A MelanieM Review: Merry Christmas, Josh! (A Josh of the Damned Free Ficlet) (Josh of the Damned #4.5) by Andrea Speed

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

Merry Christmas, Josh coverIt’s looking like another crappy Christmas for Josh, especially when he has to share the store with a creepy Santa cutout. But the surprise arrival of a snowman gives Josh a little holiday cheer, along with his vampire boyfriend of course!  Merry Christmas, Josh, indeed!

Merry Christmas, Josh is a funny, free ficlet (say that fast) from Andrea Speed.   It’s Christmas time in the warped and wonderful world (alliteration abounds) of Josh of the Damned and he’s not a happy boy.  Seems that Christmas is full of miserable memories and malignant melodies for Josh and its enough to make him crabby and cross. But a very peculiar and cantankerous  snowman arrives and changes the way Josh will forever look at the holidays.

Only 18 pages long, Merry Christmas, Josh, contains some of the characters, weirdness, and snark that epitomizes this series while bringing in some of the poignancy and sadness also associated with the holidays for some people, in this case Josh.  Sad childhood memories and the forced gaiety (as well as one awful cardboard Santa) of the season have Josh in a crabby frame of mind, one that some share at this time of the year.  Josh is that voice of sanity and reason (sort of) in the convenience store from Hell and that juxtaposition continues to make this a wonderful story and series.

I wish we had seen more of the characters like the Yeti and a tooth fairy or two but at 18 pages you can only bring in so many characters.  This is a fun, quick read.  And for those of you new to the Josh of the Damned series, it should give you a taste of the characters and wonderfully bizarre universe(s) they inhabit.  It’s free at Riptide Publishing.   So don’t forget to run over there and pick it up today!

Happy Reading.

CreepyQuickieBump_TourBanner

Hey, everyone! We’re Heidi, Kari, Laylah, and Sam, and we’re here touring with our three Creepy Quickies releases! Laylah’s bringing you Resurrection Man, about a man who will go to any–and we do mean any–lengths to bring his lover back from the dead. Kari has Mating Season, for those of you who love amorous aquatic beasts and mad scientists. And finally, Heidi and Sam wrote Blasphemer, Sinner, Saint, about a demon deal set in 1880s Whitechapel.

Originally written for the horror anthology Bump in the Night, our three stories span the gamut of the genre, from spine-chilling scares to stolen moments of tenderness to inescapable dead ends.

To celebrate our release, we’re giving away a $10 Riptide gift card! Just comment below–or on any of our other stops, all of which can be found on our blog tour page–with an email address to reach you, and we’ll select one lucky winner at the end of the tour!

ResurrectionMan_500x750About Resurrection Man

Necromancy means never having to say good-bye.

Consumption has claimed the life of Adel St. Claire, cutting him down in his prime. But his lover, Josef Leitner, isn’t ready to let him go. To get Adel back, Josef is willing to risk the anger of Adel’s family, make unsavory deals with a corrupt mortician, and challenge the authority of death itself.

Even if he can reanimate Adel’s body, Josef’s next challenge may be more daunting still: when a man returns from the dead, what will it take to satisfy his needs?

Riptide says “Have a free read on us! Get Resurrection Man for free right now!

About Mating Season

MatingSeason_500x750He didn’t believe in the monster of the lake . . . but that didn’t make it any less real.

When Danny needs a getaway, his best friend goads him into a week-long hiking trip. Who cares if local superstitions and old wives tales warn the wary to avoid the lake once summer nights turn chilly? The trails are still pretty, the wildlife just as plentiful, and the fall colors beautiful for the lens of Danny’s digital camera. Nothing sinister could happen, not here.

Danny was wrong. Assaulted by lusty tentacles that push his body—and his sanity—to the brink, Danny is then held captive by his best friend, betrayed for the sake of science. Unable to escape and terrified of the changes in his body, Danny’s alternatives are few. He will be returned, over and over, to the monster.

But maybe his future isn’t as bleak as it originally seemed.

Riptide says “Get Mating Season here“.

Barb, the Zany Old Lady, Review: Grumble Monkey and the Department Store Elf by B.G. Thomas, audiobook narrated by Donald Tursman

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5

Grumble Monkey and the Department Store ElfNick St. George is an affluent New York art gallery owner with a mission—he has to get to San Francisco by the end of Christmas Day. As such, he’s pushing through ice storms and horrible road conditions to get there when he takes a quick rest stop break and encounters a very strange sight. A young man, tall, slender, pretty, with big thick eyeglasses and a red-and-white striped hat that is so long it wraps around his neck like a scarf strikes up a conversation with him, or at least talks non-stop at him. This man, Kit Jeffries, is on his way home for Christmas too, but his Jeep has broken down, and he asks to ride along with Nick since it’s two hours away in the same direction in which Nick is heading.

Nick tries to refuse, but this happy-go-lucky kid just won’t shut up long enough for Nick to do that, so he reluctantly agrees. Nick is a nasty SOB and nearly everything out of his mouth is negative and derogatory. On the other hand, Kit is a Pollyanna with never a bad word, literally. Golly gee, Kit won’t even say shit, saying poop instead.

This story is built around the trip to Kit’s house, Kit’s talent as an artist which Nick reluctantly admires, and the fact that Kit’s parents haven’t been able to fly home for Christmas as expected. Over the course of this short story, we get a glimpse of Nick’s soft side, along with a heap of reasons for his lousy behavior, and we get to see what happens when bombarded with kindness from Kit.

I’d like to say that I liked the story, but really it was tough to get through. Nick wasn’t just negative, he was downright nasty and there were so many homophobic slurs that I found it offensive. Yes, I understand the author was just giving us a character but it offended me nevertheless. And Kit was a bit too sickeningly sweet. Granted he was raised to be kind to others, but his character came across as childish and immature, certainly way too young and naïve for the likes of nasty Nick.

I’m not sure if the narration helped or hindered the story. The narrator didn’t have enough vocal range to distinguish between the characters and there wasn’t a clear break between words verbalized by Nick and internal dialogue or story narration, so it was hard to tell when the character was speaking versus the narrator speaking. Plus, there was an annoying clicking sound that occurred off and on throughout the narration, not always present but it was irritating, a sound almost as if the narrator was chewing gum or making another tongue-clicking noise. It’s hard to describe but occurred enough for me to need to cite it in this audiobook review.

So I can’t give more than a 2.5 star rating to the story itself, but I would recommend reading it rather than listening to the audiobook.

The cover artist, Paul Richmond, provided a bright and colorful, interesting cover which depicted the characters perfectly. In hindsight, I believe I may have picked the story due to the cute cover.

GRL Blog Tour: Meet Deanna Wadsworth Talking Books, Eggplants and Reindeer!

Today ScatteredThoughts welcomes Deanna Wadsworth as part of the GRL Blog Tour maginifying glass with Take a Lookfor authors.

EGGPLANTS, EGGPLANTS, AND MORE EGGPLANTS

By Deanna Wadsworth

Thank you for hosting me for the GRL blog tour! September is a busy, busy time for me. Not only are the hubby and me trying to squeeze in a few more boat trips to the sandbar before the weather turns, but I am also getting all my goodies ready for GRL.
Most of all, I am busy harvesting and preserving all of the yummies from my huge garden! If you are a fellow pinner, you can check out my “Canning and Preserving” board on Pinterest.

Today, I am currently knee deep in edits for my latest book EVERYBODY HATES FRUITCAKE from THE NAUGHTY NORTH POLE series from Decadent Publishing. I am also surrounded by jalapenos, tomatoes and eggplants.
Oooh, the eggplants.

I have so many eggplants that I really have no idea what to do with them. Yes, I did the eggplant parmesan thing, and even made ratatouille—it’s more than just a Disney movie folks! Now, I am going to can more ratatouille this weekend, and even roast some eggplant then freeze it with lemon for baba ganoush this winter.

But I still have eggplants!!! About eleven more on the vines to be precise.

That is A LOT of eggplant.

You may be wondering what eggplants have to do with writing books. Nothing, really. LOL, other than the story ideas in my mind are kinda like the eggplants in my garden this year. They just keep coming and I don’t have the time to get to all of them. I worry that if I don’t write them some of them may rot and I will lose them. Seriously, I don’t understand writer’s block because I could map out what books I want to finish/write for the next several years, but be interrupted by a hundred more ideas along the way.

So which one do I write? Which eggplant do I cook next?

CupidsWager[A]LGWell, my current WIP is the third and final book in my soon-to-be titled Naughty Cupid Trilogy. A CUPID’S WAGER came out from Dreamspinner Press last February. I always saw it as a longer story, broken up into three fun reads. Believe me, Lio has plenty more to say and he’s not done with that pierced dock of Ethan’s either, LOL. The sequel and conclusion should be out sometime next summer. Fingers crossed!

I’ll also be working on lots of edits for my Christmas story EVERYBODY HATES FRUITCAKE (coming Black Friday) from Decadent Publishing. Then there is also by next BIG book, an epic historical novel entitled WRECKED which will be available from Dreamspinner Press early this spring.

In the meantime, what am I gonna do with all these eggplants? Any suggestions? Please feel free to share a fave recipe here or send me a few pins on Pinterest.

In the spirit of food, I brought along an excerpt of EVERYBODY HATES FRUITCAKE, Book Five in THE NAUGHTY NORTH POLE series. It is currently in edits, but this excerpt shares the general feel of the story, and please ignore any typos! LOL If you are new to the series, might I suggest picking up A GIFT FOR SANTA, which is currently only .99 on Amazon. There you will learn that Santa runs a different kinda North Pole and his elves are more than just toymakers…and they all have candy-flavored cum!!!

One commenter will win one of the previous four Naughty North Pole books of their choice! Hopefully, they leave a good eggplant recipe in the comment section along with their email!

Everyone Hates Fruitcake Blurb:DW_A gift for Santa_SM

Ivan is a new reindeer handler at the North Pole with the unfortunate luck to have fruitcake flavored cum. When fellow elf Jimmy hits on him, Ivan fears revealing his secret and losing a chance to have a real relationship with Jimmy.
After all, everybody hates fruitcake!
Danni’s wife Sheila is the Head Chef at the North Pole. Sheila has been on the hunt for the perfect recipe for fruitcake and neglecting her wifely duties. So when Ivan tells Danni about his dilemma, she devises a plan to solve both of their problems.
Can these two girls help Ivan realize he is perfect just the way he is? Will Danni’s wife perfect her fruitcake recipe with Ivan’s special ingredient? And more importantly, will Ivan have the courage to take Jimmy up on his offer?

Everyone Hates Fruitcake Excerpt:

As I watched Jimmy walk away I felt a pang in my guts, paired with a powerful sense of loss and longing. Part of me wanted to run after him, but the other part of me knew that the letdown would be too much to handle.

“You’ll have to see?”

I jumped, startled as a Dökkálfar girl plopped down beside me. Danni was tan and gorgeous, with long black hair and tits as big as her heart. As one of my best friends, she worked as a dispatcher in the stable office. When I’d arrived here, she’d sort of taken me under her wing until she knew I could handle all of the rough and tumble elves working in the barns. We wrangled the reindeer and Danni wrangled us.

“What?” I asked her.

She waved at Jimmy’s retreating form, her beautiful face pursed in irritation. “You’ll have to see?” she repeated, punching my arm. “You’re a bone head.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I rubbed my arm, refusing to admit anything. “And that hurt.”

“Don’t give me that pile of Yeti crap,” she said dismissively. “Jimmy has been hitting on you for weeks, but you never take the bait. I think you must be the first celibate elf in history.”

I swallowed down the last of my cocoa, not meeting her eye. “I am certainly not celibate.”

She arched her perfectly penciled brows at me. “Well, if you don’t stop being stupid you’re going to be.”

I frowned, disliking how close she came to hitting the nail on the head of my very real fears. “Do you have something else to say, or did you just come over here to abuse me then butt into my love live?”

“No, that was just a side bar. I was actually looking for you because Sheila is driving me crazy.”

Sheila was Danni’s wife. They’d had a little ceremony a few months ago before the busy season made time off at the Workshops nigh impossible. Santa had officiated and I got to drive the sleigh, which took them off into the sunset. The two girls had shamelessly made out as the Northern Lights danced above, completely oblivious of their driver more than enjoying the show.

“Trouble in paradise all ready?” I teased. “Why should I be taking relationship advice from you then?” I nudged her playfully at the same time she faced me so I ended up jabbing her in the boob.

She raised her brows, and didn’t seem too bothered. Danni was as curvy and buxom as I was tall and hairy. The memory of those two girls hot and heavy in the sleigh on the heels of Jimmy and that damn cookie made my blood warm just a bit.

“No,” she told me. “Not trouble. Sheila is just obsessing over some lost recipe and it’s driving me nuts. You know how she gets. Like a dog with a bone.”

I chuckled, grateful to have the conversation off me. Sheila was one focused woman, to the point of obsessive compulsive actually, but I liked her.

I took a heaping bite of the pie Jimmy had given me. It was delicious.

Not half as delicious as he probably tastes.

A soft hand caressed mine. “Seriously, why don’t you like Jimmy?”

Naturally, Danni wouldn’t let it drop. “It’s not that,” I answered honestly. “I like him a lot actually. That’s the problem.”

She shook her head, her long black ponytail swaying. “That makes absolutely no sense.”

“Of course you don’t get it,” I said, brushing a lock of silky black hair out of her eyes. She didn’t flinch from my familiarity. “You’re perfect.”

Grinning, she said, “Well, that’s obvious. But it still doesn’t explain why you say you like Jimmy, yet you ignore all this advances.”

“Because I don’t know if I should do anything about it. He’ll just end up being disappointed.”

“I’m still going to go with, that makes absolutely no sense.” She gave me a head to toe onceover. I managed a smile when she tipped back to take in my ass and give me a whistle—she was such a flirt. “You’re gorgeous, Ivan. And you’re funny. You forget that I’ve seen you take care of those pathetic earthbound reindeer.”

“They’re not pathetic.”

“See what I mean? All the other Dökkálfar in the stables prefer to work with the flyers. But not you. You’re kind and patient. A real caregiver. So I ask you, what would Jimmy have to be disappointed about?”

I squirmed in my seat unsure if I should tell her, but desperately wanting to. I had not breathed a word of it since I’d arrived, preferring to have my choice of lovers, rather than be laughed at like I had been in my hometown. But something about the sincerity, the kindness in Danni’s brown eyes made me feel like I should trust her. Like it was finally time to tell someone the truth.

“Because I taste like fruitcake,” I whispered.

Deanna Wadsworth might be a bestselling erotica author, but she leads a pretty vanilla life in Ohio with her wonderful husband and a couple adorable cocker spaniels. She has been spinning tales and penning stories since childhood, and her first erotic novella was published in 2010. When she isn’t writing books or brainstorming with friends, you can find her making people gorgeous in a beauty salon. She loves music and dancing, and can often be seen hanging out on the sandbar in the muddy Maumee River or chilling with her hubby and a cocktail in their basement bar. In between all that fun, Deanna cherishes the quiet times when she can let her wildly active imagination have the full run of her mind. RJ Scott has stopped by ScatteredThoughtsandRogueWords today to talk about writing and two stories that are favorites of hers.  One of them, The Christmas Throwaway is also a favorite of mine.  RJ Scott is known for her  HEAs, whether she is writing about a family in Texas (Texas series) or a group of ex Navy Seals and intelligence gatherers that are Sanctuary or  even supernatural lovers.  Nothing is outside the realm of RJ Scott and HEA and that’s marvelous news for us!

RJ has also brought a contest with her on tour.  Contest details can be found at the end.  Don’t forget to leave a comment and be entered!  Now on to RJ Scott!

✍✍✍✍✍✍✍

Welcome to of my mini author tour, thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for having me… 

When I was at the UK meet I was told by readers on more than one occasion that they thought I just wrote paranormal, or I just wrote contemporary. Of that they knew about Texas, but had never heard of the Sanctuary series. So I came up wit this idea… highlight two very different books, or series, and add in some cool prizes and maybe readers might find something new from me.

Today I thought I would focus on two books, one paranormal and one contemporary set at my favourite time of the year, Christmas. The first is Kian’s Hunter (book 1 in my Fire Trilogy) and The Christmas Throwaway.

The Christmas Throwaway is without a doubt the book that most people ask me for a sequel to. As much as I would like to follow Ben and Zach into later stories there is something very personal about this story that means I Just can’t write a book 2. The story is about Zach, a throwaway, a child thrown out by his parents, lost, alone and scared on Christmas Eve. He feels he has nowhere to turn and no one who will help him. A rookie cop, Ben, finds him on a snowy bench on Christmas Eve starving and freezing and sets out showing him that everyone deserves a Christmas miracle. The book is emotional, heart-breaking, happy, thoughtful, and has all the wonder of Christmas wrapped in and out of the words.

On the other hand Kian’s Hunter is as far away from contemporary as it is possible to be. With a parallel world to our own, monsters escaping from their side to ours, magic and fire, this is the paranormal book I grew to become proud of. Kian is a young man, only just coming into his powers, and Regan is the only man who can help him this side of the barrier. Regan isn’t convinced Kian is for real, but when both their lives are put in danger, he has to realise that he and Kian together could be the only way they stay alive.

More information, including blurbs, excerpts, buy links, reading order and reviews can be found here:

Kian's Hunter Fire ! coverKian’s Hunter : Paranormal, adventure, parallel world, demons –  Visit here for excerpt and more details.

Blurb:

Kian has crossed over from his world to ours to seek revenge. His plan is to kill the monster who murdered his Uncle. The same monster who used magic to escape to our world and is hiding here and growing in strength.

Regan Campbell is a hunter of Demons. The first son, of a first son, he is the one who protects this world from the monsters that no one else knows are here.

When Kian reaches this world, he knows Regan is the perfect man to fight alongside him, but Regan trusts no one.

It isn’t until they are facing death and a terrible evil that will be let loose, that Regan finally realises he can trust another…his fated partner, Kian.

The Christmas Throwaway coverThe Christmas Throwaway : Family, both good and bad, Christmas, love and an overwhelming message of hope –

Blurb:

Christmas is a time for giving – what do you do when no one gives a damn?

For Zachary Weston Christmas means sleeping on a churchyard bench in the freezing snow with nothing better in his future. Thrown out of his home for being gay, he is left without money or, it seems, anywhere to go.

Until a stranger shows him that some people do give a lot more than a damn.

Ben Hamilton is a rookie cop in his small home town. He finds a young throwaway, fresh from the city, sleeping on a bench in the churchyard on a snowy Christmas Eve. Can he be the one to give Zachary his own Christmas miracle?

Review: Where You Lead by Mary Calmes

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Where You Lead coverChicago-based ATF agent Peter Lomax’s past relationships never seemed to work out.  Ex boyfriends had issues with his possessiveness as well as his job.  Then Peter meets Carver Fleming at a friends party and everything changes.  Artist and gallery owner, Carver doesn’t mind that Peter is possessive.  It is a quality that Carver understands quite well as he feels the same. Nor is he bothered by the fact that law enforcement is far from his artistic world. From the beginning Peter and Carver recognize that they are perfect for each other and soon settle in to a committed relationship.

But six months into the relationship, Carver gets a call from home that changes everything.  Carver’s mother has had a stroke and he is needed home to help his father cope with his mother’s changed condition.  Unbeknownst to Peter, Carver agrees to return home, knowing such a move would not be temporary but permanent.   From Chicago to Colt, Carver’s small hometown in Kentucky is a drastic change and he realizes that not telling Peter about his plans will cause major problems between them.

Carver doesn’t want to lose Peter.  He knows that Peter’s friends and career are based in Chicago and that Peter won’t want to leave a city he loves.  So Carver plans for the two of them to visit his parents at Christmas, hoping the visit and his surprise plans will get Peter to agree to come with Carver when he moves to Colt permanently.  Carver is hoping that the charm of his hometown and his loving family will win Peter over.  Can love triumph over the hurt Peter feels at being left out of Carver’s plans?  And can a man with no family attachments of his own find one to love in Carver’s?  At Christmas, anything is possible as Peter and Carver are about to find out.

A trademark of all of Mary Calmes’ stories is that she always populates them with genuinely likable people. Her characters are guaranteed to endear themselves to the reader almost immediately from the moment they appear on the page, and our affections for them only deepen as the story progresses.    It is one of the elements that make Mary Calmes a  must read author for me and so many others.  Where You Lead is another such short story from this prolific author.

While Calmes does not provide too much back history on Peter and Carver, both men still manage to resonate with the readers.  Peter had not had a satisfactory long term relationship and neither has Carver, although for different reasons. They come complete with relationship issues anyone would recognize.  And when Peter and Carver meet, the connection between them snaps into place with lusty enthusiasm that continues throughout the story.

The story begins in Chicago at an art gallery opening to benefit the fallen agents fund.  Peter is there with his ATF partner Elliot and his wife.  The dialogue between Peter and Elliot feels appropriately affectionate and boyishly juvenile, just what you would expect of old friends.  With just a few sentences, Calmes delivers a working partnership that feels real and honest.  I wish we could have seen a little more of Peter’s life with the ATF and Elliot.   As his profession is such a large part of who Peter is as a person, additional background or scenes of his work would have fleshed this part of the character out for me.

As the location switches to Carver’s home in Colt and the situation with his mother, the plot develops further to include not just romantic love but that of family as well.  This for me is where the story really came to life.  I loved Carver’s parents.  His mother is such a strong character, especially as she deals with not only a stroke but the onset of dementia, possibly from Alzheimer’s.  It’s such a loving and painful portrait of a woman who realizes she is losing herself and the effects on those she loves.  Carver’s father is another fully realized persona and the dynamics of the father-son relationship feel authentic and grounded in reality of two such opposite personalities.

Where You Lead is only 68 pages long, and you will want the story to continue once the end is reached.  I felt as though a evening with friends had ended before I was ready for it to be over.  I would have loved for a little more exposition, maybe a epilogue to furnish a little more resolution to a heartwarming story.  It was never in doubt as to what Peter would do.  So the only real angst here is the family as it faces the reality of his mother’s heartrending future. That they will do it with love and each other’s support is a gift that they will give each other, another certainty that Calmes shares with her readers.

This story was released at Christmas but can be read at any time of the year.  Its message of love and family reaches beyond any holiday celebration.  I love this author and definitely recommend this story for all lovers of contemporary romance.

Cover art by Reese Dante.  This  cover is exquisite.  One of the best of the year.

Review: Texas Christmas (Texas #5) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5

Texas Christmas coverWith the holidays upon them, Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes are stressed out. Jack and Riley are anxiously waiting for the courts to decide if they will be able to adopt Max, the twins are growing rapidly and they still haven’t found a nanny. Meanwhile Jack’s sister Beth is about to give birth after a dangerous pregnancy, and their new employee, Liam, is having trouble adjusting to life on the Double D .

Liam Frazier loves his life working with the horses on the Double D Ranch.  His bosses are wonderful as are the other ranch hands he works with.  The trouble?  His abusive past that won’t let him go.  Now Marcus Walker, co owner of the surrogacy agency that helped Jack and Riley find a mother for their children, is flirting with him and Liam doesn’t know how to handle it.  He finds Marcus attractive but his abuse is a barrier he doesn’t know how to get past.

When Liam’s past follows him to the ranch, it puts everyone in danger.  It will take Marcus and the rest of the Double D family to help Liam  face those who hurt him so he can move forward.

I have enjoyed this series from the beginning story, The Heart of Texas, which introduced us to Jack Campbell and Riley Hayes. I have been with this couple through their rocky start with a fake marriage and tumultuous family histories, their declarations of love, the murderous events that took place and the fire that almost cost them their lives and home.  In the previous story, Texas Family, Jack and Riley’s family had grown to include twins as well as the children and partners of the rest of their extended family.  It was a joyous layered story that took us through the surrogacy issues for gay families and introduced us to Max, a young foster child with autism.

Texas Family was a book packed with relevant issues and new characters.  It also left us with some unresolved elements, specifically those that focus on Max’s adoption fight and the new ranch hand Liam Frazier.  I am happy to report that with Texas Christmas, R.J. Scott ties up all those loose ends happily and on a perfect note for a book about families, friends, and the holidays.

Jack and Riley’s relationship is still the foundation upon which this series rests and they are still working on their marriage here, adjusting to the twins, their daughter getting older, and all the other stresses life can put on a marriage.  It’s a healthy, sexual and deep relationship and the author relays that beautifully.  But I have to admit its the newest member I wanted more of.

I was entranced with Max from the moment Scott introduced him to Jack and Riley.  The little boy clutching his Thomas the Tank Engine toy caught at our hearts.  RJ Scott did not shy away from the issues of adopting a child with autism.  Max’s emotional issues, his inability to deal with certain social situations, the manner in which he communicates, and well, everything about a life with an autistic child is relayed realistically along with the love.  There is a magical moment that RJ Scott brings to life as Max explores a sensory room Jack and Riley have created for him.  The wonder of a child caught up inside his mind is revealed in such a way that we feel we are on the floor with him, holding our breath as Max explores with a quiet joy a place created for him out of love.

Liam Frazier is another special character and his story is brought full circle as well.  But as his started in pain and abuse, those elements reappear to be dealt with before he can move forward.  The elements where Liam decides he needs outside help to deal with his abuse, the frustration Liam feels as he tries to deal with Marcus and a real relationship have a feeling of authenticity to them. Liam brings out our empathy and our compassion.

There are several scary and heartrending scenes.  But they serve to heighten the satisfaction the reader will feel as all the elements come together to give Jack, Riley and all the others a Christmas to remember.  Consider this story and this series highly recommended!

Here are the stories in the Texas series in the order they were written and should be read:

The Heart of Texas (Texas, #1)
Texas Winter (Texas, #2)
Texas Heat (Texas, #3)
Texas Family (Texas, #4)
Texas Christmas (Texas #5)

Cover by Meredith Russell.  The cover is adorable and perfect in every way.

Review: Home for the Hollandaise by Julia Talbot and BA Tortuga

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Home for the Hollandaise coverJack Shields has returned home for the holidays to the town he hates.  His dad is suffering from Alzheimer’s, his mother needs him and his cooking to make things  bearable, at least for Christmas.  The town Jack grew up in is full of bad memories, especially for a gay boy in Texas, including the cheating boyfriend he loved , left behind after a knockdown fight and has still never forgotten.

Kent Thibault has just returned to the town where he grew up in order to spend the holidays with his mother.  Now a musician, Kent has nothing but bad memories of this small Texas town, including the fact that it was where he lost the boy he grew up with and loved.  One night, one horrible misunderstanding, one fight and now 10 years later, Kent still thinks about Jack, the one that got away.

Now both have returned to town for the holidays and family.  A chance meeting at the local grocery brings up old memories, bad and good and reignites all the old feelings.  When two former lovers still very much in love meet again, is it too much for them to hope that a future together is still possible?

From the title to the characters within, I loved Home for the Hollandaise by Julia Talbot and BA Tortuga.  A Torquere Holiday short story, it brings up all the best and the worst of  Christmas with the family, especially families breaking apart under stress and illness.  For 49 pages, the reader is brought into the lives of Jack, his family and his former boyfriend, Kent.  Jack is home under the worst conditions as his father has Alzheimer’s and is only intermittently aware of who Jack is.  What Jack’s father does remember is Jack’s cooking.  Jack is a mini-celebrity chef in Austin and his food is a path back to his father.

I found this element, the relationship of Jack with his father and the scene as they connect over food, possibly for the last time, incredibly touching and real.  Its that touch of authenticity and warmth that illuminates the depth of family love over familial discord and brings pathos to the holidays as well as joy.

The characters here from Jack’s mother shaking under the stress and pain of the situation, Kent staying in the trailer his Mom has stashed in the backyard as a rental, and the old football bully from high school, all are created with a deft hand and painted with the realism and knowledge of small town Texas life.  I just loved this story and only wish that I could have lingered a tiny bit more with the men back in Austin, trying for that future once again that they thought they had lost.

Cover illustration by A Squires is ok, but with such a great title, wouldn’t you think hollandaise would be on the table as well?
