Answers to Our M/M Fiction First Line Quiz #1 and This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Answers to Our Quiz, and The End of First Lines of Novels…For Nowblowing leaves clip rt

Last week we posted the first lines of 14 popular M/M fiction novels and asked you all to guess which books they came from.  Well, here are the answers.  How did you all do?  Not easy is it? I wonder if even the authors would have recognized their own first lines.    Even harder if you are trying to write the line the first time around.  It gives you a new appreciation for some of the difficulties an author has when writing a story and one of the toughest parts can come with the first line.

Still, we need that all important first line to do its job.  To pull us in, to set a tone and even impart a little about the story to follow. Did the lines below do their jobs? I think so.  More to come in November and December.  What’s up next?  Well famous last lines of course!  Have a happy week and for those of you at GRL, I’ll miss you this year and hope you have a great time. See you when it swings back my way!

An Aurora YA Review: Mad About the Hatter by Dakota Chase

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This isn’t his sister’s Wonderland….

Mad About the Hatter coverHenry never believed his older sister, Alice’s, fantastic tales about the world down the rabbit hole. When he’s whisked away to the bizarre land, his best chance for escape is to ally himself with the person called the Mad Hatter. Hatter—an odd but strangely attractive fellow—just wants to avoid execution. If that means delivering “Boy Alice” to the Queen of Hearts at her Red Castle, Hatter will do what he has to do to stay alive. It doesn’t matter if Henry and Hatter find each other intolerable. They’re stuck with each other.

Along their journey, Henry and Hatter must confront what they’ve always accepted as truth. As dislike grows into tolerance and something like friendship, the young men see the chance for a closer relationship. But Wonderland is a dangerous place, and first they have to get away with their lives.

I enjoyed this book, and I was a little wary about it. It’s so hard to take pre-existing characters, or even characters that people will have pre-existing ideas about and writing them as new, fresh characters that can still surprise the readers. I think the author did a good job of this, both by not using all the same characters that a reader might be expecting to see, and also by giving the characters that were well known traits that we haven’t seen before, while still keeping them within the realm of reasonable characterization that made sense in the context of the story.
The plot was very interesting, although similar to the original story in some ways, there was a new spin to it besides it just being about Alice’s brother instead of her. I particularly liked the Hatter’s part of the plot and would even say that he was the most interesting part of the story, more so even than Henry was. Although their interactions were interesting and it was a good way to get Hatter out of prison and away with something to actually do, it definitely seemed like it was more Hatter’s story than it was Henry’s. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing and, given the book’s beginning, isn’t exactly a surprise.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and think it was a fresh take on characters we have seen a few times before and a world we are, for the most part, familiar with.
The cover artist for this book was Paul Richmond and I liked the cover. I’ll admit that to me it seemed a little busy and it didn’t necessarily draw my eyes to a certain place right away. However, the color scheme is really nice and it seems to represent the book well and give people an idea of what they’re going to be reading when they pick the book up.

A Mika Review: Redeeming Hope (Home for Hope #1) by Shell Taylor

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Redeeming Hope coverFifteen years ago Elijah Langley’s world came to an abrupt halt with the death of his high school boyfriend. He keeps his past—and his sexual orientation—hidden until he attends a fundraiser for The Center for HOPE, an LGBT youth center, where he meets Adam Lancaster, HOPE’s infuriatingly stubborn and sexy founder.

A survivor of a turbulent childhood, Adam understands better than most the challenges his youth face. He’s drawn to Elijah’s baby blues and devilish smile but refuses to compromise his values and climb back into the closet for anyone—not even the man showering time and money on HOPE. Months of constant flirting wear down Adam’s resolve until he surrenders to his desires, but Elijah can’t shake his demons.

When a youth from the center is brutally assaulted, Elijah must find a way to confront the fears and memories that are starting to ruin his life, so he can stand strong for those he loves.

I’m super shocked at how much I liked this story. A first for me by this author and I think she did a great job with the character development; she did a good job with them being adults and talking things through. They actually sat down and worked situations out. I liked how they were able to see where they were at and decided on where to go from there.  I’m not usually one for the slow burn books, but I liked that they became friends, fought like most friends do, broke up as friends and talked things through to become involved with each other.

Elijah is a good character with all these caring traits about himself, but he’s closeted. I think him being in the closet more had to deal with the unresolved grief that he’s suffered for the past 17 years. I get it, and I loved that he owned up to his mistakes. I liked that he did not make everything “woe is me.” I think he had to learn something about himself before he could be anything to Adam. One thing I like about Adam was his patience. He made a good speech almost towards the end about being patient enough to wait on Elijah.

I like that both of these men complimented each other at the best and worst of times. I really enjoyed Kollin’s point of view as well, and I think he showed Elijah another side of himself that he didn’t even know existed. I’m so looking forward to book two, and I hope that these guys can continue to talk. Communication is the most important thing to me, and I’m happy to finally read about some ADULTS. I’d recommend to everyone.

Cover Art by L. C. Chase.  I enjoyed the cover. I thought it was spot on with what went on with the story. Good looking Elijah as well.

A Jeri Review: Let the Wrong Light In by Avon Gale

Rating:  2.5 stars out of 5

Let The Wrong Light In coverAvery works hard as a junior architect but nothing is good enough for his project manager Malin. After spending weeks on a brilliant design, only to have it red lined again, Avery confronts his boss. What he doesn’t expect is to be attracted to his boss. Sure he is bisexual, but his boss is as cold as Avery is warm.

I’m going to start with what I didn’t like about the book and why I gave it 2 ½ stars. Although it is told in the third person, it was VERY one sided. Almost the entire book was from Avery’s point of view which showed how he does anything and everything to make Malin happy but gets nothing in return. We as readers get nothing in return either.

It isn’t until almost the end of the book that we get Malin’s back story to explain why he is the way he is and while that does explain most of his “personality” (or lack thereof), I wish we had gotten it a lot sooner. By the time it does come up, it took a bit of work to conjour up any sympathy for him.

And sorry, but this is another example of an author playing at BDSM. It is brought up and dropped several times, was far from genuine and never came to a solid conclusion.

The biggest redeemer is Avery himself. He is so funny and likable. Even his one sided conversations made me smile when reading and he kept me turning the pages.

Overall it was ok but left me wanting more.

Cover art by Aaron Anderson. I could absolutely picture Avery as the man on the cover of the book- hipster glasses and all.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing E E Montgomery author of Just the Way You Are.

Hi EE, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

I’m very lazy. I also like to achieve things. It took me some time but I finally worked out that those two things aren’t mutually exclusive. I just have to work out the easy way of doing things for the best results. Organisation is the key. When I focus, I’m completely focused, so I try to achieve as much as I can during that time, because as soon as I stop, I stop completely and become distracted by anything that floats by.  Ooh, shiny. I’m currently trying to bring a little more organization into my writing because I think it’ll speed the process, but I have to be careful not to organize myself out of the chase. I write because I have to find out what happens. If I plot too carefully, I know how the story is going to end and I lose interest in it.

Part of liking to achieve things goes hand-in-hand with my constant need to know. That means I keep going back to school. I have four degrees—two undergrad and two post-grad—and I have numerous certificates that qualify me for various things (business administration, picture framing, therapeutic massage, plus others). I also take on part time jobs (on top of my usual full-time job) that will teach me something different. The last time I did that was several years ago when I wanted to learn about the jewellery industry and how jewellery was made. I ended up staying in that job for seven years. I’ve also, at various times, found out how fast food is prepared, how waiters work, how a small crops farm operates, and what a market stall owner does. I’m currently learning about property management.

It might sound cold, but I’ve used the same system when dating. I’ve dated people to learn about golf, sprinting, wine, theatrical performance, tax laws, and costuming among other things. My current partnership began because I wanted to learn about ballroom dancing. This one has stuck.

Writing is another way of fulfilling my need to know. When I get an idea, I have to find out what happens.

Just the Way You Are is the fourth book in the Just Life series. When I started the series, I had no idea I was writing more than a short story with an unhappy ending, but every time I got to know the characters, and met a few more, I wanted to know their stories too. This last book is Jonathan’s story.

Jonathan has lived with Anthony for ten years. Anthony is selfish, dishonest and abusive and Jonathan hasn’t been happy for a long time. He stays because he feels responsible for Anthony being in a wheelchair, and he can’t see any alternative. At the end of the third book, Just in Time, Anthony attempts to kill Jonathan and then himself. It takes that violence for Jonathan to understand he has to make a different choice with his life, or die. The opening scene of Just the Way You Are is of Jonathan, only just out of hospital, moving out of the house he shared with Anthony. This is his journey from downtrodden, frightened abuse victim, to the man he once thought he could be.

  • Give us an interesting fun fact about your book or series:

Jonathan’s apartment is based on a building in New Farm, Brisbane. The apartment was for sale a couple of years ago and I entertained fantasies of buying it as an investment. It’s an old building and the apartment had wonderful original features and magnificent polished wood floors.

Just so you know, fantasizing about buying investment properties happens regularly with me.

I’ve pasted an image here of something similar. The image is from: http://www.realestate.com.au/property-unit-qld-new+farm-119850141

  • How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

I find titles incredibly difficult to choose—or incredibly easy. I like to have a title that has some relevance to the story and resonates with it or me. I’m a character-driven writer and my titles reflect that. Generally, my titles reflect something about the character’s life or the core of their personality. Sometimes I get it right, sometimes I get it very wrong.

The Just Life series grew from the first story Just His Type. After the second one, Just Like a Date, fell neatly into place with the ‘Just…’ part, I deliberately looked for titles beginning with Just. The series name was obvious to me because I was writing about something that was just life, nothing anyone else couldn’t also experience at some time.

Ordinary People, as a title, came to me within the first paragraph of writing. It had no other incarnations. Vinnie is such an ordinary person that you’d never think there’d be anything extraordinary about his life. He’s a study in contrasts from macro to micro, and I like that the title foreshadows the contrasts. It’s a good title and I can’t think of another one that would work better, but it would also be a good title for a series.

In Another Life came directly from Katy Perry’s The One That Got Away. I had the title before I had any of the story.

My historical stories have been difficult to choose titles for. Both Between Love and Honor and The Courage to Love began life as something else entirely. Between Love and Honor was originally submitted as My Heart is Broken but luckily was changed before publication. The Courage to Love started life as From Over There, a disaster of a title. I didn’t settle on the current title until I’d finished the book and was onto the third version in my editing before submission.

One of my disaster titles is What About Him. That’s the question that ran through my head the whole time I was writing the story but it stopped me thinking beyond that question when it came to choosing a title.

  • Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

This is Jonathan’s journey from downtrodden, frightened abuse victim, to the man he once thought he could be. He doesn’t DO anything that most other people don’t do every day, but it’s all incredibly difficult for him. To give an example, this is a conversation between Jonathan and his cousin Liam:

“I know you’re scared. That doesn’t make you weak. I’m scared too—about Mark—but I’m not going to let that stop me getting what I know will be the best thing that has ever happened to me. Whatever obstacles Mark and I stumble across, I’ll work through them with him.” He held his hand up to forestall Jonathan’s reply. “I know it’s not the same thing. I don’t have the horror of Anthony living inside my head. What I’m saying is, it doesn’t matter where you’ve come from. Starting something new is bloody terrifying, but if you take control right from the beginning and know where you want to be by the end, I think you’ll have a better chance of getting it.”

Nope. Not helping. It was still as scary as hell. Jonathan’s head was whirling. Deciding between beef and chicken for dinner was too much for him. No way would he be able to decide anything about Ben. Would Ben be expecting a decision from him? Could Jonathan put him off? Just for a while. And there he had his answer. He could barely cope with making day-to-day decisions for himself. Trying to make a potentially lifechanging decision about Ben would send him to the loony bin.

  • What do you think makes a good story?

I was once told, in their simplest form, there are only one hundred different plots to write. If that’s true, and given there are more than a hundred great stories out there, it stands to reason that greatness is in the telling. As an example, I’ll use the Harry Potter series. I don’t think there’s anything special in the writing in those books. A couple of them could have been half the length and still been good. What makes those books stand out from others is twofold: J.K. Rowling is an exceptionally good story teller, and she hit the niche when the audience was looking for it (most of that was because she persevered).

Good stories could also be good for some people and not for others, because the characters’ journeys resonate with something personal for them.

It’s that connection with the reader, whether it’s personal or something they’re now ready to read, that makes a story good.

  • What does your family think of your writing?

I have mixed reactions from my family. One of my sisters is incredibly excited for me to be writing and getting published. She has no problems with the genre or the content. My mother has read all of the books that have come out in print. She liked The Courage to Love because she grew up in the area where it was set and says I got the history right. She acknowledges the books are about two nice boys but makes no other comment than that (not that I’d expect my 86 year old mother to talk openly about sex). Just to be clear, she hasn’t always been so accepting. It’s been a long road to this stage. Most of the others offer me a cross between embarrassed acknowledgement and pretending that part of my life doesn’t exist at all. I always let them know when I have a new release. They’re pleased that I’ve found my passion and am enjoying my life, and they’re incredibly grateful I use a pseudonym. They all love me in their own way and have come to accept that I tread my own path.

Excerpt

Chapter ONE
JONATHAN SHIVERED in the early morning air but not from the chill. He wrapped his arms around himself and groaned as his wound tugged against the movement. He relaxed slowly as the pain eased. From where he stood, he could see between the two apartment blocks to where the sun glinted off the Brisbane River. Five years ago he used to watch the ferries puddle their way up and down the river, dropping passengers here at Hamilton and across the way at Bulimba. He’d missed that view for a long time. He wondered if he’d miss the house now that he was leaving it.
The house was gray—morning gray, Anthony had called it, but it had always looked like unwashed, neglected underwear to him. The lines of the house were precise and symmetrical, unlike the yard. The front lawn bore scars, just like his chest. They were from his Cruiser skidding to a stop the night Anthony had sent him to kill Mark. His eyes burned as he thought how close he’d come to doing what his boyfriend told him to.
At the time, he didn’t think he had any other choice. It was kill or be killed. Literally. By the end of that night, Mark had been the only one left uninjured. Liam’s leg had thankfully healed quickly where Anthony had stabbed him. Anthony was still in hospital with a self-inflicted knife wound to the stomach, and Jonathan… Jonathan was done with that life. Anthony’s knife in his chest—so close to his heart it was clearly intended to be fatal—had cured him of whatever delusions he’d held onto that let him believe he was in love with the man. Even Anthony’s assertions that Jonathan was responsible for him being in a wheelchair since the car accident two years before wouldn’t get him to stay.
He was out of it now, or at least he would be as soon as the removalists came and took his stuff away. Then he could begin to heal. The first step had been to learn to breathe again after his lung collapsed when Anthony stabbed him. The next step… he didn’t know what the next step after this was. He wasn’t going to admit it to anyone, but he was just as terrified now, starting a life of his own—on his own—as he was when he thought he was going to die.
The trembling began again. Dizzy. Couldn’t catch his breath. He leaned beside the front door and forced himself to bring his mind back to the here and now and looked around again. There was a new section of fence now, and the Cruiser had been repaired and sat at the curb, waiting for him. His cousin must have had the damage repaired while Jonathan was in the hospital—learning how to make his lung work again after his boyfriend had tried to kill him. He shook the thoughts from his head. He had to stop thinking like this or he’d go mad.
Sleep last night had been impossible. The house had been cleaned, but nothing was going to completely remove the blood splattered on the white carpet. His blood.
A low rumble burbled through the air, and a truck turned onto the street. Jonathan’s heart raced. “You can do this,” he whispered, although he wasn’t quite sure which part of “this” he was talking about. It could be dealing with strangers on his own, or it could be leaving Anthony—finally. He pressed the heel of his hand over the dressing on his chest. Staying with Anthony was no longer an option.
The truck stopped and turned to reverse into the driveway. The high-pitched beeping made Jonathan jump and, to calm himself, he focused on the two men sitting in the cab. The driver looked young and blond, the passenger older and shriveled, his hair sticking out in unkempt tangles.
“Two people. Not Anthony. You’re outside, everything’s marked. You don’t need to go inside with them at all if you don’t want to. You can do this.” He counted his breaths in and out. The beeping stopped, the engine cut out, and the driver’s door opened.
Long, well-formed legs slipped from the cab, by-passing the step completely as a muscled body slid to the ground. Khaki cargo shorts bunched enticingly around a spectacular package before settling loosely around slim hips as the man’s boot-clad feet landed on the ground and he stood away from the truck. Jonathan moved his gaze up the body. The worn T-shirt did nothing to hide the trim stomach and prominent pecs and the sleeves framed the rounded deltoids perfectly. Jonathan sighed as he lifted his focus higher to see the man’s wide smile.

A Mika Review: Signs of Life (Resilient Love #2) by Melanie Hansen

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Signs of Life coverSuccessful lawyer Jeremy Speer has it all—a loving husband, a beautiful home, and a cherished dream that’s about to become reality. He’s learned not to take happiness for granted, meeting the challenges of life and love head-on with unwavering commitment and fierce devotion. A series of tragic events leave Jeremy shattered, adrift on a sea of unimaginable pain. He’s able to piece his life back together, but instead of embracing it, he merely exists, using isolation and punishing physical exertion to keep the world at bay.

High school teacher Kai Daniels has a heart for at-risk kids—he was one himself, and a teenage brush with the law and some troubled years behind bars left him scarred inside and out. With courage, hard work, and the support of friends, he’s built a fulfilling life that leaves no time for a relationship.

An intense encounter with Kai at a gay club ignites a spark in Jeremy that he thought was extinguished forever, but he’s unwilling to destroy the fragile peace he’s managed to create, and he leaves Kai humiliated and disappointed. Things should have ended there, but a bizarre occurrence brings the two together in a way neither of them expected.

I found this author by her first story “Everything Changes (Resilient Love #1) by Melanie Hansen“. Everything Changes it was just an okay read. I didn’t connect with the characters, so when I found out she was releasing something else with different characters I was game. I read it and gave it a shot.  Unfortunately, it turned out about the same for me.

I’m a fairly resilient person myself, but for me certain terms used in the first half of the story turned me off. I personally don’t like to read about them in my fictional world. I accept that it was the author’s writing and she was telling a story, but I couldn’t let it go. Not really. But I didn’t want this to be a DNF. No I persevered through it, even though once again the connection for mc wasn’t there. One of my favorite tropes, second chance love and major hurt/comfort was in the blurb and I thought I could find myself with this author. I didn’t feel an ounce of anything until 75% of the story. It got manageable by then.

I don’t like filler items in my story and they were a lot here.

I think the writing was good, but it felt out of focus for me. Even through the emotional and heartbreaking moments I felt nothing. I liked that both mc’s went through some things, and are survivors. I think she did okay with their back story. Still the overall the connection just was not there. I wanted to like these two together so much, but it felt forced instead of happening on its own.  Maybe this will be a  different book for you.

Cover Artist: Natasha Snow Designs (cover photo credit provided by Andrew Christian) I see him as being to young for Kai as well as too clean. Kai is someone who has been through some physical as well as emotional things in his life so I expect to see the rugged and the wear and tear. This cover model just seems to pretty for me.

Adam “Izz” Azzi has settled into a happy rhythm. His daughter is healthy, he’s found a mosque that accepts him, and his work as a modern artist is gaining international attention. While his past is fraught with mistakes and what-ifs, his life now is good, and he doesn’t want to upset any of the balance he’s worked so hard to achieve.

When Nick and Izz are reunited by luck and fate, their attraction is just as undeniable, but what was left unsaid haunts them. They have hope for a future together, but wishing may not be enough.

CHAPTER ONE

NICK PAINE tried to duck as a gigantic scarlet bird whipped over his head and he began to lose his balance. The first airborne attack was followed a second later by a screech and another swooping red streak that caused him to crouch and fall to his knees. At least he was wearing jeans today instead of a suit.

Katie snorted, let loose a torrent of giggles, and pointed. “He’s not going to hurt you, Daddy.”

“Isn’t it me who’s supposed to be telling you that?” Nick scrunched his eyebrows together and tried to chastise his daughter while also searching the birdhouse for further threats.

Katie rolled her eyes and flipped her long blonde hair off to the side, appearing much older than her eight years. “Come on, Daddy. I’ll protect you.” She offered her hand, and Nick grinned as he stood, taking her tiny hand in his.

It was a Wednesday morning, one in which Nick should have been sitting in a colorless conference room listening to doctors and administrators fight each other over inane operational details, but despite the threat of being pecked to death by tropical birds, Nick didn’t want to be anywhere else.

It was rare he was able to escape from work during the day, and this field trip to the zoo with Katie’s class had been the perfect excuse. The hospital system was always there. It was a twenty-four-hour seven-day-a-week commitment of utter chaos. Nick still wasn’t quite sure how he’d ended up as a vice president by the age of thirty-three, but had to concede his success had a lot to do with the inordinate number of hours he spent downtown. His generous salary was meant to compensate him for the endless hours on call talking nurses and cardiologists off the ledge while also making sure all their equipment and staffing needs were met. He loved his job and he was good at it, but it took him away from Katie way too much for his liking.

Nick pushed aside thoughts of the hospital. He would be flooded with e-mails, texts, and voice mail as soon as he switched his cell back on. Instead he listened to Katie patter on about the different kinds of birds that filled the zoo aviary.

“How do you know so much about them?” Nick asked as he forced his complete attention back to her.

Katie shrugged in a gesture that was too much like her carefree Uncle Roban. “I watch the National Geographic channel.”

“That much?”

Katie huffed. “Yeah, Daddy. A lot. Loads and loads.”

Nick restrained a laugh. Where had she come up with that phrase? She was growing up so fast. Much too fast for his liking. The years just kept slipping by, and as hard as his path had been as of late, Nick was grateful for the luck he did have. Katie was a beautiful girl. Tall and thin, just like her momma, she had blonde hair shades lighter than his that ran down to her waist and snarled easily with how fine it was. He’d given up attempting to brush the mats out a year ago, leaving the task to Katie’s grandmother or her nanny.

“Look at the baby geese!” Katie exclaimed, letting go of his hand and running full tilt down the pathway toward the birds. Then just as suddenly she was veering off again, a delighted squeal emanating from her. “A waterfall!”

Nick dug into his pockets as he walked to catch up, knowing what she was going to ask even before she said anything.

“I want to make a wish,” she pleaded, looking up at him with wide eyes.

Nick placed a quarter in her outstretched hand, earning a satisfied smile from her.

She scrunched her eyes tightly closed and whispered something Nick couldn’t hear, then tossed the coin into the water.

“What did you wish for, baby girl?” Nick asked, as was part of their routine.

“Daddy, you know I can’t tell you,” she protested with a pout. “Or else it won’t come true.”

Of course he knew that. Katie wanted to flip a coin into every fountain they encountered. And she always went about it as if her whole existence was placed into making that one wish come true. But she never told Nick what it was that she silently hoped for.

Nick had to wonder if she would remember this later on. If she would remember what she wished years from now, or at the very least remember enough to tell him later whether or not they came true.

Nick looked into her brown eyes—so much like his but with a fire that was all her own—and his breath caught. Yeah, he was just about the luckiest man in the world. She stood on her tiptoes, cupped her hands around his cheeks, and planted a kiss on his lips that left Nick with an ear-to-ear grin that he wouldn’t be able to wipe off for hours to come.

A PLOP of wet plaster slid down Adam’s head, over his neck, and dripped under the collar of his shirt as Miriam’s laughter receded into the next room.

Well, then. He supposed he deserved that.

He’d been leaving Miriam to her own devices for far too long as he worked nearly nonstop to meet his deadline. Left on her own, Miriam would fill her time with the mischievous, surreptitious, and wicked dealings that could only be born of an Azzi. She was quiet like him, shy at first meeting, with the same black hair and chiseled features that stood out despite her age. Also like him, she was a goof when in her comfort zone, and Adam’s loft—even though it was a professional workspace—was one of the places she was most comfortable in. She had unlimited access to paints, pens, pencils, paper… and the plaster she’d just chucked at his head.

Adam picked up a stained rag and swiped the plaster off the back of his neck. “Miriam!”

He turned on his stool, rotating to face the kitchen area where Miriam peeked her head around the corner, hazel eyes wide and innocent. But Adam knew better than to be fooled by her appearance. He crooked a finger and pointed to the spot next to him.

She crawled on hands and knees, her eyes going Disney forest creature in size as she got closer to him, and Adam had to bite back a laugh. When she got to his feet, she sat with her legs crisscrossed, hands on her knees, and waited patiently for him to say something.

She was such a good kid. Wild at times, yes. But he’d been the same when he was her age. Unlike his upbringing, though, he was never going to allow Miriam to fear what kind of punishment she would receive. To others it might have made him seem like a soft father, but Adam had rules that were nonnegotiable and rules he expected her to challenge and break. He was always fair. Consistent. And he never touched her in anger. That alone made her childhood vastly different than his. Adam was going to protect her innocence as long as he possibly could.

“Miriam—” he started.

“Yes, Baba?” she interjected, then bit at her bottom lip.

Adam sighed. Whether it was genetics or environment, she was so like him it scared him some days.

“Why did you throw plaster at my head?” He asked the question in all seriousness, then heard how ridiculous it all sounded, looked at the growing smirk on his daughter’s face, and that was enough to send him into a fit of uncontrollable laughter. Adam swooped her off the floor and hugged her to his chest, tickling her ribs. Miriam squirmed and protested, her high-pitched giggle filling the studio.

“I love you, Miri,” he said as he squeezed her tight.

Miriam tucked her head into Adam’s neck and pulled her arms in so Adam had her wrapped securely.

“I love you, Baba.”

Adam’s heart was full almost to bursting. The laughter was enough to give him a second wind. He needed to work. He had to get this sculpture done. But he didn’t want to let his little girl go.

“Finish, then play with me, ’kay?” Miriam offered.

Adam started to tear up. She knew him better than any person in the world. This brilliant, vivacious, too smart for her own good little girl was his best friend. And Adam wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“Yeah, yeah. No more plaster, though,” he chastised her, then kissed the tip of her nose.

Miriam rubbed her nose in protest and squirmed out of his arms, already retreating at full speed. On to another adventure.

Adam sank onto his stool and turned back to his sculpture. Less than three weeks until his next show. And this piece, the focal point of the entire fiasco, had to be done by then. But Adam found himself pushing the work off. He sought inspiration and didn’t find it. He would rather not show it at all than display something that was so… incomplete.

He picked up his brush and studied the form, then put the brush back down. His fifteen-year high school reunion had been last weekend and he’d had no desire to go, but the memories had been inescapable regardless. It was those memories that had led to this piece…. Led to this creative fog he couldn’t force himself out of.

He would eat first. Maybe they’d take a walk. He’d do his afternoon prayers with Miriam, grounding himself in the tradition of his faith. He wasn’t as active in his practice as his mom was, but he still found strength in the words and tenets. In Islam, he found calm, and a connection to his family and to something that was greater than him.

Then, maybe then, his head would be clear enough to see this project to its end.

CHAPTER TWO

“NO, ROB,” Nick said definitively into the Bluetooth mic above his driver’s seat.

“Come on, dude!” Roban yelled on the other end of the phone, and Nick had to turn down the volume on the car speakers because of the sheer volume of the accent-tinged wail. It was only when Rob was really excited or drunk that his Indian accent started to slip through.

Nick took a deep breath and rested his elbow on the armrest. “This is my first day off in five months. I want to spend it with Katie.”

“She’ll be asleep—” Roban started at the same time that Katie, from the backseat, said, “I’ll be asleep, Daddy.”

Nick frowned. Well, then. Apparently the wee ones were joining forces on this one.

“Roban—” he tried again.

“Niiiick,” Roban answered.

Nick stole a glance in the rearview mirror where Katie was strapped into her seat. She had her arms crossed and a disapproving scowl on her face that would make her Uncle Daniel proud.

“Fine,” he relented and Roban gave a much too excited whoop in response. “I’ll go out. But not too late. I have to be at work early.”

“You’re always at work early,” Roban reminded him. “Live a little before your cardiologists drive you into a heart attack.”

“Fine,” he repeated. “But I’m going to drive.” He could try to keep some measure of control over the situation.

“Nope. We’re cabbing it. I’m getting you fucking wrecked. Shit, sorry, Katie,” Roban backtracked, as if he was just remembering he was on speakerphone.

“No worries, Uncle Ro,” Katie yelled from the backseat.

“That’s my girl. Now, Nick. I expect to see you in something else besides a button-down shirt and tie. We’re going downtown. Mayhem will ensue and you must be appropriately attired.”

“It’s a Wednesday,” Nick reminded him.

“Willful Wednesday at the Screamin’ Shillelagh,” Roban responded with a laugh.

Nick stopped at the red light and hung his head in defeat. “Can’t we stay in the burbs?”

“I’ll pick you up at eight” was all Roban said, then his car notified him the call had ended.

Nick shut off his cell and threw it into the passenger seat, then pulled away when the light turned green. Roban would be the death of him. At the very least, the odds were in their favor to end up in a full-on street brawl after closing time. Either way, it wouldn’t be a boring night. Nick chuckled to himself.

“Who do you want to come stay with you, baby girl?” he asked Katie as they drove toward home. Katie was twirling her hair, deep in thought, when Nick glanced back at her. “What is it?” he asked with an edge of worry.

“Can you call Momma? See if she’ll come stay with me?”

Nick restrained a sigh and tried not to feel defeated at the sadness in Katie’s voice.

“Yeah, baby girl. I’ll call her when we get home.”

All laughter wiped away, Nick gripped the steering wheel and steeled himself for the call he was going to have to make.

Evan pressed the button on his phone to connect. “Freddy? What did you find out?”
Fred laughed. “For this, I’m going to exact a price.”
“You mean the keg I sprang for at graduation doesn’t get me a freebie?” Evan shot back.
“We’ve been out of law school for how many years now? Eight?”
“Nine this year,” Evan corrected.
“Credit’s no good anymore,” Fred answered. “I’m thinking dinner at Ivy at the Shore next time you’re in LA. On you, of course. Including a bottle of Veuve Clicquot.”
“For that,” Evan said with a chuckle, “this had better be good.”
“It’s good. And it was hell to get.”
“Okay, okay. Dinner on me. Assuming you and Margie put me up for the night,” Evan replied. “I’m looking forward to seeing your McMansion.”
“Deal. Took a little digging. Seems your mystery man did some undercover work for the FBI.”
“And?”
“My buddy in the US Attorney’s office wouldn’t give details, but word is Constantine got fed up with the bullshit after a case went bad somewhere down in South America.”
“Drugs?” Evan asked.
“No. He dealt with human trafficking. Specifically, child sex trafficking. My friend says the guy’s good. He tried a few cases where Constantine was the government’s key witness. Knows his stuff. Works his ass off and gets into his work. I got the impression sometimes he gets a little too close.”
Now that was interesting. “Why?”
“Seems the guy’s rabid about protecting kids.”
“Any idea why?”
“Nothing anyone would tell me,” Fred replied.
Evan leaned back in his chair. At least Xav wasn’t a slacker, but it didn’t make Evan feel any better about the prospect of bumping into him at work. “Anything else?”
“Constantine grew up in LA, went to school in Boston.”
“Boston?” Even more interesting. So much for his initial assessment of Xav as a broceanographer.
“Yeah, you’ll love this.”
Evan could almost hear Freddy’s grin over the phone.
“He did undergrad at MIT. Mathematics major. Master’s in criminology from U Penn with an emphasis in cryptology. The FBI was probably falling all over itself to recruit him.”
No shit. This just got better and better. “What the hell’s a guy with that kind of background doing in North Carolina?”
“I could ask you the same question,” Fred shot back. “Of course, if you decide you want your own McMansion….”
“You couldn’t pay me enough to come to work for you,” Evan joked. Fred was serious—they’d had this discussion a half-dozen times before.
“Try me.” Fred paused for a moment and then asked, “This personal?”
Evan had no intention of telling Fred he’d slept with Xav. “Not personal.”
“’Cause word has it he’s gay,” Fred said. “Out but not advertising.” When Evan didn’t take the bait, Fred added, “But you already knew that, didn’t you?”
Evan shook his head and sighed theatrically. “Don’t even go there, Freddy. You know I don’t mix business and pleasure. I just want to know what I’m dealing with. That’s all.”
“You can’t bullshit a bullshitter, man.”
“Thanks for the help,” Evan said, foreclosing the topic. “I’ll let you know next time I’m out your way. Tell Margie she’s a brave woman.”
“Always do. Laters. And make sure you get your sorry ass out here soon.”
“Will do.” Evan disconnected the call and rubbed his mouth. Mathematics major at MIT and a master’s from U Penn? No wonder the FBI had recruited him. And he’d pegged Xav for a surfer! What the hell are you doing in Dare’s Landing, Xavier Constantine?

About A Solitary Man

Sparks fly when Chance meets tall, sexy Xav at a Wilmington bar and they have the hottest one-nighter of their lives. Evan is fighting to put an end to rampant cocaine trafficking and chafing under the thumb of an election-hungry boss. About The Authors

Meet Shira Anthony

Shira loves a great happily-ever-after and never writes a story without one. She’s happy to write what her muse tells her, whether it’s fantasy, sci fi, paranormal, or contemporary romance. She particularly loves writing series, because she thinks of her characters as old friends and she wants to visit them even after their stories are told.

In real life, Shira sang professionally for 14 years, and she currently works as a public sector attorney advocating for children. She’s happy to have made writing her second full-time job, even if it means she rarely has time to watch TV or go to the movies.

Shira writes about the things she knows and loves, whether it’s music and musicians, the ocean, or the places she’s lived or traveled to. She spent her middle school years living in France, and tries to visit as often as she can.

Shira and her husband spend as many weekends as they can aboard their 36′ catamaran sailboat, “Lands Zen,” at the Carolina Coast. Not only has sailing inspired her to write about pirates and mermen, her sailboat is her favorite place to write. And although the only mermen she’s found to date are in her own imagination, she keeps a sharp lookout for them when she’s on the water.

A Mika Review: Where Wishes Go by S.A. McAuley

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Where Wishes GoCan you have a second chance at a first love?

Nick Paine is just starting to return to normal after he told his wife he’s gay and asked for a divorce. Despite a daughter he loves dearly and a job he believes in, part of him is stuck in the past. He’s never forgotten the first love he let fade away fourteen years ago.

Low-angst, sweet contemporary story featuring a second chance love.

I really enjoyed this story, with an amazing cast to go with it. I read this in one sitting straight through, that’s how much I liked it. I feel that Where Wishes Go by S.A. McAuley lacks the passion that I require with stories like this. Very low-angst, and I love the second chance romance. I just wish the passion was there between Nick & Adam. I expected it to be fire once these two settled through their difference, instead I just felt like it was coasting through passion wise.

Both guys deal with pretty much different aspects of their past, but they are able to move forth and understand what happened all those years ago. I liked the idea of Adam being of a different race and religion outside of being Catholic. I loved seeing his Islamic religion being accepting of him as a person, as well as his sexuality. And I liked that both guys had children. I think children in stories show a different side of their parents personalities.

I love the side characters as well. I hope some of them can get little novellas of some sort. All in all, I think the author did a good job with this story. I’d recommend to all.

Cover Art by Paul Richmond. I think it’s nice from an artistic standpoint being that Adam was an artist, but for me as a buyer, the cover isn’t that revealing. I wanted to see what this book was about in this instance I had to read the blurb.

A Stella Audiobook Review: Just Desserts (Tales of the Curious Cookbook) by Mary Calmes and Greg Tremblay (Narrator)

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5audiobook clipart bw

Just Desserts Audiobook coverBoone Walton has tried hard to create some distance between himself and his past. He’s invested in his new life, his New Orleans art gallery, and his friendship with Scott Wren. Things finally seem to be settling down to normal, and Boone couldn’t be happier.

Chef Scott Wren wants much more than normal with Boone. He wants to raise things to the next level, but Boone is terrified—and not because of the ghost in Scott’s apartment or Scott’s relatives. No, Boone’s past is about to pay him a visit, and the only thing that can get between Boone, Scott, and a hinky recipe for chocolate mousse found in a curious cookbook is the river of pain Boone had to swim across to get to this side of The Big Easy. There’s a secret behind the ingredients, though—one that might reveal the trust and love that have been missing from Boone’s life.

Mary Calmes and Greg Tremblay are the most perfect couple in the world. My favorite author  and my favorite narrator. I couldn’t have asked for more. Just amazing.

I don’t listen to a lot of audiobooks cause my English doesn’t permit me but after just three books narrated by Greg, I’m so used to his voice, his clear pronunciation, it’s hard to switch to another one. I can’t praise him enough. I simply like how he works a lot.

Mary Calmes is a guarantee to me. She never disappoints and you can’t go wrong with whatever book you pick. Every single time I read one of her story, I fall in love with the characters, in Just Desserts too. Both Scott and Boone were so loveable and sweet, I was engaged in their lives from the start. And I found each little trait I adore in Mary’s writing. The hotness, the feelings, the possessiveness. Even in a story so brief, just hundred pages, she was able to put all of these elements together, plus a real plot, MCs with a lot of baggage on their shoulders, some well defined secondary characters.

A beautiful and emotional “friends to lovers” book. I can’t recommend Just Desserts enough! I didn’t give it the full five stars cause I would have loved it to be a couple of hundred pages more long, I know I’m being greedy but it’s Mary Calmes we’re talking about and I could spend all my days reading just her stories.

Just a note: this book is part of the Tales of the Curious Cookbook series. I honestly admit I haven’t read the other four stories and at the moment I’m not interested in them. Still I didn’t miss anything, because Just Desserts worked easily as a standalone.

The cover art by Reese Dante is yummy. It follows the theme of the series and fits the story perfectly. Well done!
