Sharing What We Are Thankful For In Books Month

It’s mid-November, plenty of time for reflection before the year is out.  I’ve been thinking about all the books I’ve read, the authors, the narrators and cover artists.  There is still weeks ahead for new writers, new stories, and new discoveries to arrive and make their impact on us before 2018 appears!  Such a grand time for looking back and to look forward.

I’ve been starting several series at the end and then scrambling to pick up the stories that came before.  Turns out that journey is one that agrees with me, something I’m grateful to find out about myself.  A sort of literary excavation that I enjoy, tumbling backwards to an origin of characters, couples, and even series arc.  It’s fun, informative, and often gives me insight into the author’s evolution as well as a writer.

This has  happened with J.M. Dabney, now Dahlia Donovan, and RJ Scott, to name a few.  Series are definitely my thing.  I love to sink into a group of stories with a single arc or connection between them.  This year saw several of my favorite series say goodbye (you never really know) with series finales.  I’m grateful for the wonderful way they went out.  More on those towards the end of the month.  Yes, my own list just keeps getting longer.

So for now, let’s hear from some of you….

♡From Ana:

Too Close by R. Phoenix (about domestic violence, really good one)
The Impossible Boy by Anna Martin
Diary of a Teenage Taxidermist by K.A. Merikan
Femme by Marshall Thornton (the audiobook)
Manic Pixie Dream Boy by K.A. Merikan (lovely characters)
Disease: When Life takes an Unexpected Turn by Hans M. Hirschi (this one made me cry like no book had ever done it)
Kill Game by Cordelia Kingsbridge
Off the Ice by Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn
Backdoor Politics by C.L. Mustafic
Greenwode by J. Tullos Hennig

♡From Didi:

This year has been a good one for me book-wise. Many of the titles I read agree with me, such LA Witt’s & Cari Z’s Bad Behavior series, Cordelia Kingsbridge’s Kill Game, Cat Sebastian’s The Ruin of A Rake, Neil S. Plakcy’s Angus Green series, Jordan L. Hawk’s Hexslayer, Avon Gale’s & Piper Vaughn’s Off the Ice and Permanent Ink, KJ Charles’ Spectred Isle, Astrid Amara’s Trustworthy, and those (only) to name a few. Not only that, I find awesome books with new-to-me authors like Tal Bauer, TA Moore, Layla Reyne, SA Stovall, Meghan Maslow, and Santino Hassell (I heard praises of their books before but just wasn’t convinced enough to give it a try. Then obviously smack my own head and muttered: how did I miss these for so long!! 😀). With less than two months left on 2017, I’m optimist there are still wonderful books for me to read. Fingers-crossed my good fortune (on reading) extends to next year! 🙂

♡From Jen:

I am thankful for the broad spectrum of sub-genres and diversity of characters.
that are available to read. I am also thankful for audiobooks. I really started listening to them more this year because my job moved my office and I have a long commute now. Audiobooks make it easier to get through.

What have you discovered or have found this year in books that you are

October is LGBT History Month. This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Standard

October is LGBT History Month

Before I get all into the meanings of All Hallows Eve and Samhain and all things coming up towards the end of October, I didn’t want the month to go by without recognizing that October is also LGBT History Month. As some of you may have noticed that National Coming Out Day was October 11, last week.  That was a date I let slip by and I meant to say something, especially as important as it is and with all the  incredible stories still pouring out from authors on this subject.  It doesn’t matter where on the LGBTQIA  spectrum or QUILTBAG as my friend  author J. Scott Coatsworth loves to call it, the bravery it takes to come out …to tell everyone who you are…is a warrior’s horn of courage.  Transgender, gay, lesbian, bisexual, ace, anywhere on the Quiltbag spectrum you may fall, to stand up and assert yourself, your right to love who you love, and who you are is a scary event.  Sometimes you find you have support, sometimes horrifically you find you do not.  LGBT Youth shelters are testament to that sad fact.

LGBT history is full of the courageous, those that have made their mark in pushing LGBTQIA rights forward and those that still continue to do so.  I’ve run across several articles each with differing opinions on who they think are the most influential LGBT historical figures.

Here’s the article from The Advocate. I also included the Huff Post’s Not sure I agree with all their choices. I guess my views tend more towards modern figures like Harvey Milk and Christine Jorgensen (yes they are there on the Advocate’s list). One’s that moved political rights forward, not influenced the world.  That latter is the view The Advocate took.  My list would include Harry Hay, co-founder of the Mattachine Society.  The Stonewall Rioters.  RuPaul.  Ellen DeGeneres. Barney Frank. Margarethe Cammermeye (a former colonel), George Takei.

Which is yours and who would be on your list?  Or should we even break the lists apart?

20 LGBT People Who Changed the World | Advocate.com

There are a number of marvelous books out there to read.  The history of Stonewall Riots is must reading for those interested in LGBT rights.  With the pressure from the current government to roll back rights, we should never forget it wasn’t that long ago when the frustrations boiled up and over.  Here’s two for your consideration:

Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked the Gay Revolution by David Carter

Stonewall By Martin Duberman

The second one I reviewed and taken together add a thoughtful, in-depth accounts at an historic moment in LGBT history.

So let’s celebrate LGBT History Month!  I’ve missed the chance to name some great LGBT historical novels but you can refer to our rec lists for a few.  Or leave a comment or two with some for everyone to enjoy.  I might just hand out a surprise or two.  Maybe list your choices for people you’d put on your LGBT list of Important LGBT People in History.

Our other contest will resume next week.

Now onto our week at the blog!

Mourning the Loss of Summer Doldrums. This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Standard

Mourning the Loss of Summer Doldrums

Ah, mid August.  Usually, that boring time of the month when the temperatures are heating up, vacations may be winding down, school is only weeks away…a time of calm, normally before things start up again.  The heat makes you slow down, the winds are becalmed, leaving ships drifting in the seas….

But all now seems in turmoil around us, I shy away from the news, the media (living in the Metro area makes this almost impossible) making want to cringe or more from what I hear being relayed daily.  Never did I think our country would come to this.  I admit to feeling incredibly disheartened these days.  Enough to long for those boring summer  doldrums of old.  And it wasn’t even that long ago that things seemed so promising.

Like the fresh start of summer every year.  Those days are always so full of promise, things we want to do in our time off, places to visit, things to accomplish maybe, or just relaxation, perhaps.  By mid-August, reality sets in as Autumn starts to peep around the corner, bringing another season, the arrival of Fall, and the closure of another summer.  Was it everything we hoped for?  Like a summer romance, it rarely is but the memories can remain golden if looked at in the right light.  So I’m wondering how we will remember this summer?  In what light, will we hold up these memories?  It’s too early to say.  I do know that now I’m looking forward to fall, to clear away the summer doldrums for the briskness of the fall air and the promise of a new clarity.  We can hope, can’t we?

In the meantime, Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words accumulations of lists go on!

We are still working on our Fantasy Rec lists.  You all know?  I forgot the Supernatural/Paranormal lists, so those may have to come next.  But for now, lets concentrate on the Fantasy ones.  Our Giveaway runs until August 26~

Of Recs Lists and Summer Reading

August is here and people are off on vacation or thinking off where to head off to for their summer getaways before the fall arrives.  And that means, packing books to take with you.  Whether it’s stacking your eReaders full of the latest in new arrivals or old favorites, or stashing away those treasured hardbound or paperbacks in your luggage or knapsacks, it’s time to look over lists and make some choices.  That’s what all these wonderful recs have been leading up to…books you haven’t read yet, might have overlooked, or just plain want to read again during your vacation (note to self, start rereading Megan Derr’s Lost Gods series again asap)!  I hope we can keep adding to these lists all year long.  Plus more lists to rec to come!

I still have books to rec rattling around my brain in both categories so don’t be surprised to see these lists popping back up. Ugh, I need to be more organized here and add as I read.  Like that’s going to happen….

However, we had so many wonderful lists and books rec’d to us that we are choosing a reader in each category to receive a gift card. Here are our randomly chosen winners from each category:

Winner of the Gift Card is:

  • Historical:  moondrawn (if moondrawn does not contact us within 5 days a new winner will be chosen)
  • Science Fiction:  H.B.

🎉 Will each winner please write to Stella at scatteredthoughtsandroguewords@gmail.com and she will handle giving your your gift card.  Thanks!🎉

Fantasy Fiction Recommendation Time – Recs Part III

Fantasy Fiction Rec Time!  I have to admit fantasy fiction is one of my favorite types of fiction to read.  It takes me away to other worlds, introduced me to Fae, trolls, dwarfs, dragons! I’ve set sail across oceans and climbed mountains with so many authors and never has my thirst for this genre been quenched.

Some of my favorites?

The Lost Gods (5 books) by Megan Derr  5 stars every single one.
Endangered Fae Series (4 books, 2 stories) by Angel Martinez
No Ocean Too Deep by Leona Carver

Hidden Gem (3 books) by Lissa Kasey
So that’s just a beginning of some of mine just “off the cuff” as they say.  What are yours?

We have one last week for everyone to enter into our Father’s Day giveaway.  Give us your best stories with families and children, gay dads and their kids…

~Pride Father’s Day Celebration Giveaway – Last Week~

Give us your best suggestions for books involving LGBTQIA families or LGBT people with children stories.  I just finished last week’s wonderful Accepting The Fall by Meg Harding, with firefighter Zander Brooks learning to cope with fatherhood as the parent of a bright, frightened 5 year old.  Terrific story.  And Dragon Home by Mell Eight with William, the foster parent of two growing dragons kits (a whole different set of parenting skills required there).  But I know there are soooo many out there!  Let’s start a list!

So for Father’s Day, what books melted your heart?  That had children, maybe puppies or kittens or both?  Amy Lane’s Promises series just jumps to my mind.  What comes into yours?  Ones that break your heart and then puts them back together again.  Stories you never forget because your heart won’t let them go….

Tell me which ones you love and let’s share our favorites.  A random reader who leaves a comment or readers (you never know here) will receive a $10 gift certificate.  Dreamspinner Press or Amazon, your choice.    Must be 18 years of age or older to enter.  Happy Pride Month.   Giveaway ends midnight June 30th.  Winners announced July 1st.

Sad Announcement

And now for some very sad news.  Author A.C. Katt has passed away suddenly.  Kris Jacen of MLR Press announced the news on her FB page.  Many of our reviewers here, including Paul who also passed away recently, loved her stories including her Werewolves of Manhattan series.  Here is more on the author:

AC Katt was born in New York City’s Greenwich Village. She remembers sitting at the fountain in Washington Square Park listening to folk music while they passed the hat. At nine, her parents dragged her to New Jersey where she grew up, married and raised four children and became a voracious reader of romantic fiction. At one time she owned over two thousand novels.

Now, most of AC’s books are electronic (although she still keeps six bookcases of hardcovers), so she never has to give away another book. AC writes GLBT andis to writing, a late bloomer, however, she’s found her niche writing GLBT romance. She currently writes for MLR Press, JMS Books, and Decadent Publishing.

She will be missed.  Our condolences go out to her family and friends.  Her stories will always be with us.

Pride Month Continues with Readers Recommended Best Coming Out Stories! This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Pride Month Continues with A Winner Announcement

June continues and so does Pride Month celebrations!  We have had some wonderful comments and book suggestions for Best Coming Out stories. I’m going to put them all into a list and have them up by the last Sunday this month. Here’s  some of the wonderful comments and recs we’ve had:

Readers Recommended Best Coming Out Stories!

✒︎From H.B.:

“I’ve never been to a Pride event but it sounds like something fun and exciting to support.
My favorite stories that have characters coming out are:
Knight of Ocean Avenue by Tara Lain
Ready For Love by Stella Starling
Falling Together by SK (Shelley) Grayson
#gaymers series by Annabeth Albert
Thanks a Lot, John LeClair by Johanna Parkhurst
Patient Eyes by Andy Eisenberg

H.B. has several of my favorites there. Knight of Ocean Avenue by Tara Lain and the #gaymers series by Annabeth Albert.  H.B. also has some I’m going to have to look up. Yay!

✒︎From Didi:

“Happy Pride Month to everyone of queer spectrum. A few of coming out titles that stay in my head are Kaje Harper’s Life Lessons, Josh Lanyon’s Death of A Pirate King, also John Goode’s Tales from Foster High. On the first two titles the coming out might not be the main issue of the story, but it’s something that affected the character deeply and overall emotionally engaging to me.”

Didi hit all 3 of mine, including a favorite Josh Lanyon series!

✒︎Purple Reader came through with a book I haven’t read either (so my list grows). Here’s what he has to say:

“DC is one of my fav cities for a couple special reasons. I’m not from there, but on a trip 15 yrs ago that’s where I came out (so you could say that’s my fav coming out story :-); and on another trip that’s where I proposed to my husband. Oh my, a fav novel about coming out? So many, and as always I like to go for beyond the norm. So one fav is “Mysterious Skin.” With its coming of age there’s self-awareness/coming out to oneself as well as others, and it deals with tough issues, but that it all the more poignant.”

That’s Mysterious Skin by Scott Heim.  I’ve got a GR link included.

✒︎Suze294 also chimed in with an all time favorite of mine Sean Kennedy.

Tigers and Devils by Sean Kennedy! One day I plan to get to a Pride event – probably Manchester or Liverpool as closest”

✒︎Ardent Reader surprised me with one of the first m/m books I ever read on her lists (non fan fiction that is).  Here is Ardent Reader’s list:

“A few of my favorite stories that have coming themes are: My Summer of Wes– Missy Welsh, Christmas Kitsch by Amy Lane, The Catch Trap-Marion Zimmer Bradley

Because of the great response, we are going to pick 2 winners this week!  They are Ardent EReader and waxapplelover!  Congratulations!  You both win a $10 Dreamspinner gift certificate.  Stella will be in touch with you both shortly.  The rest of the comments, recommendations and full list will be up next Sunday.

Now for this week’s giveaway to finish up Pride Month!

Pride Father’s Day Celebration Giveaway!

Pride Month Continues! Its Pride Weekend Here in the Nation’s Capitol!

Pride Weekend actually kicked off on Thursday with a splendid Rooftop event continuing on to the Pride Parade today (Saturday when I write the blog) and then the Pride Festival on Sunday.  Each year Capitol Pride Weekend gets bigger and better!  The schedule of events keeps growing as does the crowds who come to enjoy the entertainment and each other.  There’s parades, music, festivals, dances, rooftop events and so much more. The diversity of the people flocking to the Pride events, smiling, laughing, the support and yes, pride that shines is amazing!

Never been here for Pride Weekend?  Want to see what’s offered?  It’s not too late for Sunday’s event or to plan for next year.  I’ve got some photos from the Capitol Pride Alliance site for you to look at, for more visit their site or FB page.

Here are a couple of links to the Capitol Pride Alliance page for this weekend’s events and for their main page (they can always use the year around support):

Celebration 2017 – Capital Pride Alliance

Capital Pride Alliance: Home

I feel that since our presidential election, we are living in an age where ugliness and intolerance is promoted from our highest office and that’s not acceptable.  So Pride events, Pride Month and our support becomes even more important.  My little flags from GRL? Outside and in my planters and Uber will get a workout this weekend.  I hope to see some of you there if you live locally!
Also we started our Pride Giveaway last week!  Don’t forget to enter!  Here it is again for those who missed it the first time.

June is LGBTQIA Pride Month! This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Standard

June is LGBTQIA Pride Month!

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is celebrating Pride Month!

Its no surprise that Trump broke with Obama’s tradition of designating June as ‘LGBT Pride Month! But the majority of organizations, groups and government agencies recognize it as such!

Writer Peter LaBarbera in his article on Pride Month writes ” As LifeSiteNews reported last week, the U.S. Army Surgeon General and Commanding General of the Army Medical Command, Lt. Gen. Nadja West, issued an “LGBT Pride Month” statement.

Earlier, the State Department posted a pro-homosexual “pride” essay on its website, and U.S. Embassy in Macedonia flew the homosexual-activist “rainbow flag” beneath Old Glory to celebrate an annual LGBTQ activist day. (Under Obama, American Embassies from Spain to Israel repeatedly flew the homosexuality-celebrating flag abroad in this manner.)”

Our support for the LGBTQIA community has never been needed more.  Get involved, march, show support! There’s so many ways in which to do this!

From Equality Now to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, to all the wonderful Pride Parades soon to come, let’s celebrate the right to love who you want, be who you want with equal rights and respect you are due.  Happy Pride Month!

May Showers, Upended Plans and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Standard

By this time in May my gardens should be underway.  My hanging baskets planted and I should feel a sense of accomplishment.  Instead my backyard is a cold swamp from all the heavy rains we’ve had, awaiting plants that the unseasonably cold temps and garden centers say it’s still too early to plant even though they are hardy and perennial.  The front yard beds are a tangle of weeds awaiting the new rototiller and bed makeovers. Ah,  fickle nature!  Ah, upended plans and shattered schedules.

I tell you ….the temptation to sit here and let the  frustration build is great.  Equally so is grabbing that glass of wine and being philosophical about it all (including the amount of weeds left to demolish).  I’ll let you all guess as to which won out.

Meanwhile the meteorologists are again teasing us with a forecast of blue skies and high temperatures for this coming week.  Shakes head and wags a finger in their direction.  I’ve seen such forecasts in the past.  This time, no plans.  I’m going to take a wait and see approach, a very low bar I’m setting to be sure.

What do you all do when your plans go astray?  Or schedules go splat?  Do you reach for the Häagen-Dazs or maybe Ben and Jerry’s and a spoon?  Or perhaps your favorite comfort read and a hike?  What’s your go to coping mechanism?  Help a reviewer out here while I ponder my soppy gardens and my TBR lists….

Melanie’s Soppy Garden Contest

Tell me what you do to cope when things start to go awry!  Read, write, hike, paint!  If reading, what books?  A random winner will be chosen to receive a $10 gift cert from Dreamspinner Press.  Please let your email address where you can be reached if chosen.  Contest ends next weekend, 5/20, when I can report that I’ve made progress on my gardens after they’ve had a chance to dry out!

~

Meanwhile, we have many wonderful books we are reviewing this week including the following audiobooks.  Our newest reviewer, Alessandro, has his review of Behemoth and the Wisp by Linn Edwards and if you are a lover of RJ Scott’s Sanctuary series, it’s finally coming to a close with the last book in the series, By The Numbers, out this week.  My review is up as well!.  We have something for everyone!  Check out our schedule below and be with us all week for the giveaways, author interviews and our reviews!
