A Lucy Review: A Secret to Die For by Edward Kendrick

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Brian Newell is an average young man, working in a coffee shop. That is, until he learns he’s the sole heir to his grandfather Alistair’s fortune. A grandfather he didn’t even know he had. There is a proviso, however. He has to live in his grandfather’s house for one year, and take care of his macaw, before he can inherit anything.

Conley Finnegan was close friends with Alistair, cataloguing his book collection and tending to his yard. He’s less than happy when he meets Brian, or so it seems. But that isn’t quite the truth. Conley has a deep secret, and part of it requires Brian in his life — but only as a friend.

However, his wishes to the contrary, Conley falls in love with Brian, and vice versa. That small problem, as Conley thinks of it, will impact their lives in ways neither can imagine.

I have to say, I was way off on what the paranormal aspect of this was going to be.  I was so sure but I was wrong.  That  being said, I was conflicted on what to say about this book. There were some things I liked and some things that didn’t work for me at all.  So let’s discuss.

Brian’s parents sort of feel he is wasting his potential, working in a coffee shop and unsure what he wants to do.  They apparently don’t visit much.  When a lawyer lets Brian know that the name he has always known as his grandfather was not his biological grandfather, he is stunned to say the least.  But not only does Brian have to live in Alistair’s (biological grandfather) house for a year in order to inherit, but he has to take care of Sir Kenith, the macaw.  The worst thing for me was he is not allowed to tell his family about Alistair.  I couldn’t figure out how lying to your family was meant to be a good thing.

But that’s sort of a theme through here because Conley lies to Brian numerous times.  Sometimes to cover up who he really is, sometimes to cover up what he needs from Brian and sometimes for no reason at all. For example, he tells Brian that Alistair, his very good friend, never knew Conley was gay even though he did.  Why lie?  “Another lie in the string of them I”ve told him.  A small one, but still…”  Similarly, when Brian asks about Thanksgiving, Conley lies again for no reason.  “Another lie in my long list of them to him.”  I started to feel like it was a set up so Brian wouldn’t inherit, or something similar.  He also is rude to Brian for no reason at times.

The actual reveal as to what Conley is and why Alistair offered Brian the house happens without Conley mentioning a thing beforehand, just Brian sees it and Conley takes off.  It was all glossed over with so little from Conley that I was confused for Brian.  Brian’s parents are conveniently away for a year?  He has to lie to them about this for a year? Forever?

I thought this had potential to be really interesting, it was a novel concept that I haven’t read previously.  I adored Sir K and their interactions with him but I didn’t feel the connection between Conley and Brian and I definitely felt like pieces were missing from the plot.

Cover art really fit the way I envisioned Brian and Conley, especially Conley with his red hair.  And of course, Sir K had to make an appearance, so I thought it was well done.

:

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Renae Kaye here today on tour with her new Loving You story, Knowing Me, Knowing You.  Welcome, Renae!

Thank you for having me on your blog.  I’m here to excitedly tell everyone about my new book – Knowing Me, Knowing You.  This is the fourth book in the Loving You series, and yes, I want to reassure everyone that Liam and Jay are back along with the rest of the gang.

This book concentrates on the quiet one of the group – Shane.  Shane isn’t really one to shout out his love for people from the top of his lungs.  He’s not into the public declarations and the fireworks.  Shane’s love is deeper and has been there for a long while.  He has tried to ignore it.  He has tried to make it go away.  And when he finally thinks he’s over his obsession with Ambrose Jakoby, the damn man comes back and thrusts himself back into Shane’s life.

You’ve given me a couple of questions to answer about myself, my writing and my new book.  It saves me rattling on and gives me a lot of scope.  So here goes:

How much of yourself goes into a character?

It’s an interesting concept and one that has been studied by people.  There’s a school of thought that the first character you ever wrote is the most like you.  The first character I ever wrote was in a MF-romance, and actually she shared a lot of my life experiences – she has yet to be published yet, but I’m working on it.  She went to the same university as me, worked in the same job, likes the same TV shows and has the same sense of humour, but she’s also very much unlike me too.  She’s a lot stronger.  Maybe, as writers, that’s why we write that first character?  It’s that person we hope to be?

My first two published characters are Jay and Liam from Loving Jay.  There is certainly a lot of my personality in each of them.  I also have been known to suffer from – uh hm – verbal diarrhoea? One of the things I love about Jay is nothing gets him down for long.  That’s also something that comes from me.  Despite trying to be an angsty, edgy author, I end up unrestrainedly perky.

Liam is also like me.  He tried to conform to a family that doesn’t fit him, tries to make everyone happy, and is rather accepting of people who are different to him.  That’s me.  While it took Liam about twenty-odd years to say, “This is me! Accept me or not,” it took me a little longer.  I was thirty-four before I could tell my large extended family that I wasn’t going to fit into that box they had set.

However, Shane and Ambrose are further down the track in my writing career.  They have their own personalities and I’m now comfortable in writing someone unlike me.   Shane is certainly a bookworm like I am, but he’s also an introvert.  He’s happy with who he is.  He’s happy to float along in the supporting role.  Shane’s a great character and I loved writing him, but he really isn’t me.

Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

Oh yes!

I was about 10 or 11 years old when I discovered “Dolly Fiction” at my local newsagency.  They had a box of cheap books and I bought as many as my pocket money would allow.  For the next couple of years I devoured teenage romance until my older sister loaned me one of her Mills and Boon books.  Then I was set.  I’ve read romances since then.  I’ve gone through phases of liking different genres within the romance set – I’ve done shifters and settlers and pirates and Vikings and Victorian eras and vampires and cowboys and comedies and cyborgs and erotica…  It seems I’ve tried them all.  I tend to binge read on a sub-genre for a while.

I was like that when I started reading M/M.  I binged for a long while before branching out into different sub-genres within the romance umbrella.  Sometimes I attempt to read a non-romance, but I don’t get very far.  They just don’t hold my attention.

Romance all the way.

How do you choose your covers?  (curious on my part)

With great difficulty!

Knowing Me, Knowing You is published through Dreamspinner Press and they have some wonderful cover artists working for them.  The two hardest aspects of the cover for me is finding a theme that represents what is inside the book, and finding models that suit the picture in my head.

The Loving You series is a light-hearted and slightly comedic storytelling.  The covers need to reflect that and I like the use of light colours and smiling models.  The font used in the title is a bit crazy, which also shows the reader it will be light-hearted.  My Safe series is less humorous and has a higher descriptive sex level which is reflected in the use of naked torsos and block lettering.

I have the added complexity of the fact I like to write characters who are not the norm you find in romance novels.  I write flamboyant twinks like Jay, or tubby, short characters like Shawn, or even men with long plaits like Harley. Trying to find models for these are hard.

In Knowing Me, Knowing You I once again wrote characters that are not necessarily easy to find.  Shane describes himself as wallpaper – he blends.  There is nothing about him that makes him stand out.  He’s Mr Average.  This is not the usual type of person photographers prefer.  But then I wrote a character of Ambrose who is part-Aboriginal.  Trying to find an available photograph of an extremely fit man (Ambrose is a top-level sportsman) who is only part-Aboriginal and who is smiling….  Needle in a haystack!

As for the layout of a cover and all the parts that come together, that’s what makes a cover artist an artist.  As an author you just have to trust them.

Have you ever put a story away, thinking it just didn’t work?  Then years/months/whatever later inspiration struck and you loved it?  Is there a title we would recognize if that happened?

Of course.  I started writing Knowing Me, Knowing You over two years ago.  It’s been thrown aside so many times because I didn’t think readers would be interested in the story between a bookworm and a football star.  I also had doubts about the reality of their love – would the readers understand?  Ambrose and Shane have one of those loves that doesn’t need fireworks and public declarations.  Neither of them want that.  It’s a love that has stood the test of time, separation, and hurt.

I’m a chronic WIP (work in progress) starter – I have half-completed stories all over the place.  Two of them belong to The Tav series.  Another belongs to The Shearing Gun.

With the stories for The Tav, the reason I threw them aside was the community changed.  You can write a story that fits a trope or even a world event, but soon after something sours that theme and I’ve found it too politically incorrect to continue to write a story on a theme where people feel outraged.  The story may reflect real life, but sometimes people don’t want to read about reality, they want the fantasy.

As for The Shearing Gun #2, I want to make sure the character is unique and not just a carbon copy of Hank from the first story.  Sometimes an author needs a little distance for that to happen.  So poor Mickey is still waiting for me to finish his story.

I’m hoping that one day I can pick up their stories again and finish them off.

Have you ever had an issue in RL and worked it through by writing it out in a story?  Maybe how you thought you’d feel in a situation?

That’s how the first Loving You book started.  I know someone who is very much like Jay – obviously gay, flamboyant, twinkish, and damn proud of it.  With all the homophobia that is around in RL, I always found it amazing how people flocked to his side – drawn to that person that IS him.

I wondered how a guy who was from a very masculinity-orientated world (like fishing, football, mining, drinking) would react if they were drawn to this person.  It was me exploring that situation that led me to writing Loving Jay.

I’m what they call a “pantser” – I write by the seat of my pants without a plot line or story draft to follow.  All of my work comes from throwing two characters together into a situation and then working through it by writing it out.

What’s next for you as a writer?

As a writer I’m always working on the next story.  I’ve just finished writing another novel that is not related to the ones I’ve published, but I’m proud of it and love it to bits.

Publication-wise I have a novella Christmas story coming out in December as a part of the Dreamspinner Advent Calendar (link: https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/2018-advent-calendar-daily-delivery-package-warmest-wishes-10067-b).  You will receive my story if you’ve paid for the whole series, or you can buy it separately from December.

In 2019 I will hopefully be releasing a couple of non-gay romance books under another pen name, so that will be a wonderful challenge for me.

Knowing Me, Knowing You

Loving You #4

By Renae Kaye

Blurb

Can friends turned occasional lovers move beyond past mistakes and wrong assumptions to build something that can last?

Quiet bookworm Shane has a big secret—one he’s kept for fifteen years. AFL superstar Ambrose Jakoby grew up next door to Shane. They were close friends, and Shane supported Ambrose through school.

One night, everything changed.

Before Ambrose left Perth as a scared eighteen-year-old to head to Melbourne and take up his new footy career, Ambrose and Shane slept together.

For the next nine years, they continued a secret friends-with-benefits situation whenever Ambrose was in town. Shane never knew exactly where he stood or how to define Ambrose’s sexuality—and Ambrose didn’t know either. Then last Christmas, everything changed again, and a disagreement strained their friendship. Shane vowed to get over his unrequited love.

But Ambrose is back, recovering from an injury and hoping to make amends. He claims he’s ready for a real relationship. But Shane has to decide whether Ambrose means it and whether his Hufflepuff soul can take the chance.

About the Author

Renae Kaye is a lover and hoarder of books who thinks libraries are devilish places because they make you give the books back.  She consumed her first adult romance book at the tender age of thirteen and hasn’t stopped since.  After years – and thousands of stories! – of not having book characters do what she wants, she decided she would write her own novel and found the characters still didn’t do what she wanted.  It hasn’t stopped her though.  She believes that maybe one day the world will create a perfect couple – and it will be the most boring story ever.  So until then she is stuck with quirky, snarky and imperfect characters who just want their story told.

Renae lives in Perth, Western Australia and writes in five minute snatches between the demands of two kids, a forbearing husband, too many pets, too much housework and her beloved veggie garden.  She is a survivor of being the youngest in a large family and believes that laughter (and a good book) can cure anything.

Happy Halloween! And Welcome, November! This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is but a few days away!  And some more frightfully fun and delightfully scary recommendations for tales of Stories that Go Boo for You still are making it our way. While I pause to wipe away some  pumpkin guts and toss a knife or two on the table, let me see what we have to offer up this Sunday morning:

More Recs of Stories that Go Boo for You

🎃From P.R.:

Those are some serious pumpkin carvings. My sister, nephew and I have tried pumpkin carving and it’s really not as east as t.v. makes it.
Here I go with more stories good for a Halloween read.
The Tourist by Clare London
Lesser-Bred series by Adrienne Wilder

🎃Ami:

I don’t celebrate Halloween since well, it’s not really Indonesian traditions, although I do like seeing all the decorations!

As for some Halloween Read — I HIGHLY recommend Stephen Osborne’s “Duncan Andrews” series, which involves detective with a ghost boyfriend. Or maybe “Winter” by Josh Lanyon or Motel.Pool by Kim Fielding.

Happy Halloween!

🎃From Jen:

For a book to be scary to me I have to care if the characters are in harm’s way and the spooky elements need to be more paranormal.

I am currently reading the new anthology Devil Take Me. I am on the second story by TA Moore and it is pretty scary. (The first story by Jordan L. Hawk was more whimsical than scary – though still really good.)

Some other books that got my “boo” going were:
A Light Amongst Shadows by Kelly York
Spirits series by Jordan L. Hawk
Tyack & Frayne series by Harper Fox
P.S. I Spook You by SE Harmon
A Frost of Cares by Amy Rae Durreson
Whyborne & Griffin series by Jordan L. Hawk

🎃From P.R. again:

A lot of gays go all out for Halloween. LOL, I dressed in drag with my friends one year, rented a limo & went to all the bars. And then there’s the Haunted Halsted Halloween Parade in Boystown Chicago. And with the mention of haunted, and yours with houses…
– you’ve got to include haunted houses – a pair by Poppy:
LOST SOULS, & DRAWING BLOOD, by Poppy Z. Brite
– And what’s more haunted than one of my fav locales – a fav set in NOLA:
THE WOLF AT THE DOOR by Jameson Currier
– Of course, another in NOLA – classic ghost story & good psycho thriller:
DUST OF WONDERLAND by Lee Thomas
– And you can’t mention NOLA without its iconic author & son, a pair from a pair of Rices:
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE by Anne Rice
A DENSITY OF SOULS by Christopher Rice

🎃From our own Chaos Moondrawn:

Ally Blue Down
Sarah Waters Affinity (f/f)
Bump In the Night series from Riptide
Jacqueline Rohrbach Speak With the Dead
One of the stories I read and reviewed this week is The Werewolf on Lowre Few Lane by Bryce Bentley-Tales.  It’s a first novel by this author and it’s amazing.  YA, full of 13 and 14 year olds on an incredible adventure that’s scary, life altering, and very fitting this Halloween.  I just adored it.  I think you will too.  And it is on the list for YA Books that go Boo for You. Another?  Green Death by Madeleine Ribbon!  A post apocalyptic thriller that had  me up late at night

BLURB

Don’t like the athletes. Don’t sleep with the athletes. Don’t fall for the athletes. It had never been particularly difficult to follow the rules, but Nick had a feeling he was about to be tested.

Heisman winner. Member of the national championship team. NFL rookie of the year. Quarterback Colin O’Connor knows he’s become the ultimate romance novel cliché: all the success he’s ever dreamed of but nobody with whom to share it. Too bad it’s not as simple as asking out the next girl who intrigues him – because the next girl to intrigue him probably won’t be a girl at all.

Unexpectedly, the solution comes in one neat package: Nick Wheeler, lead journalist for a leading sports and pop culture blog. Hired by Colin’s team, Nick comes to Miami to shine a spotlight on the NFL’s most private quarterback.

The heat in Miami rises when Nick discovers Colin is nothing like the hollow personality he pretends to be in interviews and he’s even hotter in person than on his Sports Illustrated cover. Nick knows this is the story of his career, and it also hits close to home. What he needs is to help Colin share his story while keeping their growing relationship from boiling over in the press, but what he wants is to tell the world.

EXCERPT

“Wow,” Colin breathed out, the sheet shifting down his torso as he propped himself up with an elbow. “What a view.”

Even though the ocean and sky and sand were hazy with the golden light of the rising sun, Nick still had trouble taking his eyes off the man next to him.

“Yeah,” Nick said, still staring at Colin. “Fucking fabulous view.”

Colin glanced over and flushed. He rolled over and slid out of bed, bare feet padding on the tile floor as he headed towards the bathroom. “When you look at me that way,” he said, his voice carrying back into the bedroom, “it’s easy to believe I really look as good as you say.”

“You should believe it,” Nick said as Colin returned to bed. Nick knew he needed to use the bathroom, too, at least to brush away his surely horrible morning breath so he could kiss this beautiful man next to him.

Just one problem. Nick glanced at the tile floor with dismay. “Is that as cold as it looks?”

Colin shot him a playful smile and gave him a little shove to the edge of the bed. “Your turn to find out,” he said, and Nick gave a half-hearted smile, expecting to freeze his balls off as he tiptoed to the bathroom. Instead, he found the floor to be shockingly warm against his bare feet.

“Teddy, that rich bastard,” Nick exclaimed as he walked to the bathroom. “Heated floors.”

Nick brushed his teeth and took a piss, returning to bed with warm feet and cold hands, which he proceeded to place right on Colin’s ribcage. But Colin didn’t flinch, only tugged Nick closer, until their limbs were tangled together. Nick shifted up a fraction and hesitated, their eyes locked together and their lips only an inch apart.

“You keep talking about me,” Colin murmured dreamily, his hand smoothing down a wayward tuft of Nick’s hair. “But you’re gorgeous. I stare at you all the damn time.”

It was hard not to notice and impossible not to feel smug that Colin O’Connor spent at least half his waking hours staring at his ass.

A large hand slid around his hip and cupped that ass – but not with the sort of tacky possession that sometimes gave Nick a bad taste in his mouth, but with reverence and a playful affection that made his heart ache.

“I know you notice,” Colin continued, the edge of his lips quirking into a smile. “You’re too nice to call me out on it.”

“What, and make you stop?” Nick asked.

A MelanieM Review: Faith (Graphene #2) by Archie Hellshire

Rating 3.75 stars out of 5

Tuck is switching dorms. He’s had enough of his roommate’s odd hours, strange behavior, and teasing from his football teammates, who think there’s something more between them. He’s just put the last pad into his duffel bag when the campus goes on lockdown and the police swarm in.

They say that Tuck’s roommate, Sam, is a wanted man, but Tuck knows better. Sam is no criminal; he won’t even let Tuck kill spiders. Tuck takes a risk and helps Sam escape from the clutches of the authorities, and together they try to make it off the campus. As they try to evade the search parties, it becomes clear that they’re after something more than Sam; a secret project Sam’s been working on that has billion-dollar implications.

Tuck’s not sure what’s going on. He’s not sure what the truth is or who to trust. He’s not sure they’re going to make it out of this. And as the night wears on, he’s not sure how he really feels about Sam anymore. Sam is always sure about Tuck, though, and Tuck isn’t going to let him down.

For all that is packed into this story, Faith (Graphene #2) by Archie Hellshire is a short novel.  it feels that you are no sooner deeply involved in the characters that its ending on a somewhat wavering note and this chapter of the characters lives is done.  It’s a very much an installment story with the  characters HFN but everything else seems so shaky.

I admit I didn’t read the first story and even now I’m not sure how important that is here.  Yes Daniel becomes an important factor here but his boyfriend is  nothing but a will o the wisp at the end.  The focus here shines brightly on Tuck, Sam, and the cause at the heart of all the action/intrigue here.

The relationship between Tuck and Sam is a special one and I can’t help but wish we had more of that revealed here to us.  What is we was endearing and heartwarming.  It was so easy to love this pair.  And still relate to the issues Tuck was having at the   beginning of the story.

I think the ending was a little shocking in that there was no foundation laid for that sort of element in this story.  Perhaps it exists in Chance, the first in the Graphine series.  I do want want to read the next in this series so it looks as though I will be going back to pick up that one as well.

Also if you are looking for lots of hot sex, uh no, not the book for you.  Sweet kisses is about it.  Remember boys on the run, low, low heat, But soo much sweetness. That makes up for  it. Trust me.

I found the characters able to tug on your emotions, the story well written, and enough loose ends to be considered a minor cliffhanger for the next addition.  If you love your contemporary romance with more than a hint of danger and intrigue but your characters of college age, here is a series made for you.  Especially with those with a hint of the environmental/scientific bent.

Cover Art: Natasha Snow is on point for the story and characters right down to the differences in sizes. Love it.

A Lila Review: Ben’s Bakery and the Hanukkah Miracle by Penelope Peters

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Adam Bernard’s love-life is on ice.

Adam gave up his dreams of professional hockey when his mom died ten years ago; now his only focus is being the Jewish son his dad’s always wanted. Problem is, the pee-wee hockey team he coaches is in Boston for an international tourney the same week as Hanukkah. Now he’s stuck in a foreign city without so much as a candle. Enter Ben Daniels, the super-cute owner of the local kosher-style bakery. All Adam wants is a chance to celebrate the holiday away from home – but sweet and sexy Ben could light more than just Adam’s candles.

Ben Daniels’s love-life is on the back-burner.

Ben hasn’t stepped on the ice in three years. The official reason is that he’s too focused on making his kosher-style bakery a success. Problem is, he’s never kept kosher in his life, and internet searches only take you so far. Enter Adam Bernard, in town for one week only, with all the cultural touchstones anyone could want. All Ben wants is Adam’s Certified Jewish Opinion on his sufganiyot – but Adam could be the one to light Ben’s desire for ice again.

This Hanukkah, Adam and Ben find their miracles aren’t only on the ice.

Their fling was only meant to last for the holiday. But Adam’s about to get the chance to rewrite his history – and Ben’s dreams of business success are about to come true. Will they be so willing to extinguish their relationship in eight days – or will their Hanukkah miracle last for a lifetime?

Ben’s Bakery and the Hanukkah Miracle is an amazing treat to start the holiday season. The prologue was a bit hard to read since it felt as an omniscient narrator took over but in the end, it worked. After the first chapter, it’s easier to follow the author’s vision.

This story reads like a Hallmark Holiday movie. It’s sweat, steamy, interesting, and filled with hope and well wishes. All the characters were well-rounded and had a roll in moving the plot forward. The secondary characters are diverse but not simple tokens. They added color to the story.  The kids were perfect and acted their age, a mix of curiosity and innocence that balanced the adults and the drama.

Ben and Adam had great chemistry from the instant they met. All their matchmakers gave the reader a little window into their personality. They are both Jewish but were brought up differently. It took them several nights to get over the majority of their differences but they made it work.

I can’t tell you everything the author shows is accurate but she did an excellent job bringing culture and religion to the forefront of the story without making it feel as a soapbox. I loved the little details and how much they meant to Ben and Adam. I haven’t tried any of Ben’s dishes but I will love to do it now, even the eggplant 😉

This is definitely the way to start the Holidays this year.

The cover by Creativindie goes perfectly with the story. The characters are exactly as the author described them, and all the other little elements are present in the book. Great color and composition.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Honeymoon For One by Keira Andrews

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Amazing! Kiera Andrews brings home another hit and strikes it out of the ballpark.

The day before his wedding, Ethan comes home early to surprise his fiancé before they head out to their bachelor party. Though he’s not looking forward to the crowds because he’s hard of hearing, going deaf at an early age due to a genetic anomaly, he’s a bit distracted when he first walks in. But what and who he finds in his bed is exactly what you’d imagine. His fiancé and his best friend have been carrying on for several years and the proposition his fiancé makes nearly floors him.

Gutted, and with no immediate family left and now no best friend either, Ethan makes the decision to go to Australia alone. Intended to be his honeymoon trip, a visit to Australia is something his mother always wanted, and he chose the destination in part to honor her, so why not go alone? Better than staying in big, noisy New York City, where he’s not happy anyway and half the time can’t hear what anyone is saying due to the cacophony of sound echoing from building to building.

Clay Kelly drives bus tours on Australia’s East Coast. Living in Sydney with his adult daughter, the 46-year-old divorced father of two is pretty happy with life as it is, though he never does much more than work and watch cricket—his all-time favorite sport. When a hard of hearing young man joins the tour alone, Clay decides to befriend him—especially after he overhears the man explaining that he’s alone because his wedding was called off. He figures the least he can do is help by doing as the young man asks: speak slowly while facing him so that he can understand what’s being said. So many others talk too fast or put their hands in front of their face or turn slightly away. The author makes this point really well by adding mumble, mumble to the dialogue when in Ethan’s POV so we can appreciate how difficult it is for him to hear.

The author also takes time with this subject, educating without preaching, and she develops Ethan into such a loveable character that I just wanted to take this sweet young man under my wing and show him he’s not alone.  Fortunately, that’s what Clay does. He’s never been with a man, though he had a brush with neighborhood homophobia toward a nice young man in his childhood and suspected he might have felt an attraction before the boy was run out of the area. But he’s most definitely drawn to Ethan and decides to act on his attraction, despite the fact he has to tell his kids, his ex-wife, and his parents.

This story has all the elements I love: age gap, man over forty, first time with a man, a sweet MC (or two), ordinary—yet complex—people doing extraordinary things like falling in love with someone who lives half a world away. Just lovely and I highly recommend it.

The cover by Dar Albert is perfect for this story and features a young man sunbathing at the beach and another walking past behind him. The colors of the sky and ocean are bright blue and the title in hot pink. I think I might have picked this up for the cover alone, but the contents are definitely a solid win.

BLURB

Frankie

No one understands why I love him.

Why I need him.

Why I took him back.

But they don’t have to.

I know.

Despite the hurt and the heartache, I see beneath his skin.

And I’m different now.

No more Flirty Frankie.

My dreams have changed, and so have I.

I’m stronger.

I believe in myself.

And I’m a hell of a lot smarter than a year ago.

Now it’s his turn to show me the man he really is.

To prove it.

I’ve always loved him.

But that’s not enough.

I need to learn to trust him.

Aaron

No more excuses.

No more chances.

I make this right or lose him for good.

I have to do this.

No one has ever believed in me but him.

No one has ever wanted me but him.

I can’t let him down.

I won’t.

I can’t let myself down.

I’m trying, but it’s so damn hard.

No matter what they throw at me, I’m stronger.

And I’m going to make it.

I’m on my way.

With Frankie by my side.

I can see the future.

I have a future.

Us. Together.

Forever.

EXCERPT

“Still no luck?”

I set a cup of coffee in front of Aaron and stood across from him at the small kitchen counter. He’d come over to my place early to use my computer and had been job hunting for hours. When Aaron got out of jail, he’d wanted to move back in with me, but I said no. The past few months, I’d let him stay over more often than not, but he still had his own place. I was being careful.

“No, I fucking can’t even see straight anymore. I need a break.” He rubbed his eyes, then took a sip and let out a gusty sigh. “Thanks, babe. Hits the spot.”

The endearment sent a warm glow through me. In our joint therapy sessions, Aaron and I discussed his dislike for showing affection and how that made me feel unappreciated. Since he’d been back, he’d made the effort. It might not seem like much, but to me, it meant he listened and that my feelings were important to him.

I put on my most positive face for him. “Something’ll turn up. What about that one at the new supermarket that opened last week on Cross Bay Boulevard?”

He grimaced, his face darkening. “They said they didn’t have openings. But they still got the sign up in the window, ya know?”

I did know. And it worried me. Aaron had been out of jail for months now and had yet to find anything. And as much as I saw him trying to work through his anger issues, I worried he might slip and bring us back to that ugly place of last year.

“You want me to have Austin ask Rhoades? He’s got so many businesses, I bet he can find you something.”

“No,” he responded with an angry snap. “Your friend hates me. I don’t need no favors from him. I’m gonna do this on my own.”

“Okay, okay. It was only a suggestion.” He stood, and God help me, I couldn’t stop that involuntary jerk of my heart when he walked around the counter to stand in front of me. I hated seeing him defeated and sad.

“I know it was.” He reached out and cupped my jaw, his palm rough and warm against my face. I wished every one of the doubters could see these tender moments between us instead of remembering the old Aaron. “I’m not blaming you. My problems are my fault.”

I put my arms around him, hugging him close. “We both were at fault. But now we can do better. I want to show everyone the person I remember from when we first met. Smart, funny, sexy.”

He palmed my ass, bringing me flush up against him so I could feel the hard ridge of his dick against my stomach. “Sexy, huh? I’m only sexy for you.…You know that, right?”

“Mmhmmm.” He got me ready in no time flat.

Felice Stevens Logo

Felice Stevens has always been a romantic at heart. While life is tough, she believes there is a happy ending for everyone. She started reading traditional historical romances as a teenager, then life and law school got in the way. It wasn’t until she picked up a copy of Bertrice Small and became swept away to Queen Elizabeth’s court that her interest in romance novels was renewed.

But somewhere along the way, her reading shifted to stories of men falling in love. Once she picked up her first gay romance, she became so enamored of the character-driven stories and the overwhelming emotion there was no turning back.

Felice lives in New York City with her husband and two children. Her day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. Although she practices law, she daydreams of a time when she can sit by a beach and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be some angst along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

An Ashlez Review: The Story of Us by Barbara Elsborg

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

The Story of Us is a new adult contemporary romance. It deals with family and social issues, violence and cruelty towards children, sexual situations though not sexual abuse, and has dark elements and suspense. The events and locations are a mixture of real and fictional. The characters are fictional.

“Are you okay?
The first words Zed says to Caspian, and the first time someone has cared about the answer. On a hot summer’s day, the lives of two boys are changed forever. A rebel and a risk taker, Caspian doesn’t give a damn for the consequences. Studious and obedient, Zed is the good boy who is never good enough.

The two couldn’t be more different, but there’s one thing they share, a need to belong to someone who understands them, someone who cares. Their friendship goes deeper than either can possibly imagine. They’re young, in love, and planning their future when an act of betrayal tears them apart.

Fate has dealt its hand. Seasons pass. Zed’s words follow Caspian through pain, fear and into the darkest of places. Friendships last a lifetime, even when the world conspires to crush them. But this is more than friendship. This is love and they’re not going to let it slip through their fingers.

This Is Our Story is a tale of love and survival, and the triumph of good over evil against the odds.

It’s a long story – 158,000 words that takes place over ten summers.

This book is very heavily focused on religion from the get-go, Muslim, I was fascinated honestly, reading about it was no hard feat, though I’m sure it’s not going to be the book for everyone just based on the religion aspect alone.  It’s throughout the whole book but not prominent focus after the first bit.

I found Zed to be quite a boy, he starts off scared and with a hard home life – studying – trying to deal with the religion aspect, the character evolution is just astounding

I thought Caspian was a confident boy who gets in a lot of trouble, for all that I think he’s a good kid, just wanting to find his own path in life and deal with the hand fate dealt.

This book was amazingly written and sucked me in from the start – there were hard times and good times and times you just wanted to cry for them. I didn’t want to put it down.  This book will stick with me for a while.

I liked the secondary characters, the evolution of everyone over the course of such a long time – each storyline and each outcome was well thought out and worked so well I can’t even!

A definite must read!!!!!

An Alisa Audio Review: BFF by K.C. Wells and Michael Mola (Narrator)

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

I’m about to do something huge, and it could change… everything.

I met Matt in second grade, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. We went to the same schools, studied at the same college. When we both got jobs in the same town, we shared an apartment. And when my life took an unexpected turn, Matt was there for me. Every milestone in my life, he was there to share it. And what’s really amazing? After all these years, we’re still the best of friends.

Which brings me to this fragile, heart-stopping moment: I want to tell him I love him, really love him, but I’m scared to death of what he’ll say. If I’ve got this all wrong, I’ll lose him—forever.

Oh, this was such a sweet story.  Matt and David have been best friends forever and really have been in love with each other for just about as long.  I loved been able to hear about their journey to discovering this and the life they have built together.

We get to see snippets of their lives growing up but it was the important moments that helped shape who they are.  It’s clear that these two just didn’t realize how they feel about each other until David has a major health scare.  Even though the story was told from David’s point of view he really describes Matt perfectly, it make it easy to understand and love both of these characters.

Michael Mola did a great job narrating this story.  The different voices also helped with keeping track of the story and I think they were perfect for the characters.  I could easily feel the characters emotions through the way he portrayed them.

Cover art by Reese Dante is perfect and I love the different pictures of Matt and David together.
