LA Bryce on a Mother’s love for Romance Books, and her new release ‘Love, Trust and Secrets’ by LA Bryce (giveaway)

My Secret Is Out. I’m Not Half As Good as My Mom Was.

My first taste of Romance was my mother’s Romance book collection. She had five boxes (the kind that held 30 dozen eggs each) filled with books, all Romance, most by Barbara Cartland.

When I was 11 year’s old, my girlfriend’s Girl Scout troop held a yard sale. I’d decided the perfect items for me to contribute were the boxes of books in the spare room that no one ever read. And of course, why would I ask if it was okay for me to take them? Remember, no one read them anyway.

So with my friend and her mom’s help, I’d dragged them to the bank parking lot where the sale was held and proceeded to sell each book for $.05. Needless to say, the books were the quickest selling items that day. And when my mother showed up a few hours later, everyone excitedly shared with her the news of how well her books had sold.

Now a little backstory…my mom was AWESOME—the type of woman who would go with the flow. She just wanted to make those around her happy, even if it sacrificed some of her own happiness. One example was when the four kids (my sister, two brothers, and me) all went to our in-law’s for Thanksgiving (or pretty much any holiday) instead of staying home with her. Instead of guilting us into coming to her, or making us feel bad we didn’t, she would make a Thanksgiving feast a week earlier so we could all celebrate together.

Flashback to the sale…it wasn’t what she’d said or even that she’d done anything when she heard her books were gone. It had been more of just an eye twitch. But I’d known immediately something was very wrong. There was an electricity in the air. Like the coming of a Tornado. But being the person she was, she hadn’t created a scene or gotten angry and walked away. Instead, she said she was glad she was able to help contribute something that brought the much-needed money to the troop. Then even on the way home, instead of yelling or threatening to take something of mine that I loved, she asked why I had taken the books. I explained that I just wanted to bring something to the sale. When I’d finished, she’d calmly told me to make sure that if I wanted to take something next time to please be sure to ask first.

It was about twenty years after that I’d realized my mother should have been nominated for sainthood. It’d taken me that long to truly understand what I’d done. I had taken my mom’s ability of a break from taking care of the kids and my dad. I had taken her chance to see faraway lands without leaving the house. I had taken her way of getting a little happily ever after, whenever she’d felt she’d needed it. And all I can say now is I wish I could be even half as good of a mother as she was, because I know in no uncertain terms, if my kids ever touched even one of my books, there would be yelling, punishment, and possibly even some bloodshed.

If my mom were still alive today, I’d say, “Mom, I love you, and I’m genuinely sorry.”

For a man on the run, is finding love a good enough reason to stay? And for a man who doesn’t want to leave, is a secret enough reason to walk away?

Even though a bad situation brings Tyler and Jarod together, they quickly find the good in their relationship. But when Tyler falls in love and finds the feelings returned, he’s forced to question if his and Jarod’s relationship is worth risking his freedom, his life, and their hearts.

Jarod knows Tyler is hiding something, but his fear of scaring Tyler away has him accepting Tyler’s silence. But instead of keeping Tyler close, Jarod’s avoidance ultimately leads to Tyler being taken away, leaving Jarod clueless and unable to help the man he loves.

Love, Trust, and Secrets is a story whose main focus is the love between two men and all the trial and tribulations that come with that love.

About The Author

I’ve been telling stories for as long as I can remember; my parents tell me it’s been going on even further back than that and not always at the appropriate times. Now I choose to use my gift for good.
I enjoy meeting new people, even if they’re only in my head.

I believe love comes in all different packages and each should be wrapped in a ribbon and cherished.

I’m currently working on a contemporary romance with a splash of suspense. I get a thrill coming up with unexpected and usually dangerous situations for my characters to be in and then thinking of extraordinary ways for them to escape with outcomes that deviate from the expected.

I live with my family in the Northeast where we enjoy white winters, balmy summers, a spring flurried with fragrant flowers, and a fall filled with piles of leaves to dive in to. Our small town offers the old world charm of knowing your neighbor and its location enables us to take off for dinner in a city known for its beautiful skyline or to an afternoon playing in the sand of some of the best beaches found in the United States.

For me, writing is relaxation for the soul and reading is its nourishment.

An hour or so later, the door slammed, and there was Jamie. He looked tired. His tie was loosened, and the top button of his white shirt undone. Rain curled the ends of his dark hair. They’d been living together for two months now, and it still made Ryan’s chest feel all achy when Jamie came home from work and smiled as though he was happy just to see him.

Jamie shrugged wearily out of his jacket and hung it up, then, when he spotted Ryan, his face just lit. Just as it always did. “Hey, you.”

Jamie held out his arms, and Ryan walked into them. They held each other tight, and Ryan kissed Jamie’s jaw. He was shorter than Jamie, skinnier, so he fit perfectly into his arms. He gave the best hugs. Hard, but warm and safe. All the craziness melted away when Jamie held him. Maybe things weren’t as bad as he thought.

“I’ve planned dinner,” he said, kissing him again.

Jamie nuzzled his neck and made a soft humming sound. “What’s for dessert?”

Ryan pulled back and smiled up at him. “Wait and see.” He gave him a suggestive wink, patted his backside, and set off for the kitchen with a swish. He glanced back to see Jamie checking his phone. When he noticed Ryan watching, he slid it into his pocket.

“Who was that?” Ryan tried to keep his voice normal. He opened the fridge door and concentrated on pulling salad things out rather than look at him.

“No one.”

Ryan’s chest hurt. He paused and closed his eyes for a second before speaking again. Making sure his voice was even.

“Do you want to shower before dinner?” he organised the food on the counter.

“Yeah. Why not.” Jamie stood behind Ryan, pulled down the neck of his T-shirt, and nibbled the nape of his neck sending shivers all over him as always. “Won’t be long.” He squeezed Ryan’s arse cheek and headed for the bathroom.

Ryan tapped the cucumber against his lips for a moment, they shoved all the salad stuff back in the fridge.

He gave Ryan chance to get into the shower, then ran up to the bedroom, stripped off, and followed him. The shower had been Jamie’s idea. A walk-in affair, definitely big enough for two. He watched Ryan. He was so beautiful it was hard to breathe. He had his back to him as he rubbed soapy bubbles over his chest, under his arms, around his neck. Muscles rippled across his back, and his backside clenched when he soaped further south. Ryan’s mouth went dry.

My name is Ruby Moone and I love books. All kinds of books. My weakness is for romance, and that can be any kind, but I am particularly fond of historical and paranormal. I decided to write gay romance after reading some fantastic books and falling in love with the genre, so am really thrilled to have my work published here. The day job takes up a lot of my time, but every other spare moment finds me writing or reading. I live in the north west of England with my husband who thinks that I live in two worlds. The real world and in the world in my head…he probably has a point!

A Lucy Prerelease Review: Eyeliner and Lace by Ruby Moone

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

The day Ryan Fulton realizes he’s in love with Jamie Holt is the day he knows he’s losing him. With blue-tinted white blond hair, eyeliner, and a personality to match, Ryan knows he’s a bit much. But can he change? Can he tone it down and, if he does, can he live like that? He’d never suspect Jamie of cheating, but maybe his closeted boyfriend decided flamboyant Ryan wasn’t worth the effort.

But Ryan isn’t going to take it lying down. Determined to win Jamie back, Ryan even decides to get rid of the black and blue lace undies he just bought.

Then Jamie comes home and says they need to talk.

This is a short story (211 locations on Kindle) detailing a scary moment for Ryan in his relationship with Jamie.  Jamie is the epitome of professional and, in Ryan’s words, “Jamie was all but in the closet, Ryan was…out there.”  Jamie wears suits, Ryan wears tight pants, eyeliner and dyes his hair white and blue.  They live together and are happy.  At least Ryan thought so until Jamie starts to act suspicious.  Text messages and calls from “no one”; leaving home or coming home late with no real explanation of where he’s been, changing passwords and general evasiveness.  Ryan knows he can be “a bit much” and wants to tone it down, do whatever he can to keep Jamie.  Or, woo him back.  “Woo him…” Aiden’s face was a picture.  “What are you? Some kind of fricking Victorian mill owner?”  Aiden is Ryan’s best friend and he’s lovely.  He’s also convinced Ryan has lost his mind about Jamie, as he knows Jamie adores Ryan.  But the evidence is against him.

Because the story is so short, this is really just a scene from their lives.  I thought it was well written and the misunderstanding completely understandable.  I would have loved more, because I wanted to know – how did they meet? What did Jamie’s family think of Ryan? Why is Jamie closeted?  Their history and backstory, because I liked them very much.

It is a cute, sweet short for a super quick read.

The cover is the generic JMS cover for the recent shorts so really has no connection to this book.

A Chaos Moondrawn Review: Fire on Ice by Deirdre O’Dare

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Bard has been the Captain of the Unit for the last two years. Gordon has become his de facto second in command, even though there seems to be no such designation in this military. The Universal Council is constantly conquering other worlds for their galaxy spanning empire. With the men on an ice planet where electro-magnetic-based technology doesn’t work, one has to wonder why they even care about taking this planet inhabited by an insectiod population with primitive weapons.

This is a short read about two military men who have feelings for each other, but neither knows until one of them is injured. The reader gets both points of view, glimpsing their respect and longing for each other. While there seem to be no regulations against fraternization, anyone caught doing it disappears. In fact, none of the men seem to be allowed to be friends. They are not encouraged to forge ties, making their whole service seem senseless. I have decided to give the author the benefit of the doubt that this was the point of the story–endless war is pointless and institutionalization is demoralizing. There were two love scenes, neither of which were particularly sexy or emotionally moving. I think this is because the reader doesn’t get to see their two years serving together. There is only a sentence that even alludes to Bard showing an interest in Gordon as a person with small kindnesses. A short story can be captivating and pack an emotional wallop–so it’s not the length I am critiquing, just the execution.

The cover design was done by Written Ink Designs. I think it is actually very fitting, showing the only love and color in their lives happened in that tent. It’s the start of a new dawn for them.

A death that wasn’t what it seemed…
A kidnapping that isn’t what it seems…
Time is running out.

The morning after his wedding night, Prince Marcelo thought he’d be embarking on a journey to his own personal fairytale happily ever after with his husband, Efren, the crown prince of Zioneven. But when news arrives indicating his sister’s death wasn’t as accidental as previously thought, that journey becomes fraught with danger.

Enmeshed in political intrigue, death, and a kidnapping that might not be what it seems, will Efren untangle the web of misleading clues in time to save the naïve young man he’s already come to admire, or will Marcelo dig deep to discover a previously untapped inner strength and determination to facilitate his own survival?

Excerpt

Chapter 3: …Oft Go Awry

Efren

Efren blinked rapidly as he came awake with a start. He stared into the darkness and mentally shook the cobwebs from his mind. What had awoken him? Marcelo lay softly breathing in his arms, as relaxed and peaceful as only the innocent can truly be.

Around him, the night was silent. Too silent? He strained to hear the patrols rustling through the grasses, or the faint trills of their signals to each other.

A breeze swirled through the branches of the trees in the distance, rippling the leaves. Crickets chirped, apparently unconcerned about whatever either was or wasn’t going on in the meadow.

And footsteps. Quiet, approaching footsteps. It must be time for the shift change. That’s what had awoken him. Efren relaxed and nestled Marcelo tighter against him. One at a time, the guards would come in and wake their replacements.

Except—Efren tensed, then maneuvered his arm out from under Marcelo’s head and eased himself from under the blankets—the footsteps, furtively stopping and restarting, were approaching from multiple directions.

Efren shivered as goosebumps rose on his naked skin in the chilled night air and soundlessly slipped his broadsword and knife from their leather scabbard. He glanced at Marcelo, still sleeping, although less serenely with the sudden loss of the warm body next to him.

Guilt pinged his core as he shook off a strong desire to waken and forewarn Marcelo, but he pushed it down. Marcelo, completely untrained in warfare, would be safer in here. He seemed a heavy sleeper, likely incorporating outside noises into his dreams, unused to a need to be readily alert. He might even doze through the skirmish.

Or was that just wishful thinking? Because there’d be no hope that Marcelo could escape unseen, if it came to that.

Surely it would be better for such an innocent to be killed in his sleep, or with scarcely a brief moment of shock beforehand than to spend minutes quaking in terror, unable to defend himself.

Efren shook off his doubts and quickly pushed out the weighty flap, sword raised ready, and opened his mouth to yell an alert to awaken any of his warriors who hadn’t already sensed the looming danger, same as he had. But the breath he drew to strengthen his voice instead choked him.

He’d never before smelled these fumes, but the pungent, wet-dog odor had been described to him. The material of their tents was heavily treated to keep the toxin producing that odor from permeating the walls and closed flaps.

Icy apprehension slithered across Efren’s skin before settling in the pit of his gut. This was a completely unexpected development. The alchemists from the kingdom of Proye who’d developed this toxin—and unfailingly guarded the recipe—called it “Knockout.”

As Efren’s sword arm dropped, followed swiftly by his eyes rolling back in his head and his body slumping in a boneless crumple, a corner of his brain recognized how fittingly it was named, and hoped that enough of it had entered the tent through the briefly opened flap that Marcelo would succumb before Proye agents executed whatever they had planned. They’d been married for less than two days, and already he’d failed his innocent, young husband.

More on Universe Building and Differing Frameworks. This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

More on Universe Building and Differing Frameworks

More stories and more ideas on universe building and the size of the story.  From the tiny to the novella to the full sized novel that can be staggering in scope and size, universe/world building and its importance in the story has been of key interest to me.  As a reader, the world building, the layers, the richness, the imagination that an author pours into their universe for a story or series can enrapture me.  The details they think of, from the many cultures, languages, down to the clothing and food, pull me deeper into their novels and worlds, making it more real, more alive!

For some stories, it’s not just fantasy or science fiction that the author is building a specific universe for, sometimes it’s a contemporary one.  A certain location or family for example.  There it is still that same factors of language, geography, location, etc, that will hold true for fantasy and sci fi. Only whereas in fantasy and scifi you may be creating them, in contemporary they are there to be pulled from.

While I often think the heavier, longer tomes have it easier in world building because just in length alone, the author has the luxury of pages in which to take the time to include the world minutiae their imagination has created for their  characters and universe.  The problem here is often editing out the wealth of joyous overload the author has produced.  Building a complex universe takes a depth of knowledge and outlining, what to leave out is often as hard as what to put in.

But the other end of the spectrum?  The tiny story.  That itty bitty tale that dares you to put in any world building at all.

How to create a world on the top of a pin?  Or a story in 200 or 300 words?  One that feels so complete that you know the world those characters exist in.

Some authors can do it with just a few choice word placements.  Within a paragraph or page, a man mentions his sore throat, a constant illness, and a feeling settles over the story.  You don’t need to know about his viral loads to know he has AIDS, it has only taken some well chosen words and a location and the reader knows exactly who this man is and what he is going through. In a short story.

I so admire the high quality of writing of both authors that can build such stories, in tiny and huge, that have such ability to pull me in.

I figure that’s a lot of editing and heartbreak at work  in both forms in trying to know what to let go of…narratively speaking and what to hold on to.

But in both, for me at least, world building remains a key to unlocking the characters, their situations, and the storyline.  It’s the foundation it all rests upon, small or large.

Thoughts from H.B. on the matter:

I think it’s doable and can be well done using a few sentences or even a paragraph or two maybe a page or two. But I guess it depends on the writer but I don’t think authors have to limit themselves to that so I think it’s needless to think about?

As for small houses I know about them. She sheds have become popular of late and there are insurance commercials for it. I think All State actually did one a year or two ago? In china there’s are living quarters called microapartments where the rooms are only like 65-107 square ft or smaller (so enough for a bed and desk or just a bed).

We might come back to this topic and flash fiction later on.  As I said I love the subject.  Meanwhile, next week we go back to HEA or HFN which we never wrapped up.

Until then, happy Sunday, happy reading or listening.  And this is our upcoming week at our blog!

A MelanieM Review: Chicken Soup by Mel Bossa

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Though Jimmy’s ill and isn’t getting any better, he hopes to have a bit of fun during Pride weekend. When he meets Nolan, a young dancer in the parade, Jimmy takes a chance on making himself vulnerable for the first time in years.

What Jimmy doesn’t expect is how strong Nolan will make him feel with a simple gesture of support.

Note: This short story was originally published in the charity collection, Love Is Proud.

Chicken Soup by Mel Bossa demonstrates exactly how precisely a writer can build a tiny portrait of a man who has lost all hope of a future in every respect, despair and depression slowly weighing him down by his daily new illness and as the story eventually lets on, his  varying viral count.

While we don’t know specifics, we are lefts enough clues to put together a vague past history of a man soon to see his 40’s birthday, alone, even among his friends during Pride weekend.

Mel Bossa does a beautiful job with Jimmy and we feel his desolation of the spirit that suddenly lifts when he meets a 27 year old bank teller from Nova Scotia pursuing his dream of becoming a ballet dancer.  What follows is a sweet, tear inducing tale of recognition, connection, and of hope.

This is such a gem of a short story, certainly a HFN.   But its message is clear and life affirming, the characters well defined for such a brief story and the ending left me sniffling.  Yes, I certainly recommend this lovely story to everyone in need of an uplifting tale to read.

Cover art by Written Ink Designs:  I get that its branding a series of short stories but this shows its short failures.  It’s in no way appropriate for this story which is due something far better.

An Alisa Review: Unexpected Journey by JD Walker

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

John Dornbrook is forty-nine years old. He’s been doing the same job for fifteen years and hates it. But when he’s laid-off, it hits him hard and his world turns upside down. When he meets Hollis Lombard, his neighbor’s grandson, the unexpected happens.

Hollis Lombard is determined to get John out of his funk, so he offers to take him on a summer road trip. They head out west in search of adventure, but John is touchy and lashes out easily. Hollis, aware of the attraction between them, doesn’t want to take any chances which could hurt their budding friendship.

It’s all a frightful muddle, and it remains to be seen if they can overcome their issues in time to reach their final destination. Will the journey be worth it?

I was glad these two found what they wanted but I wasn’t a fan of how they came about it.  John’s life feels like it is in limbo after he loses his job and he doesn’t know what he wants to do next.  Hollis is getting ready to go to graduate school in the fall and invites John on his already planned road trip.

Umm, there wasn’t any connection to these characters and I kinda felt hum drum about the whole book.  It’s a bit crazy for Hollis to invite someone has only know for a few hours on this long trip with him and for John to so readily accept it.  I didn’t like how Hollis flirted but would pull back the instant John would show interest and how John tried to make Hollis jealous when he got tired of it, it just seemed very childish for both of them.

The cover art by Written Ink Designs gives a visual of the characters but just like the story didn’t really do anything for me.

Tiny Stories and Tiny Universes! This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Tiny Stories and Tiny Universes!

If you look at cable or even Amazon, you will see people consumed with the notion of tiny houses.  Amazon actually sold out of the tiny houses they sell online (yes, you can buy an entire tiny house for assembly at Amazon, several types actually) within hours! Some are looking to downsize their carbon footprint and go  small, others are obsessed with the technology and preciseness that goes into the tiny houses.  As I was watching and pondering life in one the other day, it sort of meshed together with thoughts I have been having about short stories and universe building.

My question …for myself and for all of you is…how much of universe building can you fit into a tiny story?

And how much is needed?

It’s like asking how much stuff do you really need inside a tiny house?  What’s actually necessary and what isn’t?

I’ve been reading a lot of short stories recently, fantasy and contemporary, many a part of a series.  And while the world building hasn’t been nearly as central to the contemporary series, in the fantasy stories in some cases, the authors have resorted to other options for their overall series world building.   The authors have zeroed in on creating an atmosphere and framework for that particular story but left the series foundation out in the individual shorts.  Same for the contemporary series.  They were all loosely connected, importantly so in some cases, but no one foundation novel for the entire series.  The reader sort of compiles it themselves, story by story, caching each tiny detail away to pull out as needed.

Just as spare it seems to me like living in a tiny house.  Only what is absolutely necessary, nothing extraneous.  Need something more?  Give directions and point them down the road…..Like to a Glossary that details everything. I have seen this used in more than one series and it’s absolutely a necessity to keep track of a series cultures, histories, religions etc, especially when the series is incredibly complex and layered.  So I am not decrying it’s use just hoping it’s not standing in for world building within the story completely.  Unless it has to be.  I think I’m flummoxed here.

Can you build a universe within a tiny story and does it need it?

And how much can you realistically do?

And consider this, some of the steps that might go into building your own fictional world:

  • Draw a map of your world
  • Make a history of your world
  • Include the flora and fauna for your world, what climates support them, complete natural history which will impact your other beings
  • Include your world’s background, (governments, politics, religion, cultures, infrastructures, etc.)
  • Create outlines for the above.

Whew!  Didn’t even through in mythology, my fav!  I can hear that tiny house screaming “get out, no room”! lol

I am dying to know everyone’s thoughts here.  Readers, authors, everyone, please chime in!  And tell me what you all think of tiny houses!  Did you know you could buy them on Amazon?  I hadn’t a clue! lol

Happy Sunday!  Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers out there!  Happy Reading and Listening!

And now to our week ahead!

A Lucy Review: Lyin’ Ryan by Kim Davis

Rating: 1.5 stars out of 5

When forty-year-old Chicago podiatrist Matthew Pepper is approached in a bar by college student Ryan Meade, he figures hooking up with the handsome twenty-one-year-old might be just what he needs to help him get over his recent breakup.

But the hookup doesn’t go as planned and Matthew writes the evening off as a failed one-night-stand. Ryan, however, views things differently. To him, a failed hookup is nothing more than an opportunity to try again.

Ryan pursues Matthew, not just because he wants to be with the man, but because he wants something … and he’s determined to get it. Will Matthew find out Ryan isn’t as transparent as he claims to be? Does Lyin’ Ryan live up to his nickname?

This review will be fairly short because I want to be respectful and yet this book worked on absolutely no level for me.  Told in first person, the book starts out with Matthew breaking up with his lover of two years, Donovan. Donovan loves Matthew but he’s spent most of his life in the closet and he just isn’t comfortable in his own skin.  “It looks….gay.”  This led to Matthew feeling he was the only one doing the work in the relationship and Donovan gets dumped.  I was sympathetic to him up to this point, which is unfortunately in the beginning.

Going out looking for a hook up, Matthew is pursued by Ryan, a younger man (21 to Matthew’s near 40), who seems nice and quiet, very into Matthew.  Of course Matthew brings him home, asks to see ID, then accuses him of being a prostitute.  “Wow, he said…I don’t think I’ve ever been accused of being underage and a trick in the same night.”  Matthew proceeds to go at it with Ryan, only to stop and treat Ryan poorly.  “ I wanted to ask if he’d been crying but I couldn’t bring myself to do it, mainly because I didn’t want to embarrass him but also because I didn’t want to hear the answer.”  Let’s mention, it’s Ryan’s birthday when Matthew does this.

And here the story loses me altogether. Ryan gets drunk that night and sends a ton of sexts, calls and messages to Matthew. Again, at first I was sympathetic to Ryan because he had just been rejected on his birthday.  Except the weird behavior continues to the point of harassment in a way.

Then we have Donovan, who loves Matthew and wants to get back together.  Matthew won’t give him a second chance, he is so sure that Donovan won’t change.

There comes the reason why Ryan is “lyin” and the whole thing just went off the rails for me. We do get to meet Ryan’s mother, Jennifer, who is pretty decent.  We get Matthew’s take on women – when he is jealous of Donovan’s friend, Nicole, it is noted, “I probably would have been able to accept her friendship with Donovan as just that: a friendship.  But the fact that she was good-looking made me wary.” Donovan has secrets, for sure, but I didn’t feel like everything was his fault.

I think we are supposed to feel sorry for Matthew and he was so unlikeable for me that I just wanted the book to be over. I struggled to finish it and ended up not liking anyone, other than maybe Jennifer.

Cover art, a male side torso with fingers crossed, is simple but fits.
