Its February, Where’s the Respect?

So its February and I thought I would look around for suitable quotes to herald in the second month of the Gregorian calendar.  Oh, what a bag of woe and complaints I found.

Let’s start with this.

“February is a suitable month for dying.  Everything around is dead, the trees black and frozen so that the appearance of green shoots two months hence seems preposterous, the ground hard and cold, the snow dirty, the winter hateful, hanging on too long.”
–  Anna Quindlen, One True Thin

How cheery!  Death, dead, black, dying….yep.  Eeyore has nothing on Anna Quindlen.  There are many more in that vein but I’m going to pass those by. I might have thought that about a couple of days ago but now?  I’m thaaaat much closer to March but more on that later.  Now how about this one, it totally cracks me up.

“Loud are the thunder drums in the tents of the mountains.
Oh, long, long
Have we eaten chia seeds
and dried deer’s flesh of the summer killing.
We are tired of our huts
and the smoky smell of our clothing.
We are sick with the desire for the sun
And the grass on the mountain.”
–  Paiute Late Winter Song

I can hear it now.  “Damn it I’m tired of deer jerky, you smell of bear fat, the hut stinks.  If I have to eat one more damn seed, I’m gone to puke.  Fat  Groundhog Who Runs Like Rock is looking pretty good to me right now. I want Spring!”   That’s really what that says.  See?  Not so different from the way many of us are feeling now.

Some see it as a mere stepping stone that must be passed over to get to March such as the next quote:

“February is merely as long as is needed to pass the time until March.”
–  Dr. J. R. Stockton

And so many that remark on the fact that while its our shortest month, it feels like forever, such as these:

“Even though February was the shortest month of the year, sometimes it seemed like the longest.”

― J.D. Robb

and almost word for word

“Even though February was the shortest month of the year, sometimes it seemed like the longest.”

― Lorraine Snelling

“February – the month of love..?!!
No wonder the shortest one in the calendar.”
― Dinesh Kumar Biran

That last, yep. Valentine’s Day. And the ones that like February?  Dreadful, at least not to my taste, such as this one:

“Wan February with weeping cheer,
Whose cold hand guides the youngling year
Down misty roads of mire and rime,
Before thy pale and fitful face
The shrill wind shifts the clouds apace
Through skies the morning scarce may climb.
Thine eyes are thick with heavy tears,
But lit with hopes that light the year’s.”
–  Algernon Charles Swinburne, A Year’s Carols: February

I much prefer the brevity of Robert Byrne’s short winter perspective.

“Winter is nature’s way of saying, “Up yours.””
–  Robert Byrne

I prefer to look at February as a time of transition, neither winter nor spring.  We have time to plan ahead and still enjoy the season we are currently in or  complain about it if that’s where the time takes you (see me last week when I was snowed in).  Its Black History month which has never been more needed given current race relations, Valentine’s Day which many have a love/hate relationship with, the Super Bowl, Groundhog Day and for a little piece of history, the Supreme Court of the United States met for the first time on February 1, 1790. Plus Abraham Lincoln was born this month. There’s a lot going on in February and still it gets no respect.

So how about a little, hell yeah, happy to see, you, February.  Plan a little, snuggle a little, write and read a little, enjoy it while its here. March is coming, so is Spring, Enjoy the sight of the Snow Junco below the feeders and the Winter Wren warbling merrily away before they leave. I will enjoy my February and plan some changes and read many more books.  I’ll leave you with one more poem (still that Paiute one remains my favorite):

February

February knows his fortune well,
Even in the bitterness of dawn
Breaking in the coldest hour of hell,
Revealing but the worst that must be borne.
Underneath the ice the passions sleep
Ablaze with all the beauty of their burning,
Rendering a richness that will keep
Yet warm within the cavern of his yearning.

Blurb

Determined to stay single, Dean Simpson and his best friend Ryan have been playing a game, where each man chooses a potential hook-up for the other, usually someone nothing like their usual type. But with Ryan now off the market, Dean agrees to one final round of the game and allows his friend to choose his toy for the evening.

Casper Mancuso is about as far from Dean’s type as he can get. Casper is pretty, flamboyant, and attention-seeking, but sexy with it. Dean decides one night can’t hurt, but when Casper makes it clear his aim is the same as Dean’s – to have one bit of fun and then move on – Dean finds himself surprisingly disappointed.

With both men keen to avoid a relationship at all costs, it seems there can be no chance for anything between them. And yet the pair are drawn to each other and despite some hurtful comments and a very public argument, they just can’t stay away from each other. Eventually Dean is forced to admit that the very antithesis of what he usually likes is exactly what he’s been waiting for.

My heart sank as one of the other trainers from the gym caught up to me. “Wait up, Dean. I’ll go with you.”

I glanced at Mark and nodded. “Okay.”

“Where are you headed?”

“Not sure yet. I just wanted some fresh air. Maybe Subway.” It was the first thing that came into my head, although I really didn’t fancy a sandwich.

“I could go for that. Meatball marinara. Mmm.”

“I like the tuna.”

“I always have cheese and slather it in ranch dressing, and get a cookie.” Casper’s words made me smile and I wondered if he’d be having Subway today. Shit.

“Are we eating in, or taking it back to work?” Mark pushed open the door and walked inside.

“Um, maybe sit outside here?” I followed him to the counter, lining up behind a family ordering an early lunch. Most of the tables both inside and outside were empty and I stared up at the menu board as I waited, even though I knew I’d order tuna. Mark bought a foot-long meatball marinara with cheese and salad and I requested a six inch with cheese, salad, and ranch dressing. As we sat down at a table outside the window, I looked around and caught sight of Casper, just yards away and heading right for us. Automatically I ducked my head and unwrapped my sandwich, hoping he wouldn’t see me. My heart thumped wildly and my dry mouth made me wish I’d ordered a drink.

“Are you okay?” Mark raised his eyebrows.

“Yeah.”

Casper entered Subway, apparently not having noticed me. I’d kick myself if I didn’t speak to him. I might not get another chance. The fact that he’d happened to turn up at this exact moment, when he could have gone anywhere, or not even taken a break at this time, was too much of a coincidence for me to throw away. Hesitating, I debated going into the shop to speak to him, or waiting for him to come out where Mark might hear. While I thought about it, Casper got his sandwich and came out again and then I had no choice. I jumped up quickly, scraping my chair noisily on the pavement, and his eyes immediately met mine. He halted, half in and half out of the door, then shuffled forward to get out of the way of someone trying to enter.

Mark looked up at me and frowned. “Dean?”

“I’ll be back in a minute.” I moved away from the table toward Casper, aware that only about six feet separated us from Mark. “Can I speak to you for a minute?”

“What about?” His eyes narrowed.

“I wanted to say sorry. I─”

“Don’t bother. Like we both said, it was a hook up.” His voice was much too clear and I glanced anxiously at Mark, who stared back at me with wide eyes.

“Casper…shh. Can we just…?”

“Don’t shush me!” Clutching his wrapped sandwich fiercely in one hand, he planted the other hand on his hip and glared. “I don’t know why you even bothered speaking to me! You slept with me for a bet, and we all know what your real type is. Don’t think I didn’t see you with that blond guy on Friday.”

“Fuck.” Grabbing his arm, I tugged him a few steps along the street until he wrenched free. “Thanks a fucking bunch. You just outed me to one of my workmates.”

“Oh!” His scowl vanished and his cheeks flushed. “Shit. I didn’t know. I’m sorry, Dean.”

“Forget it. Like you said, I shouldn’t have bothered.” Mortified, I turned away and went back to the table. Mark’s expression said it all. I didn’t need to hear anything he might have to say, but I listened anyway. Casper had already disappeared.

Meet the Author

Louise Lyons comes from a family of writers. Her mother has a number of poems published in poetry anthologies, her aunt wrote poems for the church, and her grandmother sparked her inspiration with tales of fantasy. Louise first ventured into writing short stories at the grand old age of 8, mostly about little girls and ponies. She branched into romance in her teens, and MM romance a few years later, but none of her work saw the light of day until she discovered FanFiction in her late 20s.

Posting stories based on some of her favorite movies, provoked a surprisingly positive response from readers. This gave Louise the confidence to submit some of her work to publishers, and made her take her writing “hobby” more seriously.

Louise lives in the UK, about an hour north of London, with a mad Dobermann, and a collection of tropical fish and tarantulas. She works in the insurance industry by day, and spends every spare minute writing. She is a keen horse-rider, and loves to run long-distance. Some of her best writing inspiration comes to her, when her feet are pounding the open road. She often races into the house afterward, and grabs pen and paper to make notes.

Louise has always been a bit of a tomboy, and one of her other great loves is cars and motorcycles. Her car and bike are her pride and joy, and she loves to exhibit the car at shows, and take off for long days out on the bike, with no one for company but herself.

A MelanieM Review: Danny’s Dragon (Tao of Love #1) by Sedonia Guillone

Rating:     3.75 stars out of 5

Danny's DragonA rugged, muscular cop.

A sexy computer genius.

Secret desires.

Brought together by a crime committed on a cold dark night.

From the moment they meet, their lives can never be the same again…

Wild and rugged Dave Pearce is haunted by the demons of his past. He’s done his best to make a life for himself after the devastation of his lover’s suicide years earlier, but the trauma has left its mark on his soul.

Danny Wong is what Dave considers a “nerdy Bruce Lee.” Handsome, refined, out of his league.

But that doesn’t matter.

Dave believes himself to be dangerous for any man who would love him. So he stays back in the shadows, letting the desire he harbors for the hot grad student remain unrequited.

Danny has demons of his own. Duty-bound to his family’s goals for him, he remains shy and closeted, contenting himself with his secret fantasies about the sexy Irish cop who patrols the campus building where Danny does his graduate work.

Until one freezing winter night…

Leaving the building, fate steps in and their paths cross in a new…deeper way. Neither man can turn back. Danny and Dave must face the demons rearing their heads with full force, or lose their chance at an epic love…

Years  ago I found Sedonia Guillone and read as many books of hers as I could find at the time.  Whether it was the Yakuzas of her White Tigers series or the Samurai in her historic m/m Flying Fish (Sword and Silk Trilogy 1), her stories, steeped in Japanese culture and lore, always enraptured me as did the complicated men and their romances.   Then recently, I was asked to be a part of a tour for a new book of hers and I was thrilled to see a novel of hers back in release.  Turns out there are several.  Long story short, I found Danny’s Dragon, the first story that Guillone wrote in 2006 in the m/m genre.  I wondered how it would hold up against the stories I remembered and the recent book just released.

The answer is surprisingly well.

Each chapter starts with a quotation from The Way of Life According to Lao Tzu, an important focus or thread that runs through the story.  Danny uses the poems as a way to center his life and as a shelter from his mother, someone we might call a “Tiger mom”, controlling, cold, who sees only one path for Danny, hers.  His father, who Danny loves, is sick and while not standing up for Danny directly, does so by redirection and other methods of bending but not yielding, a family trait he has passed on to his son.  Each new quotation points towards a new path to growth for David and Danny, if one or both choose to take it.

I have to admit, that for some readers, they might find the philosophy behind the Tao a bit obtuse at times (or like Dave sometimes just going “huh?”) but the quotations as well as the format grows on you as does the relationship between these two unlikely men.  Dave Pearce does have a haunted past, part of which is very much alive in his abusive drunk of a father.  But even more differently is their approach to life.  One has been taught to battle it out with his fists, the other to give and bend, seeing other paths.  How that disparity in outlook is handled fascinated me because I found it believable, even as Dave was giving voice to his frustrations and inability to understand Danny’s actions and perspective at the time (I got that perfectly).  But the beauty of the quotations and philosophy is such an integral part of their relationship and story that I found myself looking for more quotations after the story was done.  I’ll share a few of what I found at the end.

There are a few issues here, I have a hard time with insta love, although I could see these two men needing each other and fitting together perfectly.  I just wished it had been more of a HFN, it seemed to resolve a little too smoothly considering all their issues.  But for a first m/m  novel, the rough edges are much smoother than some I’ve seen and that storyline and all the surrounding elements (which come to be a trademark of hers) pulled me in and kept me glued to the story until it was completed.

It was also fascinating to see the love/relationships of abused, haunted men and Japanese themes get their start in an author’s career, to be able to trace back the men of ‘Acts of Passion’ and ‘Flying Fish’ back to ‘Danny’s Dragon’, their foundation couple in a narrative manner.  Its a great start.

I highly recommend this author and yes, this story.  Seek out her other books, especially if you are a fan of Japanese culture, the Yakuza or Samurai in love.   I am a fan of all three and will be revisiting those stories and the new ones coming out.

A Stella Review: Farm Fresh (Naked Organics #1) by Posy Roberts

RATING  4 out of 5 stars

Farm FreshJude Garrity visits the farmers market every Saturday. As an environmental engineering student, he’s curious about living off the grid and sustainable agriculture.

And one particular farmer.

Hudson Oliva has worked hard to support his commune, where queer people live without fear of harm or retribution. When Jude asks pointed questions about living there, Hudson realizes he needs to be honest about his home. Few people know what the farm is actually about, but Jude is insistent.

Jude moves to Kaleidoscope Gardens, however his sexual hang-ups make it hard to adjust. He’s an uptight virgin living among people who have sex freely and with multiple partners. When Jude finally loosens up, Hudson is flooded with emotions. Falling for Jude wasn’t part of Hudson’s life plan. But when vindictive rumors about the commune begin to spread, love might be all he has left.

I have to say I am usually not very comfortable with sex outside the relationship of my MCs and I was a little dubious when I read the blurb of Fresh Farm, but I lately discovered Posy Roberts and fell in love with her writing. So I wanted to give her new release a try.

I knew I couldn’t be so strict with this story, since the first pages where I met Hudson, one of MCs, enjoying a threesome. He lives in a commune and share his home (and his bed) with Leo and Charlie, he deeply loves both of them, but he is still looking for that one man who Hudson will fall in love with. The commune is also a farm and while selling its products at the local market, Hudson meets Jude, a (too) young engineering student.

Jude grew up with the idea of sex to be shared only between married couples as a way to procreate, he is still hunted by memories of his past and it’s really hard to let go and just live his new life. Years of verbal abuse left him shameful of sexual experiences. His moving to the commune will help Jude to finally overcome his limits and maybe fall in love.

The writing was really good, each sentence flew easily to me and I could feel every emotion the characters felt. I have to admit Farm Fresh left me craving for more. I’m not sure how the author will develop the series, if the next book will have still Jude and Hudson as MCs, or if there will be a new couple. I’m curious, because I really enjoyed the second characters too and I hope they will have their HEA too. There so much to explore!

Farm Fresh was a light  and peaceful story to me, maybe purposely made like that, but each character is beautifully layered with so many details and feelings. There is a lot going in the commune and the people that live it. Kaleidoscope Gardens is yes, a commune and. a place of love, so expect a lot of sex, in the open too, but always between people who love each other, and that was probably why the book conquered me.It’s different and it could possibly have gone in another way but I think the author did an awesome job.

Highly recommended!

Hudson Oliva didn’t expect the world to end with the new millennium, but his life did change forever on that New Year’s Eve. After his religious parents walk in on him with Zac in his bed, Hudson is sent to conversion therapy. The parents he returns home to after being cured aren’t the same people he’s known his entire life. They’re cold and withdrawn.

In order to survive, Hudson becomes an expert at lying while working hard to be the perfect son, yet his parents remain emotionally distant. He’s sure the pray-away-the-gay camp broke something inside him along with tearing his family apart. When his parents discover Hudson has continued seeing Zac for years, they demand he go back to the camp. Hudson has no choice but to run. Somehow he has to find a safe place, but he has to get out of Florida first.

I read Hudson short after Farm Fresh and it was really great to know more about him and his young years spent lying to his parents, the bad things he went through and his first meeting with Leo when, exhausted, he stumbled into Kaleidoscope Gardens, his salvation.

COVER ART by Natasha Snow. She is one of the most famous cover artist in the genre (and not only) and I like her style a lot. To me this cover reflects the story because it’s luminous and peaceful just as I pictured the commune.

Posy Roberts  sent another character,Hudson Oliva from her novel, Farm Fresh,  today to sit down for some questions. Welcome, Hudson  Help us get to know you a little better.

Q. What do you consider your greatest achievement?

I love to help people. Always have. When I lived at home, my Papi and I would help build Habitat for Humanity houses or cook for people at the homeless shelter. Giving back makes me feel like my life is worth something more. Living at Kaleidoscope Gardens, I get to help people every day doing various things. I fix broken parts around the commune, work in the gardens, and cook communal meals, and every single day I have people thanking me for helping them.

Q. If you could have any job or profession, what would it be?

I’m actually doing it. In the simplest terms, I’m a farmer. I grow plants from seedlings, harvest them, and sell them at the farmers market. That’s where I met Jude, which ended up being one of the best things to happen to me. I’m a handyman too, I suppose. I’m very good with my hands, which is good considering school wasn’t really my thing.

Q. What is your biggest regret?

Not going back home to confront my parents for what they did to me when they found out I was gay. I think it’s kept me living in the past. I tend to react by withdrawing when I get scared. I know that’s because my parents essentially abandoned me. It’s easier to push people away than to get hurt again. At least that’s what goes through my head when I freak out. So to go back and yell at my mom and papi about what they did to me… yeah, I think that would help fix a lot of my regrets over the years.

Q What is your favorite food?

My absolute favorite is Alfie’s cherry pie. It’s sweet and tart and perfect. It was one of the first things I ate when I arrived on Kaleidoscope Gardens’ soil. To me it’s the ultimate comfort food. It says home.

Q. Who is your hero?

Hands down, Leo. Leo took me in when I wandered onto the land, fed me Alfie’s pie, and gave me a home and a purpose at the commune. He’s seen me at my worst and my best, and he doesn’t let me get stuck in my bad habits. He knows all the skeletons in my closet and is always challenging me to better myself. And he’s a fantastic lover, on top of all that.

Thanks, Hudson.  That was terrific.  Now more about Farm Fresh…

“You wanted to know where I’m from,” Hudson said. Jude nodded but remained tight-lipped. “I grew up north of Miami in a small city. I couldn’t wait to get out, so I tried to hitch a ride to Seattle. Didn’t get that far.”

“How far did you get?” Jude looked surprised as he asked, so Hudson reached out and pressed his palm to the center of Jude’s chest.

“About five miles away. I’ve been here ever since.”

“What made you run? I mean… maybe that’s too personal.”

Hudson coasted his hand over the slight swell of Jude’s pec and thumbed over his nipple, which stood at attention, pert and flushed, like his lips and cheeks. It was a good color on him.

“My parents sent me away to one of those ‘pray away the gay’ places, which obviously didn’t work, but it probably saved my life since my mom had to haul Papi off me when she told him why I needed to go there. He had so much pride, and having a gay son wasn’t something he could live with. It was as if me being gay made him gay. I was accosted by religion and hatred for who I was from that day until I left, so I became an expert at being secretive and learned to lie through my teeth while living with them. My eighteenth birthday Papi and I fought, and I ended up with another black eye. I packed a bag and snuck out of the house while they were sleeping.”

“Did they call the cops or anything?”

Hudson shook his head and knew his smile was pathetic. He still held hope he and his father could reconcile. He knew Papi would be proud of him and what he’d accomplished on the commune. “I left a note and eventually let them know my address, but in all the years, I’ve gotten one letter.”

“I’ve talked to my parents twice since I left, and both times left me feeling shredded inside.”

“I’m sorry.” Hudson scooted closer and pulled Jude into a tight embrace. The feel of Jude’s warm skin against his own had Hudson’s body responding in no time flat. He kissed Jude’s neck and the sharp line of his jaw. He thrust his fingers into Jude’s spun-gold hair and drew their mouths together.

Jude moved his lips, pressing chaste kisses to Hudson’s, and then he snaked his arm between their bodies. Jude splayed his fingers across Hudson’s chest and pushed him away. He hung his head, looking down at the mattress in what appeared to be shame.

Hudson took the sting out of the rejection by thumbing over Jude’s bottom lip, shiny with saliva. “You have a delectable mouth, like it’s made for kissing.”

Jude laughed. “So do you.” Then he bit his lip and made brief eye contact before scooting back a few inches.

Excerpt

His phone beeped, alerting him that he had a new text message. It was from Ethan Kennedy, the defenseman the Storm had acquired before the trade deadline last spring. The rowdy Kennedy, who had a heavy New York accent and was a huge fan of the New York Rangers—a team Riley hated, by virtue of being a New Jersey Devils fan—had bunked with him for a few weeks during the finals. He’d gone back to New York after the Storm lost in the playoffs. Riley hadn’t been sure if he was coming back or not, but the text message indicated he’d just gotten back to town, and would Riley mind picking him up from the airport?

And oh, he got a cheaper rate by flying into Tampa, which was three hours away. Was that a problem? And one last thing. Riley didn’t need a roommate by any chance. Did he?

Riley looked around his apartment, which was nice and clean and quiet. Just like it always was, except for those few weeks last spring when Ethan was there. He was loud and messy and always in Riley’s space, left half-full cans of Pepsi everywhere, drank whiskeys with dubious-sounding names, and smoked like a chimney.

be there in 3 hrs, Riley texted and grabbed a few boxes of coconut water out of his fridge. The idea of coming home alone after games reminded him of those car rides in Wyoming, and he was getting tired of the silence.

A BJ Audio Review: Not Fade Away (Hell and High Water #3.5) by S.E. Jakes and Adam North (Narrator)

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Not Fade Away audiobookTruth or dare.

Ever since superspy Cillian moved into Prophet’s building, their game of Steal the Couch has been funny to Prophet, but a thorn in Tom’s side. Then Prophet gets bored one night during an ice storm and insists on playing another simple game with Tom: Truth or Dare. In exchange for one of Prophet’s truths, Tom steals the couch one last time.

But Prophet’s truths are never easy—Tom should know that by now—and this one raises questions neither of them quite know how to answer. In response, Tom finds himself laying claim to Prophet in the most basic way he knows how. And also finds that he doesn’t mind it in the least when Prophet returns the favor.

This one is entirely different than the others… it’s playful, fun and kinky without the usual action and guns. Considering this is largely a grouping of sexy interludes, the narrator did an exceptional job. The one thing that sorta bugged me in the narration was the way the “bebe” endearment was used… each time it sorta pulled me from the story. But totally just me, I think. Because he did an excellent job of making this a one-handed read.

The chemistry between Tom and Prophet was as combustible as even, and there was even a rare super sweet moment between them that was for me totally worth listening to the whole story just for that alone. Plus the secrets that are shared add just a bit of plot interest to the heat. Overall, more than anything, this little taste just left me wanting more. The final installment of Hell & High Water as well as the second installment of Dirty Deeds to learn more about Mal and Cillian.

Overall, this is an excellent audio series well worth listening to. The narrator stayed in character through. I dearly hope that the release of the four audios last month means that the rest of these series will finally be released this year. Crossing my fingers.

The cover by L.C. Chase fits those for the previous, it’s very sexy and it focuses on the leather band and the tattoo beneath. Love it.

Its Country Love Time with Posy Robert’s Farm Fresh (character interview, excerpt and giveaway)

FarmFresh-f-1

Farm Fresh by Posy Roberts
Release Date: January 28, 2016

Goodreads Link
Publisher: Labyrinth Bound Press
Cover Artist: Natasha Snow

Posy Roberts  sent Jude Garrity from her novel, Farm Fresh, in her place today to sit down for some questions. Welcome, Jude.  Help us get to know you a little better.

Jude Garrity

Q. What is your biggest fear?
I’m afraid of going too far and not knowing I’ve crossed some invisible boundary until it’s too late. See, I grew up in a very strict household where my parents essentially controlled everything about my day. Seriously, everything. They even tried to control how I thought and felt about stuff. It wasn’t until I left home that I realized I had to draw my own lines in the sand and figure out my own morals rather than trying to filter my world through their messed up way of thinking. I’m still working on that.

Q. What is your most prized possession?
I don’t have many possessions. They all fit in my car when I moved to Kaleidoscope Gardens, and I drive a tiny hybrid. Maybe my guitar. But really, the most important thing to me isn’t tangible. It’s my freedom to be who I want to be.

Q. What do you enjoy doing on your day off?
There aren’t many days off now that I live on the commune, and I really like it that way. I’m trying to finish my degree in environmental engineering, so I’m currently swamped. But if I could do anything for an entire day, I’d want to spend my time with Hudson, maybe walking around the commune, working on little projects here and there, and taking some time out to get down and dirty. I just want to spend time with him on the farm, to be honest.

Q. Your best childhood memory?
I grew up on a diary farm, and one year I got to bottle raise and calf, whose mom rejected her. I was homeschooled, so I did as much of my schoolwork outside with Clover as I could. It got me away from my parents, even if it did add a whole lot of chores onto my day for months. It was worth it.

Q Where do you hope to be in five years?
That’s a hard question. I got away from under the thumb of my parents only four years ago, and a lot has happened since. I’m truly just starting my life and figuring out who I am now that the commune has helped me loosen up. I’d like to be on the commune living with Hudson, Charlie, and Leo, but I’m not sure if I’ll feel the pull of graduate school or not. The commune fulfills most of my needs, but who knows about in five years. No matter what, I want to make a difference in the world. If I could keep working on environmental issues from the commune, I don’t see any reason to leave. Especially if Hudson’s still here. If he leaves, I’ll follow him.

Thanks, Jude.  That was terrific.  Now more about Farm Fresh…

Blurb

Jude Garrity visits the farmers market every Saturday.

Jude moves to Kaleidoscope Gardens, however, his sexual hang-ups make it hard to adjust.

Connection (Evan and Jeremy #1) by Brigham Vaughn

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Brigham Vaughn here today to talk about her  novel, Connection, and the inspiration behind it.  Welcome, Brigham.  Tell our readers about Connection and the series its linked to.

When I began writing the novella “Equals” I never dreamed that almost two years later it would become a 4-novella series with a 2-novel spin off. I loved Russ and Stephen–the couple in the original series—but Evan and Jeremy slowly but surely stole my heart.

Jeremy was a side character in the first book. An ex of Stephen’s whose crippling car accident fifteen years prior set Stephen up for a host of relationship issues and created one of the main conflicts between him and Russ in “Equals”.

Evan was a throwaway character, originally written into “Partners” to give Stephen’s hometown of Putnam a more sympathetic face and depth.  He was a lost, lonely young man, aching to find gay men to look up to and found in role models in Russ and Stephen. Russ caught a glimpse of that and a very tentative friendship was formed, leading Evan toward a future in Atlanta.

By the time I finished “Partners” I knew I needed to tell Evan’s story. My betas strenuously agreed.  As I tossed around ideas of who I would pair Evan with, Jeremy popped into my head. At first it seemed preposterous; Jeremy was thirty-six, mentally and physically scarred from the accident, and bitter and jaded by the idea of dating. Twenty-one-year-old Evan—despite his shyness and insecurities—was wide-eyed and optimistic. He longed for a relationship and the security it would bring. They had nothing to offer each other.

Except, I’d just written a May/December romance where the age difference between Russ and Stephen worked. They balanced each other out.  What if Jeremy’s brashness was the perfect counterpoint to Evan’s shyness? What if Evan’s optimism softened Jeremy’s pessimism? What if they gave each other the strength to work through their own fears and insecurities? What if they were better together than they could ever be apart?

With those thoughts, the idea of the story fell into place. The characters fit together like puzzle pieces in my head. It wouldn’t be an easy road to get them to that point, but once I did, I knew they’d be perfect for each other.

The first book, “Connection,” was released last October. The second half is called “Trust” and it is available today.  The books will take you from Evan’s arrival in Atlanta and through the next year of his life as he and Jeremy meet and build a relationship.

If you’re new to the “Equals” world, you can read “Connection” and “Trust” as standalone novels.  But if you’d like to start at the very beginning, pick up a copy of “Equals”. It is available for free.

I have no doubt you’ll love all four men as much as I do.

Blurb

After a lifetime of being told he’s worthless, shy, sheltered Evan Harris is forced out of the closet and kicked out of his home. Friends in Atlanta give him a place to stay while he gets on his feet, but despite his eagerness to explore the city, it isn’t exactly what he expected.

Physically and emotionally scarred from a devastating car accident, Jeremy Lewis struggles to reconcile the brash, outgoing man he used to be with the social recluse he’s become.

Loneliness draws them to each other, but a strong mutual attraction isn’t enough to overcome their pasts. In order to be together, Evan must discover his own worth and Jeremy must trust someone to see past his scars.

“So how do you know the grooms?” The man he was pretty sure he recognized from the sporting goods store dropped onto the stool to his left, and Evan jerked, spilling some of his drink on the bar.

“Oh, um, I met Russ and Stephen last fall when they were in Stephen’s hometown. I worked at the funeral home there when they buried his father.”

The guy frowned. “So you’re just visiting Atlanta then?”

Evan shook his head. “No. I moved to Atlanta in February. When we met last fall, Russ was nice enough to kind of”—he struggled to find the right words as he mopped up the spill—“take me under his wing, I guess. Once I moved here, Russ and Stephen helped me get settled and find the guts to go off on my own.”

He chuckled and nudged Evan’s elbow with his. “I dunno, seems like you must have had some guts in the first place.”

“Maybe.” Evan blushed. “I’d like to think so.”

“How do you like Atlanta?”

“It’s lonely,” Evan said, surprising himself with his candor. The drink he was working on must’ve loosened his tongue. “I mean, it’s fine, I guess. I just haven’t met anyone yet.” In his head, Atlanta had been a gay man’s paradise where there would be available guys everywhere he looked, but it hadn’t worked out that way. At least, not for him.

“Amen, kid.” The guy raised his glass and clinked it against Evan’s. “What’s your name, anyway?”

“Evan Harris.” He glanced at the guy out of the corner of his eye.

“Nice to meet you. Jeremy Lewis.” He narrowed his eyes at Evan. “Wait a minute, you came into Johnson’s sporting goods a while ago, didn’t you? You needed running shoes, I think.”

“I … yeah,” Evan replied, shocked but flattered that the guy—Jeremy—had remembered him. “I did. Russ suggested I go there, actually. Um, thanks for your help, by the way. The new shoes are much better. The fit specialist did a great job.”

Jeremy grinned. “Glad to hear my employees know what they’re doing.”

Evan wasn’t sure what else to say about running shoes that wouldn’t make him sound like an idiot, but he didn’t want Jeremy to stop talking to him, so he changed the subject. “How do you know them?”

“Stephen and Russ? I just met Russ a few months ago, but Stephen’s my ex.”

“Really?” Evan gaped at him for a moment before all the pieces fell into place. Stephen had mentioned his ex’s car accident. That explained the limp and the scar. “Oh.”

“Mmmhmm. Stephen’s always had a thing for younger guys. We met when I was twenty, and he was … oh, must have been about thirty-two, thirty-three, maybe? Hell if I can remember. It’s been fifteen years.”

Which meant Jeremy was in his mid-thirties now. Up close, Evan could see the lines around his eyes when he smiled. Evan liked them.

“You’re not jealous of Russ?” he blurted out, then bit his lip, hoping Jeremy wasn’t offended.

“It’s complicated,” Jeremy said with a sigh as his lips twisted in a bitter smile. “I know Russ is a hell of a lot better for Stephen than I ever was, and I’m glad they’re happy together. It’s … it’s not that I want to be with Stephen, and, hell, I’m not a relationship kinda guy, but something about seeing them together makes me envious, you know?”

“Yeah, I know.” Evan sighed.

Jeremy nudged him with his elbow again. “Come on, kid, I’m sure you can’t have any trouble picking up guys.”

Evan sputtered, nearly choking on his drink and wondering how the guy knew he was gay. Am I obvious? he wondered. “Umm, I haven’t exactly ever done it before …” he muttered into his glass, embarrassed to confess his lack of dating experience but unable to hold his tongue.

“Don’t tell me you’re a virgin?” Jeremy’s gaze was disbelieving, and the tips of Evan’s ears went red-hot.

“Okay, I won’t then.” Evan tilted his drink back and shook an ice cube into his mouth, crunching down on it. He refused to look at the guy next to him for fear he’d turn tomato red.

Jeremy whistled quietly. “Kid, if you go into a gay club it’ll be like waving a steak at starving tigers. They’ll be all over you.”

“I think you’ve had too much to drink,” Evan protested. “I’m nothing special.”

“Oh, Jesus, you have to be kidding me.” Jeremy stood with a groan. “Okay, unless you’ve got somewhere you need to be, I want you to come have a seat with me at a booth over there. My leg is fucking killing me, and we need to have a long talk about why you don’t realize you’re the kind of pretty little twink who makes gay men cream their jockstraps.”

Evan blushed, but he followed Jeremy toward the cozy booths anyway, embarrassed, terrified, and completely intrigued by the gorgeous guy who had called him pretty.
