Dive Into the Holiday Season with Christmas Stories from RJ Scott (giveaway)

Dive Into the Holiday Season with Christmas Stories from RJ Scott

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” and I LOVE it! There’s something special about Christmas stories and as you can see, I also love writing them 🙂

In no particular order here they are:

The

Christmas

Throwaway

The Christmas Throwaway, was my first Christmas themed book.
Written as a short story for someone who was poorly in J2
fan fiction, I extended it from two thousand short words to
over forty and so Ben and Zach were created.

The book, a story of a young man thrown out of his house at
Christmas for being gay, did really surprisingly well. It
was All Romance’s best selling book of 2010 and also spent a
lot of time in the top 300 of all romance novels on Amazon.
It’s now available in Audio and has been translated into
Spanish, Italian,  French and now German. I love this little book
that could
 so much.

The Road To Frosty Hollow

I love the concept of a road trip, particularly when you fall in love on that journey. Add in two men who have known each other a very long time and this is a story written with Meredith Russell that ticks all the boxes for a Christmas Romance.

Jesse’s

Christmas

This was my second Christmas themed book and spent some
time with an old publisher before I was lucky enough
to get it back.  As soon as I got it back I doubled
it in size!
The story of someone who doesn’t really like Christmas
landing in a town that won an award for best Christmas
Town made me smile the entire time I was writing it.I couldn’t fail to love Gabriel who showed Jesse what
Christmas could be about and how it is possibleto love again.

Snow & Secrets

One of my favourite storylines in a romance book at Christmas is the idea of a snowy cabin, enforced isolation, and two men falling in love.
Snow, secrets, some danger, one hot tub, Christmas decorations, and family.

New

York Christmas

Awwww, my boys in New York.  I loved writing this book.
It started life as a J2 fanfiction twelve days of Christmas
type short story.
When I rewrote it I wanted to keep that idea of the days
before Christmas, although of course the book starts just
before Thanksgiving and ends in the New Year.
There is also
a free short story following on, available at Amber Kell’s
blog here

Snow In Montana

My newest Christmas book, the fourth story in the Montana series is a look at Justin and Adam, alongside a whole new romance between a B list actor and a Sheriff.
I love Christmas movies, and this novel is set against the March backdrop for filming *Snow In Montana* starring The King Of Christmas (TM) Jordan Darby. Meeting Ryan Carter, the local sheriff, is way too tempting for Jordan. How long can he stay in the closet?

Angel

In A Book Shop

The
story of an angel and a man set in a book shop. I mean, how
could I not enjoy writing this, it had a bookshop, a man
with wings, and an angsty sad hero. Win/Win.
It was based loosely on a short I wrote for Dreamspinner way
back in 2010 (a bit, not much really, it was supposed to but
it kind of grew like topsy and became something else).
The short story I had written was my first ever accepted
work for publishing and it HAD to be extended and become
something else.

Texas Christmas

Writing the Texas series was a labour of love, and I had to put in a Christmas story for Jack, Riley, and their extended family.

There is of course drama with the Campbell-Hayes, including a terrifying car trip home with the Christmas Tree. Add in the boy’s new family and this ends up being a very interesting Christmas for them all.

The

Case Of The Sinful Santa

End Street Detective Agency Book 4, written with Amber
Kell

How could we not explore the idea of a Klaus family in this
series of books featuring vampires, demons, angels, dragons
and one kind of human, along with a cast of many other
paranormals?

In this book we explored what it must be like born into the
Klaus family but not wanting to be a Santa… And and of
course, we introduced our very own Angel just to shake
things up.

Christmas

in the Sun

The Sapphire Cay series comes to an end with book 6.

I have loved writing this series with my very close friend
Meredith Russell and we had to give the boys a Christmas
book in 2013.

We bought back a wedding planner with OCD decorating
tendencies and his sexy Marine, Lucas and Dylan and a stray
dog, and gave all of our boys a Christmas Day they wouldn’t
forget.

The

Journal Of Sanctuary One

(Sanctuary book 6)

Jake and Sean, with their love/hate relationship stuck in a
cabin in the middle of nowhere for Christmas. Of course the
Bullen storyline features but mostly this is me ticking ALL
of my Christmas boxes.

Two men, a cabin, stranded, anger, hate, love, sex and
gratuitous use of a running machine. Sighs. I loved writing
this book.

Deefur

and the Mistletoe Incident

A free short story Christmas gift

This was part of a huge Christmas Anthology that I pulled
together in 2013 featuring some 25 new authors. It is the sequel to Deefur The Dog, featuring a Manny, a widower, a sweet child, and of course a Great Dane called Deefur.

This year it is being published with it’s own cover and wont
cost you a penny!

Texas

Winter (Texas #2)

The book that was never supposed to be written…  Did
you know The Heart Of Texas was supposed to be a stand alone?
ROFL… I couldn’t leave it though and so Texas winter was
born.

Snow doesn’t fall a lot in Texas but this story centers
around a freak one-day snowfall. Add in a daughter Riley
didn’t know he had and the Campbell-Hayes have their first
real Christmas.

The

Party – A blog story from six authors

Written in 2012… Henry and Jack had thought
nothing could ever drive them apart. They were wrong. Three
months have passed since Jack had walked out of the home
they shared, and Henry had been too stupid to take back the
hurtful things he’d said.

Both assured by their respective parents that the other
would not be present at Henry’s mother’s annual Christmas
gathering, they attend. Finding they have been duped into
seeing each other, Henry realizes that this may be his only
chance to try and make things right. But will he be able to
convince Jack to come home?

First of all, thank you to all who sent in entries to our first ever STRW Flash Fiction Writing Month.  We appreciate your participation and all entries will be showcased here.  Putting your thoughts and emotions into words and a story can be one of the more daunting challenges you can attempt.  We are doubly grateful for those that chose to do so and submitted them here.

Flash Fiction or micro stories are supposed to do what all stories do but in a condensed version. Make us think, move us, connect us to the characters, their loves, lives and worlds. All the stories we received did that beautifully.  One made us laugh, several made us sob, one made us shout in recognition of the tumultuous events moved into the realm of science fiction, and and others?  Just moving, imaginative and wonderful in their ability to pull at the heart and mind. Here are the stories in the order they were received.  Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words cannot thanks these authors enough for their contributions.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words would like to welcome Francis Gideon here today to talk about their latest release, The Santa Hoax.  Welcome, Francis!

~

Hello everyone! My YA holiday romance The Santa Hoax came out with Harmony Ink Press on December 1st. The story contains several trans characters, including protagonist Julian, and documents some topical trans issues. Though I wrote the first draft of this book in the fall of 2013, the topics I covered seem more relevant than ever.

The story documents Julian’s coming out as he tells people about his identity. As I’ve talked about in other blog posts during this tour, coming out is never simple and often needs to happen more than once. Trans people in particular need to deal with the reality of depending on other people to get their names and pronouns right. Julian suffers with this–at first because he doesn’t tell anyone he’s trans–and then when he deals with transphobia. There’s not *too* much transphobic language in the story (because at its core, it’s really a sweet holiday romance that just happens to be about a trans guy), but the one thing that I wanted to focus on was the infamous bathroom problem.

Enough people here probably remember the bill H2 in North Carolina and how upset it made the trans community. If not, here’s a brief article on its history and what happened. The bathroom problem is something that’s followed trans people around for ages. If you’re trans, what bathroom do you use, and what will people say when you’re in that bathroom? The common theme in most of these debates is that trans women will come into women’s bathroom and attack other women (except that the opposite in real life is usually true). In Julian’s case, he’s a trans guy and only fifteen, so the same fear or judgement doesn’t exactly apply to him, but he’s still threatened and punished in some way for using the bathroom (I don’t want to give too much away about how/why/who) and this makes Julian, along with his friends, seek some kind of resolution and justice. In the story, I created a fake politician in Toronto (where the story is set) who made a similar ruling like North Carolina’s case, and a social media uprising from trans people that rallied against it.

Even though my take on this issue is fictional, there are far too many real-life examples of this kind of systemic transphobia. Even in Canada, yes. I know that Canada is often held up as the pinnacle of all things diverse, especially now after the US election, but we have diversity issues. Everywhere has diversity issues. The world doesn’t seem like it’s made for people who are different–so I’ve always seen my job as a writer to imagine something better. So while I talk a lot about transphobia in this post and it seems like a general downer, I assure you–the book has a happy ending. It’s also about falling in love and being a secret Santa and learning about your friends in a way that is healthy and safe and fun. I’ve included one of the happier holiday scenes of Julian and his friends looking at Christmas lights as an excerpt, so my post isn’t a total bummer. 😉

The Santa Hoax was a joy to write, so I hope it’s a joy to read. Thank you!

Book Blurb

When Julian Gibson realizes he’s transgender, he doesn’t think anything has to change. His parents and friends still call him Julia and think he’s a girl, but so long as Julian can still hang out with his best friend Aiden and read sci-fi novels with his dad, life seems pretty good.

Then high school happens. Aiden ditches him, and a new girl, Maria, keeps cornering him in the girls’ bathroom. A full year after discovering he’s transgender, Julian realizes life changes whether you’re ready for it or not. So Julian makes a deal with himself: if he can tell his secret to three people, it is no longer a hoax. What happens during his slow process of coming out leads Julian down odd pathways of friendship, romance, Christmas shopping, random parties, bad movies, and a realization about why kids still believe in Santa—it’s sometimes better than discovering the truth.

“There you are!” Maria said, eagerly greeting him.

She wore jeggings that clung to her thighs and waist, along with a white coat Julian hadn’t seen before. Josie hung around at her side, wearing pretty much the exact same thing she had earlier, looking up from her phone every so often to verify where they were. She has GPS. How adorable. Davis was by her side, his baseball hat pulled down over his face. The collar of his dark jacket was flipped up in the slight wind and obscured his face.

“Sorry if I’m late,” Julian apologized. “Had to say good-bye to my dad.”

“Nah, you’re fine. Just on time.” Maria linked her arm with Julian’s as they moved toward the sidewalk. “Where are we going now, Josie?”

“Just to the left,” she said, then leaned close to Julian and whispered so only he could hear. “Davis is driving me crazy already. Help.”

“Just focus on the lights,” he said. “And maybe think of drawing a comic or two.”

“Come on,” Maria stated, keeping Julian’s attention on her. “Show me some houses.”

Josie walked ahead of the two of them, Davis by her side. They continued down the block two by two as the sun sank behind the trees. The chill set in almost immediately after, and though the wind whipped at their faces and blew Maria’s hair, she never once complained about being cold. Julian had no idea what he was supposed to do if she was. Do I give her my coat? That was what guys on dates did. But if this was a date—not that it was—then Maria probably saw him as a girl. So Julian was doubly confused and decided to not think about it at all. He pulled the group over into the next subdivision, where they were almost blinded by the first house they saw. Lights lined the roof, crisscrossing and in several different Christmas colors. There were also a few light-up Santas, snowmen, and Christmas stars hanging by the garage.

“Oh, wow. It’s like walking on the surface of the sun,” Josie exclaimed, using a hand to block some of the light.

“Total Griswolds,” Maria commented. “Like that movie Christmas Vacation, you know?”

“Yeah, I guess. Just like that.”

“Their electricity bills must be through the roof,” Josie stated. “No wonder there is global warming.”

“If there is, why is it still so cold?” Davis asked, rubbing his hands together.

Josie began to explain, only getting through a few complex statements before Davis put his hands up. “Okay, fine, fine. I’m wrong. I get it.”

Maria rolled her eyes and then tugged Julian forward. “So is this a house you like? You strike me as someone more subtle.”

“Yeah,” Julian said, grinning. “I walk around a lot, actually. Let me show you a better house.”

After a small walk, Julian stopped them in front of Mr. Stevenson’s house. His blue icicle lights hung over the garage and by his front windows. He also had a floodlight that displayed a small silhouette of a snowman on his garage.

“Okay,” Maria said. “Why do you like this one?”

“It’s not too garish, or even that Christmas or religious oriented.”

“And?” Maria asked, nudging him. “You’re holding out on me.”

“Well, if you think about it, this time of year is really about light, right? All the holidays celebrate light because it’s the darkest time.”

Everyone nodded, so Julian went on. “And this house is usually dark most of the time. Mr. Stevenson used to work at my elementary school, actually. He was the music teacher, but he got sick, and his kids have to take care of him now. But they still put up his lights, and I really like that. I don’t know. The whole thing reminds me of learning to play an instrument in his class. Probably dumb.”

“No, no,” Maria said, squeezing his arm. “Not dumb. What did you play?”

“Piano. I was never that good, though.”

“You probably were, but you’re just shy now. That’s okay,” Maria said, her eyes going back to the house. “I can appreciate this.”

Julian nodded. He wanted to add more about how he had first started playing, but realizing that would involve Aiden, he cut off the thought before it had a chance to catch hold. When Julian heard clicking from a phone, he turned to see Davis in the middle of writing a message, not even listening to what he had just said. That was okay, really. Julian hadn’t really been talking to Davis when he told the story. But as he looked back to find Josie, she was already across the street, taking a picture of a rabbit in the bushes. It had been Maria, and only Maria, who was listening intently to him. When he glanced back over to her, he found her staring at him.

“What?” he asked.

“Nothing,” she said, smiling softly. “Just thanks for telling me. I wouldn’t have known any of that without you.”

“I got a million stories.”

“I’ll bet,” Maria said, then looked past him toward Josie with a sigh. “But we should probably catch up with the group. And I think this street is a dead end, right?”

An Ali Review: Painting with Fire (Survivors Find Love #1) by Lissa Kasey

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Charlie and Bastian discover a spark of smoldering fire igniting between them, but Charlie is unwilling to push and Bastian hesitant to trust.

They will have to wade through pain, hate, and fear to find their future together.
This was a lovely story about two unlikely men falling in love.  When Charlie and Jessie go back to her home town they end up stating with Bastian.  Bastian is younger and is a doll maker for a living.  He has had an abusive past with his family and he’s very lonely and fragile.  The two men are immediately attracted to each other and their relationship is a slow bloom kind of thing.  Bastian has some emotional issues he needs to work through and Charlie has the patience to take the time to work through them with him.  I enjoyed watching these two fall in love and I liked them as a couple.
I found Bastian’s job really interesting and something I’ve never read in a romance story before.  I felt the author did a good job showing us what this profession entails and also uses it to show us facets of Bastien’s personality.  I also felt the atmosphere was set well.  It was easy to image the town and Bastian’s home.
Overall I really enjoyed this.  The main plot was a classic hurt/comfort trope but the author added in enough different things (such as Bastian’s job) to make it feel like a unique story.  This is a story I would recommend and I will be looking forward to more books in this series.
The cover art is nice enough but does not really stand out to me.

The World’s an Island by Lissa Kasey

In August my family erupted. I was working on Model Investigator, and fighting to finish it through depression and outrage. When it was done I decided I needed something a little cathartic. I wanted to write a story that laid out some of my family history but had a positive ending. It would be my first ever contemporary romance. However, like a lot of my stories, I wanted to create a separate space just for these characters. Instead of putting them on another planet or an alternate world, I decided to put them on a reclusive island I hadn’t known existed until I inquired of a friend for ideas—the San Juan islands in Washington.

Maybe it’s just because I’m a Midwesterner that I didn’t know these islands existed. I’ve never been to that corner of the country, so I was a little surprised by the happy little secret of these islands filled with lavender, alpacas, and state parks. Of course they are islands for the rich now as home prices are in the millions. But I thought, why not? Why not create a little community in the real world for my survivors to live, heal, and find love?

After some research, I decided on Friday Harbor as my location. This appears to be one of the largest and easiest to access islands of the bunch. There’s a town with a hospital, an airport, and a huge state park overlooking the Olympic Mountains. There’s also an alpaca farm and fields of lavender.

There is a state ferry that travels back and forth all day long from the mainland to the islands. Research included looking at traffic cams, searching real estate sites, reviewing maps, and checking out the websites for the island, the fire fighters and police departments of the island, and the farms. Here’s the main website for Friday Harbor: http://www.fridayharbor.com/.

It’s a popular place to get married, spend the day exploring the island, or even summer months hiking in the state park. Sadly, I have not yet been to the island. Though I do plan a trip in the near future.

What I found most appealing about these islands other than being mostly unknown, is that instead of being a tropical getaway for people who want to lay on beaches and drink alcohol, it seems to be a place of quiet exploration, and a slow down of the fast pace we often find ourselves in when on vacation or even just living life. This, to me, felt like the perfect place for my characters to heal.

What would be your ideal place to travel? Do you like to rush around on vacation or just relax? Have you ever been to a secret hideaway like this? Some place unknown to the average individual, maybe even underrated, but beautiful?

Excerpt

Bastian was waiting for him. He was dressed in fitted blue jeans and a thick zip up sweater. His shoes were heavy black leather. Charlie nodded. “Ready?”

“Yes,” Bastian said. “And no. I’m terrified. I’ve never been on a motorcycle before.”

Charlie led him out to the bike, retrieved the helmets from the lockbox in the back of the truck and helped Bastian put on his. He left the visor up and put on his own. “Once I’m on, I want you to swing your legs around it up behind me. Close. Especially since this is your first ride. Your feet go here.” He motioned to the foot rest. “The shield keeps most of the bugs from splattering on us, but if we go really fast you’ll need to wash your clothes when we’re done.”

Bastian’s eyes widened. Charlie grinned since he was teasing, flicked his visor down and swung onto the bike. Bastian hesitated for a moment, like he wasn’t sure he could do it. Then he carefully climbed on behind Charlie. Charlie steadied the bike and turned it on, giving it a minute for the blue tooth to link up. Then he glanced back to see Bastian nervously watching his feet.

“Slide forward,” Charlie told him. “Put your arms around my waist. I won’t let you fall. We’ll start slow, I promise.”

Bastian slid forward. He carefully wrapped his arms around Charlie’s waist, but his grip was loose. Charlie kicked the bike up, it rolled a few feet, and suddenly Bastian was holding on for dear life. Charlie grinned as he eased them down Bastian’s drive, out the gate, and to the main road, keeping their speed just under thirty miles an hour.

Once they hit the long stretch of lavender fields, Charlie pushed the speed up to fifty. Still below the limit, but enough to have Bastian clinging to him and laughing with excitement and joy. Charlie loved the sound. He had to admit he was attracted to Bastian. Not so much how he looked, though he was adorable, but his amazing heart and endurance. Charlie hoped they could at least become friends. As a man who spent most of his life in the field, he didn’t have enough of those outside the job.

Charlie eased the bike down so they could turn around. The sky was darkening.

“There’s a side road not far up that takes us along the coast,” Bastian said.

“Yeah? Let me know where it is and we’ll take a ride that way.”

“Okay.” Bastian rested his head against Charlie’s shoulder. Once they reached the turn off, Charlie turned on the side road, happy it was paved and in good condition. It wasn’t a long road, but the view was spectacular. Charlie pulled over into a small dirt overlook and took off his helmet. The sun was setting and it was spectacular.

“Wow,” Charlie breathed.

Bastian took off his helmet too. “Nothing else matches the colors. Some say it’s the pollen from the lavender that makes sunsets and rises here so colorful. Others say it’s the mix of cold air from the mountains and the warmth of the water.” He didn’t let go of Charlie; his body heat warmed Charlie. They watched in silence as the sun set. Final traces of the sun’s glow vanishing into a dark blue night. Stars appeared in the thousands.

“No wonder you create such beautiful things with this inspiring view to fuel your muse,” Charlie remarked.

Excerpt #4

The guy peered above Nate’s shoulder, his arm still curled around Nate’s waist protectively. Quinn’s stare zeroed in on the fingers fanned out on Nate’s stomach, and primal jealousy erupted strong and hot in his gut.

“Nate,” Brandon said, standing up and stepping in front of Quinn, shielding him from view.  “Wanna get dressed and come out here? We need to talk.”

Nate’s lips curved into a cruel smile. “Nah. I’m good.” He entwined his fingers with the ones on his stomach, turned his head around and gave the guy a sweet, lingering kiss.

“Nate…” There was a warning in Brandon’s voice, but Nate didn’t pay him any heed. He dragged the guy into his bedroom and slammed the door behind them.

“Fucking immature asshole,” Brandon muttered as he stalked into the direction of Nate’s bedroom. He walked in without knocking, completely ignoring the shouting that came from inside.

Quinn dropped his face into his hands. Confused, hurt, and utterly miserable, he contemplated getting up, going out the door and never coming back. The past should stay buried, right? There was nothing keeping him in Chicago anymore. He’d graduated, Kai was gone… The world was his oyster. He could do anything he wanted, go anywhere he liked.

And yet… The only place he wanted to be was where Nate was.

Quinn could hear shouting coming from the bedroom, but his head was pounding and he couldn’t focus enough to get exactly what was said. He could guess that Brandon was ripping into his brother and, the stubborn hothead Nate was. he wasn’t budging an inch.

That could go for a while.

Surprisingly, Brandon stormed out of the room a moment later, his frown making him seem much older than his twenty four years.

“He’ll be right out,” he declared, storming into the kitchen and opening the fridge with more force than necessary, rattling the contents inside.

EXCERPT

Nate could hear the cruelty in his tone but he didn’t care. He’d never been this angry in his life, and if Quinn wasn’t here to face the mess he’d caused, Nate was going to use the next best thing – the traitor who’d chosen him over his own brother.

“I didn’t know any of that,” Brandon said, his eyes softening. He reached for Nate, but Nate whipped his hand away, taking a step back.

“Don’t fucking touch me!”

Angry tears prickled behind his eyes, making him feel humiliated even more. Spinning around on his heel, he ignored Brandon’s voice calling him back and stomped into to his room, slamming the door.

He didn’t make it to the bed. The anger, grief, and loss he’d felt overwhelmed him and Nate slumped to the floor, a ragged sob tearing out of his throat.

I hope one day you can forgive me…

Not a chance in fucking hell.

About the Author

Hi, my name is Teodora and I live in London with my husband and my son. I’ve been writing ever since I can remember, but it became my full time job a few years ago when I decided that everything else I’ve tried bores me to death and I have to do what I’ve always wanted to do, but never had the guts to fully embrace. I’ve been a journalist, an editor, a personal assistant and an interior designer among other things, but as soon as the novelty of the new, exciting job wears off, I always go back to writing. Being twitchy, impatient, loud and hasty are not qualities that help a writer, because I have to sit alone, preferably still, and write for most of the day, but I absolutely love it. It’s the only time that I’m truly at peace and the only thing I can do for more than ten minutes at a time – my son has a bigger attention span than me.

When I’m procrastinating, I like to go to the gym, cook Italian meals (and eat them), read, listen to rock music, watch indie movies and True Blood re-runs. Or, in the worst case scenario, get beaten at every Nintendo Wii game by a very inventive kid.

Don’t be shy and get in touch – I love connecting with my readers.

A Paul B Review: Enemy of My Enemy (The Executive Office #2) by Tal Bauer

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

enemy-of-my-enemy-by-tal-bauerI feel like I just binge watched a season of 24.

Tal Bauer’s second book in The Executive Office series starts out shortly after the first book left off.  President Jack Spiers, having survived a coup attempt by former General Porter Madigan, is looking to a return to normalcy.  That includes selecting a new Vice President and starting his life with Ethan Reichenbach, the former lead agent on his Secret Service detail.  Ethan, meanwhile, must adapt to his new role as First Gentleman, dealing with issues such as White House flowers and china patterns.  However, those are not the only duties the new First Gentleman will undertake.

Jack wants Madigan eliminated.  The former general has been leaving calling cards for the President as he breaks out the worst prisoners from several jails around the world.  Always seeming to be at least one step behind, Jack develops a black ops mission with Ethan in charge.  Their mission is to hunt down and kill Madigan.  However, they will find Madigan’s reach extends far beyond just the United States.

Russian President Sergey Puckkov has his own problems.  The Russian economy tanks after Puchkov has several people arrested for corruption.  In the new spirit of cooperation, Jack offers to help the Russian president.  This draws the ire of General Moroshkin of the Russian Army.  He believes that Puchkov is becoming too friendly with America and something must be done about it.

So Madigan and Moroshkin join forces to take out their respective enemies.  Through a series of terrorist attacks, they have Jack and Sergey on their heels.  During a meeting between the two leaders in Sochi, Moroshkin makes his move staging his own coup against Puchkin.  Jack and Ethan barely escape but are surprised to find someone waiting for them at Olympic Stadium while they wait to be evacuated.  Sergey and his aid Sasha are determined to stay behind and fight the coup or die trying.

Enemy of My Enemy is just as action packed as Enemies of the State.   In that book, Jack believes he lost Ethan due to events out of his control.  This time, it is Ethan who believes he has lost Jack—not once but twice.  When the surprise that Madigan leaves for Jack in Sochi is revealed, Ethan decides he has to step away while Jack deals with the problem.  Then later an explosion threatens Jack’s life once again.  We also see a renewed romance between Adam Cooper, the leader of Ethan’s black ops team and Prince Faisel of Saudi Arabia and the unrequited love of Sasha for President Puchkin.  The book ends way too soon as we must wait for the next book to see what becomes of our six heroes and if Madigan and Moroshkin are brought to justice.

Natasha Snow delivers an excellent cover for the book.  It has our six warriors above the image of the White House.  It is a simple perfect cover for the book.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Catching Heir by Julia Talbot

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

catching-heir-by-julia-talbotIs he in love with an old hotel—or its new owner?

Professional snowboarder Cullen Patrick is successful and kinda famous. So when he inherits an old Colorado hotel from an unknown relative, he really should leave well enough alone.

Matt Nathanson has been managing the Treeline Estates since college. He loved the elderly former owner, and he stands to inherit the place if no one claims it in the next week. Of course, Cullen shows up, and Matt thinks it’s time to move on. He doesn’t want to like Cullen, no matter how engaging the guy is, or how hunky.

Cullen has grand ideas for the Treeline, but he doesn’t want to implement them without Matt, and he’s not sure he’s ready to give up snowboarding. Can Matt convince Cullen that putting down roots is worth it… and maybe catch his heir at the same time?

I throughly enjoyed Julia Talbot’s Catching Heir, another contemporary romance in Dreamspinner Press’ Dreamspun Desires series.  It follows a storyline of the lost inheritance and the found heir.  Someone is about to inherit a …fill in person’s heart’s desire…home, ranch, palace estate…you name it and then up pop’s the long lost heir to take it  back.  In this case its a beautiful old hotel, a  grand dame of hotels that Matt Nathanson stands to inherit in 24 hours if no heir arrives to claim it.  But of course, one does in the person of Cullen Patrick, grandson of who owned and loved Treeline Estates dearly and who recently died.

Part of this review is hard to write because as much as I adored the story, its what’s missing about it that nags at me and makes me wonder about those parts I feel are left out.  I really like these characters, Matt especially.  You get the feeling he’s been caught in a time warp of his making and that of Ben Patrick, Cullen’s grandfather.   Ben plucked Matt right out of college and brought him to the Treeline as a young man, a hotel filled with 60 somethings and a owner who dwelled in the past.  You certainly get a wonderful feel for this character immediately.

Cullen too fits that snowboarder image and extreme sports athlete although I wish he had a bit more layering to him.  He needed more a past to match that of Matt,   although they make a great couple.  I like how the author moves him from immediate jerk status to one to comes to appreciate Matt and the hotel.  That’s lovely.  Plus its great to watch the slow process of Cullen easing Matt out of the closed in life he’s lead all these years at the hotel as their romance deepens.

But you know who’s missing?  Ben Patrick..the dead man at the heart of the hotel, staff and who was Matt’s best friend and mentor.  I really needed to get a feel for him and that hole haunts this story, much like his empty room Matt refuses to enter.  We don’t know anything about their relationship all those years, not even a memory.  He’s a ghost that pulls this story down by his absence.

Talbot has given Matt and Cullen a wonderful secondary cast with the hotel staff.  We get a feel of what it is to run something like that as well as set up a snowboard run, all of which was interesting and well folded into the story.  It also helped to authenticate both men and made them believable.  There was a side thread that was less so but it was a flash and then it was dropped.

All in all, a sweet, contemporary romance and another terrific addition in this series.

I recommend it, let that cover pull you in.  Its a perfect representation of Cullen, perfectly adorable.

Cover art by Paul Richmond does a wonderful job once more.

A Caryn Release Day Review: The Santa Hoax by Francis Gideon

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

the-santa-hoaxOne of my favorite things about reading – as opposed to watching TV or movies – is that although an author can give me details about a character’s physical appearance, I can take those details and create a person in my mind who looks, sounds, and moves in the way that seems right to me to fit in the story.  It’s usually a shock to see that same character portrayed by a specific actor/actress, because they are never what I imagined myself.

And that’s what I was thinking about as I read this story about Julian, a trans boy who has just started high school.  His image of himself is never what he sees in the mirror, or in pictures, or in how other people look at him.  If the disconnect is so surprising to me when comparing an imaginary character with an actor portraying that same imaginary character, what must it be like to feel that about yourself?  Every day?  What must it be like to have people call you by a name that is not yours?

Julian Gibson is 14, and just entering high school in Toronto, Canada.  He has felt like a boy since he was old enough to know the difference between boys and girls, but he has only found the words for it in the past few years.  He hasn’t told anyone that he is a boy, and of course is afraid of how they will react.  As he and all the kids around him are entering or moving through puberty, he feels that disconnect between who he is and who he looks like much more acutely, and every day it causes him more distress.  He’s always been the quiet, bookish type, very intelligent, but living more inside his head than anywhere else, and high school is the time when he truly realizes that he will need to learn how to interact with the outside world.  If he doesn’t define himself, others will do it for him, and they will never know who he really is.  He decides that if he can just tell 3 people, that it will become real – yes, he is aware that he’s a little like Pinocchio wanting to be “a real boy” – and now he just needs to find a way to do that.

Those were all the things I loved about the story.  The premise is interesting, the description of Julian’s inner world and the discordance with what happens on the outside is exceptionally well done.  But the plot, well, it’s kind of meh.  I was so frustrated that the conflict is all within Julian’s mind.  When he does start to slowly come out, there was no negativity from others at all.  None, zip, nada.  Everyone not only is supportive, but they also know exactly how to be supportive.  No issues with forgetting to use the correct pronouns, no awkward interactions while reconciling Julian with Julia, and not even any questions like “how does that feel?”  Julian’s girlfriend, who mostly identifies as lesbian, basically just says OK when Julian explains how important it is that she thinks of them as a straight couple, and immediately he is her boyfriend, and that’s that.

The only external conflict had to do with gender specific bathrooms.  Really?  I know that North Carolina made a big deal about that, and the far right continues to make a big deal about it, but I personally think there are many more important discrimination issues facing transgender people.  I say this as a heterosexual, cis-woman, so of course I could be wrong, but I thought the focus on the bathroom issue was disingenuous at best, and a cop-out at worst.

Overall, the book fell short of what I hoped it would be, but it at least made me think more about the internal conflict that any transgender person must feel as they grow up and come to terms with their identity.  And I would definitely want to read a story with transgender teens again in the future.

Cover art, by Alexandria Corza, is also pretty meh.

Scotty Cade on Writing and His Latest Release ‘Only Forever’ (Guest Author Interview)

Only Forever by Scotty Cade
D
reamspinner Press

onlyforever400x600

Master Captain Theodore Gourdin has always loved the ocean.   But his devotion to maritime life left little possibility for a long-term relationship. After two failed marriages and numerous unsuccessful relationships, Theo gave up on finding the person who completed him and decided the sea was his soul mate. When offered the opportunity to captain the newly launched megayacht Eternity, Theo jumped at the chance. With Eternity’s maiden voyage looming, Theo focused all his energies on hiring his crew and readying his ship. The last thing he expected was to finally lose his heart in the process.

After twelve years at sea, First Officer Heath Rawlins was restless and in need of a change. A gay seaman’s life could be a lonely one, but to Heath the positives far outweighed the negatives. With excellent recommendations and an impressive résumé, he was quickly offered a position on the private megayacht Eternity. Heath’s heart skipped several beats when he finally met the ship’s captain. He was handsome and charming. And… familiar? Had they met somewhere before? Highly unlikely. But as smitten as Heath was with the gorgeous captain, everything inside him screamed, Abandon ship! Rough seas ahead!

~

Hi Kids,

scottycadeScotty Cade here. First off I’d like to thank Melanie and everyone over at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for giving me the opportunity to be with you again. I love giving you a sneak peak into my latest books and offer you a little insight into my world of creativity. I hope you enjoy this interview and as always feel free to leave a comment or drop me a line if you have any additional questions. Oh and I almost forgot—read on for an excerpt and a chance to win an eBook.

Here we go:

From where did the inspiration for “Only Forever” come? A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

Actually all of the above. I’m almost certain it has happened to you as well, but a few times in my life I have met a person that I feel a very strong connection to. It doesn’t have to be romantic, although it can be, but the bond is almost instant. I believe that I have known that person before. We are old souls reconnecting. Am I experiencing a memory? Absolutely. Is it a former place or journey? I say hell yeah. Is it personal? Without a doubt. Without getting all Zen on you, I’m a firm believer that our life here on earth is just one stop along the way in our spiritual journey.

When writing this story, were you a planner or a pantzer? And why?

I’m usually a planner. I’m somewhat OCD and all my ducks need to be in a row for me to relax and clear my head, so I plan my work and work my plan. Now that doesn’t mean my stories always turns out the way I’d planned. Many don’t, but that’s how it starts out. For this book, it came to me so fast I had no time to plan. I sat at my computer and started typing. It’s short of a novel at just under fifty thousand words, but that’s because it wasn’t planned. When I typed “The End,” I could have gone back and added a few more chapters, but it just didn’t feel right. It was Heath and Theo’s story and they deserved it to be without distractions or other useless fluff that might add words but nothing to the story.

Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?

Where writing is concerned, contemporary romance mixed with a little mystery is my favorite to write. The romantic mysteries are not my best sellers by far, but I so enjoy plotting them. My easy romance novels are the best sellers. The novels that deal with overcoming struggles, etc. are always a hit. I love writing them as well, but almost everything has been done at one time or another. Over and over again. So finding a way to add a new twist is hard. For the record, I hate angst. Especially in the way of cheating boyfriends or husbands so I normally avoid angst. If the story requires it, I add some, but its usually resolved pretty quickly. When it comes to reading, I love when love crosses boundaries. When people just fall in love with a person, not a sex. Its been referred to as “Gay for You,” so much it makes me cringe. I hate that term, but it is what it is. On the other hand, I believe people are born sexual and society most times determines who we’re supposed to love. It always seems so taboo when a supposed straight man is attracted to another man and I love when love or attraction win. Anyway I digress. But I love reading those stories the most.

If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now, at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?

I don’t think I would change one single character of miner. Between you and me, all of my characters, at one time or another, have been criticized harshly. They are either too sweet, too mean, too nice, too handsome, too smart, too insecure, too cocky, etc. You get my drift. Every character strikes a cord with a reader for one reason or another in a negative or positive way, but each of my characters are who they are. They called to me and I wrote about them and that’s that.

Can an author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

Wow! That’s a tough one. I LOVE all my characters but I connect more with the ones searching for something. For instance, “Losing Faith,” brings too characters together who are both searching for different things. But they help each other find what they need and find each other in the process. That to me is the ultimate. When I started that story I had no idea how it was going to end because I didn’t want it to be a cliché. I didn’t want them to fall in love because it had to be a novel with a HEA. I wanted them to either truly fall in love or become best of friends. Luckily for them, they fell in love and completed their worlds.

If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

It would sort of depend on where I was and my mood. If I were stuck at LaGuardia, I would be so royally pissed I’d read an SJD Peterson novel. She’s always so edgy and provides a good way to relieve frustration. If I were on a beautiful island or a planet, probably Maris Black. I especially loved “Owing Corey.”

How early in your life did you begin writing?

In my career I was the SVP of Marketing and Public Relations for a large publicly traded company based in Atlanta GA. In that job I wrote constantly. Marketing pieces, ads, commercials, annual reports, branding guidelines, etc. but I didn’t start writing fiction until about seven years ago. My husband Kell and own and Inn & Restaurant on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. We normally head south for the winters, but one particular winter we decided to stay. It was so boring and cold that I had to do something with a distraction. So I started writing a book. I always said everyone has on good book in them so why not write mine. It took the entire winter, but after I finished it I gave it to a couple friends to read and they both suggested I send it to a few publishers. I guess I was one of the lucky ones, because out of three publishers I chose, two wanted the book. I of course chose Dreamspinner Press, which is my only home and I’m thrilled to have them represent me.

Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

I was a very late bloomer when it came to reading. As a kid I read what was absolutely required for school, but I was way more into music. With that said, the first book I can remember reading that stayed with me and still does is “The Scarlet Ibis,” by James Hurst. It is the tale of two brothers and written in first person by one of the brothers whose name is never mentioned, but only referred to as “Brother.” He recounts the life of he and his little brother who was nicknamed Doodle. Doodle was born very sickly and was never expected to live past infancy, or sit up or crawl or even walk for fear of his weak heart stopping. But he does. After one horrible scene the brothers bond and “Brother” vows to help Doodle be a normal kid. One day, a big red bird appears in their garden, looking sick and tired. The boys’ father identifies it as a scarlet ibis, a tropical bird that was blown off-course by a recent storm. When the bird dies, Doodle, pitying the creature, buries it. The story has been described as “rich in symbolism.” The Scarlet Ibis is the main symbol in the story, as is the color red and the ibis in comparison to “Doodle” as fragile yet majestic. The storm is often compared to Doodle’s brother because the brother pushed him too hard, much as the storm did with the scarlet ibis. In the end Doodle does not survive and “Brother” finds his lifeless body lying on the ground with blood flowing out of his mouth, staining his throat and shirt a brilliant red. Doodle died like the scarlet ibis: bloody red and far away from home. Recalling this story still send chills up and down my spine. If you haven’t read this book, please do.

Okay so you’ve read what makes me tick, so now tell me what makes you tick. If you’ve had an experience connecting with someone like Heath and Theo, tell me about in the form of a comment. If you do, you will be entered into a drawing to win any book from my backlist.

Now here’s an excerpt. Enjoy!

Excerpt:

Theo and Heath met the crew in the formal dining room, where the chef had set up an appetizing spread. Theo had told Heath he’d requested a buffet because he didn’t want anyone serving anyone else tonight. There would be plenty of time for that later. Tonight was all about coming together as a crew, and Heath was pleased that Theo wanted everyone to be equal and on the same playing field.

When dinner was over, Theo brought everyone out onto the bow. He retrieved the two bottles of Dom from a canvas bag and handed the bag to Heath. From it, Heath handed everyone a champagne flute while Theo popped the top on one of the bottles. When everyone had a full glass of champagne, Theo dug into the bag and retrieved the other bottle.

“To a great journey, a great ship, and a great crew.” Theo looked at Heath. “To borrow a line from our very capable first officer, I wish us all fair winds and following seas. I hereby bring this ship and this crew together as one.”

Theo slammed the bottle against the hull, and everyone cheered and sipped their champagne. When things had settled a little bit, Heath knocked his pocketknife against his glass. Everyone quieted, and he spoke. “The Captain and I asked that you be in full dress uniforms tonight for this very special occasion, but let me assure you that unless we have guests on board, we will be a lot less formal.”

“Thank goodness,” Craig interrupted, pulling at his collar.

Everyone laughed.

“Cliff?” Heath asked when all was quiet again. “Do you have that package I shipped?”

“Yes, sir. Right here.”

Heath looked at Theo, who seemed to be intrigued.

“I took the liberty of ordering some casual everyday attire for the crew.”

Heath ripped open the box and pulled out a pair of teal-green shorts and a white T-shirt that had Eternity running up and down the left front of the shirt.

Theo smiled and nodded. “Nice job.”

“There are various sizes for everyone,” Heath continued. “And Georgia, there are women’s sizes in there as well.”

“Thank you,” she replied.

“I want you all to look sharp every day, but more importantly, feel comfortable while doing it.”

The ship’s crew applauded, and Heath felt a blush coming on.

“I think it’s time for a few pictures.”

Theo positioned his iPhone on the bulwark, set the timer, and ran back and stood next to Heath, draping his arm over Heath’s shoulder. When the flash went off, Heath was smiling broadly, and he hoped the camera captured this very special moment.

Georgia stepped out of the group. “Okay, let me get a shot of our captain and first officer.”

The other crewmembers parted, and Theo and Heath were left standing side by side, Theo’s arm still hung loosely over Heath’s shoulder. Heath turned to Theo and their eyes met briefly. Both their smiles broadened. Theo held Heath’s gaze until Heath turned to the camera and Theo followed his lead.

It was very late. The ship was quiet, the celebration long over. But there was no sleep for Theo. Much to his chagrin, Heath was sleeping peacefully, his breaths steady and sure. The rhythmic sounds were familiar, soothing, and reassuring, but instead of luring him into slumber, they seemed to tease and taunt him.

He’d tossed and turned for the better part of two hours and had finally given up, resigned that it would indeed be a very long night. In the darkness of their cabin, Theo reached for his phone and brought up the camera roll of the evening’s pictures. He studied the pictures one by one, from the beginning of the evening to the end. His crew seemed genuinely happy and excited about their new adventure, and as he scrolled through them, he stopped and gasped. On his phone was a photo of him and Heath. They were standing very close to one another, and Theo’s arm was draped over Heath’s shoulder. They were gazing into each other’s eyes and smiling broadly.

Theo studied the picture for a long time. He remembered posing with Heath for a similar picture. The next shot was the one he remembered. He slid his finger back and stared at the other picture again. Georgia must have snapped this one before they were looking at the camera. And the look on Theo’s face as he gazed into Heath’s eyes was undeniable. He knew it, and anyone who looked at this photo would know it as well. The thing that caught his attention, even more than his expression, was the expression on Heath’s face. He was looking at Theo the same way. He could only describe it as adoringly, with an indisputable twinkle in his eye. Was it just first officer admiration of his captain, or was it more? It looked like more to Theo, but he might be wishing for something that just wasn’t there. Either way, he saved the photo to a private file and deleted it from his camera roll. This one he would keep.

He started writing stories as soon as he could read, but just five years ago for publication.  When not at the Inn, you can find him on the bow of his boat writing gay romance novels with his Shetland sheepdog Mavis at his side.  Being from the south and a lover of commitment and fidelity, all of his characters find their way to long healthy relationships, however long it takes them to get there.  He believes that in the end, the boy should always get the boy.
