A MelanieM Review: All Note Long (Perfect Harmony #3) by Annabeth Albert

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5

All Note LongGiving true love a spin . . .

Michelin Moses is a country music star on the rise. With a hit single under his Texas-sized belt buckle and a sold-out concert tour underway, his childhood dreams of making it big are finally coming true. But there’s one thing missing—a promise to his dying mother that he’d find it—him—when the time was right. With a little luck, he won’t have to wait too long . . .

Lucky Ramirez is a hunky boy toy who dances at The Broom Closet, one of West Hollywood’s hottest gay bars. He loves what he does, and he’s good at it—almost as good as he is at playing dumb when he spots Michelin Moses at the bar. What happens next is off the charts—and keeps Michelin coming back for more. He’s just not sure it’s the right move for his career. But if Lucky gets his way, Michelin will get Lucky—and no matter how the media spins it, neither of them will be faking it . . .

I picked up All Note Long (Perfect Harmony #3) by Annabeth Albert because of the author not because I read the previous stories in the series.  I’m going to have to rectify that, and not just because I love her writing.  I loved this story and the characters.

As with any Annabeth Albert story, its her characters that pull me into their lives, immediate situations and dramas.  Here its Michelin Moses, closeted country singer in a gay bar for a friend’s bash and a dancer called Lucky.  The clash between the two is that immediate as is the attraction which goes wrong because of Michelin’s attitude.  Which is not what you might expect of a popular country singer.  Michelin might be the anthesis of your image of what pops into your mind when those words come up.  He’s withdrawn, insecure, and so unable to stick up for himself that yes, the phrase doormat might leap to mind.  Except that it doesn’t.  At least for me.

Why?  Because Albert dives deep into the reasoning behind Michelin’s thoughts, feelings and actions.  If you aren’t behind the fact that he is acting that way, the author certainly let’s you understand why he is behaving in such a fashion.  And you feel sorry for him and cheer for him as the changes take place as the story moves forward.

Lucky?  Well, howdy and hey there!  What’s not to love about Lucky?  Although not without flaws as well because Albert writes human, Lucky has his own issues with regard to Michelin but he has a great family and support system.  I loved his family and wish we could have spent more time with them.  Plus again, the author gives us dogs!!!  Another weakness of mine.

At the beginning of each chapter are some wonderful tweets from fans that helps move the story forward.  I believe it occurs in each story in the series but as this is the first story that I’ve read I think its a marvelous tool and I loved it.  Each tweet sparkled with life and felt real.  Just that extra touch I’ve come to expect from this terrific author.

Toward the end there’s this wonderful moment, the sort you wait for in every book.  Here Annabeth Albert delivers such a perfect “awww moment” that you’ll be crying, its that good.    And now I need to go and get the others in the series.  See what else I missed.  But this works perfectly as a standalone.  So if you’re like me and haven’t read the others, pick this one up, and get reading.  You’ll love the story of Michelin and Lucky.  I highly recommend them and this story.  And Annabeth Albert of course.

Cover art doesn’t do much for me.  Could be the cover for just about any story.

A Lila Audiobook Review: The President’s Husband by Michael Murphy and Randy Fuller (Narrator)

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

the-presidents-husband audioWhen an assassin’s bullet strikes his predecessor, Grayson Alexander becomes the first openly gay President of the United States and his husband, David Hammond, becomes the first openly gay First Husband. With their world turned upside down, David relies on his career as a medical school professor and ER doctor to keep him grounded. But his decision to keep working ruffles feathers from day one.

Gray throws himself into learning everything he needs to know to be President, especially a liberal president surrounded by a conservative cabinet and staff. Even though he puts in outrageous hours working and traveling seven days a week month after month, he’s happy. But David has trouble coping with Gray’s new job requirements. He can’t help but feel abandoned by his husband of ten years.

When Gray asks for his help with a public-health crisis, David obliges, but he is furious about what happens once the emergency passes. When they learn that the President’s staff has manipulated them both, they wonder if their relationship can survive the White House.

The President’s Husband is a remarkable read. If you’re looking for a political thriller, a steamy romance, or a drama, this is not it. This story is solely about the relationship between the newly appointed President of the United States and his husband of ten years.

We get to meet David and Gray during the Presidential Inauguration. The author gave us a hint of their relationship and how comfortable they are with each other. After ten years of marriage, they knew each other well and respected their individual careers and their dedication to them.

David and Gray have a great chemistry that it’s easy to feel during the entire story, even when they weren’t together. They have an active sex life, which the reader gets to hear more about than actually be witness to, but it works with the focus on their marriage. The on-page sex isn’t there to arouse the reader but to complement the couple’s relationship.

The political discussions are minimal since we only get David’s POV. There’s enough to set the stage for the book, but mostly, everything seems separate from the main plot. Yes, politics kept them apart, but the policies and procedures aren’t the main reason for it.

I think they are more medical references and information in the story than politics. The medical crisis David helps Gray with is the main point of content between them. There are a lot of details about what happens during this time, and some parts may be a little monotonous.

There’s a lot of drama involve in this novel, and David takes the center stage. We pass a significant amount of time in his head, making it difficult to get to know Gray. In reality, David is the main character and Gray is just his husband. We don’t get to see the antagonist doing his bidding, just mentions of him. It isn’t until the climax that we get to see the extent of his involvement.

David and Gray interact with a high amount of characters, but we only get to learn the names of a handful. David’s experiences are more important than how he gets them. Gray’s not a strong character, but he’s likable enough. I like David and how he took life by the horns, but he was a bit whiny in certain areas.

In order to enjoy this story, you need to be in the right frame of mind. You have to forget about everything you know about the President and how his family is handled. There aren’t meddling family members or best friends. David takes all his decisions using logic and tries to retain the status quo instead of rocking the boat. And this cost them both deeply.

Overall, this is a story about marriage and how communication is essential in a relationship. They could have solved a lot of problems with a simple conversation, but the rest of the drama is just an added bonus. I’m surprised by the lower rating in this story, but I think is more of a case of expecting a different story.

Personally, I’d had them get a divorce and become friends instead, but that’s just me. I enjoyed their courting and how they fought to be back together. I think Gray’s POV was needed. Plus, I think they were too young for their level of accomplishments.

This is my first story narrated by Randy Fuller. He did an excellent job, not only with the characters’ voices but with the feelings behind their exchanges. Also, I love how mature his voice is. It made it easier to visualize the main characters as older men with established careers instead of young men trying to figure out life. He also incorporated the omniscient narrator and gave it its own tone.

The cover by L.C. Chase goes with the story, but it’s hard to see the two men like David and Gray. There weren’t enough details in the story to have a clear picture of what they look like.

A MelanieM Review: Undercover Boyfriend (One Fine Day #1) by Jacob Z. Flores

Rating: 5 Stars out of 5

Undercover BoyfriendTwo men, one lie, and a whole bunch of trouble.

Marty Valdez is in serious trouble. His sister’s wedding is around the corner, and everyone expects to meet Marty’s super-successful underwear model boyfriend—whom Marty invented. Now Marty has to produce a half-naked hottie or suffer the worst humiliation of his life.

FBI agent Luke Myers is in serious trouble. He’s been working undercover to take down a dangerous drug cartel, but his cover’s blown and he needs to disappear. Luckily, a geeky yet intriguing comic book artist gives him the perfect opportunity. Luke just has to pretend to be his boyfriend, and pretending is what he does best. But between Marty’s mother and his ex, Luke might’ve bitten off more than he can chew, and Marty’s knack for finding trouble might ruin more than just his sister’s wedding.

Undercover Boyfriend by Jacob Z. Flores is a perfect example why I love this series.  It takes the Harlequin type plot and romance, gives it a M/M couple and then elevates it again with characters I adored, a plot that, while you couldn’t expect to take it seriously all the time, was just real enough to believe in, and a ending to keep you smiling hours after you put the book/Kindle/Nook down.

Another huge plus?  The author is making it into a series. Win win.

Like the blurb, you have to start the review with the characters and Marty Valdez.  Oh Marty.  Marty has spent his life running away from things by creating fake people to help him out of situations, from playdates in childhood he wanted to avoid to his sister’s wedding now that he has to attend with a boyfriend he’s made up.  Fake friends have always worked before but now he has to produce.  In other  hands, Marty would come off perhaps unlikable, sad even but in Jacob Z. Flores’s characterization, you get Marty.  You understand him, and he’s so darn cute and funny and easy to love….well, you’re on his side immediately.  And you just know he’s the type to fall into the trouble walking around the corner.

That’s Luke Myers, the FBI agent deep undercover.  Luke is a character that Flores uses to play off Marty to perfection and I liked the way he comes alive within the Valdez household.  We get a 2 person pov  here, one being Luke’s and that works well for both furthering our connection to the characters and moving the storyline along quickly.

Yes, back to the plot.  The drug cartel.  That’s never forgotten, as it could have been here.  It slithers along, like a deadly little threat to their growing romance, poking up here and there to remind us of its presence.  Loved that effect and its smash bang blowup was thrilling. *fans*

So, this book has it all for me.  A great couple, wonderful romance, and a thriller to boot.  And we are getting a new series out of it too.  I can’t wait for the next book to be released.  Want a new romance?  Need a new couple to root for and fall in love with?  Pick up Undercover Boyfriend by Jacob Z. Flores.  I highly recommend it.  Then join me in waiting for the next story in the series.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is great.  I can see that being Luke Myers.

Blurb

In all his relationships, Darren Fielding never found the level of intimacy he witnessed between Thomas Williams and his sub, Peter, the day of Peter’s “rebirth.” Not only that, he never realized such intimacy was possible. For two years, Thomas’s business card has been burning a hole in his wallet. When Darren’s lover moves on, maybe it’s finally time to see where that card takes him.

Collars & Cuffs’s new barman, JJ Taylor, is really conflicted right now. He went to the club with a very specific purpose, already convinced of what he’d find there. Except it’s not what he expected at all. He certainly didn’t anticipate finding himself drawn to the new wannabe Dom. Nor could he have guessed the direction that attraction would lead him.

Old love, new love, vows, pain, rage, moving in, moving on…. The members of Collars & Cuffs face an event that touches some of them deeply, but it will only reinforce what they already know: together they are stronger, and some bonds cannot be broken.

A pang hit Joe in the heart as watched as Ben led Scott to the group room. He knew that they only had eyes for each other, and that made him both happy and sad. When Leo had asked him to help remove Ben’s head from his arse, he thought it would be a lark. Something fun to pass the time. But he hadn’t counted on how the little redhead reacted toward him. He could see the fear in Scott’s eyes, and he hated it. No sub should be afraid. Not ever.

He never told anyone how it had gone. How he had come to the house with a thought in his mind about how it would go, then left with an ache he couldn’t explain. He’d never, ever mooned over a sub. He’d shared one many times, with the sub’s permission. And the sex had been phenomenal, but he noticed recently that it also left him with a pit in his stomach.

He let his gaze wander over the room, until it fell on Christian kneeling in submission. The boy seemed to be popular. Always going off with a Dom, then coming back with a smile on his beautiful face. But it didn’t really reach his eyes. Joe could see the touch of sadness there, and it tugged at his heart. He tried to tell himself that it wasn’t him. He wasn’t cut out to be with a single submissive. That playing with multiple partners made him happy. And it had. At least for a time. But seeing the men at Collars & Cuffs pairing off, finding love? That told him something had to change.

He stood and approached Christian, who seemed to be off in his own little world. As he ran a hand over Christian’s head, the boy sucked in a breath. “Good evening, Master Joe.”

Joe couldn’t believe Christian knew it was him. “How did you know?”

He could see a smile creep over Christian’s face. “You’re wearing Acqua Di Gio. I’d know you anywhere.”

Joe couldn’t believe it. “Look at me, boy.”

Christian tilted his head back, and Joe got lost in those amazingly beautiful eyes. “Would you like to play?”

“Yes, Sir. I would love to.”

Joe took him to the group room, and had him strip down, and kneel. Christian was wonderful in his submission. He wanted this boy. He craved him with every fiber of his being. When one of the other Doms came over, Joe recognized him as someone with whom he’d shared before. The broad smile on his face evaporated as Joe shook his head no. The Dom nodded, and went off looking for a partner for the evening. Joe glanced around, and he could see the lustful expressions on many faces. Everyone he’d shared a sub with, and his stomach bubbled.

“Stand up,” Joe ordered. “Get dressed.”

Christian stood and blinked. “If I’ve made you unhappy, Sir, I—“

“No, not in the least. I don’t’ want to have you here. I’d like to take you to a private room, if you’re willing.”

Christian smiled, and Joe’s heart beat faster. “Of course, Sir. Whatever you want.”

He took Christian by the hand, and led him to the bar where he grabbed a key to one of the rooms. When they entered, he closed and locked the door, before turning to Christian.

“Safe words?”

“Red for stop. Yellow for slow down. Green to continue.”

“Very well. Take off your clothes.”

He stood and watched as Christian unveiled a lithe body. He trembled as his hand reached out to stroke the smooth chest, delighting when Christian shivered. Joe loved to see the goose flesh that stood out on the pale form in front of him.

“So you would know me anywhere?” Joe asked.

“Yes, Sir. Others may wear Acqua Di Gio, but you’re unique. You smell fresh, and…”

Christian paused and glanced down.

“And what?”

“When I smell you, I get hard.”

Joe reached down and stroked the rigid shaft. “Yes, I can see that.” He laughed at the red that bloomed over Christian’s body. It was then that he made a decision.

“I’m sorry to be so indecisive, but I’d like you to put your clothes back on.” He held up a hand to forestall any queries by the young man. “No questions.”

Christian meekly said, “Yes, Sir,” and proceeded to dress again. When he was done, he stood there in a maroon T-shirt and a pair of black jeans. Joe had seen many subs wearing leather, but this look favored Christian. He wanted to touch again, but that wasn’t fitting in with his plan.

“I’m going to go to the lockers and change. I want you to sit at the bar and wait for me. Is that okay?”

“Yes, Sir.”

They left the room and headed downstairs. Christian sat at the bar, and said hello to Kenton. Joe found he didn’t really care for it. He didn’t want anyone talking with Christian, and it disturbed him. He’d never cared before. Hell, he’d been happy when the sub started talking to someone else, because it meant he didn’t need to make conversation after their scene and aftercare.

Excerpt

“Honey, I’m home.”

Alex laughed and came out of the kitchen to greet his husband. “We’ve talked about this, right? You do not walk into this apartment and talk to me like I’m the little wife.”

Leo kissed him soundly on the cheek. “Aw, but you’d look great in an apron, holding a glass of beer out for your weary, hard-working hubby.” He smirked. “And besides, no one in their right mind would call you little.”

Alex quirked his eyebrows. “One, you don’t drink beer, which is why there’s a glass of chilled chardonnay on the living room table, waiting for you. Two, excuse me—weary? Hard-working? You’ve been standing around in leather chaps and a harness, watching while guys do all manner of things to each other, which probably included a lot of fucking, because, hey, it’s Saturday night, right?”

Leo sighed happily. “What can I say? I love my job.”

Meet K.C. Wells:

Born and raised in the north-west of England, K.C. WELLS always loved writing. Words were important. Full stop. However, when childhood gave way to adulthood, the writing ceased, as life got in the way. K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, when the purchase of a ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot. In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings—writing about men in love was even hotter….

K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career. The laptop still has no idea of what hit it… it only knows that it wants a rest, please. And it now has to get used to the idea that where K.C goes, it goes.

And as for those men in love that she writes about? The list of stories just waiting to be written is getting longer… and longer….

Meet Parker Williams (or at least his voices):

Good day! We are the voices that live inside Will’s head. The ones who whisper to him constantly, beckoning him to speak of our adventures, to tell of our love, and perhaps, if we’re in a mood, kill a person or two.

We guide his hand as he tells our tales where love is the most powerful force, but must be worked for, molded, and finally, embraced. There can be no shortcuts or substitutions on the path to a happily ever after.

We hope you will join with us as Will fulfills his obligation to ensure our stories are told and, we hope, enjoyed.

A MelanieM Review: Beta Test (#gaymers #2) by Annabeth Albert

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5

Beta TestPlayer vs. Player. Fight!

Brilliant graphic designer Ravi Tandel is ahead of the game—he’s just been asked to present a top secret project at a huge conference in Seattle. All systems are go…until he learns his buttoned-up office nemesis is coming along for the ride.

Tristan Jones isn’t really the gamer type, but he knows the back end of the video game business inside out. Together, he and Ravi will give an awesome presentation. If they survive the cross-country trip first.

Tossed together in close quarters, Ravi’s shocked to see Tristan’s sexy, softer side emerge from such a conservative shell. He’s less shocked to learn his handsome colleague’s prominent family would never support an out-and-proud son. But Ravi didn’t struggle through his own coming out to hide who he is now. To be together, Tristan will have to push past his fear and ultimately decide: Does he want a future with Ravi? Or is it game over before they’ve even begun?

A rock solid fan of Annabeth Albert, the first story in this series, Status Update. also made me one of the series.  It couldn’t be helped really.  The series theme was a hook.  Gaymers?  You bet.  Plus Albert then went on to delight/frustrate me by creating a game that was both real enough that I could believe in it yet couldn’t download it and play the heck out of it.  That would be the popular videogame, Space Villager.  So I couldn’t wait to see where the author was going to take this series, and potentially, the game next.  My answer was Beta Test, a story I loved almost as much as the 5 star story that preceded it.  It was only a tiny smidge less, barely noticeable.

Geoarchaeologist Noah Walters and video game designer Adrian Gottlieb of Status Update are a hard act to follow-they had dogs (and we run into them again here) but once again Albert creates two layered, flawed and absolutely interesting men to connect with.   We meet both of them on their first day in the employee conference room at Space Villager.  And two more difference men upon appearance you couldn’t ask for.  Ravi is gorgeous, outgoing, graphic designer…so vibrant he leaps from the page.  Tristan is all tightness, awkwardness personified, and walled in.  The buttons on his shirt should probably go over his head he’s so buttoned up.  Yet, he’s also so appealing in his need to be there and his fears are understandable even if they don’t show to his colleagues.  The fact that we know these two will find each other starts the anticipation building.  Which brings up a plus for me.

I’m a huge fan of the slow ride to romance and love which Annabeth Albert does so well.  No slam bam thank you sir…which is fine too btw.  But I love the long path to relationships, the figuring things out, the slip-ups, the two steps (or more) back for every one going forward.  And yes, there’s plenty of that here, with both mens backgrounds and families. In the first book, and again here, its a road trip that serves to cement the men together.  Albert has either been to these places (most likely), done her research or both and its shows.  Wait ’til you visit Weed with Ravi and Tristan!  But its so much more. Its the game, its the pulling together for the show, and other employees…who also feel as real as everything else in this outstanding story.

My only complaint?  Annabeth Albert is making me wait for the next story in the series!  I want more.  More of these couples.  More of Space Villager.  More most certainly of this terrific writer whose stories flow so effortlessly from page 1 to the end, keeping me captivated, hooked on the couple and game right up until the last period.

Love contemporary romance?  Annabeth Albert?  Any combination of those?  Pick this and the story that starts the series up.  I love them and highly recommend them both.

Cover is terrific and perfect for the story.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Endings and Beginnings (Collars and Cuffs #8) by K.C. Wells and Parker Williams

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Endings and BeginningsI’m struggling with writing this review because I was so emotional by the end I had to wait a few days to allow my heart to calm enough to let my brain take over. I really loved this series. Each of the stories, from the beginning through this last, has featured amazing characters. Sometimes heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking, each of the books featuring the many couples who populate Collars & Cuffs, an exclusive BDSM club for gay men, have felt realistic and genuine.

In this one, an ending of sorts for a few of the couples, I appreciated the way the authors focused on a new couple while weaving vignettes throughout the book, featuring the other Doms and subs we have come to love. Principally, this story is about Darren, the salon owner we met when Thomas was helping Peter overcome the emotional ravages of the time of his enslavement (Trusting Thomas). He never forgot how affected he was while observing that intimate moment with them. This story is also about JJ, the new bartender who came to the job in the hopes he’d be able to expose the lies Peter told about Curtis Rogers, the Dom who had abused him. Instead, JJ found that Curtis, the man who JJ recently found out was his father, was worse than the press painted him to be, and when he glimpses Peter’s back for the first time, he breaks down and admits his parentage and his reasons for being there.

Darren had been attracted to JJ from the time Darren first walked in the door to see what the club was like so he could decide if he dared to cultivate his dominant side. And though they had already started to date when the revelation occurred, Darren feels an overwhelming protectiveness toward the young man and vows to take care of him. Poor JJ is so emotionally broken and adrift, feeling he’s been lied to and abandoned by those who should have cared for him that he finds it difficult to trust in Darren, and trust is the foundation most needed for couples to survive together.

As their story unfolds, we see glimpses of most of the Doms and subs from the past, and there’s a focus on Scott and Ben (Someone to Keep Me) as their long postponed wedding day finally arrives. There’s also a secondary story about Eli and Jarod (Dom of Ages), now back from their Hawaiian vacation. Eli finds himself restless and without a purpose since he quit his job with the trucking company. Thomas offers a solution, one that Jarod can well afford, but if he and Eli take the offer, it will take Jarod from the family he has come to love. The other subs are such a part of his life now, he’s not sure if he can abandon them. There’s also a story about Pietro and Miles, back from their vacation as well, but still not living together, and Pietro is pretty upset about that. How can Miles love him and yet go home to his own place at night? And… there’s a glimpse into the future for Alex and Leo as Alex takes an opportunity he once thought was out of his reach.

As I started the book, I was very worried the authors were going to give someone a major illness or other life threatening issue, but I’m happy to say that’s not a concern here. Yes there are endings, but there are also beginnings, and I hope and pray that one of those beginnings is the beginning of a new series because I can’t get enough of these guys. I find it difficult to decide which couple in this series is my favorite but it’s definitely either Thomas and Peter or Eli and Jarod, and if my hopes are realistic, we may all get to see more of them in the future.

My gosh, I hate to see this series end! Most of the books don’t contain “hard core” BSDM. Some, including this one, are quite mild so that shouldn’t be of concern to readers who haven’t read any with a BDSM theme previously. And, for those who have, if you haven’t read this series, don’t hesitate to start.

Cover art by Paul Richmond features a beautiful black-and-white photo of a naked man bound with rope, kneeling in submission. Perfect!

A BJ Review: Staged (Belonging #3) by Kim Fielding

Rating:    5 stars out of 5

Staged_600x900Once the second-prize winner on My Slave’s Got Talent, Sky Blue has spent the past few years singing at a failing New York nightclub. While Sky has never had control over his fate, his life seems to take a turn for the worse when he’s torn from the familiar comfort of performing and sold to a rich and enigmatic man.

Morgan Wallace takes his newly purchased slave to San Francisco, his intentions unclear. On the one hand, he treats Sky with more kindness than Sky has ever known—treats him like a real person. On the other hand, he shares Sky at parties hosted by his sadistic new friends.

A confused slave is an endangered slave, and Sky isn’t even sure of his master’s real name. Is he Morgan Wallace, wealthy and cruel, or Mackenzie Webster, caring and compassionate? Caught between hope, fear, and an undeniably growing attachment, Sky struggles to untangle which parts are real and which are merely a performance. His future, his heart, and even his life may depend on it.

First off, I’ve not read any of the previous books in this series, but I was told it was merely in the same universe and cold be read as a standalone. After reading it, I can assure anyone considering doing the same that I never felt like I didn’t understand anything during reading this story.

I’ve been interested in the series and had already purchased but not yet read the first book, but when I was offered the ARC of this one, I couldn’t turn it down since I’ve enjoyed every single book I’ve read by this author. And a few of them I’ve even loved. Might as well say right off the bat that Staged falls firmly into the loved category. This story sucked me in from page one and was one of those rare books that I hated to put down and was almost sorry to see end.

This isn’t the first book in which this author has ventured to the dark side, but readers should be aware that there is non-con, violence, and some pretty horrific  torture scenes. Which for me, made the sweet and tender scenes amidst it stand out all the more. Sky and Morgan/Mac are two of the most enthralling main characters I’ve read in a while. Sky is a slave in a world where folks say that slaves aren’t like others, don’t feel emotions the same, aren’t fit to care for themselves. And yet Sky is, as Morgan/Mac says, just the most amazing person. He enthralled me from the beginning. The entire story is written from Sky’s POV. Very often in single POV stories, at some point I find myself wanting to get into the head of the other character for more depth and insight, but that was never at all the case here. It was perfect the way it was written.

There were so many feels wound into this. It touched my heart and made me say “Awww”, then turned around and horrified me. It also at parts alternately had me tears-eyed, irate, on the edge of my seat, and stupidly proud. Sky’s personality really starts to unfold and bloom as he’s allowed for the first time to experience all of the many bits and parts of life that were withheld from him which exhilarates and confuses him. He experiences TLC for the first time, but is understandably too confused and fearful to be able to trust in it. Watching him find pleasure and joy in small things and living in the moment even when he knows that more bad is coming because he has been warned to expect it. So poignant to see him learn in tiny sips what it feels like to be in control for short periods of time, to make decisions on his own, to read and search the net and learn things about the world. But it wasn’t all feeling, as there are also many bits that made me think.

Morgan/Mac, a man who’d never owned a slave but had an awful childhood of his own driving him, also grows a lot in this book as he discovers that all he’s accepted about slavery is wrong. And as he begins to lose his heart to a slave. Right from the start, he seems in awe of him. Throughout a lot of story, Morgan is left a bit of an enigma, and yet through Sky’s narrations, we see his heart come out, see what kind of man he seems to be.

I’m going to stop as I don’t want to go into the story much beyond the blurb. This his story has motivated me to make time in my busy line up of TBRs to fit in book one which I already own sooner rather than later. I definitely want to revisit this world again soon. I just wish I could also revisit these characters—I didn’t want to let them go.

The cover by Tami Santarossa was not a favorite because it wouldn’t have drawn me to look at the story if I’d seen just that, but the layout and style does fits with the series.

**********

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words welcomes Kim Fielding here today along with the release of her latest novel, Staged, a story in the Belonging Universe.

*********

Hi, I’m Kim Fielding and I’m thrilled to introduce you to Sky Blue, the hero of my newest novel, Staged. In this book, I got the chance to write in an alternate universe very similar to our own–but where slavery is legal.

About Staged

Once the second-prize winner on My Slave’s Got Talent, Sky Blue has spent the past few years singing at a failing New York nightclub.

About Kim Fielding

Kim Fielding picked up a pencil when she was three years old and never put it down. She always dreamed of becoming an author, but took a roundabout way of getting there, first spending an inordinate amount of time as a student and ending up with a law degree and a PhD in psychology. She wrote plenty of academic articles and even a few books, but fiction continued to call to her. One day, she finally put that pencil to its intended use again and began to write novels.

Today, Kim is the best-selling, award-winning author of numerous gay romance and fantasy novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning multiple -genres. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in fifteenth-century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, slaves, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.

Kim writes authentic voices and unexpected heroes.

After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there among the cows and almond trees with her husband, her two daughters, and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.

An Ali Review: Wildflowers by Suki Fleet

Rating:  5 out of 5 stars

WildflowersXavi doesn’t believe in love anymore. Love has never changed the outcome of anything. It has only hurt him.

Sam is sick, and he wants one last thing. He wants Xavi to be with him, to stay with him until the end. Xavi drops everything and promises Sam he will be there.

As they travel across the countryside in a stolen sea-green Cadillac, they search for something neither has the courage to admit he’s looking for. But as the days slip away, Xavi isn’t sure he can keep his promise; he isn’t sure about anything. He can’t help Sam do this. He can’t stand by and watch Sam suffer, can’t be content to let Sam give up.

Saving Sam becomes the only thing that makes any sense, the only thing Xavi wants. Loving Sam becomes the most important promise he will ever make. Now he just has to convince Sam that life—and love—are worth fighting for.

I’m not even sure I have the words to express how much I loved this book.  It’s told from Xavi’s point of view as he struggles to come to terms with, not only his relationship with Sam, but the many painful choices he’s made in his life.  The writing is haunting and melancholy throughout most of the story but it drew me in and I couldn’t put the book down once I had started it. whoI highlighted many passages that I thought were especially moving. It’s a short story (only 80 pages) but there is a lot of plot and even more emotion packed in to it.  The characters were richly done and the emotional pain Xavi is going through jumps off the pages at you.  I found myself empathizing so much with him.  Most of the story revolves around Xavi and Sam but there are a host of side characters that add to the plot and  who were also really well done.   It is an angsty story (but you knew that from the blurb) and I’m not going to lie, my eyes filled with tears more than once, but it is well worth every minute of the pain because there is beauty here too.
Cover art by Garrett Leigh. I like the cover and think it fits really well with the plot of the story.
