Hey y’all!

I’m Julia Talbot, and I’m here to blather at you today about Night of the Living Manny, my new paranormal category romance from Dreamspinner Press!

Manny is a mix of the many (or male nanny) trope and an homage to the zombie movie, especially Shaun of the Dead.

Here’s an exclusive excerpt, just for Scattered Thoughts!:

“Yeah. She had ovarian cancer. It went fast. Six weeks from start to finish.” Liam sighed and rubbed his forehead. “It was insane.”

“Oh God.” He reached out but stopped short of touching. “That’s awful. Do you need some Tylenol?”

“No. No, I’m okay, just a little tension.”

“Oh. Well, at the risk of sounding supercheesy, I have massage therapist certification.” Oh God, did he just offer? Way to get fired.

“Yeah? That’s not too weird, because…. It’s probably weird, huh?”

“Maybe, yeah.” He laughed roughly. “Seriously, though, your neck would be easy to unknot.”

“I promise not to come on to you,” Liam said drily.

“Oh. Okay. I mean, sure.” Damn, damn, damn.

“I told them at the service that I was out as bi. Is it a problem?”

“You did? They didn’t tell me.” Brenden shook his head. “That makes it way easier for me, actually. You won’t be worried because I’m gay.”

“Oh. No. No, I won’t be worried. Are people normally?” Liam was frowning again, but Brenden thought it was on his behalf this time.

“Some are.” He’d had one family the service just hadn’t matched well. It had ended badly, with lots of accusations no one could back up and a bonus and apology from the agency.

“I’m sorry. That sucks. I understand. I had a thing with a guy at work. It was bad.”

“Yeah.” Okay, that was…. Wow. Bi. Holy moly, a man should never have that kind of surge of hope. This was a client. There was no way he should be making eyes at the man. “How long were you married?” Did she know you were into men too?

“We got married right out of high school. She was pregnant with Susanna.”

“High school sweethearts.” He smiled, the romantic in him touched.

“Yes. We were together all through high school. She was amazing, fierce. A little wild.”

“Susanna looks just like her.”

“She does. At first it was hard to look at her, but now it makes me smile.” Oh, that was the sweetest grin.

“I’m glad.” This time he did touch Liam’s hand. “Did you get enough snack?”

“I did. You want another beer?”

“I think I’ll switch to Coke, but they’re in the fridge if you’re willing.” He needed to be able to wake up and help the kids if they needed him.

“I’ll grab it. I’m going to have one more, I think.” Liam stood up, and Brenden let himself admire the tiny, tight little ass as Liam was on the way out.

Thanks so much for reading, and I hope you’ll try Night of the Living Manny!

A Stella Release Day Review: Wight Mischief by JL Merrow

RATING 4 out of 5 stars

A ghost of a chance at love.

Personal trainer Will Golding has been looking forward to a getaway with his best friend, Baz, a journalist researching a book on ghosts. But on the first day of their camping trip on the Isle of Wight, Will takes a walk on a secluded beach and spies a beautiful young man skinny-dipping by moonlight. Ethereally pale, he’s too perfect to be real—or is he?

Lonely author Marcus Devereux is just as entranced by the tall athlete he encounters on the beach, but he’s spent the years since his parents’ violent death building a wall around his heart, and the thought of letting Will scale it is terrifying. Marcus’s albinism gives him his otherworldly appearance and leaves him reluctant to go out in daylight, his reclusiveness encouraged by his guardian—who warns him to stay away from Will and Baz.

The attraction between Will and Marcus can’t be denied—but neither can the danger of the secrets haunting Marcus’s past, as one “accident” after another strikes Will and Baz. If they don’t watch their step, they could end up added to the island’s ghostly population.

I have to say Wight Mischief could have easily been a huge disaster for me because a couple of things usually put me off. This time I actually loved the story a lot, although and maybe just because that little things. Or simply it’s that I so love the author, everything just sounded right.

What I don’t like at all in my readings is when the MC has sex with another character that isn’t the other MC, even if the main couple is not together yet, I don’t like it. Full sex or a blowjob or just a kiss, I don’t want it and usually this ruins the whole reading to me. Moreover I need my MCs to fall in love of course but to spend time together too, and in Wight Mischief it felt to me Marcus and Will didn’t actually know each other so well, and for Marcus to trust Will so much in a situation so tragic, was a huge leap in the dark. It could have seemed rushed and unbelievable, and rationally I can agree and understand these two adjectively, but at the end it wasn’t what I felt. Plus, was saves the book to me were the feelings. From the first time I met the characters, all of them, I could feel their hearts, and when Marcus and Will met, the emotions were clear and strong.  The author did an amazing work, she created a beautiful story, well written (no surprise here), with an engaging plot and a lovely romance.

Although this is a rerelease, I haven’t read the previous edition so I can’t tell you if and how much the story was edited. So if you like me haven’t read Wight Mischief the first time, give it now a chance. I feel to recommend it.

The cover art by Tiferet Design is well done and fitting. I like it.

An Ali Audiobook Review: Bobby Green (Johnnies # 5) by Amy Lane and Gomez Pugh (Narrator)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Vern Roberts couldn’t wait to turn eighteen and get the hell out of Dogpatch, California. But city living is expensive, and he’s damned desperate when Dex from Johnnies spots him bussing tables.

As “Bobby,” he’s a natural at gay porn. Soon he’s surrounded by hot guys and sex for the taking, but it’s not just his girlfriend back in Dogpatch—or her blackmailing brother—that keeps him from taking it. It’s the sweet guy who held the lights for his first solo scene, who showed him decency, kindness, and a smile.

Reg Williams likes to think he’s too stupid to realize what a shitty hand life dealt him, but Bobby knows better. What Reg lacks in family, opportunity, education, and money, he makes up for in heart. One fumbling step at a time, they connect, not just in their hearts but in their bodies, where sex that’s not on camera, casual, or meaningless, becomes the most important thing in the world.

But Reg is hampered by an inescapable family burden, and he and Bobby will never fly unless he can find a way to manage it. Can he break the painful link to his unrealized childhood and grow into the love Bobby wants to give?

This is the fifth installment of this series and takes places at the same time the events of the first four books are taking place. There are references to things that are happening with the other characters and most of them have some role in this. The story starts with us meeting Vern/Bobby (his porn name & what I’m going to use for the rest of the review) who’s living an unhappy life in a bigoted small town. A chance to work construction in Sacramento helps him get out but when that quickly goes bad, Bobby is desperate to not have to go back. A chance meeting with Dex gives him the solution he needs and leads him to working at Johnnies where he meets and becomes friends with Reg.

I have to be honest and say I don’t remember Reg or Bobby at all from the other books (but it’s been years since I read the first three books in this series). Reg is a veteran porn star at Johnnies and he’s the good natured guy everyone is friends with (& friends w benefits with). At first Reg was presented as being slow intellectually and I wasn’t sure this book was going to work for me. Characters with cognitive delays can be dicey for me. If there’s any hint of a power imbalance between the two MC’s I’m out. Fortunately (for me) this is not how this plays out. I thought the author did a good job looking at how social issues effect one’s IQ and how emotional IQ is also a big part of how people present. Reg has a really difficult life. He’s been responsible for his mentally ill sister since he was 16 years old. She keeps him captive in his own home and he has no life outside porn and no friends other than the Johnnies guys. His meeting Bobby changes his perspective and challenges what he thought he wanted out of life.

These two start off as friends and it’s a really slow burn between them. I really liked that change up from most romance books. They spent months just hanging out and snuggling and talking. It takes them both awhile to even realize they’re in love.

This book is pretty gritty and parts aren’t pretty at all. Reg’s sister has a very serious mental health issue and some of the scenes with her are pretty rough. She’s verbally and physically aggressive and poor Reg takes a ton of abuse. The situation Bobby is in in the first part of the book was also pretty difficult to read. There was one scene in particular where my stomach kind of knotted up for him.

Something else I think is important to note is these two are not together-together for the first 50-60% of the book and they both sleep with other people, on and off the set. They weren’t at a commitment stage yet, and honestly the way things played out seemed very realistic. I personally didn’t have a problem with it, although I admit a few parts were a little sad, but I think it fit the plot in a very true to life manner. I mention it though as I know that dynamic is a big “no” for a lot of romance readers.

I had previously read and loved this book so I decided to give it a try on audio and I’m really glad I did.  Sometimes a good narration can make a book even better and that was the case here.  This book was narrated by Gomez Pugh and I loved the way he did both Reg and Bobby as well as all of the side characters.  He captured the strong emotions that went on in this story and he made the grittiness of the book come to life.  I thought the entire narration was extremely well done.

This could be read as a standalone. There is a lot of interaction from the guys in the Johnnies group and all of them play at least a small role in this. Some (Dex, Kane and Ethan) play pretty big roles. You don’t have to read their books to be able to follow this one. You will spoiler yourself for multiple things from the first four books though. As someone who’s read all the books, I liked seeing the other guys and it was interesting to see them & their various issues from Reg & Bobby’s view points

This started a bit rough for me but ended up being my favorite in the series except for Chase in Shadows. These two are just fantastic together and watching them as they work through their problems (in life, not with each other) was really touching. They were perfect for each other & I was happy for them in the end like they were real people.

Cover:  This cover is done by Reese Dante and I think it is well done.  The cover models fit the descriptions of the MC’s very well and this cover goes well with the previous four books of the series.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Stone the Crows (Wolf Winter #2) by T.A. Moore

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

When the Winter arrives, the Wolves will come down over the walls and eat little boys in their beds.

Doctor Nicholas Blake might still be afraid of the dark, but the monsters his grandmother tormented him with as a child aren’t real.

Or so he thought…until the sea freezes, the country grinds to a halt under the snow, and he finds a half-dead man bleeding out while a dead woman watches. Now his nightmares impinge on his waking life, and the only one who knows what’s going on is his unexpected patient.

For Gregor it’s simple. The treacherous prophets mutilated him and stole his brother Jack, and he’s going to kill them for it. Without his wolf, it might be difficult, but he’ll be damned if anyone else gets to kill Jack—even if he has to enlist the help of his distractingly attractive, but very human, doctor.

Except maybe the prophets want something worse than death, and maybe Nick is less human than Gregor believes. As the dead gather and the old stories come true, the two men will need each other if they’re going to rescue Jack and stop the prophets’ plan to loose something more terrible than the wolf winter.

Imagine being dumped into a landscape where all your childhood nightmares are real, where the bedtime stories of monsters  with claws to rend your flesh and teeth to eat you told by your gran were not just nasty tales but of horrible tattered together creatures waiting for you to arrive?  This is but the beginning of an incredible story and the second book in an amazing series by T.A. Moore.

Stone the Crows  is the second novel in the Wolf Winter series by T.A. Moore and its a stunner at every level and element.  Horror, urban fantasy, and romance.  There is nothing this author and book doesn’t excel at.

It starts from the beginning, a bleak winter landscape and an isolated compound.  It’s full of dead people.  And that’s where we meet both Dr. Nicholas Blake, cataloging the dead, and the soon to arrive Gregor, werewolf, (twin brother to Jack, and one of the Crown Prince Pup of the Numitor).  The author immediately surrounds us with the horrors of a plague like illness and a catastrophic winter that’s overtaken the population.  Only we see the intimate results on the villagers nearby.  The families and their children.  It’s heartbreaking and ominous, setting the tone for all that follows.

Moore seamlessly blends the Norse mythology with the horrors of the supernatural to create something sublime.  His wolves, his dogs, (they are different), are fully non-human.  Not human characters given a light fur coating and called were.  No, they have the “feel” of something feral and wild. And that contrasted with Nick’s humanity, makes the difference all too apparent. As will all the horrors that follow.

When legends and mythology collide, when blood and revenge are tied together, and a Throne involved, well, as it’s already been proven, there is nothing no one will sacrifice to achieve one’s goals, no amounts of blood, no great number of people, wolf or human that can’t be killed and Moore understands the emotions behind it all.  On both the grand scale and the small emotional, intimate one.  That last one that will leave you  sobbing in scenes here. Trust me…keep those tissue boxes handy.

This is a bleak, gritty, moving story. It’s epic fantasy  It’s full of muddy, emotional complications, and an overall series arc that starts back in book one, Dog Days (Wolf Winter #1).  It’s got a ways to go before its highly involved, convoluted tales  plays out.  So much more blood to be spilled, and I expect the price to be paid equally high.  I’m both dreading and highly anticipating the next story.

You con’t have to have read the first one but why wouldn’t you?  It’s equally incredible and give’s you Jack’s story.  This is a beautifully written story and series.  It has amazing depth, and continues to grow as more elements are revealed in detail.  Again, it’s a stunning story.  Don’t pass it up.  I highly recommend it.

Cover Artist: Bree Archer.  I like the cover but it’s too white (i can’t believe I’m saying this. Doesn’t convey the  darkness of the story).

Stone the Crows (Wolf Winter, #2)

A MelanieM Release Day Review: My Fair Captain (Sci-Regency #1) by J.L. Langley

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

When Intergalactic Navy Captain Nathaniel Hawkins goes undercover to investigate the theft of an IN weapons stash, the mission raises painful memories from his past. Using a title he fled nearly two decades earlier, Nate once again becomes the Earl of Deverell, heir to the Duke of Hawthorne, in order to navigate the ins and outs of a Regency world. But planet Regelence—where young lords are supposed to remain pure until marriage—has a few surprises for Nate, not least of which is his attraction to Prince Aiden.

A talented artist, Prince Aiden Townsend isn’t interested in politics and the machinations of society gentlemen, and he adamantly rejects the idea of marriage and a consort. Aiden wants the freedom to pursue his art and determine his own future. But the arrival of the dashing and mysterious Deverell awakens feelings of passion and longing the young prince can’t deny.

As Nate uncovers a conspiracy reaching far beyond the stolen weapons, his future is irrevocably altered by the temptations of a life he never thought he could have. Drawn into the web of intrigue, Aiden is in danger of losing his life… and his heart.

Well, this is a surprising review to write because I thought I knew exactly how this was going to go before I started the book and wrote the review.  Talk about a teaching moment.  Sigh.  Never make assumptions.  Trite but oh so true.

You see I thought I knew the book I was going to read.  Why?   Because I read the first edition published in 2007.  Well, my paperback copy (yellowed and well loved due to multiple readings) says 2008.  Really, I read that thing so many times I had it half memorized.  I mean, that book sizzled!  Just the growled “Boy” from Hawk to Aiden was enough to have me fanning myself.  And the sex?  Off the charts!  Spanking and yes, fisting. My Fair Captain was incendiary!

It also was funny, layered, and grounded in an amazing universe so well built that it could support a series. As finally did.

Add to that a complicated intergalactic conspiracy that has it’s intricate groundwork laid down in this novel for books to come (The Englor Affair,My Regelence Rake (Sci-Regency #3), a fantastic family and cast of fully developed characters you couldn’t get enough of and you had an addictive 5 star novel.  I’m one of its biggest fans. I knew exactly what to expect when I picked up the new release from Dreamspinner Press.

Only that’s not what I got.

I got My Fair Captain…Lite.

From the original 341 pages down to 244, gone are all the BDSM aspects of the story (a favorite element quite frankly).  The few times that that Hawk calls Aiden “boy” here it makes no sense  and its most likely because they forgot to delete it.  Now he calls Aiden “Sweetheart”.  I actually shuddered.  So far out of character is that nickname as a replacement for “Boy”.

Another character I loved got a lightening of character.  Trouble was a dangerous, brilliant teenage soldier who was capable of threatening to kill someone in the first story.  This made total sense as he had been in countless battles with Hawk on the Lady Anna spaceship.  The second version?  Thrown out the window! That aspect of Trouble where he could actually take down someone in combat or kill someone?  Gone, and with it something of value.  It was endearing to have Trouble wearing bunny slippers knowing he was a predator.  Not as funny when that was removed.

Yes, I got out my paperback after completing the eBook and went page by page because I was so dumbfounded by the changes.

Some beloved passages remain the same.  A lot really.  But there are also major shifts to just a sweet romance, away from the complicated, sensual story I first fell in love with.  So how to review this?  There’s so much of the old still here that I loved?  And yet so much elemental that’s gone.  The framework is here, the characters are all here, but even they aren’t exactly the same…mostly.  It’s just different enough for someone to have read and still loves the original to be off-putting. Like I said all the robust flavor and depth has been removed…and now it’s lite beer.

Which is fine if that’s to your liking.

So, I guess if you are new to this series, you won’t have the same expectations as I did and will enjoy this series immensely. It really does  have great characters, a fast paced plot, lots of humor and romance.  And with four brothers, more stories (one for each) to come.

But if you are like me, a lover of the original.  Skip it.  Run, don’t walk, back to our paperback copies, grab hold and start reading them again like I did last night.  All of a sudden it was 2008 and I had just discovered this incredible author and this amazing book I couldn’t get enough of.  Now to turn on that fan.

First Edition published by Samhain Publishing Ltd., June 2007

Cover Artist: Tiferet Design.  Again, sweet and nice.  Lite! Will never live up to the hottness that was that original Anne Cain cover.  It brought in the half naked torso craze that’s so common now everywhere.  Tired of half naked torsos?  Blame it on this cover because (fans self) thats where it began.  See the original cover design below.

An Alisa Release Day Review: Love You So Madly (Love You So Stories #2) by Tara Lain

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Ben Shane has it all… and he’d like to give some of it back. While he loves his job heading a foundation that funds worthy causes around the world, his engagement to one of America’s wealthiest men leaves him feeling more like a trophy wife than a valued partner. The first warning that his relationship might not be designed to last is his irresistible lust for Dusty Kincaid, the golden-haired, bright-eyed handyman for his company.

Though Dusty is odd for a twenty-three-year-old—no liquor, no sugar, and he can’t even drive—the more Ben gets to know Dusty, the more he admires him. But is Ben going to give up a guy who drives a Ferrari for one who takes the bus? He must be mad. Dusty knows he and Ben can never work. After all, Ben’s perfect… and Dusty isn’t. But Ben might surprise everyone with proof that he’s only mad in love.

I read the first book in this series when it first came out years ago and loved it, I was excited to see the author is now continuing the series because I love a sweet shorter story almost all the time.  Ben is drawn to Dusty when he first sees him and finds that he enjoys his company much more than his fiancé.  Dusty has been a bit sheltered due to his health concerns but embraces the chance to spend some time with Ben.

I still can’t figure out why Ben said yes to Alan’s proposal, he doesn’t seem to really have anything in common or enjoy spending time with him, it may just have been flattery at the time.  I did love his openness to Dusty and how willing he is to adapt his life to someone who actually matters to him.  I loved seeing Dusty finally get something good in his life and you could see how he didn’t want anyone to feel bad for him.  Both of these characters were wonderful and it was easy to connect and see what they were feeling.  I can’t wait to read more of these stories as they come out.

The cover art by Reese Dante is great and I love the visual of Dusty.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is  happy to have J.L. Langley here today talking about writing, characters, and one of our favorites stories, My Fair Captain.  Welcome, J.L.

~ Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview with J.L. Langley ~

  • How much of yourself goes into a character?

It actually depends on the character, but I’d say there is always something of me in my characters. I find the ones that are most different from me are the toughest to write.  In my upcoming story, Diplomatic Relations, Blaise gave me absolute fits because he is so different from me. I had a hard time trying to put myself into his mindset and think like him. Fortunately, I do have a very good friend and critique partner that identified with Blaise very easily and helped see things the way he did.

  • Does research play a role into choosing which genre you write?  Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

No research doesn’t play a part in my genre choice at all. I always start with characters, I’m very character driven, but I do love research.  Like most authors, I find myself losing hours and hours in research because I love to learn new things.

  • Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

Not at all.  As a child, I read Judy Blume. Sadly, I didn’t read as a teen. I know that sounds so bad, but it’s true.  I think English Lit really soured me on reading. I do NOT like literature as a general rule. Especially the things we read in High School. I can sum high school literature up in one word: depressing. I learned really early on in jr. high school that Cliff’s Notes were my friend! I’m not sure I actually read any books after I discovered Cliff’s Notes. Sadly, college literature was even worse. I wanted to throw the book at the professor for making me read, The Lottery. Trust me, he got an earful! And I’d still like to have a few words with whomever wrote the screenplay for Seven.

  • Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

HEA all the way!  As you can probably tell from my answer above. I read for two reasons: to learn (as in how to do something or what happened in the past. I don’t want a moral lesson) or for entertainment. Nothing makes me madder than wasting my time and getting a bad ending. I’m like that with movies too. If I want real life, I’ll watch the news. When I read, I want to be entertained. I want to feel wonderful and refreshed when I’m done.

  • Who do you think is your major influence as a writer?  Now and growing up?

If I had to pick I’d have to say Julia Quinn. I absolutely love everything she writes. She has a wonderful sense of humor and her books are always romantic. She’s a very character driven writer. Growing up? Judy Blume? She had a pretty good sense of humor as well and I do tend to include humor in my writing.

  • How do you feel about the ebook format and where do you see it going?

As a reader, I didn’t like ebooks to begin with.  I wanted a paperback, or preferably a hardback. I wanted that keepsake. Now I won’t read a book if I can’t get it in ebook. Which oddly enough it’s kind of ironic because I love libraries and being surrounded by actual, physical books. There is just something about the smell of them. I definitely see a day where ebooks are the only books.  More and more we gravitate to the electronic. Since I’ve been published I’ve seen a huge shift.  When I first started my print books always sold more than my ebooks, but now? I kind of surprised publishers still do print, they just don’t sell much anymore.

  • Do you have a favorite among your own stories?  And why?

My Regelence Rake is my favorite.  As to why? I’m not really sure. Oddly enough though those are not my favorite characters.

  • If you write contemporary romance, is there such a thing as making a main character too “real”?  Do you think you can bring too many faults into a character that eventually it becomes too flawed to become a love interest?

I don’t think so. The more flawed the better. You can redeem just about any character. After reading Larissa Ione’s, Rough Rider, I’m certain of that. Talk about incredible conflict and incredible character development. Larissa is amazing and that story especially is awe inspiring. <bows at Larissa’s feet>  She definitely redeemed the unredeemable.

  • What’s the wildest scene you’ve imagined and did it make it into a story?

Hmmm…  this isn’t exactly the same thing, BUT… the scene in the Broken H where Shane hears Jamie and Gray in the kitchen and one of them, Gray, I think, says, “suck the head!” And Jamie yells, “eewww… No I don’t like the taste. Stop pushing my head!” It actually happened in RL.  My youngest BIL and I were in the kitchen at a New Year’s Eve party and he was fixing a beer for my husband. I happened to come in as he put the lime in the Corona then added the salt.  It started foaming and the rest his history. We noticed the room got very quiet and we looked up and everyone was standing at the door staring at us.  Needless to say, the beer got all over the floor and everyone died laughing. It then dawned on my BIL and I how the whole exchange had sounded He looked over at me and sighed and said, “This is going in a book, isn’t it?”

  • Ever drunk written a chapter and then read it the next day and still been happy with it?  Trust me there’s a whole world of us drunk writers dying to know.

Nope. I don’t drink. But I have gotten up in the middle of the night and written ideas down when I was still asleep. Needless to say, they have never made it into books, but they are always entertaining to read the next morning. Lets see there was one about a vampire turtle who shot spider webs…  seriously! I read it the next morning and was like O_O  Really?  I couldn’t stop laughing.

My Fair Captain Blurb

When Intergalactic Navy Captain Nathaniel Hawkins goes undercover to investigate the theft of an IN weapons stash, the mission raises painful memories from his past. As Nate uncovers a conspiracy reaching far beyond the stolen weapons, his future is irrevocably altered by the temptations of a life he never thought he could have. Drawn into the web of intrigue, Aiden is in danger of losing his life… and his heart.

 About the Author

J.L. Langley said her first words at six months of age. By the time she was a year old, she was talking in complete sentences and, as most of her family and friends will tell you, she hasn’t shut up since. After becoming an accomplished motormouth, J.L. set out to master other avenues of self-expression, including art, and dance.

She attended the University of Texas, where she majored in art, and worked as a dance instructor on the side. Her love of artistic expression in dance landed her a career in which she taught and performed for over twenty-five years. After marriage to her junior high school sweetheart and the birth of their children, J.L. decided to try her hand at writing. To date, she has several successful novels and a handful of novellas to her credit.

She lives in Texas, where she was born and raised, with her real life hero, their rowdy two boys, two even rowdier German Shepherds and ten goldfish, one of which is named Jaws. When she’s not writing, she can usually be found with her nose in a book, appreciating the communication skills of other writers.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: The Consumption of Magic (Tales From Verania #3) by TJ Klune and Michael Lesley (Narrator)

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

As is usual with TJ Klune’s stories in this series, one needs to first sit down and strap on a seat belt, and then pop on headphones if you are fortunate to be able to listen to the audiobook version narrated by the outstanding voice of Michael Lesley. Be prepared for nineteen hours of crazy sidebar dialogue (mostly courtesy of Gary, Tiggy, and Kevin), of fantasy and the world of wizards and dragons, and finally, of brilliant execution of the written word. It all comes together here, but since there’s one more book in the story, a word of caution: if you are afraid of heights you’d better take your meds—the cliffhanger in this book is a doozy!

Without going into intricate details, I’ll summarize by saying that Sam takes on not only the Great White dragon, but also Lady Tina DeSilva, and worst of all, Myrin. Working with, and sometimes against, wizards Randall and Morgan, Sam and his company of misfits entertain readers with various funny and frightening adventures. We get to revisit Dimitri, the Fairy King, and oh, how I love the voice Michael Lesley uses for him! And we also get quite a bit of time with Gary, Tiggy, and Kevin, all of whom have unique and spot-on voices. Good news for fans: Gary has decided to give Kevin a second chance and the hilariously lewd scenes that take place are a highlight of the story. I find it hard to choose my favorite character in this series, but I think Kevin the dragon is at the top of the list as of now. That faintly Scottish accent with his constantly lascivious words and actions make him quite amazing, in my opinion.

The Kingdom of Verania is in danger; Sam can’t seem to get all five dragons on board to face the dark wizards; there’s more danger from a previously unexpected source; and Myrin has escaped—proving to be the greatest danger of all. Add to that the voices Sam hears in his head, some good, some bad, like Vadoma’s negative predictions that seem to be coming true, and readers are in for a highly entertaining, often nail-biting, sometimes hair-raising adventure. Michael Lesley’s thousand voices accompanied by very clever sound effects makes this a definite audiobook winner.

One last thing—this series builds one book upon another, so this can’t be read as a standalone. However, I do recommend taking the audiobooks on vacation since listening to this series will greatly enhance the joy of any vacation.

The cover by Paul Richmond features a man’s hand with wisps of smoky vapor swirling in the air around it and forming a dragon-like figure. Bright and colorful, this cover is very attention-getting and definitely represents Sam’s magic and his gathering of the dragons.

Hey y’all!

I’m Julia Talbot, and I’m here to talk about Egyptology and Tomb of the God King, which is a book I wrote a while back and that Dreamspinner has been kind enough to re-release for me. It’s out now, and I think I might be a little late with this post, but Scattered Thoughts is AWESOME and are letting me babble.

So I wrote Tomb (mumble) years ago, and it’s one of those books all my longtime readers remember fondly. I wrote it in a paroxysm of Mummy movie love and a spate of penny dreadful books from the Victorian era to the 1930s, from H. Rider Haggard to Lovecraft and beyond. Mummies? Curses? Elder gods? You bet.

When the publisher Tomb was out with melted down, Dreamspinner Press asked me to rework it. Could I make it longer? Maybe make it a series.

Y’all, when I went in, after agreeing to do it, I cried. I raged. I scoured it for new places to add words. What I found was, while far from perfect, there was a reason my readers loved it, and why I did. So we agreed to a new edit, and that was that. I just couldn’t try to make it anything but what it was. A pulp novel, in first person no less, which is odd for me. Sometimes you just look at your older works and think, It was me, as I was, at the time.

So, another amusing (to me at least) thing is, since Tomb was re-releasing during Romantic Times, I bought this awesome brooch to wear to the book signing to promote it.

Mummy!

Pretty, right? I forgot to wear it.

Maybe I’ll go live on Facebook to read a few paragraphs and wear it…

Sigh.

This is an author’s life, y’all.

Thanks for letting me ramble, and I hope you’ll check out Tomb of the God King.

Blurb:

Englishman Christian Hewler travels to 1920s Egypt as the man Friday to an eccentric American millionaire, hoping to make history and establish his name in archaeology. What he doesn’t count on is meeting brash hired gun Eric Lawless, an American cowboy working for a rival team, or the paranormal mystery that draws them in and has them facing down crazy archaeologists, dark entities, and even ancient gods.

From dark tombs to the burning-hot desert of the Egyptian landscape, Christian has to prove his mettle. During this dangerous game of cat and mouse, the reluctant partnership between Christian and Eric blossoms into more—maybe even a love that can last beyond the deception and terror hidden deep in the tombs of the Valley of the Kings.

Memorial Weekend. This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Memorial Weekend.

We Remember.

That’s what this weekend is all about. What it was created for.  After the Civil War was over, Decoration Day came about to honor both the dead of the  Union and Confederate. Now we know it as Memorial Day, remembering those that have fallen, given service to their country, honoring our dead by keeping them alive in our memories, in our hearts and our thoughts.

Living near Washington, DC, Memorial Day and Weekend’s true meaning is never far away.  Rolling Thunder roars past my parents place every year on it’s way to the District.  The Vietnam Veterans Memorial remains for me the most haunting and striking memorial in the District.  The WWII and Korean War Memorials will be visited heavily.  And Arlington Cemetery with its white sea of uniform tombstones stretching for miles and the incredibly moving Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, with its changing of the Guard ceremony, will be overflowing with visitors (families of those buried there and those just paying their respects).  I will be there too.  It’s a family tradition.

My father recently returned to Arlington to visit family buried there.  I forgot it had been a while since his last visit.  He stood stunned by the vista before him.  Arlington has had to expand it’s boundaries since the last time he was there.  The tombstones now spread  out before him like a vast ocean where before my father remembered nothing but trees and meadows.  It was heartbreaking.  What could we say?  So many deaths. So many to remember.  And honor.

For many, it’s a time to celebrate with family and friends.  Picnics and parades, bbq’s and cookouts.

But take time to remember.  And perhaps if you see someone in their military uniform, you might want to thank them for their service now.  I think they will appreciate it.

Have a happy and safe Memorial Weekend.  #WeRemember
