A PaulB Review: Living Again by Brynn Stein

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Living Again coverAfter a car accident breaks Daniel’s arm and good leg, he must rely on nurse Jonah for the next couple of months while he recuperates. They must move past both past memories and present troubles in order to build their future together with Jonah’s son.

Daniel Larson wakes up in the hospital after a serious car accident in which he suffers a concussion, broken arm and broken leg. Having lost his other leg in an explosion in Afghanistan, Daniel wonders how he will cope until he heals. His Uncle Lawrence has contacted a home nursing agency to help Daniel deal with life until he is recovered. Uncle Larry is upset when the nurse that is sent is Jonah Thacker, a male nurse.

Daniel prides himself on being able to live his life despite his disability. At first he resents having someone taking care of his basic needs. However, he soon realizes that he will not survive without help for the next few weeks until his arm and leg heal enough for him to return to his life as a college professor. And if that help comes in the form of hunky nurse Jonah, who is he to complain?

As the two grow closer together, various obstacles come in the way. First, Uncle Larry does everything within his power to get another nurse assigned to Daniel. Uncle Larry has promised Daniel’s father that he would take care of Daniel. However, he does not approve of Daniel’s homosexuality. A male nurse would he figures would be too much temptation. Second, they want to maintain a sense of professionalism, at least until Jonah is no longer Daniel’s nurse.

Daniel is drawn further to Jonah when he meets Jonah’s nephew/son Ethan. Ethan was born with birth defects due to his mother (Jonah’s sister) being exposed to a virus in Africa as a medical resident. Ethan was born with malformed legs and heart problems. His mother dies nine months after he was born in an accident and Jonah becomes his primary care giver.

As the relationship between Daniel and Jonah grows, both most deal with issues concerning past relationships. Daniel lost his boyfriend Tom in the explosion that took his leg while Jonah was rejected by Ted when he became Ethan’s de facto father. To complicate things more, Ethan’s health problems become worse and Uncle Larry does whatever he can to keep the two apart. They realize that they should make a go of the relationship, but is it too late to build this family?

I liked the slow build of the romance and the angst each of the characters felt as they move toward each other. You can tell they have been hurt in the past and are slow to move onto a new relationship for fear of being hurt again. This of course leads to misunderstandings on both their parts as to each other’s motives. However, they do work together to thwart Uncle Larry’s attempts to keep them apart. They also find comfort in one another during Ethan’s health scares and what finally brings them together for good.

Jonah’s son Ethan is a well written character. His precociousness and love of life despite all his health problems warms your heart. I wonder if Ms. Stein drew on her work as a special needs teacher to help her craft Ethan’s vivacious personality.

If you are looking for steamy sex scenes, this is not the book for you. Most of the bedroom activities take part off page and are only alluded to for the most part. However, if you are looking for a well crafted angst filled romance, I would give this book a read.

The cover art by Bree Archer is well done. The models selected for Jonah, Ethan and Daniel on the top half are what I would picture them to be. The bottom half shows a silhouette of Daniel walking on a boardwalk using crutches instead of his prosthetic leg.

♢♢♢♢♢♢♢♢♢♢♢♢♢

Interviewing Lissa Kasey!

STRW-. You clearly love Anime? Why? What do you love about it?

Lissa: I love the intensity of the plot and the art. A lot of writing comes from showing emotion through words that are not obvious. Anime/manga is like that only showing emotion though pictures. I wish I could draw because I would be a mangaka.

STRW-  How do you feel your love for Anime impacts your writing and characters?

Lissa:  A lot of my fight scenes are very “anime” style. I picture what it would look like in an anime and write it that way. My romances are often the same as manga/anime, the seme usually chasing the uki until the uki realizes he needs the seme.

STRW-. Favorite anime characters and stories?

Lissa:  Too many to list really. I think my favorite story of all time is a short manga called Fake Fur by Satomi Yamagata.

STRW-. What was the inspiration for Hidden Gem?

Lissa: I started working on it really not knowing where I was going to go with it. I knew I wanted a different take on shifters. I had a slew of medical problems and thought, hey what if all this guessing the doctors are doing lead to something else (like shifter). And of course the idea grew from there.

STRW– Do you have a favorite character in this stories and who is it?

Lissa: Aki. He’s not me at all. He’s very feminine, loves shoes, and really needs someone to boss him around. He was so outside of my comfort zone that I fell in love with him. I hope everyone else does too.

STRW-. What resources/background did you draw on to create this universe?

Lissa:  For this book I stepped into the world of BDSM. Something that terrified me. I actually found a very nice guy who lives the lifestyle 24/7 that answered some very stupid questions. He’s got a dedication in the front of the book for being so patient with me. The rest just comes from my head and some minor Holocaust research.

STRW:  Favorite genre to write in?

Lissa:  Contemporary urban fantasy. I like things that are dark and edgy, filled with monsters (who aren’t always the ones with fangs), and complicated story lines that keep me coming back.

STRW-What do you find sexy in a character?

Lissa:  Well sexy is an odd term for me since I identify as asexual. I don’t find any of them “sexy” per say. More appealing is the personality, originality and confidence of a character. Not all of them have to be super heroes. I like the guy who is a little scared to step forward too, so long as he knows it and faces it if he has too.

STRW- What childhood book or story had the greatest impact on you as a child and writer today?

Lissa:  Bunnicula. Isn’t that crazy? Bunny vampires. Loved those books. Hated to read until I discovered them. Thought all reading was about stupid things like Timmy falling down a well. I couldn’t identify with Old Yeller or Where the Red Fern Grows, but talking cats, dogs, and bunnies who suck the life from veggies? That was totally my deal.

STRW- Not crazy at all.  I love Bunnicula.  What’s next for Lissa Kasey?

Lissa:  I’m finishing up my first contemporary. No supernatural in this one and I tell you that’s been hard. I also hope to finish Dominion 5 this year which is Sam’s story about about 50% done. I’ve been mapping out the sequel to Hidden Gem, which will be Paris’ story, then off to Candy’s. I hope to keep writing like mad.

Hidden Gem Blurb

Misaki “Aki” Itou is a psi—a person with mutated DNA granting him psychic abilities. Heʼs also a contracted companion—a whore. It may not be the perfect profession, but having a roof over his head, food to eat, and not being subjected to torture is a dream come true. He is the top companion at the Hidden Gem, and it makes him enough money to buy the prettiest, most sparkly shoes he can find. Shane McNaughton is an Irishman who survived the Third World War and works as a cop. Head of Missing Persons, heʼs good at finding people, but after the plague of the Third mutated his DNA, he has a hard time letting anyone see the monster inside. Heʼs been paying for Akiʼs services for two years, both the psi and the sexual kind, but he wants more from the companion. Shane needs Akiʼs ability to see into another personʼs past to track down a serial killer murdering the children of rich and powerful men, but the more they work together, the clearer it becomes that they are linked through a darker past than either of them realizes. 978-1-63216-198-7 Paperback 978-1-63216-199-4 eBook Pages: 246 Retail Price: $14.99 paperback/$6.99 eBook

First Glimpse by Lissa Kasey

Aki swept up a bottle of McNaughton’s favorite scotch and headed toward the broad Irishman. The man’s shoulders were arched forward, back tense, hair a sexy mess, and face covered with a couple days’ growth. Obviously the cop was on a difficult case. The detective hadn’t yet asked for him, just for his usual meal—almost bloody steak with a baked potato.

“You look like you could use a drink,” Aki told him as he slid into the chair beside him. He turned an empty glass over and poured three fingers of the golden liquid.

McNaughton sighed, his dark eyes roaming over Aki’s small body, platinum blond hair pulled up and styled with sparkling pins, see-thru knit top, and super-short skirt, then over his bare legs down to the gleaming heels. The shoes were a silver mesh of crystals that slid up just past his ankles. A gift from McNaughton. The cop sucked in a deep breath and slid his hand over the covered part of Aki’s thigh. He knew better than to touch bare flesh to bare flesh. Aki was a cognitive psi, could see entire lives of horrors with a single touch, and he was sure McNaughton’s past was filled with a lot of nasty memories.

“Wish you had time for me tonight. But I’ve got a feeling you’re booked up tight.” He glanced back at the room bustling with companions and potential customers. Aki was the only psi in the room, his pale-pupiled blue eyes telling the world that he was different.

“I’m sure Bart can fit you in.” Aki’s eyes scanned the room until he found his boss, who was engaged with negotiations with another client. “Looks like you need some trouble eased tonight.” He leaned in close enough his breath ran across McNaughton’s cheek.

McNaughton turned his head, lips nearly close enough to touch. “Would love a bit of time with your shine.”

“Words like honey, McNaughton.”

The cop flashed him one of his rare, heart-stopping smiles then nodded as Bart appeared beside them. “Table seven is ready, Aki. Number one.” Bart told him.

Aki grabbed Bart’s wrist with a gloved hand. “The cop needs some time tonight. You can make that happen, right?”

“Of course.” Bart nodded to them and took Aki’s vacated seat and Aki made his way to his next client of the evening. There were only two services Aki performed. A hand job and a blow job, one and two. This client wanted number one—which meant he was cheap since rarely did anyone ask for a hand job from him. But his prices were astronomical anyway.

“Hello,” Aki smiled at the man as he slid into the chair opposite him. The client was dressed nice, button down shirt, pressed pants, but he was bald and a little heavier around the waist. A politician probably. “If you’re ready we can head upstairs.”
The man barely spoke, but he leered, eyes tracing over Aki’s form more like he was cattle than a night of entertainment. Even in his worst moments McNaughton had never done that. It wasn’t appreciation, but something darker. Aki sighed internally and hoped this would be fast. He knew a thousand ways to get a man off in minutes. Something about him just set off Aki’s creep radar.

“I hear some wait months for the pleasure of your time,” the man said with slightly accented speech.

Not usually. The only ones who waited weeks were because their schedule and Aki’s conflicted or because they’d done something to upset him or Bart. Most clients got in within a few days if not the same day of requesting Aki’s time. And regulars were always given precedence over someone not yet vetted like this client. “If I don’t please you I can see if Preston or Royce is available.”
“I was hoping for Candy originally.”

Was always good to be told he was second choice. Aki gritted his teeth. “Candy only serves a special kind of client. And he does have a wait list.” Mostly because he took clients who wanted a little more kink than any of the other male companions preferred. Aki was going to recommend this client be removed from the premises after the service was over.

“I guess you’ll have to do then. Won’t you?” He gave Aki a chilling smile.

Bastard. Aki got up from his seat and offered his gloved hand to the man who followed closely. They’d reached the stairs when the man grabbed him, yanked Aki against him and shoved his hand up Aki’s skirt, groping him and sending him into a spiral of nightmares.

A dark room. The metallic stink of blood. Screams. The sound of knives being sharpened. Metal bars clanking. Crying. Pain. The music of an ice cream truck. How odd. It was all ripped away a moment later, but Aki’s stomach was already heaving. The small plate of fruit and yogurt he’d had for dinner was not going to stay down.

Someone carried him unceremoniously to the private companion bathroom near the kitchen and set him in front of the toilet just as the mash of fruits and dairy came up. Aki heaved a couple of minutes, his brain swirling with the images that thankfully began to fade just as quickly as they’d come. With any luck he’d be able to brush his teeth, wash his face and go about his work day.

He glanced up to find Manny, the head of security standing at the door. McNaughton knelt beside Aki. Had held his hair back and even used his jacket to cover Aki’s bottom. The skirts really were too short.

“Bart is already having the guy removed. He should never have touched you like that. Sorry I didn’t get to you quicker,” Manny told Aki. “Grateful to you, Detective, for responding so quickly.”

McNaughton stroked Aki’s back, using the soft material of the sweater to run circles over his spine. “Want to talk about it?”
Aki sighed. “Same crap. Just weird. Darkness, crying, smelled blood. Heard knives.” He shook his head. “The guy could work at a butcher for all I know. The memories get so jumbled.” Often with his own horrific past. “Thought I heard a kid. And bars rattling like in a jail. And the music from an ice cream truck.”

McNaughton nodded like it made perfect sense to him and helped Aki get up and make his way to the sink where there were spare toothbrushes and endless varieties of paste. The cop leaned over and kissed Aki’s hair. “Gotta go. I’ll have Bart reschedule me sometime this week though. Love that you wore my shoes.” He was gone a moment later.

Aki cleaned up and made his way back to work. At least the night was almost over. He was sad that McNaughton hadn’t stayed. Would have liked to see that smile another time or two. At least the rest of the night flew by without incident, even if the detective didn’t return.

“Sleeping with me tonight?” Candy asked as he stripped out of their work clothes, leaving just a pair of bright pink underwear and crawled into bed. His purple hair was already brushed and eyes heavy with sleep.

“Please,” Aki whispered. He stripped off everything but his underwear too. After putting his shoes and pins away, he washed his face.

“Heard that guy touched you. What a jerk.”

“He wanted you to begin with.” Aki curled up beside his best friend.

Candy flicked off the light. “I would have brought him down a few pegs.”

Aki smiled, but he didn’t want to think of the horrible man at all. Those memories just needed to go away. He had enough of his own to battle with each day. He fell asleep hoping to wake up with less nasty memories each day.

The next afternoon Aki was up early and at Artie’s for breakfast—best 24/7 diner in the area—when McNaughton arrived. The man sat down at his table without asking and pushed a pair of slim, jeweled, yellow flat sandals into Aki’s hands. “What’s this for?” Aki asked.

He just shook his head. He threw a stack of cash on the table and motioned to the waitress. “Anything he wants is on me.” He then got up from the table and headed for the door.

“Well that was weird,” Aki said to LuAnn, the waitress.

She pointed at the Vid screen. “He had a rough night. Caught the guy who was killing kids.” The Vidscreen was turned to the news. Something about a man named the “Ice Cream Killer” had been captured. Apparently he used an ice cream truck to lure kids in, kidnapped them, raped them and killed them. Real monster.

A picture popped up of the guy. It was the client from the Gem. Maybe that’s why McNaughton was at the Gem. No matter what he hoped the detective visited him tonight. The new yellow shoes would need a new skirt to match…

A MelanieM Review: Solitude by Anna Martin and Tia Fielding

Rating:  4. 25 stars out of 5

Solitude coverGael Torres met Liam Barton when he costarred in an adult movie for Woodspring Manor Entertainment, the company that employed them as actors for their porn films.  Liam, also known as Lithium in the adult film industry, had just signed up with Woodspring although he was already a legend in the porn industry.  Gael, known as Gabriel Knightly, was already an established star at Woodspring for over 5 years.  In their first scene together, sparks flew, their attraction to each other igniting far past what the script and acting called for.

But obstacles were already in the way to any relationship between them.  Gael was living with John, known to his fans as Johnny Depth, and it was well known that  they were  a popular established couple and good for Woodspring’s image and advertising.  And Lithium?  The secrets he was hiding were huge, and one night he simply disappeared.  No note, no phone calls.  Gone.

Shocked, Gael waits as the rumors pile up, many saying that Lithium had died, a notion Gael couldn’t accept.  Determined to find Lithium and extract some answers, Gael still wasn’t prepared for what he finds when the missing Lithium is located.

Liam Barton has left his identity as Lithium behind when he fled LA for the ski slopes of Solitude Ski Resort in remote Utah.  Haunted by his past, burdened by circumstances he left behind in L.A., Liam craves the peace and isolated existence found in this small town.  The only thing he misses is the actor he thinks he can’t have, Gabriel Knightly.

When Gael arrives at Solitude to find Liam alive if not completely happy, the shock is almost overwhelming.  Gael is determined to get his answers and show Liam the depth of his feelings.  Liam has built a fortress to hide behind.  Can Gael break  down his walls so both men can find the love and relationship they have been dreaming about?  Or will Liam’s past destroy any chances they might have for a future together?

What a terrific love story!  Solitude by Anna Martin and Tia Fielding works on many levels, as a romance, a study of porn actors and their industry, and as a plot storyline that  relays the fact that even a HFN commitment takes work and compromises in the name of love.  All of these elements and more combine to bring a realistic and even handed look into an industry (and actors) that seldom are given such a non-judgmental point of view.  Love and romance are on display in this story in many forms, including the deep love and caring relationship of Gael’s parents,  great secondary characters whose loving relationship acts as a support and example for those who know them.

Authors Martin and Fielding use characters Liam Barton and Gael Torres to show the different facets to the people who act in porn film and the various types of adult film companies who produce the prodigious amounts of porn filmed each year.   It starts off with the company Woodspring Manor Entertainment, a firm whose owners like Preston, take care of their performers, from contracts to health insurance to housing.  Woodspring and its owners represent the  best of the adult film industry.  Among its established stars are Gael (Gabriel Knightly) and Johnny (Johnny Depth), a “couple” favored for their relationship as well as their gorgeous bodies and acting abilities.  Gael Torres is a porn star in the business because he loves sex and is good at it.  He comes from a loving and open minded family who only want their son to be happy and aren’t ashamed of his profession.

Gael Torres is that person you infrequently hear about…the well adjusted porn star.  That such a person exists is a certainty but one the media seldom  picks up on.  Gael is a marvelous character whose believable and appealing personality makes the story and romance. And he comes with one of the loveliest set of parents around, his Finnish mother Leena and Spanish father, Diego, secondary characters who light up the page whenever they make an appearance.

On the opposite side of spectrum of the actors in the adult film industry is Liam Barton, known as Lithium.  He represents those who comes from abusive backgrounds, men accompanied by their own painful set of circumstances, a reality of this world as well.  His background?  That of a ultra conservative Latter day Saints family he escaped from but barely.   The background created for him by the authors feels as complicated, haunted and real as Gael’s does open, happy, and accepting.  The pairing of these two dissimilar men helps to create the drama and believable relationship dynamics that the pair must work through. And all the adjustments and compromises they achieve makes their romance and love seem not only viable but heartwarming and real.

The narrative begins with Liam already in Solitude, Utah but then it switches back and forth between Gael and Liam, the past and the present.  The effect that changeover has upon the story can feel jumbled at times but the story is such a good one that an uneven narrative can be somewhat overlooked.   These are easy character to learn to care about and the other characters in their orbit are just as believable as they are.

I absolutely recommend Solitude by Anna Martin and Tia Fielding.  The romance is complicated and heartfelt, the characters believable and compelling, and the story plot marvelous all the way to the end.  And did I say it was sexy and hot too?  Well, it is!   Grab it up today and find out for yourself!

Cover Art by Reese Dante  is lovely even if it doesn’t exactly speak to the plot and characters.

Barb, the Zany Old Lady, Review: Wolf in Gucci Loafers by Tara Lain

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

WolfinGucciLoafersLGSequel to “The Pack and the Panther”, this is Lindsey’s story. Lindsey—flamboyant, wealthy, half-human/half-wolf, destined to live his life without a partner because wolves don’t tolerate gay men or humans, and gay human men? Never. And forget having a human mate! Wolf code forbids him from ever revealing the existence of werewolves to humans. He would be put to death, and what they would do to the human would be beyond unthinkable.

When he smells a delicious and intoxicating human scent one night and follows its trail to the sexiest human he’s ever laid eyes on, he knows immediately that his wolf would want to dominate this man and that he can never allow that to happen. When he finally meets the guy, he finds out Seth Zabrowsky is a cop helping the FBI with the recent string of kidnappings of wealthy children, and he knows that he can’t ever have his heart’s desire. A cop would be so very, very bad.

When the governor’s daughter is kidnapped, Lindsey rushes to his friend’s aide. Lindsey Vanessen and his wealthy family have supported the governor financially, and Lindsey and the man have become friends. It was the governor who actually helped Lindsey and his best friend Cole get Cole’s husband back when he was kidnapped in “The Pack and the Panther”. What Lindsey doesn’t tell Seth and the FBI is that he recognizes the warehouse where the little girl is being held, and he takes it upon himself to rescue her, but he does it in his street vigilante, little-old-lady costume. Yes, Lindsey is known on the streets as the Granny, a woman who has thwarted rapists and unofficially helped the cops cut back on late night crime.

After the kidnapping, Seth seeks out Lindsey’s help to mingle with the wealthy set in the hopes that he can spot something that will lead him to the ringleader of the kidnappers. It’s during this time that he and Lindsey can no longer deny their attraction, and they seek a rough and tumble alpha fight for dominance in their sex. And, not too amazingly, they are both very happy with the fact that their very dominant natures have found a complementary partner. Of course, true love never runs smoothly and Seth finds out about Granny, insulting Lindsey and breaking it off with him before it goes any further. There’s more intrigue and angst along the way in this book, with the men getting together and breaking up a few times before a crazy kidnap and rescue scene that reveals Lindsey’s true form to Seth.

There’s a concurrent subplot about a young orphan who Lindsey immediately warms to and feels a bond with. The young boy is unaware that he’s a wolf about to undergo his first change, but thanks to Lindsey’s intervention, he’s accepted into Lindsey’s family and his pack in time to make a difference.

I really liked the push/pull of the guys’ relationship in this story, and both characters were well-developed and likeable. In fact, I really liked Lindsey in the first book and loved him even more in this one. There were some major holes in the mystery, principally surrounding a double kidnapping where one victim was rescued and failed to inquire about the other victim until the next day. Since they were on a date together when the kidnapping occurred, my expectation was that there would be some mention of the other man by the victim, the cops or someone. I can’t go into greater detail because it would be a major spoiler but that made this section seem off, and if the author’s intent was to direct our attention to the possible kidnapper through that awkward situation, it was overkill. It was already easy to figure out long before that.

Since the MCs do get their HEA, and a very nice one indeed, and I loved the MCs, the basic storyline, and the pace of the story, I’m happy to recommend this one to my m/m friends who are looking for a light mystery with some very hot characters who spend some very hot time between the sheets.

Cover art by Aaron Anderson.  it was hot and colorful and fit the story perfectly with it’s depiction of Jeremy in his flamboyant clothing as well as his wolf persona.

K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, where the purchase of a ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot. In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings – writing about men in love was even hotter…
K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career.

The laptop still has no idea of what hit it… it only knows that it wants a rest, please. And it now has to get used to the idea that where K.C goes, it goes.

Parker Williams:

Parker Williams began to write as a teen, but never showed his work to anyone. As he grew older, he drifted away from writing, but his love of the written word moved him to reading. A chance encounter with an author changed the course of his life as she encouraged him to never give up on a dream. With the help of some amazing friends, he rediscovered the joy of writing, thanks to a community of writers who have become his family.

Parker firmly believes in love, but is also of the opinion that anything worth having requires work and sacrifice (plus a little hurt and angst, too). The course of love is never a smooth one, and Happily Ever After always has a price tag.

 Damian’s Discipline Excerpt:

Damian

I LOVED it when it was evening and all was quiet and peaceful. No traffic noise intruded into the house, and in the lounge, the only sound was the slow ticking of the clock on the mantelpiece. Give me a mechanical clock any day. Not that I had anything against more modern timepieces, but there was something soothing about the sound. The clock had been my grandmother’s, and I took loving care of it, making sure it was oiled and wound. Right then my evening was perfect: the tick of the clock, a glass of Cabernet on the table next to me, and a worn, hardcover Sherlock Holmes novel in my hands. I’d lost count of how many times I’d read The Hound of the Baskervilles, but re-reading a favorite book was a warm, comforting experience. The wine created a warm glow inside me. I took another sip.

And then my phone rang.

The temptation to ignore its clamoring call was huge. I was happy, comfortable, and anyone ringing me at home during the evening had to want something. All my friends knew my routines, especially since Oliver….

I closed my eyes. I could almost hear that edge of amusement in his voice. “You going to answer that, Sir?” And yes, I could see the gleam in his eye as he awaited my reaction, tense in nervous anticipation. Brat loved pushing my buttons. With a sigh, I picked up the call.

“Damian? It’s Leo. We need your help.”

I placed the wine on the table. “What can I do for you?” My interest was piqued immediately. It had been quite a while since the co-owner of my BDSM club had called me at home.

“Sorry to disturb you, but you were the first person I could think of. We have a boy. He’s nineteen, and he needs help.”

A MelanieM Review: The Path by Ariel Tachna

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

The Path coverBenicio Quispe is finally fulfilling the dream of his life, he is about to become a guide on the Inca Trail, a goal he has striven for from the moment he heard his grandfather’s stories as a young boy in the mountains of Peru.  Benicio has just been hired by Huaman Travel, the top travel agency in Cusco, Peru and has been assigned Alberto Salazar, a seasoned and respected guide as his mentor.   Benecio is overjoyed to find that  he has so much in common with Alberto but they share far more than a passion for the Inca Trail.

Alberto Salazar learned a long time ago to hide his sexuality from all but his employer and friend, Miguel Ramirez.  The small town he lives in and those around him, outside his closest friends, are unaware that he is gay. They all just assume his profession as a guide keeps him from forming lasting relationships.   While that may be true, Alberto feels that to find someone who understands and shares his passions for the Incan culture as well as his passion for men….well, Alberto feels that will never happen.  Until Benicio Quispe enters his life.

Benicio and Alberto find their attachment to each other growing deeper the longer they spend with each other on the trail and outside of work.  But the fear of discovery and losing the respect of those they need to do their job as well as the friends and family around them keep them from acting on theie feelings for each other.  It takes a group of old friends and their anniversary journey to Machu Picchu to convince Benicio and Alberto that it is worth reaching for the one thing lacking in their lives…a loving relationship and lasting partnership.

“The risks on the trail are easy compared to finding a path through the challenges keeping them apart.”

I have always wanted to hike the Inca Trail to see the Sun Gate and the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu.  For many reasons I never got there. Until now.  Ariel Tachna’s amazing novel, The Path, finally made that possible.  Ariel Tachna took this journey in July of 2013,  The sights, sounds and experiences of the Inca Trail must have imprinted itself deeply upon this author because it translated into a story powerful enough to transport readers on to the Inca Trail itself through descriptions and imagery so vivid and compelling that I felt I was another traveler among them as they set out for 4 days of arduous hiking and inspirational wonders.

Tachna’s story allowed me to hike with a group of people up the steep trail to Inti Punki. Our knees and musclues groaned and breezing was labored at that high elevation. And every step of the way up the Monkey Trail to the rocks that form the Sun Gate that overlooks Machu Picchu was exhausting. But then to sit and watch in awe as the sun paints the sacred city in golden lights as it has for centuries?  Incredible.  More than once I found myself in tears of joy and discovery over section after section of a book who celebrated the ancient past of Mayan culture while continuing a journey of the present and future with two men who share their passions for the Inca Trail and culture as well as a deep abiding love for each other and life  as a trail  guide.

Ariel Tachna has done this before, steeped her readers in various cultures and landscapes both familiar and foreign but never have I felt so connected, so involved in the past and present as I did here in The Path.  The Inca Trail once stretched from Cusco to Machu Picchu and in this story the author takes her characters and readers on that pathway once more.  Tachna brings us intimately into the lives of the Peruvian people, especially those from the villages at elevations close to the heavens.  Benecio’s home of Cancha Cancha, itself a small village, in the mountains at four thousand feet, a place for the few people, guinea pigs and llamas who can tolerate that high elevation.  We walk through their homes made of mud and brick, through the characters and scenes, we taste the corn based beer of chica where each person is likely to have their own more favored recipe.  We feel a part of these peoples lives and a part of this story.

I loved all the people I met in The Path.  Benecio is believable and authentic as the Incan ruins he loves.  The author brings us into his life on his last day as a non professional on the trail.  Benicio is hiking the trail and listening and watching his guide, taking notes and thinking how he would handle the tour. And yet still Benicio is overcome with emotion as he sits and waits for the sun to rise over the tops of the mountains at Inti Punki.  Here is a sample:

Prologue

BENICIO QUISPE took a deep breath as he stood at the base of the Monkey Steps and stared up at the last section of the climb before Machu Picchu. They had been hiking for more than an hour already, with the sky slowly lightening over their heads, but the sun had yet to make an appearance over the highest peaks. Sheltered between the mountains as they were, they would not see the sun for another hour or more. Atop the Sun Gate, though, the view would be entirely different.

Gripping his walking sticks more firmly and ignoring the pain in his knees from overuse, he set his foot on the first step and began to climb.

His thighs burned by the time he reached the final step. He was glad there were only fifty steps in this flight, because they were too narrow and too steep to climb with the typical zigzag walk that had made the first three days of the hike bearable.

He paused for a moment to appreciate the clean lines of the Sun Gate. He had studied it, along with all the other Inca remains along the trail, as part of his preparation for becoming a guide, but this was the first time he had ever seen it in person.

The sun peeked over the mountain behind him, reminding him of the time and driving him forward so he would not miss the highlight of the trip and the whole reason for the three-thirty wake-up call that morning.

He stepped beneath the arch and froze, heedless of anyone on the trail behind him.

Machu Picchu lay spread out in the valley before him, cloaked in shadow still, though the sun?s rays had begun their descent into the valley.

All his life he had seen pictures of it, even before he started studying to be a guide. He had learned about it in school, seen pictures his friends and fellow guides had taken, but standing there and seeing it with his own eyes after three days of hiking stole his breath. His eyes prickled with tears as he forced his legs to work while, around him, other hikers snapped photos.

His guide began to give information about the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu and the final leg of the hike. Benicio knew he should pay attention to what the other man was saying. In a few weeks, he would be the one standing there with tourists looking to him for information, but the voice was a wordless drone in his ears. He had attention only for the holy city and the inexorable march of the sun?s rays down the mountainside. The sunlight reached stone and turned it golden, and Benicio could only imagine what it must have looked like during the reign of the Inca, when the city would have been filled with real gold. Even now, a ruin instead of the vibrant center of worship it had once been, the city captivated him.

That’s just a sampling from the prologue and already the magic of these characters and story has you in thrall.  The pull  only gets stronger the longer the time you spend on the trail with Benecio and Alberto.

Alberto is as strong a character as Benecio, although in a totally different way.  Whereas Benecio is still so much a part of the mountain culture (he specks Quechua his native tongue along with Spanish), Alberto is more worldly. He is older, a seasoned guide of 10 years.  Alberto is also gay and familiar with being discreet about his passions and hookups unlike Benecio who has known he was gay but had little opportunity to explore his sexuality in his remote village.  The contrast between the two men helps Tachna bring her readers all the different worlds connecting on the Trail, two ostensibly Peruvian yet so unalike.  And its not just the differences between Benecio and Alberto but those of the tourists themselves whether they are from a large Indian family on holiday (so funny and telling culturally) or a group from the States returning to hike the path together once more as part of a larger celebration.

The Path is a journey not to be missed.  Ariel Tachna brings alive people, places and cultures you might not actually ever meet or travel to but when you have finished this story you feel like you have made a once in a life time pilgrimage to places that will continue to awe and inspire.  An incredible trip taken with a author I can’t recommend highly enough.

I read this book twice, and each time its magic grew as did its hold on my imagination and heart.  The Path by Ariel Tachna is definitely one of the best books of 2014.  It’s one I highly recommend and will pick up to read  again.  I hope you will do the same.

Book Name: Key of Behliseth
Author Name: Lou Hoffmann

Author Bio:

Lou Hoffmann, a mother and grandmother now, has carried on her love affair with books for more than half a century, and she hasn’t even made a dent in the list of books she’d love to read—partly because the list keeps growing as more and more fascinating tales are told in written form. She reads factual things—books about physics and stars and fractal chaos, but when she wants truth, she looks for it in quality fiction. Through all that time she’s written stories of her own, but she’s come to be a published author only as a johnnie-come-lately. Lou loves other kinds of beauty as well, including music and silence, laughter and tears, youth and age, sunshine and storms, forests and fields, rivers and seas. Proud to be a bisexual woman, she’s seen the world change and change back and change more in dozens of ways, and she has great hope for the freedom to love in the world the youth of today will create in the future.

Key of Behliseth

Key of Behliseth Blurb:

On his way to meet a fate he’d rather avoid, homeless gay teen Lucky steps through a wizard’s door and is caught up in a whirlwind quest and an ancient war. He tries to convince himself that his involvement with sword fights, magic, and interworld travel is a fluke, and that ice-breathing dragons and fire-breathing eagles don’t really exist. But with each passing hour, he remembers more about who he is and where he’s from, and with help, he begins to claim his power.

Lucky might someday rule a nation, but before he can do that, he must remember his true name, accept his destiny, and master his extraordinary abilities. Only then can he help to banish the evil that has invaded earth and find his way home—through a gateway to another world.

 Exclusive Key of Behliseth Excerpt:

The Witch-Mortaine’s tower rose from that boulder-strewn plain, rooted between high ridges and veiled in spells.

At this hour, the entire crater lay in shadow, but even in the half-light and with only one eye, Hench’s vision was sharp. He could see cars sliding along the city’s roads, trailing columns of red and white like snakes of light. He imagined the people piloting them, tired Earthborns who wished they’d already arrived wherever they were going.

He wondered about their lives. Did they have any kind of magic? Had they ever had it? Had any of them possessed magic and love and a good life and lost it all? He wondered whether their cars would pile up in a panicked crash if they but once saw through the magical veils and glimpsed the deadly crystal beauty of the spire from which he gazed.

He worked his shoulders into a painful shrug, wishing he could rid himself of the black shadow that weighed them down, a shadow he himself had created out of anger and hate. He shook his head in persistent disbelief that it had overtaken him so easily, so fast.

He’d committed himself to vengeance, and the shadow had been born, a larval vampire that fed on his spirit, consumed his strength and joy. It grew stronger with every cruel choice and every time he lashed out, burning with rage. It fouled his every step, turned even his best intentions to evil end, drained him of substance as surely as if it had torn his heart and bled him dry. The remains had become a joke, fool to a fiendish witch, tool in the hands of the person he most hated.

He leaned against the rail, half wishing the steel would vanish and let him go. The wind thrummed against the glass and steel of the spire, but he ignored it. Whatever shame Earth’s night winds might hiss into his ear, they couldn’t carry the single word he should not have forgotten. Only the Gods’ Breath knew that name, and he had little hope ever to stand again in that sweet dawn wind of the Ethran Sunlands.

Interview for Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

By Sophie Bonaste

STRW:   You admit to being a fan of Harry Potter and Star Wars, the supernatural and the scify! Is that your preferred genre to write in?

Sophie Bonaste:  I don’t really have a preferred genre. With every finished project, I feel the need to move onto something completely different. It’s because of that need, I write in three different genres (YA, contemporary and sci-fi/fantasy). Which one I like the best depends on what mood I’m in. Right now, I’m on a contemporary kick. After that, who knows.

STRW:  . What draws you to those genres as opposed to contemporary fiction?

Sophie Bonaste:  I like creating worlds different from our own. When you write contemporary, you are bound by the rules of a reality that isn’t all that spectacular. But when you branch out and write fantasy and sci-fi, you can create a whole new set of rules to play around with.

STRW:  You originally wanted to be on stage and act. Now you write fiction. What similarities is there between acting in character and writing a character?

Sophie Bonaste:  There are actually a lot of similarities, because at the core of it you are telling a story. You have to create a world that is believable and real and characters that people care about. Writing is a little harder because you have to create everything in your readers’ heads, as opposed to showing it to them, which can be especially tricky in character development. But at the core of it, the two aren’t so dissimilar.

STRW:  Why Death as a main character? And love interest? What was your inspiration for that?

Sophie Bonaste:  I actually got the idea from work. My nickname at work is the Grim Reaper, despite the fact that I am one of the least terrifying people in the world. But it got me thinking: if I am the Grim Reaper, then why did Death have to be a scary being dressed in black? What if he was just a harmless, nerd with an annoying job like me? And if that was true than didn’t he deserve love like everyone else? The story just wrote itself from there.

STRW:   There are so many wonderful famous last words. What would yours be?

Sophie Bonaste: That’s a great question and one that I haven’t really thought of. I would like to think I would say something epic, but odds are it will be something standard like saying “Goodbye” and “I love you” to my family. But, hopefully, I have a lot of years to think of something epic.

STRW:   Whose arms would you love to die in?

Sophie Bonaste:  I don’t know. Hopefully, by the time, I die I will be married and we can die in each other’s arms. (Is it obvious I’m a romance writer?)

STRW:  What is next up for Sophie Bonaste?

Sophie Bonaste:  Well, at this point I have quite a few novels I am working on. Nothing is under contract yet, but I hope to have some news soon. Be sure to stay up to date with all of my works at http://sophiebonaste.blogspot.com

STRW:  Thanks, Sophie!  That was a wonderful interview.  Now let’s take a closer look at Death Gets a Boyfriend.

Death Gets a Boyfriend by Sophie Bonaste

Author Bio:

Sophie Bonaste is a novelist who never set out to be a novelist. As a child, she wanted to a Broadway actress and spent her childhood in numerous productions. But when adulthood set in and reality took over, Sophie chose to give up the theatre for a steady paycheck and instead turned to writing as a creative outlet. She stumbled into the M/M genre through fanfiction and never looked back. Sophie is quite happy with her change in artistic expression and doesn’t plan to stop writing for a long time.

A self-proclaimed nerd, Sophie is an avid fan of all things Star Wars and Harry Potter. (Sophie is a member of the Slytherin house, for those who were wondering.) Sophie also spends many hours watching and re-watching nerdy television shows. When she is not obsessing over the latest and greatest in nerdy entertainment, Sophie can be found screaming at her television during American football games. (Go Pack Go!) Sophie currently lives in Pennsylvania, about twenty minutes from her childhood town of The Middle of Nowhere.

 Death Gets a Boyfriend Excerpt:

I am Death.

Well, that’s one of my names anyway. I’m also known as the Grim Reaper, the Angel of Death, Azreal, and the list goes on. Some people have even called me Satan, but I would like to say right now, that’s a lie. I am not Satan. I know Satan. He’s not as bad of a guy as you would think. Sure he can get a little violent if you get out of hand, but as long as you stay on his good side, you’ll be fine.

And there I go getting off track again. You’ll have to forgive me. I’m not very good at staying focused. I guess that comes from the fact that I can jump around the world at an alarmingly fast rate. Thankfully that’s not very hard. Well, at least not for me. I guess, in the human population, that’s a skill many people want for some reason. I don’t know why, though, considering how scattered it makes your brain. It really does. That’s why I try to avoid using that skill. Causes headaches.

Anyway, this is a story about me. Don’t worry, though. It’s not too gruesome or anything like that. This is a story about how I fell in love. Yes, I know that’s kind of hard to believe. Death falling in love. Believe me, it shocked the hell out of me too. (No pun intended.) But it’s true. After thousands of years in existence, I finally found someone whom I wanted to spend my time with.

A MelanieM Review: Finally Home (The Traveler and the Tourist #2) by Zee Kensington

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Finally Home coverBangkok, Thailand. 2011.  Seasoned traveler and noted cuisine writer Christopher J. Springer meets/rescues Marco Mineo at the airport.  Marco is making his first trip away from home and chose Thailand as his destination only to be overwhelmed upon his arrival.  Meeting Chris changed his life as the culinary author takes Marco under his wing, showing him the true Thailand over the next 10 days.  But it was more than that.  During that time, Chris and Marco became lovers, another first for Marco, a closeted gay at home.   When the time came for Marco to return home and Chris to journey on to his next destination, neither was prepared for how much it hurt to part and how deeply they would miss each other later on.

Los Angeles, CA.  Once home, Marco finds himself sliding back into a life that’s no longer enough to satisfy him.  He’s unhappy about working for his uncle, he’s throughly back in the closet because of his fears, and he’s missing Chris more than he ever thought possible.  Then he gets a text from Chris who is coming to L.A. and everything seems possible and scary once more.

Chris has traveled the world, free to go where he wants and hook up whenever it was possible with no strings attached.  But something changed in Thailand when he met Marco.  Now in Mexico, Chris finds his thoughts consumed with the young man back in L.A.  When his publisher cancels the third leg of his assignment and offers him a replacement city in the U.S., Chris jumps at the chance to see Marco again and chooses L.A.  The Marco he finds is a deeply unhappy one.  Chris understands Marco’s fears and hopes to help him slowly out of the closet.  But a family crisis pulls Chris away and Marco is left to decide what and who is important in his life.  His fears that keep him in the closet or his love of Chris?

I was reading the anthology Two Tickets to Paradise when I came across my first Zee Kensington story, Krung Thep, City of Angels.  That story blew me away.   From the moment Marco steps off the plane onto the runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok and meets Chris Springer, the author pulls us deep into the Thai culture, from the street food vendors to the back alleys of this mesmerizing city.  Her descriptions of the food  made my mouth water and the vivid imagery of the sights and sounds of Bangkok had me itching to catch the next plane out for my own adventure.  And the relationship that sprang up between Marco and Chris in that short story?  Believable and sort of magical.  It was one of my favorite stories in that anthology for good reason.  So imagine my joy in finding Finally Home, the sequel to that amazing story.  My only trepidation?  Would it measure up to the original I remembered so well?

Well, yes and no.  And no, primarily for just one reason.  That only the prologue takes place in Bangkok.  Here the author brings those readers unfamiliar with Marco and Chris up to date on the circumstances of their first meeting and the beginning of their relationship.  Readers, its not nearly enough.  Run, don’t walk and grab up that story.  It’s a must read.  But the prologue does a good job in bringing some of that initial magic home here.  Than this story really gets started in Los Angelos, Marco’s home.  Again, Zee Kensington applies her wonderful skills in bringing places and people to life.  For Marco comes (and lives) with his very close knit Italian family where the very idea of personal space is lost.  His mother is constantly fixing her son up on blind dates with women Marco has no intention of ever seeing again.  For reasons that will be revealed in the story, Marco has a very good reason for remaining in the closet at home. And his love for his family, which telegraphs beautifully in scene after scene , makes his fear realistic and at times overwhelming.  Helping Marco stay closeted is his uncertainty about his relationship with Chris.  He has so little experience that he’s afraid to ask Chris where they stand.  And again we get that too.

Kensington has chosen to make Chris nine years older than Marco.  It works as Chris has been traveling for years.  But while Chris is a seasoned world traveler, he is almost on the same level as Marco when it comes to commitment and relationships.  He too has had problems with his family over his homosexuality so Chris understands Marco’s fears of abandonment.  That’s a nice touch.  I thought the dynamics between Chris and Marco worked because Chris isn’t trying to push Marco further than he can accept, knowing it must be Marco’s decision.  There is also a nice playoff  between their ages, backgrounds, and yes, experience.  It works on all levels.

What did I miss?  The cultural and sensual experience that was Thailand.  Zee Kensington relayed that so well that I felt I was there.  The author’s stay there conveyed a vividness to the scenes and an immediacy to all Marco and Chris’s travels  that I remember today.  In its place are the street vendors of the less visited side of Los Angeles, the truck vendors and the East L.A. food scene.  It’s good but no replacement for the culinary banquet that was the first story.

What will the readers find frustrating?  The realistic give and take, the misunderstandings and the shaky course of  Chris and Marco’s relationship.  It’s a path strewn with obstacles, many of their own making and you will find yourself wanting to give each a shake or two.  But that’s because you have become so involved in their future together and  deeply connected to these characters along the way.  I so hope that this is not the end for Chris and Marco.  There are other places and culinary adventures awaiting them.  I wanted to see them together through Mexico and Kenya.  Perhaps later, one can always hope.  In the meantime, I will reread Krung Thep again and enjoy my taste of Bangkok and the beginnings of Chris and Marco’s journey to HEA.

I highly recommend Krung Thep, Finally Home and Zee Kensington to all lovers of food, travel, and hot men in love.  I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next.

Cover art:  Paul Richmond.  While I liked elements of this cover, the model for Chris is just too young.  That throws it off for me completely.
