A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Finding Alexander by Pandora Pine

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Cairo Vanderbilt, the eldest twin son of famed archeologist Gordon Vanderbilt was born to carry on his family treasure hunting legacy—whether he liked it or not. When his father is killed on a dig as he’s trying to find the burial site of Alexander the Great, both the shame and the blame fall to Cairo’s shoulders. He has no choice other than to head a new expedition to find the lost king.

But now that the decisions are his, he’s going to go about the search his own way and he agrees to take history blogger Dillinger DeCosta with him. Dillinger has never visited the Middle East, nor any historically interesting place, for that matter. He’s only written about the past on his Absentee Historian blog. He convinces Cairo to take him with the group so he can finally be on the front lines of history-in-the-making. They agree to him documenting the trip in words, photos, and videos.

Along with Cairo’s twin brother, Memphis, and their best friend, Magnus, the group sets out to find Alexander, but Cairo and Dillinger find each other along the way. There’s ups and downs in their personal relationship in the story, but there’s also underhanded dealings by a competing archeologist and a big reveal about Dillinger’s past that may make finding their way to each other more impossible than finding Alexander.

This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed the pacing and the intriguing storyline. However, the main characters were a bit too “damsel in distress” for my taste. Some of their behaviors were very old-school romance novel. In fact, I could picture them more as heroines of an archeological dig dime novel than heroes in modern-day MM romance.

I’d recommend this book to those who like a sweet romance between two men who’ve lived their lives under their fathers’ thumbs and have found each other’s company compatible both on a friend level and a sexual level. There are sexy times in this story and there’s a Big Reveal that tears them apart and, eventually, good stuff that brings them back together. Personally, I wouldn’t have forgiven Cairothe big drama queen who ranted and raged and slammed the door in anger at Dillingerbut Dillinger was much more understanding and was a sweetheart that Cairo didn’t deserve. The story ends on a happy note with their future together set. So win-win for readers who love that sort of story.

The cover is a photo of a handsome man set against a golden background with a distant view of the pyramids. It’s definitely attention-grabbing.

2)  Iris.  Oh my goodness, there are 2 dozen colors and when they are in bloom, its magical.
3)  Dragon’s tongue – mine are red and they look tropical even though they grow in PA
4)  Asiatic lilies, They put on quite a show.
5)  Rose of Sharon – my bushes are about 12 feet tall and they are covered in purple blooms in August.

Blurb/Synopsis:

Martin Graham built his business from the ground up with hard work and intuition. Due to a degenerative eye disease, he’s learned to rely on his other senses to feel out the competition. To realize his dream, he just needs to broker one last deal… and finally secure an assistant.

Brock Littleton is desperate for money—desperate enough take the job no one else wants: assistant to demanding, fussy, intensely private Mr. Graham.

Everything about Brock gets under Martin’s skin in ways he never expected, making him realize a successful business isn’t the only component to a happy future. But as Martin’s deal comes together, one of the prices could be the relationship with Brock that Martin is just starting to believe could be real.

Excerpt

Edna seemed to relax a little. “You would keep Mr. Graham’s calendar, as well as manage his appointments and conference calls.” She paused, seemingly on unfamiliar ground. “Are you truly interested in the position?”

Brock found himself nodding. He’d grown up in a rough neighborhood and had learned to be scrappy. In truth, there wasn’t a great deal that was going to put him off. He could be Mr. Graham’s assistant while he looked for another job. At least he’d have a paycheck coming in. “Yes.”

“Good.” She leaned across the desk. “In addition to screening calls and managing his calendar, you would be in charge of making sure his office is exactly as he wants it. He’s fastidious about the way his desk is kept, as well as the placement of furniture there and on the entire floor. You might need to drive him to appointments and assist with a number of other duties. Mr. Graham will explain those to you himself.”

Brock tilted his head to the side. “Is there something you aren’t telling me?” His entire spine tingled, and not in a particularly good way.

“Yes. You see, Mr. Graham is effectively blind. He can see only to a point. He wears glasses, and they just keep him from being declared legally blind, but only just. I can tell you that he is fussy and demanding, in part because he has to be in order to navigate a sighted world, and in part because the man is a real pain in the ass sometimes.” She actually smiled. “I know that seems unprofessional, but you need to understand what you’re getting yourself in for.”

“Is that all?” Brock asked with a sigh. “The way you talked, I thought there was something really seriously wrong with the guy.” He could handle that; Brock was sure of it. Being picky about his surroundings made a lot of sense to Brock, and he could figure out the rest.

“All right,” Edna said, finally leaning back in her chair as though she was satisfied. “I have a few more questions for you. Can you travel?”

“Certainly.”

“This job could involve long days. Mr. Graham is usually the first person in the office and often one of the last to leave. Is that something you can accommodate?”

Brock shrugged. “I don’t see why not. I worked hard in school and spent a lot of long hours in labs and behind computer screens. I don’t have a family at home.” And going back to his shitty, tiny apartment wasn’t exactly something that filled him with joy. “If we can come to an agreement, then I’ll be prepared to work.”

“Wonderful. Can you drive? You do have a license?” Edna seemed to be ticking off boxes now, at least in her mind.

“Yes. I have a car.” He didn’t tell her that it spent most of its time parked with a cover over it because he couldn’t really afford to take it out. The parking space was the one and only perk that came with the shitty apartment and part of the reason he’d taken the rathole.

“Excellent. If you’d like to step out, I’ll verify your references.” She stood and walked around the desk, and Brock stood as well. Edna opened the door. “Carol, please get Mr. Littleton a cup of coffee.” Edna motioned him to a seat. “I won’t be long.”

When Noah’s insecurity threatens their fledgling relationship, can Sol convince Noah that he’s enough?

Noah thinks he’s nothing special. Average height, a bit on the skinny side, and cute but rather geeky, he’s relentlessly ordinary. He certainly doesn’t expect to be noticed by Sol, the gorgeous dark-haired stranger Noah usually sees on his commute home.

When a friend persuades Noah to take a big risk in a bid to get Sol’s attention, things turn out better than Noah dared to hope. But Noah doesn’t believe he’s interesting or sexy enough to hold Sol’s attention.

As Sol tries to get closer, Noah tries to protect his heart by pulling away. If their relationship is going to survive, Noah needs to accept that Sol sees him very differently to how Noah sees himself. Because to Sol, Noah is something very special indeed.

An Alisa Review: Eeli (Brotherhood of Ormarr #3) by Steph Marie and Bobbie Rayne

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Eeli~

I’ve been training my entire life for this; I need to be the best, the best fighter, the best dragon rider in the entire brotherhood. This is what I was born for. The only problem is that my bonded dragon, Bodhi, and I can’t seem to get it together. One minute I think we’re connecting properly, and the next she’s taking off, leading me to the one guy I don’t want to know: Slash. He’s basically the opposite of me in every way, and I don’t get why he’s suddenly everywhere I turn, but I can’t deny how he makes me feel when he looks at me.

Slash~

Three years ago my sister and I had to come to a new town and started new schools without our parents’ unconditional love and support. My uncle’s an uncaring drunk, so I’m doing the best I can to keep us both clothed and fed with only an after school job. If I didn’t have her to live for, the loneliness would be excruciating. Now, with only a few months until graduation, I’ve suddenly made a friend because of my sister, and another guy keeps stumbling into me who I think needs help: Eeli. I don’t understand why no one else sees how oddly he’s behaving, but I can’t deny my attraction for him is growing with every mishap.

Eeli is the third book in The Brotherhood of Ormarr series. While each book focuses on a different couple, the overall story arc continues in the next installment. For maximum enjoyment, we suggest reading in order. Eeli is a m/m NA romance, and is recommended for adults 18 years and older.

This is such an interesting world and fate is bringing together the right people together to fix everything.  Eeli and Slash have some big misunderstandings under their belts and have their work cut out for them in building their relationship.

I felt for Eeli, while he tried to succeed at everything based on a comment he heard from his brother years ago, he still feels that he is failing in regards to his dragon and then his mate.  I could see how hopeless everything felt for him but was so happy that they were able to figure it out.  Slash has purposefully kept him and his sister at arm’s length from people since their parents’ deaths but they have finally found a family to be a part of.

That Slash’s sister is basically the key to helping their Calma plant grow and the connection their family had to the clans shows how much fate is pulling the right people together.  I enjoyed seeing Az and Zale have freak outs over their little brother being in a relationship because they just couldn’t see past him being their little brother but I liked the opportunity to see Eeli as his own man.  I cannot wait to read Malachite’s story next.

The cover art by Jay Aheer is once again great and I love the picture of Bodhi.

A MelanieM Review: Nine Small Sips (A Tales Of Bryant Wedding) by V.L. Locey

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Life for Isamu Taylor is now a Cinderella story that includes a Manhattan loft, a new position in the hottest LGBT film production company in New York City, and an upcoming wedding in Bryant Park to his very own handsome prince.

He’s come a long way from that struggling film student with ratty sneakers and shaggy hair. Isamu is now living an urbanite’s fairy tale with that happily ever after just around a bustling city street corner.

But as all wedding planners know, even the best laid plans seem to go awry, and Isamu and Brian’s wedding is no exception. But love – both old and new – is in the air, so nothing can go too badly, right?

Nine Small Sips (A Tales Of Bryant Wedding) by V.L. Locey is such a wonderful joy of a story to read.  The wedding story followup to Tales of Bryant this is exactly the story we not only want to read but need to read.  It has depth where we (and the characters)need it too, banter and straight up giggles in all the right and some of the very hysterically wrong places! And two of the most beloved and quite delightful “worried chins” I’ve every read about!

Those chins would belong to Isamu’s mother and very old grandmother just in from Japan with her ancient Saki set.  Why say anything when you have the most expressive chins to do it for you?  Ok, my face is beginning to hurt again.

Add to that an over the top wedding planner with a lorgnette, an ever tightening schedule, grooms fraying over the details, while still managing sex and to reaffirm their deep love for each other.  Yes, it’s a grand romp, high romance, and family time in Manhattan all rolled into a story to remember.

And they even gave a new couple a launching pad into the  next story which I cannot wait to read.

How Im loving this couple and new series!  It’s a shiny new light in contemporary romance, not too angsty, but filled with warmth, love, and HEA.  Perfect!

And yes, I’m definitely recommending it

A MelanieM Review: NoX by Adrienne Wilder

Rating:: 4.5 stars out of 5

One is a dying man.
The other is a man who died to live.

A nude man invades Luca Suarez’s home and protects him from creatures who cannot exist.
Creatures hunting him.

The stranger can’t tell Luca why. He can’t even tell Luca his name.
He remembers nothing until the moment he sees Luca.

The only hint Luca has to the stranger’s identity is a tattoo on his wrist: N o X

Nox doesn’t know who he is, but he’s sure of three things, his memory loss is temporary, the monsters chasing Luca are called Anubis, and his Alpha, Koda, sent Nox to protect him.

There’s just one problem… Koda is Luca’s brother who was murdered five years ago.

With each passing hour, Nox fills in the pieces painting an impossible truth. And with each passing hour, both men find themselves unexplainably attracted to each other.

Something Luca is willing to embrace because he has nothing left to lose.
And one Nox can’t let happen because it could get Luca killed.

Nox is a HEA m/m paranormal, science-fiction romance.
But be warned, these are NOT the shifters you are used to reading about.

NoX by Adrienne Wilder is a HFN LGBT science fiction novel that ends with new elements added and the author opening up her universe and characters for a sequel that may never be written. Which given the snippets revealed in the author’s notes at the end would be a shame because NoX is a complex, twisty blend of Egyptian mythology, cosmology, shifters, genetics, mad scientists, action adventure, government conspiracy, and , oh yes, hot sex and romance.  Maybe a few more thrown in for good measure.

NoX is a totally engrossing tale from the moment you open the story and meet the ailing Luca, alone in his house on the stormy dark night.   A bang, a flahs, a barking dog, the reader’s pulse starts to race and you become totally involved in this fragile young man’s world and the terror that is about to overtake him.  The writing is terrific, the descriptions are vivid, and the characterization are layered and give these people depth and authenticity.  We believe in them, care for them, and often despair for them.

That is especially true for NoX, the person who begins the story without memory.  That slowly returns in bits and pieces, and as it  does so does his part of the story and back history.  About that I will say no more.

But NoX is told from multiple points of view and it absolutely works,  It flips effortlessly from one person to the next, moving the story and suspense/action forward, while creating angst and a great deal of knots in the reader’s stomach.  Trust me on that last one.

Wilder’s twist on shifter culture pulls from many different areas and genres.  The author brings in Egyptian mythology with Anubis, creationism and origin legends and science, plus sheer old science fiction beings/creature of unknown background now set loose.  There is also plenty of talk of genetics and molecular science.  Except…and here is where it get’s weak…and the author takes the easy way out of a complex explanation or creating one..

“There isn’t enough time for me to explain, and even if there was, you don’t have the education to understand it.”

I read that  to be the author saying that wrote themselves into a scientific corner and that was their solution.  That happens a couple of times here where the intricacies overwhelm the narrative.

There are several major twists to this story, all well woven and one a real stunner that stopped me reading in amazement.  The action is so swift, the information coming at you at such a fast clip that it takes time for the reader to take it all in.  It took me a while to realize that the relationship between NoX and Luca is actually very primal at first, anything resembling something romanic doesn’t appear until later in the story.  So in that respect, you might say this is actually a slow burn romance as well.

It is also violent, graphic, and very sexual which is how the Anubis bonds.  But again that is also such a complex matter, although it appears primal, that it is best left for the storyline.

However, while the blurb states this as a HEA that just isn’t the case.  It would indicate that if it weren’t for that epilogue and the author’s notes.  During the epilogue, more information and new elements are introduced which opens up an entirely new path, characters, and possibilities.  None of which is suggestive of HEA.  The author’s notes are further indication of a sequel in the works as snippets, which are given for the readers to look over.  With Wilder’s note saying it’s dependant on whether or not this does well.

Funny, I always thought you wrote a story because it wanted to be written or you had the passion or need to write it. Huh.

Anyway.  This story stands on it own merits.  It deserves this rating because it’s entertaining, well done, imaginative, and I loved reading it.  Aside from that author’s note of course. Which as you can tell struck me the wrong way.

If you love science fiction that combines a wonderful blend of elements, I think NoX by Adrienne Wilder might be just your thing!  I’m definitely recommending it.

Cover art Adrienne Wilder.  Great cover as it also contains several important elements from the story while being dramatic.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Fake Dating the Prince by Ashlyn Kane

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

A royal deception. An accidental romance.

When fast-living flight attendant Brayden Wood agrees to accompany a first-class passenger to a swanky charity ball, he discovers his date—“Call me Flip”—is actually His Royal Highness Prince Antoine-Philipe. And he wants Brayden to pretend to be his boyfriend.

Being Europe’s only prince of Indian descent—and its only openly gay one—has led Flip to select “appropriate” men first and worry about attraction later. Still, flirty, irreverent Brayden captivates him right away, and Flip needs a date to survive the ball without being match-made.

Before Flip can pursue Brayden in earnest, the paparazzi forces his hand, and the charade is extended for the remainder of Brayden’s vacation.

Posh, gorgeous, thoughtful Prince Flip is way out of Brayden’s league. If Brayden survives three weeks of platonically sharing a bed with him during the romantic holiday season, going home afterward might break his heart….

Sometimes a story and a reader just mesh.  The romance has just the right combination of sweet comedy, heady falling in love, and deeper relationship  issues to make it all work and bring it alive.  Your face grins continually and your heart feels warm.

That’s what Fake Dating the Prince by Ashlyn Kane is to me.  It’s that sparkling, sweet romance you remember and will reread when you need a lift.  The characters that actually dance across a ballroom and into your heart! With parents you love to boor!

l adore it when a story exceeds your expectations.  I always enjoy the Dreamspun Desires line from Dreamspinner Press.  One that started out giving a M/M twist to the older romance tropes we typically read about.  Fake marriages, fake boyfriends, mistaken identities, you name the trope and the authors give it a fresh new LGBT twist.

Here of course, it’s the fake boyfriend and fiance.  From the small European country no one has ever heard of .  Considering the novels and movies where that occurs, must be a zillion of them. The country, the family, and everything about this story made me grin like mad!  Made my heart happy and everything outside their road to happiness and HEA a blank .

And isn’t that what a light-hearted romance is supposed to do?  There’s no real angst here, no great problems.  Just two lovely men looking for love and finding it in each other. In a small place no one has ever heard of.  Plus we get two, not one but two great families.  Really, I could have had much more of them both.If the author is listening.  we need a sequel and a wedding.

If you love contemporary romance and are looking for your next sweet story?  Here is one I highly recommend.  I just adore it.

Excerpt

Those bright blue eyes focused on me, and I felt exposed under his intense stare. I wondered if I’d doubled my anxiety meds because something was off with me today.

“No, I had a late lunch. I think I’m going to head home. I leave for a business trip in a few days. There’s a lot to do before I head for the airport.”

“You’ll give me your number so I can check on you while you’re gone.”

Even though the demand was clear in his voice, I wanted to say no. Yet, I also wanted to obey. My ex hadn’t bothered checking on me while I was away on business. Maybe every few days I’d called him to say goodnight. Check in to see if everything was good at home, but I’d never felt compelled to contact him because I knew it probably wouldn’t have mattered to him. He wasn’t interested in my company, and I’d comprehended it too late. I realized I was staring at Bern, and he raised his brow as if expecting an answer.

“That’s not necessary, I’ve been—”

“I don’t think I asked if it was necessary.”

I frowned at his tone and how his voice was even deeper, which I felt should be impossible. It was commanding and comforting but not the same tone he’d used with Murray. It was hard and unyielding. An order pure and simple. I didn’t like conflict, so I felt my only option was to agree.

“Um, okay.”

“Good boy. You’ll be here for dinner tomorrow night. Six o’clock.”

Fifteen minutes under a stream of hot water sounded perfect.

A basket wrapped in translucent cellophane sat on the pink countertop of the exterior vanity. Other than lubricant, Luca had no idea what the other tiny bottles could be, but the little foil squares were self-explanatory.

He stepped into the bathroom off to the right and braced as he turned on the lights. White tile, white tub, plain white toilet, pink towels with red hearts, pink shower curtain. At least they spared the room any permanent scars.

Luca closed the door and gripped the hem of his shirt.

Nox’s voice came from the other side of the door. “I called for pizza, it should be here by the time you’re out.” Then the door opened. Luca spun around.

Nox wore nothing, leaving every curve of muscle, every ripple of perfection, every inch of intimidating cock, bare.

God, that hooker had been right.

There were only so many things a guy standing around naked could mean. Would Nox expect something like that? He’d saved Luca’s life. And with that kind of debt could Luca even tell him no?

Worse, did he want to?

Did he want to know what it felt like to be touched, to be kissed, to be tasted and do all those things to another person in equal amounts?

The idea teased his insides until his balls pulled tight and his cock threatened to swell.

Luca jerked his gaze back up.

“Your clothes.” Nox held out a hand.

Luca pulled the edge of his shirt lower. “What about them?”

“Give them to me so I can lay them on the heater to dry.”

“It’s okay, they can just hang in here.”

“They won’t dry in here.” Nox was right. Luca knew he was right. And since these were the only clothes he had….

Luca gave Nox his back and peeled off his shirt. He set it on the sink and kicked off his shoes, then unbuttoned his pants. He froze with his hands on the waist of his jeans.

Nox pulled Luca around. The man’s presence, the rich musk and spice of his skin, the heat radiating from his body rushed over Luca, sucking the air from his lungs. Nox lowered his head, parted his lips and inhaled, carrying away Luca’s exhale. Nox moved to Luca’s cheek, his neck. There his breath heated Luca’s skin. Nox tilted Luca’s head back and followed the column of his neck with another deep inhale.

Luca’s heart skittered in his chest. “What…what are you doing?”

“Smelling you.”

Smelling him.

“Why?” Luca leaned away only to have Nox move closer. So close his cock brushed Luca’s hip.

Nox swallowed, and his Adam’s apple bobbed up and down. He made another lap, huffing in quick short breaths rather than long slow ones. Nox loosened his grip. He cupped the back of Luca’s head and made circles on his arm with his thumb.

For several long moments, Nox stood there, then slowly he raised his gaze. “You’re sick.”

Luca’s stomach dropped.

Nox seemed to catch himself. He let Luca go and retreated. “I’m sorry, that was…” He turned.

“Leukemia.” Luca had no idea why he said it. Nox was right, it was none of his business. Even if he could smell the disease.

Could other people smell Luca’s cancer? He’d never even considered the idea.

Nox turned back around but stayed at the door. “Are you getting treatment?”

“Not this time.”

The muscles across Nox’s shoulders tensed, and he balled up his hands.

Luca shrugged. “I’ve had it twice before. Treatment isn’t an option this time.” Luca gave Nox his back again and stripped off the rest of his clothes. He left them on the sink, climbed in the tub, and closed the curtain.

Nox was a momentary blur behind the sheet of gaudy pink plastic, then he closed the door.

About the Author

I am a writer of contemporary and speculative fiction and artist of all things monster. I live to create new worlds and the people in them. Several of my books have been best sellers both nationally and internationally. I have also been a finalist in the LAMDA awards, the “Oscars” of gay literary works.

I do my best to write original stories with powerful characters and emotion as well as a fast-paced plot. My goal isn’t just to deliver a good story but to take the reader into the story and let them experience the characters as if they are right there with them.

While almost all my books have a romantic element, I will be the first to admit, they are not traditional romance. In fact, I’d like to think there is nothing traditional about them. And the stories I paint are done so way outside the lines of traditional genres.

One of my favorite things to do as a writer is push the boundaries of what makes a story and to deliver the unexpected and maybe even change the perspective of the reader.

My characters are more often than not, beautifully flawed, not always the good guy, and make mistakes. Their stories will take dark turns which, in the end, make the light at the end of the tunnel all the brighter.

If you’re looking for something different, exciting, and unique, my books are for you.
