Hi everyone! First let me give Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words a great big thank you for hosting my cover reveal. Thanks guys!

I’m super excited to be here today to show off the beautiful cover for my upcoming release. Lost Souls Found comes out on April 17^th, and it’s the next book in my Requiem Inc. series. When I wrote the first one, Ghost of a Chance, I didn’t know if I’d get the opportunity to write Sam and Michael’s story. But their relationship was important to the characters, so I wrote in Sam’s crush and some hints as to how Michael feels about him. So I was thrilled when Dreamspinner gave me the green light for Lost Souls Found because I got to bring their journey to love to the page.

Their relationship isn’t the most easy one. They definitely both have some learning to do. But there’s no doubt they’ll get there in the end.

And to showcase this story, Aaron Anderson worked his magic again and brought a gorgeous cover to life. The cover model is how I picture Sam, and he’s got a mischievous streak. Just look at that smirk! Aaron also did a great job mirroring the look of the first book, while making this cover wholly it’s own. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the right one.

You don’t have to have read Ghost of a Chance to understand Lost Souls found; they are both standalone. I recommend they be read in order so you can get a little background first, though it’s not strictly necessary. Either way, I hope you get a chance to pick up this book when it comes out.

Kris T. Bethke has been a voracious reader for pretty much her entire life and has been writing stories for nearly as long. An avid and prolific daydreamer, she always has a story in her head. She spends most of her free time reading, writing, or knitting/crocheting her latest project. Her biggest desire is to find a way to accomplish all three tasks at one time. A classic muscle car will always turn her head, and naps on the weekend are one of her greatest guilty pleasures. She lives in a converted attic with a way too fluffy cat and the voices in her head. I was asked once here at Scattered Thoughts about how much of myself goes into my characters. Well how is this for an answer?

Have you ever been the “victim” of a one-night stand? What I mean by “victim” is not abuse or a ruffee or being forced to do something you didn’t want to do and felt horrible after or anything like that. What I mean is when you meet someone and for some reason you find yourself right in bed the first night. Maybe he was just so darned hot you couldn’t say no. Maybe it was a magickal night, exciting and romantic, even though you’d just met him. Your heart soared thinking, “if this is only the first night, what is tomorrow and the next day and the next going to be like?”

Only to find out that you are a one-night stand. That he has no intention of giving you a next day and a next and a next. You’re lucky if he doesn’t leave (or make you leave) five minutes after he’s…well…finished (to say it delicately).

Happened to me! Several times. Especially when I was a young and naïve gay man, just first exploring my life as a gay man, discovering, finding the world of being gay. I remember this guy named Jack who went home with me, on the first night. I didn’t want to. I wanted to wait. He said, “Let me guess. You went out tonight promising yourself you would be a good boy.” I nodded. He said, “Well I went out tonight promising myself that I would be a bad boy.” What a line! I took him home.

He was so hot! OMG! And not only a good kisser, but a good everything. Did I say good? He was incredible.

And he left almost instantly after he was…done. He didn’t even want to make sure that I was…well…done. He did though. “So just f*ck him and leave him,” I said, and I got the song and dance about how he had to get up early in the morning and blah blah blah. When I asked for his number he said his phone had been turned off but if I gave him my number…. You get the picture.

Over thirty years later, I still think about that guy. How it could have been different. What life might have been like if he’d given me a chance. Not that I am unhappy. I am extremely happy with my love life. But as humans, we wonder sometimes. As a writer I can’t help but wonder.

And as a writer, I can sort of do something about it. I can create for myself a similar scenario (after all, I had more than one “Jack” in my day) and write a story. But since I write romance, I can give it that happy ending we all love. Where “Jack”—in this case Frank—does give his one-night stand a second chance. And as it turns out and third. And a forth, and a fifth and….

I had to explore what would make a man want only one-night stands. Not want more. Not want love. I had to explore what would make him change his mind. And most importantly, do it in a way that you—the constant reader—would not hate his guts. Not give him a chance to change and find out that love really is that answer.

I think I did that in my story, “Orange.”

And I hope you’ll give me a chance to prove it to you.

And of course, the other guy is going to get his happy ending. In more ways than one! *GRIN*

About the Author

B.G. Thomas lives in Kansas City with his husband of more than a decade and their fabulous dogs Sarah Jane and Oliver. He is blessed to have a lovely daughter as well as many extraordinary friends. He has a great passion for life.

B.G. loves romance, comedies, fantasy, science fiction, and even horror—as far as he is concerned, as long as the stories are character driven and entertaining, it doesn’t matter the genre. An Alisa Release Day Review: Touch by Remmy Duchene

One can’t walk the path of darkness and expect to escape unscathed.

At eighteen, Foster Erickson stepped out of the closet into a world of homelessness, prostitution, and drugs. Years later, he’s pulled it together and is ready to rebuild.

Determined not to let the demons win, Foster starts university with a plan to keep others from making the same mistakes he did. The last thing he expects is Sylvester Roberts.

After years of working with his father, Sylvester decides to step out on his own. University at his age is strange, but for him, failure isn’t an option. After flunking a few tests, Sylvester’s professor assigns him a tutor—Foster Erickson. The moment they meet, Sylvester knows Foster isn’t like other guys.

As the darkness hovers and Sylvester begins falling, he will have to decide if helping Foster fight his demons will be worth it in the end.

This was a story that showed that when you really care and love someone that it will all work out in the end. Foster hasn’t had many good experiences since he was kicked out of his home at eighteen and is averse to being touched. Sylvester is finally doing what he wants and he can be very patient in that regard.

While I enjoyed this story and felt for the characters I didn’t feel any real connection to them, this story was more along the lines of being told what happened not shown. I couldn’t help but think that Foster was able to get over his fear quite quickly, he has been in therapy for this for years and suddenly he finds a guy he wants to sleep with and he can now work it all out, it didn’t connect for me. There were also many time jumps that we were told about what happened or that I felt didn’t line up with the timing for the fall semester at school.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words have kindly hosted me a number of times with my new releases – thank you very much! And every time I see the name it makes me smile. I like the idea of rogue words. I love words, period, but rogue ones, now those must be some great words.

So I have a few time wasters that are related to words and I thought I’d share a few of my favorites.

Words With Friends. Basically it’s Scrabble without stepping on anyone’s copyright. I play a number of people who I know, but I also play with random players the game selects for me. It’s pretty good at matching players with like abilities so you aren’t always trouncing or getting trounced. The only thing I don’t like about it is that when I go several weeks without playing because I am super busy, it drops all my games.

4 pics 1 word. I think I joined this one late in the game as I know it was big quite a while ago. I do love trying to figure out what the words are based on the pictures. There’s almost always one that seems out of left field compared with the others. When I’m really stuck, I try to pretend I never saw the one that doesn’t belong and concentrate on the other three. It’s always amusing to me when the one that I thought was so different from the others was not the one I thought it was!

And brand new to me and currently my favorite is Wordscapes. This one gives you a little crossword puzzle kind of layout and a group of six letters at the bottom. You need to make words out of the six letters to fill the crossword. You get points for making words that don’t go on the board but that are real words. The hardest word is almost always the ‘bonus’ word, which doesn’t connect to the rest of the grid. It’s much easier to figure out that last word when you know where at least one of the letters go! When I get stuck on this one, I’ll put it down and usually coming back to it fresh a while later helps me ‘see’ that last word I was looking for.

If you see me frowning at my phone – I’m probably playing one of those three games.

A Free Dreamer Release Day Review: Exodus ( Heaven Corp #2) by CC Bridges

Though Ian’s from the low levels and the labor class, he’s used to dealing with the pampered society of Heaven. He’s assigned to protect Hank while angels, cybernetically modified humans who defend Heaven, investigate the assassination attempt. Doing his job means Ian must ignore his growing interest in Hank. Acting on their mutual attraction would certainly get Ian reprogrammed, something neither of them can afford.

When Hank follows Ian to a popular BDSM club in Downside and his ID chip is lost during a nearly fatal mugging, he finds himself locked out of Heaven. As Ian fights to get them home, rumors of impending war begin to circulate—along with more troubling news that Ian is wanted for Hank’s murder. While struggling to keep the man he has come to love safe, Ian must find out who’s behind the plot and if it’s a catalyst for war or just a convenient excuse.

“Exodus” is part two of the “Heaven Corp” series. I read part one “Angel 1089” over three years ago and have to admit I don’t remember much. But I never had any trouble getting into this book, so “Exodus” works perfectly fine as a stand-alone.

This book was a great mix of two things I love in books: SciFi and BDSM. The world building was really well done and it was to understand the world this was set in. It was kind of creepy , to be honest. I loved all the little details C.C. Bridges worked into her world building. It made the whole universe seem that much more realistic.

I usually don’t read Fantasy that deals with angels because I don’t like reading religious books. But “Heaven Corp.” is a brilliant exception to that rule. There is a god and there are angels, but neither of them has anything to do with religion. God is a God AI and the angels aren’t some mythical beings but people with metal wings that allow them to fly. An ingenious idea and very unique.

The BDSM part was wonderful as well. The dynamic between Hank and Ian was absolutely smoldering with sexual tension. But it was also obvious that they really, really cared for each other and that it wasn’t just about the sex. Ian is such a wonderfully caring and loving Dom. I loved that the relationship wasn’t rushed. It’s a very slow build till they get together but that fit the two of them perfectly. That way, we get to see how their feelings for each other evolve and become deeper.

I loved both of our MCs. At first glance, Hank is your stereotypical bratty and spoiled sub. But when you get to know him better, you get to see beneath that facade. And underneath lies a very likable, intelligent young man, who definitely has his own demons to fight. Since the story gets told from both POVs, we get to know both of them intimately. I took a liking to Ian right from the start.

The plot had me hooked right from the very first page. I finished this book within two days. If not for real life interfering, I probably would have finished this in one sitting. There are so many twists and turns, I was practically breathless from following it all. The balance between romance and Mystery/SciFi plot was perfect in my opinion. Neither takes away from the other.

You don’t need to be a hard-core SciFi fan to enjoy “Exodus”, nor do you need to be a hard-core BDSM or M/M romance fan. There’s a bit of everything and never too much of anything. A perfect mix, if you ask me.

It’s a real shame there are only two books in the series and book one deals with different protagonists. But the ending does leave with me some hope that we’ll see more of this world, if not our protagonists. And it’s high time I read more by this obviously brilliant author.

Read it, you won’t regret it, trust me.

An Alisa Audiobook Review: Camp H.O.W.L. by Bru Baker and Dorian Bane (Narrator)

Moonmates exist, but getting together is going to be a beast….

When Adrian Rothschild skipped his “werewolf puberty,” he assumed he was, somehow, human. But he was wrong, and he’s about to go through his Turn with a country between him and his Pack—scared, alone, and eight years late.

Dr. Tate Lewis’s werewolf supremacist father made his Turn miserable, and now Tate works for Camp H.O.W.L. to ease the transition for young werewolves. He isn’t expecting to offer guidance to a grown man—or find his moonmate in Adrian. Tate doesn’t even believe in the legendary bond; after all, his polygamist father claimed five. But it’s clear Adrian needs him, and if Tate can let his guard down, he might discover he needs Adrian too.

A moonmate is a wolf’s missing piece, and Tate is missing a lot of pieces. But is Adrian up to the challenge?

This was a nice story. Both of these characters had a lot of their own issues to get through for their relationship to work. Adrian doesn’t connect the dots until it’s almost too late that he is going to go through his Turn. Tate has made his life helping the young werewolves successfully complete their change and even if he’s hiding from himself.

Adrian has been living as a disappointment to his family ever since he didn’t go through his Turn like all those his age and I could feel his sadness and how detached he feels from his family because of this. Tate has been running from the memory of his childhood for so long and helping others but you could see that even as he succeeds in helping most of the teens he doesn’t have a deep connection or friendship with many people.

I could see that they were both looking for somewhere to belong or someone to belong to but were afraid to voice that. I still have to wonder at the end of story what about Adrian’s genetics caused him to go through the Turn late and it didn’t seem that anyone knew or seemed inclined to really find out. I loved that they were both able to find somewhere to belong and be together with the support of Adrian’s family and their friends.

Dorian Bane did a great job narrating this story. I was able to connect with the characters and feel their emotions in his reading as he used different voices for the characters. His voice changes so much you really get to see the differences and personality of the characters.

A Lila Audiobook Review: Off the Beaten Path by Cari Z. and Jack Wesley (Narrator)

When Ward Johannsen’s little girl Ava shifted into a werewolf, she was taken into custody by the feds and shipped off to the nearest pack, all ties between father and daughter severed. Ward burned every bridge he had discovering her location, and then almost froze to death in the Colorado mountains tracking her new pack down. And that’s just the beginning of his struggle.

Henry Dormer is an alpha werewolf and an elite black ops soldier who failed his last mission. He returns home, hoping for some time to recuperate and help settle the pack’s newest member, a little pup named Ava who can’t shift back to her human form. Instead he meets Ward, who refuses to leave his daughter without a fight. The two men are as different as night and day, but their respect for each other strikes a spark of mutual interest that quickly grows into a flame. They might find something special together—love, passion, and even a family—if they can survive trigger-happy pack guardians, violent werewolf politics, and meddling government agencies that are just as likely to get their alpha soldiers killed as bring them home safely.

Off The Beaten Path is one of the best stories I have read or listened to this year. The actual plot, characters, and settings were fresh and interesting even when it was a shifter story. The world-build goes hand-in-hand with the current time and it’s easy to imagine this semi-dystopian place where werewolves are part of everyday society.

The pacing in the story gives the reader enough information about where the story was heading without missing the opportunity to include small details like smells and the weather. Even the type of cars, electronics, and clothes played an important role without weighting the story down.

The only thing I wanted more of were details about the pack’s life after everything was set and done. How everything changed and how everyone reacted. How they dealt with the changes and the new work—if any—the alphas got assigned.

Overall, this is a perfect story for those who want something different. It has a lovely romance, the right about of smexy times, a lot of flirting, angsts, and drama without taking from the tension and the serious side of the plot. It has great balance and a hit of humor.

The narration by Jack Wesley gave the book the extra push needed to make it four dimensional. It was more than then narration, it was the whole production. From the characterizations to the distinctions when the scenes took place outside or over the phone. Even the video calls had their own distinct feel. It was worth listening to it.

The cover by Brooke Albrecht shows Ward and Henry in front of a setting that matches the story’s descriptions. It really works.

An Alisa Review: Alpha Dragon: Bronaz by Kellan Larkin and Kaz Crowley

Kuras spends his days helping pregnant humans and omegas adjust to their pregnancies all while dreaming of his own someday. Bronaz doesn’t seem to want to make up his mind about their mating and pulls Kuras close just to push him away later.

In this book we go deeper into the mystery that began in the first book and even find some more about the people causing trouble but there is more to be done to fix the problems. This book had the alpha doing the push and pull instead of the omega like the last book. I just can’t help but feel like there is something missing from the stories and they end right after the characters fulfill their mating, there just isn’t much about them actually working through their relationship past accepting the mating.

The cover art is nice and continues to follow the pattern for the series.

Gay Superheroes and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Gay Superheroes

Last week I started off the discussion of LGBT Superheroes because of the new film Black Panther and the colossal response that’s its engendered, due in no small part to representation. Of course it helps that its an outstanding movie too. But people of color are seeing themselves represented in a major motion picture in a way that they’ve never seen before and perhaps never been possible before. Its origin? A comic called Black Panther.

I don’t think you can underestimate the power of seeing yourself represented…in a book, graphic or not, or on a screen, small or large. The above section of a comic book panel belongs to a long running comic book called Life with Archie. Here’s the full cover:

Amazing isn’t it. More and more of the regular comics introduced gay characters or had characters come “out of the closet” in recent years. Anyone remember seeing this Green Lantern panel?

And while the “mainstream” comics have been busy, so have many Quiltbag authors for writing LGBT superhero books and graphic novels. Yes, it turns out there is a burgeoning niche and demand here. We want to see gay superheroes too!

Oh boy, now we’re talkin’! I’ll be seeing BP this week, and now you are stoking my love of superheroes even more. I’m looking forward to see what others rec. There’s some fanfic that is decent, as well, as well as gay sidekicks (and then there’s separating out paranormal powers from superhero stories), but here are ones with gay MCs that I’ve read and enjoyed over the years:

– QUEEROES by Bereznai – light-hearted look at gay teens w/ powers. My first such story – me: “What?! There are gay superheroes?!” *faints*.
– HERO by Moore – misfit group of teen superheroes.
– MASKS series by Thorne – another team of YA superheros, still enjoyable.
– BROKEN HEROS series by Perdita – now how about some college superheroes.
– FIERCE by Rosen – or a nerdy college freshman.
– PANOPOLIS series by Cari Z – creative take that has you rooting for the villain.
– WAYNE OF GOTHAM by Hickman – Not the best, but decent for me – it’s a gay Dark Knight after all.
– KING CAGE series by Mike Stop Continues – new & offbeat; urban graffiti superhero.

I think Roan and Holden from “INFECTED” series by Andrea Speed to be LGBTQ superheroes :). I admit I don’t follow comic. Not my cup of tea. So I don’t know much about LGBTQ superhero in comic unless they’re being turned into movie

Deadpool is pansexual. His kiss in 2009 with gay superhero Rictor was the first same-sex kiss in a mainstream Marvel comic. The movie Deadpool 2 will feature a bisexual and polyamorous superhero!

A Lila Audiobook Review: Ante Up by Kim Fielding and Narrator: Andrew McFerrin

Now he haunts Las Vegas, stealing blood and money from drunken gamblers and staying on the fringe of the powerful vampire organization known as the Shadows. His existence feels empty and meaningless until he meets beautiful Peter Gehrardi, who can influence others with his thoughts.

An attraction flares instantly, bringing a semblance of life to Ante’s dead heart. But the Shadows want Peter too, and they’re willing to kill to get him. As Ante and Peter flee, they learn more about themselves and each other, and they discover that the world is a stranger place than either of them imagined. With enemies at their heels and old mistakes coming back to exact a price, how can Ante and Peter find sanctuary?

Ante Up is a different type of paranormal story. When the majority of the characters are vampires, not all the traditional troupes are followed. I enjoyed those differences and Ante’s Croatian background. The number of details worked well for the story and added to its depth.

The author did a nice job making Ante unique. He’s not the traditionally rich, alpha vampire with a legion at his feet. He’s a down the mill hustler whose only worry is where to be at sunrise. He’s comfortable living in the fridges and doesn’t believe in causing harm to survive. Most of the men he feeds from are as lonely as he is, and their times together are beneficial for both of them.

Enters Peter to change Ante’s organized life. With his quick charm and good looks, he brings out Ante’s curiosity. He’s not sure about his heritage or his powers but he tries to keep both under wraps. Just like Ante, he’s not the traditional hero, but it works for them.

The more time they spend together, the more they discover about themselves and other paranormals. The descriptions, settings, and new characters are interesting and only added to the plot.

The meeting and battle at the end felt a bit rushed. After so many details, it was unexpected to have such a simple resolution. Overall, it’s a good story if you are looking for more than sparkling vampires.

The narration by Andrew McFerrin worked well with the story. The characters came to life and he showed Ante’s slight accent.

The Cover by Aaron Anderson follows the Dreamspun Beyond style and has a depiction of Ante.
