A MelanieM Review: The Nesting Habits of Strange Birds by Charley Descoteaux:

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

All he ever wanted was to be a normal guy….

Cover The Nesting Habits of Strange BirdsPhil Brask’s life has been one of abandonment and abuse. Jerry Callahan found and rescued Phil after an attack.  Jerry offered Phil a job, and a home as well as a becoming a mentor to the younger man.  Now Phil lives in Jerry’s basement.  He spends his days in solitude, converting legal documents into electronic format. When Phil is not working, then he lives behind the lens of his camera, photographing nature, including the nesting habits of migratory birds. His only friend and outside contact continues to be Jerry, the father figure and mentor, who understands Phil and his issues.

When the pipe feeding the water heater bursts, Phil’s life undergoes a dramatic change. Plumber Lee Redding arrives to fix the pipe and water damage done to the basement where Phil lives and works. The two men establish a shaky and instantaneous attraction.  And before Phil is even aware, he is drawn away from the narrow focus of his computer and camera lens. Lee gives Phil hope for a life past the walls that Phil has built around himself.  Lee’s arrival  expands Phil’s universe as he meets Lee’s family and band. But there’s a reason Phil retreated behind those walls, why he panics at a simple touch.

Lee’s life is full, if not exactly what he had wanted. He works  with his uncle and helps out on his mother’s farm. He  playis bass in a horrible metal band, and hooking up when he pleases—but he’s always suspected something was missing. When he meets Phil with the icy-blue eyes, he knows exactly what that something is. Phil isn’t like other guys, but neither is Lee beneath his carefree exterior. Lee has his own demons to fight.  Between the two of them, maybe they can help each other past their issues and histories into a future both have always dreamed of.

From the wonderfully quixotic title to the intriguing blurb, this was a book that drew me in with just one glance.  It is also the first book by Charlie Descoteaux that I have read but it certainly won’t be the last.   The Nesting Habits of  Strange Birds is a wondrous journey into the complex minds and lives of two wounded men and their families.  From the surface, each group seems so dissimilar.  But upon closer inspection, each young man carries the scars of their past, if not upon their bodies, then upon their inner selves. And each man’s family (in Phil’s case, it is Jerry) is as different and supportive as each one of the them needs them to be.  The family dynamics and individual give and take found in this story were among the highlights of this amazing novel.

In particular, I loved Lee’s family. It consists of Lee’s mother Tina who runs a holistic farm, his sister Becca who I just adored, and his Uncle Lenny who will grow on you by the end of the story.  Phil’s adopted family can be found in Jerry Callahan, whose past makes him ideal to act as a mentor and father figure to Phil. Every character here is a believable human being, consisting of layer after layer of values, beliefs and faults.  There are so many surprises and delights to be found amongst this group, none of which I am willing to spoil for the reader.  The joy is in the nature of these individuals and the matter of fact manner in which Charley Descoteaux slowly reveals the family dynamics and close relationships found between them all.

Descoteaux’s descriptions are vivid and gripping in their naturalness and authenticity.  The author’s imagery pulls you into the scenes and keeps you involved and part of whatever situation is unfolding at the time.  It doesn’t matter whether it is the Great Blue Herons interacting with their young that Phil is photographing and Lee is observing for the first time or Phil’s introduction to Lee’s band and ear numbing music.  It’s carries an emotional wallop while continuing to be totally absorbing.

Is this story for everyone?  Well, it depends if you are looking for a story that is strictly romance or one where the romance is just another lovely thread in the narrative. If romance is your goal, then perhaps The Nesting Habits of Strange Birds isn’t the story for you.  This story certainly has its dark moments as it should given each man’s background and emotional status.  And the narrative slows down to deal with issues raised during the course of the story line.  There are no “instant cures” for the ailments and issues carried deep inside Phil and Lee.  Instead it documents how these two can learn to adapt, changing enough to allow their lives to expand to include love for each other and their families.  That they achieve it is remarkable and heartwarming.

I absolutely recommend The Nesting Habits of Strange Birds by Charlie Descoteaux.  It’s a slow, thoughtful read with complex characters who find themselves trying to deal with life and sometimes difficult situations.  Its full of love, family, and the strength and courage needed to live a life beyond the barriers we erect to protect ourselves, even if it means that sometimes we get hurt in the process.   Pick it up and decide for yourself.

Cover art by DWS Photography.  I wish there was more to this cover than just two models.  It just doesn’t speak to the story within.

A MelanieM Review: Infected: The Lost Weekend (Infected #7.5) by Andrea Speed

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Infected-the Lost Weekend coverAn Infected Short Story

Roan is hired by Scott to look for a hockey player friend of his. After a long night of celebratory drinking, Scott can’t quite remember what happened to his friend, and he isn’t answering his cell. Roan discovers Scott’s friend was much more troubled than he ever realized, and that some mysteries should remain unsolved.

Scott, one of Roan’s professional hockey player friends, is missing his teammate after a drunken night on the town.  When the friend doesn’t show up for practice, a search is launched with Roan doing the investigating.  What follows is a revelation into a player they thought they knew but turns out  no one had any idea of what was bubbling under the surface.

Andrea Speed takes our favorite Infected characters off on a weekend investigation for one of Roan’s friends.  It’s not a complicated case and it is solved almost as quickly as it begins but what matters here is the characters, their relationships and the journey the investigation takes them all on.

Infected: The Lost Weekend by Andrea Speed is a short side story to a long, densely layered, and evolving series.  There is really no way to impart the pertinent series details in such a short story and Speed doesn’t try as it would not begin to do justice to this astonishing character and series.  You must approach this story with the full knowledge of the ongoing plot and relationships.  If you lack that background, this probably won’t make as much a impact on the reader.  But a side story takes it for granted that you realize that the backstory will be missing and goes on from that standpoint.  And from that point of view, Infected: The Lost Weekend delivers the sort of character interaction and dialog the readers have come to expect from this author and series.

I am a huge fan of Andrea Speed and Infected.  I enjoy her stories as much for the peculiar and obscure cultural references as I do Infected’s evolving plot and characters.  Here I get both.  Involved in this storyline are Scott, a bisexual professional hockey player and friend of Roan’s.  Holden Fox,  ex high priced prostitute, Scott’s lover who plays an increasing part of Roan’s operations as a part-time investigator.  Really, I just love Holden.  His is a voice almost as strong as Roan’s and that’s a remarkable achievement.  For Roan is one of the strangest, strongest, and angst driven characters I have had the pleasure of meeting in the pages of a novel.  The Lost Weekend combines the three of them on a short journey of discovery.

The investigation into the events of a drunken weekend and a missing hockey player are given a fairly realistic treatment.  It is a short examination of a person’s ability to hide their true personality and issues behind a facade and the ease with which others assume that who they see is the real persona.  It makes you think about how many assumptions you might make in a day about people you think you know but really don’t know anything about.  Scott knows just enough about the missing player to know that he’s in trouble but nothing more.  It’s up to Roan to solve the puzzle to the man’s personality and find the solution to the case.

The resolution  won’t surprise anyone but again its the journey here not the end of the trail that matters.  Did I wish for more?  Certainly, but I always feel like that when it comes to Roan and his group of highly individual and quirky friends.  For those of us who crave a new Roan story, this provides temporary relief until the next installment appears.  Or perhaps you can head over to Andrea Speed’s website for a new free “online only “story as well.   Devil’s Night, part one is up now and if you are like me, you can never have enough Roan or the Infected universe.

If you are an Infected fan (and doesn’t that sound wrong) and a lover of all things Roan, then pick up Infected: The Lost Weekend and get your Roan fix in while we are waiting for the next story to drop.  If you are new to this character and series, start at the beginning of Roan’s tale and work your way forward.  It’s really the only way to see the character development, understand all the relationships that emerge and marvel at a story line that gets more convoluted with each new installment.  Love the series, love, love the characters.  Infected is one of Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words must reads of any year.

Cover art by Paul Richmond.  The Infected covers are dramatic, and darkly beautiful.  They also do a terrific job of branding this series.  I can spot an Infected novel just by looking at the cover instead of title and author.  Great job.

A MelanieM Review: The Last Thing He Needs by J.H. Knight

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

The Last Thing He Needs CoverTommy O’Shea is raising his seven younger brothers and sisters the best he can under the worst of circumstances. With an alcoholic, drug addicted father and stepmother to contend with, only the fact that the house they live in was their grandmother’s keeps a roof over their heads.  The money needed for food and other living expenses is cobbled together by a collection of part time jobs, petty thefts and other desperate measures.  This includes selling sexual favors in alleys to get by.  And it’s been that way since Tommy was 15. Here living on the edge is razor sharp, pain is common place and despairs its companion. Between trying to make sure his brothers and sisters are fed, attend school, and stay out of the foster care system, Tommy has room for little else in his life, including a relationship.

Police officer Bobby McAlister has known Tommy and his family since they were kids. Unbeknownst to Tommy he has been trying to keep an eye out for their safety.  A chance meeting with Tommy gives Bobby a chance to help out while trying to strike up a friendship once more.  But Tommy has erected a wall of anger, diffidence and shame to keep others away and he tries to do the same with Bobby. Bobby sees how desperate the situation has become and refuses to be pushed away and a tentative friendship and relationship is formed.

A shattering event tests the fragile bonds that has formed between Tommy, Bobby and Tommy’s family.  Will they be strong enough to withstand the tragedy that befalls the O’Shea family, or will all be lost forever under the aftermath?

The Last Thing He Needs by J. H. Knight is that story that slips along the edges of what could have been a Lifetime movie yet surmounts that overwrought template to become a deeply moving and emotionally wrenching story of family and love.  J. H. Knight is another new author and a terrific one if this story is any indication.  I have to admit I approached this story from two very different viewpoints.  One, the side of me that’s addicted to those Christmas Hallmark movies, and the other side?  That’s the one that looks at life through George Carlin glasses.  The blurb hooked me in while my suspicious nature said to beware the maudlin elements that could have made this a manipulative sob fest.

I shouldn’t have worried.  Knight took all the suspect elements, the impoverished family, the kids in danger, the drug addled parents…all of it and made it believable and heartrending. It all starts with Tommy O’Shea for he is the anchor of his family and for this story.  If Tommy had not come across as real as he does, this would be a very different novel.  But Knight makes us believe in Tommy.  In his anger, and pain, and desperation.  The descriptions of the O’Shea family’s living conditions ring in as authentic and gritty.  The condition of the house, exterior and interior rooms, reads as desperation, especially the bedroom crammed with bodies. The teenagers shouldering burdens they were never meant to cope with, young kids on the edge of delinquency but for reasons that make your heart break, and the toddlers unaware of how shaky is the foundation their family rests on.  Knight has a clear enough idea of the reality of poor families these days to make the O’Shea family existence spare, gritty and desperate without coating it in dramatic prose and imagery.  It’s a grim life and Knight depicts it as such.

Bobby McAlister comes from a very different background.  The only son of two loving parents, the loss of his father has left Bobby and his mother trying to cope with the hole in their lives and a future without the man they both loved deeply.  His life and upbringing could not be any more different and the manner in which Tommy and the kids are living is almost too much for Bobby to comprehend, even as a police officer.  His emotional and familial solidity is the bulwark Tommy needs for himself and for his brothers and sisters against the reality their lives have become.  Bobby isn’t perfect and that just pulls us into his personality even further.  Then add to that his grieving mother, Judy, and our love for the McAlister family just grows and grows.

All the characters here managed to be fleshed out to a level that enables the reader to believe in them too.  Tommy’s father and step mother are characters whose addictions and behaviors are heinous yet Knight is careful to show that Cal and step mother Cheryl were once so very different from the people they are now after years of substance abuse, bad decisions, and parental neglect has made them.  Life is choices and sometimes it only takes a slip or a push for you to go one way or the way.  Or in Tommy’s case, realize that to ask and accept help when you need it does not have to be dangerous or belittling.

Knight is quick not to deliver any easy answers for a desperate and painful situation.  Tommy’s life and that of his siblings remain precarious for most of the story.  But the resolution, while slow to arrive, is ultimately satisfying and emotionally heartwarming.  This story and its characters earns its ending.  It’s wonderful and realistic.  And it puts J.H. Knight squarely on my must read list.  I think after reading this story you will find yourself doing the same.  Consider this highly recommended by Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.

Twelve-year-old Autumn’s world is shattered when her beloved Great-Pop, Tommy Johnson, suffers a stroke that leaves him comatose. With everyone around her resigning themselves to the inevitable, Autumn is the only one not willing to give up. She and Great-Pop have more secret stories to share with each other, after all. More stories about Roy McMillan—the great love of Tommy’s life whom he lost fifty years ago.
Autumn struggles to keep Great-Pop on this side of death’s door. But how can she compete with the beautiful and mysterious Valley—a place of surreal magic where the sun never fully sets? Especially when there’s someone familiar in the Valley who will do everything he can to keep Great-Pop from returning to her.

Excerpt:

“So what’s my prize?”

“I’m gonna let you kiss me,” Roy said with a big, devious smile.

“Yeah?” Tommy asked, thinking he was being put on. “All right, I guess I’ll take the consolation prize then.”

“That leaves me with the grand prize by default.”

And he leaned in, and as sweet as anything Tommy had experienced in his whole life, Roy kissed his slightly parted lips. Even when Tommy stiffened, Roy did not pull back. Instead, slowly and deliberately, he gathered Tommy to him with a hold that was loose enough for him to escape from, but tight enough to be a real, romantic embrace. He kissed Tommy until he had to draw breath, and even then he did not let him go all the way.

“You… really wanted to?” Tommy asked, his head spinning. In that moment he had a single, solitary regret. It wasn’t coming out here to shoot arrows, and it wasn’t that he hadn’t pulled out of Roy’s embrace or even that he’d been kissed. It was that he hadn’t kissed Roy first. Because Tommy liked the kissing. A lot. And he wanted to do it more.

“Much as I love the opportunity, I don’t want to waste time driving.” He cocked a grin at Lindsey in the dark car.

“Don’t worry. You won’t. Drive.”

“Okay.” He hit the accelerator. Holy shit. Instant speed. No rumble, no roar, no lag or leaping ahead. Just zero to infinity with a touch. “Wow. This is freaky!”

“Fun, isn’t it?”

“Give me directions.”

“Okay. Pull down your fly.

“What?” He glanced over, but Lindsey’s face was not smiling—intense, actually.

EGGPLANTS, EGGPLANTS, AND MORE EGGPLANTS

By Deanna Wadsworth

Thank you for hosting me for the GRL blog tour! September is a busy, busy time for me. Not only are the hubby and me trying to squeeze in a few more boat trips to the sandbar before the weather turns, but I am also getting all my goodies ready for GRL.
Most of all, I am busy harvesting and preserving all of the yummies from my huge garden! If you are a fellow pinner, you can check out my “Canning and Preserving” board on Pinterest.

Today, I am currently knee deep in edits for my latest book EVERYBODY HATES FRUITCAKE from THE NAUGHTY NORTH POLE series from Decadent Publishing. I am also surrounded by jalapenos, tomatoes and eggplants.
Oooh, the eggplants.

I have so many eggplants that I really have no idea what to do with them. Yes, I did the eggplant parmesan thing, and even made ratatouille—it’s more than just a Disney movie folks! Now, I am going to can more ratatouille this weekend, and even roast some eggplant then freeze it with lemon for baba ganoush this winter.

But I still have eggplants!!! About eleven more on the vines to be precise.

That is A LOT of eggplant.

You may be wondering what eggplants have to do with writing books. Nothing, really. LOL, other than the story ideas in my mind are kinda like the eggplants in my garden this year. They just keep coming and I don’t have the time to get to all of them. I worry that if I don’t write them some of them may rot and I will lose them. Seriously, I don’t understand writer’s block because I could map out what books I want to finish/write for the next several years, but be interrupted by a hundred more ideas along the way.

So which one do I write? Which eggplant do I cook next?

CupidsWager[A]LGWell, my current WIP is the third and final book in my soon-to-be titled Naughty Cupid Trilogy. A CUPID’S WAGER came out from Dreamspinner Press last February. I always saw it as a longer story, broken up into three fun reads. Believe me, Lio has plenty more to say and he’s not done with that pierced dock of Ethan’s either, LOL. The sequel and conclusion should be out sometime next summer. Fingers crossed!

I’ll also be working on lots of edits for my Christmas story EVERYBODY HATES FRUITCAKE (coming Black Friday) from Decadent Publishing. Then there is also by next BIG book, an epic historical novel entitled WRECKED which will be available from Dreamspinner Press early this spring.

In the meantime, what am I gonna do with all these eggplants? Any suggestions? Please feel free to share a fave recipe here or send me a few pins on Pinterest.

In the spirit of food, I brought along an excerpt of EVERYBODY HATES FRUITCAKE, Book Five in THE NAUGHTY NORTH POLE series. It is currently in edits, but this excerpt shares the general feel of the story, and please ignore any typos! LOL If you are new to the series, might I suggest picking up A GIFT FOR SANTA, which is currently only .99 on Amazon. There you will learn that Santa runs a different kinda North Pole and his elves are more than just toymakers…and they all have candy-flavored cum!!!

One commenter will win one of the previous four Naughty North Pole books of their choice! Hopefully, they leave a good eggplant recipe in the comment section along with their email!

Everyone Hates Fruitcake Blurb:DW_A gift for Santa_SM

Ivan is a new reindeer handler at the North Pole with the unfortunate luck to have fruitcake flavored cum. When fellow elf Jimmy hits on him, Ivan fears revealing his secret and losing a chance to have a real relationship with Jimmy.
After all, everybody hates fruitcake!
Danni’s wife Sheila is the Head Chef at the North Pole. Sheila has been on the hunt for the perfect recipe for fruitcake and neglecting her wifely duties. So when Ivan tells Danni about his dilemma, she devises a plan to solve both of their problems.
Can these two girls help Ivan realize he is perfect just the way he is? Will Danni’s wife perfect her fruitcake recipe with Ivan’s special ingredient? And more importantly, will Ivan have the courage to take Jimmy up on his offer?

Everyone Hates Fruitcake Excerpt:

As I watched Jimmy walk away I felt a pang in my guts, paired with a powerful sense of loss and longing. Part of me wanted to run after him, but the other part of me knew that the letdown would be too much to handle.

“You’ll have to see?”

I jumped, startled as a Dökkálfar girl plopped down beside me. Danni was tan and gorgeous, with long black hair and tits as big as her heart. As one of my best friends, she worked as a dispatcher in the stable office. When I’d arrived here, she’d sort of taken me under her wing until she knew I could handle all of the rough and tumble elves working in the barns. We wrangled the reindeer and Danni wrangled us.

“What?” I asked her.

She waved at Jimmy’s retreating form, her beautiful face pursed in irritation. “You’ll have to see?” she repeated, punching my arm. “You’re a bone head.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I rubbed my arm, refusing to admit anything. “And that hurt.”

“Don’t give me that pile of Yeti crap,” she said dismissively. “Jimmy has been hitting on you for weeks, but you never take the bait. I think you must be the first celibate elf in history.”

I swallowed down the last of my cocoa, not meeting her eye. “I am certainly not celibate.”

She arched her perfectly penciled brows at me. “Well, if you don’t stop being stupid you’re going to be.”

I frowned, disliking how close she came to hitting the nail on the head of my very real fears. “Do you have something else to say, or did you just come over here to abuse me then butt into my love live?”

“No, that was just a side bar. I was actually looking for you because Sheila is driving me crazy.”

Sheila was Danni’s wife. They’d had a little ceremony a few months ago before the busy season made time off at the Workshops nigh impossible. Santa had officiated and I got to drive the sleigh, which took them off into the sunset. The two girls had shamelessly made out as the Northern Lights danced above, completely oblivious of their driver more than enjoying the show.

“Trouble in paradise all ready?” I teased. “Why should I be taking relationship advice from you then?” I nudged her playfully at the same time she faced me so I ended up jabbing her in the boob.

She raised her brows, and didn’t seem too bothered. Danni was as curvy and buxom as I was tall and hairy. The memory of those two girls hot and heavy in the sleigh on the heels of Jimmy and that damn cookie made my blood warm just a bit.

“No,” she told me. “Not trouble. Sheila is just obsessing over some lost recipe and it’s driving me nuts. You know how she gets. Like a dog with a bone.”

I chuckled, grateful to have the conversation off me. Sheila was one focused woman, to the point of obsessive compulsive actually, but I liked her.

I took a heaping bite of the pie Jimmy had given me. It was delicious.

Not half as delicious as he probably tastes.

A soft hand caressed mine. “Seriously, why don’t you like Jimmy?”

Naturally, Danni wouldn’t let it drop. “It’s not that,” I answered honestly. “I like him a lot actually. That’s the problem.”

She shook her head, her long black ponytail swaying. “That makes absolutely no sense.”

“Of course you don’t get it,” I said, brushing a lock of silky black hair out of her eyes. She didn’t flinch from my familiarity. “You’re perfect.”

Grinning, she said, “Well, that’s obvious. But it still doesn’t explain why you say you like Jimmy, yet you ignore all this advances.”

“Because I don’t know if I should do anything about it. He’ll just end up being disappointed.”

“I’m still going to go with, that makes absolutely no sense.” She gave me a head to toe onceover. I managed a smile when she tipped back to take in my ass and give me a whistle—she was such a flirt. “You’re gorgeous, Ivan. And you’re funny. You forget that I’ve seen you take care of those pathetic earthbound reindeer.”

“They’re not pathetic.”

“See what I mean? All the other Dökkálfar in the stables prefer to work with the flyers. But not you. You’re kind and patient. A real caregiver. So I ask you, what would Jimmy have to be disappointed about?”

I squirmed in my seat unsure if I should tell her, but desperately wanting to. I had not breathed a word of it since I’d arrived, preferring to have my choice of lovers, rather than be laughed at like I had been in my hometown. But something about the sincerity, the kindness in Danni’s brown eyes made me feel like I should trust her. Like it was finally time to tell someone the truth.

“Because I taste like fruitcake,” I whispered.

Deanna Wadsworth might be a bestselling erotica author, but she leads a pretty vanilla life in Ohio with her wonderful husband and a couple adorable cocker spaniels. She has been spinning tales and penning stories since childhood, and her first erotic novella was published in 2010. When she isn’t writing books or brainstorming with friends, you can find her making people gorgeous in a beauty salon. She loves music and dancing, and can often be seen hanging out on the sandbar in the muddy Maumee River or chilling with her hubby and a cocktail in their basement bar. In between all that fun, Deanna cherishes the quiet times when she can let her wildly active imagination have the full run of her mind. Her fascination with people and the interworkings of their relationships have always inspired her to write romance with spice and love without boundaries.

A MelanieM Review: A Tooth for a Fang by Liv Olteano

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

A Tooth for a FangOn a vacation for the first time in ages, Rick Barton is reflecting over his past and wondering what to do next with his life.  Rick is just gotten out of a long abusive relationship with a man who was not only his lover but boss and owner of the house they lived in.  With one punch (long over due) all that was gone, and although Rick is glad, he’s shaky about his future.

Then a gorgeous man approaches him on the beach, A flirtation leads to a romantic encounter in the water which leads to….a bite?  Late Rick wakes up in the hospital to find the same man who bit him sitting in the room next to his bed.  The man?  Not a man, a lycan with a proposal he wants Rick to accept.  Become a lycan like him and join the Paranormal Bureau of Investigation.  All it will take is another bite.  Or stay the way he is and suffer the consequences.  Not much of a deal, then again Rick doesn’t have much of a life and he accepts the bite and the job.  Then it turns out the lycan who bit him is also his boss and partner.  Has Rick exchanged one controlling lover for another?

Lycan Detective Travis Chandler is looking for that one person who could be his mate as well as investigative partner.  One look at Rick Barton on the beach, and Travis knew that Rick was the perfect person for all the jobs he has in mind.  But Travis didn’t count on Rick’s pain filled background or the growing number of bodies that he and Rick are called ti investigate even before Rick’s training is over.

Someone is killing the leaders of the paranormal world.  It will take everything Travis and Rick have to track down the killer or killers, stop them from murdering more beings, and bring them all to justice, paranormal style.  All while adjusting to each other, and for Rick, learning exactly what it means to be a lycan.  There’s no time for romance, is love in the air?  And can Rick sniff it out in time?

A new shifter novel and new author?  Heck yeah!  And A Tooth for a Fang appears to the the first in a new series called Leader Murders from Liv Olteano.  At first I approached this story with a bit of trepidation, even with the shifter element.  Rick Barton has been in a long term abusive relationship.  His lover controlled him in almost every way becoming his lover, his boss, and yes, landlord.  Then he is supposed to be forced by a lycan into a similarly controlling relationship? Hmmm, not sure how that was going to play out.  But Liv Olteano takes those assumptions or perhaps expectations and delivers  something entirely different.

I loved Olteano’s paranormal world that exists alongside ours.  It’s ruled by The Council, whose Special Work Forces, like the Paranormal Bureau of Investigation insures the security of their society, investigates all wrong doings, and acts as law enforcement for all beings of which lycans are just the start.  Lycans and werewolves (not the same here), vampires, trolls, and much, much more comprise this society, each with its own set of governing rules to follow as well.  Get get a taste of vampire, werewolf, and lycan group structures as well as an overall feel to how the paranormal society is run as a whole.  Turns out its pretty autocratic which goes along with how Rick is recruited to begin with.

I love the sequnce of bites that establishes a lycan and its relationship to others, including the one who bit it.  First bite?  Makes a recruit with options. Second bite?  Makes a lycan.  Third bite?  Well, that’s one you will have to find out yourself.  I love that Liv Olteano doesn’t exactly follow common lore here but adds her own twists to make it  distinctive and inventive.

There are ghastly murders to investigate and here the sense of smell becomes both an ultimate investigative tool and powerful component to this story.  Aromas of all sorts come into play here from the delightful to the nauseating and Olteano’s descriptives almost enable us to smell them all.  The reveal of the culprit might not surprise you but the motive will.  Loved that too.

The heart of this story is the evolving relationship between Rick and Travis.  It’s sweeter than expected yet still  contains enough sarcasm and snark to give it some bite.  And best of all, no instant love to be found here.  Instant lust?  Assuredly.  A slow growing friendship and trust?  That comes along too.  But it has to be earned, especially when you have someone as emotionally wounded as Rick is.  That aspect of their relationship and this story  really pulled me in and kept me involved.

I absolutely recommend this story.  What a great universe Liv Olteano has built and what fascinating characters she has created that inhabit it.  There’s a troll who is also the Morgue Examiner, and a werewolf nurse caught in mid-shift.  They are all as delightful and intriguing as the main characters we get involved in.   Olteano’s writing is smotth, the plot well conceived and the romance?  Wonderful.  This book exceeded all my expectations and then some.  I can’t wait for more.

Blurb:

Upon taking the throne as High Lord of Katraman and Liege of Scura, Lornyc Reagalos’s focus on rebuilding one city and reassuring another leaves little time for his husband, Methian. Added to that, he must contend with is the unexpected revelation that his grandfather, Romanus, set up his own religion and named an enigmatic figure called The One as its deity. Through some twisted interpretation of the signs left by Romanus, the Cerulean Cult comes to believe Lornyc is their god and invites him to sanctify the Cult as part of its five-hundred-year anniversary. During the Sanctification Ceremony, the Cult’s holy relic, an orb given to it by Romanus, is split, releasing an entity that tears a hole in the dimensions. The species that guards the dimensions, the Valen, force Lornyc to fix the breach, or they will have him extinguished.

 Idolatry Special Excerpt

Methian had complained when Lornyc rolled out of bed, but he’d learned years ago how to wiggle out of Methian’s grasp and dodge his wayward hands. They still had a few hours before dinner and more than enough issues piling up in his office.

What Lornyc didn’t expect to find on his desk was a pair of black leather boots. He stopped in midstride, still holding the door handle as the chair swung around. The chair’s occupant’s long copper hair fell loosely over her shoulders, and she smiled coldly as Lornyc slammed shut the door.

“So you’re back,” said Lornyc sourly.

He hadn’t factored in the prospect of Diam’s return so soon into the mess he was already trying to deal with.

“I told you I would be.”

“Back for babysitting duties?”

“Your words, Lornyc, not mine.” Diam clasped her hands together and rested them on her midriff. “Are you saying you need babysitting?”

“What do you want, Diam? I’ve more than enough things to keep me occupied without your interference. You would think that a race of superior beings would have better things to do than watch over me.”

“We all have our jobs to do. And my current one is to be your guardian and keep you out of trouble.” She stood “I’m going to be here a lot, so I’d get used to the idea if I was you.”

“And what makes you think I’m going to put up with you?” sneered Lornyc.

“Who says you have a choice? You might think your powers are something special. But I could crush you in a heartbeat.”

“Then why don’t you?” Lornyc stepped toward her, standing only inches away. He was tired and angry, the last few weeks had been nothing but relentless, and he’d had enough of the constant demands placed upon him. “Last time we met, you told me you were my guardian, but are you really here to protect others from me? Perhaps you should just remove me now and you’d be able to do something more worthwhile with your time.”

She laughed and patted Lornyc on the shoulder and the force of it almost sent Lornyc flying. He staggered backward but managed to remain on his feet.

“I like you, Lornyc. You’ve got balls.”

A MelanieM Review: Yakuza Courage (The Way of the Yakuza #2) by H.J. Brues

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Yakuza CourageEx-Navy SEAL Brendan O’Farrihy’s life was never the same after his SEAL team deployed to Afghanistan on a near suicidal covert mission. It ended disastrously, killing two of his team members and shattering the lives of the remaining SEALS. Now Brendan works for a Washington lawyer and boyfriend, helping his clients by conducting investigations and acting as security.  Then Brendan is sent to Honolulu on a new job for their client, Senator Harris.  It seems that the Senator’s youngest son has gotten involved with the Yakuza and brought them back with him from Japan where he had been kidnapped.  The Senator’s son, Kenneth Harris,  is living and working at Honolulu dojo , a suspected front for a yakuza syndicate.  Brendon’s job is to investigate and extract the son as necessary. The first step in Brendan’s investigation? Enroll in a kendo class being given at the dojo in question to get close to his subject and observe the situation.

Kendo instructor, the cocky, short-fused, gorgeous Kinosuke Yonekawa has arrived in Honolulu along with his former yakuza underboss Shigure Matsunaga, other ex yakuza members and of course, Ken Harris, Matsunaga’s gajin lover who is helping to see them established in the US. Kinosuke feels cutoff from all he knew, especially his place in Japanese and Yakuza society. American culture and customs confuse him and he feels adrift from the very people who make up his family. Then a new student arrives in class. Freckled, outgoing, handsome and yet respectful. The feelings he engenders in Kinosuke just add to his jumbled state of mind.

As Brendan becomes more involved with Kinosuke, the less sure he is that the Senator has been telling him the truth. The Yakuza are protectiave of Ken and seem to have left their criminal connections behind them in Japan. So what exactly is going on?  When Ken disappears from the dojo, Brendan must decide whether to stick to his original plan or reveal his investigation to Kinosuke and the others in order to help them find Ken and bring him home.  But will Kinosuke ever forgive him?  And will it all be in time to rescue Ken from a danger closer than Brendan had imagined.

Yakuza Courage, the second story in H.J. Brues’ The Way of the Yakuza series, represents yet another new series and author for me.  Her special combination of suspense, romance and all the elements that a variety of cultures bring really made this story (and series) a real highlight for me.  I am working backwards here so I was missing the first installment, Yakuza Pride, where Ken Harris and Shigure Matsunaga met in Japan and the kidnapping that occurred there.  However, I didn’t feel as though that lack of a complete backstory was necessary in order to get connected to the men, the romances and histories central to the plot here.

Words that come to mind when trying to describe the characters, and plot?  Densely packed, beautifully constructed, and always complex.  That applies to everything here.  The characters are especially marvelous.  On one side you have Brendan O’Farrihy and the remaining members of his SEAL family, a damaged, closeknit, and over the top competent group of warriors devastated by a mission gone wrong.  And soon to be reunited in Hawaii.  On the other side?  A closeknit group of Japanese warriors…a segment of the criminal gang that is Yakuza.  They too have been separated, not from each other, but from their material and emotional foundation in the Yakuza organization in Japan.  Two teams or families adrift by circumstances and one man who will bring them all together.  What a great plot!  And to make them all feel alive H. J. Brues steeps her story and characters deep in the culture of Hawaii.  Here  it is the white people or haole who are outsiders.  Not so those of multiracial backgrounds found throughout the Hawaiian Islands, where it can take a true polyglot to understand the mixture of dialects, colloquialisms, pidgin mashups of  English, Japanese, Samoan, and much, much more that has become the language of the people there.

I loved the manner in which Brues folded her knowledge of the various cultures (of Japan, Yakuza, Hawaii, and SEAL) together in such a way that they remain distinct yet commonplace elements of the people and story lines.  Her characters speak the language of their home and cultures and it feels as natural as breathing.  Along the way other details and facets are thrown in, such as the clothing worn by kendo masters and the slippers and furnishings found there. Want to know more about what it is like to don (and take off) the hakama pants worn by Kendo Masters and students? Then read the scene that highlights the difficulty and time it took Brendan and Kinosuke to remove their hakama pants while half crazed with lust.  It comes across as both authentic, and funny.   Dialects swing back and forth from Japanese to colloquial Hawaii then to standard SEAL  speak and English and then around again.   A tremendous merry-go-round of  vivid imagery, local flavor, and layering that can make your head swim if other cultures and languages are not your thing.  For me it felt as if each new page brought another present to unwrap.

There is a tremendous amount of information here and plot complications to  include so at times the reading can slow down, the narrative sluggish under the weight of all those great elements and tactical maneuverings.  Then its starts to pick up as the other SEAL team members arrive and the rush is on to accomplish several missions, save Ken, and complete a HEA for all.  That race towards the resolution is really gripping, the author’s sentences creating a picture of tension, danger, and imminent discovery.  So  many great action sequences coming together for a jam packed explosive finale.

I loved this story so much that I went back and grabbed up  the first in the series, Yakuza Pride.  But that is a review for a later time.  But if you haven’t read that story, don’t worry you can start here as I did.  From that glorious cover to the equally stunning story inside, this is one of ScatteredThoughtsandRogueWords Best of 2014 and highly recommended reads!

Cover artist Reese Dante’s cover is lush, beautifully rendered and spot on for this story.
