A Fish Out of Water/Racing for the Sun Crossover

Hiding the Moon is all about Burton and Ernie. I like it, but it didn’t add anything out of the ordinary to the plot. Rating it by itself, I would have given it five stars, As a retelling of A Few Good Fish, I will give it two stars.
Jackson’s & Ellery’s are as integral to the book as Burton and Ernie since we are rereading the previous book in the series from a different point of view. I want it more about the main characters. Perhaps for the story to start after the previous one and not to run parallel. It seems as they’re playing second fiddle in their own story.
As always, there’s a lot of detail and characterization. The flow works, and the moments between Burton and Earnie are worth reading. In general, is a good bridge for all the related books.
I loved Greg Tremblay narrating the previous books but I didn’t realize the narrator for this one was Nick J. Russo. Which is surprising. Most of the characters’ voices were pretty similar.
The cover by Reese Dante is completely different from the first three books in the Fish Out of Water series. It has a similar air than Racing for the Sun but not enough to to make them cohesive. It is pretty and it goes with the story plot.

Those who follow this unique series will be happy to know that big, strong, and sweet Vance Connelly finally got his story. I hope this isn’t the last in the series, but if it is, it’s a darn good one to end on. Vance grew up knowing he wanted to be a cop like his other family members, but when the scar appeared and they suddenly realized he was one of the “enhanced,” his hopes for a bright future took a downturn. That is, until the creation of the FBI Human Enhanced Rescue Organization in Tampa where Vance was hired immediately. 
A different sort of story from Jay Northcote than I am used to, the early parts of this book deal with the relationship between Joel and his three-year-old daughter, Evie, and her mother Clare. Clare and Joel were friends when younger, and when one drunken experiment too many led to pregnancy, Joel agreed to joint custody. There was no need to discuss marriage because Joel is gay and not interested in more with Clare. In fact, as the story opens, he and his young boyfriend Dan are the primary focus when Evie is not around. It’s evident that Dan is not the love of Joel’s life, as Joel is undisturbed by Dan’s side sexual encounters, but quite a bit of page time is devoted to the period in which they are together. Eventually, Joel and Dan lose interest in each other and the relationship fades. 
Rolling Thunder passes by my parents farm every year on their way into the District and my father, a veteran of the Korean war, goes outside and salutes them as they pass by. Our media here in the metropolitan area is full of pictures and videos marking the solemn day of remembrance as flags are put at every grave at Arlington and the crowds swell at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial as well as that of the World War II one nearby. If you have never visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, then you have not experienced the power and overwhelming sense of loss that pervades that site. The Wall itself a marker of the high cost of valor and service to our country in the names of the men and women lost reflected back to us. In that black stone reflection, we see the list of names in chronological order and our own reflections, the recipients of their sacrifice. For me, never has a memorial to our dead felt so alive, awash in grief, and sorrow and gratitude.
