A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review : Oz (Finding Home #1) by Lily Morton

Oz Gallagher is bored with his life and decides to leave London to take on a temp job in Cornwall as an estate manager. He has some experience and his degree in Art History should be invaluable but it’s not so much that he wants the job as that he wants out of London.

When he meets Silas, the earl who happens to be a veterinarian and is fully invested in getting the country estate he’s inherited out of debt, Oz is gobsmacked. Silas is nothing like he pictured and everything he’d want. Silas has all of Oz’s requisite kryptonite: a hairy chest on a guy who’s earnest and adorable. When asked about running an estate, Oz quips that being house manager at Ashworth House will be “like being a tour manager, only with less drugs and hookers,” and that’s when I knew I was in for a treat.

Oz figures it will be easy to keep his distance from the cute earl because they are from two different worlds but the men are drawn to one another and quickly become friends and companions—long before they become lovers.

In the future if someone asks me for the perfect example of a slow burn romance that has all the elements of humor, snark, sweetness, and incredible characterization, I’m going to suggest Oz.

One of my favorite moments in the story occurs in their tour of the neighboring estate—their competition, so to speak. Oz’s humorous quips and Silas’s reactions were delightfully funny.

The author’s ability to show the depth of emotion the men develop for one another is outstanding. Describing Oz at one point in the story, Silas says: “My Oz is like a hedgehog. Bright eyes, prickly and fierce on the outside with a soft underbelly that he’ll roll into a ball to hide.”

And Oz, speaking of falling for Silas: “I’d thought the moment when I fell in love would be dramatic and full of noise and energy. Instead, it’s in a quiet bedroom where a soft song plays and the light dances on the man’s hair and the planes of his face as he makes me back into me. The only man who’s ever valued that person.”

I’m deeply in love with both Silas and Oz. There’s not much more I can say than that. I invite all my fellow MM romance lovers to share this beautiful love story with me. It’s absolutely amazing!

Ty helped Jax into the boat, and once they were seated, Cal joined them and rowed them out to the middle of the lake.

“Privacy at last,” Cal said as he pulled in the oars. “Though you could have picked somewhere away from the water.”

Ty snorted. “And have Lyndon lingering around?”

“Perhaps not.”

Jax frowned. “Are you saying you deliberately ditched Lyndon?”

“We are,” Cal confirmed. “We wanted to talk to you privately.”

“You did?”

“Yes,” Ty said.

“What about? It’s my uncle you’d need to speak to if you wanted to claim me as your mate.”

Ty gave another snort, this one even louder than the first. “Don’t you get a say in the matter?”

Jax trailed his fingers in the water. “Not really.”

“Why not? It’s your life?” Cal said.

Jax sighed, but didn’t say anything. It hadn’t been his life for a long time, but how could these two felines possibly understand that?

Ty took hold of Jax’s hand and gave it a squeeze. “Jax, we know you’re in some kind of trouble, but we can’t help you if we don’t know what the problem is?”

Jax finally looked at Ty and saw nothing but compassion in his amber eyes. “You should choose another mate, not me,” he whispered.

Cal slowly inched over from his seat and sat at Jax’s feet. “Ty will choose whoever he wants. Take it from someone who knows. Now, why don’t you tell us what the issue is with Lyndon?”

“There is no issue.”

“I disagree,” Cal argued. “I saw him fucking you in the garden earlier. Does your uncle know you’re not a virgin?”

The world swayed around him and Jax thought he might throw up. Then a strong arm wrapped around his shoulders, and he leaned into Ty, the strong steady heartbeat of the feline next to him helping to keep him calm.

“Yes, my uncle knows,” he whispered. “But he doesn’t know Lyndon is the one who has fucked me.”

“He doesn’t?” Cal asked.

Jax shook his head and toyed with the hem of his kilt. He shivered, even though he had put on his warmer cloak before they’d begun their walk. His uncle did know about Lyndon. He just refused to believe it.

“Tell us what happened,” Ty encouraged. “We want to help you.”

“Why?” Jax asked. “You don’t know me. I’m just a stranger who’s been paraded in front of you because I happen to have both female and male genitals.”

Cal took his hand and gave it a quick squeeze. “Because what I saw in your face when Lyndon walked away this afternoon was not the face of a feline in love with his devoted servant.”

Jax gave a bitter laugh that he quickly tried to suppress. “I haven’t been in love with Lyndon for a long time, if I ever was.”

“Your uncle seems to think a lot of him,” Ty commented.

“That’s because he doesn’t know the real Lyndon,” Jax replied. “If he knew what he was really like… oh, who am I fooling? He’ll never believe a bad word about him.”

“Why not?” Cal asked.

“Because Lyndon is my uncle’s primary food source, too,” Jax said.

“That’s no reason to believe him over his own nephew.”

Jax shrugged. “He won’t hear a thing said against him. Believe me, I learned that lesson the hard way.”

“Talk to us,” Ty urged.

Jax could tell he wasn’t going to get off this boat until he told them what they wanted to know. Perhaps he could give them an edited version they would accept.

“The world is a cruel place…”

No one believes that more than I do. My name is Declan Forester, and I am a Zedian. Part of a different species born with miraculous gifts from the gods, only the humans don’t see it that way. They see us as something to be tamed.
After being captured by the humans and stripped of my abilities, I have little left. With my life in shambles, my thoughts are haunted by my human tormenter. Dr. Adam Davenport. A human male that is everything nightmares are made of.
Now, his unwilling captive in a government-run facility, I am forced to obey his every demand, or be punished. Caught up in a web of lies about gods, the push to help a hot redhead, my high running desires and, oh yeah, the pending apocalypse, I find myself falling apart. And Adam may be the only one to save me…if I comply.

Comply is a bit hard to rate, tbh. There were things I quite liked and things I didn’t care for, so I guess “not so great” is my final impression.

The premise itself is interesting, if not entirely unique. There are people (Zedians) who have amazing gifts and the humans hate and fear them because of those gifts. As the blurb implies, this is a very dark story and that’s something I generally like. And an MC trapped in a facility for inhumane experiments is just the kind of thing that sounds promising to me.

The prologue was the best part of the entire book. It starts off with a very strong Fantasy bang, but the rest of the book didn’t quite life up to that. The bits and pieces of Fantasy were definitely interesting, but too few and far between for me. Also, I found the world building to be a bit lacking. Again, there were bits and pieces, but I kind of missed the bigger picture.

My biggest issue, however, were the relationships in this book. There is no build-up to and suddenly there are very strong feelings involved. I kind of got the feeling that Declan’s feelings for Adam were a Stockholm Syndrome thing. Not very romantic, but understandable.

But what really baffled me were Adam’s feelings. I just didn’t get where they were coming from. I think the author did too good a job of making him seem like an evil jerk at the beginning and then he kind of got a complete change of personality, for no apparent reason. I was convinced Adam was just playing with Declan and that he would betray him eventually.

There weren’t many sex scenes and all but one wasn’t very consensual. And the one consensual scene we do get, was a bit odd. I could have forgiven the lack of condoms, given the circumstances and the fact that Declan isn’t human and has very strong healing abilities, but the lack of lube really put me off. And the time and place they chose to have sex wasn’t very nice either.

Honestly, this book left me confused. There were grammatical errors, which really bothered me, an inconsistent plot and the MCs had zero chemistry. There are a bunch of seemingly useless torture scenes and the relationship was very much dubcon. The idea itself was good and there were some elements I liked, but the ones I didn’t like far outweighed the good parts. I think it definitely shows that this is the author’s first book.

I actually quite like the cover by Jay Aheer, it’s nice and dark. Though I am a bit sick of all those ripped, bare-chested cover models…

Matt’s lips curled back, and a deep growl came out as he turned them around, pushing Xander against the wall. Claws bit into Xander’s chest as he pinned him. Matt reached back tapping the glass wall a couple of times without looking, music started playing. Xander smiled, putting a hand over the one Matt had on his chest. “You had this all planned out, didn’t you?”

Matt nodded slowly, seductively and kissed him fiercely, all tongue and fang. A deep vibration hit Xander’s chest as he grasped Matt by the hips, picking him up and flipping them around again to pin him to the wall with a thud.             

Matt grinned deviously as he reached up, grabbing a hold of the bar higher up on the wall pulling himself up and planting his legs on Xander’s shoulders. Xander growled at the sight of Matt’s arms and abdomen flexing. Xander looked hungrily at him as he grabbed his ass, holding him in place while he licked lightly at his heavy balls, taking them both in gently and sucking ever so lightly. Matt’s muscles flexed, his arms bulging and his abs tightening as he chuffed and moaned.

Xander’s tongue went lower, massaging his taint with each lick. Matt’s unique musk drove Xander’s need to plunge his tongue inside of him. Matt clenched around Xander’s tongue at the sudden invasion. Heath buys Adrien’s heat with only one motivation: to impregnate Adrien, claim the child, and move on. But their undeniable passion shocks him. Adrien doesn’t know what to make of the handsome, mysterious stranger he’s pledged his body to, but he’s soon swept away in the heat of the moment and surrenders to Heath entirely.

Once Adrien is pregnant, Heath secrets him away to his immense and secluded home. As the birth draws near, Heath grows to love Adrien for the man he is, not just for his connection to Nathan. Unaware of Heath’s past with his omega parent and coming to depend on him heart and soul, Adrien begins to fall as well.

But as their love blossoms, Nathan’s shadow looms. Can Heath keep his new love and the child they’ve made together once Adrien discovers his secrets?

Well, the blurb really tells most of the story but without the engaging dialogue and the characters’ personalities. This was very well-written and I really liked the omegaverse, the characters, and their story.

I thought it was going to be so erotic that the plot would be minimal, but that wasn’t the case. The author did a great job in building the characters, principally the MCs, Adrien and Heath, but also Heath’s deceased lover, Nathan, who was Adrien’s biological parent, unknown to Adrien throughout most of the book.

The plot wasn’t too complex or convoluted—everything was put out there for readers to see. Adrien being unaware of Heath’s attempt to replicate his dead lover formed the basis of the story, but the time the wealthy, powerful alpha, Heath, and the sweet, innocent, virgin omega, Adrien, spent together in the Heat Cabin brought about the beginning of change in Heath’s thinking and in his heart and then the time they spent in the “Nest” Heath created for his omega’s pregnancy needs sealed the deal.

Watching their emotional changes and the commitment Heath eventually made to Adrien was entertaining. Adrien’s emotions during his pregnancy and his hormone drop while chestfeeding their baby (I love that word!) and the slow evolution of Adrien’s knowledge about his dead omega father brought about major change and drama. I totally enjoyed everything about the story, including Heath getting his comeuppance for having been stupid enough to keep essential information from Adrien for so long.

And as I said, I knew going in that there would be a lot of sex, and it is plenty erotic, but I personally think Alpha Heat by Leta Blake—Blake Moreno’s alter ego—was much hotter, more erotic, and had a better story than this one. Just sayin’. But—and it’s a very big but—I will keep reading these stories if the author decides to do more—under either pseudonym. I enjoy both Blake’s and Leta’s writing style and though both omegaverse’s are different, they have enough in common to engage me in their world and keep me coming back.
