An Alisa Review: The Undefendable (The Vampire Court Chronicles, #1) by Suede Delray

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Welcome to Vampire Court, where nothing is as it seems, where justice is swift and severe for the guilty, and the rules are not to be broken.

Meet Winter, a gorgeous, human-despising vampire accused of mass murder. Winter hides a secret that could clear him of the charge, a secret he fights to conceal. If known, it would be worse than the murder charge he faces.

Meet Dustin Belmont, fresh out of law school. He is also struggling, trying to jump-start his career, unable to turn down this job offer, no matter how weird these people seem.

Dustin is trying to wrap his head around who or what his new client is. Forced to spend a week at The Source, the bizarre vampire mansion preparing his case, Dustin will have loads of time to get to know his disagreeable, uncooperative client. But can Dustin even defend the gorgeous Winter when what he has done appears to be clearly undefendable?

This story wasn’t quite what I was thinking it would be but it was very interesting and took a while to really get going.  Winter isn’t quite as he seems and not what he has always known.  His family history has been kept from him his entire life and now it is coming for him.  Friends and Dustin are going a long way to help and support him as he tries to stop his brother.

Winter doesn’t understand the changes going on in him body and isn’t sure who to trust.  He ends up having to trust Dustin to try and save him but ends up trusting him with more.  Winter has been very lonely, with the vampire’s rule that they can’t have lasting relationships with humans he has not had any consistent companion for a long time.  I could feel Dustin’s confusion with this new world he is thrust into and his complete disbelief in the beginning, it takes him having to actually see it all happening for him to open up his mind to the world around him.  I am interested to see how this series continues and what will happen with these characters.

The cover art by Martine Jardin is nice and gives good visuals of the characters.

What We Are Thankful For In Books Continues and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

What We Are Thankful For In Books Month Continues

Our What We Are Thankful For In Books Month continues.  If you missed it last week, this month we are going to celebrate the things we’re grateful for…bookwise.    For some of us (myself included as you will see this week), its new authors (not new necessarily, but new to us or yes, just plain spanking new release new).  For others it may be new books that they read that they just think the world of and need to share!

Could be new narrators if you love audiobooks. How many times has a narrator made or broke a audiobook for you?  I can think of a audiobook I just listened to where the narrator was incredible and made the story fresh again…all it has to be is book related.

Could even be a new cover artist because in my mind they are so important when it comes to bringing a reader forward and getting them interested in a story, yes, even in this age of eReaders and eBooks.  Think of all those covers that made you laugh or made you dwell on their beauty?

This week I have an incredible Author and Series Discover/Highlight with J.M Dabney that you won’t want to miss on Thursday.  The author gives us insight into the characters and  their linked series that I’ve been reviewing for the past month and a half.  Plus what the future holds for any new series and her writing.  I was so happy with the interview and I hope you all will be too.

Last week I posed the question “What have you discovered or have found this year in books that you are grateful for?” and several of our readers have left some wonderful comments I wanted to share:

From H.B.:

“I think I’m always grateful that books seem to inspire being open minded and that authors choose to tackle subjects readers or people in general may be too scared to address or inquire about. I like that there have been an bigger influx of stories with ace and transgender characters, and mpreg stories.”

From Purple Reader:

“Great thought, H.B., and I couldn’t have said it better in this day and age. More specifically to my own reading, I was thankful I had enough time to get into some long-held tbr series in some of my fav genres and I loved them all, gay: fantasy (Gordon’s Champion of the Gods), mystery (Marshall Thornton’s Boystown), historical naval/pirates (Kei’s Pirates of the Narrow Seas), scifi/dystopia (Hassell’s ICoS), Steampunk (Hall’s Prosperity), action/adventure (Bauer’s Executive Office), and western (anthology, Once Upon a Time in the Weird West)… ok, you found me out, I pretty much like any gay genre, as long as it’s good.”

So let’s from from more of you….what are you thankful for in books this year?  What’s stood out for you?  Stella, the gift certificate fairy is waiting in the wings with arms full of certs!  And we have plenty of the month to go!

An Alisa Review: Good Things (Roguefalls #4) by April Kelley

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Sometimes doing right by others means giving up on your own happiness and sometimes it’s just stubbornly resisting the best Fate has to offer.

Good things never happen in a continuous stream for Jalen Etters. He has a job he loves, a roof over his head, and all the food he could eat. He even flirts with a sexy little barista named Markie. When he finds himself hiding out from human soldiers on his construction job site, he thinks his good streak is over. Thankfully, Rico, a hawk shifter, is sent to save him, so the good streak is still intact. Then he finds out Rico is his mate but he’s in love with Markie. Maybe his good streak is over after all.

I was looking forward to this story and seeing these characters finally get their own story after seeing them in the last few.  Jalen has lived his life for his brothers forever and is willing to give up his own happiness for those he loves.  Markie and Rico have danced around each other for a long time and just as either of them are willing to make a move Jalen is thrown into the mix.

Jalen has trouble giving up control of everything and trying to figure out everything with his mates makes that even harder.  I hurt for Markie and Rico when Jalen just seemed to give up hope and wouldn’t respond to anything or anyone.  Markie really shows how he cares and is willing to push in order to break through the walls around Jalen’s heart and finally show his feelings towards Rico.  Rico seemed to think he had everything figured out but it didn’t mean they were all up to his way of thinking and I was happy to see them all finally get past the barriers in their way.

The cover art by Erin Dameron-Hill is nice and follows the pattern for the series.

An Alisa Review: Wrong Place, Right Time (Roguefalls #3) by April Kelley

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

He only knows one way of life, and that’s hand to mouth, but when a soldier offers him something better, it’s difficult to trust something so freely given.

Uri Etters is very good at getting himself into trouble. Good thing for him he knows how to handle most criminals. He finds himself in need of a rescue when some territorial crow shifters think he’s an enemy spy. Virion might have swooped in and saved the day, but it’s been Uri’s experience that nothing comes free, not even from a respected Rogue soldier. Uri discovers love comes easier than trust.

This was a nice continuation of this series.  Uri and his brothers have been relying on themselves since their mother’s death living as singles.  Virion wants to take him away from that and help his brothers at the same time.

We see both Uri and Virion work through their own emotions and learn how to navigate a relationship let alone a mating.  They both need a little bit of sense knocked into them but what stubborn male doesn’t.  I was a bit confused on the conflict Uri was found in because I could swear it was the same conflict as before Christian went after Ward but they are both there and together in this book unless it was a different one but it left me scratching my head.  I look forward to seeing more of those in Roguefalls.

The cover art by Erin Dameron-Hill is great and follows the pattern for the series.

An Alisa Review: Resistance (Roguefalls #2) by April Kelley

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Christian Martin has been in several battles in his life, but the one he has with his mate may just be the one that brings him to his knees.

Christian has never had a serious relationship in his life. He doesn’t plan to start with an alpha wolf shifter who thinks he can dictate what Christian is and isn’t going to do. Ward Malone might trigger every warning bell Christian has, but he also triggers every sexual fantasy. Christian wouldn’t mind giving in to Ward if fun was all he wanted. Unfortunately, Ward is an all-or-nothing kind of guy.

This was another good story in this series.  We saw Christian and Ward meet at the end of the last book and I was excited to see their story.  Christian has never really had a family and makes a point to not allow close connections with anyone other than Dylan.  Ward throws all of his feelings and plans out of whack.

We learn a little more about the world in which these characters live and how much Christian’s childhood has affected his adult life.  Ward thinks he has everything figured out with how their future looks but gets a rude awakening with the others’ reactions.  Both Christian and Ward have to learn to make some compromises for them to work together.

We get to see both of these characters while they work out their feelings for each other and, for Christian, those around them.  Ward is confused by Christian’s reaction to him and is willing to walk away if that is what he really wants.  I loved seeing Christian’s team make him really see that there are people there for him and give him the opportunity to go after his mate.

The cover art by Erin Dameron-Hill is nice and follows the pattern for the series.

A MelanieM Review: A Place for Dreams by Deja Black

Rating:  2 stars out of 5

Raksha has arrived from Nepal, along with his people, to reclaim his mate, but Cole Brightside is a young man afraid of a past he doesn’t fully remember. The two have only connected in Cole’s dreams, where Raksha is both beast and man. Now, Raksha wants them together again in the real world.
Can Cole make it past his own fears to become the man Raksha needs him to be? Can Raksha accept who Cole has become?
Can they find a place for dreams?

A Place for Dreams by Deja Black is a story that has a neat promise, a yeti as one of the main characters and what could have been a sweet, lovely lovers reunited romance.  And it is for some of it, but it is also a confused tale where too much mythology gets squished together along with a back history that it turns garbled and the ending is just plain confusing.

I read it twice and still went ‘huh’ in places.

Cole is a well drawn character with a history that brings the mystery as well as the mythology (a voice in his head and nightmares from childhood).  Then the person from his dreams actually appears in front of him and I just didn’t buy into the story at all.  I love these books but the  author wasn’t able to pull me into their world enough to connect me to their relationship or myth building.  So it just didn’t work at all from there on out.

I liked the idea that Cole wasn’t just prepared to drop everything just because Raksha showed up and said he was someone else.  That alone made sense.  I wish most of the  rest of the story  had done the same.

Cover art has none of the mystical elements you would expect for this story.  I consider it a miss.

An Alisa Review: Human Instincts (Roguefalls #1) by April Kelley

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

A human soldier and an omega wolf shifter find out they’re mates in a world where segregation between humans and paranormals is standard operating procedure.

Dylan Kole knows how to do one thing, and that’s to be a soldier in the human army. He doesn’t know how to fit in with a bunch of paranormal beings, and he certainly doesn’t know how to be a mate to Rudy Malone, the only omega wolf shifter on Roguefalls Island. One thing Dylan does have going for him is his ability to follow his instincts.

This was an interesting and entertaining story.  Dylan and his buddy, Christian, are selected to become a part of the paranormal army.  Both know some things but are a bit unprepared for everything that comes up, especially the whole mate thing.  Rudy is so happy to find his mate while Dylan is confused by his reaction to the man and tries to take a step back.  But he can’t resist for long.

The world is a bit different with humans living in family groups or as singles (which are usually criminals) and paranormals living in clans so they don’t feel as if they get many choices on what they want to do with their life; Dylan was kicked out of his family group and joined the human army to avoid becoming a single.  He is so puzzled by his instincts to protect and love on Rudy; he has always believed that he will be alone since he was kicked out.  Rudy came to Roguefalls to provide a calming presence but to also get some distance from his over protective brother and he will not let his mate do the same thing to him.

We get to see both of these characters working through their thoughts and coming to terms with how they feel for each other.  These two know how they feel but are a bit lost on what to do and do end up taking time to get to know each other a bit before a claiming.  I can’t wait to see what happens between Christian and Ward in the next story.

The cover art by Erin Dameron-Hill is nice and a typical romance cover with the view of a man’s midsection.

A Paul B Review: Sealed With Acceptance (Signed, Sealed, Delivered #5) by Caitlin Ricci and A.J. Marcus

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Adrian screwed up big time three years ago.  While at a party that his boyfriend did not want to go to, Adrian got drunk and had sex with a stranger.  Three years later, he still cannot recall details of the incident.  He does recall how he broke Jacob’s heart.  Now, his parents are asking him to move on from Jacob as they intend to mate his younger brother Charlie with Jacob.  He must meet with Jacob in order to patch things up as thing could get awkward at family gatherings otherwise.

The past three years have been hard on Jacob.  He never thought Adrian would cheat on him but he did.  Being drunk at the time doesn’t matter.  Jacob believes he will not be able to trust Adrian again.  He is surprised to receive a call from him after agreeing to mate with Charlie.  Of course Adrian picks THEIR spot to meet on the beach, where they would shift into their whale (Jacob) and crab (Adrian) forms.  Even after the betrayal, Jacob has not really moved on.  He had played with West, the young cougar shifter who helps Jacob take care of his mother who has early onset Alzheimer’s.  He knows how important Adrian and Charlie’s parents feel that the two families should come together, but he does not love Charlie.  Even though they seem to be a good fit on paper, Charlie will always be Adrian’s kid brother to him.

When Jacob comes over for dinner with Adrian, Charlie and his parents, things hit the fan.  Charlie, believing that Adrian and Jacob are meant to be together, believes this might be a step toward reconciliation.  When he finds out that he Is to be mated to Jacob, he explodes.  Charlie wants to mate for love, not for some alliance that would further the family’s standing in the community.  He runs out of the house with his parents chasing after him.  Meanwhile, Adrian and Jacob talk some more and Adrian comes to the conclusion that Jacob will never really forgive him to try again.  Charlie deserves a good man and there are none better the Jacob.  But it still hurts like hell.  He sees that nobody here is winning (except maybe his parents) and cannot find a way to make it better.  Luckily Charlie has a plan to make things better.

I enjoyed this fifth book in the Signed, Sealed, Delivered series a bit more than the others I have read.  While the parents are once again heavy handed in trying to control their sons’ futures, the children take matters into their own hands sooner than in other books.  You would think parents in this day and age would care more about their children’s happiness instead of antiquated ideals of the past.  The thing I found interesting is that Jacob’s mother is struggling with Alzheimer’s.  In most shifter books, they are immune from human diseases.  While not as progressive as the human variety, Jacob’s mother suffers just the same.  Charlie is one determined young man and I cannot wait to see what plans he has for West in a future book.

Latrisha Waters provides a good cover for the book.  Adrian is seen with an opened button down shirt while Jacob’s whale is swimming in the background.  This is a fairly standard cover for this series.
