Synopsis

Maltinian Ambassador Jedryn Parvone is forbidden fruit to a simple Human ship Captain like Jacob Meryl. But when a mission puts them in close quarters once again, will Jacob continue to bury his feelings? Not if Jedryn has anything to say about it.

Excerpt

Jacob answered the door buzzer a little under three hours later—he’d had just enough time to shower and look presentable. Clad in a floor-length, shimmering red robe that clung to his hips unmercifully, his long, thick hair done up into a bun with a colorful feather sticking out, Jedryn walked toward him with the graceful ease only a Maltinian possessed. Jedryn’s face lit up in a wide, sweet smile, and Jacob felt his guts tremble in response.

Jedryn brushed his lips gently across his cheek. “I have missed you,” he whispered.

Jacobs’s stomach did flip-flops. Jedryn was forbidden fruit of the highest order. The man’s father had never warmed to Jacob; probably never would. For Jedryn to mate without his father’s consent would mark Jedryn as a c’entrath.  A nasty slur among Maltinians, the closest Human equivalent was something slightly worse than whore.

He brushed his sweaty palms on his pants for the hundredth time, and took a deep breath. He had never been anxious around anyone, but something about Jedryn rattled his nerves. Aside from being the most physically beautiful man he had ever encountered, Jedryn was also the kindest, the purest of heart. He doubted the alien carried a mean bone in his body. Far too good for the likes of him.

“Is there anything to eat?” Jedryn asked, stepping back. “I am famished.”

Jacob nodded, at last taking in the pallor of his skin and the dark almost purple, circles under his bright blue, almond-shaped eyes. He took Jedryn’s hand and led him to the small kitchen area, gestured for him to sit at the table. They would have to discuss the mission, but for a while maybe he could keep the topics to more mundane things. “How’s your sire?”

“You do not need to avoid the subject of the slaves.”

“I’m not avoiding anything. I’m being polite.” Jacob shrugged. “I hear he’s making progress with the Disputed Space talks.”

Jedryn groaned. “If there exists a more stubborn race than the Bortors, I have never heard of them. Do you know their delegate fought my sire at every turn?”

“Perhaps she doesn’t want peace.” Jacob poured a glass of amara juice and slid it across the table. He turned and fished out a bowl from the cupboard. “Salad or stew?”

Jedryn downed several sips of juice. “Salad, please. I think she does want peace,” he said, getting back to the conversation. “She is just…stubborn.” Jedryn folded his arms on top of the table and rested his chin on them. “How have you been?”

“I’ve kept busy.” He tossed a few leafy greens into the bowl—Jedryn didn’t like anything else in his salad—dribbled some flavored oil over them, and handed off the bowl. He joined Jedryn at the table with a sigh.

Jedryn sat up and picked at the food, frowning, his forehead knit together. “This is lovely, Jacob. Thank you.”

Jacob blinked several times, taken aback, as always, by the sincerity and warmth in Jedryn’s expression and tone. Two things the universe no longer had enough of. He recovered quickly, somehow remembering to breathe. “Anyone can make a salad.”

“Still, it is nice. I so rarely get to eat Human food, and I do prefer it so much to the bland cuisine of my home world.”

“Perhaps when I retire I should start a cooking school on your planet, eh?”

Jedryn laughed, a musical sound that sent shivers up and down Jacob’s spine. “You would either do extremely well or extremely poorly.”

And for a moment, just a tiny, shivering moment, Jacob let himself imagine it. Perhaps he would share a cozy little home with Jedryn on Maltinia. He pictured it, standing at the door of their house, gazing out at the fields and mountains beyond, at the stationary clouds—big and fluffy in that picturesque way that defied reality, as if he had stepped into a painting. Shadows of those same clouds would cover half the mountains, the trees below them cast in a hue of deep green.

They’d have the sort of life poets wrote about, minstrels sang of, and artists loved to capture on canvas. The sort of life that could make a man believe in the perfection of his world—a world with only beauty and peace. The sort of life that could make a man feel as though he truly belonged—not just to any one thing—but to everything: the trees, the water, the air, the soil. The sort of life that could make a man feel complete and want for nothing.

Any man except him, that was.

He slid his gaze to the window, to the stars beyond, longing to be out among them. He missed the familiar quirks of his ship, the camaraderie of his crew, and the adrenaline-pumping excitement of their escapades. The domesticity of vacation didn’t sit well with him, but after their last mission—after he’d narrowly escaped capture by the Koralens and managed barely to save his ship and crew— he’d felt they’d all been owed a little time off.

Jedryn finished the last few bites of his salad, then gave a shy smile and lowered his gaze to the table. “When I was here last, they had made great advancements with the hydroponics. Do you think there is anything new to show me this time?”

He could show Jedryn something, all right. “As a matter of fact, I know there is. Come.” He stood and offered his hand.

Synopsis

James Kane could be summed up in one word: loser. He silently lived as a ghost amongst his parents and he had zero friends at school…unless you count his cousin who had to defend him against the abusive Matt Tracker.

When his parents divorce, James moves to Montana and stays with his grandmother, where he makes an extreme adjustment to his life-becoming a different someone named Jennifer. The transition comes with frightening issues Jennifer never thought of. After two years of recovery, she returns to her old high school to start over but she meets up with her past tormenter and gets caught in a web of secrets as she finds herself falling in love.

Her conscious gets the best of her as she tries to be truthful to Matt about who she once was, but will he accept her as his girlfriend, Jennifer, when she was once his punching bag, James?

Excerpt

“Do I need to blame this on your father?”
“If I had a penny for every time I heard that…”
“James.”
“I’m not James, I’m Jennifer. I have it on m’license, birth certificate and my school enrollment. Do I have to show you the rest of me to prove it?”
“No, that’s not necessary.”
“It’s not new. I am who I’ve always been”
“No, you used to be named James.”
“I also used to be ‘this close’ to slitting my wrists.”
“I think you need to leave.”

A Stella Review: Three More Wishes (Three Wishes #2) by Sean Michael

RATING 4 out of 5 stars

three-more-wishes-rainbow-islandCome to Rainbow Island, where all your sexual fantasies will come true.

James, Guard and Damien are back, still running their resort, where every fantasy, no matter how perverse, may come true. The three men continue working out the bumps in their threesome, but when it comes to their clients, they’re a well-oiled machine. Which works perfectly for the three new couples arriving in paradise.

Cameron is losing his sight, and he knows that he’ll be useless once it goes completely. He’s cashed in everything to leave his life behind for one last fling. Xander is on the island for a fantasy, too. He’s looking for someone to love on, someone to care for and Cameron seems to be the perfect match, but can they make it work?

As a writer, Ben always writes the script, which is why his fantasy is to give up control. He’s told his fantasy can’t be fulfilled, so he settles in for a relaxing vacation on an island paradise instead. Is he really as safe as he thinks he is?

Finally, Leo is a consummate top, always wanting to better his technique. He wants to know what it’s like to be a sub, but it won’t be easy for a Dominant to bottom for five days. Leo will do his dead-level best to measure up—his only worry is who the boys choose to be his fantasy top…

Don’t miss out on these fantasies come true.

Reader Advisory: This book contains a scene of fisting as well as scenes of kidnap and dubious consent

I’m a huge fan of Sean Michael, once a month I need to read something by him, a re-read or a short, anything is good.

Three More Wishes is the book two in the Rainbow Island series, incredibly I missed the first one but apart for some more details about the relationship between the three hosts of the island,  James, Guard and Damien (which I would love to know), this re-release worked well as a standalone to me. If you already have read this author, you’ll know what to expect. Sean Michael is great at writing very hot scenes, sexy and dirty just how I like them. And the sex is never pointless, it’s just the guarnish to lovely and sweet plots.

In Three More Wishes I get to know three new couples and their relative meetings and starting of new relationships.

Cameron and Xander were probably the sweetest couple, they are a match made in heaven. One blind, desperate man, ready to end a life with no sight and with no possibilities for him to survive, meet Xander, protective, already trained up on the world of the blind people. It was very emotional seeing Cameron first so resigned and then start to believe in Xander and the reality of a future together.

Ben and Tip relationship was more adventurous, Ben is a writer interested in knowing what it means to be kidnapped. Things don’t go exactly how Ben expected, on the contrary he will find the unexpected Tip. And I can assure you, since I didn’t read the blurb before starting the book, for a moment I truly thought he was kidnapped.

The last couple was probably my favorite. Leo and David story was hot and cute. Leo is a dom looking for another dom who will help Leo better understand sub’s minds. That dom is David but David is also in love with Leo since forever.

I enjoyed Three More Wishes a lot. Of course there are four stories in just a little more than two hundred pages, there is no space for a lot of development but what I got greatly satisfied me. I can’t wait for the next installment, especially cause I want more  James, Guard and Damien scenes.

Just a note, read the warning at the ending of the blurb, if you’re not comfortable with those triggers, better stay away from the book.

The cover art by Posh Gosh is just okay, I like it but in my opinion it’s not fitting. I can’t understand who is the couple depicted. For this book a cover with no people at all would have been a winner. In fact I like more the cover of the old edition.

Falling Into Autumn and This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

autumn header

Falling Into Autumn

“The foliage has been losing its freshness through the month of August, and here and there a yellow leaf
shows itself like the first gray hair amidst the locks of a beauty who has seen one season too many.”
–   Oliver Wendell Holmes

Ah, September.  That month of in-betweenness.  Neither summer nor fall.  Still hot but sometimes cold.  Its the month that never quite figures out where it wants to be.  It fluctuates between seasons, like someone dithering on making a decision between clothes they are trying to decide on for an evening out. The sweet yet raucous sounds of late summer are still in full swing…cicadas are still a loud chorus at my house.  Yet also can be heard the sounds of snow geese and Canada geese, flocks in flight, sounding off, in preparation for migration.  So too have I seen my first sight and sounds of kettle of hawks, soaring high above…all signs of autumn approaching.

Literature is full of love notes to autumn.  And not just literature, poetry, songs…from Neil Diamond’s September Morn to Henry David Thoreau’s “Happy we who can bask in this warm September sun…”, odes to this wildly uneven and serendipitous month are everywhere.  Its jumbled ways making people perhaps feel a little crazy and alive, as if they don’t know what to expect from each day to the next.

So I’ll leave you with some crazy facts about September:

  • Shakespeare did not mention September in any of his plays.
  • Groucho Marx said “My favorite poem is the one that starts ‘Thirty days hath September’ because it actually tells you something”.
  • Band-Aids were invented in the month of September.
  • The last day of September in any year always falls on a different day of the week from the last day of any other month.
  • The poem “Mary had a Little Lamb” was published September 1st, 1830.
  • September 5th, is National Cheese Pizza Day.
  • September 9th is National Teddy Bear Day.
  • September 16th is National Play-Doh Day.
  • September 19th is “Talk Like A Pirate Day” around the world… an International event.

So argh me hearties!  That’s more than enough for any crazy month, including September, which has Labor Day, one of our best known holidays here in the States.

We also have a new reviewer starting up with us this month.  Welcome, Caryn.  Her first review will be posted this week!  All in all, a very busy week.

Things Are Heating Up All Around Us and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

sun thermomterThings Are Heating Up All Around Us

August Heat is the name of a short story by W. F. Harvey, penned in 1910.  It tells the tale of two men, previously unknown to each other who find out through slim connections that one will be murdered by the other.  It ends with the character Withencroft writing the day’s events as Atkinson sharpens some tools: “It is after eleven now. I shall be gone in less than an hour. But the heat is stifling. It is enough to send a man mad.”

Ah, yes, the wonderful August heat!  Whether you are the characters of Harvey’s August Heat, or August Heat (Commissario Montalbano #10) by Andrea Camilleri, Stephen Sartarelli (Translator) or the families, cowboys and ex soldiers in BA Tortuga’s story, Real World, where the Texas heat is as real as the men and situations she writes about in her Love is Blind series,  the searing heat of the summer acts like a main character of its own in novels and real life all over the world.  This series is rapidly becoming a favorite series of mine.  But that no surprise as I include that author as a favorite writer to rec as well.

We have a number of release day reviews this week, as well as audiobook reviews and regular reviews too.  If you love fantasy, be sure to check out Blaine D. Arden’s Forester Trilogy which is ending with Full Circle: Forester Triad Act Three (Tales of the Forest, #3) and can be found complete in A Triad in Three Acts which will also be reviewed this week.  Plus you won’t want to miss its stunning covers.  Ali is reviewing a book that she thinks will be in her top 10, will it be in yours?  Check it out.  Plus I have Christian Baines back with his long awaited sequel to The Beast Without, The Orchard of Flesh (Arcadia Trust #2) by Christian Baines.  I have a author interview and giveaway.  Don’t miss that either.  What a week we have in store.

Plus this will be our last week for our old look.  Next week, a new look, a contest to welcome in something entirely different.   Stay inside, away from the heat, unless you’re in the Southern Hemisphere where its winter and  cold.  Grab up some books to read either way.  Be here with us all week!  Leave your comments, we love hearing from you.  Now for this week’s schedule.

Those Hot August Days and This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Those Hot August Days and Nights

https://youtu.be/z2YvYiWtovM

In tropical climes there are certain times of day
When all the citizens retire
To tear their clothes off and perspire
It’s one of those rules that the greatest fools obey
Because the sun is much too sultry
And one must avoid its ultra violet ray

The native grieve when the white
Men leave their huts, because
They’re obviously definitely nuts!
Mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun…*

(find all lyrics here)

Mad dogs and Englishmen, written by Noel Coward and also later sung by Joe Cocker, summed up some of what the ancients already knew.  The hot summer skies could drive you batty.  It drove the lions and other predators out of the high mountains looking for water and food, telling the local populace that just by looking up at the night sky and the constellations looking down upon them that it was time to pen up their livestock or bring them down out of their highland pastures.  Or if you were honest like Jane Austen, you wrote this:

“What dreadful hot weather we have!
It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance.”
  Jane Austen

But if you look further, our poetry and books are full of lyrics and rhymes where the summer night air is forever perfumed and full of song (its crickets and cicadas, damnit, laughing)  and romance is waiting for lovers everywhere.  The fact that you were sweating away is somehow forgotten.  I sort of love that, since I’m sitting in my air-conditioned room writing this.  Plus, yes, I know, they didn’t know what air conditioning was.  They used fans or what have you.  It was still hot, they napped.  Hot is hot. Dry heat included.  Don’t get me started on Delta Dawn heat.

So before I start in on this week’s schedule I’ll leave you with two contrasting views of summer.  Not that the first author couldn’t write some startling views of humankind, but here he’s in a kinder frame of mind. Then there’s Henry Rollins.

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”
– William Shakespeare

“The streets lie, the sidewalks lie, everything lies
You can try and read it but you’re gonna get it wrong…all wrong
The summer evenings burn and melt and the nights glitter but you’re gonna get it wrong
And it’s gonna sink its teeth into your flesh and pull you to the bottom.”
– Henry Rollins

Why bring them up?  On August 9th, its National Book Lovers Day.  From William Shakespeare to Henry Rollins, and Jane Austen to Walt Whitman. And in M/M fiction, from Ethan Stone to Devon Rhodes, to Amy Lane and Rick R. Rick and so many more. To any author you have ever loved and read and reread.  Grab up an extra book or two, or three or four.  I know I’m going for that new Harry Potter story too.  So many books.  Plus did you know that Rhys Ford has a new one coming out?  Shhh.  More about that later.  In the meantime, here is our schedule this week.  We have so many release day  reviews, I’m sure you will find books to add to you TBR pile.  Check them all out.

Plus we are still looking for reviewers.  Send us a email at scatteredthoughtsandroguewords@gmail.com if you want to review for our blog.

Its Lammas Day, Dog Days of August Are Here and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

solar circle year litha beltane yule samhain lunasa lammas candlemass equinox summer winter solstice spring autumn

Dog Days of August Are Here
Its Lammas Day

Dog Days of August Are Here and finally I can start to talk about some of my favorite summer subjects.  From the dog star Sirius to Mad Dogs and Englishmen prepare to be bombarded with all sorts of things starting this Sunday pertaining to the heat, the stars, folklore and crazy stuff.  Oh and books too.

The month of August and the heat associated with it has long brought out the craziness in humans and animals.  From the ancient Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans and even musicians such as Joe Cocker who pulled Mad Dogs and Englishmen”,from it’s the title of a famous song by Noel Coward (who credited Kipling and it probably went back further )for his song Mad Dogs and Englishman, the dog days of summer have been both an inspiration and more. See what I mean?

But today or more accurately tomorrow, its Lammas Day.  August 1st.  So that’s our first topic of conversation this month.  What’s Lammas Day you say?  Well, I should be asking author Susan Laine here to answer that question.  Her wonderful stories, The Wheel Mysteries, books 1 & 2 are now combined in one collection, revolve around a Wiccan main character and his P.I. boyfriend and take place during a Wiccan/Pagan holidays also called Sabbats.

Wiccan holidays, or Sabbats, are timed to the seasons and the Earth’s natural rhythms. Sabbats celebrate the Earth’s journey around the sun, called the Wheel of the Year, and Wiccans refer to commemorating the Sabbats as Turning the Wheel.

Most Wiccans celebrate these eight Sabbats annually:

  • Yule, Winter Solstice: December 20, 21, 22, or 23

Yule is the longest night and the shortest day of the year. Some Wiccans consider Yule to be either the year’s beginning or the end. This is the time to celebrate the return of the light. Yule is the solar turning of the tides, and the newborn Sun offers a fresh start and, literally, a new day. It’s a time of renewal and hope.

  • Brigid, Imbolc, Candlemas, Imbolg, or Brigid’s Day: February 1 or 2

Brigid, or Imbolc, is a preparation for spring. At Brigid, Wiccans clean and organize their living environments, as well as their minds and hearts, in preparation for the upcoming season of growth. It’s a time to shake off the doldrums of late winter and light the fires of creativity and inspiration.

  • Eostar, Spring Equinox, Ostara, or Oestarra: March 20, 21, 22, or 23

Winter is now over. Light is increasing. The day and night are equal in length at the equinox. Spring has arrived or is coming soon. Eostar is the time of fertility, birth, and renewal. The ice is thawing, and the growing season for plants and animals begins. Growth is the theme of the day.

  • Beltane, May Eve, Beltaine, Bealtaine, or May Day: April 30 or May 1

Beltane is the time of the marriage and union of the Goddess as Mother Earth and the God of the Greenwood. It is an ancient fertility festival marking the beginning of the planting cycle. The festival was to ensure a good growing season and a bountiful harvest. Beltane is light-hearted and joyful.

  • Litha, Summer Solstice, or Midsummer: June 20, 21, 22, or 23

Litha is the longest day and the shortest night of the year. Light triumphs, but will now begin to fade into darkness as autumn approaches. The crops are planted and growing. The woods and forests have reached their peak fullness. This is the time of abundance for wildlife, including people! The holiday is joyous.

  • Lughnasad, Lughnasadh, or Lammas: August 1

For the ancient Pagans, Lughnasad was a time of both hope and fear. They held hope for a bountiful harvest and abundant food, but they feared that the harvest wouldn’t be large enough and that the cold months would be filled with struggle and deprivation. At Lughnasad, modern Wiccans also face their fears, concentrate on developing their own abilities, and take steps to protect themselves and their homes.

  • Mabon, Fall Equinox, or Harvest Home: September 20, 21, 22, or 23

At Mabon, the day and the night are equal in length, in sublime balance. For many locations, Mabon coincides with the final harvest of grain, fruits, and vegetables. Mabon, also called Harvest Home, is the time of thanksgiving. The beauty and bounty of summer gives way to the desolation of winter, and the darkness overtakes the light.

  • Samhain, All Hallow’s Eve, Hallowmas: October 31 or November 1

For many Wiccans, Samhain marks the New Year and is the most important Sabbat. It’s the time to remember the ancestors, and the time to celebrate the harvest and all that has been accomplished over the year.

Lammas.  August 1st, Lammas Day, is generally celebrated as the “cross-quarter” day), the midpoint of summer. For most of northern hemisphere, it coincided with the harvest of wheat.  So Lammas is known as (Anglo-Saxon hlaf-mas, “loaf-mass”), the festival of the wheat harvest, and is the first harvest festival of the year. On this day it was customary to bring to church a loaf made from the new crop, which began to be harvested at Lammastide. The loaf was blessed, and in Anglo-Saxon England it might be employed afterwards to work magic: A book of Anglo-Saxon charms directed that the lammas bread be broken into four bits, which were to be placed at the four corners of the barn, to protect the garnered grain. In many parts of England, tenants were bound to present freshly harvested wheat to their landlords on or before the first day of August. In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, where it is referred to regularly, it is called “the feast of first fruits”.

So tomorrow, if you have the time…why not bake some fresh bread, think about your talents and how you want to develop them, or  any of the things that Lughnasad or Lammas stands for.  And why not pick up Susan Laine’s Wheel Mysteries while you are at it.  I love them.  There are three out at the moment, I keep waiting the rest to follow.  She is writing one for each Sabbat.  Happy Lammas Day.

Synopsis

After yet another bad dream, Leland accepts he can no longer keep his secret; the time had come to confess all to his best friend, Drew. He sets out early in the morning, determined yet fearful of Drew’s reaction to what he must tell him. Leland has loved Drew ever since they were teenagers and together they experimented with their sexuality, but Drew has only ever been his best friend. He dreads maybe even losing that when Drew learns the truth.

However, when halfway through the forest to Drew’s home, Leland is forced to take cover when he sees a large grey wolf tailing another man. His concern turns to shock when the man abruptly shifts to become a wolf and attacks the grey wolf.

The fight is swift and bloody and ends when the man-wolf runs off. Leland gets his second shock of the morning when the grey wolf abruptly shifts to become human. To become Drew. Too surprised to do more than watch as his now very naked best friend rushes off, Leland is in for yet another surprise when he finally confronts Drew later that morning.

Excerpt

Perhaps fate had decided enough was enough and given him that proverbial kick up the backside, letting him know it was time to tell Drew everything. He sighed. It was the last thing he wanted, but the time had come; he could put it off no longer.

He was just about to step out into a small clearing when he saw it—a large grey wolf, so dark as to be almost black. It was a beautiful specimen. Leland kept very still, not wanting to draw the animal’s attention. It looked as if the wolf was already trailing something by the way it was behaving. Even as he watched, the wolf sniffed the air and quickened its pace. Apparently, it had found its prey. As Leland slipped back behind the tree, shock slid through him as he spied the wolf’s target. It was a man.

Leland was of two minds what to do. His immediate reaction was to shout a warning, but that could induce the wolf to attack sooner. Cursing himself for being a fool, Leland ran as quietly and swiftly as he could around the clearing toward the unsuspecting victim. Sliding to a halt behind a large tree, Leland saw the wolf lowering itself, as if getting set to spring. Leland opened his mouth to yell a warning, but the man was not as unaware as Leland assumed. The man spun to face the wolf, snarling and growling as he tore the clothes from his body. Leland, his mouth still hanging open, watched in total shock.

Almost too fast for Leland to follow, the man’s form shifted and changed. From two feet, he dropped to all fours, fingers and toes becoming sharp claws. Pale skin sprouted dark brown fur as his face elongated and his teeth became sharp points frothed with saliva.

The two wolves leapt at each other, meeting mid-flight to clash and fall to the earth, landing on steady feet, teeth bared as they snarled at each other. They circled, gazes locked, until they charged again.

Leland gripped the tree so tightly the bark dug into his palms as he watched the two animals fight it out. He was battling the urge to run for safety, not sure if the wolves would break apart and come after him instead. His body was telling him to stay where he was, hopefully well and truly hidden, but his brain was debating how safe it would be when one of the animals won and sensed a new victim nearby. Even though he knew one of them was, in fact, a man who had changed—shifted?—into a wolf, Leland found it hard to think of it as anything but an animal. He certainly wasn’t behaving like a human as he bit and tore at the other wolf’s hide. Leland also wondered what sort of condition the man-wolf would be in, assuming he survived the fight. His body was already streaked with blood from the attack.

It appeared the two wolves were well matched; neither seemed able to gain the upper hand in the battle. The dark grey wolf suddenly leapt and landed hard on the man-wolf’s back and he let out a howl, which soon turned into a snarl as he fought his way from beneath the dark grey animal. With a snap of his jaws and a growl, the man-wolf turned and ran for the cover of the trees opposite where Leland was hiding. The dark grey wolf tensed, as if to follow, before it limped a few steps back, eyes constantly searching the surrounding trees to ensure the other wolf didn’t return. After a few minutes, the wolf sat on its haunches and began to lick at its wounds.

Leland allowed himself to relax a little, deciding it was best he stay where he was. He was pretty sure the wolf would sneak off to its den as soon as the animal felt secure enough to move on. He kept a close eye on it, not allowing his caution to slide, though after a minute or so, he did wonder if perhaps he was more shocked than he’d thought or if maybe he was more tired than he’d realized and his vision was affected. He couldn’t be seeing what he thought; he couldn’t!

But as he watched Drew Horton climb to his feet from where a second ago a dark grey wolf had sat, still rubbing at the long gash on his thigh, Leland could no longer refute what his eyes were showing him

Designs, Scattered Thoughts and More Decisions

So.  After much thought and  looking at designs, the poll, other sites, I’ve arrived at…nothing concrete.  But with input, we are getting closer.  Highest on the list readers want to see?  More reviews.  So on that front, we are looking for more reviewers so that we can handle more reviews here of every sort.  We are a LGBTQIA review site, that means we want to review books of LGBTQIA content…all LGBTQIA content.  From fiction to non fiction, to gay to lesbian, and all the genres you can think of.

We want to review them all.  We are doing good but we’d like to do better.  Also we are losing one of our reviewers this month.  BJ is moving on to writing full time and we wish her well.  She will be hard to replace.  But try we must as Yoda would say.  So if you love to read, are already reviewing books or want to try your hand at reviewing or know someone who reviews or any combination of the three, write us at scatteredthoughtsandroguewords@gmail.com.    Send us a link to some of your reviews or a sample too.  We have more than enough books to go around!

Meantime, as the heat wave continues in the US…its a perfect time to curl up with more books in ebook, audiobook or even paperback form.  Here some you might want to consider for your TBR list.  Meanwhile, its still July, so grab up those blueberries, hotdogs, and favorite scoops of ice cream and celebrate and the month ends.

Save Jake Venice Cover

Synopsis

When I heard Jake Venice had taken his life, I felt like I died with him. Suffocated by the fluff and fakeness of the plastic faces at his funeral, all I wanted to do was join him…wherever he was now.

I woke up the next morning with one last chance. Somehow, I was put ten days back, and I had one shot to try and save Jake. I drove across the country to find him, but when I did…How do you convince someone to hold on who’s already let go? How do you bring light to someone committed to the darkness? I have ten days to try.

Excerpt

No call from Jake. No call from the mechanics. As I take out my wallet to check on what cash I have left, the piece of paper falls out. It’s crinkled now. I unfold it.

One shot.

I look up and close my eyes, then stare at the words again. The future I remember seems like the dream now.

Did Jake really kill himself? Did I just dream it, and drove all the way out here only to be reminded of his rejection? But it was so real. I can’t abandon him in his darkness.

I fold the piece of paper back up and put it in my wallet.

Early evening and I’m back at the coffee shop, ordering my mocha and a ham sandwich. The barista grins, “The usual, huh?”

I already have a usual.

He’s mixing my drink as I catch his attention, “Do you know a Jake Venice?”

He looks at me sideways, “Is that, like, some kind of drink?”

“No, it’s a guy. He comes in here sometimes, I think. Glasses, goatee.”

The barista laughs, “That’s 90% of the dudes that come in here, man. Sorry.”

“He said he plays piano at some club around here on weeknights…any idea of where that might be?”

The barista swirls whipped cream onto my mocha and hands it to me, “That could be a lot of places. Check out the board by the door—customers put up posters and stuff there.” He hands me my sandwich, “Have a nice day.”

I devour my usual and then take a look at the large corkboard by the door. Posters and advertisements, one on top of the other, desperately vie for attention.

Despite all the screaming ads, an image catches my eye: Jake in a tux by a piano. He’s trying to look relaxed as a lounge singer, but his natural stiffness shines through even here.

Danny McGee’s Piano Bar in downtown…” I mumble to myself, fingers quivering as I punch the address into my phone. Perfect. It’s only a few minutes from the motel, just over the Potomac.

A cold wind picks up outside the bar, blowing my black jacket about and herding people inside for refuge. The fevered weather of the last few days is leaving.

Across the front, in bright cartoon letters, glows Danny McGee’s. Amplified piano reverberates from the walls, and my heart begins to pound. Another gale blows down the street, and the sky vomits rain. I flee for the doorway.
