An Alisa Review: Loose Ends by Jeff Erno

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Homicide detective Tucker Brown hasn’t always made the right decisions, but one thing about his life he’ll never regret is his son Jaydin. While at the hospital for his four-year-old’s tonsillectomy, he encounters Jaydin’s nurse, Ivan Ramsey. Tucker is taken aback, however, when he discovers he’s been assigned to investigate the potential murder of Ivan’s mother.

Ivan Ramsey is a pediatric nurse, and he loves his job more than life. Raised in a devoutly religious family, he’s not yet out to a lot of people, but on the very night he chooses to come out to his mother, she dies tragically in a house fire. Devastated by the news, Ivan all but falls to pieces, and to make matters worse, a cocky, know-it-all police detective shows up asking nosy questions. The cop implies his mother’s death might not have been an accident and even infers a family member might be responsible.

Tucker and Ivan at first clash. Their strikingly different personalities are oil and water, but soon they begin to work together to determine the real cause of Ivan’s mother’s death. In the process, sparks begin to fly and a romance ignites. Ivan falls hard, not only for the sexy detective but also his adorable son.Tucker, equally smitten, has made some discoveries he can’t yet reveal to his lover. There are so many loose ends and unanswered questions for both of them, and when the truth finally comes out, it just might tear them apart.

This was a sweet story about family and love.  Ivan loves kids and working in the pediatrics unit in the hospital is the perfect place for him.  Tucker can’t help but think about his son’s nurse even though he knows he should keep his distance especially because of his job.

Ivan makes some assumptions about Tucker and his life that he soon learns are not quite valid.  Tucker is trying to solve the murder of Ivan’s mother and keep Ivan in his personal life.  Ivan needs something stable in his life when everything seems to go wrong at once and Tucker seems to be that person.

I felt so bad for Ivan when he got the news about his mother’s murderer and feeling what he portrayed as Tucker’s betrayal.  I loved that Tucker has an endless amount of patience with his son and with Ivan.  While I really liked the story the further I got into it the more name mix ups and misspellings that kept coming up and it unfortunately took away from my enjoyment of the story a bit.

Cover art by Louca Matheo is nice and gives nice visuals of Ivan, Tucker and Jaydin.

Only then did she become aware again of their surroundings. The motors hummed and vibrated through the small space, reminding her they were in the plane lavatory. She couldn’t help smiling to herself. Before Jie, something this wonderful, this erotic would never have happened to her.

Finally, when they were rested, they maneuvered in the tiny space, worked around each other to do up their clothing. Once dressed, Jie took her in his arms again and nuzzled her hair. “Now,” he said softly, “we should both try to get some sleep.” His hand slipped into her hair, cradling her head. “As soon as we get to the hotel and settle in, I have to contact Su Lin.”

Meg sighed. “I know.” She wished she could just enjoy the languorous aftermath of their lovemaking without the specter of meeting Jie’s ex-wife hovering. She was tempted to ask Jie to just let it go, not to bother defending himself. But she knew how guilty he felt and how important it was that he was cleared of Su Lin’s accusation.

She let her thoughts wander to the stranger whom Su Lin thought was Jie. A strange tingle shimmered down her spine. Who was this man who looked so much like Jie that Su Lin thought he was her ex-husband? As a woman, she felt she would know Jie anywhere, even if he’d changed physically and she hadn’t seen him in a long time. She had taken Jie into her body and heart. He was imprinted on her very soul, as no doubt, he was on Su Lin’s. That thought made jealousy simmer deep in her gut, relieved only by Jie’s tender adoration.

Jealousy aside, the truth remained. There was something strange going on—though it couldn’t possibly be more bizarre than the fact that the man she loved changed from a man into a wolf-like beast at every full moon. They would obviously have to see this mysterious stranger and Jie would need to identify him while they were in Beijing in order to prove to Su Lin and to the authorities that he had been in the United States at the time of the stranger’s arrest.

“What are you thinking, Meg?” Jie’s gentle tenor cut through her musings.

She looked at him. Guilt snaked through her for all her private thoughts. She searched her heart for the words she really wanted to say. Now was no time to express fear and jealousy. “I was thinking how much I want everything to work out.”

He rested his hands on her shoulders and nodded. “Me too,” he murmured.

Jie left the lavatory first and she followed him after washing her face and smoothing and repinning her mussed hair. Then she went out and took her seat next to Jie, trying to get some rest with her hand laced in his.

A PaulB Review: Surviving Elite High: The Next Generation (Surviving Elite High #4) by John H. Ames

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

surviving-elite-high-the-next-generationRobbie is a seventeen year old who has been in the Home of Good Deeds orphanage for the past ten years.  In those ten years, he has seen many kids adopted out but he has still remained.  He can’t really understand why.  Ever since the accident that took his parents life, he has suffered from amnesia of the event and all things before it.  But all the other children who have suffered similar fates seem to be the first ones to leave the orphanage.  Add in the fact he is gay and Robbie never believed this day would come.  The day he left the orphanage and was adopted.

His new parents are Nick Hawking and John Ames.  These men, who were the center of the original books in this series, have had their difficulties also.  But most of those are problems are in the past.  They have two children, Lily and Nicky who will become Robbie’s sister and brother.  Nick has served two terms as the openly bisexual governor of New Jersey and runs the Hawking-Ames charities.  They want to give Robbie a place in their home.

What follows is your typical teenage drama of living life and going to high school.  Robbie is smitten by his new brother Nicky but realizes that Nicky is as straight as an arrow.  Besides, Nicky is now his brother and how creepy would that be?  Robbie is introduced to the extended family, most of who will be in Elite High School with him.  The one that captures Robbie’s attention is Tim, the high school quarterback.  Tim asks Robbie to go out shopping for his father’s birthday gift.  They go to the mall, have dinner and go shopping but only pick up things for Tim and Robbie.  When Robbie asks about the present Tim was going to by, Tim informs him that his dad enjoyed his gift three weeks ago.  While Robbie’s hopes for a relationship begin to develop in his head, his new friends inform him that Tim has a girlfriend whom none of them like.  Robbie is confused and disappointed but he has a new family and a new school to look forward to.  But he still cannot figure out what is going on with Tim.

The book takes the reader through Robbie’s first year at Elite High with his brother and new friends and especially Tim.  There are the usual teenage romances and rivalries that you find in high school.  But there are other issues as well.  Blackmail, sexting, teenage drinking and depression are dealt with in this book.  Then there is the little matter of the man with the white beard that keeps invading Robbie’s mind during times of stress.   Is this man real or just a figment of Robbie’s imagination and why does he want to kill Robbie?  I’m sure the answers to these questions will be resolved in further books in the series.  I look forward to reading them.

The cover art by Louca Matheo is stark with a black cover and head shots of Robbie and Tim underneath the title.  It is a decent cover for the book but I wish there was something more to it that just the head shots.

It’s been a long shift for Detective Vincent Pasquale. Back at his desk at the station he finds a phone message from his vampire spouse, Mark, waiting for him.

“Hi. I figured calling your station phone number was more secure than using a cell. Listen our friend Dexter found something about who may have tried to frame Jean-Claude. Turns out that there is a lot more to this thing! It’s big. Jean-Claude and Jaime are meeting me here before we all head over to see Tortego at his offices. We should be there in a half hour and we figure this meeting will run most of the day. If you can join us fine but if not I’ll tell you about it later after your shift is over. Call me.”

A few moments later a report comes into the station about a possible terrorist bomb explosion at a Midtown office building. No survivors are reported. To his horror Vinnie realizes the bombsite’s address is the exact location of Tortego’s offices. In a panic Vinnie rushes to the scene where, out of nowhere, he is shot from behind by an unknown assailant. Its’ four funerals and a wedding, as the newest Julian book unfolds.

Vinnie was still trying to make sense of what he had just heard when suddenly a loud commotion erupted in the outer room of the police station. Everyone in the squad turned their heads to see a young police rookie burst into the room. “A bomb just went off by Saint Pat’s,” the shaken young Latino officer hurriedly blurted out. “The blast took out at least one building! There are injuries and maybe worse.”

There was silent for a few seconds before a multitude of voices broke out asking questions of the rookie. Some of the older detectives grabbed their jackets just as their Captain quickly strode into the room to speak to everyone in the squad room. All talking ceased as the men and women in the room paused to stare at their boss. “We don’t know if it’s terrorists but everyone should understand that right now we are in code red,” he calmly said. “We’ve drilled for this since 9/11. You all know what to do and what our city and I both expect from every person here. Get to your assigned posts now!” Within seconds, people were quickly scrambling to obey.

As the news of where the explosion fully sunk into his mind a terrifying thought took hold of Vinnie. “Captain, what buildings!” he yelled out amid the squad room’s commotion. “What building went up?”

The Captain looked at a paper and gave out the address. When Vinnie heard it he sat down in his chair. That’s where Tortego’s office is located, his mind screamed as he ran his hand through his dark curls in horror. Sweet Christ in heaven, Mark, Jaime, and Jean-Claude are there with him! The frantic detective quickly got up and ran to his Captain. “I need to go to that explosion site, sir,” he said while trying to stay calm.

AUTHOR: John H. Ames

RELEASE DATE: March 31, 2016

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Love, Joy, Heartache and Pain!

Love, Joy Heartache and Pain is my latest work of fiction under my pen name, John H. Ames. There are a few little things behind this novel that you might find a little interesting and odd. I’ll be sharing ten of them with you today in hopes that I might keep you entertained and distracted for a few minutes. So? Are you guys ready? Okay, here we go!

  • Love, Joy, Heartache and Pain is a collection of three short stories that when combined act as a full-length novel. However, I can safely say that each story can stand on their own. You don’t have to read all three. You can only read one or two. You can read them in any order and whenever you want.
  • Each story stars a different couple. You won’t see the same couple in all three stories. You might learn what happened to them and what they are up to, but that will be it. This way each story can stand on its own and complement each other if you read all three.
  • Each story conveys a different emotion that I was going through when I wrote them. Once you read all three stories, you’ll see that I’m a very emotional individual. When I wrote these stories, I was in a very emotional place. Reviews from my first novel dropped and readers bashed it left and right. It really hurt my feelings and the only way to release all that anger and frustration was by writing it down. And let me tell you, the finish result was amazing! I love these short stories. They might not be perfect, but they’re mine and they’re my babies.
  • Each story is dedicated to a special someone. I wanted to thank everyone that has been with me since day one or inspired me in one way or the other. From my fans to my haters, I thanked them all with a short and sweet dedication.
  • The first story channels a little Freaky Friday. I’m a huge movie lover. When I’m not writing, reading, or working, I’m definitely seeing an old movie or the latest one. I can definitely say that the first story was inspired a little by Freaky Friday. Yes, a little. Not a lot since they’re huge differences between the two. I simply borrowed ‘the switching of bodies’ idea and added a lot of more twisted turns. If you read a little closer, there’s a huge A Cinderella Story reference in the first story as well. I won’t tell you where, you just have to read it.
  • Nick and John, from Surviving Elite High, are mentioned in one of the stories. I know lots of you are a Nick and John fan. So I wanted to give you a small preview about my favorite couple in the world. Pretty soon you’ll be able to know what happened to them after graduating from Elite High in Surviving Elite High: The Next Generation.
  • Each story has its very own theme song. I decided to pick a theme song for each one. Do you guys want to know what they are? Fine! You pressured me into telling you. The three songs are: Quando, Quando, Quando by Michael Buble, Spirit Indestructible by Nelly Furtado, and Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) by Marilyn Manson. I think each song tells a lot about each story. Look at these three songs like a soundtrack to Love, Joy, Heartache and Pain.
  • The second story is based on an urban legend. We’ve all heard the legend of the Vanishing Hitchhiker. This is the urban legend in where people traveling by car meet a hitchhiker that subsequently vanishes without explanation from their moving vehicle. This urban legend is so popular worldwide that it immediately caught my attention. I was fascinated by it and decided to write my very own version with a very cool and unexpected plot. I really hope you enjoy it because, out of all three, the second story is my favorite one.
  • The last story can be a little controversial since it’s very special in many ways. The Lake View Psychopath can be a little gory and the ending might shock you. Many who have read it have asked me the same question over and over again. Was it all a dream? Did it really happened? Read it and you tell me. The ending is not ambiguous at all. If you look at it closely, you’ll see the answer staring you in the face.
  • I’m seriously thinking about writing another set of three unique short stories similar to Love, Joy, Heartache and Pain. Depending on how well this novel is received, I might pen down a second part to Love, Joy, Heartache and Pain with three different couples and three different stories.

There you go guys! I really hope you enjoyed reading these ten little things. I definitely loved writing them and sharing them with you. These small little things show you that authors don’t simply sit down and write down anything that comes into their minds. Everything is well planned out and calculated. You guys want to stalk me? Look me up at or email me at See you soon!

BLURB: A collection of new entwined stories by best-selling Young Adult author, John H. Ames. Love that reaches beyond the boundaries of the physical realm…

The not so unrealistic detailed account of how my best friend and I swapped bodies for a short period of time. -High school is one of the most excruciating and painful periods of any teenager’s life. To Kyle, it’s hell on earth. Being the target of the jocks made him hate high school more than anything in the world. All he has is his best friend and the center of the jock’s interest, the beautiful Kylie Bursnell. But Kylie is not your typical beauty. She hates the jocks even more than Kyle, especially Lucas Edward Johnson, a jock who is madly in love with her and Kyle’s forbidden dream. After a bizarre and freaky night, they swap bodies and are force to live each other’s live. Can this actually be true? Has Kyle’s dream come true? Will he be able to love Lucas Edward Johnson unconditionally until the end of time? Or is their love nothing but a beautiful dream enveloped in heartache and pain?

The Spirit Indestructible

Brandon Angelo William has it all. He’s hot, popular, shy, humble, and one of the typical and regular guys in high school. But, unbeknownst to everyone, he’s a closeted gay teen who came out to his parents the previous year. They loved and accepted him with open arms so what more could Brandon want? Love. The one thing that his soul and body need. After a late night out with his best friend, Kevin, Brad sees one of the most beautiful guys he has ever laid eyes on. But could the teen in front of him be real? Or is he the legendary hitching ghost that everyone talks about? Brad needs to find out and what he discovers shocks him and changes his young life forever…

The Lake View Psychopath

Jocks beware, he’s here and he’s not scared. Ashton Hall hates his existence at Lake View High. The jocks have made his life a living hell and his friends have completely turned their backs on him. Why? For being gay and dating the love of his life, Austin Young. Almost overnight, they became the center of every joke and every bully’s paradise. To make matters worse, even the school’s coach allows his ‘jock superstars’ to make fun of them.

But everything the night Austin Young is brutally murdered by the jocks and they walk free. Something snaps inside Ashton’s head and the only think he can think of is revenge. Will Ashton come to his sense and let Austin go? Or will he become one of the greatest serial killers of all time?

And there I stood, at the entrance of the school, wishing I were anywhere else but in this goddamn rat hole of hypocrites, liars and backstabbers.

“Move it loser!” Andrew shouted, knocking me to the side.

And then there was Andrew Cooper. He and a couple of his jock friends laughed and teased me as they walked inside the building. Andrew Cooper, the asshole jock, was the main reason why I hated my life at Gelson High. I couldn’t wait for graduation at the end of the year, so he could kiss my white ass goodbye once and for all. I loathed that pathetic little loser with all my heart, body and soul.

“Take comfort in the fact that this is his fifth year here.” A voice behind me caused me to immediately turn around.

And there she was, Kylie Bursnell, in all her glory. Now, since she is my best friend, me, a geeky little loser who’s afraid of a big, muscular jock, many of you may think that might make Kylie either a nerd or a reject from hell. Well, that isn’t the case at all. In fact, Kylie is one of the cheerleaders on the Gelson High cheerleading squad. The girl is a freaking bombshell! Every guy wants her, except for my other best friend, Josh, the rebel of our senior class. That’s the clichéd part of this story. For some reason, he doesn’t like her, or they just don’t click. You may be wondering why a girl like her would even be friends with a loser like me since cheerleaders are mostly shallow, arrogant and mean. Well, she’s not the typical cheerleader, that’s for sure. She is real and down to earth, just like me.

A MelanieM Review: Acts of Passion: A Jack Cade/Michael di Santo Novel of Suspense by Sedonia Guillone

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Acts of PassionWhen a man is found in his apartment, appearing to have committed hara kiri with a samurai sword, Boston Homicide Detective Jack Cade suspects more is going on than what it appears. The department’s criminal profiler has left and a new guy is taking his place. At first, Cade is skeptical of Dr. Michael Di Santo. Di Santo seems so absent-minded and too neurotic to be effective. But he is brilliant and hot and Cade finds himself falling hard and fast, both in lust and in love. The attraction is mutual, although Michael’s past demons haunt him, keeping him from getting too close. Together, they begin to unravel Michael’s emotional knots even as they close in on a killer, another brilliant, wily person whose sights are now set on Michael.

Acts of Passion by Sedonia Guillone is a novel that picks up the story of a secondary character from a previous series, Genjin/Holmes Mysteries. As Sedonia Guillone has said, she thought Michael Di Santo deserved his own HEA and gave it to him here in Acts of Passion, a layered story full of romance as well as mystery and suspense.

One element of every story and series Sedonia Guillone writes is the wounded warrior or modern samurai, and the author plays on that theme here with several devilish twists, always with a nuanced overlay of Japanese culture and samurai weaponry involved.   Do I love that about her writing?  Absolutely.  Her knowledge is impeccable, and she is able to impart that passion and love to the reader without it being a dry dump of facts.  Instead she folds it into her characters and their history beautifully, revealing itself as it should throughout the storyline.

You don’t have to have read the other series, this story works perfectly as a standalone.  Guillone supplies the back-history for Michael’s previous relationship with Toshi (the ex partner back in Japan) and for Jack Cade, the man who will capture his interest personally and at work.  I loved the interchanges between the characters, it works on every level to pull them together professionally and as men becoming interested romantically.  You will get it too because Jack Cade is such an intriguing character with his own  demons pulling at him as well.  The two men have many obstacles, not the least of which is a serial killer, to overcome, before they can more on with each other.

I thought the mystery was good (although I had guessed correctly at who the killer was) but the suspense?  Excellent.  This was seat of the pants, white knuckle grip, will they get there in time stuff.  And I love every bit of it.

I only wish the ending was stretched out a bit longer for my tastes, that would have made this perfect.

Is Sedonia Guillone a new author for you?  Grab this up and start reading?  Have a love of the Japanese culture and the samurai warrior in modern times?  Love a good thriller with a romance thrown in?  This has it all.  Then go search out her other stories.  I’ve included a link to her website below as well.  Happy reading!  I highly recommend this author and story to one and all.

Cover art by: Louca Matheo.  The cover is sexy and works well for the storyline.
