Anna Martin is from a picturesque seaside village in the southwest of England and now lives in the Bristol, a city that embraces her love for the arts. After spending most of her childhood making up stories, she studied English literature at university before attempting to turn her hand as a professional writer.

Apart from being physically dependent on her laptop, Anna is enthusiastic about writing and producing local grassroots theater (especially at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where she can be found every summer), going to visit friends in other countries, and reading anything thatís put under her nose.

Does research play a role into choosing which genre you write? Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

Research is usually the last thing I want to do when I start writing, which is probably why I’ve done so much sci fi and fantasy and paranormal and so few historicals and contemporaries. I have made exceptions for things that really interested me, though. For Handle With Care, I happen to have a phenomenal friend and ficwife who also happens to work for CPS, so she was instrumental in helping me figure this story out.

Have you ever had to put an ‘in progress’ story aside because of the emotional ties with it? You were hurting with the characters or didn’t know how to proceed?

Oh my gosh, yes. I’m still working on a story I started two years ago because I just haven’t been able to wrap my head around how to do it all justice. There are some books that resonate so deep that it hurts more to contemplate finishing them badly then not finishing them at all.

Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

I like both, but I confess a weakness for an HFN, because that usually means a sequel is incoming 😉

Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

I love romances! I love that romance as a genre spans every other genre. There’s always space for romance.

Do you have a favorite among your own stories? And why?

My favorite work changes frequently. Right now, actually, I’m damn proud of Handle With Care because it was such a departure for me. No gun fights, no knife fights, no explosions, barely one fist fight and nobody even draws blood…what is this book even about? The answer is: EMOTIONS! So many emotions.

What’s next for you as an author?

I’ve got some big plans for 2019! I’m working on the sequel to another Dreamspinner Press book right now, and am contracted for a hugely fun action/adventure/mystery with them. Think of it like a contemporary version of The Mummy without the paranormal aspects of that film (I know, whyyyy? But it’ll work, I promise). It’s going to be awesome.

If you write contemporary romance, is there such a thing as making a main character too “real”? Do you think you can bring too many faults into a character that eventually it becomes too flawed to become a love interest?

Honestly, if I don’t like a character, I won’t read about them. I don’t care if he or she is the most complex, brilliant, tortured person ever created, with enough compelling backstory to blow my mind. If they’re also an asshole who ends up slow to change, or doesn’t change at all—screw them. I’m done.

What traits do you find the most interesting in someone? Do you write them into your characters?

I love figuring out what a person does with themselves while they’re alone. Everyone becomes something slightly other than themselves when they’re around other people. When a character feels comfortable enough to act like they’re alone while being with the person they love—that interests me.

Have you ever put a story away, thinking it just didn’t work? Then years/months/whatever later inspiration struck and you loved it? Is there a title we would recognize if that happened?

Tempest. It took me for effing ever to finish that one. I wrote seventy thousand words in three weeks, then lost my mind and shoved it in a drawer for over a year.

Have you ever had an issue in RL and worked it through by writing it out in a story? Maybe how you thought you’d feel in a situation?

I’m going to take this question in not the spirit it was written in and say—I work out how I imagine getting into fights in some of my books. Obviously not exactly, since I write a lot of guys and I’m not one and the techniques are often different, but it’s safe to say that I think about self-defense a LOT, and that preoccupation comes out in a lot of my books.

Ever drunk written a chapter and then read it the next day and still been happy with it? Trust me there’s a whole world of us drunk writers dying to know.

I drunk-wrote a sex scene once, came back to it the next day and was like, “Wait, how many hands is that? How many penises? Did I write in a dildo too?”

With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain? To get away? To move past? To widen our knowledge? Why do you write?

Cliché time! I write because I just love it. I love doing it, I love the realization of scenes from my head onto the page, I love telling stories. I have a baby now and I read to her every morning, and I can’t wait until she’s old enough to tell me stories back. I think it’s an intrinsic part of being human, and a beautiful thing.

One corner of Simon’s mouth curled upward. “Are you trying to tell me I’m not gay enough?”

Charlie moved to cover his face with his hands, nearly braining himself with the hammer. Bracing his forearm across his forehead instead, he breathed into a pause, quietly, steadily. Then he dropped his arm, and leveled a direct look at Simon. “I’m sorry I barged into your space, and messed it up with my clumsy come-on. I didn’t stop to ask if you were into guys, or take into account the fact you might have lost someone. Or might not even, you know, want to . . . whatever with me. I just got it into my head that I needed to know what it would be like to kiss you, to kiss any guy—not that you were the most handy one. It’s your eyes. They’re so damn blue, and I haven’t thought about anyone on a daily basis in so long, and I had to know.”

His face was red, and the quiet breathing had accelerated into a soft gasping, as though Charlie had just finished a run. Simon stepped in, closing the distance between them, and paused for long enough for Charlie to step back, dodge aside, or simply raise a hand. Say no. He stiffened a little, eyes widening, but otherwise remained still.

“Any guy?” Simon arched an eyebrow.

“You in particular.”

“Why the ice cream?”

Charlie’s eyelids fluttered, briefly. “Because there’s no way anyone can eat ice cream and feel sad.”

Oh God. Simon’s next breath shook slightly. “The puzzle?”

“Because you needed time to think, and something to do with your hands.”

“What are you trying to tell me?”

They were standing so close together that the straightening of Charlie’s shoulders was a twitch at the periphery of Simon’s vision. The thunk at their feet would be the hammer. Then Charlie was leaning in, a hand rising to curl behind Simon’s neck. He paused there, for the space of a single breath, before pressing his lips to Simon’s in a gentle kiss.

A whisper passed between them, a susurrus of words. Simon didn’t bother figuring them out; he tucked his free hand behind Charlie’s shoulder and pulled him closer, angled his head slightly, and deepened the sweet, tentative kiss.

Charlie’s lips were the sort a man might dream about. Full and plump and utterly distracting. Simon kissed both before tending the top and bottom in turn, exploring the mouth he’d fantasized about. The tip of Charlie’s tongue sent a tingling burn across his skin. He shivered. Goose bumps prickled his nape, his shoulders, his arms. The kiss deepened again, becoming less tentative, less question, more statement.

Simon stroked his hand down Charlie’s arm. The sharp, clean scent of Charlie’s sweat filled his senses. The taste of Charlie thrilled his tongue. Prickling skin gave way to keen-edged arousal. A southward rush of blood.

Head light, thoughts swimming, Simon pulled away. Just his lips. Charlie chased him, caught him in another kiss, and Simon got lost somewhere on the way to reason, answering the surer flick of Charlie’s tongue, the sweetly satisfied exhalation of breath.

Charlie bumped into him, nudging him backward. Simon broke out of the kiss again, stepping away to lessen the chance of losing himself a second time. Third time. The sun could have set and the stars come out. A year might have passed by. As he stood there, panting, gaze locked with one of deep and velvety brown, only the weight of the small pot in one hand served as a reminder of why he’d come next door.

Surely it hadn’t been for a kiss.

He’d have traveled much farther for this kiss.

October’s Scary Joys and Frights! This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

October’s Scary Joys and Frights!

This week’s topic came to me because one of my friends has been sending out pictures of her house that she’s getting ready for Halloween. Now she and her family are renown for how their house shows. It looks as though it was professionally knocked out and produced by someone in Hollywood. Nope, just in the wonderfully warped brain by my friend and her family. This year? They are adding actors. Most likely returned son and his soon to be husband lol. People come from miles around to see her place and trick or treat there. And be scared the beejazus out of! It takes months of planning and they start over a month in advance to lay out the decorations and wiring. It’s’ clearly a joy for all involved. I’ll see if she posts a vid this year and bring it to you.

She’s not alone.

Halloween has become one of the most popular holidays in the U.S. We decorate our houses, planning way in advance, and we plan, and coordinate our costumes too. Parties galore happen all over the place, and streets like Georgetown flow with Ironman and Scarlet Witch, Thors and WonderWoman. You name it, the costume is there, and probably some you can’t. That’s great too. People feel free to express themselves, free their imaginations…sometimes it’s much easier to be yourself under a wig and behind a mask Took a turn there didn’t I?

The unexpected. That’s always to be found at Halloween as well. Never forget it’s origins. More on that to come next Sunday.

GETTING TO KNOW JO

How much of yourself goes into a character?

I don’t know how a writer could tell a story without putting a bit of him or herself in each character. We (writers readers, & editors) bring our own life experience to each story written or read. I try to make each character unique yet even when I base that character on someone I know, there is still a part of me in each one.

Have you ever had to put an ‘in progress’ story aside because of the emotional ties with it? You were hurting with the characters or didn’t know how to proceed?

All the time!! I am one of those who always have more than one story going at a time. Typically, I’ll have a happy, sad, angry ect story going and depending on my mood that day, it’s the story I am going to work on. (Another reason I suck at deadlines) If I’m happy, I’ll be telling a fun, light story, with ewwy gooey love. On the flip side, if I’m sad, the angst is flowing. Now, if I’m pissed off… yup everyone is going to die.

Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

I like them, but I don’t think a good story has to end in one. I’m more of the, you don’t get happy unless you deserve it. In my world if the guy Is an asshole, he doesn’t deserve HFN or HEA. For the really big jerks, it may take more than one book before he’s become worthy of the love.

Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

I never read fiction when I was a teenager, hell I didn’t read it most of my adult life either. I have always been a bit of a history buff and when I wasn’t reading about history, I was reading true crime. I am not embarrassed to admit that it was Twilight that brought me to reading fiction and ultimately to writing my first book. After watching that movie, I came home read the novels then moved on to the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I was literally reading novel a day to make up for all the years I missed. I no longer have much time to read but when I do get a chance, I cherish it.

How do you choose your covers? (curious on my part)

Do you have a favorite among your own stories? And why?

I surf the web. Sometimes I write a story based on a picture I see but most of the time, I have to go in search of photo. I have been blessed with finding the perfect photo and being given permission by the photographer to use it for my cover. Plan B, Quinn’s Need, Jess’s Journey, Tag Team and My Hometown are all examples of that. I have a hard time picking one as a favorite since I love them all for a different reason. However, if forced to choose one, I’d have to go with Ty’s Obsession since my son created that one for me ☺

Ever drunk written a chapter and then read it the next day and still been happy with it? Trust me there’s a whole world of us drunk writers dying to know.

You mean people actually write sober? Like my hero the late great Earnest Hemmingway, I write drunk and edit sober.

Just kidding hehehe I’ve only been drunk a couple of times while (tipsy doesn’t count) and I have no clue if EH wrote drunk either. You see, Hemmingway never said, “Write drunk, edit sober” The quote is all over the internet being attributed to EH, but no one ever gives a source in Hemingway’s works or conversations. It was the novelist Peter De Vries who said it. You go Pete!

Long Black Cadillac is…

I normally start my reviews stating what the story is, but in this case, I’m still not sure I know. It has a plot, somewhere. Nice characters? Perhaps. Sex? More than necessary. Within all the components, the author’s voice was lost. It became another element buried between the blood, sex, and gore.

It does have a lot of promise, but unfortunately, it was lost. This is the second edition, and I believe a missed opportunity. I wanted a reason behind the attraction, the partnerships, the adventure, and everything else. And in the end, all we get is a faint connection between a master and his creations.

If you are a B.A. Tortuga fan you will enjoy her style but this should not be the first read into this amazing western author.

The new cover by Alexandria Corza goes well with the story and adds to the cheeky feel of the story.

Andrew’s Top 5 Games

I thought instead of an ordinary guest post, that I’d do a top 5 list. Over the years I have played a number of games and I thought I’d give you a list of my favorites.

1) Trivial Pursuit – I used to play this all the time and in college beat most of my friends until they decided to memorize the cards.

2) Pictionary – My family used to play at the holidays. It was active and fun. I can’t draw for crap.

3) Pokemon Go – I have played this game for the last two years or so and it has given me hours of fun and gotten me out of the house.

4) Rollercoaster Tycoon – Oh, this was fun. It’s a computer game where you build and design amusement parks.

5) Dungeons and Dragons – A group of us played for a while in college. I think we ate and drank more than we actually played. But it was great fun.

Excerpt

“You will,” Todd told him after turning back to him. “What you have to do is give yourself some time. Everything got turned upside down by the accident, and you need to give yourself a chance to figure some shit out.” Another car was brought into the bay, this one being pushed by a couple of the guys. Todd sighed, and as soon as they stopped, he popped the hood and got to work. “What other things do you want to do besides fly down tubes of ice and snow at breakneck speed?”

Duncan tried to come up with an answer, but failed.

“What were your plans for that college degree of yours?”

Todd bent farther into the engine, his butt and legs visible. Granted, it was a handsome butt, with Todd’s work pants pulled tight over it. Duncan knew he shouldn’t be looking at his friend’s backside. Who he found attractive—or not, for that matter—was irrelevant. No one was going to look at him twice in the chair. Still, his gaze kept returning to the view in front of him, and heat spread to his groin. Not that anything there perked up or took notice. Things hadn’t been working down south lately… and that was another source of anxiety and, quite frankly, shame.

The doctors told him that things could improve for him as his injuries continued to heal. He had gotten some feeling back in his legs. When he touched them, it felt like they were miles away, but he could feel something. That had come back over time, so maybe his dick would too. That wasn’t as important to anyone but him. But if he could get a stiffy once again, he could feel a little more like himself… at least in some way.

“What is it?” Todd asked, and Duncan suddenly realized he’d sunk into himself and his emotions and fears had gotten the better of him again. To his horror, Todd grabbed a tissue from the box at the back of the bench. “Whatever is bothering you… it’s okay. This may look like a garage, but it’s also a safe place for everyone.” Todd handed him the tissue and squeezed his shoulder once again, his hand lingering for longer than was necessary.

“That seems strange,” Duncan commented. “Garages are usually temples of testosterone and bluster. At least that’s my experience.”

“We have our testosterone gods here. If you saw Trevor, you’d understand.” Todd grinned. “The first time I met him, I thought someone had given life to my fantasy man. The guy is hot as hell. But he only has eyes for James. Not that I was ever that interested… I guess.” Sometimes Todd could get a conversation off track faster than a world-class luge run.

Andrew grew up in western Michigan with a father who loved to tell stories and a mother who loved to read them. Since then he has lived throughout the country and traveled throughout the world. He has a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and works in information systems for a large corporation.

Andrew’s hobbies include collecting antiques, gardening, and leaving his dirty dishes anywhere but in the sink (particularly when writing) He considers himself blessed with an accepting family, fantastic friends, and the world’s most supportive and loving partner. Andrew currently lives in beautiful, historic Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

An Alisa Release Day Review: Heart Untouched (Hearts Entwined #3) by Andrew Grey

This was another nice story in the series, at first I wasn’t sure if it would be connected to be previous characters but I’m glad we get back to the auto shop and get to see Trevor, James, Brent and Scott again. Duncan has been in a cloud of self-pity ever since his accident, which is understandable when you lose something so big in your life. Todd helps him to break out of that cloud but they end up helping each other too.

Duncan doesn’t know what to do about this sudden attraction to Todd but doesn’t want to hold him back or be a burden either. Todd wants to show Duncan how special he really is and it doesn’t matter how broken he thinks he is. I hated that all the outside problems that they had were from someone being petty even if they seemed to pretty easily resolve the issue.

I liked seeing both of the characters’ points of view which helped to understand and connect more with them. Duncan requires a bit of patience to get through to him but once he found his happiness he wanted to hold onto it with both hands. Todd stands by and refuses to let Duncan try and push him away since he knows it’s all doubts in Duncan’s head. We hear a little bit about Dean still being around, so maybe he will come up in a future story but I would also love to see Clive find someone too.

Cover art by LC Chase is great and I love the visuals of the characters, I continue to love the style of the covers for this series.

For the Love of Luke is a story of love, and has been a work of love for me. Not just the wonderful heroes Rupert and Luke, but also the British locations they visit in the book.

One of them is Middle Claydon, a village in Buckinghamshire where Rupert’s parents live. The village actually exists and I live about fifteen miles away from this beautiful spot. It’s a very romantic area to go walking, and there are three other Claydon hamlets nearby; Botolph Claydon, East Claydon and Steeple Claydon.

As described in the book, Claydon House was the ancestral home of the Verney family since 1620.

In the nineteenth century, Florence Nightingale’s sister Parthenope married the then Lord Verney and lived here. And that’s why Florence Nightingale often stayed at Claydon House. She wrote her seminal book Notes on Nursing here. Historians say she preferred the company of women to men, but lived a chaste life. According to her own writings, there were three women she loved dearly in her life. In the nineteenth century, there was no understanding or belief that a woman could be a lesbian.

If you ever get to visit Buckinghamshire, go find this beautiful spot. The surrounding countryside is lush and green, and the pretty church of All Saints is in the grounds of Claydon House.

EXCERPT:

The leathers Rupert brought for Luke were a snug fit. They clung tight to almost every part of his body. Luke admired himself in the full-length mirror. He turned side on. They felt good. He had to admit it. They looked damn good. Tight, black leather jeans enhanced the bulk of his thighs and the narrowness of his waist. They sagged a bit in the ass, but Rupert explained that was necessary to allow Luke to sit comfortably on the motorbike. Luke turned up the collar of the black leather jacket and closed the zips on both sleeves. Kevlar protective panels in the back, sleeves, and shoulders of the jacket filled out the upper part of his torso, adding bulk to his hours of work in the gym. He crossed to the bed and sat to pull on the reinforced bike boots, fasten their zips and Velcro covers.

Luke smoothed his hands across the surface of the leather stretched tight across his thighs and grinned at a stirring in his groin. The sensation both surprised and pleased him. He stood, and the rigid shape of the boots forced him to lean forward, like a skier about to descend a black run. He attempted to stand straight, the upper part of his body compensating for the enforced bend in his knees. The jeans pulled tight against his crotch, and his cock rose to the stimulation of the leather hugging his body.

“Sexy man.” Rupert’s voice came from the doorway. Luke turned. Rupert wore a one-piece racing suit made of red leather. White leather panels stitched into it enhanced the shape of his torso and legs. He crossed the bedroom to stand behind Luke at the mirror and placed his hands on Luke’s thighs. “I’ve not worn those leathers for a long time.” He studied Luke’s reflection in the mirror with an admiring grin. “They fit you really well. How do they feel?”

Luke took Rupert’s hands in his and pulled them to wrap around his waist. “They’re making me horny,” replied Luke. “I was getting a hard-on just standing here, even before you came in.”

Rupert slipped his hand down and caressed the front of Luke’s leathers. “And now you’re rapidly outgrowing those jeans. By the second, it feels like.”

He placed both hands on Luke’s shoulders and pulled him gently forward. He bent his head and kissed the side of Luke’s neck, slowly and tenderly, his tongue warm and moist against Luke’s skin. “I want you right now, the way you look and feel,” breathed Rupert. “But we’ve got to get moving. It should take us only an hour and a half to get there. Come on.”
