A MelanieM Advent Release Day Review: Homemade from the Heart by Bru Baker

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Craft store owner Grant has always been a sucker for a pretty face, and that goes double for a pretty face with an adorable sidekick. When seven-year-old Aubrey has her heart set on taking Grant’s already-full holiday craft series, he caves and gives up his one day off a week so she (and her hot guardian, Josh) can take private lessons. Their flirting ramps up week after week, and even though Josh isn’t with Aubrey’s mother, Grant can’t be sure the man isn’t straight. Maybe he’s just being friendly. And Josh, who most definitely is not straight, is afraid of being the creepy guy hitting on the teacher.

Frustrated by their stubbornness and cluelessness, Aubrey takes matters into her own hands. She decides the best gift to give Josh is something homemade and from the heart—a boyfriend they’ll both love.

Another absolutely adorable, full out Christmasy short story, Homemade from the Heart by Bru Baker is full of good cheer and romance.  How can it not be when one of the main characters owns and runs a craft store that’s making holiday crafts?  Hello Snowman and glitter by the buckets!  It made my inner kid want to reach for the glue and craft projects myself!

With a deft and loving touch, Baker’s characters come to life as Josh and Aubrey find their way to Grant’s store.  After finding Grant’s popular holiday craft series full, an improvised group of private lessons ensues and the road to romance is on.

I loved how natural, frazzled, and funny it all felt.  Nothing like a child, the oncoming date of Christmas and the need to make a series of presents can bring the pressure home and yet love of family too.  And both men are trying to make it special and find a path to each other as well.  The writing flowed, the storyline was fun and lovely, and the ending just right.

Homemade from the Heart by Bru Baker is one story I can not only recommend but wouldn’t mind checking back in on this couple later on in the year.  Aubrey too.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have B.G. Thomas back again to talk about his release Sometimes the Best Presents Can’t Be Wrapped.  Welcome, Ben.

✒︎

Hello again! It’s me, BG Thomas, aka Ben. Please feel free to call me that. Ben, that is. I hope your holiday is going well. As you read these words, I’ll be on my way to the little town where my husband grew up. We’ll spend a good part of Christmas Eve with his mother, a wonderful lady that I fortunately get to call, “Mom.” I am a lucky man. Sadly, I have to work Christmas day, but I am crossing my fingers that I will be out in the early afternoon. Hey. They are going to feed us, and that’s a nice consolation. I just wish I was home for the release of my new book, on Christmas day, which is called Sometimes the Best Presents Can’t Be Wrapped.

Now originally Sometimes the Best Presents Can’t Be Wrapped was supposed to be a part of Dreamspinner Press’s annual Advent Calendar, which is an amazing collection of a holiday story every day for the month of December. I’ve been a part of that collection almost every year since I started writing (and selling) books, back in 2010. The theme for that series of stories is Stocking Stuffers, where sometimes it’s the little things that mean the most…. The holidays are a time when bigger often means better, and meals are huge, decorations are over-the-top, and elaborate gifts and grand gestures are one way to show affection. But beneath all the pomp and ceremony are the stories about the very best presents. Presents that often don’t have anything to do with “over-the-top.”

And sometimes the best presents really can’t be wrapped.

A friend of mine were talking and it was in that conversation about a love of animals that the idea was born for my story. But before I tell you where I am going with this, I’ll give you the cover blurb….

SOMETIMES THE BEST PRESENTS CAN’T BE WRAPPED

Ned Balding used to be a decent man—until the stress of seemingly countless responsibilities changes him, and he becomes cold and driven—the kind of man who considers firing an employee days before Christmas. The kind of man who kicks a dog…. But Ned’s transgressions haven’t gone unseen. A Salvation Army Santa witnesses his misdeeds and decides Ned needs to be taught a lesson.

When Ned wakes up the next morning, he’s stunned to discover he’s been transformed into a dog.

In the past year, Jake Carrara has lost his mother, a lover… even his dog. His boss came close to firing him just before the holidays. He isn’t sure he’s ready for another pet when he’s asked to foster a dog, but Jake’s good heart won’t let him refuse. Little does he know, this isn’t just any dog.

Through a twist of fate, two people with little reason to be friends might teach each other to rediscover the good—and the love—in life…..

I let the powers that be at Dreamspinner Press know what I was planning and they liked the idea. Told me to give it a shot. That if I could pull it off, it was just might be the kind of story they were looking for. And so I started to write.

Thing is I wasn’t writing cutsie, although I knew I would certainly have some cute moments in it. I mean like the first time the new Ned, in his body, needs to go…ah…to the bathroom. He wants to stand. And he does. To some rather humorous results. He also can’t bear the idea of eating out of a bowl on the floor. But how does he communicate all this to the young man who rescues him?

And I also wanted to make sure that dog-Ned saw the world the way a dog would see the world, not only from his lower height, but with the colorblindness that dogs see. I thought they saw the world in black and white. How surprised I was to learn I was wrong.

As it turned out, this story wasn’t being contained in the typical 5-18 thousand word limit for Advents stories. Now I’ve gone a little long before. Mele Kalikimaka, which I wrote with the amazing up and comer Noah Willoughby went something like 22 thousand words! But when went to 25K and then 30K and then 35K and still wasn’t done, I knew—sadly—I wasn’t going to get to be a part of the 2017 Advent Calendar. I was pretty bummed to. Because I think Sometimes… was pretty much the best holiday story I had ever written, even better than fan-favorite Grumble Monkey and the Department Store Elf.

So I wrote Dreamspinner Press again and told them what was happening and they told me to go ahead, finish it, and submit it. And that is just what I did.

Guess what? It was too long for their Advent Calendar. But they liked it. They loved it! Enough to publish it independently from their collection of holiday stories. And to release it on Christmas Day! Which I found pretty darned wonderful.

So there you go. That is how Sometimes the Best Presents Can’t Be Wrapped came to be. I hope you will give it a chance. It is a romance like you probably have never seen before. And it is filled with the most important kind of love there is. Pure unconditional love. I think it will fill your heart with warmth and bring a tear to your eyes.

Happy Holidays, no matter what your beliefs!
And may you have a blessed New Year!
Love, B.G. “Ben” Thomas

About the Author

B.G. Thomas lives in Kansas City with his husband of more than a decade and their fabulous dogs Sarah Jane and Oliver. He is blessed to have a lovely daughter as well as many extraordinary friends. He has a great passion for life.

B.G. loves romance, comedies, fantasy, science fiction, and even horror—as far as he is concerned, as long as the stories are character driven and entertaining, it doesn’t matter the genre. He has gone to literature conventions his entire adult life where he’s been lucky enough to meet many of his favorite writers. He has made up stories since he was a child; it is where he finds his joy.

In the nineties, he wrote for gay adult magazines but stopped because the editors wanted all sex without plot. “The sex is never as important as the characters,” he says. “Who cares what they are doing if we don’t care about them?” Excited about the growing male/male romance market, he began writing again. He submitted a novella and was thrilled when it was accepted in four days. Since then the romantic tales have poured out of him. “It’s like I’m somehow making up for a lifetime’s worth of story-telling!”

In 2015 he made an entry every day in his blog “365 Days of Silver,” where he found something every day to be grateful for. You can find it right here: https://365daysofsilver.wordpress.com/

“Leap, and the net will appear” is his personal philosophy and his message. “It is never too late,” he testifies. “Pursue your dreams. They will come true!”

A Caryn Release Day Review: Color of You by CS Poe

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

This is the last Christmas book I am reviewing this season, and I’m going to treat it a little bit like a hallmark movie.  At a different time of the year, I would probably be more cynical and take off a star, but this is the season of peace and goodwill, so if the characters act a bit schmaltzy I am just chalking that up to the spirit of the season!

Bowen Merlin is a classical musician who has left the NYC rat race to teach band in northern New Hampshire.  He’s excited about the opportunity, and the chance to work with elementary and high school students.  He knows he can’t expect much of a gay scene, but he’s pretty much sworn off trying to find a compatible boyfriend – after all, who would expect a tall, skinny redhead with a penchant for bow ties to be an alpha male?

Felix Hansen is a single father, and proprietor of the Snowy Ridge Apple Orchard and Christmas Tree Farm.  He’s a big guy, but he’s shy and tender-hearted, easily hurt, and self-conscious of the extensive scars he carries from the fire that burned down his house and prompted his move to New Hampshire.  He has also been out of the dating game for years, content to raise his teenage son Alan and support his community.

Bowen has sound-to-color synesthesia, which means that all sounds have specific colors for him, and affect how he feels about or reacts to people.  His first exposure to Felix is hearing his voice, which is a rich amber, warm and affectionate, a color that Bowen has never experienced before and he is incredibly attracted to it.  After an adorable meet-cute, the men start dating, and quickly find that they are perfect for each other.  There are obstacles to overcome – like the fact that Alan is one of Bowen’s band students – but things look like they will be pretty rosy.

But since this is a Christmas Hallmark-type story, there has to be some conflict, and it comes in the guise of homophobia that might destroy both men.  But the wonderful secondary characters – Bowen’s best friend Scarlet, accounting teacher Stephen, and of course Alan – jump in and save the day, with help from the entire town (except for the homophobic assholes who are basically tarred and feathered and run out of town).  And they lived happily ever after.

Even though the plot was simple and the conflicts resolved way too easily to be anything like real life, I found both MCs to be wonderfully likeable and their romance inevitable.  The dialogue is light-hearted, the pace is steady throughout, and the book is easy to read in one afternoon.  I loved how the synesthesia was worked into the story.  Although the book is from Bowen’s point of view, the colors he saw and the way he described this condition to others (which was exactly like Wikipedia, but that’s a good thing, right?) created a different kind of visualization of his emotions that was really intriguing.

Cover art by Reese Dante is perfect for the book.  The models are just what I expected the characters to look like – minus scars – and the gold/amber lettering and music notes highlighted one of the main themes, which also ties in with the title.  It’s a nice cover regardless, but after reading the book I really appreciated it!

BLURB

Kieran

My relationship with Jared has lasted too long. He’s mesmerizing, beautiful in his devotion, pure in his need. He reaches parts of me I thought no longer existed, places I’d never known were there. His submission is a gift. His cries of pleasure and pain call to the most primal parts of me. I want to inhale him, own him, mark him as mine. He’s my boy and I need to be his Daddy, but my fear holds me back. I’ll fail him like I’ve failed everyone else I’ve loved. Before that happens, I’ll walk away.

Jared

I’ve never known security, love, or true pleasure before Kieran. With every touch, every command, every second of blissful, torturous pain, my heart grows and my soul is at peace. He protects me, spoils me, gives me what I need. Still, in some ways, he’s closed off and won’t let me in. But Kieran’s given me strength. I’ve evolved, and won’t accept less than I deserve…and I won’t let Daddy accept less than he deserves, either.

It’s a delicate balance: give and take, pleasure and pain. Together we can break each other down to our purest forms and build each other up again. Kieran always says I’m stronger than I think, but I know that together we’re invincible…if only he’d believe me.

We have two choices: say goodbye or fight for what’s always been out of both our reaches…fulfillment.

Warning: Jared’s Fulfillment contains BDSM elements, domestic discipline, spanking, and daddy kink–without age play–between consenting adults. If any of those things offend you, reading this book might not be a good idea.

Jared’s Evolution and Jared’s Fulfillment must be read in order.

Jared’s Fulfillment is part of the Desires Unleashed collection. Some books in this collection will have darker themes. Please be aware Desires Unleashed are er*tic and not your typical Riley Hart romance. You can expect the mental and emotional journey to be led by the physical/s*xual moments–which will be intense, frequent and kinky.

EXCERPT

“Come here, boy. Your tie isn’t straight.”

I walked over to Kieran and tilted my head up so he could fix my tie. It was silly how good it made me feel, since it was such a simple thing to do for someone, but I loved it when Kieran did the small things. Sometimes, I didn’t think people realized how much the small things mattered, but he did. Kieran thought of everything.

I smiled because I knew it brought him joy too.

“What are you grinning at?” he asked as he finished.

“You,” I told him, and then added, “Thank you, Daddy.”

“So beautiful when you say that to me.” He rubbed his thumb across my bottom lip. “I love to watch your mouth when you call me Daddy.” He cupped my cheek, leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to my lips. I savored it, nearly melting into him. Kieran reached me on a bone-deep level. My body had a visceral reaction to him any time he was in the same room. And the reaction had grown over the last month, since the night of the play. It was then when I’d quietly decided to show Kieran how much I loved him, with my service to him. When I’d decided to secretly fight for us, the best way I knew how.

“Finish getting ready. I’ll put bagels on,” he told me, pressing another quick kiss to my mouth.

“Thank you,” I replied, before watching Kieran walk out of the room. I loved the way he moved—the power in the way he held his body. The dominance in him. He filled me in ways I never knew I needed, in ways that left me forever changed. He was everything to me and I couldn’t deny that. I didn’t want to. I wanted to bask in it because, for the first time in my life, I truly understood what it was like to be happy. Secure. At peace. Protected.

After walking over to Kieran’s dresser, I plucked a pair of socks from the top drawer, pulled them onto my feet, and then slipped on my shoes before I met him in the kitchen.

“You’re going to lunch with Marco today?” he confirmed. Marco and I had begun spending quite a bit of time together. He was funny and understanding. He always answered my questions and freely shared his own stories with me. I truly liked him and was thankful for this new friendship.

“Yes.”

I walked over to help but he said, “Sit. I’ll take care of it.”

Another smile pulled at my lips; I loved the feeling of Kieran caring for me…of him telling me what to do. It made my head spin in the best sort of way. It was amazing, really, the way this lifestyle had changed me. The way it had grounded me—strengthened me. It’s not something I would have believed before my relationship with Kieran. It’s not something most people could likely understand but then…why did anyone else have to understand it? It was the way we chose to live. People often forgot that because something was wrong for them, it didn’t mean it was wrong for everyone, or hell, that it was wrong in any way.

Synopsis

Recently dumped (again) for being cold, Guy gladly accepts his publisher friend’s request to go to a remote hut in wintry Nunavut to find out whether aspiring novelist Cam Campbell is a plagiarist. By agreeing also to help the eccentric ecologist survey wildlife for a month, Guy buys time to assess Cam’s innocence and hear stories about Cam’s late father–Guy’s favorite fantasy writer and the man whose book Cam is accused of stealing.

Guy’s investigation is soon biased by his attraction to Cam and the growing concern about Cam’s odd behavior. At times, Cam dissociates and is icier than Guy could ever be, yet he’s the only one who’s ever recognized, at a glance, the emotions burning beneath Guy’s surface. Guy knows he’s the best person to help Cam abandon the dangerous wilds outside and address those in Cam’s head, but he also knows that he’ll lose the chance if he comes clean about his ulterior motives for getting close to Cam. How can he convince Cam to come in from the cold… and why are they both really out there anyway?

Chapter One

At least he wasn’t nervous about meeting the kid anymore. He’d stopped feeling anything at all besides dread and the wheels of the suitcase he’d slung over his shoulder bruising his numb ass with every stumble. Finally, Guy glimpsed smoke wisping from a rustic pipe chimney a hundred yards farther than the thousand miles he’d already come. His brogues, so iced over they looked like glass slippers, skidded on the porch’s wooden boards. The leather-gloved hand he threw forward to balance himself rattled the doorframe with a thudding knock, sending ice shards showering behind him from the rafters overhead.

“Hell-lo?” he croaked. “Cam-meron C—”

The alluring burst of firelight that greeted him as the door opened was immediately extinguished by someone squeezing the swollen wood shut behind themselves as they stepped forth. Guy was suddenly too surprised to be awestruck over meeting Alessandro De Carli’s son at last. He was glad his frozen eyelids couldn’t blink, because the guy—the specter, presumably Cameron Campbell—might disappear if he did. For a second, he wondered if he’d knocked on the wrong gingerbread house door, only there was no other shelter for fifty miles.

Cameron Campbell was known to be even more reclusive than his late father, but he wasn’t actually supposed to be mythic. The tiny guy blocking the door with sturdy, unlaced boots looked like a wood nymph. Eyes as blue as distant stars stared at him unabashedly. Maybe the reason no journalists had ever snapped pictures of the kid, and why he had no online presence, was because he couldn’t be caught on film.

“Incredible.” Cameron must have read Guy’s mind, and he pressed rosebud lips together in exasperation. “Are you alone? Did you hitch here? There’s no corpse in a cab parked on the highway I need to go rescue? Insane.”

Guy respectively nodded and shook his head, hoping the well-earned insult was aimed at the driver on his way west who’d dropped him at the side of a barely used road, far from the highway. Guy had considered himself lucky to thumb a ride at all out of the tiny settlement of Ipasila, built around a gas station, which was the closest town to Campbell and two hours’ drive from the Hudson Bay hamlet of Arviat in southern Nunavut. In hindsight, the man had been almost as reckless as Guy himself had been for not driving him straight to the police. Instead, Guy had been let out of the relative safety of a truck armed with nothing more than the GPS tracker Guy had brought with him and prayed was accurate.

“C-Cameron…” Not Cameron, Guy revised. A Cameron was a strapping guy—like a Brad or a David—or a blonde woman. This pixie prince was either a Cam or a question mark. His eyes looked magnified behind the lenses of large glasses, the arms of which must have burned cold against his temples because Cam removed them—only for his naked eyes to be comically large. It was still possible he wasn’t even De Carli’s son, since he looked nothing like him. Wrote nothing like him either, which was why Guy was here. “You’re C-Campbell, right? De Carli’s s-son?”

It was Campbell’s turn to draw back in surprise. “Are you from a newspaper?”

“Am I s-selling subscriptions?” Traipsing from cabin to cabin after dark? “D-does it matter? Let me in.” Heat from indoors infused the porch floorboards and bled into Guy’s damp soles, announcing itself as pain in his brittle toes.

“I don’t do interviews about my father.” Cam reached inside the hood of his puffy coat, just a shade lighter than his luminous, creamy skin, to pull a long coil of black hair forward. It hung like gossamer over the gray scarf around his shoulders.

He’d let down his hair, so now Guy could enter, right? “Do I l-look like a journalist?”

“Nah, you look too honest.”

Guy’s brows were too frozen to frown at the sarcasm. He knew damn well he had a poker face. That was the problem; now that he was literally incapable of moving his face he probably looked normal, not dangerously hypothermic.

“I’m with your p-publisher.”

“You’re from Ames? In that case, first, tell Claire she should be fired and charged with attempted murder for sending you. Secondly, and for the hundredth time, I canceled the submission for Close to Home. I didn’t mean to send it to you guys in the first place. Third, stop hounding me about it.”

“Fourth, f-fuck off,” Guy anticipated his next order. “I c-can’t. And I’m from F-Fairbanks Press.”

“Ha! Are you guys even still publishing me?” Cam swept his bangs behind an ear, which was slightly pointed at its tip.

Of course, it is. “You’re the one who n-never answers emails.”

“Internet’s intermittent out here. And there’s nothing wrong with that manuscript that isn’t Fairbanks’ fault.” Cam pursed his lips, which were tinging blue before Guy’s eyes, and nuzzled his chin into his scarf. Guy was torn between thinking it served him right to be cold and wanting to offer his firstborn as passage to the gatekeeper who halted Guy’s shuffle forward by holding up a gloved palm. “Uh-uh, no way. You ought to know the drill, New Yorker. You are, aren’t you?”

Guy was as native a New Yorker as anyone who’d moved there in adulthood and would never live elsewhere. A load of the population was in the same burned boat as him, so yes, he could claim to be from New York, but that was irrelevant while the heat fleeing his eyes stung.

“S-so?”

“So the same rules apply here as there,” Cam continued, as though this were a holiday home in Connecticut. “You know, I met a hiker from Texas here who’d never even seen snow before, but he knew enough about it to come in September, not March. Why do you think I can’t get any volunteers to assist me at the moment?”

Because not only did this waif conduct questionable wildlife research in the middle of nowhere while purportedly editing a novel, but he also lived at the end of a spur trail a mile west of an icy road to nowhere.

Cam stamped his feet, blowing into hands he cupped over his mouth. “Come on.”

What did the little sylph want? For Guy to roll a seven? Produce a magic key?

“For God’s sake, guy, you need to strip!” Cam finally twisted the door handle behind him, spilling back into an amber glow. Guy tumbled in after, out of the deadly night air.

Instantly, his coat became the warmest bath Guy had ever had the pleasure of sinking into. Flames in the hearth curled into come-hither licks Guy’s jellied legs couldn’t obey. There was enough ecstasy to be had where he wilted against the closed door. The sensation wrenched him from numb to overwhelmed in a blink, and thrust him the closest to an imminent powerful orgasm he’d been since…he didn’t want to know.

Cam busied himself over at a kitchen counter, ignoring Guy, who stood, shaking in the doorway, suddenly struggling with a boner that had sprung from pure physical shock, surprising and mortifying him. He had to admit he could see how post-hypothermia blood rushing around could cause such a phenomenon, but man, did it have to? Thankfully, melting into a hunch helped hide it when Cam reappeared in front of him wearing only a few layers of sweaters and brandishing two steaming mugs of coffee.

Its intoxicating aroma further confused his senses by going straight to Guy’s cock. Now, there’s a new kink. He failed to convince himself his hand quivering was an aftereffect of the cold, not the sight of the now gloveless, pale hand offering a chipped mug with the handle out for Guy to grab. Cam raised an eyebrow at Guy’s taking it with his left hand.

“Oh, you’re a lefty?”

“I guess,” Guy said, distracted by just how fine Cam’s fingers were…and how Cam’s palm was apparently immune to the hot ceramic he held courtesy of calluses, frostbite, or immortality. “Looks nice….”

“Not too strong?” Cam asked, a smile curling the corners of his mouth.

“N-no such thing.” Guy slurped half the treacly concoction before gasping, “Thanks.”

“Sit.” Cam nodded to a couch piled high with blankets resembling a laundry pile. There was nowhere to sit except on top of them. “And I wasn’t kidding before. You need to strip, like, five minutes ago. Show me some skin.”

“What?” Skin?

“And a business card.”

Shit. Guy had no such thing—he should have made Huw make him a mock-up one before coming. If Cam was astute enough to ask questions like that, it might be hard to deceive him as planned. Plausible excuses whirled in his mind, but were as hard to grasp as the snowflakes he ruffled loose from his hair, stalling for time. He was surprised they hadn’t melted, since his scalp was beginning to burn….

“Of course, I’d prefer skin first. And so would you,” Cam said.

“I’m here to work,” Guy retorted, reinforcing the lie to himself.

“How do you know De Carli was my father?”

Guy blinked. “Isn’t he?”

“My pen name’s Cameron Stewart. I know my real name’s on the contract I signed with you guys, but that’s Cameron Campbell.”

“That’s De Carli’s son’s name.”

“It’s also as common as mud. How do you know I’m him?”

“Because…” Heat surged through Guy’s veins, and flashes from the fireplace in his periphery blinded him. Flames shot up his spine, turning his thoughts to smoke. His erection stirred as he willed it to subside. Instead, his heartbeat faded, which was a lot more alarming. “Because…”

Struggling to balance his tilting mug on the surging, damp footwell he slumped down upon, Guy bit at his glove to peel it from his roasting hand. It dangled from his lip, and he batted it away to better claw at his collar, trying to escape its stranglehold. Sweat made it slippery in his shaking hands, and he panted more feverishly than he had while staggering outside, where everything was white—as white as everything was turning now.

“Hey, stay with me, guy.” Cam rose from his slouch against the back of the sofa, surrounded by a blizzard of stars that swarmed Guy’s vision. He was warmth personified, the most enchanting thing in the dreamscape Guy had navigated to get here, and he was still miraculous, even now that everything had become a nightmare. His own sharp intake of breath echoed from afar as Cam lunged toward him through the static.

“I hoped you were him,” spilled in a murmur from Guy without his control. Strangely, Cam seemed to slip farther away the closer he got, as Guy sensed himself falling. It looked like he wouldn’t manage to save De Carli’s son after all. Well, he thought as all light vanished, at least he’d managed to meet him. And he got to die in the arms of a beyond-beautiful man.

No, forget that, his consciousness broke through. De Carli’s son was stunning, strange, and fascinatingly all the way out here. Never mind the fact Guy couldn’t write, he was going to live and find out what made Cam tick if it was the last thing he did.

Almost There! The Best is Yet to Come

2017 Best of Lists Continue…

This week I’m devoting our blog to lists from our readers and what wonderful lists they came up with.  One author on many of there lists is one that will be on mine too.  But in what manner?  Because Annabeth Albert is one author I’m wrestling with right now for mine own lists because I love so many of her stories.  What do I choose from?  Her #gaymers series (Status Update, Beta Test)? Her Out of Uniform series (On Point) or even her newest one Rainbow Cove (Tender with a Twist)?  Rhys Ford for her gritty urban fantasy and contemporary? Heidi Cullinan? On and on, there are authors with multiple stories that made a huge impact on me this year…how to narrow the list down or do I?

Please feel free to chime in here.  Because my lists start tending to look like scrolls rolling across the floor…

It is ALWAYS difficult for me to choose things for “Best” List. Mainly because I read a lot (more than 400 titles, MM and MF) so I hate sorting them out in order. But I’ll try. And I prefer to use the word “Favorite” rather than Best, since I know my taste is different than others

An Alisa Review: The Icicles by R.W. Clinger

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Meet the Icicles: unpredictable, exciting, comedic, and festive.

When Jonah Icicle decides to spend Christmas with his family and introduces his new boyfriend Sandy, everyone reacts differently. His mother Pam is combative, always judgmental to a fault, obnoxious, and loud. Jonah’s sister Willa adores the new man in her brother’s life and feels he will be a key player in their close unit. Willa’s husband Bobo suffers from hypersexuality and unfortunately can’t keep his hands off Sandy. And Jake, Jonah’s brother and Pam’s favorite son, is more interested in his marijuana than his relatives.

As the snow flies and the electricity goes out, the Icicles fight, hug, and laugh. Can they welcome the holiday spirit — and Sandy — into their lives?

What did I just read?  That is what has been going through my head since I finished this book.  With how they keep referring to what happened when Jonah brought his previous boyfriend home I can’t believe he is willing to bring another.

To me, Jonah’s family is just plain nuts.  His mom doesn’t show respect for anyone, Bobo is at first only referred to as a cheater but apparently his hypersexuality is an excuse?  He didn’t say one nice thing about anyone in his family when he was trying to reassure Sandy in the truck during the ride.  I had trouble understanding these characters especially why they would subject themselves to these people even if they are family.  So much seemed scattered throughout the story that it made it even harder to get into it.

The cover art by Written Ink Designs is nice Christmas themed cover.

An Alisa Advent Release Day Review: Candy Canes and Cappuccinos by Elizabeth Coldwell

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Kyle is struggling to run his coffee shop on his own after his partner walked out on him. He has his eye on Steven, who comes into the shop each day, but hasn’t worked up the nerve to express his interest. When Steven asks Kyle to help out with Christmas lunch at the homeless shelter where he works, Kyle is too exhausted to agree. He donates his tips but still feels he’s blown his chances with Steven and made himself look like a selfish jerk.

On Christmas Day, Kyle sees a way to make amends—to both Steven and the needy people depending on his kindness. It’s the right thing to do, and Kyle hopes he can clear up the misunderstanding and show Steven the type of man he really is. Maybe then they can consider some dessert when the lunch at the shelter is over…

Kyle and Steven have been flirting with each other for months but never took anything further.  Kyle has worked hard to make his coffee shop successful and doesn’t think before he gives Steven an answer.  I did love how he stepped up when he was walking and knew the people from the shelter needed help.  Despite their flirting neither of them know much about each other and they get a little bit of a chance to talk.  However, I couldn’t help but feel that Steven pushed Kyle a bit too much once they were alone and I didn’t like the explanation that it means more so it’s okay

Cover Art by Paul Richmond is the series cover for the Stocking Stuffer 2017 Advent collection.  Humorous but doesn’t pertain to one story.

A MelanieM Review: King (Executioners #3) by J.M. Dabney

Rating:  4.25 stars out of 5

Andrew King’s life wasn’t what he’d expected it to be. At thirty he was a single dad who drove his rig to make ends meet and played in his band Executioners on the weekends. King saw himself being a husband again one day because that’s what was expected. When Melanie had gotten pregnant, their parents had given them one choice—they’d stuck it out a year. At twenty-eight, he became a single dad when Melanie went off to college. He loved his son more than anything, and they’d quickly fell into a life of just the two of them, well, not just the two of them there was Lincoln too. His ex-wife was still his best friend. They all co-parented Mal, it was natural and right.

Lincoln Church lived for his nephew and his teaching job. While King, his ex-brother-in-law, worked driving a truck. As a result, Mal ended up living with him most of the time. It was the closest Linc would ever come to being a dad. The only bleak spot in his life was his feelings for King which he thought would never be reciprocated. It wasn’t so bad because he still had King and Mal in his life and that meant the world to him.

A stupid accident and a broken leg sidelined King, keeping him off the road. When King needed help, Lincoln rushed in, and King couldn’t deny his attraction or love for Lincoln. Would one kiss ruin the weird, little family they’d created?

Out of all the books in all of the connected series, the main characters in King are probably the most little known elements when we first meet them.  In every other story, from the Twirled World Ink group through Brawlers and now the Executioners, the main players are known entities because we’ve encountered them multiple times in just about everyone else’s stories.   Powers, Georgia has become an intimate, familiar destination full of people I’ve come to know and love.  Reading a story in any series feels like a homecoming.  Which is why King is such a standout amongst them all.

Turns out intentionally so.  I interviewed J.M. Dabney for my Author Spotlight not too long about and this is what  the author had to say about the character and book:

The Executioners have two more books, King who you see a little of in the course of the series. Unconsciously, I believe I kept him a bit more sequestered for the fact I wanted a bit more mystery with him. Readers see him as a player, but I also highlight his love for his son. It the dichotomy of what allow the readers to see and what is actually happening behind the scenes. Hinting at what is to come, but hopefully surprising them when they finally to read the book.

I think Dabney accomplished exactly  what she intended here.  King presented himself as a character I was eager to get to know and what emerged was a story of sweetness and love, both romantic and familial.

After the complexities and angst of Ghost and Joker (which remain my favorite stories and two of my best of 2017), King arrives as almost a light-hearted complement to the others, demonstrating that not everything in Powers has a dark side.   Here it’s more of lack of communication and a dose of fear over losing what each man does have of the other in their lives.  Dabney makes us understand King’s fear as well as Lincoln’s, just as she always does, with her ability to get under their skin and into their minds and hearts.

And it’s not just King and Lincoln but Melanie (and the rest of the gang that shows up here) that arrive as fully developed characters, believable and compelling by their very nature.  I flew through this story, enjoying the relationship dynamics, the hot sex and of course, the happy path to love and HEA.

Up next?  Why that would be Sin & Saint (Executioners #4) and their man the Sheriff.  What a ride that’s going to be.  I can hardly wait. Until that arrives, grab up King (Executioners #3) by J.M. Dabney for a wonderful, warmhearted romance. I highly recommend this story and series.  For all the interconnected series, check out the list below.

Cover art by Winterheart Design .  I’m so in love with these covers.  They match the men perfectly with just that right touch of grittiness and believability.

An Alisa Advent Release Day Review: A Gift of Family by Tami Veldura

Rating:  3 stars out of 5
Scott Burke has always desired a big family, but as a divorced single dad, all he has is his young daughter, Lexi. He pours himself into raising her, half-convinced he’ll never find what he’s looking for. When Brennan Price strolls into Scott’s life, he’d better have enough patience for both Lexi and Scott if he intends to stick around.
Brennan has a huge family and a successful career, but no one to call his own. Wooing Scott and his daughter is right up his alley, though, and he steps up to the challenge to prove he’s enough for both of them. His attraction to Scott is immediate, but he recognizes a family man when he sees one and hatches a plan to win Lexi over. Her handsome father is sure to follow….
This was an okay story.  I liked how Brennan wanted to woo both Scott and Lexi and his patience.  Their connection felt a bit forced and quick for Scott being a man that is supposedly cautious about bringing someone into their life he falls a but fast.  I thought Brennan seemed cute but didn’t feel as if I got the chance to know him.  For all their cautiousness and shyness the D/S feeling in the bedroom didn’t work for me, it was like they flipped a switch and it didn’t seem right for the characters.
Cover art by Paul Richmond.  This is the series cover for all the Stocking Stuffer Advent stories for 2017 and as such has nothing to do with the actual story.
