Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words
Daydreaming! Reviewing LGBTQIA Books, all formats ! Binge Watching A World of Romance

Hard to believe it’s time to say goodbye to October. It seems as though it just got here. We finish up this week with Halloween, Samhain or All Hallows Eve depending on how you call that date. And then we begin November, a month traditionally geared here in the States (Canada celebrated on October 9th) for giving thanks and our holiday Thanksgiving.
Rather than go into the historical background, I thought I’d sort of switch it around. Turn it into things we’re grateful for…bookwise. In some cases, its new authors (not new necessarily, but new to us or yes, just plain spanking new release new), new books, whatever. Could be new narrators if you love audiobooks…all it has to be is book related. Could even be a new cover artist because in my mind they are so important when it comes to bringing a reader forward and getting them interested in a story, yes, even in this age of eReaders and eBooks.
What have you discovered or have found this year in books that you are grateful for? Write in and let us know. Short, long, recommendations, however, you would like to tell us. I’m starting us off with my first Author and Series Discover on J.M Dabney on Saturday. I’ve been reviewing this author’s interconnected series and am starting on the reviews of the Twirled World Ink series, the one that began them all. Other authors that I love that jump to mind? That fabulous Rhys Ford of course! So more to come.
Let’s hear from all of you. And yes, details of our What Are You Grateful For in Books Giveaway(s) coming up next week. Multiple gift certificates will be handed out.
Get in the holiday spirit with the Halloween collection of stories from NineStar PressIt’s been twenty years since the quiet Midwestern town of Lakeview was struck by tragedy. But every year on the anniversary of the event Teddy returns home for ‘The Reunion’. Lakeview, like Teddy, has secrets and not all mysteries should come to light.

The path to true love is never easy, especially when you are on opposite sides of the world’s greatest theological debate.
It’s Halloween, and the Demon of Masturbation—Dom, for short—has come to Earth to collect sins and souls for his boss. But a representative from the Interfering Angel Network—Ian—has been sent to put a crimp in his plans. Frankly, though, the two seem less interested in sins and souls than in the three bottles of tequila they down during the night. Alcohol can lower the inhibitions, but it also impacts judgment, and Dom and Ian soon find themselves in the world’s most awkward threesome with a young mortal virgin.
Forget battling for his soul—their real passion seems to be for each other. But Halloween night is waning fast, and the veil between the worlds is only lifted for one night. How can two beings from opposite sides come together when they know they are destined to forever be apart?

It’s Halloween time in Hawai’i and of course Gabe Maxfield is in business. Gabe owes lu’au owner Hiapo a favor (read Tiki Torches and Treasure to find out why!) so when weird things start happening at his lu’au, strange enough to frighten off his hula dancers, he comes to Gabe for help. Skeptical as always, Gabe steps into a creepy mystery where things are going missing or getting moved around and people are disappearing left and right. Can he solve the mystery before everyone he knows falls prey to the woods?
Kicked out of private school, Allen has to brave a public high school where most of the kids don’t know supernatural creatures exist. He expects to be miserable, but he finds himself romantically pursued by two people: a shy, but fascinating boy named Jeremy and a spunky girl named Chloe. The demon in Allen wants to feed off Chloe, but the human part of him is falling for Jeremy. Which will win?

Hula Dancers and Hauntings (Gabe Maxfield Mysteries #2.5) by J.C. Long is one of a series of short stories being released by NineStar Press for Halloween and they are all just terrific. In Hula Dancers and Hauntings (Gabe Maxfield Mysteries #2.5), J.C. Long takes us to Hawaii and an established couple, one of which has never been scared. Oh Gabe watches horror movies with his lover and things of that nature but he’s never been truly frightened until a friend of theirs comes to his P.I. business needing to trade in a favor.
I won’t go any further. J.C. Long does a really nice job with bringing in the Hawaiian culture, establishing the location and his people with the colloquialisms and local terms as necessary. I liked his characters and he totally had me hooked with his premise. I’ll say no more. Great job and great story.

Second Level by Drew Marvin Frayne has to be one of my favorites simply because I laughed so much. And it had such a neat twist at the end. But mostly because of the humor and the wonderful characters. Dom the Demon of Masturbation is priceless, especially when he’s musing on how beauty and body image has changed over the centuries. What’s a short, chunky demon to do?
However, it’s in the swing towards poignancy towards the end where the depth of the story really kicks in and pulls at your heart, surprisingly so after sort of labeling the story a comedy. No there’s more to this little gem than just that. Read it and find out for yourself why I highly recommend it.
Cover art by Natasha Snow is again just perfect.

So as a follow up to last week’s post on the fact that October is LGBT History Month, we had a wonderful comment from Purple Reader with some great recommendations that I wanted to share with everyone:
Purple Reader:
I’m so excited about this post. I’m a history buff, and love combining that with my lgbtq interests. So many to rec; so I’ll have to whittle it down. I’ll start with one my gay book group is reading based on my rec in honor of this month:
– “Flagrant Conduct: the Story of Lawrence v. Texas” by Dale Carpenter, about what I think is the more major Supreme Court decision, which invalidated sodomy laws and led 10 years later to the marriage equality decisions. Some great, moving twists of fate in that.
– Speaking of which, this is good too: Love Wins: “The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality” by Debbie Cenziper, Jim Obergefell
– Many good bios, including this multiple award winner: “Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin” by John D’Emilio
– And of course one about authors, another award winner: “Eminent Outlaws: The Gay Writers Who Changed America” by Christopher Bram
Btw, in Chicago’s Boystown there’s a Legacy Walk up & down Halsted with plaques honoring some you mention (as well as writers Baldwin, Wilde, Whitman & Audre Lorde). Check it out if you’re in town.
Purple Reader’s comment on The Legacy Walk intrigued me, so I did a little digging. Wow. I’m so sorry I missed this when I was in Chicago for GRL. Its now on my must visit list when I return. Check this out!
Turns out there are also LGBT walking tours in other cities as well.
More coming up. And for Purple Reader a special $10 gift card for history month recognition coming your way!

Linden has only one thing on his mind a few days away from Christmas—his pending university exams. That is, until he meets his neighbor’s’ son who has returned for the holidays. Brice Stevens is gorgeous, but he’s insufferable.
It’s Linden’s first love, and he falls hard for Brice, despite Brice’s occasionally aloof and cool behavior. It’s an emotional ride for both of them while Linden takes a crash course in real love and Brice learns to trust in a relationship.
This story was not what I expected and at the same time did not work for me. This is not the sweet holiday romance that the blurb makes it sound like and truthfully isn’t much of a romance at all. Linden leads a very lonely life, he seems to do his best to stay on the outside of all that goes on around him. Brice is basically a jerk from the moment they first meet with only one afternoon that he even acts like a decent human being.
I am not one to judge against insta-love most the time I love them, but that’s when the characters actually work. How Linden could fall in love with someone who never treated him decently just didn’t work and Linden’s relationship with Brice and with his “friends” send out so many warning signals that I couldn’t feel it was possible for him to even be in a healthy relationship. Unfortunately the ending was the only redeeming part of the book to me actually showing the characters seeming to be in stable relationship and real friendships but nothing else in the book seemed to actually lead to that and it seemed out of place.
I love the cover art by Natasha Snow but not sure it’s right for this story.

Country singer turned rancher Brett Taylor fought his way out of the bottle so he could have JT Campbell in his life. JT’s patience, intelligence, and humor broke through Brett’s walls of depression, and now the once-isolated rancher and his young California guy in search of himself are together on Brett’s Texas ranch.October sees our stores start to fill up with all things geared towards the holidays and I’m not just talking about Halloween. No sooner does the candy, masks, and Halloween decorations fly off the shelves, then it’s onto Thanksgiving (US and CAN) and then things like Santas, wreaths, reindeer, elves and more start popping up amidst twinkling stars and fake snow. It’s almost the same with our stories. Have you noticed that?
There’s some lovely contemporary stories with autumn themes coming out or already released, then a quick plethora of shorts with horror or paranormal storylines and then we start sliding into the other holidays almost imperceptibly. I do love that we are seeing a wider variety depicted in our holiday stories. I enjoy reading those, learning and diving into other cultures and religions as I do the romances. How do you all feel about that?
So be on the lookout for books/stories with Halloween, Horror, Witchy time tales, Thanksgiving themes and into the December holidays whatever religion you may or maynot follow. Especially books with the later. Write in with them and let’s see who spots the first December holiday story! Kind of like seeing the first Elf on the Shelf of the season! lol Winner gets a gift certificate. This is in addition to our Horror Rec Giveaway below.
Guess what else is quickly approaching NaNoMa in November. Scratch that onto whatever calendars you keep and know that our writing contest will pop up accordingly.
OK, got all that? Now don’t forget we are also running our horror story Rec Giveaway. Look through all your stories and see which if any fit the profile below. Or give us new ones you’re reading or on your TBR list. We really want to know what’s out there and help our our fellow lovers of Horror and/or Paranormal M/M fiction.

We will run this all month long in order to take advantage of all the new scary books coming out this month as well. So leave a comment/rec, along with your email address where you can be reached if chosen. We will have more than one winner for our gift certificates. Must be 18 years of age or older. Also acceptable are spooky paranormal stories! Ghostly hauntings! Witchy doings! You get the idea! Even throw in a zombie or two! Contest ends October 28 at midnight.

Five stories of men and the secrets and lies that shape their lives…
Deceived—The hatred between Prince Benedict and his secretary Rae is well-known, and the source of much gossip at court. Each one too stubborn to walk away, determined to make the other one the first to break, they spend their days fighting or ruthlessly ignoring one another. Determined to put an end to the matter once and for all, and to give the notoriously rakish Benedict a taste of his own medicine, Rae sets upon a deception only to realize that there is more than one deception afoot…
Scandalous—Gideon has led a very strict life since the death of his parents, determined not to live the scandalous life that led to their untimely demise and to bring up his little brother in a more stable home. Journeying home to settle the matter of a new tutor for his brother, Gideon is waylaid overnight by foul weather at an inn. He encounters a beautiful young man who is more temptation than he is able to resist, and Gideon impulsively decides that one night, with a complete stranger, cannot possibly come to any harm…
From Afar—Pierce has all that anyone could want in life—an adoring brother who raised him when their parents died, the fame and adoration from being an accomplished fencer, and the best friend a man could have. What he wants, however, is to know the identity of the person who leaves him ardent love letters and why his admirer will not step forward…
Lessons—There is very little that Jude has not tried or seen, and his shameless behavior has earned him the reputation as the most notorious rake in the city. The one thing he does not do, however, is innocents. Then he chances upon a young man late at night in the park, amused to learn the man is attempting to write a love letter of all things. When he learns that Crispin despairs of ever catching the eye of his love because he is too innocent to be appealing, Jude impulsively offers to teach him all that he needs to know…
The Highwayman—When he receives word that his home is being plagued by a highwayman, Bartholomew immediately sets off for the family estate to see to the matter. When he arrives home, however, he learns that very little is as he remembers it. Instead of one problem to solve, Bartholomew finds himself contending with a highwayman, a murderer, strangers, and an old friend who is nothing like the boy he grew up with…
I love this collection of stories each linked together by location and primarily characters, flowing easily from one to the other. Arranged in perfect order, they build like a 3-star Michelin food experience with Megan Derr, the chef with all the prime ingredients and exquisite recipes.
Here are my thoughts on each.
Deceived – This is a enemies to lovers story between Prince Benedict and his secretary Rae. Each day is spend trying to force the other to quit/fire him based on the false assumptions each has allowed to accumulate over the years about the other. Until an upcoming masked ball changes everything. With the ability to hide behind gorgeous masks, their true personalities draw the men together. That and their shared love of fragrances. This is a wonderful story and a sensual one as well. I love the element of perfumes woven throughout. 5 stars.
Scandalous – Gideon is on his way home to his estate and his young brother when he’s waylaid by a storm and a night of hot sex with a delightful stranger. So many things to love about this story. There’s a fencing scene with where a lonely Gideon is caught ‘dancing’ with his shadow, the younger brother yearning for his older brother’s love and approval, and of course, a love story as well. So charming. And from this story we get to see the younger brother grown and looking for love in From Afar. 5 stars
From Afar – Pierce has all that anyone could want in life—an adoring brother who raised him when their parents died, the fame and adoration from being an accomplished fencer, and the best friend a man could have. What he wants, however, is to know the identity of the person who leaves him ardent love letters and why his admirer will not step forward. I liked seeing Pierce all grown up as well as Gideon and Tem too. This is probably the the story with the least depth. The admirer is easily identified, although I liked the poem aspect. 4 stars.
Lessons – This is absolutely perfect. A Rake who takes on an innocent who needs lessons in love because he wants to snare the attention of the man he loves. The story builds just the way you want it too, as does the love Jude starts to feel toward Crispin, something he’s totally unprepared to feel. Just a terrific story, one to give you butterflies, along with that great ending. 5 stars.
The Highwayman – Bartholomew, older brother to Crispin and all around family meddler, decides that he has to take charge of the situation when he hears that a Highwayman is working the area around the family estate. Once at the estate, after years away, Bart realizes that nothing is as he remembered it and perhaps there are more problems than he anticipated. He’s got a highwayman, a murderer, strangers, and an old friend who is nothing like the boy he grew up with. This is the longest story of them all and easily the most complicated in every way. The relationship dynamics, the convoluted plots, and the tricky resolution. It is also the most satisfying. A great way to end the collection. 5 stars plus.
