Once again, I backed into a series, this time starting with book 2 in the Game Changers series by Rachel Reid, called Heated Rivalry.  It’s a hockey player/game oriented series with each story supposedly a standalone, and yes, after starting with book two , I can say that’s true.  But now after reading the first story Game Changer, I can also say that together, now having read Game Changer?  It adds a richness and appreciation to scenes of great importance in Heated Rivalry that I missed my first reading. Yes, I had to go and read book 2 again after finishing this one.  It made so much more sense having this as a foundation for that story and characters.  So again, I wish I had read one and then immediately the second story as their timelines are happening almost simultaneously.

While you don’t have to be a fan of the NHL and hockey or follow the sport, it helps to understand the hockey mentality and the pressures the players are under while playing this sport (and practically any sport these days).  How many of you can count out athletes still playing?  Right….you can use one hand for most sports.  The pressure to remain closeted is enormous and Rachel Reid captures that well in the character of Scott Hunter, hockey star and deep in the closet gay.  Who intends to stay there until he meets Kip in a smoothie bar and has his world and feelings turned upside down.  As does the decidedly out Kip.  Because being closeted effects not only the person hiding but everyone he’s involved with.  How that affects Kip, his life, mentally, emotionally…is very effectively laid out for the reader, Kip, and eventually for Scott in a revelatory scene.

I fell in love with these characters through the development of their relationship which felt very realistic, highs, lows, career concerns and pressures, and personal hurdles and journeys to take.  It made the story finale all the more heartwarming and a true highlight.  For both books!

Now I can’t wait to see who or what is the inspiration for the next installment in the series.  I have loved both couples and novels.  I am dying to see what happens next.  Of course I highly recommend Game Changer and it’s followup Heated Rivalry.    Read them both together for a tremendous heartwarming hockey romance experience!

Cover art by Carina Press.  I wish there was more color and something to help catch the eye.  Simply a gorgeous torso isn’t really enough to help tell the story these days.

And if he puts his mind to it, he can be anything—or anyone—he wants to be. He can be nice too.
At least, he thinks he can until he lays eyes on his next-door neighbor.

Luke Boucher is nice.
And quiet.
And perfect.

It doesn’t take long for Remy to insinuate himself into Luke’s life. A camera here, a break-in there.

But when Remy’s plan to make a good impression goes to hell, he ends up over his head in more ways than one. Then things aren’t quite so nice anymore.

I honestly loved this book so much – I sat most of the time with my mouth open like what did I just read, and most of the time frustrated because I wanted to know more.
Honestly because it’s so mind melting I don’t want to say much about the book other than to read it – Each of the mains was well written, the story wove together so wonderfully!!!!!
Was it dark?  Somewhat – I don’t think it’d be too much for the average MM reader to enjoy – slightly messed up yes but not anything too severe.
I did think the ending should have been different – I had an image in my head of what I wanted to happen and it didn’t – granted, I kind of knew where the book was headed so I should have guessed it’s just sad I didn’t get the ending I wanted !

Honestly a must read, enjoyable and short.. and twisted.

He’s new to them (six weeks) and for all they know he will return them in a minute. My heart broke for all of them.  Jayden at 12 has learned people will betray and hurt you.  Lucy has never had anyone love her and spent her five year lifespan being neglected.  All Geo has ever wanted was to be a dad and he’s giving it is all.

Of course, on the way to camp they run out of gas while Lucy is having a meltdown and luckily are saved by a hot stranger, Travis.  Travis, who turns out to not only be a famous pitcher for major league baseball but is also Travis Mayhew, adopted son of the camp owners.  They are getting along great until a comment from Geo is misinterpreted by Travis and he ices Geo out.  It also causes him to be less than friendly when he finds out Geo and family are at camp. “Geo shrugged.  “For now”.   And that was that . Travis is sort of a jerk but you understand the why.  “Well, I’m sure you hoped to keep them busy this week. And out of your hair.”  Quit judging, Travis.

Camp is awesome.  The parents are so funny, particularly Van and Bridget.  Bridget is out for Travis’ bod and because Travis is deep in the closet no one realizes they don’t have the right equipment.   Until they clear the air, Travis hates that he is attracted to Geo (misunderstanding, remember) and when they do he can’t see where anything will go with Geo since Travis can’t come out.

Jayden finds friends at camp, Lucy makes progress . Once Travis is disabused of what he thought about Geo, they begin a friendship as well.  “I am sorry…I jumped to conclusions.  And…that was bad.”  Luckily, Geo is not the kind of guy who holds a grudge.

I liked the story very much.  There isn’t a ton of angst or high drama.  It is a story of family and how you get to be one.

Cover art shows Travis (I assume, due to the Camp Evermore t-shirt he is wearing) against of background of trees.  Fit well with the story, I thought.

Though the dare started out the book, I didn’t feel these dares took much precedence in this book as I was thinking would happen.  Draven has refused to admit his feelings towards his best friend and how his latest let downs are affecting him.  Julien hasn’t let anyone know about his bisexuality and it’s hurting him to keep it from his best friend but the drama of his family makes it even harder.

I loved that Draven’s proposal ends up being the push Julien needs to be honest with everyone and live his life how he wants to.  From the beginning these two are prefect with each other but watching them work though it was wonderful.

I understood both of their hesitations but when all is said and done their love takes precedence over everything.  I wish Julien would really be able to stand up to his mother more but at least he finally broke through her air of obliviousness enough in the end, though I’m not sure she understands anything but what she wants.  I loved how Draven is willing to help Julien even knowing he may be risking his own heart with nothing in return.  I loved the ending and can’t wait for the next in the series and hope that it’s about Quinn and Xander.

The cover art by Angsty G is nice and will work as a series cover style and gives a visual of Julien.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review :Play Hard (Glasgow Lads #4.5) by Avery Cockburn

If you’ve read Playing with Fire, do not pass go, do not collect $200, go straight to your e-book retailer and purchase this story immediately! It’s a fantastic continuation of the love story between Robert and Liam which started in that book. But it’s also so much more. Filled with humor, love, friendship, romance, and sexy times, reading this story is like looking through a one-way mirror into the heart of Glasgow, Scotland, and coming away with a picture of everyday life.

As the blurb states: “Play Hard is the feel-good, staying-in-love story the world needs right now!” So very true! Liam and Robert were friends from the time Liam got into trouble with a teacher in grade school and Rabbie decided Liam was the kind of kid he wanted to hang with. Fifteen years later, they are still besties but, now, also deeply in love.

Liam still hasn’t decided what he wants to do career-wise while Robert is deeply enmeshed in his startup tech company developing an app to improve the health of Glaswegians who die at an earlier age than others in their country. Liam has the potential to be a massage therapist but is concerned it will be boring and not half as demanding and fun as his role as a bartender. We learn the real reason for his hesitance later in the story when he shares his fears with his lover.

Robert is a workaholic. He knew it before he took the online test to confirm it and their relationship is feeling the effects of their different shifts and Robert’s work ethic. To help them overcome the strain, Robert invents a game that takes them to new heights of pleasure in each other’s company. No, not a sex game. It’s more of a push-our-boundaries-in-new-ways game, and it’s not only enjoyable for them, it’s also delightful for readers as we get to know the characters much more in-depth than in the original story. In short, this book endeared these characters to me, and I won’t likely forget them for quite some time. The author’s wonderful sense of humor is woven throughout the story, as is their appreciation for their homeland.

As I said before, if you’ve read any of these books, don’t miss this one. And if you haven’t, read this anyway. It can stand alone and it can spark your interest in reading the series. I not only want to meet these men and watch a game of footy with them, I purely want to revisit this beautiful city in my grandda’s homeland.

The cover by Damonza features two young men, smiling adoringly at each other, obviously in love. Having read their original story in which their body types were described as big and bulky, I would not recognize them as the young men on this cover.

From Chapter 4:

Robert didn’t join Liam in the shower, partly because it was too small to fit a pair of men their size, but mostly because he wanted to watch.

Built into the corner of the bathroom, the shower’s glass walls were fully transparent, not smoky or marbled or made otherwise translucent for privacy’s sake. So there was nothing to obscure the sight of Liam’s naked body.

Fully dressed and standing in the opposite corner, Robert simply observed. If Liam had been craving his undivided attention, he was about to get it in spades.

They’d showered together many times, but he’d never noticed how Liam wet the bar of soap by lifting it into the water spray much farther than necessary—at nearly throat height—and turning his face aside to avoid the resulting splash. Did he think the soap got wetter faster by putting it closer to the shower nozzle? Perhaps it was a habit borne of the poor water pressure in his childhood flat. Robert remembered it well, as he’d lived with the Carrolls for ten months when he was sixteen, between the time of his father’s death and the start of university.

“You’re staring.” Liam’s voice echoed against the green tile walls. He met Robert’s eyes as he soaped his broad, well-muscled, and thoroughly freckled chest, then swept his fingers up beneath his rib cage to emphasize his abs.

“I know.”

“I like when you stare.”

“I know.” Robert licked his lips as Liam used one sudsy hand to stroke his cock and the other to reach back between his cheeks. Soon he would taste Liam everywhere, tracing his tongue over each angle and curve as if for the first time. He would erase the doubt from this man’s mind and replace it with the certainty of endless adoration.

Just as steam began to obscure the shower walls, turning the spectacle from hardcore porn to softcore, Liam switched off the water and pushed the doors aside on their track. “Towel?”

Robert stepped forward with it, stopping just out of Liam’s reach. “Come here and I’ll dry you.”

“Oh, special.”

Robert started with his head, scrubbing the red hair that had turned nearly black in its wetness, then worked his way down—quickly, because Liam was shivering.

He finished with Liam’s feet, then folded the towel and set it on the floor.

“What are you—ah,” Liam said as Robert knelt upon the damp towel. His next utterance was a gasp, in response to Robert nuzzling his balls. “Okay, this is seriously hot with me naked and you completely dressed.”

Robert drew his nose against the right side of Liam’s sack. “You smell good. I wonder how you’ll taste.”

Liam gripped the sink to his right. “Gonnae find out?”

“Aye,” Robert said with a heavy breath against this most sensitive skin. Liam’s cock jerked, begging for equal time.

Robert licked a line up the center of Liam’s sack, then flicked his tongue back and forth between his balls, as though deciding which to try first. He chose the left one, wrapping his lips carefully around the warm mass that seemed to half-melt in his mouth, suspended in a state between solid and liquid.

He lifted his chin to watch Liam, whose lips and cheeks were flushing pink, just as they’d done when he’d come in from the cold at the Tesco. Liam’s chest began to heave with his quickening breath, ribs expanding and contracting the solid planes of his torso, the planes that always made Robert’s palms warm and tingly.He reached up now with his right hand, his left steadying Liam’s trembling thigh. He slid two of his fingers round one of Liam’s scarlet nipples and squeezed.

“Och.” Liam leaned back, bracing himself against the wall. “God, look how hard you’re making me.” He touched his other nipple, mimicking Robert’s tweaking fingertips. “I could almost come like this.”

Robert shook his head slowly, maneuvering his tongue over the contents of his mouth.

“Aye, I could,” Liam replied. “Unless you do something different.”

Robert pulled away enough to say, “Turn around.”
