Making a Religion is Never from Scratch by Kelly Haworth

I was that kid who would take every extra credit report the teachers ever assigned and write it on Ancient Egypt. I was obsessed with it, reading up on all the gods and the stories, learning about the language, visiting the museums. I still have a ton of Egyptian trinkets, from statues to tarot cards. I have books on my bookshelf, and can still tell you weird facts, like how ancient Egyptians had a weirdly inaccurate fraction they used for pi, and scholars aren’t quite sure why they never used a more accurate one. (I’m sure they had their reasons!)

So it should surprise no one that when developing a fantasy world with their own religion, I would make a polytheistic one.  And accompanying that love of polytheism with my limited knowledge of the Greek pantheon, I knew that was the direction I wanted to go in a fantasy. There’s something very elegant about being the god of a few specific things, instead of all of existence and experience. Plus, who doesn’t like the stories of feuding gods?

However, actually establishing a fabricated religion is complicated. Throwing around god names during the course of a narrative is relatively easy. But turning those random mentions into an actual practicable religion is a different thing entirely. Before I started drafting Read My Mind, I scoured my two completed manuscripts in the Under the Empire universe for everything about religion I had mentioned. Okay, churches, altars and trinkets, about 5 gods, and allusions to angels. But it was all pretty vague stuff, because I had never had any religious teachings outside of the things one learns in a public school, and what I had read about polytheistic cultures. So I knew what I needed to research, and I came out the other side knowing the difference between a parable and an epistle, that angels come from many cultures, and that the translations of religious texts have been politically bent over the centuries, just to name a few things.

This all fuelled how I shaped the religion.  And adding on the idea that the people of this world had been gifted magic from these gods, I hoped that the idea that one religion would dominate most of the world’s population would be reasonable. I settled on ten gods, each representing one of eight different magics, with two additional gods representing the non-magical.  There would be churches and priestesses for what they bring to communities, and there would be altars and prayer for individuals who wanted to lead their own worship.

Most importantly, I wanted this religion to be inherently LGBTQ friendly. Thus there are canonically bisexual, lesbian and trans gods, and maybe more that I haven’t figured out yet.

Religion or the lack thereof shapes community, drives some governments, influences societal norms. In Read My Mind, I wanted to show a religion that cares and supports and encourages love and giving. I hope I have succeeded in that, and I hope as I write future books in this series, I get to continue to develop it.

Wick is a force all on his own, but when he’s blessed with a special gift from the Mother herself, not even Justice’s powerful wolf can prevent the prophesy from being fulfilled.

 

Prophesy is a different type of fated mates and paranormal tropes. The relationship between vampires and werewolves is also different. As well, as how human perceive them. Some traditional elements like vampires staying away from the sun, and werewolves sense of smell are present, but the author did a good job mixing them with her own point of view.

 

I like the way Justice and Wick met for the first time. I wish their trepidation had been a little longer, but it worked. Their relationship is a very slow burn, but the enemies-to-lovers part moves pretty fast. They do take the time to know each other, and in the end, it helps them to bring their worlds together.

 

This book is character driven. The plot line is minimal, mostly, an introduction to all the characters and fractions. It’s not as action pack and her previous books, but there’s enough to keep you reading. Some parts were a bit slow and the world-built took a big part of the story. I enjoyed the details, but I wanted a bit more of a plot.

 

There’s still a lot more to come in this series. I’m hoping to learn more about this world and the new couples. The potential is there and the story is interesting enough to let the reader wanting more.

 

The author’s writing style still evident on the take-action alpha male characters. Overall, it’s a nice start to a series.

This was such a sweet story.  Sammi and Mitchell’s connection is instant and it kind of scares Mitchell a bit but even with that he refuses to think of not having Sammi in his life.  Sammi has been abused and used his whole life and can’t wait to live his life for himself but he has to face his past first.

 

I loved Mitchell’s determination to keep Sammi even when Donovan does his best to ruin his life.  I loved the relationship he has with his best friend Brian and how he is fully supportive and willing to help both of them.

 

Even with the support of Brian and Mitchell it’s heartbreaking to see Sammi determine that he just needs to leave in order to keep Mitchell safe.  I loved Sammi’s openness and how willing he is to put others first and help someone.  I am looking forward to seeing Brian’s story in the next book.

It was supposed to be a simple drive home for Barrett and his young daughter, Hilary.  But she was restless.  Kept saying there was something, a large black bird, on the roof of the car.  Then they crashed and when he came to his daughter was missing.  Not dead, not run away, gone.  In desperation and half out of his mind, Barrett turns to the man he rejected, whose heart he had broken because he could not accept his own sexuality, Anson.

Anson hears and sees things not of this earth.  Like his Aunt Cyn, those that dwell in the in between or beyond are visible, are tangible, and oh so very real.  When he answers Barrett’s call for help, he is plunged into emotional turmoil.  Anson is still reeling from Barrett’s rejection.  A Barrett that scoffed when Anson told him of his special abilities. Now Barrett wants him to use that very same gift to help him find his daughter and bring her back.  Anson wants to hang up on Barrett.  But the heart wants what the heart wants and he wants Barrett.  Beyond all logic, beyond all reason and in face of known heartache and despair, he still wants and desires him.  So Anson agrees because as his Aunt Cyn says “If you can see, then you must help…”   Even if the cost is beyond all earthly concerns.

Earthly Concerns has so many levels at which to appreciate it.  I love how Xavier Axelson builds our knowledge of Anson without resorting to physical descriptions of his person.    Anson uses ice trays and sleeps with his windows open, letting the night air and sounds reach him.  Bookshelves sit next to his bed along with crystal from his Aunt Cyn.  With each descriptive paintstroke, slowly a picture of Anson appears, that of a man living simply and in tune with his surroundings with all their layers.  For Anson, those layers go beyond our realities and into the darkness beyond.

Insects play a major role here, from the mundane to harbingers of the supernatural.  It is to the sound of a beetle banging against the screen that first awakens Anson, and then the featherly brushing of antennae, real or imagined, against his shin.  You know the feeling.  We have all had them.  We feel the hair on our skin move ever so slightly.  And we react violently running our hands over the offending section of skin, to no avail, not sure if anything was there to begin with.  The pages are full of such imagery.  Broken carapaces and the fluttering of moths wings, all portend the darkness that is coming.

And come it does, riding on vague shadows, crawling under the loose skin of wallpaper, flying on the wings of black crows, crawling from the broken cavity of a tree.  Xavier leaves you to fill in the dark spaces with your own imagination as Anson and Barrett seek to uncover the truth behind the accident and Hilary’s fate.

I love the way Xavier plays with words as he builds his story.  With lyrical sentences and imagery both beautiful and foreboding, we are alternately filled with anticipation and dread as the end draws near.  I find the sexual interludes, past and present, less successful as they break up the mood he has so carefully built.  They seem jarring, and out of character but perhaps that is his point.  I also found Barrett something of an enigma.  I could not get a handle on him, other than as a bereft father and emotionally unavailable man.  That inability made it hard for me to care what happens to him even as his daughter, Hilary, commands our empathy.  By the end of the story, that impression had not changed for me. He still came across as more of a user, someone less than trustworthy.

I think it is the ending that most readers will have issues with, especially given what I said above.  Xavier Axelson leaves us with a glimpse into second chances without telling us exactly how all the characters arrived at that path and what their final destination is. I find that it is in keeping with the story.  Fulfilling or terribly frustrating?  That will depend upon the reader.  If you must actually see a bird to know it there, then you will go away dissatisfied.  But if you can accept the existence of a bird by seeing a shadow or hearing its wings beat against the air, then you will love this. I think I hear the cawing of a crow and the skittering of a beetle nearby.  A perfect story for a October night.

Cover art is a nice update.  Dark, haunting and I liked the model chosen for Anson.

A Stella Review: The Half Wolf by Jay Northcote

The Half Wolf is the first paranormal story Jay Northcote wrote (I think!) and although lately I’m strongly glued to the contemporary genre, I loved this new release quite a lot. Simply because Jay gave me everything I like to find in my readings: love, family, supportive second characters, and loveable MCs.
The love story between Quinn and Kellan was well developed. I was able to know their own stories and see the important people in their lives. and then they meet and the impossible (to Quinn) happens. His life is changed forever. Both MCs have strong personalities, positive attitudes, big hearts. They are enjoyable and easy to love. Plus some secondary characters are very memorable and amazing, it was so beautiful to see these young men surrounded by so many good persons who are ready to be part of the same family.
I found the plot, with the little mystery, very interesting, nothing too big,  but just right to give the author the chance to create later the perfect ending. I have to say I particularly liked the epilogue, it was exactly what I was hoping to read, what I wished not just for Quinn and Kellan, but for Ruth and Tash too, or for Allana.
I want to recommend The Half Wolf, I think the author did a great job, maybe it wasn’t a surprise because he is an amazing writer and I have loved all his stories I read so far. I hope he will write another story here, maybe a sequel, and give me another great paranormal book.

Together, they set to discover the truth behind Corelia’s death in hopes to settle the past and determine the future.

 

I really enjoyed this story.  Dirk has been living under his sister’s thumb for years doing everything she wanted to maintain their family’s status.  Rhys can’t help but feel connected to Dirk and want to keep him safe.

 

Dirk is pretty much depressed about what his life will be like when he marries Corelia when he first meet him.  I hated seeing his confusion and how he seems to be easily manipulated by his sister but Rhys seems to finally give him a reason to stand up to her.  Rhys has to go up against his past to find the way to protect Dirk.  I connected a bit more with Dirk in this story as we saw more of his emotions and his history.  I look forward to reading more in this series.

I am such a fan of flash fiction, the ability to  tell a complete story in 300 words or less.  Renewal is Queer SyFy’s Fourth year’s collection of flash fiction and what an incredible winner it is. Like a library full of tiny jewels, Renewal‘s flash fiction is glorious in it’s presentation of the dizzying array of imaginative themes and world building by it’s host of authors, the authors represented, the timeliness and resonance of some of their flash fiction storylines and the huge spectrum of genres included from horror to fantasy to science fiction.

Also by the sheer poetry of some of it’s stories.  As you can imagine, given the shortness of the fiction, the quantity of stories within is immense.  So are the number I call favorites, far too many to list here.  And it’s funny, you read them so quickly, that you can be several stories past one before the impact it leaves kicks in.  The “huh, no, let me think about that” that leads to you flipping back to that tale and pondering the thoughts of the author may have had writing it.  Trust me, there are many of those.

Over and over again, authors stopped my in my “reading tracks”, left breathless by what was before me.

Under Science Fiction Part II (yes it’s divided into sections like Horror and Fantasy etc), there is this story whose lyrical imagery has stayed with me:

I Will Be Your Shelter by Carey Ford Compton.  I would have bought this collection for this flash fiction alone based on this.  I will give you but this small moment from the story that still makes me weep with appreciation:

The operating room is blue, sterile. We are awake for the procedure. Surgeons slice into our numbed, shaved scalps. The drill bites. Lights, metallic tongue, clicks of bone.

Then: she bleeds into me like watercolor.

Such power, such beauty.  And this collection is full of such haunting tales.

As J. Scott Coatsworth said in his introduction “this collection includes many colors of the LGBTIQA (or QUILTBAG, if you prefer) universe—lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and asexual characters populate these pages—it was our most diverse contest yet.”

I also think it was Queer SyFy’s most outstanding.
