Author Bio 1

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with two cats who are convinced that the house is run to suit them; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date it appears as though the cats may be winning.

In 2008 she completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra.

She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth.

Anne Barwell on The Kiwi Connection!

The Kiwi Connection

Thanks for hosting me today J

As a Kiwi writer, my books often have New Zealand references or characters although sometimes this isn’t possible, as it needs to work with the story I’m telling. So far, I only have one story set in New Zealand, but I’m planning to do something about that.

Slow Dreaming is set very close to home to me as it takes place in Petone where I grew up. Sean’s a songwriter who works in a café in Jackson Street, and one of his favourite places to go and think is the Petone foreshore. I’ve spent many hours on that same beach, and the café is based on one I visit regularly. It was fun writing something set locally, and I had a few comments from local readers who recognised the places I was writing about. It made the research so much easier too and I was able to use some Kiwi idioms.

In Winter Duet, book two of my WWII Echoes series, Kristopher, Michel and the team meet a downed RAF pilot, Leo. During WWII many NZ pilots flew with the RAF. Leo is from Wellington and his uncle has a farm in the Wairarapa, which is several km from here. I remember my dad talking about a big earthquake that took place during the war, which was centred in the Wairarapa. Leo references it in the book, and also mentions the sheep on his uncle’s farm. After all, a New Zealand reference needs sheep in there somewhere, right?

Shades of Sepia, the first book in The Sleepless City series I’m writing with Elizabeth Noble, introduces Ben Leyton. Ben’s a Kiwi on his OE (overseas experience) in Flint, Ohio, a city in the States. It’s the little things that take Ben by surprise as he adjusts to life in the U.S. Here, a flat white refers to coffee with milk; there he’s asked why he’s talking about house paint. He doesn’t like creamer, being used to milk in his tea and coffee. Creamer here is powdered stuff used in coffee machines. We’re an agricultural country, so dairy products are a biggie. Milk is available as full cream, homogenised, trim (low fat) and calci trim (added calcium), and it comes in various flavours such as chocolate, strawberry, lime etc. On a side note, I had a friend visit the U.S after I wrote Shades of Sepia. He was waiting at a dentist and was offered tea with creamer. His reaction was the same as Ben’s.

With the Sleepless City being a series, and contemporary, I’ve been able to explore a lot more of the differences between here and the U.S than in other stories, through Ben’s reactions and speech. Although we all speak English we have different names for different things eg garbage/rubbish, sidewalk/footpath. Ben’s use of slang often leads to questions too, especially when he refers to something as ‘sweet as’. There isn’t a word missing—the point of it is that there is no comparison. We also refer to something as ‘cold as’, ‘hot as’ etc.

In book three of the series, Family and Reflection, Ben’s friend, Ange, comes to visit. I had several betas (non-Kiwis) who asked me if her saying she was going to find a ‘park’ was a typo and whether it should be a parking spot. Neither of my Kiwi betas commented at all, as that’s what we say here, and how Ange, a Kiwi, would say it. It’s the little things that show our origins.

I’m looking forward to setting my new series Outliers in Wellington—once I’ve finished my current series. Ben and his vampire partner, Simon, will also be visiting Wellington, and interacting with some of those characters, in book three of the spin off series Opus: Tales of

the Sleepless City. After all, Ben’s had fun trying to adjust to a culture that isn’t his own so it’s only fair that his partner gets to do the same in reverse.

A Sammy Review: Making Nice by Elizah J. Davis

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Making Nice cover“This is my friend Ryan. He made pecan pie. I hope that’s okay with everyone?”

“I’m allergic to nuts,” Blake muttered. Or evidently said loudly enough for everyone to hear. Ryan snorted, Bianca glared, Matt looked like a confused puppy, and his mom gave him a questioning look and said, “Pecan is your favorite.”

“It’s a recent allergy,” Blake said weakly.

Ryan walked past him to set the pie on the counter and whispered, “Don’t worry. My nuts are hypoallergenic.”

Being a twin is special, and when Blake’s twin Bianca meets Matt and falls madly in love with him, it’s imperative that Blake approves. The thing is, Matt isn’t so bad. His friend, Ryan, on the other hand, is a completely different story.

Granted, they get off on the wrong foot – meaning that Ryan is pretty much foot in mouth. He can’t help himself, the stupid comments just keep pouring out.

Sometimes, though, foes make the best lovers, and Blake and Ryan teeter on the line of hate, to tolerance, to tolerating sleeping together because sex is about the only time they don’t drive each other mad. They decide to keep their arrangement a secret, and as with all secrets, things get mucked up when a secret becomes common knowledge.

Making Nice is a lot more than enemies becoming lovers, it extends to a relationship building between two people who are both equally flawed and live up close and personal with their worst enemies – themselves.

“I’m just saying, I guess—make sure you’re paying attention. Blake has a tendency, if he doesn’t think he can get what he wants, to take what he can get.”

Ryan forced a smile, though it felt like he’d just been insulted. “Which one am I, then? What he wants or what he can get?”

I was a bit nervous at first. This is a fairly long book and it’s a new author for me, but I loved the idea for the plot and went in with an open mind. Elizah Davis did not disappoint.

I’ve said before that one of the things I love is good banter between characters. I understand that it’s not something that should happen in every story, that’d get boring, but I just love it when an author can make characters duel with words and pull the reader into it. This was the case for Blake and Ryan. They truly had a banter that lasted even after their relationship progressed, and it made their relationship that much sweeter for me.

To a certain extent, the blurb really doesn’t do the story justice. It’s so much more than this hate-sex type of deal. The reason the story is the length it is, at least in my opinion, is because you get to see their relationship build. It’s not an automatic hate one day, love the next – they kind of fall into it. It’s a progression that you can visibly watch throughout the chapters.

I also enjoyed the side characters. There were a decent number of them, but I never got mixed up on who was who or who had been told what. They had personality and life that added to the story for me. I do wish we’d gotten to hear more about Ryan’s family life, as most of it deals with Blake’s, but that was just something that would’ve been a nice addition.

I will say that the thing some people may struggle with here are communication issues – Ryan and Blake certainly have them. The reason it didn’t bother me in this story is because I saw it as a natural byproduct of their relationship and its roots, and also a growing pain that they needed to overcome. The author doesn’t make this a moot point though, and at one point outwardly acknowledges that communication is probably more beneficial for them. To me, their communication issues made sense, it worked.

Also, I really adore the cover art by Paul Richmond. It fits the story quite well, right down to the check list (with friends crossed out, which totally made me smile after reading the story).

A Mika Review: All That Heaven Will Allow by D.W. Marchwell

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5:

All that Heaven Will Allow coverJimmy Campbell has owned his own bar for the past twenty years. While his past is troubled, his present and future make life worth living. He has good friends, more than enough money, and he volunteers—along with his Yorkie, Bozo, and his Maine coon cat, Miss Alicia—at the local hospital every Friday. He couldn’t ask for more. That is, until he meets Derek “Dizzy” Roberts.

Derek is a musician who tours the country with his band. He’s an ex-cop, was married once, and has the bitter ex-wife and two spoiled children to prove it. He’s finally living his dream, and that includes bedding all the groupies who think he’s every bit as good as his music. He doesn’t worry much about the future, until he meets Jimmy.

The two men begin a long-distance romance, sneaking weekends here and there, until a tragedy forces them to realize they might lose the only thing they both want–a future together. Now, they’re asking for everything heaven will allow.

I loved everything about these two. I liked that it was 2 guys over 40 years old. Yes both had bad previous relationship but they came into this one only with each other in mind. It was definitely instant love, but at their respected ages I’m pretty sure they knew what was what. This was my first read by this author and I’m glad I really enjoyed it. It felt really slow paced in the beginning,   more character driven than the romance and I was okay with that.

Both mc’s were equally great in their own ways, but Jimmy definitely stole the show for me. I’m not an animal person by far but what Jimmy was able to do with his heart and for other people is amazing. He was super patient, honest, loyal, and all about second chances. He was super caring, and he just came off as the perfect guy. I mean I don’t think he said one negative thing the entire book, and he definitely pulled at my heart strings for sure. Sure he had his issues, damages and reasons for wanting to start something with Derek but I’m super happy he gave into it, because it made him a happier man.

When Derek is first introduced it’s him offering himself as a player name Dizzy. LMAO, I thought he was super charming, but of course all that charming was just a facade for the man underneath. Their first interaction with each other had me rooting for Jimmy and snorting at Dizzy because he just got served big time.

All in all, they made their romance work for them. Dizzy finally got the family he wanted, James finally had someone who love and appreciated him. A couple things bothered me, Derek’s previous relationship and children story line didn’t get wrapped. I felt like it was just left off, and I would have liked to seen some type of mending of the sorts. It was a lot of misspellings in the book; I did think they needed a better proofreader. I didn’t tear up surprisingly. I would recommend this book to CR readers, just an easy read between two older guys. I like reading about older guys. I find that they tend to communicate a lot better, and that’s mostly what I’m looking for.

The cover artist Bree Archer created this cover, and I liked the picture because it was full circle for the two guys. I did feel like the one portraying James wasn’t since in the book he was a full blond, other than that I really liked it.

Barb, A Zany Old Lady Review: Vixen’s Valor by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4 stars out of 5:

Vixen's Valour coverSexy, and shall we say slutty, Vixen, one of Santa’s trusted Rein Dear squad has been jealous of his team leader, Rudy, for years. Though Rudy is his friend, Vixen’s now even more envious of Rudy since Rudy captivated the heart of Prince Jack Frost (The Heart of Frost). Always wanting to be the center of attention, Vixen uses his body to entice as many members of the Toy Soldier Army into his bed as possible.

His dreams of one day becoming a prince are unrealistic, but he can’t help himself, and even when presented with an opportunity to date Lieutenant Vale Frost, cousin to the prince, he treats the date casually. Until he starts to notice that he’s interested in more than Vale’s body, and Vale is interested in more of him than a quick and easy tumble in the snow.

Then, just as their relationship begins to mean more to each of them, Vixen betrays Vale’s trust and winning it back nearly costs him his life. Will he succeed? What will happen with his friendship with Rudy? And what awaits Vixen and Vale in the future? You’ll have to pick this up to find out.

This is such a fun series! Charlie Cochet has put together a sweet holiday saga laced with visions of sugar plum fairies, toy soldiers, Santa’s elves, and the highly esteemed Rein Dear squad. Her subtle sense of North Pole humor is woven throughout each of the books in the series, and this one is no exception. Don’t hesitate to pick it up.

~~~~~
Cover Art by Paul Richmond depicts a sexy Vixen trying to entice a more straight-laced and official-looking Lieutenant Vale Frost into playing some Rein Dear games. Great cover for this story.
A Mika Review: Truth in Lace (Desires Entwined #3.5) by Tempeste O’Riley
Rating: 3 stars out of 5:
Truth in Lace coverWhen Alexander James Noble looks in the mirror, he sees a freak looking back at him. Despite his high grades and plans for culinary arts school after graduation, his parents would hate him if they really knew him.
Forced on a shopping trip with his twin sister, Lyric, and her friends, Alex eyes the girls jealously, longing to be able to dress like them—to be them. The constant struggle of being “gender fluid,” wrestling with an identity that seems to change daily, begins to wear on Alex. But all those questions and fears seem more manageable when his sister gives him his first skirt and lace panties.
When I say this was a shortie, this was a shortie. I didn’t know how to rate this because it’s literally under 25 pages. Its 24 pages to be exact. I liked it, because it was when Alex first understood  what being gender fluid meant. I didn’t understand the author only producing this short novella as I felt like it could have been more with this subject. What did Alex do, following this coming of age sort of moment? More of his story would have been great. I liked him and Lyric. I liked Lyric supporting him, it was a rarity at their age to understand and accept Alex with no qualms, or restrictions. It was a nice short story and with a nice prologue.
Reese Dante created this cover, and like the previous covers it had symbolism written all over it I liked this cover the best, I really went in with happiness because I thought it would be thoroughly talked about.
A MelanieM Review: One Holiday Ever After Anthology by Tere Michaels , Elle Brownlee , Elizah J. Davis
Rating: 5 stars out of 5
One Holiday Ever AFter coverThe holidays are times of reflection, celebration, and coming home to those you love and who love you back.  It’s a time to reconnect with who you are and who you hope to be.  And sometimes, if you are lucky, this is also a season of miracles, of love found and a home discovered.  From New York City, to the winter isolation of the Maine woods, to the quaint, small town charm of Idaho, the men in these stories have different holiday desires. They’re looking for familiarity or fresh starts, but they have one thing in common—their happily ever afters might be waiting in the last places they think to look.
This season I have three top anthologies, all holiday collections.  One Holiday Ever After is among them, primarily because of the excellence in stories and heart from Tere Michaels, Elle Brownlee and Elizah J. Davis.  Before One Holiday Ever After, I was really familiar with only Tere Michaels, but after the wonderful stories from Elle Brownlee and Elizah J. Davis, I have searching out to find more stories by these authors.  Did I have favorites among the three stories?  Certainly but only by the smallest of margins.  Here is the story synopsis and my shortened reviews:
Holiday Roommates by Tere Michaels
As an out of work actor Nate Brandywine needs an emergency roommate for the month of December. During a humiliating gig as a Christmas elf at a NYC department store, he meets Sean Callahan, his producer and a man struggling under the weight of a past-due loan. Sean’s desperate for a place to stay in the city for a few weeks. A month of sharing a workplace and an apartment with someone you can’t stop flirting with? Maybe the holidays won’t be so terrible after all.
I love Tere Michaels and this short story just highlights why.  The characters of Nate and Sean are so believable and vulnerable that the reader will take them into their heart.  The secondary characters are as wonderful as the primary ones and the story’s plot is a realistic one that will pull you in immediately.  A great way to start a must have anthology.
Holiday Sanctuary by Elle Brownlee
Chris Declan is trekking through the wintry wonderland of rural Maine, searching for inspiration and himself, when he’s lost in a hug snow storm. The surprise blizzard that finds him seeking refuge in Paul Bak’s secluded cabin. Paul Bak’s secluded cabin is a prime spot to research and watch birds, a perfect place for an isolated Ornithology researcher. As the snow cuts them off from all around them, making the best of being snowed in together soon becomes a comfortable friendship with fireside chats, a quaint holiday celebration, and more. But despite their growing closeness, there’s one thing they avoid—what will happen when the snow clears and the holidays end.
Elle Brownlee had me at the name of Paul’s cat, Myn.  It’s short for…well, I will let Paul explain it:
“It’s for Moamyn.” Paul steered the conversation away from, well, wherever else it might have gone. But he couldn’t stop wondering after that last comment. “A long time ago in a land far away, the aforenamed and possibly apocryphal Arabian who wrote a definitive treatise on falconry.”
Be still my heart.  An ornithologist’s love story, complete with references to the subtle glory of the grasshopper sparrow.  I adored everything about this story, from the slow exploration of Paul’s comfy cabin, full of hidden objects full of clues to Paul’s character and passion for his profession to the wry humor and intellect that is Chris.  It’s slow, wonderful, and makes an impact on the reader that they won’t be fully aware of until the end.
Holiday Homecoming by Elizah J. Davis
Gavin Anderson never thought making it as a writer in LA would be easy, but when his latest project falls through, he gives up on Hollywood and heads to Bonabri, Idaho in hopes that the peace and quiet of his childhood home will help him figure out his next move. Instead he finds Eric Nichols, his parents’ cute and charming housesitter who is there to experience the small town Christmas festivities. Gavin’s plans for quiet reflection are no match for Eric’s holiday cheer, and he soon finds himself swept up in the spirit of the season. Gavin thought his life had hit a dead end, but in coming home he finds what might be a new beginning.
Here is a story full of the 3 H’s – hope, holiday, and heartwarming.  I finished this story and just kept on smiling as I remembered scenes and dialog from Elizah J. Davis’ Holiday Homecoming.  Adorableness, thy name is Eric Nichols, a man in search of love and home who finds it unexpectedly when he housesits for his best friend’s neighbors in the quaint small town of Bonabri, Idaho.  The town of Bonabri may not actually exist outside these pages but how I wish it did!  It comes to life in all its Chrismassy, nosy glory and I loved it.  I feel the same way about the disillusioned Gavin returning home after failing in Los Angeles and his slow “return” to the human being he always was underneath.  Much like the other two stories, I wish the author had made this a full length book.  Not because this feels incomplete in any way, it doesn’t.  But because I hated to say goodbye to the characters and town once they had hold of me.    It’s a fantastic story and a great way to finish out this must have holiday anthology.
I would read this One Holiday Ever After at any time of the year.  Still in the holiday season and spirit?  Perfection.  Missing the holidays because it is (fill in the blank season)?  This anthology will pull you in and make you remember why you love the holidays so.  It’s one of the top story collections of the year and one you won’t want to miss.  I am so glad I didn’t and you will be too.  A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Best of 2014 books!Best Books of 2014
A Mika Review: Temptations of Desire (Desires Entwined, #3) by Tempeste O’Riley
Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5 :
Temptations of Desire coverAlexander James Noble is a gender fluid gay man who gave up on finding Mister Right a long time ago. He’s not asking for much, though. He just wants a guy who loves all of him and appreciates his feminine form too.
At the local LGBTQ center where Alex regularly volunteers, he meets Dal Sayer, an officer of the Milwaukee PD. Because he’s been rejected one too many times, Alex doesn’t trust the huge cop and the interest he shows in him, but once Dal sets his mind on something, he goes all out. Pushing aside his preconceived notions, Alex opens up just a little and soon caves.
From their first date—while dealing with his father’s failing health and his parents’ demands for him to settle down and have children—Dal never takes his eyes off his goal of making Alex his. But proving to Alex he isn’t like all the men who couldn’t see him for who he truly was and only wanted to hide him away is harder than he thought.
Temptations of Desire is book 3 in the series,Desires Entwined, and I have finally fallen in love with one of the couples. I adore Dal and Alex. They both were a breath of fresh air. One of the biggest themes in the book was gender fluidity, something I love reading about in books. I honestly don’t think we get enough characters like it. This book coincides with things from the previous book we get to see certain things from Dal’s perspective.
Of course both guys had their issues with being in a relationship, but the thing that got me was they “TALKED” like grown people do. When one, had an issue he didn’t over react, he waited so he could talk it out. Sure no relationship is perfect. Dal has a great relationship with his brother Rhys, but they are totally different. He was such a sweetheart, gentle and completely calm whenever he approached Alex. I thought Alex was skittish at times, but it made sense seeing as he was victim of abuse before on multiple accounts. One thing I loved about his was his determination, and strength. Alex was amazingly strong, he didn’t waver on his feelings sure he was unsure about how Dal was going to react to him being gender fluid.
I wish this book was much longer, and I appreciated the epilogue but I wanted more of them. I want to know how their little family is going to be. I want to know their feelings of living in Chicago and with each other. I’m very happy with the outcome of this book. Hopefully book 4 is based on Kai; he is one character who I really wanted more time of all. I wouldn’t read these out of order, but this book was much better. I really enjoyed the writing and the relationship.
The cover artist Reese Dante. Like the previous covers it had symbolism written all over it. I can appreciate the cover based on the feelings both mc had when the scarf was presented in the book. I liked the simplicity and acceptance of it as well.
A Mika Review: Desires’ Guardian (Desires Entwined #2) by Tempeste O’Riley
Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5
Desires Guardian coverMost people see Chase Manning as the party-boy twink he seems on the surface. Only James, Chase’s BFF, knows the depth of his loyalty and the extent of the wounds Chase carries inside. When Chase meets Rhys Sayer things don’t go well, but he can’t shake his attraction to the huge, sexy man.
 Rhys is a man of contradictions and fear—a strange combination for a PI and bodyguard. He’s in a bad place emotionally when he sets eyes on Chase for the first time. When Chase puts the moves on him, Rhys insults him, thwarting any possibility of a relationship. Rhys doesn’t see himself as a complicated man, but he dreads the very kind of connection he desires.
 Just as they’re trying to overcome their uncertainties, Chase is put in harm’s way. Luckily Rhys and their friends have all the right talents to help Rhys save the man of his dreams.
While this was a big step up from Designs of Desire (Desires Entwined, #1), it still left me unsure of some things about the characters and their relationship. I liked Rhys and Chase from Designs of Desire. I honestly felt like this was one big role reversal in this book. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not basing it on both of their physical appearances either. I felt like Chase’s character in the first story was so approachable and happy all the times. I understand people aren’t always happy and he was a secondary character. It wasn’t alot for me to base much on Rhy’s character because he just seemed like a body guard.
I liked the story a lot. However it felt like the mystery was just thrown in there for aesthetics purposes only. I understand Rhys needing a reason for Chase being in his life because of his work, but I felt like there were other ways it could have happened.
My biggest issue with the story was the lack of communication. Come on, you want me to believe that you two weren’t able to talk about why you weren’t talking to each other after 1 night of coming together. I didn’t feel like these two would have that issue. They just seemed to fix their issues magically. What did Rhys exactly do, because based on few terms he used I felt like the “issue” didn’t get rectified.
I did like how protective Chase friends were, oh my goodness. It was like the Twink Gang, they were all over threatening Rhys about treating their friend right. I appreciated it a ton, I loved how both guys had supportive families on both sides. Rhys parents were amazing, and sure his dad giving Dal an ultimatum hurt but we’ll see where that leads in Temptations of Desire (Desires Entwined, #3) . With the intensity of these two, I was happy with the ending. They both wanted to pace their relationship and just get to know each other well.
I recommend this for people reading the series; we do get to see some of Seth and James from Designs of Desire (Desire Entwined #1). I definitely noticed the author’s growth as far as the writing went.
Reese Dante created this cover, and like both previous covers it had symbolism written all over it. The cuff meant something, I would have liked bikes instead but I could appreciate the cuff based on the “mystery thriller” aspect of the book.
