A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Set Ablaze by K.C. Burn and Darcy Stark (narrator)

Rating 3 stars out of 5

This is one of those reviews I hate to do because I liked the story but hated the narration and that dropped my rating. Darcy Stark just does not have the voice(s) to do this story. That’s my personal opinion, of course, but his narration ruined my enjoyment. To be honest, by midpoint, I borrowed the book through the kindle lending feature so I could finish the story by reading it.

Firefighter Hayden Hurst isn’t in the closet, but he’s not one to remind his homophobic friends that their slurs are hurtful. That may be fine for him, but when his friend Miguel’s brother, Jez Bouchet, needs a temporary roommate, Hayden finds out what it is to be out and proud. The young, flamboyant dancer is deeply offended by some of the comments made by Hayden’s friends and vows to leave as soon as he can.

But of course, before that happens, the two act on their attraction for one another and Jez never leaves. In the meantime, his former boyfriend has continued his stalking behavior all the way from New York to LA. A pro hockey player, he’s managed to get himself traded to a West Coast team so he’ll be able to harass Jez nearer to home.

The mess eventually blows up. The guys and Jez’s little pug puppy, Fang, end up together and they all live happily ever after. Not without angst and drama and some hot sex scenes, though.

I’m going to give the author the benefit of doubt and recommend this story to those who enjoy a sweet, sometimes sappy romance, with an element of danger, insta-love, and a cute pug. I enjoyed the last chapters much more than the first that were narrated on audio, so I would not recommend the audio format.

The cover by Jennifer Vance features a handsome firefighter, bare-chested, tattooed and wearing firefighter pants, the suspenders dropped to the sides—a very attractive representation of Hayden.

An Alisa Release Day Review: The Nerd and the Prince (Small-Town Dreams #1) by B.G. Thomas

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Prince Charming is the man next door.

Small-town business owner Jason Brewster has big dreams: world travel, adventure, and most of all, a passionate romance worthy of a fairy tale. But he doesn’t believe fantasies can come true….

Until Adam moves in next door.

He’s handsome, cultured, European, and best of all, interested in Jason. It’s like something out of the stories Jason loves.

But Adam—whose real name is Amadeo Montefalcone—has a secret. He’s royalty, prince of the small country of Monterosia. Only he doesn’t want to rule, and especially doesn’t want the loveless marriage waiting for him at home. So he ran away in search of true love. With a man. And with Jason, he finds it.

But Adam can’t run forever. The truth will come out. If Jason can forgive Adam’s deception, they might find their happily ever after.

This was just adorable.  Jason hasn’t really had any luck finding love but he dreams of being swept off his feet.  Amadeo just wants to be able to live his life as himself and finds more than just shelter when he runs away to a small town.

Jason and Amadeo build a quick friendship that they let slowly build into love.  Amadeo is basically Jason’s dream come true and with both of their love of the Greek god and mythology they have a lot of common ground.

I liked how this story really focused on the love between these characters and any “obstacles” were quickly taken care of or settled.  Getting to see both of the characters’ points of view helped with understand them, though for the most part they were quite open.  Amadeo was a genuinely nice man and it came out even more as we went about wooing Jason and how he feared hurting his family.  I loved Jason’s innocence, he knows what he wants but has never found someone to share it with and isn’t scared to let Amadeo be that someone.  I loved that everything turned out in the end with Amadeo’s family, I just wish we knew how they were going to spend their life (stay in Monterosia or in their small town).

The cover art by Alexandria Corza is gives a cute visual of their small town and Amadeo.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Hiding in Plain Sight (Camp H.O.W.L. #3) by Bru Baker

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

Happily ever after is right under their noses.

Harris has been keeping a big secret for years—his unrequited mate bond with his best friend, Jackson. He’s convinced himself that having Jackson in his life is enough. That, and his work at Camp H.O.W.L., keeps him going.

Things get complicated when Jackson applies for a high-ranking Tribunal job in New York City—far from Camp H.O.W.L. The position requires he relinquish all Pack bonds… and that’s when his wolf decides to choose a mate. Suddenly Jackson sees his best friend in a sizzling new light.

Their chemistry is through the roof, but they’re setting themselves up for broken hearts—and broken bonds—if Jackson can’t figure out a way to balance his career and the love that’s just been waiting for him to take notice.

Hiding in Plain Sight by Bru Baker finishes out the Camp H.O.W.L. trilogy that I’ve loved reading and become so fond of.  A series built around a great premise, a high security, upscale camp for weres, mostly teens, going through their First transformation, it’s featured a succession of couples who have meet through jobs there, mated, and then moved forward.  Mostly to a pack in New York City. More on that later.

Along with their stories we got to see some stories of the younger campers, the dynamics of the camp, and  exactly why the isolation and intense training was required to let those enrolled survive not only their First transformation but become even a Pack member.  The rigors at times placed were incredible yet needed.  I enjoyed this series on so many levels, from the interaction between the teenagers in transition and adults guiding them to the couples finding their way to each  other. At each step, the stories had so much to offer.

But it wasn’t until I was perhaps halfway through Hiding in Plain Sight that I realized that the author was preparing us to say goodbye to Camp HOWL.  I won’t tell you the specifics but I could see she was getting ready to move her characters forward even when I wasn’t sure I was ready for that myself.  Baker even introduced several new elements here, different supernatural species that interact with the weres and the Council that I’m wondering what roles that will play in upcoming stories.  Yes, after this  a new series centering around the Connell Pack in NYC begins.  That’s where all the other couples went to begin their new lives as mates.

As to Hiding in Plain Sight?  It’s that friends to mate love story with a dash of intrigue and adventure thrown in.  I thought the characters were great, their chemistry off the charts, and the secondary cast strong as usual.  The author was laying a lot of ground work here for the next series to come.  There’s an afterword (yes, I read those as well) that explains the new series that’s arriving. I have high hopes that its as strong as Camp HOWL is.  I will miss all the campers however, food fights, forest hunts, and the high drama  of teenagers and even one adult going through the changes and all those couples finding love and their mates.

I can’t wait now for the new series to start.  If you haven’t read this trilogy and are lovers of the supernatural, weres in particular, than grab up all three stories and do a little binge reading  in advance of the new series release!  I definitely recommend them all.

Cover Artist: Aaron Anderson.  I like the cover and that’s my idea of Harris too.  Lovely.

A Chaos Moondrawn Release Day Review: Savior (415 Ink #2) by Rhys Ford

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This is the second book in a series about five men who have forged a family and own a tattoo business. I would recommend reading these in order. Mace, a firefighter, has made himself Bear’s right hand man in helping raise the family, but it’s time he got some help, whether he asks for it or not.

We start by seeing 10 year old Mason, abandoned and locked in a closet by his father, being rescued by a firefighter. We understand why Mace becomes a firefighter, and why he always checks the closets while on the job and our hearts are already broken. It’s that crack that allows Rob, a tattoo artist at 415 Ink, to see a part of the real Mace. Being bossy, a tad controlling, and concentrating on the brothers’ personal lives is a way to keep the wolves at bay and maybe prove he deserves to be in this family. He still seems unsure, unable to ask for what he needs–afraid of what the answer will be. It’s ok though, because his brothers know and they have his back.

Rob’s best friend is Lilith, but we don’t get to see a lot of her. As with the first book, the tattoos are lovingly described. I can’t help but feel a little bit of a missed opportunity to learn more about tattoing since we get Rob’s POV as he’s learning while doing. In fact, I wish we knew a little bit more about everything. We get a little slice of Chinatown and the culture there. We get a slice of Rob’s disagreement with his father and his relationship with his family. We get slices of Ivo, but not with as much depth as our slice of Luke in the first book and that’s still just a slice. In the first book we see how close Luke and Gus are. Here we get that dynamic with Mace and Ivo, except Mace didn’t share with Ivo about, well, anything–not his father, not Rob, not his past. Actually, I am really starting to like Luke and he occupied all of two pages. The next book will likely be about Ivo and the cop he meets in the aftermath of Mace’s injuries.

There is more action in this one, although you would expect that due to his problems being in the present (which I won’t tell you about because of spoilers) rather than just past wounds, although those are also shown. You know that thing that should happen when you crack yourself open and show someone your scars? That actually happens here. That’s the best thing about this book: that moment you find your person. We get to see Rob and Mace fit together and weave their families together. And if it happens a little too easily, that Rob’s wealthy family just slot into Mace’s rough and tumble one, we need that after the horrors going on here because the abuse and violence don’t get glossed over. Mace certainly deserves some happiness and we do too.

There is a little nod to the Sinner’s series at a party that is nothing to worry about if you’ve not read them. Overall, this is a solid follow-up to the first book and I enjoyed it. I hope the author continues to layer in more depth to the world and all the characters with each new book.

The cover by Reece Notley is gorgeous, but this is not quite how I pictured Mace since he has some scars from childhood, as well as some minor gouges and burns from firefighting, however the abs are as described.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Andi Van on tour for Magic Wept, the new release in The Mages’ Guild Trilogy. Welcome, Andi!

♦︎♦︎

Once upon a time (the early 1990s), before the dawn of the internet as we know it, there was a BBS (that’s “Bulletin Board System”, and we had to use actual phone lines to dial into them via modem) in which I ran a role-playing group set in a mages’ guild. My character’s name was Trivintaie, and she was a redheaded mage with a penchant for mischief.

Yes, she was THAT Triv. The same Triv that starts off the whole Mages’ Guild Trilogy.

When I decided to revive her and write the trilogy, I knew I couldn’t make her the main character. Her time had passed, and too many other people had taken part in creating her guild for it to really be mine. So I set the trilogy a thousand years in the future and gave her world a new hero.

What I didn’t expect was that I’d pack it with such a diverse set of characters, most of which reflecting some part of the rainbow. It was completely unintentional, but once I realized it was happening, I was thrilled. One of my goals was to give young adults—and adults not quite so young—characters that maybe they could identify with in a way they might not have been able to before.

So I’d like to introduce you all to some of the new characters in the second book of the trilogy, Magic Wept.

But before that, I wanted to let you all know that there is indeed a giveaway. I will be randomly generating three winners on September 30th, all of whom will receive a plush purple cat (because nothing says magic like a K’yerin plushie—Tasis’ familiar is just full of himself enough to agree with that sentiment) and an ebook copy of Magic Wept. You can enter the giveaway at

http://andivan.com/magic-wept-blog-tour/.

And now, on to the characters.

The character I’d like to introduce you to today is Emlynn. Emlynn is a very short giantess.

Yeah, I know, it sounds funny. But it’s true.

Giants, in the trilogy’s world, are roughly twenty feet tall when they’re adults. Em, who is fully grown, is seven feet tall. This is like having a fully grown person the height of the average toddler. Among the giants, she’s made fun of for her height, and is understandably touchy about it. I hadn’t intended it when I created her, but I’d like to think she serves as a reminder that physical differences shouldn’t matter, and people shouldn’t be judged on them. As the saying goes, it’s what’s inside that counts.

As far as what she represents as far as the rainbow is concerned… Well, things are more vague with the elves and giants. Gender absolutely does not matter to them, in terms of attraction, and Em is no different. And while I could absolutely call her bisexual here, I’m actually going to go with pansexual, which I tend to think of as including genders outside of what’s thought of as the standard binary. (Don’t worry, my bisexual friends, your turn is coming.)

I adore Emlynn. She’s got a huge heart, and once she’s around people who love her as she is, she absolutely shines.

(Fun fact: MamaVan—that would be my mother—LOVED the giants in the first book, and demanded more of them in the second. I’d already planned on that, but I had yet to name Em when she did, so I decided to name Em in her honor. The name Emlynn is actually a mashup of MamaVan’s name.)

Like with Jorget, I had a choice of pulling an excerpt for Em from the beginning of the story, or from the end, where she’s gained some confidence. For her, I opted to pull something more from the middle. She’s starting to come into her own, and it’s showing, but she’s also not completely sure of herself.

Excerpt

“I have my strength,” Emlynn said, ignoring Reikos’s comment about Daro. “And a few spells, though the ones I know are basic and likely not much help in a fight, not unless I can get close enough to blind someone with light.”

“I can cast fireballs,” Jorget said, sounding rather pleased with himself.

“From the ceiling,” Emlynn said under her breath, though she gave Jorget a bit of a grin when she did to let him know she was teasing. Apparently he got the message, because he stuck his tongue out at her.

“Yeah, let’s not try any levitation spells,” Kelwin said with a grimace. “And Jorget, please, for the love of the Maker, do not try to teach Tasis a fireball spell. He just put that guild back together. I’d rather it didn’t get burned down already.”

Jorget made a noise of protest, but Reikos cut through it by addressing Emlynn. “You said something about light?”

“Yes,” the giantess said with a nod. “It’s more convenient than having to carry a torch or a candle.”

“Are you okay being up front with me? Because we’re going to need that light.” Emlynn nodded again, and Reikos continued. “Good. I want Jorget and Kelwin in the middle.” He looked at Kelwin and gave him an apologetic smile. “I know you can fight if you need to, but I’d rather not give Tasis an excuse to tear me apart later.”

“It’s fine,” Kelwin said, having expected it. He was fairly useless if they came across a serious threat anyway, and this way he could keep an eye on Jorget. The guy was definitely talented, from what he could tell, but he had no idea how to focus. Some time on the isle with Triv and the others would take care of that, but that would have to come after their foray into the depths of the mountain.

There was a flutter of wings, and Bahz landed on Emlynn’s shoulder. The bird had to be heavy, and his talons had to be gripping the giantess painfully, but she merely turned her head with a look of vague surprise on her face. Did the girl ever show strong emotion? I know the way, Bahz said. It’s safest if I’m up front as well.

“Of course,” Reikos allowed. “Well, then. Let’s go exploring.”

“We’re all going to die,” Jorget muttered to Kelwin as they found their place in the middle of the small group.

Kelwin tried to swallow down his laugh with only moderate success. “So optimistic,” he said. “We’ll get out of it alive. If we don’t, Tasis will resurrect me just to kill me himself.”

“Necromancy is forbidden,” Emlynn reminded him from the front of the group, Bahz still riding on her shoulder, quite at home there.

About Magic Wept

Jorget has no surname, no blood kin, and no hope of using his magical ability while he remains at Archai Castle, where the mad king reigns. With magic still outlawed, every experiment he performs could cost him his life. So when his mentor, the royal priest Denekk, is ordered to send Jorget on a journey to find a magical weapon, the young man jumps at the chance to prove himself. What he doesn’t realize is that things are never as simple as they seem.

Kelwin Tiovolk has settled into life in the Mages’ Guild of the Dragon’s Claw with his beloved, guild leader Tasis Kadara. But when word arrives that the king is searching for something to destroy the guild, he knows he has to leave behind the comfort of his new home to save what Tasis worked so hard to rebuild.

With enemies around every corner, Jorget and Kelwin need to pull off a miracle in order to save the guild. Luckily, they’re more than ready to stand strong together and keep what’s precious to them safe.

Hurricanes, Flooding, and Donations! This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Hurricanes, Flooding, and Donations!

So I was going to talk more about books, donations, and how literary September was but once again the news and nature turned my attention away from my planned topic.  That would be Hurricane Florence currently battering the eastern coast of the United States, causing flooding at heights never seen before, mass destruction and death.  And more scheduled to come.
For many, we feel closely connected to what’s happening in the Carolinas.  Whether it’s through families, friends, even through favorite authors like Megan Derr, Shira Anthony, Sasha Derr (Less Than Three Press), and more who have been marking themselves safe if not waterlogged and stressed out at home or just through all the pictures that are grabbing at our hearts on the media casts, this storm once again brings home how quickly things can change for people.  From safe and secure to homeless and suffering in a night or a matter of days.  Because of wind and rain, or the power of water flooding into a neighborhood and your home.
Then the calls go out.  What can we do?
So once again, I’m pulling out the Charity Navigator, which help weeds out the scams and scammers to give you the best places to donate should you wish to help where help is so clearly needed:

Relief for Hurricane Florence

Highly-rated charities providing aid and support in the Carolinas

Relief for Hurricane Florence : Charity Navigator

Relief for Hurricane Florence Header Image
Hurricane Florence made landfall as a strong Category 1 storm in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Ahead of the storm, the North and South Carolina coasts were issued mandatory evacuation orders. And, meteorologists continue to warn of the potential for “life-threatening storm surge and rainfall” in the hours and days following the hurricane’s landfall.
The governors of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia made state of emergency declarations for their states earlier this week. More than 1,000 National Guard troops have been deployed ahead of the storm to help with preparations and recovery after the storm hits. Residents that are not being evacuated are being told to prepare for record rainfall, dangerous flooding, and prolonged power outages.
Charity Navigator has compiled a list of highly-rated organizations planning to respond in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. These organizations will provide assistance to the communities affected by the storm. Donors can designate their donations to the cause on the organizations’ websites respectively, or use Charity Navigator’s Giving Basket to complete their donations. Please note, at this time it is not certain that all of these organizations will spend 100% of donations received on Hurricane Florence relief.*
You can find more information about inclusion on this list by visiting our ‘How Can My Charity Be Added To This List?‘ page.
We will return to our literary programming next week hopefully so don’t forget about our giveaway.  In the meantime Happy Reading and stay safe.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: To Love Again by Andria Large

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

This was a sweet love story, though it was insta-love, and oddly, it was written in first person POV, alternating between Jack and Warwick. I’m definitely not a fan of first person, nor am I a fan of insta-love, especially in this case where Jack had been living with an abuser. But, the author pulled it off and gave us an engaging story complete with HEA.

Jack was beaten and raped by his long-time lover, Greg, and escaped with his life, his wallet, and his phone. The last time he was in the ER he was treated by Dr. Warwick Aldridge, who gave Jack his card and info on the abuse hotline. When Jack ended up in a McDonald’s bathroom, bleeding from face wounds, he called Warwick and thus begins his journey to a better life.

Warwick is originally from England, and when they find out Greg obtained Jack’s new phone number and has been hanging around the hospital looking for him, Warwick suggests a trip to England where he can see his family and Jack can feel safe.

Only two weeks have gone by, yet Warwick calls Jack “love” and Jack returns his affection with simple touches and kisses. Though somewhat believable, with Jack’s inability to forget Greg, his trembling at the man’s name, his startle reflex when someone touches him, it is difficult to believe the two could be in love by the time the four weeks in England is up. There’s kissing and sex and plans for the future. But when Warwick is contacted by Greg, Jack chickens out and decides to stay in England. Is there hope for these two in a long distance relationship? Well, there’s still plenty of action after this point, including another appearance by Greg.

It’s an interesting story, the characters are engaging, and the action fast-paced. Only 127 pages, the story evolves quickly. To be honest, the first person voice wasn’t as bad as some I’ve read, but it does keep me from enjoying it thoroughly. And falling in love so quickly, especially for characters in their thirties who’ve held out so long already is a bit much to take.

Against the dark background of the cover by Melissa Albin, all that can be seen of two men are their entwined arms and their hands linked with the fingers pointing downward forming a heart. It’s very clever and grabs attention.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Andrew Grey today on tour with his new release All for You.  Welcome, Andrew!
Mostly in these guest posts, I try to say something original about the story that’s just releasing.  But I didn’t want to do that with this one.  See as I’m writing this post, I’m sitting in the writing room at home, listening to the rain.  Normally I love the sound of the drops on the trees outside my open window, but its been raining for two days solid and I’m getting a little tired of it.  Life is like that with a lot of things.  When it hasn’t rained in a while, we hope for it, and then we want it to stop.  Feast or famine is how it is with so much of life… at least for me.  But there are some things I hope I can never feast enough on and I hope famine stays away forever.
1)  Books – I can never get enough of them.
2)  Story ideas – So far the well hasn’t run dry and I hope it never does.  And the thought is famine is enough to… well let’s just not think about it.
3)  My Husband Dominic – I think you all have enough of an imagination to know what I mean.  Smile  After nearly 25 years together he;s still the center of my universe.
4)  My fans – I love each of you and am grateful for every single reader.
5)  Friends – You can never have enough

Blurb/Synopsis:

The only path to happiness is freedom: the freedom to live and love as the heart wants. Claiming that freedom will take all of the courage one young man has, but he won’t have to face it alone. In small, conservative Sierra Pines, California, Reverend Gabriel is the law. His son, Willy, follows his dictates, until he meets a man in Sacramento and reunites with him in his hometown—right under his father’s nose. Reggie is Sierra Pines’s newly appointed sheriff. His dedication to the job means not flaunting his sexuality, but when he sees Willy again, he can’t escape the feeling that they’re meant to be together. He’ll keep Willy’s secret until Willy is ready to let the world see who he really is. But if going up against the church and the townspeople isn’t enough, the perils of the work Reggie loves so much might mean the end of their romance before it even gets off the ground.

The reverend stood straight and met Reggie’s gaze. “And you feel free to do the same. My office and church are always open.”

“That’s great to know.” Reggie waited while the reverend looked to his left, and a man who had been sitting on one of the benches joined him.

Willy. It was Willy from the bar. Reggie opened his mouth to say something when the reverend turned back to him.

“Sheriff, this is my son, William.”

Willy looked even more scared than he had sitting at that table between the two rats. He was pale, his eyes downcast and his right hand shaking a little. Jesus, he was Reverend Gabriel’s son. Reggie was willing to bet that the reverend was not one of those new age, more enlightened men of the cloth. Somehow he didn’t think Reverend Gabriel had any sort of live-and-let-live attitude about gay people.

“It’s good to meet you.” Reggie extended his hand, and Willy blinked, seeming to realize that his life wasn’t going to come to an end.

“You too, sir.” They shook hands.

“What do you do?” Reggie asked.

Reverend Gabriel cleared his throat. “William will be following in my footsteps. He and I have spoken at length regarding his future, and we have come to an understanding.”

William didn’t argue, but he didn’t agree either.

“Have a good day, Sheriff.” Father and son left the station, and Reggie turned to the others, who were all watching him with wide eyes.

“Is something wrong?” he asked the room, and they all immediately returned to their work, so Reggie went back to his office. A throat clearing nervously drew his gaze up from his desk. “Yes, Marie?”

“Umm.” She now had that scared rabbit look. “I have the memos done.” She handed them to him and looked outside the room. “You… I…. Well… I’m going to miss you.”

Reggie narrowed his eyes. “Where am I going?”

“He… the reverend… well, he pretty much decides what happens here. People listen to him, and so do the town leaders. They’ll fire you if he says so.” She quivered like a leaf. “And you were doing such good things here already.”

“Don’t worry, Marie. Nothing of the kind is going to happen. First thing, I’m very good at what I do and will build a competent and well-run sheriff department if I have to do it from the ground up. And second, I have a sister who is married to the governor’s son. I can get a message to Sacramento that will be listened to within the capitol faster than the reverend can pass out communion wafers. That’s part of the reason I’m here.” Reggie leaned back in the chair. “I never use that connection unless I have to, which is part of the reason it’s very effective when I do. So don’t worry.” He looked over the memos, approved them, and handed them back. “Please get them to everyone today. Thank you.”

One thing was for certain—no one was going to get away with bullying him.

“I will, and there’s a call that just came in.” She handed him the details, and he got up and left the office, heading out to the scene of an apparent motorcycle race.

A Lila Release Day Review: The Mystery of the Moving Image (Snow & Winter #3) by C.S. Poe

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

It’s summer in New York City, and antique shop owner Sebastian Snow is taking the next big step in his relationship with NYPD homicide detective, Calvin Winter: they’re moving in together. What should have been a wonderful week of playing house and celebrating Calvin’s birthday comes to an abrupt end when a mysterious package arrives at the Emporium.

Inside is a Thomas Edison Kinetoscope, a movie viewer from the nineteenth century, invented by the grandfather of modern cinema, W. K. L. Dickson. And along with it, footage of a murder that took place over a hundred years ago.

Sebastian resists the urge to start sleuthing, even if the culprit is long dead and there’s no apparent danger. But break-ins at the Emporium, a robbery, and dead bodies aren’t as easy to ignore, and Sebastian soon realizes that the century-old murder will lead him to a modern-day killer.

However, even with Sebastian’s vast knowledge of Victorian America and his unrelenting perseverance in the face of danger, this may be the one mystery he won’t survive.

The Mystery of the Moving Image brings the readers into the story from the opening scene, “Five bucks says there’s a dead body inside.” We are right there, sleuthing with Sebastian once again. Trying to predicts the reason behind the mystery and Calvin’s reaction to the whole mess. Like in previous instances, Sebastian is the magnet that attracts the chaos.

We get some new characters, but our favorite suspects are back to throw Sebastian’s assumptions off. Jealousy brings Calvin and Sebastian closer, and it’s nice to see how they worked in unison. By now, they have learned to anticipate each other’s actions and reactions. I really enjoyed Neil’s part in the story and how he now relates to Sebastian and Calvin.

This installment those feels less complicated than the previous ones. Perhaps since we know the players it’s easier to follow the story, but some areas felt as if the mystery was just there to bring us back into Sebastian’s and Clavin’s lives instead of a real plot twist. Even so, it was hard to put the book aside.

I learned more than I needed about the historical items around the story and the development of film as an industry. Plus, I think poor Sebastian was put through the wringer in this book. Glad he had his family and friends to play a part in bringing his life back to rights.

The cover by Reese Dante it’s a bit simpler than the previous two but includes  Sebastian and one of the main elements in the mystery. Perfect for the series itself.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Leigh Dillion here today talkaing about her new novella Raising the Bar. Welcome, Leigh.

Hello, and thank you for stopping by to check out my new novella, Raising the Bar! This story started out as a story about horses and, oh yeah, a couple of guys. To my surprise, it quickly turned into a study of two men with completely opposite character traits. Every story I write becomes a meet-and-greet at some point, with characters who started out as vague concepts suddenly taking on personalities I never planned for them. In this case, what started out as a simple contrast of conservative character vs. outspoken character morphed into Irresistible Force vs. Immovable Object. Only this time, it turns out the irresistible force secretly longs to be stopped, and the immovable object needs a good boot to the rear to wake him up! Speaking truth is bad manners in some circles, but sometimes it’s good to clear the air and decorum be damned. Tonio Benedetto turned out to be quite the advocate of speaking one’s mind, as you can see in the excerpt. But do you think it was wise, or is it just one more way to blow up a promising love affair?

Blurb:

Destin Bellingham has inherited a problem. Thanks to his late playboy father, Destin faces putting a For Sale sign on his family’s historic horse farm. Getting his talented stallion, Black Sambuca, into the Grand Prix show ring would put Bellmeade back on the map—if only someone could make “Sam” behave like a show horse.

Disgraced top rider Tonio Benedetto has his own problems, but he can work magic with difficult jumpers, so Destin hires him despite his bad-boy reputation.  The street-smart, openly gay loudmouth from Miami and the closeted, buttoned-down son of Old Dominion Virginia make a rocky pairing, but time is running out to save Bellmeade from bankruptcy.

Opposites attract, sparks of tension grow into flames of passion. But if Tonio fails to tame Sam, will true love become a lost cause too?

Excerpt:

“Why so grim?” Tonio asked.

“Probably because I’m feeling pretty grim right now.”

“Uh-oh. Bad news?”

“Just the usual.” Destin shook his head. “If Sam doesn’t jump, this farm is going down the toilet. Not today, not tomorrow, but next year, if something doesn’t change, it’s going on the auction block.”

“Hey, I’m trying, okay?” Tonio wrinkled his forehead. “Whatever’s going on with Sam, it’s different than stuff I’ve dealt with before. I know I’ll crack him, but right now I just haven’t figured out what direction I need to come from.”

“I understand, and I’m not blaming you.” Destin paused, practicality battling with panic. “I know you’re trying. I appreciate what you’re doing more than I can put into words. It’s just that I’ve been thinking about things, and I’m starting to wonder—” He broke off, not sure he could trust his voice to stay calm.

Tonio’s face tightened, and he pressed his full lips into a razor-thin line. “Hey, I’m still fighting,” he said. “You gonna quit on me?”

“I don’t want to, but what am I going to do? It’s a mess. It’s all just a huge….” Destin raised his arms and dropped them again.

“So yeah, you’re giving up.” Tonio released the girth and jerked the saddle off, his disgusted expression deepening.

“I am not giving up! I just don’t know what to do anymore.”

Tonio stopped stripping Sam and glared at Destin over the horse’s sweaty back. “Well, you sure as hell aren’t going to listen to me, are you?” he snapped. “I thought I had some pretty good ideas, but I guess Miami answers don’t cut it for Virginia problems, do they?”

Destin rubbed his eyes. The barn floor felt like it was spinning under his feet. Everything was spinning—out of control.

“I need to think,” he said, his voice oddly faint in his own ears. “Just give me time to think.”

“You know what?” Tonio’s eyes burned in the shaded light of the aisle. “You think too fucking much. You wanna keep this farm? Stop thinking. Stop blaming your dad. Get real and do something.”

“I am doing something. That’s what I brought you here for.”

“Yeah, and you’re sinking because you put all your eggs in one stupid basket and did. Not. Listen. To. Me!” Tonio punctuated each word with a finger-jab in Destin’s direction. “You’re not going to fight to keep this farm. You’re not gonna fight to keep me, either. You’re so used to people handing you things, you’re gonna run out the clock on our contract and let all of it swirl down the shithole, and that’s a fucking shame because I love Bellmeade, I could really get used to being with you, and unlike some people, I don’t feel like dumping everything in the garbage and walking away.”

About the Author

Leigh Dillon is a native of horse-happy North Central Florida but has deep family roots in the Virginia and West Virginia areas. Coming of age in the dinosaur days of cable television, when fledgling channels filled their empty blocks of programming time by airing entire equestrian competitions, Leigh’s young brain became infected with a lifelong mania for show jumping, three-day eventing, and other exotic horse sports. Though tragically denied a pony of her own in childhood, Leigh has wreaked her revenge by including equine characters in almost everything she writes.

A bookbinder and librarian by trade, Leigh has also worked on local thoroughbred horse farms. Leigh’s short fiction has been featured twice in the Florida Writers Association annual story collection, and one of her book-length works received Book of the Year honors at the 2017 Royal Palm Literary Award.
