A MelanieM Release Day Review: Don’t Twunk With My Heart (Loving You #2) by Renae Kaye

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Don't Twunk With My HeartKee Smith isn’t sure who he is anymore. He knows who he used to be—the ignored gay son who chose a blue-collar job just because no one expected it, the submissive bottom who enjoyed large, masculine jocks who put him in his place, the sleek, fashionable twink who partied all night. But after his ex-boyfriend hit Kee and called him names, Kee retired from the social scene.

Back after a year’s hiatus, Kee still doesn’t know where he fits. His friends say he’s a twunk—a twink who put on muscle and turned into a hunk—but Kee is searching for somewhere to belong. Instead of going back to his usual type, Kee hooks up with twink Tate Stevens—a fashion-industry professional who works the image hard. It proves to be the best decision he’s ever made, and not just because he’s starting to regain his sexual confidence.

With Tate, Kee can open up about his fears and confusion without ridicule. Tate has his own fears about putting on weight and getting old. It will take work to make a relationship of opposites succeed, but they begin to realize the compromises will be worth it if they can be together.

I admit I missed the first story in this series and came at this  without the backstory and couples in Loving Jay (Loving You, #1) and now I think that was a  mistake I have to rectify.  Why?  Because reading this story without all that back history definitely takes away from the depth of the characters here and for me, a lessening of the connection between us.

Kee Smith used to be a twink but after escaping from an abusive relationship, he’s changed.  He works out, cut his hair and become, in the terminology of his gay friend…a twunk.  Kaye delivers the new Kee immediately to the reader in a full fledged portrait.  I loved Kee, complete with reservations about this transition and how he will be received at the local bar his friends hang out at.  The only thing missing here?  The Kee from Loving Jay, that abused twink that makes this one have more layers, more depth.  The events that occur later in the story make reading the Loving Jay even more important as a backdrop to this one.  Without knowing how bad his relationship was or who Kee was as a twink, part of this story is lost.

Tate Stevens, another character from the original story, is a buoyant, joyous, wonder of a character.  A chatterbox with impeccable taste  Tate is such a delight for those readers who love characters who can’t seem to stop talking.  I’m one of those.  I love the constant stream of words flowing  out of Tate’s mouth…a river of thoughts in search of a canal gate they will never find.  You either have a wide tolerance for these people in stories and real life or you don’t.  The fact that Renae Kaye writes Tate in such as way as his fountain of words can be irritating to some I find believable if not downright funny.  Who hasn’t met these people?

Kaye works to get Kee and Tate together by having Kee think through some of his issues with Tate with their friends from Loving Jay and other secondary characters.  It works but again, not having read that first story made reading this book that much harder.  I really need to go pick up that book.  I was left feeling that there were just not again world building to fill in all the assumed storylines.

Did I enjoy this story?  Yes, I love characters that don’t easily slide into relationships but have to work out their issues before they can find out if they have have a future with someone else.  This happens here not once but twice.  Plus its Renae Kaye, another must read author for me.

But I do absolutely recommend you pick up and read Loving Jay (Loving You, #1) first before going on to read Don’t Twunk With My Heart (Loving You, #2).  It will save you from having to do what I’m going to do next.  Go backwards.  But this romance is adorable, so are the men.  And I loved their friends that served as their family and support system.  Kaye made it a believable community, one you rooted for and wanted to revisit.  Which I’m about to do now.  Why don’t you do the same?

SeriesLoving You #2

An Alisa Audiobook Review: Out of Nowhere (Middle of Somewhere #2) by Roan Parrish and Spencer Goss (Narrator)

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

out-of-nowhere audioThe only thing in Colin Mulligan’s life that makes sense is taking cars apart and putting them back together. In the auto shop where he works with his father and brothers, he tries to get through the day without having a panic attack or flying into a rage. Drinking helps. So does running and lifting weights until he can hardly stand. But none of it can change the fact that he’s gay, a secret he has kept from everyone.

Rafael Guerrera has found ways to live with the past he’s ashamed of. He’s dedicated his life to social justice work and to helping youth who, like him, had very little growing up. He has no time for love. Hell, he barely has time for himself. Somehow, everything about miserable, self-destructive Colin cries out to him. But down that path lies the troubles Rafe has worked so hard to leave behind. And as their relationship intensifies, Rafe and Colin are forced to dredge up secrets that both men would prefer stay buried.

I really enjoyed listening to this story.  Colin has spent so long denying that he is gay he almost believes it himself becoming more and more self-destructive as time goes on.  He only has one friend and is determined to make his father proud of him.  Rafe made some mistakes in his youth and has spent the rest of his life trying to make life better for LGBT teens with opportunities that he never had.

This story is told from Colin’s point of view; however, we are able to see Rafe’s emotions, if from a skewed view.  Rafe wants to show Colin that he is worth more than he believes.  When Colin really opens himself up to admitting to others that he is gay, he realizes that he would do anything for Rafe.  Seeing him finally reconnect with Daniel, his gay brother from book one, is wonderful.

Spencer Goss did a wonderful job narrating this story.  The use of different voices for the characters helped me keep track of the story.  He did a great job of portraying the characters emotions and feelings in his reading.

Cover art by AngstyG is great and follows the series style.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Signs of Desire by Tempeste O’Reily ~ Audiobook narrated by Jeff Gelder

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

signs-of-desire audioWhen a night out turns into a matchmaking scheme, they thought communication would be their biggest challenge to their happily ever after….

Simon Tyler knows his job as a gay romance author makes his lack of faith in love more than a little ironic, but he’s tired of being used for his wallet. When a night out turns into a matchmaking scheme orchestrated by his best friends—though he’s not the target—Simon’s not thrilled, but since he’s sworn off happily-ever-after anyway, he goes along with it… until he meets the object of their efforts, Adrian, and finds perhaps he hasn’t given up on love after all.

Professor Adrian Keys has tried to date hearing men before, but being deaf himself, he’s never had any success at making a connection. After his friends con him into going out and Adrian realizes it’s all an elaborate plan to set him up, he braces for yet another failure, only to discover there is a spark—except it’s not with the man his friends had in mind, but with Simon Tyler instead.

Not all their friends have found a way past their romantic failures, but Simon and Adrian might be on the path to happily-ever-after.

My fourth audiobook in this series and it’s the one I liked best. Both MCs are sweet and special in their own way. Adrian is a professor at the local college and a computer expert. He’s deaf but that doesn’t stop him from doing whatever he wants to do. He’s the cutie we met in Chase’s story when Chase was trying to date him and Rhys got super jealous.

Simon is his newest love interest. Simon, one of James’s friends, has been around from the beginning of the series. He’s sweet and shy and an LGBTQ+ romance writer.  He’s also extremely wealthy from a rich and powerful family who are pushing for reform that will counteract all the work done by gay rights groups. Needless to say, Simon doesn’t associate with them, but he’s been burned before by guys who only wanted his money, and he’s at the point where he doesn’t trust easily.  When he meets Adrian, though, things change for the better.

From Adrian’s perspective, Simon is a great person to get to know better. He seems unlike many of the men in his past who treated him as if he was inferior, and he’s far from that. Simon immediately signs up to learn sign language and spends as much time as he can with Adrian so they can get to know one another.

The angst in this story comes primarily from Simon’s family and from both MCs’ distrust of relationships based on their past experiences. Overall, it’s a great romance and one that I would recommend to those who want to read something sweet and hopeful.

The narration was not bad, the vocalizations varied, but it could be better.  This is the same narrator as books 2 and 3, and I finally figured out what I don’t like about his narration—he makes an extra-long pause at each comma. But it’s not just at each compound sentence comma—it’s each and every comma. This means he pauses for the commas used in direct address, appositives, and interrupters.  It becomes annoying quickly.  If I could wave a magic wand, I’d ask that he not do that, and then I’d be able to say the audiobook was perfect.

Cover art by Reese Dante is similar to the other books in the series with a soft, watercolor background. In this case a man’s hand, with forefinger and pinky raised, symbolizes sign language. The hand rests against books that symbolize romance writing, thereby capturing the spirit of both men.

An Alisa Review: Keeping Karma by Tory Temple

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Keeping KarmaAlex Myers is keeping deeper secrets than just his pet ferret, Karma, who is illegal in California. Both Alex and his twin sister, Tabitha, can “hear” the thoughts of animals. It’s an ability he puts to good use working at an emergency animal clinic while studying to become a veterinarian.

One night, local animal-control officer Dylan Travers comes into the clinic with an injured fawn, and it doesn’t take the two men long to act on their mutual attraction. But the closer they become, the harder it is for Alex to keep Karma and the rest of his menagerie from Dylan. And then there’s the matter of his ability…. Will Dylan even believe him if he tries to explain?

Add to that debilitating migraines from especially “loud” animals and a scheming coworker threatening the clinic, and Alex needs Dylan’s support more than ever. Alex just wants to keep his job, his pets, his lover, and his sanity. But he can’t do it alone.

This was an enjoyable story.  Alex has learned to keep his ability a secret so others don’t think he’s crazy.  It is a benefit sometimes when helping injured animals.

This story is told from Alex’s point of view.  You can see how both characters feel about each other through his eyes and as their relationship develops.  When Dylan learns about him “hearing” animals Alex is sure that their relationship will be over.

This was not a very deep story, you could tell the characters’ feelings, but they didn’t do too much to delve into the feelings.  This story was nice, but my only thing is they didn’t really resolve their issue just glossed over it with everything been fine in the end.

Cover art by Anna Sikorska is cute and I wouldn’t do anything different.

Hollywood comes to Roanoke when a major film studio announces they’re shooting part of their Civil War film at a local plantation. Vinnie is dismayed to discover that the lead actress is none other than the beautiful and popular Caroline St. Clair. Ethan and Vinnie made her acquaintance in LA the previous Halloween, while undercover, and Vinnie still hates her for hitting on his man. Ethan reassures his partner that Roanoke is big enough for all of them to co-exist without running into one another.

But Fate has it in for Vinnie and Ethan, and they find themselves assigned to a new case involving the actress. Apparently she requested Ethan specifically, to Vinnie’s dismay. But he doesn’t have a choice, he has to play nice. It’s small consolation to Vinnie that his new undercover identity involves Hollywood heartthrob Troy McGarrett, who is very handsome and openly gay. Troy isn’t shy about letting Vinnie know he finds him attractive.

Jealousy abounds in the second book of the Rose and Thorne series, and time is not on Vinnie and Ethan’s side. If they don’t solve the case before the film shoot is done, there’s a good chance they’ll be separated for the first time since they were partnered. Assuming Vinnie doesn’t kill Caroline St. Clair himself.

Excerpt

“Hey, Vin, did you see who’s in town?”

I was slumped at the kitchen table, my head cradled on top of my arms. I was grumpy and sleepy—and maybe a few of the other Seven Dwarves—and I needed my first cup of morning coffee before I could even consider being slightly civil.

We’d spent most of last night sitting in our car, in the goddamn middle of nowhere, staring at nothing, assigned to a fruitless surveillance in a small town about an hour from Roanoke. As it turned out, all the real action was in a different small town in the complete opposite direction from where we waited, because our so-called informant couldn’t spell the name of the place correctly. What a difference one letter makes. So we’d ended up completely wasting our time, got lost trying to find the rest of the task force at the end of the night, almost got hit by a deer that came out of nowhere and took a sudden shine to our car, and then suffered the indignity on our return of being asked where the hell we’d been all night—and we still needed to do the paperwork. And now Ethan wanted to play Twenty Questions?

“Don’t know and don’t care,” I mumbled.

I heard him slap something down on the table. I forced one eye open, just in time to see him sashay toward the coffeemaker. Okay, for that ass, I’d open the other one too. I watched as he poured the blessed elixir into two mugs, added the appropriate amount of creamer and sugar to each, then returned to where I still watched him and set one in front of me.

Right next to the morning paper. Real subtle, Ethan.

Meet the author:

Julie Lynn Hayes first began publishing short stories and poetry in the 1990’s, when it was a different ballgame altogether, and Ebooks hadn’t been dreamed of yet. That changed in 2010 with the acceptance of her first romance novel. She’s come a long way since that first book appeared, and is finding the journey a very educational one.

She lives in St. Louis with her daughter Sarah and her cat Ramesses. She often writes of two men finding true love and happiness in one another’s arms, and is a great believer in the happily ever after. She likes to write in different genres, to stretch herself in order to see what is possible. Her great challenge is to be told something can’t be done—she feels compelled to do it.

When she isn’t writing, she enjoys crafts, such as crocheting and cross stitch, needlepoint and knitting, and she loves to cook, spending time watching the Food Network. Her favorite chef is Geoffrey Zakarian. Her family thinks she’s a bit off, but she doesn’t mind. Marching to the beat of one’s own drummer is a good thing, after all. Her published works can be found at Dreamspinner Press, eXtasy Books, and Wayward Ink Press.

A Jeri Release Day Review: The Luckiest Master (Iron Eagle Gym #3) by Sean Michael

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

The Luckiest MasterWhen Master Damien Richardson (Day to his friends) takes over the front desk manager job at the Iron Eagle Gym, he knows he’s going to need an assistant. But finding the right person for the job is harder than he thought it would be. When he meets Saw, he thinks he’s found the solution to all his problems, and maybe something more.

Sawyer Whitehead lost his master to a tragic car accident some years ago, and since then one opportunity after another has gone sour on him. Thoroughly convinced he’s cursed and a jinx to everything and everyone he touches, he refuses to officially become Day’s assistant because he knows that as soon as he does, something terrible will happen. He’s even more determined not to get involved with Day, despite his attraction, because it would kill him to be responsible for tragedy befalling the lovely man.

Day must convince Saw that he’s not cursed and that together, they can face any challenge that comes their way—in both their professional and personal partnerships.

This is book 4 in the series, but can be read as a stand alone. I hadn’t read the previous 3, so that’s a good thing for me.

I had to infer some things, but it wasn’t difficult.  Day takes over as the manager of the Iron Eagle gym. Almost immediately he realizes it is way too much work for one person. He asks a regular member to help him recruit someone to help.

Sawyer, known as Saw, is a member who had lost his previous Master to a car accident years ago. They lived a 24/7 life and Saw was drifting and lost. Between that and other failures, Saw feels cursed. He agrees to help, but without pay and only until a permanent replacement is found.

The chemistry between Day and Saw is immediate and palpable. Saw has committed himself to being alone, but Day knows what Saw needs. Him.

I really enjoyed Day pulling Saw out of his shell and getting him to believe that he is worthy of a loving relationship.

Saw is an ultimate sub, and even though he said he wouldn’t be anyone’s sub again, it is so natural for him, he slips right into the role without realizing it. Day never takes that for granted though. He is loving and nurturing.

This book is chock full of sex. Dirty and loving, sweet and hot.

There were parts that were a bit repetitive,  including endearment and Master. There were a few continuity issues with it being read as a stand alone.

A good BDSM book, but I recommend reading the previous three first.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is good and works for the story.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Betrothed: A Faery Tale by Therese Woodson and Matthew Lloyd Davies (Narrator)

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

betrothed-a-faery-tale audiobookFaery royalty have always married for duty rather than love. Prince Chrysanths should be no different—except with a human for a father, the prince known as Puck already is different. When he is betrothed against his will to Prince Sky, Puck flees to his father in the human world, only to have Sky follow.

Prince Sky Song of the Clouds isn’t thrilled with the prospect of marriage either, but is bound by duty to follow through. If he can’t win Puck over, the faery realm might very well dissolve into utter chaos. Too busy arguing, Puck and Sky are unaware there are others with a vested interest in seeing the betrothal fail. In a bid for Puck’s crown, they’ll seek to keep them apart, even as Puck and Sky realize that duty and love don’t always have to be mutually exclusive.

This is a delightfully sweet and fun faery tale romance between two royal faeries: one full-blooded, one half-human.  Prince Chrysanths is half-human because, in her youth, his mom escaped the kingdom in a fit of temper and crossed through to the human world where she met a handsome stranger one day.  The result was the prince, or Puck, as he likes to be called. His parents never married because his grandparents forbade it, but Puck has been allowed to go visit his dad occasionally and has a nice relationship with him.

When Puck finds out Prince Sky Song of the Clouds is on his way to marry him to fulfill a commitment to unite the sky kingdom with Puck’s earth kingdom, he shows his inherited temper by fleeing to his father’s home in the human world.  Bound and determined to go through with the wedding, Sky asks Puck’s BFF to show him the way, and he arrives on Puck’s doorstep to Puck’s great surprise.

With Puck’s father’s support, the two hang out together and become friends. Though Puck continues to see a girl he once slept with, it’s more as a friend—at least from his perspective. But Sky doesn’t know that, and jealousy rears its ugly head. Then when Sky becomes ill, and Puck is mired in his own mess, things go from bad to worse. The good news is that this is indeed a faery tale, and our princes eventually make their way to a happy ending.

Narrated by Matthew Lloyd Davis, this audiobook version feels very genuine and flows smoothly in his beautiful UK accent.

The cover by Anna Sikorska is a striking depiction of Sky, complete with faery wings and the sky-blue tattoos on his arms.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: Turning the Page by Andrew Grey

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Turning the PageMalcolm Webber is still grieving the loss of his partner of twenty years to cancer. He’s buried his mind and feelings in his legal work and isn’t looking for another relationship. He isn’t expecting to feel such a strong attraction when he meets Hans Erickson—especially since the man is quite a bit younger than him.

Hans is an adventure writer with an exciting lifestyle to match. When he needs a tax attorney to straighten out an error with the IRS, he ends up on the other side of the handsome Malcolm’s desk. The heat between them is undeniable, but business has to come first. When it’s concluded, Hans leaps on the chance to make his move.

Malcolm isn’t sure he’s ready for the next chapter in his life. Hans is so young and active that Malcolm worries he won’t be able to hold his interest for long. Just when he’s convinced himself to take the risk and turn the page, problems at the law office threaten to end their love story before it can really begin.

This story from Andrew Grey was outstanding, IMHO, and not just because I found Malcolm to be kind-hearted, yet sharp-witted, and dedicated to both his profession and the memory of his lost love. I felt a warm empathy for his character right from the beginning. Andrew Grey created a sweetheart wrapped in a smart lawyer’s skin, a man who loved deeply and grieves just as much. I also loved the fact that he’s in his fifties, and he’s still a healthy adult male with a good libido!

Hans is also a very engaging character. Smart and adventurous, he falls head-over-heels for Malcolm and persistently works to chip away at the wall Malcolm has erected around himself—one block at a time. As a supporting character, Malcolm’s brother was well-fleshed out. He’s the one who gets Malcolm to make the call to Hans after they meet while out to dinner, and he’s supportive and positive toward them throughout the book.

Malcolm and Paul have both romantic and adventurous dates, and they have very scary experiences—both separately and together—which add excitement and intrigue to the story. I think even the sex scenes are more hot? Descriptive? Evocative? Not sure which word best describes them but they were certainly present and certainly not just a quick kiss in the dark. Another cheer for Mr. Grey for showing that men over age forty have sex—and enjoy it!

So, I definitely recommend this one to all lovers of MM romance, especially those who love a hurt-comfort story, men over forty, or healing from grief. This one has it all, and it’s very well done.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is beautiful and perfect for the story.

Barb, A Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Moment of Truth (Moments in Time #2) by Karen Stivali ~ Audiobook narrated by Robert Neiman

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5

moment-of-truth audioCollin expected to spend another summer fixing cars and working at the college pizzeria. Instead, he’s living in a beach house on Fire Island, waiting tables at a hip seaside restaurant and, for the first time since he and Tanner got together, they can publicly be known as boyfriends. Being “out” takes some getting used to, but with the help of new and old friends, Collin is happier than he ever imagined. And more in love. But newfound freedom brings unexpected challenges, and when friends get flirty, old insecurities arise. Moments of doubt and jealousy threaten their happiness, and Collin and Tanner must confront the truth or risk losing it all.

This story picks up where Moment of Impact leaves off as Collin joins Tanner for a good summer job, complete with beach house living on Fire Island. When they arrive, Collin is disappointed to learn that Tanner is being transferred to the bar business owned by the same woman who owns the restaurant where Collin will be assigned. Collin is still not 21 so he can’t even hope to work with his boyfriend; all he can do is observe from a distance as some of the female summer crowd continually hit on Tanner—especially a hot little number named Amy.

Most of the story takes place at various locations around the island and involves Tanner and Collin having sex. There are a few times when they aren’t having sex, but while listening to the audio, I felt as if I was perpetually eavesdropping on their private time. Things run smooth until the last half hour of the book when jealousy rears its ugly head, and the guys have a major falling out. To be honest, I found it quite trite and totally expected, so it didn’t feel like anything more than self-inflicted unnecessary drama.

The narrator was good in that he gave the MCs young voices, but on the other hand, it was difficult to differentiate between the two. Overall, the narration didn’t add or detract from the story, but to be honest, if I had the e-book, I may have skipped some of the sex scenes. It pretty quickly became boring to listen to the repetitive action.

Those who enjoyed Moment of Impact will likely enjoy this as well as it continues the story of the couple who first fell in love as college roommates. I understand there is a third book that will pick up where this leaves off, so it should definitely be read for those who plan to complete the series.

Cover by Anna Sikorska is a headshot of a very handsome young man, likely Tanner, since the first featured Collin, the blond. It’s attractive and links the series by the similar background and style.
