A MelanieM Review: Boy Next Door (Hot Off the Ice #5) by A. E. Wasp

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Hockey superstar Joey Luciano has always been good at being whatever people needed him to be. The fans want a good-looking fast-living party boy? Enter ‘the Looch,’ Joey’s carefully created public persona. But the cracks in his mask are starting to show, and he’s begun to lose touch with who he really is. It’s going to take someone who’s been there from the very beginning, to help him find his way home.

Coach Liam O’Reilly always had a very clear picture of what his life should look like. Falling in love with the infuriating, passionate, stubborn, and endlessly fascinating boy next door was not part of the plan. But when Liam’s carefully constructed life fell apart one Christmas Eve, Joey Luciano was there to pick up the pieces. Now Liam can’t stop wanting him.

The passion blazing between them on the ice and behind closed doors could leave both of them badly burned. But through the smoke, Liam can see glimpses of a future brighter than any he’d imagined, a future worth risking his career and reputation for, if only he is brave enough to reach for it.

But Joey’s got a secret he’s keeping from everyone. If it gets out, it could be the end of everything.

I really enjoyed the Boy Next Door (Hot Off the Ice #5) by A. E. Wasp.  It has so many elements I love in a contemporary romance, starting off with hockey players and hockey coaches in love combinations.  Or just a hockey element.  That always draws me in.  Wasp also has another aspect to this series and story I adore.  Large families that support the main characters!

Families easily identifiable by location (Boston), ethnicities (Irish and Italian), long association (neighbors), and even intertwined relationships.  This extended main cast is a huge factor in connecting the reader to the character of Joey Luciano (the Italian family) and Liam O’Reilly (the Irish one),  In a totally current and hilarious format, we often see the family members communicating with each other via group text.  It’s never overdone, totally funny, and very realistic.  It’s has the feel of family and truth.  And it brought these people and their lives right into my heart.

Joey, “the Looch” Luciano, is a 25 year old  with a lot of issues. On the outside, he’s let this “Looch” character he’s created take over his life (brash, outgoing to the  extreme that it seems like he’s hogging the media and outshining his teammates.  No one is happy with him, including himself.  On the inside it’s worse.  Wasp has created Joey as a insecure person, low self esteem to the point that he seeks approval from every source and everyone without asking himself why he needs it so.  This is an enormous issue, obviously.  Not his only one. On top of this Joey is dealing with the fact that he has loved Liam since he can remember, a love that he has never looked at what that meant.  Why?  Because he shrinks from being called gay or even bisexual.  Which imo is totally misused here with regards to Joey.

Joey is someone who has lacked self examination for most of his life and it’s not until he gets involved with Liam that he smacks into some hard realities for himself.  At about 51 percent, we get these musing from Joey…

“What did people see when they looked at him? Could they tell he was having sex with a guy? Probably not. He looked as normal as Paul and Robbie. And he wasn’t gay gay. If anything he was bisexual like Liam.”

There are so many flags in those sentences that show exactly how messed up Joey is over not only his sexuality but homosexuality in general.  Being gay isn’t “normal”?  He also has issues with femme versus masc. And as is worked out down the story, Joey really doesn’t enjoy sex with women, so no, not bisexual.  Yes, some of this flags get addressed, not as many as I wished but a lot.

There are so many broken layers to Joey, it’s just one right after enough. Panic attacks, health issues, and more that need to be seriously addressed. Are all given the depth of attention I would wish or deserve? Perhaps not but they aren’t blown off either. Believable, authentic cracks in this man.  Kudos to A.E. Wasp for creating such a character.

Liam is a strong character, older by 10 years than Joey.  I liked him and their relationship but honestly wondered if the author was going to use their hot, and admittedly kinky sex life as a bandaid for all of Joey’s deep problems.  Thankfully, the  answer is no.  Wasp let me wonder about that, while I enjoyed Joey and LIam working out their relationship and then gave me everything I hoped for in the ending of this story. That included my Washington Caps winning the Stanley Cup this year!  And therapy for Joey.  Win win.

The humor here had me cackling!  Whether it’s Knock Knock jokes or Liam’s younger brother Patrick trying to get Liam to switch out his posh furniture for a huge leather sectional that all the young hockey players can come over and watch TV on saying”

“It’s the traditional furnishings of our people!”

Well, this book and dialogue crackles with fun, the knowledge of what it is like to be young, in love, or a hockey player, or to just do dumb things.  And all of the above.

Yes, plenty of angst too.

If I also have a complaint, its the actual lack of hockey.

We get headlines, sports feeds,  but  little actual ice time.  These men are passionate about ice and hockey.  So where is the time on the ice?  Where is the sense of team?

We get little of that except towards the very end in the important game.  I wish so badly we had had lots more of that action throughout the story.  Then we could understand why Joey and Liam’s actions carried the weight of the love of ice behind them that they did.  I felt that was missing because we never really saw Joey on ice for the majority of the book.  We were told about it but never actually “felt” it through the character. And I felt that was a mistake.

But did I love this story?  Yes I did.  I thought the author did a tremendous job with the characters, actualizing a man on the brink of a life change for himself and letting us travel some of the journey with him.  Scary, messy, not totally complete, a work in progress as they say.  I think Joey would agree with that and be happy.  So would Liam and the rest of the two families.

I definitely look for more in this series.  I recommend this one for all lovers of contemporary romance and hockey and even a little love of spanking!

“Hey,” Joey said, looking up from his phone as Liam fell into the bathroom. “Took you long enough. I’ve been in this fucking bathroom for ten minutes. It’s not that nice. One of those for me?”

“Fucking hell,” Liam said.

Those were the first words he’d spoken to Joey since Christmas Day. Jerk. Stupid gorgeous jerk.

”Okay, then.” Joey reached for one of the shot glasses and downed it, coughing a little from the tequila burn. He’d been expecting whiskey. “Tequila?” Bad things happened when they drank tequila.

Liam nodded and poured the other shot down his throat.

“Gina?”

“Who else?”

Who else but his big sister would do that? Of course, he’d known they were planning on trapping him in the bathroom. He’d also known Liam would do what they wanted, too. The O’Reilly-Luciano double-team had a ninety-five percent success rate.

He’d gone along with it because someplace, not even that deep inside, he desperately wanted to see Liam again. To see if Liam would still have the same effect on him as he had since puberty. Joey licked the last drop of alcohol off his lips, feeling a tingle of lust when Liam dropped his gaze to Joey’s mouth. Yeah. Still, the same effect. Stupid, good-looking smug bastard.

Liam set his glass on the counter with a thud, and then closed the distance between them, forcing Joey to look up to meet his eyes. Sometimes Joey really hated being four inches shorter than him.

“Nice outfit,” Liam said taking in the remains of Joey’s hastily-constructed pirate costume; red and black striped nylon pants ending in a ragged cuff just below the knee, black patent-leather Doc Martin boots, and a wide gold sash tied around his waist. He’d lost his shirt somewhere in the club. The way Liam couldn’t tear his eyes away from Joey’s tattoos made the loss of the two hundred dollar shirt totally worth it.

Liam picked up the end of the sash, sliding the silky material through his fingers. “How come every time I see you, you’re wearing some kind of costume?” Last time they’d met, Joey had been dressed as Santa.

Liam, of course, was his normal GQ self in dark trousers, a white dress shirt, and one of his vast collection of purple ties. The perfect simplicity of his clothes making everyone else look like they were trying too hard.

“How come every time I see you, you’re overdressed?” Joey asked.

Liam ran his hand through his thick red hair. “At least I’m not wandering around half-naked, letting everybody and their brother get their eyes all over me.”

Joey’s jaw dropped. “Excuse me?”

Liam scowled. “It’s a snake pit out there. I got groped half a dozen times walking here.”

Joey leaned back against the water-splattered sink counter. He crossed his arms over his chest. “Your point is?”

Liam stepped close enough that their thighs brushed. Dropping his hand heavily on Joey’s shoulder, he watched transfixed as his thumb traced the curve of Joey’s collarbone. “My point is, that maybe I don’t like the idea of you getting pawed at by a room full of drunks and puck bunnies.”

Joey knocked Liam’s hand away. He had to be fucking kidding. “Tough shit.” Joey pushed himself upright, poking Liam in the center of his (distractingly firm) chest, hard enough to make him take a step backward. “You got no right to tell me what to do or not to do.”

BOOK BLAST SCHEDULE

Read Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words’ review here.  We highly recommend it.

Hosted by Gay Book Promotions

It’s November and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

It’s November

November has finally arrived here.  It came with blustery winds and a drop in temperatures!  Almost overnight the leaves changed in color and our Indian summer vanished and fall arrived with a crispness to the air and that greyness in the skies.   All those trick or treaters just got in under the weather wire here and had a wonderful time.  Yes the  hoards descended!

But now its quiet, the winds howling and snatching the falls leaves up and away.  Again, a wonderful night to be reading. Only the foxes, raccoons, deer, and owls at play.

We had some great comments and recommendations for scary titles and  books so  lets finish up and get the winners names out.  As I  happily scarf down leftover Halloween candy (always buy the good stuff), the winners of the What Books go Boo for You Giveaway are H.B. and Purple Reader!  Congratulations to you both!  Contact Stella, Principessa of the Giftcards for yours.  We will finish up with some last minute recs for scary stories from P.R.:I’ve got a few left over recs that I enjoyed and thought others might too:

From Purple Reader:

Did I mention spirits? How about a couple series about paranormal investigators:
HELLSINGER series (FISH & GHOSTS, DUCK DUCK GHOSTS) by Rhys Ford
– and this one starts off in a Charming way:
A CHARM OF MAGPIES series by K.J. Charles
– On the other end, a shadowy, savage dystopia:
FALLOCAUST series by Quil Carter
– If necrophiliacs are your thing, or aren’t:
COLD FINGERS by Amy Spector
– I haven’t read them all, and not all are queer themed, but the author is iconic:
THE BOOKS OF BLOOD Vols. 1-6 by Clive Barker

Now for this week, an old favorite of mine and maybe yours is back.  I’m reviewing their third book in Ethan Day’s Summit City series called Life In Union (Summit City #3) by Ethan Day. Yep! Boone is back!  It’s hilarious! Sno ho’s and all.  If you aren’t familiar, grab up the first two and get ready for this one.  It’s a doozy.  A terrific M/M Historical from Eli Easton, The Lion and the Crow, that I read a long time ago, came alive again, in the audio version.  Never heard that narrator before.  He’s amazing.  Plus I have to mention that I’m also reviewing the next in the Pinx Video series from Marshall Thornton, Late Fees, a must read too.

There is also hockey, shifters, holiday stories and more coming up this  week so  don’t miss a day of it.  The countdown begins.

Happy November everyone!  Happy Reading.

Liminal Sky: Book Two

Earth is dead.

Five years later, the remnants of humanity travel through the stars inside Forever, a living, ever-evolving, self-contained generation ship. When Eddy Tremaine and Andy Hammond find a hidden world-within-a-world under the mountains, the discovery triggers a chain of events that could fundamentally alter or extinguish life as they know it, culminate in the takeover of the world mind, and end free will for humankind.

Control the AI, control the people.

Eddy, Andy, and a handful of other unlikely heroes—people of every race and identity, and some who aren’t even human—must find the courage and ingenuity to stand against the rising tide.

Otherwise they might be living through the end days of human history.

When I finished The Stark Divide, the first novel in J. Scott Coatsworth’s science fiction trilogy, I knew I was into something extraordinary.  Not only was it highly imaginative, but the science was there as well as the emotional, mental, and physical elements from the characters (and  pulled from the readers) that went along with the death of a home world and the launching of a vessel for space exploration and the saving of the human race.  That story has it all.  Intrigue, AIs, a magnificent space vessel  called Forever that was home to the remnants of humanity and at the end the introduction of a familiar villainy.   I was hopelessly lost  and hopelessly addicted.  There was  romance in a place where gender plays an increasingly lesser role. But romance is not the main factor here.  It’s the survival of Forever and humanity that’s at stake and that’s where we pick up in The Rising Tide.

As I have stated before, I’m prone to reading author’s introductions so you all know that I started with J. Scott Coatsworth’s here.  He tells the story of the titles of the novels, how they came about as well as the overall one for the trilogy, Liminal Sky.  In The Rising Tide we dive into the true meaning of that in epic proportions!

There is not any way to discuss individual characters within this novel in a review, especially for The Rising Tide.  There are simply far too many important main characters, scads of them really.  Each and every one has a different, startling role to play within this mind boggling science fiction tale.  How do you highlight Andy and leave out Marissa?  You don’t.  To discuss how beautifully each character is created would take up gobs up space and quite frankly I’d rather you all read the book.  There are simply no throwaway characters here, even ones that make brief appearances are used to high emotional impact.

There are also some very dark moments for the people here and that comes through science and it’s misuse, something they thought they had left back on Earth.

There are moments when I wept, pages of high anxiety and suspense, times when I went as limp as a noodle when momentarily the action went slack, and yes, sniffled again when it all came back together in an astonishing climax!  What a wild narrative ride this was!  I loved every word of it.  The author did an immaculate job here and I applaud him.

The Rising Tide is the middle or transitioning story of the Liminal Sky trilogy.  The term liminal can mean occupying both sides of a boundary or a threshold, the initial stages of transitioning which is what is happening here.  The people are transitioning away from the Old Earth ways and heading finally towards whatever future lies ahead, what they find, what they make as they voyage through space on Forever.  Through a journey of adventure, horror, love, sacrifice, science, even death,  J. Scott Coatsworth delivers an epic tale of transition.

There’s one book left to go.  I cannot wait to read it.

Earth is dead.   Let’s find out what J. Scott Coatsworth has in store for humanity in the last story in the Liminal Sky trilogy.    What a magnificent two novels to date!  I highly recommend them both.  They must be read in the order they are written.  Then meet me here as we eagerly await the release of the third.

Cover Artist: Aaron Anderson.  I love these cover.  This  one is absolutely gorgeous and is a great representation of an element of the story.

EXCERPT

“What are you doing, Mathieu?” Xander’s tone serious as he lifted his chin up with a finger.

“What we should have done years ago.” Matt’s voice was soft as he continued to lave Xander’s chest.

“But…” Xander tried to push himself back to put space between them.

“No, buts I know. I almost lost both of you.” Matt interrupted, pulling him back. “You don’t know what it was like when they brought you home.” Matt hissed through clenched teeth. Xander held still, and Matt looked up at him, his gaze piercing Xander’s. Matt bared his soul and showed him all the pain he was holding back with just one look into his usually vibrant eyes. Xander leaned down, his heart almost breaking at the thought of hurting Matt this way and he ran his tongue over his lips softly and kissed him tenderly.

“If something happens to me…” Fear of Matt dying because of him constricted his throat.

Matt sighed. “I know, and I accept that. I had a lot of time to think about life without you, and it’s not pretty. Even though I have many more years ahead of me, you’ll have to watch me grow old eventually. I don’t want that either. I want this right here”—Matt waved a finger between him and Xander—” me in your arms, your lips on mine, your smile to brighten my day and the crazy dragon in the other room to drive both of us nuts for at least the next millennia.” He pointed back behind Xander.

Matt cupped Xander’s face in his hands bringing his head down close to his. “You are my heart, and I love you with every bit of my being.” Stray tears mixed in with the water running down the sides of Matt’s face. “Will you be my mate and claim me as yours for eternity?”

Xander saw the love and determination reflecting at him in Matt’s eyes. He had never really thought about that before. They’d always been so caught up in the here and now that he hadn’t given much thought to the many years before them. Seeing the love and pain in Matt’s eyes broke his heart and he knew then that the thought of watching him die before him would break him.

Each of the stories in Liminal Sky explores that future through the lens of a generation ship, where the line between science fiction and fantasy often blurs. Unique Excerpt

Zombie Mountain

Eddy led them down the tunnel toward the enemy’s lair. Or at least that’s how he pictured it—like something from an old superhero tri dee. The mountain they were walking under would have a huge cavern entrance in the shape of a skeletal maw, jagged teeth above and below dripping with water—or maybe blood—threatening anyone who dared enter. Dead eye sockets peering out at the world.

That’s how one always knew it was the villain’s lair.

The reality seemed a lot more mundane. There were no markers, other than the subtle bits of world crafting they had found when they entered the tunnel.

He was a little worried, though. This cavern had no side branches either. While that was good for them, assuming the marauders hadn’t sealed them off after they passed like they’d done at the cavern entrance, it also made them easy targets. There was nowhere to hide if they should run into enemy forces coming from the other direction.

The weight of the rock above them weighed heavily on him, as did the oppressive silence.

Something shifted.

It took him a moment to figure out what it was. Eddy pulled the others to a halt and pointed to his ear. There it was again. A definite clang clang clang.

They moved more slowly.

Soon the tunnel brightened. A soft glow came from up ahead, lighting their way. After another three or four minutes, he could see the end of the tunnel at last, but his eyes hadn’t adjusted to the new light yet.

They edged up to it. As they got close, he gestured for them to get on the ground and crawl the last bit of the way.

Colin grimaced.

Eddy mouthed, “Sorry.” It was probably hard on the old man.

He moved forward on his hands and knees and peered over the edge. “Holy shit.”

The inside of the mountain was hollow, or had been hollowed out. Someone had filled it with glowing plants, creating a virtual Vernian jungle underground.

Huge stone columns reached up from earth to sky—or in this case, from Forever to cavern ceiling. Above, the vault of it glowed in bright blue patches… moss? Or something else?

In the middle of the jungle stood several enormous trees and a wide lake.

Eddy halfway expected to see a brontosaurus lift its head from the water, or to look up and see pterodactyls flying overhead. There were some birds—seagulls, like the ones they’d recently introduced over Lake Jackson a couple years ago. Strange.

In the middle of it all, near the lake, was a village, if you could call it that, made up of primitive wooden huts with thatched roofs.

There were several hundred people down there in the cavern too—adults and children—each one working industriously and silently, harvesting fruit, trimming plants, building dwellings.

“There’s something wrong,” Andy whispered.

“You mean besides there being an entire hidden world under this mountain?”

She nodded. “Look closely at the people.”

He watched them for a while. Sure, they were industrious. There was nothing wrong with that.

“No one’s talking.” It was Shandra, who had edged up on his other side.

He looked around. She was right. Not a word was said by any of the people he could see close by. Not only that, but they hardly interacted at all.

Eddy shivered, and his hand slipped unconsciously to the hilt of his long knife. “It’s Zombie Mountain.” The weekly tri dee serial had run for almost a decade and was eerily similar to the scene in front of him now. Except the zombies hadn’t been particularly good builders or gardeners. “What the hell’s going on?”

Author Bio

Scott lives between the here and now and the what could be. Indoctrinated into fantasy and sci fi by his mother at the tender age of nine, he devoured her library. But as he grew up, he wondered where the people like him were.

He decided it was time to create the kinds of stories he couldn’t find at Waldenbooks. If there weren’t gay characters in his favorite genres, he would remake them to his own ends.

His friends say Scott’s brain works a little differently – he sees relationships between things that others miss, and gets more done in a day than most folks manage in a week. He seeks to transform traditional sci fi, fantasy, and contemporary worlds into something unexpected.

A Rainbow Award winning author, he runs Queer Sci Fi and QueeRomance Ink with his husband Mark, sites that bring queer people together to promote and celebrate fiction reflecitng their own reality.

A MelanieM Review: Green Death by Madeleine Ribbon

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

For ninety years, the Exclusion Zone has been walled off from the rest of the country. The neighborhood—once a hotbed of political revolution—is now crumbling. Poison from the great catastrophe still hangs in the air. It taints every living thing that breathes it in. It causes rages, great bursts of violence that can’t be controlled. And that makes living within the walls incredibly difficult. But the descendants of the catastrophe survive, and the resistance hasn’t died.

As poison master to the Oligarch, Tryg Sant knows a lot of things others shouldn’t. But when he discovers his family’s darkest secret, his brother tries to kill him.

When Tryg’s lover pushes him out of a helicopter and into the Exclusion Zone, Tryg finds himself trapped in a dangerous new world, entirely different from the one he expects. Now he has to learn to survive nearly-feral humans and his own disintegrating mind. Luckily, he’s found an ally in Riot, a potential lover and one of the victims of the Green Death…

I’m familiar with this author through her Faire Folk series, which I loved, btw.  But those books did not prepare me for the dark power and narrative fire that I found in Green Death by Madeleine Ribbon, a dystopian novel that is truly formidable and amazing.

Set in a post apocalyptic world, the setting is an  broken America, a large part now run by a power conglomeration of families, democracy a faint echo of the past.  A foul chemical disaster of catastrophic proportions killed millions and created a sector now known as the Exclusion Zone where a menacing and genetically deadly green fog hovers over the area.  Those living within its walls are forever changed and are known as “Greenies”.  The whites of their eyes changed to green, their genes modified by the chemicals, as is their behavior and physicality…new strengths and more…for the ones that survive.  But  also more pain to live with.

Those living outside?  Look upon those inside as beasts, things  now apart from the human race, unable to control themselves and their baser instincts, Vile animals, less than human certainly.   Definitely creatures to be kept apart by the wall that now separates the two areas and groups.  And fog.

Madeleine Ribbon has created an incredible story.  Her world building is dark, compelling, and given our current state of global affairs and environmental fragility, frightening.  We start off the story with Tryg.  A young member of the ruling family, he’s a master poisoner and has been for most his life (working with the menagerie of venomous/poisonous creatures and making poisons since he was 8).  It’s been his role in his family, not by choice, however, and, trying to make a new path for himself and his family will change everything for him.

Tryg is quite the character as he undergoes tremendous changes over the course of this story.  Changes in emotional, mental, and yes, physical state.  His entire outlook, his perception is taken, shaken, and remade given the events and his experiences. And it’s through  Tryg, that we experience it all as well.  We are intimately connected with him through the power of Ribbon’s ability to pull us into this man’s inner turmoil and make it ours.  We feel his hopes, shattered dreams, and then watch it start to be reborn once more.  And others along with him.

If you are looking for romance, this is probably not the story for you.  Love yes, romance no.  Without going into too much depth because there’s just so much to this element in the novel, but part of the effect of the “green fog” is that a person’s baser instincts control their actions.  First actions upon hearing someone speak or move will not be rational thought.  Instead it will be to kill, to rape, to beat, or if unlucky to run….depending upon your triggers. A large percentage obviously don’t make it to adulthood under these conditions.  Ribbon has also created layered societies within the Exclusion Zone that I found fascinating.  Honestly?  My only complaint is that I didn’t wander around enough in this wild wounded sector that the author has created.  It’s scary, weird, and addicting.  I wanted to know more of the history of what happened and the people that survived there.  Especially those that passed the tests.  Those tests!  Something else so unbelievably haunting and real.  No not giving those away.

Anyhow, back to no romance.  Within such a world, how could there possibly be any such thing as romance?  There can’t and isn’t.  But there can be a type of love and hope.   And it isn’t who you think it will be.  This book has so many shocks and surprises in store for its reader.  The choices the author makes from the Oligarch to the rebels, not a narrative wrong turn is made.  It’s often dark, frequently violent and scary, but always gripping, never letting the reader go from a story that keeps you glued to each and every word until it’s over.

This book is beautifully written, the characters are fully realized, the entire novel has great imagination, and the world building is incredible.  It’s  exactly what I want in my  stories, delivered 100 percent!

If you love science fiction, if you love stories about dystopian societies Green Death by Madeleine Ribbon is absolutely a book for you.  I highly recommend it.  I would love to see more in this universe and hope the author is listening.

Cover Artist: Fiona Jayde.  Great cover.  Depicts the poisonous fog that envelopes the sector and the character perfectly.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audio Review: Acceptance (Forbes Mates #3) by Grace R. Duncan and Chistopher Boucher (Narrator)

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Dr. Miles Grant acknowledges that his destined mate could be either gender even though his bisexuality cost him his family and his pack. Luckily he found the Forbes Pack, who happily accepts him just as he is. What he never counted on was finding his mate in Pittsburgh or for his mate to be another species entirely—a cat!

Quincy Archer isn’t just any jaguar shifter. He is the heir to the leadership of his pride. Destined mates are nothing but legend to the nearly extinct and generally solitary jaguars, and Quincy certainly never expected to find one for himself, much less a male… or a wolf.

However, finding each other and coming to terms with their species is the least of their worries. Quincy is expected to select a proper female mate, father a cub, and take his place as heir to the pride. Except Quincy refuses, having no interest in women or leadership and knowing he isn’t right for it. But his father will stop at nothing—not even attempting to kill Miles—to get his way. Quincy and Miles must overcome many obstacles to stay together as the destined mates they’re meant to be.

Unfortunately, I was put off by the narrator’s voice for jaguar shifter, Quincy Archer, from the beginning. He gave Quincy a French accent that came off very campy—and somewhat creepy. Miles, on the other hand, had a nice voice, one I’d find typical of a sweet doctor who happens to be a wolf shifter.

As the blurb states, Quincy is heir to leadership of his pride, though he doesn’t want it. Most of the story centers around the uniqueness of a jaguar and wolf shifter couple and the attempts on Quincy’s and Miles’s life. Quincy doesn’t speak to his father, who wants Quincy to come back, marry a woman, and sire several cubs. They suspect his father must be involved in the problems they’ve been having, but when they eventually capture several of the men, they learn that it’s a much more complex plot than they originally thought.

While all this is going on, Miles and Quincy are growing closer in their relationship. Appearances by MCs from the two previous books in the series are frequent and the men provide the help—the muscle— needed to win the fight for their lives and come to the truth of what’s been happening. It appears to be a complex plot, and yet turned out to be quite simple. However, to be honest, I had difficulty following the action and I kept expecting something more than what eventually occurred. Added to the fact I couldn’t stand Quincy’s voice, and my pleasure rating on this is quite low. Though I enjoyed the others in the series, I wouldn’t recommend this one in audio.

On a positive note, the epilogue takes place eight years later and there are lots of pups and cubs running around with fathers and uncles chasing them. That alone pushed my rating up to 3 stars.

The cover by Reese Dante depicts the two young men, faces nose-to-nose, with their animals in the foreground. Similar to the covers on the first books, it’s very attractive and perfect for the story.

An Alisa Review: A Year And A Day (Fae Haven #1) by Elizabeth Silver & Jenny Urban

Rating:  3.5 stars out of 5

He wasn’t looking for love, but he’ll break all the laws of this realm and the next to keep it.

Reserved, bookish Ben isn’t looking for a relationship. Then he meets Niall, a gorgeous stranger with a knack for avoiding direct questions, and tumbles headfirst into love. Niall is perfect in just about every way, right up until he leaves town for a short trip…and vanishes off the face of the earth.

A magical being trapped in his own realm, Niall fights to return to this world to be with Ben. But by the time he gets back, more than a year has passed, and Ben refuses to believe Niall’s story of fae and magic.

With only a month to woo Ben back and earn a chance at staying permanently, Niall is willing to try anything to be with the man he loves. Then Niall’s world spills over into ours and puts Ben’s life in danger, and it becomes a race to save Ben before their stolen time comes to an end.

This was a nice story.  Niall meets Ben not long before his time on earth is up and when he goes home to tell his family he is staying he gets stuck there longer than planned.  Ben can’t believe the man he loved would just leave and not come back when he said he would only be gone a few days, not over a year and a half.

Niall and Ben have an instant connection that is easy to see as is how willing they are to really work for a relationship.  However, Niall gets caught up in the fae’s sense of fun and since time is different is gone from Ben much longer than he should have been.  Ben tries to be a hardass when Niall shows up again but it’s hard to deny your feelings.  The only thing that was hard for me was the whole situation with the Hunt, I would think all fae (especially the leader of the Hunt) would know that when you are handfasted to someone they are safe.  I look forward to the other stories in the series being re-published also.

The cover art by Melody Pond is nice and I like the visual of Niall.

A MelanieM Review: Hearts at Sea by Cristina Bruni

Rating: 3.25 stars out of 5

Benjamin Scott is a fair man and a fearless sea captain, but his heart is broken. During a fierce battle in the West Indies, he witnessed the death of his best man, Jack, who fell into the sea before Benjamin had the chance to confess his love.

Now, in Gibraltar, Benjamin runs into a stranger named John who bears an uncanny resemblance to his lost love. A friendship grows between the two, and soon turns to love. But John suffers from amnesia and wants to find out who he really is.

When John learns he isn’t Jack, Benjamin’s first lover, saved from the sea, he leaves Gibraltar with a heart full of sadness. Once Benjamin discovers John has left him, he sets sail to find him. Will he be able to find the courage to confess his love before he loses John, as well

Hearts at Sea by Cristina Bruni is a short, sweet romance placed in historical setting.  We don’t get much background on the men, virtually no naval context, actual ship’s life, historical era, language, nothing that gives an accurate feel for the era or naval military elements involved.  What the author does give you is a love between two men under unusual circumstances, an illegal attraction born of hope and passion.

It’s nicely done but honestly could be set down in any year.  I never quite felt as though the setting was authentic as I have done in other historical novels.

However, if all you are looking for is a quick sweet love story, this might just do the trick.

Cover art is gorgeous, getting right into the heart of the story and characters.
