Also we get to see a whole lot more of Vannos, Anarr, Larz and Nicarr but I guess the best thing was that we got to see Blake interact with his children which is so sweet. I mean I loved the parental vibes he gives off and how well he knows all his kids and how much he loves them. Also we see more of Davos. I can probably read an entire book about Blake and Davos. But there was also a very inconspicuous absence of Blake and Davos’ fourth child Darrek, I mean this time around when we got introduced to all his other siblings, I would have thought we would get to see him too, but no there is nothing about him in this book, absolutely no mention whatsoever. Also more Mikol!

This time around we get a bit more on the shifting aspects of Tygerians. Well we actually get to see Haggoz in his tiger form and personally I loved the scene. But I wish we could get more of tiger Mikos, now that I would love to see.

Kevin and Haggoz’s story line was something extremely beautiful. I mean here are two people who love each other a lot but find themselves on opposite sides of the law. Haggoz had a horrible childhood and Kevin is his one and only shot at happiness because Kevin is his happiness. But Haggoz also has a duty to his king to keep his nobyo, Kevin as a prisoner but try as he might to hate Kevin for his actions he realises that his love for Kevin is boundless. In fact during the entire story I was positive that any hurt Haggoz had ever inflicted on Kevin actually hurt him more and hurting Kevin was actually his way of hurting himself.

Kevin might have reasons for his wrong doings but he doesn’t think that Haggoz will understand. But loving Haggoz is something that has become synonymous with living life for Kevin.

These two tortured souls who want nothing but to be together must walk a difficult and treacherous path to be together. But since their hearts are already one it won’t take long for their minds to realize how foolish their forced separation is.

I loved the story and how it is written the POVs alternating between the two couples, on one side there was the playfulness of Ryan and Mikos and on the other was the heartache of Kevin and Haggoz and they balanced each other perfectly. The plot was the best because seeing the Ryan and Kevin work together to get back their mates was really well done. Also it was nice to see the humans work together to rescue their more powerful Tygerian mates.

My only irritation with the book was that the meeting scene between Haggoz and Kevin was repeated i.e. we got that same scene from Haggoz’s as well as Kevin’s perspective but reading it again was kind of a dredge. Also the party at the end of which Mikos gets shot in the previous book was rehashed this time from Ryan’s POV, these repetitions got kind of boring. Actually as such it wasn’t the repetition of the scene that was so boring it was the fact that I was anticipating that I would have to read the events that I already knew about again that was trying.

Otherwise this book was a great follow up to its predecessor and I loved the epilogue, finally Mikos learns how to deal with his husband. I hope we can get more Mikos and Ryan.

Cover Art by E Connors. The cover is a little weird what with that huge scarf but it is actually a depiction of Kevin from a scene in the book but it makes no sense whatsoever if you haven’t read the book.

Marcus rubbed his right knee. It had started throbbing an hour ago, and was now hurting like a bitch. He’d been sitting down in one place for too long. He wanted to get back upstairs so Kellan could work his magic on it. He’d caught the concerned glance Ricoh had just thrown at him, and willed himself to stay still.

Blaze was drawing the meeting to a close, and they’d gotten loads of work done. He now had thirty gammas with Jed firmly in charge of them all. Blaze had again indicated that they would assume that financial responsibility also. Marcus bristled a little at that, but until he actually knew if Jefferson had any money, there were more important things to worry about…like what were they going to do with the only prisoner locked up downstairs.

Hunter. Marcus had been expecting the question to come up for the last thirty minutes and had wished Ricoh wasn’t there.

Blaze looked at Ricoh. “Something happened two days ago. I decided not to tell you at the time.”

Marcus’ heart beat hard.

“The gammas caught Hunter trying to kill himself.”

Ricoh paled.

“How is that even possible?” Marcus asked quietly. He tightened his grip on Ricoh’s hand. Werewolves were hard wired to protect themselves by shifting. Even he knew that.

“He partially shifted and used his claws to slit his wrists. He passed out and his body immediately shifted as he lost consciousness.”

Ricoh seemed to shrink a little into himself. Marcus glanced down at Ricoh, and instinctively pulled him close. He wasn’t dumb enough to assume that Ricoh would have recovered from being betrayed by Hunter, or being convinced the wolf was his mate for years.

“How is he doing now?” Marcus asked.

Jed answered shortly. “I’m sorry, but I wish he’d succeeded.” Marcus looked up at the older man. Jed looked furious. “He deceived us all. Just look what he did to Nate.”

“He didn’t actually physically touch Nate,” Conner said.

“But he knew about it,” Jed’s voice rose. “He stood by and allowed it to happen. I trusted that man. We all did. Any of his gammas would have given their lives for him as our Alpha.” Marcus watched in silence as Jed struggled to calm down. The enormity of what had happened was finally sinking in. Hunter hadn’t just hurt Nate and Ricoh, who had both managed in barely a week to plant themselves firmly in Marcus’ heart; he had hurt his wolves, his family. They had trusted their Alpha to look after them, and he had let them down in a spectacularly cruel way.

Marcus turned to Ricoh and looked at the worried blue eyes that were blinking up at him. Marcus turned his seat and took Ricoh’s other hand. “You have choices. You can go and see him. You can see him on your own or any one of us could come with you, including me. I can go and see him for you and find out what he wants, or you can simply tell him to get lost. You never have to think of him again.”

Ricoh swallowed. “Will you come with me?”

“I think we’ll take Jed as well.” Marcus glanced at Jed and the man nodded his head sharply.

“Good then.” Blaze stood up. “Might I suggest you see him in a few hours? I know you’ll need to see how Nate is and bring Kellan up to speed with what’s been decided.”

Marcus shot Blaze a grateful glance. Everyone filed out.

“Marcus?” Blaze hesitated.

Marcus turned to Ricoh. “Do you want to organize some food for us to take upstairs?”

Ricoh squeezed Marcus’ hand then headed towards Lilly.

“I just wanted to say I’m very grateful,” Blaze said slowly.

Marcus looked in astonishment at the big guy. “I think running my mouth off might have just cost you a lot of money.”

Blaze waved an impatient hand. “I don’t mean the school, or the housing, both of which are long overdue. I mean the way you spoke to May.”

Marcus screwed his eyes up in confusion.

“I have never said thank you,” Blaze added.

“For what I said to May?”

Blaze chuckled. “I know it’s been nearly a week, but because of Nate we have never had a chance to talk about what happened.” Blaze paused.

“You were willing to die for our wolves.”

Marcus turned at the other voice. He hadn’t realized Darric was still in the room. All his focus had been on Blaze.

“You’re human,” Darric continued. “Stating the obvious, but there aren’t many wolves who would have stepped up and done what you did. We owe you our thanks and our loyalty.’

“And I don’t want you to think I’m taking over, either,” Blaze added.

Marcus put a hand up to stall him. “I’m completely out of my depth and everyone knows it.”

“No, you’re wrong,” Blaze said firmly. “You had May eating out of your hand.”

“By promising her something I had no right to,” Marcus interrupted.

“By being an Alpha and reminding us that packs are about family,” Blaze replied. He put a hand on Marcus’ shoulder. “Your pack made the right decision.”

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Hurri Cosmo here today to share something about her new novel, Then Sawyer Happened.  Welcome, Hurri.

Hurri1

Let’s visit Riven Creek Ranch!

The main ranch house was first built in 1809 but has since been totally rebuilt, expanded and updated. It now boasts six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a large commercial kitchen, a beautiful patio, and meticulously maintained gardens. It has been under the Riven family name for generations.Hurri2

The first meeting between Sawyer and Trace takes place in the very pristine Riven Creek Ranch kitchen. Trace is familiar with the kitchen itself but was never made to do chores in it. Cooking and cleaning were not his thing. However, Sawyer is all about making his ranch hands as comfortable and happy as possible and that means big breakfasts and healthy lunches. Since it’s the only kitchen in the main ranch house, Sawyer Hurri3definitely frowned on the fact Trace accidentally tried to burn it down.

The main barn is a masterpiece of perfection. Sawyer is meticulous when it comes to preserving the Hurri4immaculate interior and exterior so the horses have the best possible living quarters in order to foal.

Sawyer’s manager’s cabin is also under the wing of perfect upkeep. Even though Sawyer finds himself really only sleeping here, it still reflects Sawyer’s dedication to detail and his Hurri6management style of the ranch. He is not about to allow there to be any flaws in things easily managed.Hurri5

Blurb

Trace is nursing a broken heart. He lost his job, his boyfriend of two years was cheating on him, and his apartment building burned right to the ground with all his worldly possessions. It was time for Trace to get out of Minnesota.

So Trace heads for Texas and Riven Creek Ranch, the horse farm his aunt Lois owns. But hours before he arrives, Lois is in a terrible car accident that nearly takes her life, and Trace finds himself in charge of the ranch kitchen. Sounds simple enough and it’s the least he can do for his recuperating aunt.

Then Sawyer happens.

Sawyer is his aunt’s big, beautiful, muscle bound, incredibly sexy straight ranch manager. Someone who has no clue Trace is gay. And meeting the big man should have been okay, except it was in the middle of his aunt’s kitchen at five in the morning and Trace was nearly naked. Embarrassing? Yep. But the very next day Trace proceeded to ramp up his embarrassment by quantum leaps when he nearly sets his aunt’s house on fire and the brooding Sawyer has to come to the rescue.

Seems like Trace’s “luck” followed him.

Not to mention that Aunt Lois’s “accident” was actually attempted murder. And now, they just might want Trace dead, too.

Can Trace figure out who’s behind the attempts on his aunt’s life AND keep Sawyer from finding out he’s hot for the cowboy?

He probably can’t. But he’s going to try.

Excerpt:

“Sawyer! Damn. You scared me.” Trace fell back against the freezer suddenly feeling light headed. He took in the big body blocking any escape he had and his cock twitched as if it liked the idea there was no way out. “I didn’t hear you… behind me.”

“I saw your car in the driveway. How’s Lois?”

Trace shook his head in an attempt to clear it. “She’s awake and very alert… but…” But someone wants her dead. Who? Someone on this ranch? Could it be Sawyer? I trust him with my life… That’s what she said.

“But what?”

Trace looked up into hard cold eyes. The question was genuine. He cared about the condition of his aunt. But what condition did he care her to be in? “Nothing… just… well… I guess you’re going to have to know… I mean…” Damn, he had to stop acting like a horny teenager in front of this man. “Let me… I’m going to make coffee…”

“It’s made. The big insulated urn on the counter is full. Just made it about a half hour ago so it’s fine.”

“Oh. Good. Let’s sit down. I need to sit down.” Trace took a few steps forward which brought him right in front of the cowboy. He expected Sawyer to move, to back up, but he didn’t. Then Trace did the unthinkable. His body reacted on its own as he put his hand on the big man’s chest and pushed. There would have been no way on God’s green earth he would have been able to physically move the cowboy without his express permission, not to mention help. But Trace’s brain seemed to totally malfunction in this man’s presence.

And, as expected, being pushed in any direction was never going to work for Sawyer. Sawyer grabbed his wrist, twisted it tight behind Trace, which brought Trace up solid, against Sawyer’s hard body, chest to chest. Being several inches taller, Sawyer glared down into Trace’s shocked face, a smoldering look in his eyes. Trace could feel Sawyer’s hot breath on his face, sense the man’s tense muscles from his pecs down through his thighs…

Meet the Author

Hurri Cosmo lives in Minnesota where she holds tight to the idea that there, where it’s cold a good part of the year, she won’t age as fast. Yep, she avoids the truth as much as she avoids mirrors. But one of the reasons she loves writing is reality doesn’t always offer up a “happily ever after” and being able to take control of that is a powerful lure. Being a happy ending junkie, writing just makes them easier to find. Oh, she doesn’t mind “real life” and she does try to at least keep it in mind when she writes her stories, but she truly loves creating a wonderful couple, knowing they will fall in love and have their HEA. Every – single – time. And, of course, that is exactly the reason she loves reading this genre, too. Give her a glass of red wine, some dark chocolate, and her computer, whether she is reading or writing, and she will entertain herself for hours. The fact she actually gets paid to do it is Snickers bars on the frosting on the cake.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: James Eyre by Jade Astor

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

James EyreA gender twisting adaptation of the classic Gothic romance Jane Eyre!

In Victorian England, 21-year-old James Eyre, frightened by his feeling for another man, decides to leave the boys’ school where he has spent ten years, first as a student and then as a teacher. He manages to secure a position as a private tutor for Axel Vance, the ward of a wealthy man who owns an estate in Yorkshire.

From the night of his arrival, James begins to sense that things are not as they should be at Thistleton Manor, the home of the enigmatic Edmond Manchester. Late at night, wild screams seem to echo through the house, and during the daytime objects disappear from James’s room and are replaced with sinister-looking voodoo dolls. Though his instincts tell him to flee, James stays on because he enjoys his duties and the company of his pupil—and even more so because he has begun to develop an attraction for his employer, Mr. Manchester.

To his surprise, Mr. Manchester seems to return his feelings. However, a jealous former lover and a phantom-like presence in the house seem determined to tear them apart. If he is to have any hope of a happy future with the man he loves, James must solve the mystery of Thistleton Manor and save Edmond’s life as well.
I may be the only person in my age group in America who has never read Jane Eyre so although I know this story is based on that classic, I can only rate this story on its own worth, and it is indeed worth it!

James Eyre, a teacher at Gloamwood, the school where he’s lived since he was a young boy when his uncle sent his ward away to be educated. First a student, now a teacher, he’s in love with his best friend, though neither man has ever expressed their feelings out loud, and Hallum, his love, is now planning to marry, a role expected of all young men. James, on the other hand, will not marry, and to get away from the happy couple, he accepts a position at Thistleton Manor located on the moors far north of London.

He is to be tutor to Axel Vance, the ward of Edmond Manchester in a big old rambling mansion staffed with only a handful of servants. Complete with mysterious, loud screams in the dark of night, coming from what sounds like above but may be outside, the mansion is very definitely a cold and spooky place. Right from the beginning, he enjoys working with Axel, a bright young man who wants to be Robin Hood, but there are others in the household he can’t warm up to. That includes the butler and a servant named Gregory who James suspects is behind both the night screams and the mysterious disappearance of his favorite cravat. He also extremely dislikes Edmond’s friend Ivor, a man with whom Edmond obviously had a dalliance in the past and who seems to want to get back with Edmond in the present.

But Edmond has his sights set on James, and when he acts on them, James reciprocates. A virgin in all things related to sex, James falls madly for Edmond, and even when things that go bump in the night cause a serious injury to Edmond, James expresses his devotion and determines to stay and get to the bottom of the mystery. From that point on, the mysterious person who is responsible for the noises in the night takes the forefront in the story. And though James is called away to London to answer his uncle’s death-bed summons, he hurries back just in time to be embroiled in danger as the mystery at the mansion comes to a head.

I enjoyed this story, my first from this author. The romance was sweet, with most scenes between the men going fade-to-black, and with James’s innocence and his idealistic attitude appropriate to the Victorian era in which this story is set. The mystery and resulting action were highly interesting and entertaining, though I found the London interlude to be unimportant in any way other than to get James away for a few days. Most of all, I felt like I was reading a highly enjoyable M/M version of a classic novel, and I’d recommend it to all lovers of classic old-fashioned love stories complete with handsome MCs, a precocious ward, and spooky night horrors.
