Excerpt

“Aaaagh!” Miguel squeaked again, ducking his head into Hector’s shoulder as a mass of zombies burst into the shop where the hero and his family were hiding. “How are you not dying at this?” he asked in an agonized voice.

Hector held back a grin at Miguel’s over-the-top reaction. After the things he’d seen on the police force, it would take more than a jump scare to freak him out. “I’m trembling on the inside,” he said.

“You are not,” Miguel answered with a dry laugh. He started to pull away. “Sorry about that.”

Hector stopped him. “You’re just going to jump back on me anyway. Might as well stay here where I can protect you from the zombies.”

Miguel snorted another laugh, but after a moment’s hesitation, he settled back against him. He rested against Hector’s chest, with his bent legs laying half over one of Hector’s. As the movie played on, the hero and his crew making a perilous escape from the zombie horde, Hector brought his hand up from the back of the couch, absently running it through Miguel’s hair. The curls were soft, sliding through his fingers.

Eventually the action on screen slowed, giving both the hero and the viewers a moment to breathe. Hector’s attention wandered from the screen, and he realized it was strange to have his hand in another man’s hair. He and Miguel were so close, and it was such a habit from watching movies with dates that he’d done it without even thinking. He abruptly stopped. Sitting there stiffly, his hand frozen in Miguel’s hair, he wondered if he should apologize. Before he could decide, Miguel turned his head slightly, his lips brushing Hector’s neck as he spoke.

“That felt nice,” he said in a soft whisper. “Keep going.”

His chest suddenly tight, Hector relaxed his fingers and slowly started playing them through Miguel’s hair again. His eyes were on the TV, but he wasn’t really watching the movie. Neither was Miguel. His face stayed turned into Hector’s neck, warm breath softly blowing over his skin. It was a surprise and yet not when Miguel pressed a kiss to his throat.

At that moment, Hector should have moved away from Miguel. Hell, he should have gotten off the couch altogether. But he didn’t. He sat there, letting Miguel brush more kisses up and down the side of his neck. A hand landed on his thigh. Hector swallowed hard, then turned to look down at his friend.

Why Three Men Are Better Than Two

My new paranormal erotica anthology Myths, Moons, and Mayhem began its life over a Facebook chat last winter. I was talking with Sexy Little Pages publisher Anna Sky, who said it would be fun to release a Halloween anthology of gay ménage erotica with that title—because the book’s initials and the abbreviation for gay ménage are both MMM. Cute, right?

I love a good play on words. I called my MMM erotic romance novelette set around Pacific Rim National Park Reserve Pacific Rimming, for crying out loud. So of course I pounced at the idea. I told Anna I’d edit Myths, Moons, and Mayhem if Sexy Little Pages published it.

The project was a-go!

Of course, it wasn’t just the project’s title that caught my interest. I simply love the dynamics of three-person relationships. As a writer and a reader, having three people in a romantic or erotic relationship means I get to explore more characters at a deep level. I get to learn about their personalities and how their moods, desires, and quirks affect their partners.

When I started pulling this anthology together, I looked for stories that had strong, interesting characters at their core—men I could root for. The stories also needed an erotic element, but it wasn’t enough to throw in a sex scene or two. The eroticism needed to be essential to the story, both an outgrowth of what the characters had gone through and a prelude to what would happen next.

As a result, the heart of each story in Myths, Moons, and Mayhem is a relationship—erotic, romantic, or both—among three men. Just like there are many ways to be a couple, there are also many ways to explore love and desire within a threesome. Each person in the relationship brings different strengths (and sometimes weaknesses) to the table. The writers of Myths, Moons, and Mayhem excel at showing the different permutations these relationships can take.

For example, in Morgan Elektra’s story for Myths, Moons, and Mayhem, “The Endless Knot,” the fiery romance between a vampire and a werewolf has almost burned itself to the ground. They’re both stubborn, controlling, and unwilling to give. But the introduction of a third person who is their polar opposite in many ways, and a mere human to boot, helps provide a buffer. They learn to relate to each other in a new light. As a couple, they never worked, but when they become part of a triad, everything clicks into place.

In other tales, the established couple is doing just fine, both members confident and comfortable in their relationship. That feeling of security enables them to expand the circle of their love, whether that love takes the form of erotic friendship or something deeper. Desire can also build in the background, as three characters confront a bigger problem together.

For me, the stories in Myths, Moons, and Mayhem strike the perfect balance between awe-inspiring magic, compelling relationships, and sexy characters a reader can fall in love with. I hope you enjoy reading this collection as much as I do!

Exclusive Excerpt From “Squatchin’” by Greg Kosebjorn in Myths, Moons, and Mayhem

About “Squatchin’”: Boyfriends and Bigfoot hunters Jason and Dan get more than they bargained for when they set out on an overnight camping trip to trail the legendary beast.

“Shush!” Jason pressed a finger to Dan’s lips.

“What?”

“Did you hear that?” Jason whispered.

“Hear what?”

Jason pointed toward the outside of the tent. “Something’s out there.”

“I didn’t hear anything.”

But then he did. Branches crackling and leaves rustling. Something was out there, all right. Something moving through the woods. Something big. And it was moving closer to the camp.

Dan sat up, alarmed. “You think it’s a bear?”

“Don’t know. Just sit still and be quiet.”

The movement continued to draw closer until it stopped right outside the tent. Dan’s heart pounded furiously in his chest. All he could think about was how he’d heard that a grizzly bear would kill you outright, but black bears would eat a man while he was still alive.

The creature moved in front of the fire, casting its shadow onto the walls of the tent. Something walking upright on two legs. Something too small to be a bear, yet tall and bulky with a humanlike head.

“Oh, my God,” Jason whispered. “I think… I think it’s a Sasquatch.”

Dan looked from Jason to the shadow moving across the tent wall. “No fucking way.”

Jason dug into his pack. “My flashlight! Where’s my flashlight?”

The shadow paused. Dan’s stomach clenched as he realized the creature was moving toward the tent. “Um… Jason?”

They sat, transfixed, as the footsteps stopped just outside the tent. There was a slight rustle, and then the zipper began to whisk whisked down the tent flap.

Dan’s bladder felt as though it would give way any second. “Oh, fuck, Jason. Oh, fuck!” He backed as far into the tent as he could, all too aware they were both naked and vulnerable. The tent flooded with light.

Each one too stubborn to walk away, determined to make the other one the first to break, they spend their days fighting or ruthlessly ignoring one another. Determined to put an end to the matter once and for all, and to give the notoriously rakish Benedict a taste of his own medicine, Rae sets upon a deception only to realize that there is more than one deception afoot…

Scandalous—Gideon has led a very strict life since the death of his parents, determined not to live the scandalous life that led to their untimely demise and to bring up his little brother in a more stable home. Journeying home to settle the matter of a new tutor for his brother, Gideon is waylaid overnight by foul weather at an inn. He encounters a beautiful young man who is more temptation than he is able to resist, and Gideon impulsively decides that one night, with a complete stranger, cannot possibly come to any harm…

Lessons—There is very little that Jude has not tried or seen, and his shameless behavior has earned him the reputation as the most notorious rake in the city. The one thing he does not do, however, is innocents. Then he chances upon a young man late at night in the park, amused to learn the man is attempting to write a love letter of all things. When he learns that Crispin despairs of ever catching the eye of his love because he is too innocent to be appealing, Jude impulsively offers to teach him all that he needs to know…

The Highwayman—When he receives word that his home is being plagued by a highwayman, Bartholomew immediately sets off for the family estate to see to the matter. When he arrives home, however, he learns that very little is as he remembers it. Instead of one problem to solve, Bartholomew finds himself contending with a highwayman, a murderer, strangers, and an old friend who is nothing like the boy he grew up with…

I love this collection of stories each linked together by location and primarily characters, flowing easily from one to the other.  Arranged in perfect order, they build like a 3-star Michelin food experience with Megan Derr, the chef with all the prime ingredients and exquisite recipes.

Here are my thoughts on each.

Deceived – This is a enemies to lovers story between Prince Benedict and his secretary Rae. Each day is spend trying to force the other to quit/fire him based on the false assumptions each has allowed to accumulate over the years about the other.  Until an upcoming masked ball changes everything.  With the ability to hide behind gorgeous masks, their true personalities draw the men together. That and their shared love of fragrances.  This is a wonderful story and a sensual one as well.  I love the element of perfumes woven throughout.  5 stars.

Scandalous – Gideon is on his way home to his estate and his young brother when he’s waylaid by a storm and a night of hot sex with a delightful stranger. So many things to love about this story.  There’s a fencing scene with where a lonely Gideon is caught ‘dancing’ with his shadow, the younger brother yearning for his older brother’s love and approval, and of course, a love story as well.  So charming.  And from this story we get to see the younger brother grown and looking for love in From Afar.  5 stars

From Afar – Pierce has all that anyone could want in life—an adoring brother who raised him when their parents died, the fame and adoration from being an accomplished fencer, and the best friend a man could have. What he wants, however, is to know the identity of the person who leaves him ardent love letters and why his admirer will not step forward.  I liked seeing Pierce all grown up as well as Gideon and Tem too.  This is probably the the story with the least depth.  The admirer is easily identified,  although I liked the poem aspect.  4 stars.

Lessons – This is  absolutely perfect.  A Rake who takes on an innocent who needs lessons in love because he wants to snare the attention of the man he loves.  The story builds just the way you want it too, as does the love Jude starts to feel toward Crispin, something he’s totally unprepared to feel.  Just a terrific story, one to give you butterflies, along with that great ending.  5 stars.

The Highwayman –  Bartholomew, older brother to Crispin and all around family meddler, decides  that he has to take charge of the situation when he hears that a Highwayman is working the area around the family estate.  Once at the estate, after years away, Bart realizes that nothing is as he remembered it and perhaps there are more problems than he anticipated.  He’s got a highwayman, a murderer, strangers, and an old friend who is nothing like the boy he grew up with.  This is the longest story of them all and easily the most complicated in every way.  The relationship dynamics, the convoluted plots,  and the tricky resolution.  It is also the most satisfying.  A great way to end the collection.  5 stars plus.
