Whispers in the dark and soft, wet touches in Luanne’s dreams suggest she is not as alone in her seaside cottage as she’d thought.

Who will win the key to Luanne’s broken heart: her on-again, off-again lover, Karen, or the tentacled creature haunting her dreams?

Pages or Words: 10,400 words
Categories: Contemporary, Erotica, Fantasy, Lesbian Romance, Paranormal

Excerpt  (NSFW)

Instantly Karen suspected something was amiss. The heat and the beads of sweat around Luanne’s cheeks, the wet on her neck below her ears. All betrayed Luanne’s discomfiture.

Karen walked around. Looked around.

“Can I…?” She headed towards the kitchen. Luanne heard her stir the coffee, clink a cup on the counter.

“Coffee?” Sugar spoon. Fridge door. Luanne leaned over and glanced at Karen in time to see her finish pouring milk. Return to the fridge, clink, clink.

Every sound had texture. Luanne looked around, could not see.

A wisp, a black shadow. The trail of a memory like a dream receding even as she tried to grab onto it, make it tangible.

Karen returned to the room, her hand empty. Luanne felt drunk. She thought of asking, “Where’s your drink?” but decided the words would come out slurred and Karen would know, so she said nothing.

Valerie began writing three months after her divorce, realizing two surprising dreams within a few months. It was more than her imagination that was being held back, and she’s enjoying writing about those dark sexy urges as much as acting on them. Oct-BW Header

As September winds down to the start up of October, so many things start to cram themselves into my head.  Where is the dancing skeleton dressed like a Venice dandy?  And the pumpkin headed schoolboys that talk?  But somehow, as I watch the leaves turn colors and fall, often brown because of the lack of rainfall, a line jumped into my head….”To wound the autumnal summer…”. An opening first line of a  science fiction story of the 90’s, that returns to me time and again even if the rest of the book doesn’t.  [Note: Can I find the book on my many shelves at the moment? No, I cannot.  It will be credited as soon as I can find the damn  book or someone can send me the title or my memory kicks in…which ever comes first.]

First lines are like that, good ones, bad ones, really good bad ones.  Standing there looking at the fall leaves swirl made that one pop back up and now, like a earworm, it will be stuck there all day.    I know I’ve had that happen with first lines from other books as well, from the sublime to the ridiculous. “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.” Yep, that’s another one that has stayed with me along with the story’s imagery. Thank you, Daphne du Maurier and “Rebecca”. The first line has a huge job to do.  It has to hook the reader in, intrigue you, be memorable enough in its content or language to make you continue to read on…  And some do it unbelievably well.

How about these?  Can you place these to the author and novel? One of them even has a famous bad writing contest named after it and is often featured in a comics with a beagle.  Some might be easy, others a little obscure and pulled from my library (and favorite authors).

“It was a dark and stormy night…”

“Call me Ishmael.”.

“All children, except one, grew up.”

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”

“There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.”

“All this happened, more or less.”

“It was a pleasure to burn.”

“It was love at first sight.”

“When I finally caught up with Abraham Trahearne, he was drinking beer with an alcoholic bulldog named Fireball Roberts in a ramshackle joint just outside of Sonoma, California, drinking the heart right out of a fine spring afternoon.”

“We were somewhere around Barstow at the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.”

[Answers below this week’s schedule.]

It got me thinking which the novels you’ve all recently read have had first lines that have stuck with you?  Any of skeleton reading booksthem?  Let me know if you can think of any novels you’ve read where the opening lines have made you sit up and take notice!  In the meantime, here is our upcoming schedule this week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.

Some Famous First Lines:

“Call me Ishmael.” —Herman Melville, Moby-Dick (1851)

“It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the house-tops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.” —Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, Paul Clifford (1830)

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” —Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities (1859)

“There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.” –  C. S. Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)

“All children, except one, grow up”. -, J.M. Barrie. Peter Pan (1911)

“It was a pleasure to burn.” —Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451 (1953)

“All this happened, more or less”. —Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five (1969)

“It was love at first sight.” —Joseph Heller, Catch-22 (1961)

“When I finally caught up with Abraham Trahearne, he was drinking beer with an alcoholic bulldog named Fireball Roberts in a ramshackle joint just outside of Sonoma, California, drinking the heart right out of a fine spring afternoon.” – James Crumley, The Last Good Kiss (1978)

“We were somewhere around Barstow at the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.”- Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Twelve years of friendship turns into something more when Eva Porter’s two best friends confess their love for her after a heated night between the sheets. Her only dream over the years had been to be the woman for Max and Sam. Living a ménage lifestyle was new to her, but she knew, deep down, that this was what she needed. Eva soon realizes it will take two men to love her completely.

When a threat to Eva’s life presents itself, Max and Sam step up security around their home to keep Eva from being harmed, but the man who wants her dead will stop at nothing to take her out. The suspect will risk everything, even death, to take Eva away from the two men sworn to protect her.

Max left the station with the two files in hand. It was close to mid-morning and the evidence from the storms the night before dotted yards and roadsides on his way back to his property just outside the city limits. Small trees were down and although there was no tornado, there was some wind damage to homes close to his.
Thankfully, it looked like they only lost a few limbs on the large oak trees in the sprawling five acres of his front yard of the property. So, it was no surprise to see Eva and Sam spending their Sunday morning cutting and hauling away limbs to a pile to be burned later.
Max stopped on the long gravel driveway up to the house. Eva was tossing limbs into a small trailer that was being pulled behind one of the four-wheelers they owned. Sam approached Max’s SUV, swiping away dirt from his cheek.
“Hey,” Max said when Sam was close enough to hear him. “Eva doesn’t need to be using that shoulder.”
“Tell her that,” Sam laughed and hooked a thumb over his shoulder. “Stubborn, remember?”
Max noticed how Eva was lifting and huffing with a heavy limb. Her long brown hair was pulled up into a tight ponytail and she was bundled up in jeans, boots and one of the hoodies that Sam had bought for her the day before. After the storm had rolled through, the temperatures dropped quickly and they’d be expecting snow in the next few days.
“I’ll go in and build a fire,” Max said, keeping his eyes on Eva’s small body as she worked. She really was beautiful.
“Okay, we’ll finish up and meet you at the house,” Sam winked.
“Hey,” Max said suddenly, stopping Sam from turning away.
“Yeah,” Sam replied.
“How is she this morning?” Max asked, worried. Would she panic and run?
“Perfect,” Sam looked back at Eva. “She’s absolutely perfect.”

When Aiden loses his journal, he worries that the secret he is trying so desperately to keep will come out. And if it does, how will everyone react? The beautiful eyes belong to the beautiful girl from the library. The one I notice every day for one reason or another. The one I sketched on a page in my journal. I’m such a creep.
“Hi,” she says loudly.
I take out my earbuds and turn off my radio that’s still in my pocket. “Hi,” I say back.
She’s on one knee to be eye-level with me, but she spins and sits down beside me, really close. Wait a minute…
SHE’S GOT ON THE COOLEST BOOTS!
They’re shiny black leather and they go up to her knees. The bottom of them is a three-inch platform, all clunky and sexy—I mean cool. She has black skinny jeans tucked into them.
“I just wanted to make sure you were alive,” the girl says. “Why are you all the way over here, by yourself?”
“I don’t know anyone,” I admit.
She holds out her right hand. “I’m Abby Abernathy.”
I grasp her hand. Handshakes are always awkward. Her hand is really warm or mine is really cold.
“I’m Aiden Adams.”
“Nice to meet you—now you know someone.” She smiles.
“I guess I do.”

Jonny glanced up from his stack of surveys and geological reports, frowning. Kasey rarely sounded so serious these days, which for a broody older vampire was quite a feat. Hooking up with a werewolf had been the best thing for the fellow, really.
“What’s wrong?”
Kasey’s black brows drew together in what looked to be a puzzled scowl. “We have a situation.”
He barely held back his eye roll. “Goody.”
“Yeah, yeah. Deke got these today. Came in from our monitoring entry into the country.” Kasey handed him a stack of printed photos. Of what looked like his lover, Luc. No, not just looked like. This was Luc, except that his slinky werekitty was asleep in cat form four feet above him on the top of his armoire.
He let one eyebrow raise and pinned Kasey with a look. “Explain.”
“Yeah, somehow I think we might have to ask Luc to do that.” Kasey walked over and pulled that fuzzy black tail hanging down like a lamp chain.
He did enjoy his lover’s speed, the wild yowl, the flash of claws. Good thing Kasey had a vamp’s reflexes.
“Hey, furball. I need you to be human for a minute,” Kasey said.
Luc muttered, calling Kasey a wild assortment of things, including a few insults about Kasey’s mother, as he crawled down the armoire.
“It’s not as if he can see the photo, Kasey,” Jonny reminded gently. “He’s blind.”
“Oh. Right.” Kasey grinned over at him. “He’s so good at everything, I forgot.”
Jonny did glare at his mate, however. “Tell me, sweet, do you have family I don’t know about?”
Luc stretched, totally unconcerned with hurrying to console him in the least. Possibly. Which one in particular?
“One who looks just like you?” It was uncanny, really.
Ah. My twin. Yves. So casual. Ah yes, my twin — as if it were nothing.
Jonny glared, knowing Luc would feel his disapproval. “This didn’t seem important?”
“Children, we need to share the information with the investigator,” Kasey reminded them.
“He has a twin, apparently.” Jonny nudged Luc with the toe of this shoe. “Come speak to Kasey.”
Luc sighed, a sound that came out as a cough for a kitty, before shifting to his human form, which always made Jonny’s ears pop.
“I thought you knew,” Luc murmured.
“How could we know?”
Luc shrugged. “He’s never in the States. He’s always in South America bonding with the natives and hunting precious gemstones. He’s an addict. Has to hunt. I haven’t talked to him in…”
Luc stopped and frowned, and Jonny didn’t like this. Not at all.
“…in a bit.”
“How long?” Kasey asked, tone sharp. Someone else felt the weird vibes, too.
“Right before I met my mate, I think. I spoke to him then.”
Jonny exchanged a glance with Kasey, who scowled. “What did you talk about?”
“Emeralds. He had asked me to acquire a certain pair, I did the job, put them in a safety deposit box, and let him know.”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake. Who else knew about these emeralds?” Now Kasey was growling as though he was the werewolf instead of his lover, Deke.
“I have no idea. I had an address, a window. That was it.”
Jonny nodded slowly. “Okay. Kasey, you and Deke find out who else had an interest and if Silvia has anything to do with this. Luc, you need to get ahold of your brother. I want a detail on him.”
“What does that mean?” Luc scribbled down an address, a safety deposit box number. “He’ll go here. I mean, I’ll put an ad in the paper, see if he hollers. He’s… slippery.”
“That means if we thought he looked like you, someone else might think he’s you,” Kasey said. “I’m on it, Boss.”
Jonny sat back with a sigh, drew his mate into his lap. “You are a very great deal of trouble, sweet.”
“I’m worth it.” Luc kissed him. “Yves is… not like me.”
“Tell me about him?” Jonny stroked Luc’s hair, curious as hell.
“He’s addicted to gemstones, to the stories behind them. It’s like a sickness, worse than the jobs I used to work, I think, because I was at least collecting funds for it.” Luc leaned in, snuggling close. “There was another of us. He died fighting insurgents in the desert, long before there were troops on the ground. Yves went a little crazy when we lost Girard.”
“I’m sorry, sweet.” His family had been gone so long that he barely remembered them fondly.
“It was a long time ago; he’ll get over it.”
The sudden stiffness in Luc’s body said perhaps that was a bit of a fib. Jonny didn’t remark upon it; he simply touched and kissed until Luc relaxed.
“Love you, Mate.” And that was that, yes? What they had together, it was love.
“And I you, Luc.” He kissed Luc’s jaw. In fact, he loved his kit enough to want to finish off whoever had hurt him and to protect this unknown brother Yves.
Good thing Kasey and Deke knew what to do from here.
Someone needed to have a clear head in all this. He hoped his friends could do that for him.

From How the Mighty Have Fallen by Bailey Bradford

Hadrian sat up straight and stuck his nose in the air. “And, just for your information, I have not been–“

“Liar, liar, leather chaps on fire,” Larry sang. “Shut up already, you vestal virgin, and go get fucked and whipped. At least one of us should be having fun tonight. Since I can’t find anyone who wants to do only one of those things with me, I’m giving up. Plus, Thomas’ ex is busy trying to fuck everything that crosses his path. I’m guessing he thinks he has something to prove.”

Hadrian bristled a little when Larry called Master Thomas just by his given name instead of using the honorific, but he got it. Master Thomas wasn’t Larry’s master, nor was he Hadrian’s. However, Hadrian always thought of him as Master Thomas, perhaps because he did harbor a secret desire to serve the man. Although, maybe it wasn’t such a secret, since Larry had picked up on it.

“I guess he does have something to prove,” Hadrian murmured since Larry seemed to be waiting for some kind of agreement from him.

“But is it to himself, or to Thomas, hm?” Larry asked. “You gotta wonder what went down between those two, though… I heard stuff about Kelly. The guy’s an asshole and a half.”

Hadrian arched a brow at Larry. “And what, exactly, is a half an asshole?”

“A fuckin’ mess who likes to screw with people’s heads, that’s what,” Larry drawled. “Now grow a pair and go make that dom feel better.”

Hadrian wanted to smack Larry, but the smug smartass would just enjoy it if he did.

Larry narrowed his eyes at Hadrian. “Or, you know, I suppose I could go see if he wants to do a scene together.”

Hadrian was irritated despite his desire to remain unaffected by Larry’s attempt — damn it, a successful one! — to goad him into action.

Because suddenly, Hadrian’s body was determined to circumvent any argument his brain might have made. He was standing up and flipping Larry off before Larry could do more than cackle.

“You’re an ass,” Hadrian muttered.

Larry gave him two thumbs up. “You love me.”

Hadrian didn’t dignify that statement with a response. Besides, Larry was right and he knew it.

“Go get ’em, stud,” Larry urged, not nearly as quietly as Hadrian wished he had. Of course he was loud enough that Master Thomas glanced their way.

Announcement clip artLast week I was happy to introduce Free Dreamer as our latest reviewer to the Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words blog.  Now I get to announce that Wynter aka Lavender Wynter to our merry group of readers and reviewers.

BioIcon3

From Wynter…

“This marks the beginning of another adventure for me, which is surprising to say the least. I thought I would be well worn out of them by now if one was to know my history. Yet, as I come across Melanie’s call for reviewers, there’s a restless soul in my head that likes to say, “This sounds interesting. Let’s do this. It’ll be fun!”

She likes adventure. So, here I am.

I’m originally from a little island in east Asia, moved to and lived in southeast Asia for 10 years before starting and finishing college in the United States. I write as much as I can in my free time and reading is the only food source I can’t live without. I’m a lover of fantasy and prefer serial fiction (multi-volume stories).

The only genre I stay away from is horror. I’m rather picky and choosy about science fiction.

I’ll like to bid all of you a wonderful and blessed day. I look forward to working with the wonderful people here, and my thanks to Melanie for letting me join the community. It is a pleasure to meet you all.”

What a great month!  First F. D. and now Wynter!  Woot!  What I hope this means for you is that Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words will be able to bring to readers is an even wider spectrum of  perspectives (and perhaps new authors and books).  I can’t wait to find out.  falls leaves 2

Happy Labor Day, Announcements and This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

labor_day_clipart

Happy Labor Day!

I’ll be raising a glass to Rosie later on in the day!  Join me, won’t you? But before our celebrations start… a few announcements.  First, we have a new reviewer at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words. Please welcome Free Dreamer.  Her reviews should start to appear by the end of the month.  Another reviewer looks to be coming on board as well.  More on that later.  Now watch me do the happy dance as Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words expands once more.

Here is a small part of her bio:

AnimeRoseGirl

“Hey there! My name’s Free Dreamer. I’m in my early twenties, I live in Vienna and recently started working in a book shop. I’m not a native speaker, but I lived close to London for about 10 months, so English very much feels like a second mother tongue.

I love my books to be dark and gritty. My favourite M/M author is Cornelia Grey, amongst others. I’m not easily squicked and I like books with plenty of plot outside the romance. So I really like Fantasy and Sci-Fi/Dystopian books. Though I do enjoy the occasional contemporary story and historical romance set in Asia. Basically, I’ll read pretty much anything, as long as it’s not full of teeth-rotting fluff or PWP.

Outside of M/M my favourite author is Brandon Sanderson. Should I ever have the honour of meeting him in person, I shall fall to my knees and declare him God of Fantasy. I’m not a typical romance reader, so I very rarely read M/F Romance. Mostly, I stick to Fantasy, Sci-Fi and the occasional historical novel set in China or Japan.”

Tony & Darian have been friends and playing together in their band, Sexual Frankenstein, for a few years, and while they really are friends, they’ve never crossed that line — no matter how much they may want to — because of their band and friendship, as well as not thinking the other is interested.

The apparent interest in one of them, from their hot and very glam new singer, brings things to a head as long-buried jealousies push to the fore, leading both Tony and Darian to reevaluate what they already have and what they so desperately want.

This story previously appeared in the Po’boys Anthology, published by Torquere Press.

Pages or Words: 13,000 words

Categories: Contemporary, M/M Romance

Excerpt

Yeah, the voice was bad enough because it was so good, but even worse was the fact that Andy was too fucking good-looking and not at all shy. Andy would never sit around for two years, yearning for someone who had never once seemed to be interested, just because he was too scared to make a move. No, Tony was pretty sure that Andy, with his make-up and highlights, his dramatic wardrobe and even more dramatic nature, would just stroll up to whoever caught his eye and say something to make that person laugh. Something to make their blue eyes shine and crinkle at the corners. Something to have that person’s slightly wavy, collar-length dark-blond hair moving wildly while that same person’s soft-looking, pink-lipped mouth opened in a grin to reveal almost perfect teeth, aside from the one lateral incisor on the left that was crooked and overlapped that left front tooth just enough to be cute and quirky rather than snaggly.

Add in the stage moves that Andy somehow kept managing to pull off without stumbling or tripping over his own feet — or any of the numerous cables covering the stage — and Tony definitely hated the bastard. More than hated him when the jerk took each and every opportunity to maneuver over to Darian’s side and rub up against him, singing into his eyes, looking wicked and delicious. Eight times so far, because Tony was keeping count, and Darian didn’t seem to mind even a little, damn it.

My own fault. Should have manned up and taken my shot before, and now it’s too late. I’m a fucking idiot. And how appropriate was it that the next song on their playlist was the old Cinderella ballad “Don’t Know What You Got”? Not that Tony had ever broken anyone’s heart, but he totally understood the emotion behind the chorus.

About The Author

Meet TC Blue

Contrary to popular opinion, TC Blue was not raised by wolves. Nor did she spring, fully formed, from the forehead of a god, instead entering the world in the usual manner.

A true jack-of-all-trades and master of none (otherwise known as flighty and unable to make a decision and stick with it), she currently resides near the east coast where she does her best to avoid politics and religions as a general rule.

TC can usually be found sitting in front of her computer, trying to wrangle rabid and numerous plot bunnies, though her muses insist that she not be too hard on the poor little fluffy things. (Poor little fluffy things with sharp teeth and claws, but whatever. Muses don’t seem to care much about the possible bloodshed if the bunnies think TC’s not writing quickly enough.)

One thing sure to calm the bunnies is hearing from readers, so please feel free to contact TC at tcblue@live.com or stalk her: on Twitter — @tc_blue, on Facebook — T.c. Blue.
